Above the Clouds!

s I write this, the calendar is inexorably marching to the end of 2023, with a new year just around the corner. 2023 was a strange bird, full of highs and lows, personally and professionally. I can’t say I will be sad to see it go. It was a hard year for many.

We said goodbye to so many good people in our business this year. It seemed like week after week, we heard news of another gifted cow person or another pillar of our industry passing away. I’m thinking of those people, those names fondly this week; thankful that I had the chance to know so many of them. But I also wonder who will step up and fill their shoes. So many people gone that were mentors, volunteers, cheerleaders, advisors on all levels - from local 4-H clubs and county fairs to national associations and national shows. We’re the poorer for it, but only until the next group of knowledgeable, open-hearted folks step up to take on those roles. So, that’s one of my goals for 2024 - to find places and organizations to give my time and fill that need - from the local level and beyond. It’s been easy for me to step around those spots because of my job - ‘oh, I travel too much to be on that committee’ or ‘that happens at a really busy time of year for me’ - just excuses, really. As the famous quote says, “If not now then when, if not me then who?” If you have a little spare time to give, I encourage you to do the same. We had a wonderful outing in Nashville in December to announce the Holstein & Jersey All-American nominations - and this year, we were delighted to have the Red & White Association join us as well. It’s a fantastic weekend full of celebration and good spirits, much enjoyed and much needed at the end of this year’s show season.

sound system and said, ‘Hang in there. It’s a bit rough now, but we’re gaining altitude and soon we’ll be above the clouds. That’s where we’ll have greater visibility and smoother flying.’ And it hit me - that’s the perfect analogy to navigate through the end of the year and into the next: get above the clouds. You’re still going the same direction, but do what you can to make it a smoother ride and see farther out ahead. Easier said than done, granted. Sometimes life gives you clouds and a bumpy ride. But 2024 stretches out ahead with its challenges and its joys. What are some good things you’re looking forward to this year? Sharpen your vision on a few of those to help the dark winter days move more quickly. I’m very, very fortunate to have the opportunity to go to Australia for International Dairy Week - a first for me, and something I’m so very excited about. Volunteering more in my circles, being grateful for new opportunities, prioritizing time spent with friends and family - those are my New Year’s resolutions. They don’t sound like anything that can change the world, but I think they may very much be life-changing for me. Julie & I are so grateful to all of you who have been along on the ride with Cowsmo! Thank you to everyone who clicked on the website or opened the magazine in 2023. Thank you to all of you who helped sponsor show coverage, advertised a sale, or entered one of the All-American contests. We’re planning bigger and better things in the new year! Here’s to 2024 - may it be a gentle one, a prosperous one for all of you - full of blue skies and smoother flying.

On the flight home from Nashville, the plane had just taken off and we having a bit of a bumpy ride. The pilot came over the

Betley Family Farms MOVING AHEAD ON ALL FRONTS!

I

f we asked you to give us herd names of operations that milk thousands of cows but also have a very successful high-type breeding program and show string, we think we could guess several of the names you might mention: Milksource, Oakfield Corners, Vierra, Westcoast, Reyncrest, Kash-In, to start with a few. After the 2023 International Red & White Show, there was a new name to add to that list: Betley Family Farms of Pulaski, WI. The Betley prefix was carried by four heifers in the top four of their class at the show, including two class winners. Betley Lightsout-Red-ET was the 1st place winter yearling exhibited by Claire & Jacob Betley. An Unstopabull daughter out of their franchise broodcow, OCD Jo Lionking-Red-ET VG-88, Lightsout took home armloads of hardware as she was the Junior Champion of the Junior Show, Reserve Junior Champion of the Open Show, Champion Bred & Owned of both the Junior & Open Shows, and she anchored the Betley’s winning junior best three females group. Betley Warrior Lynx-Red won the winter calf class for Kamryn, Kate & Colt

Kasbergen of Tulare, CA, and was Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Show. A Warrior granddaughter of Lionlike, Lynx was purchased from the 2023 Breeders Bash, a sale that was a collaboration of seven Wisconsin breeders that was hosted by the Jauquet family of Synergy Dairy, nearby neighbors of the Betleys. Third to her in The Betley family LtoR: Jeff, Claire, Jacob & Jena. that class was Betleys Lets Party-Red-ET, an Unstopabull Those impressive results don’t distract out of Lionking and thus a full sister the family from their main focus at home: to Lightsout, purchased privately their commercial dairy, where they milk Expo week by Proulx, Ferme Fortale, 3,200 cows in a 50-stall DeLaval rotary Weeksdale, Stitchs Holsteins & JM Valley. parlor. Now a third-generation operation, Betley Family Farms originated at its current location in 1943 when Jeff’s grandfather, Felix, made a go of dairy farming with 13 cows on 40 acres while also holding down a factory job. When Jeff took over in 1991, the herd numbered 220 cows and it continued to grow over the next 20 years to the present numbers. Progressive producers are always thinking ahead, and there are plans in the near future to grow the herd to 4,000 cows and to install a new 120-cow DeLaval rotary milking system. The entirely Holstein herd averages 101lbs. milk per cow per day with a 4.2% fat and 3.3% protein. The farm employs a well-trained and established team of 32 employees which includes both the herd and shop personnel. Jeff and Jena are still very active with daily tasks along with the kids who take more to the heifer facility and assist with daily chores. The Betleys also run 5,400 acres of corn, hay, soybeans, and wheat. Along with the home dairy, they are part owner of a heifer yard, Oshkosh Heifer Development, in Oshkosh, Nebraska, where their heifers are raised from 5 months of age until they hit 90 days before calving when they return to Wisconsin. As Claire and Jacob became interested in showing cattle at the local county fair and Wisconsin State Fair over the past five years, Registered Holsteins became an interest. Today, about 200 head in the herd are registered, and they began classifying in 2020. Trent & Laura Styczynski were hired as herd managers, and they have helped the family increase production

