The Best Kind of Homecoming!

E

arlier this summer, I had the good fortune to cover a district Holstein show in central Wisconsin. In fact, the district was my ‘home’ district, the one I had grown up showing at myself, and the show took place at the Clark County Fairgrounds, which was my home county and county fair. Now, I haven’t lived in Clark County for 25 years, but it’s remarkable how driving past the dairy barn and turning in the driveway to the fairgrounds still felt awfully familiar.

was on the planning committee more than 45 years ago to build the ‘new’ dairy barn. The old barns were run down and didn’t provide adequate space for the large dairy show. The members of that committee traveled the upper Midwest to get ideas for the best design possible. By the early 1980s, they had planned, fundraised, and constructed a beautiful new building that housed 300 head of cattle, had a shiny new milking parlor, an attached show ring, and a multi-purpose space.

Plenty of things have changed on the grounds since I first pulled on white pants and escorted my first heifers around the ring. The district show was held in a beautiful new livestock barn just recently built after a vigorous fundraising campaign. That building replaced several little buildings that had been constructed over the years and is a great improvement to the ‘flow’ of the fair, in my opinion. The dairy cattle at the fair will still be housed and shown in the dairy barn - which used to be known as the ‘new barn’. I laughed at myself as I realized with a shock that the ‘new barn’ where I started my show career was now over 40 years old - how can that be?

Clark County is home to a large number of dairy cows, and a large number of dairy exhibitors. Like most of you, I have memories of those summer days spent at the fair that will last my whole life exhibiting cattle, sitting on show boxes, strolling down the midway to watch my friends lose money at the carnival games, corn dogs and funnel cakes, that unique funky smell that all your clothes have after five days in the dorm, endless wheelbarrow trips to the muck heap.

But as I thought about it, the flow of history and the efforts of the people in Clark County continuing to invest in the fairgrounds was truly gratifying. My dad

I haven’t kept track of the ribbons or trophies won at that fair, and the main souvenirs are some faded photographs in old albums, but what I still have are the friendships made on those long, hot August afternoons. What is it about 4-H friendships that stand the test of time? It can be several years in between seeing some of those friends, yet when we find ourselves gathered at a show or sale, we’re immediately joking and laughing like we’re still teenagers. Trust me when I say that old inside jokes or one-liners are still funny 40

years later! Maybe no one knows you as well as the people you shivered with on the wash racks in the morning or picked up their cards on the show box across from you in those never-ending rounds of Dirty Clubs. As I was in the ring taking pictures at the District show, I had the chance to read the names of the banners hanging in the ‘new’ barn thanking the companies and people that had contributed funds to its construction. It made me smile to see so many names of those 4-H friends or their families proudly printed on those banners - the next generation doing their part to ensure the same great experiences and memories for their kids. I was delighted that my mom and dad came to the show as well. My dad, who will be 92 this fall, doesn’t get to as many events as he used to, but still enjoys the occasional show. While several of his peer group on that planning committee have passed away, there were still plenty of people that came by to say hello and have a visit. It emphasized the generational connection in a rural community that can be hard to find elsewhere. So here’s to county fairs and the timeless image of tired kids in dirty whites that are still smiling at the end of the day. If someone hits you up for a donation for a new fair barn, dig deep in those pockets for five or ten or a hundred bucks. You’re contributing to far more than a bricks and mortar building; you’re weaving the next strand in our fabric of agriculture that billows into the future. Priceless. Enjoy the Fair Season - see you at ringside!!

BELFAST GOLDWYN LASENZA EX-95-3E-CAN 14*

I

f you saw her walk into the ring at Madison or the Royal in 2013, you knew you were looking at the sure winner Belfast Goldwyn Lasenza may be one of the most admired Junior 2-Year-Olds to ever circle the ring at the ‘big shows’. She stood at the head of the line at both shows on her way to All-American and All-Canadian Junior 2-Year-Old honors an impressive show season for the Juneborn heifer. Once you looked at her pedigree, she was even easier to root for - a Goldwyn daughter of Lylehaven Durham Lekysha EX-92, then EX-91 Lylehaven Leah (by Cousteau), and finally the cow that recast Lylehaven as a breeder herd - Thiersant Lili Starbuck EX-94 5E. This is a massive family tree with successful branches everywhere including Lylehaven Lila Z EX-94 25*; Calbrett Goldwyn Layla EX-96 2E 21*; and Comestar Goldwyn Lilac VG89 44* to mention just a few. Now, ten years after Lasenza first stepped into the show ring as a summer yearling in 2012, we can credit her with many