and numbers in the registered show cattle side of things, with an eye to maximizing performance. They both have experience with show cattle as Trent had previously worked for Milksource, Gen-Com, and Duckett Holsteins, and Laura with Budjon Farms. The couple oversees the show string, and help teach the kids about feeding and the day-to-day work that goes into developing successful show animals. Recently completed at the farm is a new barn to house several of their high-type and highgenomic animals, as well as a few head that they board and Betleys Lets Party-Red-ET, a full sister to Lightsout, was purchased flush for outside customers. With their high-type matings, they are studying traits to try to fit both aspects of the farm - both show and production. They’re using bulls with enough strength in proportion to stature, more correct pin setting, and good feet & leg composites to create a balanced cow with dairy strength that will mature through age and lactations. Not every show heifer makes a show cow, so they want to be sure all animals from the show program can still be a profitable cow in the herd. In the commercial herd, matings focus on health traits, modern size, and production. They are believers in DWP$ as a benchmark for identifying which genetics lines they want to build on, and which will be bred to beef. They’ve had success with the Alta Genetics breeding program, and have worked closely with the bull stud to control inventory in order to produce the exact number of females they need each month. They are also in involved with ECO Angus, and will breed their lower end genetics to their own bulls that they collect for a few partnering dairies. Trent and Laura work with Claire and Jacob with the show cattle, and also manage the marketing for the operation. Many show-caliber animals are sold via word of mouth and social media, though they have more aggressively consigned to sales in the past couple of years, as well as hosting the 2023 Breeders Bash Sale. Betleys are not afraid to add to their herd as well and look for cows that have udders with great attachments

and walk on a correct set of feet and legs. There’s more to making a show cow than those two traits, and they will develop rib structure, stature, dairyness with management and environment, but udders and mobility are crucial to a cow’s success in any facility. Pedigrees are also a deciding factor as they value good proven bulls and powerful maternal lines in predicting a fruitful purchase. One cow that checked all of those boxes was Synergy Spikes Sequel-Red EX-93, who was Lot 1 in the Breeders Bash Sale. Scored EX-91 at the time and carrying the Reserve Junior All-American R&W Junior 3-Year-Old title from 2022, the Altitude daughter from six generations of VG & EX cows was the priority of the sale for the Betleys. She topped the sale at $28,000 as they bought her in partnership with one of her co-consignors and breeder, Evan Jauquet. It was another astute purchase as Sequel calved again in August and went on to be 5th place open and first-place junior owned animal in the 4-year-old class at the 2023 International Red & White Show, and was subsequently named Senior & Grand Champion and Champion Bred & Owned of the Junior Show. Nominated All-American R&W 4-Year-Old for 2023, Sequel was named the 2023 Junior AllAmerican R&W 4-Year-Old as well.

organizations away from the farm as well. Jeff is on the Board of Directors of Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin, and the family is active with Pulaski FFA, high school sports, and their church as well. Of course, plans for the 2024 show season are well underway, and they are also gearing up for another Breeders Bash Sale in 2025. Northeast Wisconsin may be known as the region of ‘big herds’ in the Badger state, but add Betley Family Farms to the growing list of commercial producers that see the added value in high-type registered cattle! By Kathleen O’Keefe

They contribute their time to Fittingly, the first cow with the first IVF session in the new facility was OCD Jo Lionking-Red-ET VG-88, the cow fundamental to so much of the Betley’s show ring success.

THE LEGACY OF LEGENDS: Ayrshire Excellence at Vieux Village N

estled in the picturesque rolling hills of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, Vieux Village stands as a living testament to the Foley family’s unwavering dedication to Ayrshire excellence. Florent Foley, along with his wife Chantale, manage a herd of 100 Ayrshires, including 50 milking cows in collaboration with their daughters, Bianca and Vicky, while their son, Steve, oversees the machinery and crops. The farm consists of 400 acres of land, with 250 acres dedicated to cultivation and grazing. Cows are milked twice a day in a tie-stall barn. Between May and November, the majority of the cattle graze in the pasture, with show cows staying inside under fans during the day, and going out to pasture at night. In the main barn, there is housing for milking cows and calves, while a second barn is dedicated to heifers and dry cows, providing them with outdoor access throughout every season.

Kellogg and Charleston: Shaping a Legacy As you enter the farmyard, your gaze is immediately drawn to two majestic rocks. Each of these rocks carries profound significance, serving as the solemn resting site for two legendary Ayrshire sire: Blackaddar BB Kellogg and Cedarvale Charleston. Kellogg, privately collected by his PEI-based breeder, Norman Boswall, and Bruce Mode of Ontario, became the foundation of the Vieux Village herd. His resounding influence in the breed at large has seen him sire champions around the world, and he was the Premier Sire of the World Dairy Expo Ayrshire Show an astonishing 13 times. Living to a remarkable 17 years of age, Kellogg’s impact on the breed endures. In the late summer of 1992, a transformative opportunity presented itself to Vieux Village. Florent, a director of Ayrshire

Canada, received a proposal from Norman Boswall, the breeder and co-owner of BB Kellogg along with Bruce Mode. Boswall expressed the desire to find a home for Kellogg, not for sale but in exchange for the privilege of using the exceptional bull. Recognizing the potential, Florent consulted with his family, and a unanimous decision was made to welcome BB Kellogg to their farm. Over ten impactful years, BB Kellogg, having made the journey from Prince Edward Island to Quebec, left an indelible mark on Vieux Village. Three times, he ventured to Ontario for collection at Eastern Breeders, returning each time to the farm. The legacy of BB Kellogg, who passed away in 2002, continued to thrive through the bloodlines of every animal at Vieux Village, leading to a string of All Canadian victories with his daughters. Following in Kellogg’s hoofprints, Cedarvale Charleston then imprinted the herd with his dominant bloodlines. The winter of 2002 brought Ayrshire Canada classifier Charles Fowler to Vieux Village. Having spotted a promising bull in Indiana the previous fall, Fowler suggested that Cedarvale Charleston would be the perfect complement to the herd’s BB Kellogg daughters. A conversation with the young bull’s breeder, Brian Schilling, ensued and resulted in the arrival of Cedarvale Charleston in the spring of 2003. This heralded the beginning of his 14-year presence at Vieux Village.

not only enhanced the robustness of the offspring but also added rib and power to the bloodlines. These esteemed bulls serve as enduring icons of the Ayrshire breed, leaving a legacy that has been instrumental in securing victories for the Foley family throughout the past decade. Their powerful influence echoes through a combined registration of over 3,000 daughters in Canada. The Foley Family: A Journey of Passion In 1981, Florent Foley acquired his first purebred Ayrshire, Ayrwick Intense Anne EX-90 11*, unknowingly setting the stage for a legacy. Anne, the Reserve Grand Champion at the 1982 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, marked the beginning of the Vieux Village prefix. Buoyed by her triumph, Florent embarked on a mission to expand the herd, initiating the practice of embryo transfer with this remarkable cow.

The strategic decision to introduce Cedarvale Charleston proved to be a game-changer. With his infusion into the breeding program, the show cows born at Vieux Village bore the distinctive mark of Charleston dams and BB Kellogg granddams. The cross

The late ‘80s saw the addition of Brantholm Barb’s Melody EX2E 90 5* from Ontario and Peterbarb Dodie EX-5E 91 11* from the U.S. Alongside Anne, Melody claimed the Grand Champion title at Expo Quebec in 1989, laying the foundation for the prizewinning herd.

significant moment unfolded when Vieux Village C. Diamond EX-4E 95, a Charleston daughter, clinched the title of Grand Champion Ayrshire in her debut, marking the start of an extraordinary journey for the Foley family.

Passing the Legacy: A Family Affair Inspired by their father Florent’s unwavering commitment to breeding superior Ayrshire cows, Bianca and Vicky experienced their inaugural triumph at the 2014 World Dairy Expo. The

Recalling this pivotal moment, Bianca shares, “It was an unparalleled experience, a dream for our family to emerge victorious at one of the most esteemed dairy shows. Since that day, we have been driven to continue that ongoing success, aspiring to carve a path that echoes in our father’s footsteps.”

Breeding Excellence

Vieux Village C. Diamond was tapped as Grand Champion at the 2014 Royal Winter Fair, and served as the spark for the Foley’s unwavering drive for success.

For the Foley family, breeding champion cows centers around prioritizing conformation. The herd boasts 35 EX, 26 VG, and 1 GP with Vieux Village C Trixie EX-95 7E securing the highest score. Traits like a solid set of feet and legs, a robust udder, ample rib, and stature are pivotal in their pursuit of excellence.

cows originally purchased by Florent. Continuing that maternal legacy, Montana added a heifer into the fold, sired by Ruisseau Claire Tuxedo. Looking ahead, Montana’s dam is scheduled to be worked in an upcoming IVF session with the obvious mating once again to Duo Star Gentleman.

Their most recent triumph was capturing the Grand Champion & Reserve Grand Champion Ayrshire titles at the 2023 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair with their senior 3-year-old, Vieux Village G Montana VG-89 and View Village Gentleman Joy EX-94. The two Duo Star Gentleman daughters have taken center stage in the herd, winning the admiration of breeders worldwide with their style and power. Montana was also the Intermediate Champion at the 2023 International Ayrshire Show in Madison.