[Lasenza descendants] can sustain matings to higher production bulls. They have the width and strength to handle more production along with their consistent quality, durability, and longevity. JULIEN CHABOT mid-1990s, he was the person who took Sue Brown, the Lylehaven herd manager, to see a rangy, black 2-year-old that the world would come to know as Thiersant Lili Starbuck EX-94 5E and the foundation brood cow for the whole ‘L’ family at Lylehaven. “I called my brother Robert and told him about this Starbuck 2-year-old, but the $25,000 price tag was just too steep,” remembers Julien. “We had been in on Lila Z before she sold to Albert Cormier and Dave Eastman, so we knew what Durham could do in that family. When we were at the Big E in 2008, everyone kept talking about this great October Durham calf in the Lylehaven string. I looked at her a couple of times, and when I woke up in the morning I was still thinking about her, so I wrote a check to Lylehaven for $20,000 and when I called my brother, he wanted in on half - and that’s how got Lylehaven Durham Lekysya. Goldwyn was the rising big-type sire at the time and we needed something to mate to him - I thought a Durham out of the Lili family was perfect. She went on to be third in the fall calf class at Madison that year, so we were really pleased with the deal.”

Lekysya, who eventually scored EX92 with 5*, was not a massive embryo producer, but did make four Goldwyn daughters, of which Lasenza was the first. Alex promptly claimed her as her 4-H heifer for 2012, and after a successful season, Lasenza was All-Canadian 4-H Summer Yearling and Reserve All-Canadian Summer Yearling in the open contest. Like her dam, Lovestruck went on to All-Canadian 4-H honors and was also the All-Canadian Intermediate Calf. Lovestruck Lasenza was Alex Chabot’s 4-H project when she was a summer yearling and and her full sister, Doorman Lust, earned the. All-Canadian 4-H Summer Yearling title in 2012. After working with the family for several generations, Julien appreciates the qualities that helps define them. “They can sustain matings to higher production bulls. They have the width and strength to handle more production along with their consistent quality, durability, and longevity,” he states. With Lasenza and her many daughters humming along in herds across Canada, there’ll be more chapters of her story to write, and doubtless many more brood cow stars to be awarded! SILVEIRA DAIRY

Encouraging the Next Generation L

ocated in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley of California, Silveira Dairy of Chowchilla celebrated their 30th year of dairying in November 2021. Originally from Hanford, Johnny Silveira began farming with his father Jose while finishing his senior year of high school. After marrying Terianne, who grew up on her family’s dairy in Tulare, they moved the dairy 70 miles north in 2003. “We wanted to grow the herd and farming operation and had an opportunity up north,” commented Terianne. “We have mild winters and warm summers that are ideal conditions for cattle and in the summer, we get an evening breeze that helps with cooler temps than further south.” Chowchilla is just 30 miles north of Fresno, which is considered the heart of the 100 Mile Circle, the most vital and productive growing region in the world. Although this 100 Mile Circle covers less than 1% of the total land mass of the U.S., it produces nearly one-half of its fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts – more than 250 different crops rich in the vitamins and nutrients essential to human survival. This area also produces more milk than the entire state of Wisconsin.

Today, the herd consists of 1500 Holsteins and 400 acres of almonds, along with corn and wheat for silage. The entire herd was originally grade, but when Johnny and Terianne’s children, Logan and Lauren, began showing, they joined the Holstein Association USA in 2017 and started registering a handful of show cattle. Meanwhile, they had already been genomically testing Logan, Terrianne, Johnny and Lauren Silveira. the herd and once they began seeing favorable results, they Proven cow families that work and increased the number of cows they the history on these animals is key to registered. Today, nearly 1/3 of the herd breeding a better dairy cow and their is registered, including 200 head that future progeny,” added Terianne. They are just under 100 lbs. of fat Johnny. “It’s interesting to see animals corrected milk. One of their main goals is that tested high as a calf and watch their to improve their herd average every year growth and performance just as the tests and build an overall better herd. The Silveira family has earned this recognition since 2019.

“Raising registered purebred Holstein cattle adds a premium to their value. You have the lineage and history of that animal that allows you to mate her correctly.

In the grand scheme, the Silveiras do not focus on specific cow families, rather, they look for genetic traits overall that will work with their breeding program for that specific mating. By evaluating all their cow families, they can pull from the best. “We feel this approach has helped improve our herd both genomically and in the show string.”

The type of cows we focus on breeding have favorable genetic traits such as GTPI, milk, components and DPR. We feel that focusing on these traits helps us build a better herd.” JOHNNY SILVEIRA Because they are looking at improving upon each generation, the Silveiras have utilized IVF technology for the last two years. They implant 150 embryos per month in cows and heifers, mating the top bulls to their high genomic females. Logan serves as vital role in helping determine matings and assists with the overall IVF process. “The type of cows we focus on breeding have favorable genetic traits such as GTPI, milk, components and DPR,” commented Johnny. “We feel that focusing on these traits helps us build a better herd.” With their extensive IVF program and central location to many other dairies, the Silveiras recently opened a Boviteq IVF Certified Collection facility at their heifer ranch. Both Logan and Lauren have also shown an extreme interest in the IVF process, which makes having their own collection facility that much more beneficial. Eventually, the goal is to solely breed their cows through implantation using IVF technology, which will help them maximize the genetic potential, creating a more efficient herd with maximum milk production. While the new IVF lab has certainly gained Logan and Lauren’s attention, they have both been actively involved in the dairy prior to this. “What keeps us optimistic about the future of our dairy is seeing our young kids want to be involved,” remarked Terianne. “They both have been interested in learning

about all aspects of the dairy and we’ve included them from an early age.” When virtual learning occurred in 2020, Logan and Lauren had more opportunities to work on the farm and gain more experience. Logan has become a main part of the breeding program and mating selections, and both kids assist with herd health checks weekly. After Logan finishes high school in 2023, he plans on attending college and then return to the dairy. While Lauren is just starting high school, she also plans on returning home after college and be involved in their IVF program. She is interning with Boviteq this summer to learn more about the IVF process. Off the farm, Logan and Lauren are involved in school and community events, with most of their activities focused on agriculture and showing. Logan was named the Breeder of the Future by the California Holstein Association in 2019 and was 2nd High FFA Individual at the Western Classic Dairy Judging contest the following year. In 2021, Logan and his team from Chowchilla FFA won the State FFA Dairy Judging Contest (as a sophomore) and his team placed 7th at the national contest. Lauren has been very active in 4-H as well as the California Junior Holstein Association since 2017. She has competed in Dairy Jeopardy and Dairy Bowl at the State Junior Convention

and was on the winning Junior Dairy Bowl team at the National Convention this summer (her first year attending!). She was also named the California Breeder of the Future in 2022 and plans on continuing her involvement in 4-H, Junior Holstein and FFA as she enters high school this fall. With less than 5 years of showing Registered Holsteins under their belt, Logan and Lauren already have an impressive list of accomplishments between them. Both kids exhibited replacement heifers from the dairy at their local shows to begin with, and eventually they began purchasing a few Registered Holsteins to add to their show string. In 2020, Logan exhibited Ms-AOL Aristocrat Rista-Red, a summer yearling from the Miss Roxys Recovery-Red (EX-92) family, who was 2nd Open and 1st Junior at the Western National Holstein Show. In 2021, she scored VG-87 VG-MS and was the winning Summer Junior 2-YearOld at the Western Dairy Showcase. So far in 2022, her daughter, Silver-Elite Warr Roxy-Red, has been named the AllCalifornia Red & White Summer Yearling, Reserve All-California Summer Yearling and Reserve Junior All-California Summer Yearling. Her other daughter, Silver-Elite Wr Rose-Red-ET, was the 2022 Reserve All-California Red & White Winter Calf and was 1st at the Western Spring National Red & White Junior Show.

Logan also exhibited the 2021 Junior All-California Summer Yearling, Heritage Redmylips-ET, who he purchased at the Heritage Dream Sale. She was also 2nd at the Western National Spring Holstein Show and ended the year placing 7th at the International Junior Holstein Show. This was the first time the Silveiras made the 2000-mile trip to World Dairy Expo. She is an Avalanche from an EX-91 Absolute from the Acme Star Lily family and is +3.14T with a promising future ahead of her. During that same trip to World Dairy Expo in 2021, Lauren also had the opportunity