The anticipation doesn’t stop there. The Foleys eagerly await the birth of calves from Joy and Montana sired by Marilie Melios, due to arrive in June 2024. Both cows will be IVF’d to Palmyra Lochinvar Reynolds in January. Gentleman Joy has produced two daughters sired by Blackaddar BB Kellogg. The oldest, Vieux Village BK Joya, will be a senior 2-year-old in 2024, and bears a great resemblance to Joy.

Montana’s dam, Vieux Village C. Monia, is a Charleston daughter. Now 13 years old, Monia is still part of the herd and recently achieved an impressive EX-93 9E classification score. Montana’s fourth dam is Brantholm Barb’s Melody, one of the three brood

Looking ahead, the future holds great promise for Montana, Joy, and their progeny, continuing to shape a narrative of excellence at Vieux Village. So, what’s next for the Foley’s? The sisters are hoping for another Champion at World Dairy Expo - stay tuned! By Hannah Crawford

THE STORIED LEGACY & GLOBAL IMPACT OF

HILLTOP ACRES FARM

F

ounded in 1854, Hilltop Acres Farm stands as an 8th generation family farm nestled in Northeast Iowa just outside of Calmar, Iowa - one of the oldest familyowned farms west of the Mississippi River. Dennis and Barb Mashek, along with their sons Josh and Tanner, are the owners and operators, where they milk 450 registered Brown Swiss cows, three times a day in a double 12 parlor. In addition to the dairy herd, the farm cultivates corn and alfalfa on 1100 acres, both owned and rented. Dennis’ parents, John and Dorothy, are the fifth generation on the family farm, and Dennis and his wife Barb represent the sixth generation. Their two sons, Josh and Tanner and daughter Kylie are the seventh generation, and the grandchildren who are already expressing interest in show calves are the eighth generation. Dennis and Barb farmed alongside Dennis’s parents, until 1989 when they joined as 50/50 partners where Dennis and Barb purchased the feed, livestock and machinery. In 1999, Dennis and Barb purchased the 480acre farm. Dennis gives John credit for converting a herd of mostly grade cattle through the association’s IE program into a registered Brown Swiss herd. This fully registered herd was the foundation for Hilltop Acres Farm current success in marketing registered genetics worldwide 40 « COWSMOPOLITAN Winter 2023

through cows, heifers, bulls and embryos. Reflecting on the evolution of the farm, Dennis recounts other pivotal moments, such as the 1997 transition from a tie-stall set up to a free-stall barn and double-6 parlor for the herd of 150-200 cows. This herd size was perfect for Dennis to Four generations of the Mashek family, pictured during the World Brown Swiss manage while he and Conference in 2022. Barb raised a family. Even with the boys back home, Dennis hasn’t stepped down, but rather works In 2014, when Tanner was returning to the alongside them, where he offers insight farm, Dennis made a strategic decision to while letting his sons take on more and gather key stakeholders like his banker, more responsibility. Barb maintains nutritionist, veterinarian, milk inspector, her key roles on the farm taking care and dairy extension specialist, and of the calves, handling book work and sought their advice for a new expansion. managing the landscaping. The move paid off and resulted in

several successful strategies, such as the decision to be their own milk hauler. The Masheks haul their milk 90 miles, 4-5 times a week to Meister Cheese, thus eliminating the potential challenge of finding, and keeping a consistent hauler. Dennis emphasizes their commitment to diversity, as a strategy to mitigate the challenges inherent in dairy farming. As the story unfolds, the family’s involvement in genomics became a pivotal chapter. The introduction of genomic testing brought a new knowledge and a different vision to their breeding program. Dennis’ willingness to embrace change, and entrust decisions to the next generation, has propelled Hilltop Acres Farm to the forefront of the Brown Swiss breed indexes. In 2023, Hilltop Acres bred the top Genomic Merit Heifer at the International Brown Swiss Show - Hilltop Acres D Tiana-ETV. Sired by HF Design ET and out of Hilltop Acres Sky Toyota-ETV, Tiana was also third place spring calf at the show, and 1st place spring calf at Iowa State Fair earlier in the year. Additionally, Hilltop Acres bulls sired more than 60 daughters exhibited in the 2023 International Brown Swiss Show. That sire list encompasses more than 10 bulls, including DareDevil, Diego, Kickstart and Martini. More than 100 Hilltop Acres-bred bulls have entered the lineups at major AI organizations such as Select Sires, New Generation Genetics, ST Genetics, and ABS, to name a few. The farm chooses not to exclusively commit to a single bull stud as they believe in offering their genetics worldwide, and find value in having bulls available for all a full spectrum of breeders. Today, the farm has nearly 80 bulls on site, ranging in age from 2 months