to exhibit on the colored shavings. Silver-Elite Aristocrat Mia *RC placed 4th in a very deep class and earned the Silveira family their first Junior AllAmerican Nomination. Mia returned to the showring this year and was named Reserve All-California and Reserve Junior All-California Spring Yearling and placed 2nd at the inaugural Western National Junior Holstein Show and was named Best Bred & Owned in her class. Like many families in the dairy industry, the Silveiras are forging their own path and paving the way for their children to be involved for years to come. They

have found the balance between their larger herd, focusing on milk production and efficiency, while also working with a select group of show animals that are creating the next generation of show prospects for the kids. Johnny and Terianne are Logan and Lauren’s biggest fans, while also instilling their work ethic and values in them that is evident in all projects they take on! With a strong family dynamic and true passion for the Registered Holstein, it’s a safe bet we haven’t heard the last of the Silveira family and Silver-Elite Holsteins. By Julie Ashton

Silver-Elite Aristocrat Mia *RC secured the first ever Junior All-American Nomination for the Silveira family. Lauren has continued her success with Mia in 2022, being named Reserve AllCalifornia Spring Yearling and Reserve Junior Champion at the Western Classic.

A Balancing Act

airy judging coach, professor, mom, wife, business owner, and farmer are just a few of the words used to describe this multi-talented individual. Carrie Edsall, the dairy judging coach at SUNY Cobleskill, grew up on a generational dairy farm. In her youth, she could be seen as the little girl pulling around the calves she wished she could show, until she was 13 when she enrolled in 4-H. Edsall enjoyed showing her family’s registered Holsteins and Brown Swiss at her local shows and fairs. She gives credit to her interest in 4-H Dairy Judging that allowed her to go to so many places and helped her build confidence within herself and her opinions. Carrie Edsall resides in Cobleskill, New York where she owns and operates Black Willow Pond Farm, a diversified livestock farm that focuses on pasture-raised meats. Edsall is employed at SUNY Cobleskill as an Animal Science professor and has been coaching the Dairy Cattle Judging Team and advising the Dairy Cattle Club since 2015. She runs the farm with her husband, Dan, and her two sons, Luke and Jacob. Both of her sons participate in 4-H in a wide variety of projects. The main focus is dairy, but show pigs and show rabbits also make guest appearances! Luke has an intense interest in tractors, equipment, and welding. Jacob, whilst twisting Edsall’s arm, has acquired a few Guernseys to show. When it became time to choose what she would do after high school, it was with no shadow of a doubt that Edsall

40 « COWSMOPOLITAN Summer 2022

would choose to pursue a degree in Animal Science. She attended both SUNY Morrisville and Cornell University, which gave her a well-rounded exposure to the dairy industry in various different ways. “The connections I made in college continue to be so beneficial to this day. My lifelong friends came from my college days,” Edsall said, which many people in the industry can relate so closely to. Edsall made the judging teams at both colleges, which gave her the opportunity to travel, meet breeders, and compete in national contests. Staying involved and encouraging the youth of the industry is something Edsall is passionate about and she continues to find ways to do just that. After her years at college, she was presented with a position as herd manager and then fell into Cooperative Extension. Edsall worked in Extension for both Cornell and North Carolina State. Within those years, she worked closely with farmers and niche marketing - farmers that were “thinking outside the box.”

In 2009, Edsall moved back to her home state of New York to “practice what she preached.” Her farm has concentrations in pasture-raised meats such as poultry, pork, meat rabbits, grass-fed lamb and laying hens. And in recent years, she has been working with her family’s dairy to raise beef, veal, and marketing of their dairy products including milk, cheese curds, and yogurt. Roughly 90% of the products marketed are sold as retail. Edsall attends weekly, year-round farmers markets in addition to shipping meats from their website (blackwillowpondfarm.com), and what they sell out of their farm store front. The wholesale products are marketed towards many local stores as well as local restaurants featuring specialty items. They are best known for their pastured chicken and Berkshire pork as well as their escalating flock of Katahdin hair sheep. The rabbit has always been unique and they hold a special spot for Edsall as she has been raising them since she was eight. The store has come a long way, starting out like many great companies in their former

Carrie Edsall with her husband Dan, and sons Luke and Jacob. garage. At first the store was used as a place to organize products for customer orders and to prepare for markets, but their small business has grown and is still growing! During the onset of Covid-19, Edsall and her family found it very important to help the farm store flourish. Their online sales of products grew immensely in a short period of time. Every business has its challenges, and with off-farm jobs, kids sports schedules, and the daily demands and unknowns of the farm, it became a balancing act. One of the biggest learning curves Edsall has hit along the way with the farm store is shipping products. She found that shipping the meats was a “gamechanger,” but rapidly became unpredictable and time consuming. A challenge people across the dairy industry seem to be quickly realizing is the bottling and sales of fluid milk. The harsh reality of how little money can be made from fluid milk sales is hard for any passionate dairy farmer to swallow, but Edsall believed it was important to support an industry that supported her. She wanted to get their fresh, local milk into consumers’ hands all while giving a friendly face behind the bottle. Fortunately, since the farm already had a large following with their meats, it made sense for customers to buy dairy products as well.

Circling back to Edsall’s role in the classroom, she has taught a variety of hands-on classes while at SUNY Cobleskill. To Edsall, hands-on learning is one of the most fundamental ways to learn something, and she has had the ability to teach a variety of them! Her handson approach is believed to be an asset to the college and her students will synonymously agree. Edsall’s students, while recognizing that she is always on the go and has a full plate, greatly appreciate her farm background. As well as understanding that she is running a day to day operation and business. “And in first place, SUNY Cobleskill,” was heard many times in past years at judging contests all over. The dairy judging team, coached by Edsall since July of 2015, has had quite the success story. Edsall was called into the Dean’s office, following the retirement of Dr. John Tryon, and was handed that year’s judging team. Uncertainty of what she got herself into quickly arose, but “things just seemed to click,” Edsall said. As a youth, Edsall hated reasons, as most do. She said she was terrified to give them and she didn’t want her students to feel that way. Edsall found herself finding ways to

train the students to have an eye for cattle and being able to sort them, not to just pick the best one. Encouragement along the way and building a strong foundation proved to be an important factor of Edsall’s coaching methods. What Edsall enjoys the most is working with a student who has never judged before, molding them, and watching their success blossom in the contest season. Each judging contest is so widely different it’s hard to predict the animals you will see. With that unknown, Edsall works on finding the students’ voice, focusing on terminology that works for them and building their confidence. “I do my best to solidify them with self confidence and preparation to their best,” says Edsall. Any of Edsall’s teams will say how competitive she is, and that the mentality carries on through each of them. These coaching methods have proved successful, as Edsall has set a record and coached three consecutive team wins at World Dairy Expo in the Post-Secondary contest. The most rewarding part of coaching for Edsall was the students who never officially judged, but wanted to and being able to help them win contests or place in the top five at multiple. Her students are what makes coaching worthwhile.

Carrie Edsall, top right, has successfully coached the SUNY Cobleskill Dairy Judging team to many wins since 2015. With 2022 moving along quickly, Edsall is looking forward to getting back to “normal” on the campus of Cobleskill. The SUNY Cobleskill Dairy Fashions Sale was held on April 30th after a two-year pandemic hiatus. And of course, Edsall is awaiting another successful dairy judging season! With Edsall’s passion for the youth in the industry, and seeing them succeed, her advice is to grab every opportunity available to you; learn and gain experience as much as life allows you to; be kind and respectful to everyone you meet; and to make a great first impression. ESKDALE DAIRY

R

A Dairy Oasis in Western Utah

ivers of Milk in the Desert’ - it’s the tagline for EskDale Dairy and one of the truest brand mottos you’ll ever come across. Located in western Utah, only a few miles from the Nevada border, it’s pretty unlikely that you’ll find yourself just driving past EskDale on your travels. But, if you love deep-pedigreed, goodlooking, purebred Holsteins, it’s worth the effort to plan a trip. Managed by Dr. John Conrad and his son, Ben, the wellmanaged herd has genetics sourced from across North America as well as a number of prolific homebred cow families. The remote, but beautiful, location is home to the House of Aaron, a Christian non-denominational group, that established a communal settlement in Eskdale in 1955. While the EskDale prefix is now on cattle that have been exported around the world, the initial dairy herd on the property consisted of about ten crossbred dairy cows that John Conrad helped milk by hand. His father, Dr. Robert Conrad, was a leader in the church and re-located his family to the community. While his father never developed a great passion for cattle, John did and set his sights on getting his undergraduate degree from Utah State University, and then graduated from veterinary school at the University of California-Davis.