Hilltop Acres D Tiana-ETV was named the Top Genomic Merit Heifer of the 2023 International Brown Swiss Show. She was leased by Brinlee Courtney. At right, Tanner & Dennis Mashek accepted the award from Brown Swiss Executive Secretary Norm Magnussen during the show. to 12 months old, raised in loose housing with headlocks and concrete walls. . The Masheks genomic test everything on the farm, and the bulls sold privately are sold with their test results, which provides added value to buyers. Along with breeding and developing bulls, the farm also does embryo work. They utilize Trans Ova Genetics and Driven Embryo Services, working their top heifers and cows often, and implanting embryos into their own recipients, primarily milking cows. According to Dennis, “I prefer to use cows for embryos for two reasons: calving ease and the best genetics on the farm should be standing there in the heifer pen.” In selecting a favorite from their expansive operation, Dennis picked Hilltop Acres Jetway Dixi ‘2E-92’, as the most influential brood cow. She produced bulls that excelled in AI, notably sons, Dominate and Dalton, and great-grandson, Dynasty. The legacy of the Dixi cow family endures to this day, with a subtle alteration from the letter ‘D’ to ‘P’ for the offspring

Hilltop Acres Jetway Dixi 2E-92 is recognized as one the Mashek’s most influential brood cows, from both her sons and daughters influences.

names, a modification prompted by the abundance of ‘D’ names within the lineage. Hilltop Acres Cad Paula ‘VG-87’ 88-MS, a Cadence daughter and current herd matriarch, produced popular AI sires such as AltaPhoenix, Pontiac, Powerball, Powerhouse, Paparazzi, Pacman, and Skyfox. Her ‘E91’ Kickstart daughter, Hilltop Acres Princess ETV, is the dam of Prince and Perfection, both top PPR ranking bulls, and they mark the family’s continuing success over 25 years. Tanner chooses different favorites: Hilltop Acres Vigor Dolly-ET ‘E93’ 93-MS and Hilltop Acres Vigor Divinity ‘E91’ 92-MS rise to the top of his list as they are his first bred and owned cows. Their dam was Cutting Edge Premium Dally ‘E91’ 92-MS, who was purchased at the 2008 National Brown Swiss Convention in Dubuque, Iowa. Dolly and Divinity were #1 and #2 genomic heifers in the breed, and their family branched out to produce such bulls as Hilltop Acres B Daredevil, Hilltop Acres Dynamite Diego and Hilltop Acres W Durham.

Hilltop Acres Cad Paula VG-87 is a Cadence descendant of Dixi and started the “P” branch. She is also the dam of multiple top ranking PPR bulls. COWSMOPOLITAN Winter 2023 » 41

Left, Hilltop Acres Vigor Dolly-ET E93, and right, Hilltop Acres Vigor Divinity E91, are Tanner’s first bred & owned cows, and rank as his favorites. Full sisters hailing from Cutting Edge Premium Dally, they are the former #1 and #2 genomic heifers of the breed, and top sires like Daredevil, Diego and Durham all hail from their line. On the paternal side, the Masheks credit Sun-Made Vigor as an influential sire in the development of the herd. Vigor left a number of balanced cows and helped shape their breeding approach to keep producing those kind of balanced individuals. Good feet and legs, udders that withstand the test of time, open rib and moderate frames along with high net merit make the kind of Brown Swiss that can thrive in all management settings. Their use of Vigor occurred when the genomic era was just beginning, and his impact through genomics as well as type helped move Hilltop Acres Farm cattle to the top of the index lists.

The legacy of Hilltop Acres Farm is not just measured in milk production and AI sires, but in the lives touched around the world. From selling genetics to Mexico and the Dominican Republic to judging shows in South America and Australia to providing dairy solutions in Hawaii, the farm’s impact reaches far beyond its Iowa roots, and has played a significant role in shaping the Brown Swiss breed beyond American borders. Dennis attributes much of their success to a good work ethic and a positive attitude, echoing advice that he received along the journey. Influential figures like Dan Gilbert, Angelo Pozzatti, and Werner Duss, alongside

supportive colleagues like Wayne Sliker, Brian Garrison and Jake Hushon, have played key roles in shaping the farm’s vision and efforts. In addition to work on the farm, Dennis, Josh and Tanner are all involved in industry organizations such as the Brown Swiss Association, Midwest Milk Producers, Ag Spectrum, and Dairy Farmers of America. In 2022, they were the recipients of the Brown Swiss Association Active Master Breeder Award, a testament to a family committed to agriculture, innovation, and the future of the Brown Swiss breed. GETTING YOUR START IN CLIPPING & FITTING! PART TWO - THE BLADES AND BEYOND!