While at university, the herd changed its commercial scope to milking about 40 grade Holstein in a new parlor. Over the years, John’s interest in dairy genetics kept pace with the expansion of the milking herd, which now numbers about 350 cows and a similar number of young stock. The cows are housed in large dirt/compost paddocks with opensided shelters for shelter from the sun and adverse weather. “The open pens are wonderful for cows until you get bad weather. For about 11 months of the year in the desert, these cows can walk around and it’s comfortable. In late December and January, we can get down to 10 below zero and then it’s miserable for man and beast. We try not to have anything calving in that six weeks or so, just to get past the worst of the weather,” notes John. “We typically have a bit of a breeze, so that makes it nice. The desert climate always cools down at night, and that seems to be the key for getting the cows through the heat of the summer.” With irrigation from the local water source and regular soil amendment, the community has turned a good bit of desert dirt into productive acreage for growing alfalfa and forage for the herd. “The water is good here. We have about

We mainly rely on the snowmelt from the nearby mountains, but we also do need some rain each year,” comments John. “The aquifers are drawing down a bit and our water supply is always of interest to areas with more population.” The dairy makes a significant contribution to the financial well-being of the community, so the herd needs to sustain a certain level of production. “We want the cows to make us money in the barn - the herd average is a little over 27,000M and 1,100F with a 4.0%F and 3.3%P. We breed and feed for components as we ship our milk 300 miles away - up to Gossner Foods in Logan, UT. It costs a

We’re not afraid to use a genomic or high-production bull on our show cows or a high-type bull on some of our higher index cows. We strive to breed good-looking cows that milk more as they mature. We do use aAa analysis. It helps ensure that we keep some balance in the herd.” JOHN CONRAD lot of money to ship water, so we make sure we send a product that will pay us well. We haul our semi-tank tube to Delta (about ninety miles away), where there are a lot of bigger dairies, and they pick it up there and leave us a clean one.” Both John and Ben admit that they really love the genetics part of the business, not just milking cows. They’ve been involved with a syndicate that buys a number of embryos every year from higher genomic level animals and try to hit that ‘home run’, so they do pay attention to the genomic segment. As breeders of their own cattle, they pay lots of attention to type. “Around here, we would not to go below +2.00 on type when breeding the genomic heifers and really, when it comes to breeding the

herd, we like to be up around +3.00 on type,” admits John. Though it can be a struggle with the time, manpower and distance, the Conrads do like to exhibit at the Western Spring National Show in Richmond, Utah (about a six-hour trip from the farm) and to the Utah State Fair every September. It’s often through the show at Richmond that EskDale cattle get marketed out to other areas of the country. In 2007, the herd saw two homebred cows garner AllAmerican titles: EskDale Dundee Marcia Mona was named All-American Junior 2-Year-Old, while EskDale Stormatic Legend was selected as the All-American 4-Year-Old. Legend went on to be scored EX-95 2E, and Mona (who was sold to Arethusa Farm at World Dairy Expo) re-sold in the 2008 Global Glamour Sale for $152,000. Two All-Americans in one year is an amazing accomplishment for any establishment, and those two cows anchored the Reserve All-American Senior Best Three group for the farm that same year.

Legend, by Stormatic, was out of Ever-Green-View Legacy EX-90, a Convincer daughter of EverEskDale Dundee Marcia Mona (EX-92) was sold at the 2007 World Dairy Expo Green-View Le Grant, an EX cow to Arethusa Farm, who later sold her in the 2008 Global Glamour Sale. She was with a record over 50,000 lbs. of milk - she reflects the Conrad’s named the 2009 Star of the Breed by Holstein Association USA.

willingness to look for genetics outside their herd. Mona EX-92, on the other hand, was a 5th generation homebred cow who eventually went on to be named the Holstein USA 2009 Star of the Breed for her owners, Siemers Holsteins. “We’re not afraid to use a genomic or high-production bull on our show cows or a high-type bull on some of our higher index cows,” explains John. “We strive to breed good-looking cows that milk more as they mature. We do use aAa analysis. It helps ensure that we keep some balance in the herd. So many of the high-type bulls are 243 or some variation - we look for some bulls that are 156, 516 for balance. Both Mona and Legend - our AllAmericans in 2007 - were bred that way.” A more recent EskDale breeding success story is Ms Crushabull Carolina-ET VG87, the Reserve All-American Senior 2-Year-Old in 2021 who was born at the farm in February 2019. Backed by a milelong Roxy pedigree and by the new high-type sire, Crushabull, the heifer calf exemplified that balanced breeding they strive for. Golden Oaks bought her later that summer, and her genomic test was a home run with her landing over +4.00T and +3.23UDC. That fancy udder landed her in the second spot in the Senior 2-Year-Old class at Madison and on to her Reserve All-American title. COWSMOPOLITAN Summer 2022 » 47

We just don’t have the help or expertise to develop cattle to compete at the very highest level, so it’s best for us to get them into the hands of people that can get them ready for the biggest shows if they have the potential.” JOHN CONRAD They sold a couple more from their Richmond show string this year: EskDale Moovin ClingET sold to T & L Cattle Ltd. and Ben Conrad, center, with EskDale’s winning Junior Best Three Females group at placed 2nd in the winter yearling the 2022 Western Spring National Holstein Show. All three heifers were bred by class, while Siemers Main Molly EskDale, but were sold to other breeders during or after the show. 33580-ET, the winner of the Summer Junior 2-Year-Old While they keep an eye on the genomic class, sold after the show to Dymentholm lists, they’re not married to always using Genetics and Duckett Holsteins. It’s hard the highest bulls. “A GTPI over 3000 to sell the good ones, but John recognizes doesn’t tell you much, but it does tell the limitations of what they can do at you that there are probably two or three the farm. “We just don’t have the help or generations of unproven genetics in expertise to develop cattle to compete at the pedigree. We still value the accuracy the very highest level, so it’s best for us to of the numbers on proven sires. They have horrible genomics for milk, but they milk their heads off. Plus they are very fertile they breed and flush tremendously well and live to be six or seven years old. The dam of the winning summer yearling at Richmond this year, Borderview Summerfest Ruth-ET, was born here, changed hands a couple of times before Tim Abbott bought her back. We like to have offspring out of cow families that are well-known. Our cows get around because we’ll sell them!” 48 « COWSMOPOLITAN Summer 2022

They always have their eye out for individuals from other cow families they admire that they can add to the herd as

well. They enjoy having Red & White cattle in the herd and have bred, developed and owned some good ones. In the COVID year of 2020, the Western National Show was held in September instead of May, and they brought a beautiful-uddered Destry senior 3-year-old daughter to the show. It wasn’t long before they’d sold StJacob Destry Lava-Red to Grai-Rose Cattle and Arizona Dairy and Lava waltzed to the Grand Champion R&W title in Richmond on her way to an All-American R&W nomination. Now, solely owned by Arizona Dairy, Lava was Grand Champion of the California Spring Red & White Show as a 5-year-old earlier this spring. A walk through the herd gives a visitor the chance to identify more up-and-coming stars, as every paddock reveals balanced cows with open rib, scope, and really good udders. The cattle have the calm, curious demeanor of animals that are treated well. John and Ben can identify them all during a tour and it’s a delight for anyone who enjoys talking pedigrees and sires. The conversation is dotted with references to cows like Lila Z, Chief Adeen, Hezbollah, Alicia, Wichita, Roxy, and many more. Time will tell what the future holds for this small green oasis in the middle of the Snake Valley desert. Water is always a key factor, and population in the community is aging, but one thing seems clear and that’s the continuing interest and influence of the EskDale herd in the West! The Value of the All-American Nomination

I

n 1976 I had the privilege to have all access to one of the most brilliant marketers in the purebred livestock business, David Bachman Sr. The owner and overseer of Pinehurst Farms in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the man carefully cultivated a program to enhance the value of his Holsteins, especially to a Japanese clientele. The culmination of a show circuit that would last over five months and encompass ten shows and over ten thousand miles was the announcement of the All-American nominations. From 1975 to 1981, Pinehurst was the leading exhibitor and breeder of All-American nominations. Through its existence, the farm would garner more than 200 AllAmerican nominations and more than 50 All-American and Reserve All-American awards. Pinehurst’s first All-American, Pinehurst Peerless, was exported to Japan in 1968 for $15,000 ($126,879.82 in 2022 dollars).