Part two of a series with Kyle Stockdale of KYVision Clipping of Keene, Ontario. No one has done more to demystify the process of getting started with clipping and fitting than Kyle. His Facebook page - www.facebook.com/KyVisionblades - is a stream of valuable information about clipping equipment, fitting, show heifer care, and more. Kyle has graciously agreed do a series of articles with us about the basic equipment needed to get started fitting your own dairy cattle! In Part One of our series - find it in the Fall 2023 issue of Cowsmo we talked about investing in and caring for your first set of clippers, whether they were brand new or inherited. In this article, I’ll touch on the next step - outfitting yourself with other tools that will help you fit your animal and more blades to do particular jobs. Here’s a list for a good start. 1. A LARGE SET OF CLIPPERS - We covered this in the last article, where I talked about getting yourself a set of large clippers. A good brand name clipper like Aesculap, andis or Heiniger will make clipping much more enjoyable for you and your animals. (I personally recommend the Aesculap Econom II.) If you get to the point where you can invest in a second set, that will be handy, as you won’t need to be switching out blades constantly. 2. A GOOD BLOW DRYER - My personal favourite is the Rusk Speed Freak, but any hair dryer that kicks out lots of heat at high speed is good. You want something in the 2000 watt range and make sure it fits in your hand easily. 3. SMALL CORDED CLIPPERS - Good for udders, and can be used for ears or legs if need be, provided you have the proper blades. Again, a good brand will make life much easier. My favourite are the Andis Super 2 Speeds . They are small enough to use easily, but powerful enough to get the job done. I tend to steer people away from Osters as they have a tendency to burn up quickly with heavy use. 4. SMALL CORDLESS CLIPPERS - There are some options here, and they are not absolutely needed, but make clipping legs, ears and heads much easier. They leave a really nice finish on the coat of your animal. Wahl makes some really nice models: the Moser Arco is probably the most popular, but the Chromado and Bravura are good clippers as well depending on how much you will be using them. They all take Wahl 5-in-1 blades making them one of the most versatile things in your clipping bag. 5. TOPLINE BRUSH - A good quality topline brush is a must have! Denman makes one of, if not the best, brushes in the business. My personal favourite is the black bristle 9-row brush, but all of the Denman topline brushes are good. Don’t cheap out and get something from Walmart as I have had the heat from my blower literally melt the bristles into a solid block of plastic. 6. OIL - A good quality clipper oil is a must have. (Again, we talked about this in Part One.) No WD-40 or Kool Lube here. Branded clipper oil, Remington oil or 3-in-One oil is best and will add years to the life of your clipper. 7. BLADES - An assortment of blades will enable you to do a more refined job of clipping an animal than have just one set. In my clipping bag, I always carried several sets. For my large clippers: Starting with an Oster 84AU bottom (comb) blade paired with an Aesculap 505 or Andis 23 top (cutter) blade (I prefer the 505). The bottom blade can be 44 « COWSMOPOLITAN Winter 2023

‘ground down’ to various thicknesses for different purposes. I carried one very thin set of topline blades, two thin cow blades, one thin heifer blade, one thick heifer blade, 2-3 sets of Andis 31s for barn clipping, and a set of pluckers for myself when clipping off heifers in the winter at home. For my small corded clippers: one set of 30s, one set of ceramic 40s, 2-3 sets of Andis ceramic 50s. For my cordless small clippers: 2-3 sets of 5-in-1 blades. 8. (OPTIONAL) - A large blower to blow dust, straw and hair off an animal before, during and after the clipping process. I have a “mini-circ” blower and it has plenty of power for what I need. I get lots of questions about what blades/clippers to use on what parts of their animal. So hopefully this will help give you some basic guidance when you are beginning to learn to clip Now, the disclaimer here is that every heifer is different, and these are just guidelines to help you get started! Becoming skilled and proficient at clipping takes hours and hours of practice on many different animals - clip as many as you can at all times of the year and you will get better! With all that being said, the diagram below should help you get started in your fitting journey. Starting with the tail and using your small corded clippers, we need a #50 or #40 A5 (snap on) style blade. If you’re clipping a black tail, use a #40 (50’s will cut closer and make it look grey). Sticking with our small clipper and our 40 and 50 blades, we move up to the ears. Once again, to avoid the grey look on black ears, we use 40’s on the outside. When we clip the inside of the ears, we will use 50’s to make them look as dairy and clean! Moving to the rear legs, I like to clip up to the tendon that runs above the hock area. If I’m using my large clippers, I use a tighter ground down Oster 84 (such as a KyVision Holstein Cow blade) or the same slightly thicker ground down Oster 84 (such as a KyVision Holstein Heifer blade) that I will do the body with. Often, I clip the rear legs with my small cordless Wahl Chromado clippers and 5-in-1 blades on the middle setting. You can also use a #30 blade if you’re using a corded small clipper.

On the front legs, head and neck, I use the same blades as on their rear legs and clip following a line from where their neck meets their shoulder, down their shoulder blade to their elbow. I will also use the 5-in-1 blades here for touch ups around the feet, but you can use 30’s as well. Moving to the main body of the heifer, we use that slightly thicker ground down Oster 84 (such as a KyVision Holstein Heifer blade) making sure to go against the hair, then sometimes back against the hair at a different angle to achieve the smoothest “finish”. We will also use this blade to blend in the belly hair and topline to the body. Make sure to use the thinner blade (such as a KyVision Holstein Cow blade) to blend the body into the legs, shoulder and neck. Now, if you’re new to clipping, you’re saying, “What the heck are ground down blades?” Like everything, fitting techniques have changed over the years, and they have evolved to accentuate the dairyness and cleanliness of today’s modern dairy cattle. That means clipping tighter, or closer to the skin, than fitters did years ago. In a really dairy cow, you can see the veins popping across her body, and it’s kind of aweinspiring - like seeing a body builder in full flex! You won’t get that same clean, sleek look and finish with most blades off the shelf, even surgical blades.