The nominations were a huge marketing tool as potential customers in Japan anxiously waited for their copy of the Holstein World to arrive in their mail box or perhaps view one that had made the trip overseas in the briefcase of a sales agent or breeder. Bachmann, who would travel to Japan twice a year with a couple copies and the skill of an artist, would highlight those pages with Pinehurst animals listed to potential buyers. In 1976 the value of a young sire like Pinehurst Copyright would increase with the showings of his offspring. Each was photographed perhaps a couple of times. A professional photographer made several trips to the farm during

64 « COWSMOPOLITAN Summer 2022

the year but the coveted pictures with the willows as a backdrop in Madison were generally the pictures sent to the Holstein World office for consideration. There were no composite pictures. Groups like the Copyright Junior Get of Sire were posed by as many as eight or more people. Getting all four animals’ attention at the same time could be a daunting experience. Largely because of those All-American nominations and the exposure, Pinehurst Debonair was Unanimous All-American Bull Calf in 1976. Pinehurst Copyright, Pinehurst Blueprint, and Pinehurst Titleist were so what you see is what you get, a big, all exported to Japan and it would be fair straight, long calf with style to burn and to say that the revenue from those sales an incredible wide, deep, long and open financed Pinehurst for good deal of time rib. Debonair was a son of the homebred afterwards. Pinehurst Copyright from Thorncreek Deppings Royalty Sunset, undefeated and All-American in her own right, was also exported after the completion of the year to Italy which added more money to the Pinehurst coffers as well. It would be almost impossible to calculate the value of being one of six animals or one of six groups on that nomination page would be but it is fair to say that the master of promotion found that it certainly added value to these animal and the herd in general. The nominations that year (with thoughts on a few): Pinehurst Debonair Unanimous All-American Bull Calf Pinehurst Debonair was as close to perfection as you could ever get. When one analyzes his picture, you must remember there was no ‘Photoshopping’

Majesty Sally EX-93. The undefeated Debonair anchored the undefeated Junior Get as well. Sir Prestige Reflection Elgin EX-93 Unanimous All-American 2-Year-Old Bull Pinehurst Sovereign Echo Senior Yearling Bull Exported to Japan Pinehurst Titlest HM All-American Junior Yearling Bull Exported to Japan

Deppings Royalty Sunset All-American Senior Yearling Heifer Exported to Italy Sunset was owned in partnership with the Depping family, also of Sheboygan County. Sunset was undefeated and probably holds the record for the number of times being clipped during a show season. She was David Brown’s pride and joy and hour upon hour was spent by ‘Brownie’ working her beautiful white hair. Sold before the Royal to Italy, ‘Sunset’ financed a good part of the 1976 show expenses. Pinehurst Fortune All-American Junior Yearling Heifer Eventually scored VG-88 and owned by Dreamstreet Farm, NY Pinehurst Dorrine HM All-American Heifer Calf Eventually scored EX-90 and owned by Dreamstreet Farm, NY Pippings Capsule Pride Nominated All-American Heifer Calf Went on to be VG-85 and owned by James Winters, CO. C Carlspride Vogel Reflection EX-97 Reserve All-American Aged Bull A massive black bull that weighed close to 3000 pounds, his years-long show ring rivalry with Zeldenrust Fond Memory has those two linked together in any Holstein history conversation. Carlspride was loaded with style and won the Grand Champion Bull title at World Dairy Expo in 1976 Browndale Highcroft Fury EX-CAN HM All-American Aged Bull

No-Na-Me Fond Matt HM All-American Get Of Sire Pinehurst Winsome Echo EX-95 Nominated All-American Aged Cow The Premier Breeder banner was most coveted by Pinehurst and Winsome added many points during the year. The epitome of balance and style and always a lady, she stood on the end of the cow line at the shows and made a picture perfect greeting for visitors to the string. Ecraso Fond Matt Linda EX-94 Nominated All-American 3-Year Old Cow Bred in Ohio, Linda was tall, dairy, though a bit rough with a nice udder especially when full and mean as a junk yard dog. She hated being milked, being clipped,

being brushed, washed or being looked at. For the record and to her credit, Linda did produce the Reserve All-American Miss Linda EX-92 by Copyright for Pinehurst. Thirteen nominations to end one of the most successful ventures in showing Holstein in the history of the breed. Those words “NOMINATED All-American” were added to the official pedigree from Holstein Association and breeders would use those three words as a marketing tool but it would be a fair statement that none used it quite as successfully as the master of Pinehurst, David Bachmann. Magnussen, Executive Secretary. “Large amounts of milk are one thing; but when coupled with components, you can see the added value gained with Brown Swiss.” Her just-completed lactation converts to 89,746 pounds of Energy Corrected Milk. She has calved 6 times, producing 266,870m 14,869f 9,938p to-date. Her latest classification has her at ‘3E94/95ms’. In 2018, she was Reserve Grand Champion at the International Brown Swiss Show and named All-American Aged Cow. In 2014 she was HM All-American Senior 2 and nominated in 2015.