Left, before & after of “ground down” blades; right before & after of sanded teeth.

we want our Holsteins to look black and white, not pink Top quality is inRemember, little things. and grey! Jersey cattle and ultra dairy black cattle are best clipped

So let’s talk about what they are. 99% of ground down blades being used on dairy cattle worldwide are Oster 84AU blades (often called 84s like in our above clipping discussion). When an 84 comes fresh out of the package, it is roughly 2.7 millimeters thick. To get them to clip closer to the skin, we grind them down either on a wheel or with a surface grinder to get them ‘thinner’ than how we buy them. You can buy ground down blades from several people and companies, including myself. Experimenting over the years, I have come up with seven standard thicknesses: Holstein Heifer and Cow blades, Jersey Heifer and Cow blades, Brown Swiss Heifer and Cow blades that are in between Jersey and Holstein, and finally a super thin blade for toplines. These different thicknesses are made to work on different ages, breeds, and styles of animals.

tighter. For Brown Swiss, it depends on body condition, but I think they can look real good clipped quite tight as well. Practice makes perfect when determining what thickness of blade should be used on what animals. The bottom line is we want these cattle to look dairy, clean and angular as possible and ground down tight blades are an essential part of getting your animal to have the look to win.

A tip to make your clipping experience even better while using the 84AU blades is to take some sandpaper or emory cloth and lightly round the sharp teeth. This will prevent the blades from “biting in” or “digging” the skin of your animal while clipping. Above are a few photos comparing a full thickness 84 beside a ground down KyVision Holstein cow blade, and a before and after of a blade with the teeth rounded to prevent “digging”.

“It’s the little things that make big things possible”

Hopefully, this helps give you a start and an idea of where to use which blades. Next time, we’ll talk about toplines, some general show heifer care, and hair prep as we move into the 2024 show season. Happy clipping!

Top quality is in little things.

Now not every animal should be clipped skin tight! White cows and heifers present better when they are clipped a little thicker.

Top quality is in little things. “It’s the little things that make big things possible” “It’s the little things that make big things possible” YOUR 24/7 GLOBAL EMBRYOSALE

MARLU FARM We’re delighted to bring you some Jersey history thanks to the research and writing talents of Caylei Arnold! Caylei is a passionate Jersey breeder from Connecticut, and is an administrator and dedicated contributor to the American Jersey Cattle History page on Facebook – give that a follow if you want to immerse yourself in historical Jersey photos, pedigrees, history, and trivia!

M

arlu Farm was established in 1941 and was in operation for 29 years as a registered jersey herd until its dispersal began in 1970. The farm was owned by Mr. Maurice Pollak of West Long Branch, New Jersey. Maurice was a successful businessman; owning Maurice Pollak Investment Office as a second career to his primary business: Henry Pollak Inc of Manhattan which imported textiles from 1928 through 1958 for hat making. He became interested in the registered jerseys and founded Marlu Farm with his wife, Lucile; Marlu being a combination of he and his wife’s first names. Mr. Pollak founded the herd with a group of the best females he could purchase based on balanced type, production and deep pedigrees. From that group, Pollak bred a herd of jerseys with the primary focus he deemed as the “winning combination”: Refined Type, Superior Udders, and High Milk Flow. He believed that the combination of all three would elevate the breed, promote it to its’ best interest and satisfy the farms’ customers. All of this was done with the philosophy; “No Herd is Greater than the Foundation upon which it is Built.” The herd was so successful over the span of 28 years that virtually every registered jersey in America likely has the influence of Marlu in its pedigree, whether they be high type, genomic, or commercial cattle. The farm would produce 93 Senior Superior/Superior Sires and 50 Hall of Fame producers. With their primary focus being on production and the cattle in the barns at home; Marlu rarely showed but when they did, they took home top honors at the All American and their breeding was (and is) frequently found behind the nation’s top winners. They were a herd that was bridging a gap in an era where the jersey breed was known for high components but little volume and the herds that were known for volume had functional type, but not pretty cattle by any means. Marlu produced jerseys that could do it all; put milk in the tank with high components and look good doing it.

Marlu Milady when she was crowned the new National Milk Champion in 1957. LtoR: Curtis Hobson, Dr. JW Bartlett, Maurice Pollak, Charles Bohl, and Jerry Bohn. In 1955, The AJCA Master Breeder Award would go to Maurice Pollak and the Marlu herd for their contributions to the breed. At the 1962 All American Jersey Show, Marlu Farm would be awarded Premier Breeder. The herd was most notably managed by Curtis Hobson with Assistant Manager, Lowell “Pappy” Willis. They would be the cowmen etching Marlu into the history books. Despite very limited showing, Willis would be awarded the Klussendorf Award in 1980 for his contributions and care to the cattle entrusted to him. Curtis would manage Marlu for 18 years and following the dispersal he would move to Mayfield Farm until his retirement. Curtis would also become an AJCA Master Breeder Award recipient. The most well-known family to be bred by Marlu was the MiladyZinnia family. Marlu Milady would set a national breed record for a single lactation (surpassing that record in her following lactation) while also being a fourth-generation Excellent cow. The Milady family would eventually produce the breed’s first eighth generation Excellent and the breed’s first six generations of Medal of Merit cows, all classified Excellent. Born in March of 1948; Marlu Milady was sired by Favorite Commando, a Brampton Worlds Records son out of Brampton Lady Basilua who was a daughter of the World Record cow; Brampton Basilua.

1962 1st place Best Three Females - All three cows were classified EX and all three were either Medal of Merit or Gold Medal cows. 54 « COWSMOPOLITAN Winter 2023

Milady’s dam was Advancer Marlu Zinnia (173,594 lbs. milk lifetime), a daughter of Wonderful Advancer and Dandy Sparkling Zinnia (142,876 lbs. milk lifetime) who was a daughter of Xenia Sparkling Ivy. Marlu Milady would become the first registered Jersey to surpass 25,000lbs of milk in a year (she would have 4 records over 23,000lbs of milk) Not only was she a high type,

Winners Bred and/or Exhibited by Marlu include: Marlu Milad Fada: 1967 Reserve National Grand Champion & Jersey Jug Winner Marlu Milestone Jester Nine, Marlu Ansom Bright Blonde, Marlu Patient Glory and Marlu Fashion Empress: the 1961, 1965, 1970 and 1971 Reserve National Jersey Jug Winners respectively Marlu Royal Supreme: The 1961 National Grand Champion Bull Marlu Commando Etta: 2x Grand Champion Ohio State Fair and at the time, the highest living lifetime milk & fat producer Marlu Milestone Lady: 1962 All American 1st place 2-year-old Milestone One Carat: 1974 Reserve All American 4-year-old & Grand Champion at the Royal Marlu Fanfare Milady’s Carat: 1974 Nominated All American Aged Cow Marlu Patient Glory: Grand Champion Eastern States Exposition Marlu Milestone (1st Get of Sire): 1962 All American Jersey Show 1st Best Three Females: 1962 All American Jersey Show high producing individual; but she bred true to her offspring, producing 11 natural calves in her lifetime. Milady would produce Marlu Milady’s Fashion who was the breeds’ first cow to produce 20,000 milk and 1,000lbs fat cow in six consecutive lactations. Her son, Marlu Milad would become the highest selling jersey bull at the time (1966), selling for more than $70,000 to ABS. That record was previously held by the great Sybil’s Gamboge who sold for $65,000 in 1919. Marlu Milady’s most successful son was Marlu Milestone. Born in August 1954, Milestone was a son of Sparkle Supreme and would eventually be owned by Marlu and a small partnership group including Mayfield Farms. Milestone would spend his AI career at Curtiss before returning to Marlu Farm and living out his days. He was euthanized near the age of 17 after suffering a hip injury and was buried on the farm next to his dam, Marlu Milady, and his record setting maternal-sister, Milady’s Fashion. Milestone was a breed changing bull and was named the winner of the AJCA Greatest Bull Contest in 1972. His greatest influence can be found through his son, Milestone Generator. Generator was THE breed changing bull, siring a will to milk, open ribbed daughters, and defined bone. He produced the type of cow that Marlu strived for: Milk in the tank and breed leading type. Generator

would continue his influence through breed-changing sons and daughters; he sired the dams of both Top Brass and Duncan and the dam of Sooner was also sired by a son of his. Cows like Generators Topsy, Generators Sweet Dreams and Generators Imp would become brood cows Maurice Pollak and J Fred Davis following the sale of known by name in the the remaining Marlu cattle to JFD Farms. years that followed. Unfortunately, despite Marlu Milady’s success and prominence in breed history, Milady and her sire would become a source of Limber Leg (LL) in Jersey Cattle. Her sire, Favorite Commando was a carrier and two of Milady’s popular sons would also be listed carriers; Marlu Milad and Marlu Milady Fashion Prince. Limber Legs is inherited as a simple recessive which meant that the popularity of Commando and the Milady family, as well as the intense practice of line breeding in-demand cow families during this timeframe, meant that the issue was prevalent until identification was made, and careful breeding decisions soon followed. Despite this, her positive influence on the breed was immense and still talked about today. Marlu’s herd was drastically reduced through sales in 1970, leaving 101 animals remaining on the property consisting of unbred heifers and cows aged over 10 years. Many of the aged cows were once prominent names, like Beacon BAS Patience. In 1971, the remaining animals would sell to J Fred Davis of Texas (JFD Farm) and the story of Marlu would come to an end. The farm would milk Holsteins for several years following until about 1977 when the main barn was ravaged by fire. Today, the farm property is now a community park and open space, but the name Marlu will forever be synonymous with shaping the breed and helping to build a foundation that helped jerseys transform from a wealthy man’s pretty hobby cow to the fastest growing dairy breed in the nation, as it is today.
