The Power of One!

ow’s everybody holding up out there? Hopefully, you’ve all found a bit of equilibrium in the midst of this upside-down year. Here at Cowsmo, we’ve been fortunate to be able to travel to several shows and sales the past couple of months, and through that, we’ve probably felt things were a bit more ‘normal’ than for many of you. But, at the time of this writing, it seems very strange not to be packing up the boxes for the trade show at Expo, or to be putting the finishing touches on our schedule for show coverage and manning the booth. We are, however, looking forward to the new fall shows at Stillwater, OK, Circleville, OH, and West Springfield, MA. ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’ as they say, and we’re excited about the opportunities presented by these new events, while also eagerly anticipating our return to World Dairy Expo and the Royal Winter Fair in 2021. You never know where one opportunity can be the spark to a bright, new future. It seems to be the inadvertent theme of this issue as we were putting it together.

That one purchase, that one embryo, that one job, that one mentor – the happening that lit a fire or made a dream possible for so many of us. Maybe it was buying a bred heifer or a little July calf; maybe it was the first job that crystallized your ambitions; maybe it was breeding that first Excellent cow or garnering that first All-American nomination.

Or possibly, it wasn’t even something that tangible. Maybe it was a few words of praise from someone in the business that you really respect; maybe it was seeing your picture online participating at big show; or maybe it was seeing your kid’s massive smile while hugging their first calf. We all have different triggers that motivate us in this business. And we need them. There can be some tough days when you own and love cattle; we need those positive cushions to see us through. We can all contribute to that positivity for someone else in our industry. It only takes a couple of seconds to compliment a 4-H kid or a junior member. Take a couple of minutes to chat with someone new at the show. That buyer who bought your sale consignment and whose name you don’t recognize? Give them a quick phone call and thank them. You probably won’t even remember the interaction, but what if you are the ‘spark’ for them? Wouldn’t that be cool? It only takes one to start that ripple effect – that good word, that pat on the back, that

thank you – and that’s what we need to keep this fabulous club of ours vital, relevant, and exciting for newcomers. Thank you as always to all our subscribers and all our advertisers! We’ve gingerly felt our way along with each issue this year, and we’re so appreciative for your continuing support! If you’re attending one of the remaining fall shows, be on the lookout for our Ringside 2020 publication. Normally, our Ringside advertising section appears in the show catalogs at World Dairy Expo, but this year, we developed a different outlet for those ads – promotion and marketing is still crucial even in a tumultuous year such as this! Be sure to look in this issue and in the Ringside for the 2020 All-American Contest rules and entry forms! We are presenting all four contests as usual – Open Holstein, Open Jersey, Junior Holstein, and Junior Jersey! You only need to have shown at a US show in 2020 and have a professional side shot photo from this 2020 show season – it will be an exciting year for nominations and results! As we continue along the crazy path that is 2020, we’re more appreciative than ever for the resiliency of the purebred dairy cattle business, and for those relentless optimists that share a good word and keep the bright lights shining! See you down the road – stay healthy – stay optimistic!

PANDA HOLSTEINS

Dreams turned to Reality

W

ith a passion fueled by endless dreams, Molly Westwood traveled halfway around the world to learn from “the West” and broaden her knowledge of the Registered Holstein breed in 2007. At only 16-years-old, the trip from northern UK to Alberta, Canada was long, but looking back 13 years later, it proved to be one of the best decisions that Molly ever made. Today, Molly has developed a world-recognized herd of Red and White cattle that any breeder would be proud of. Born and raised on a grade dairy farm that had been passed down for three generations, Molly learned about responsibility and hard work at a young age. She, along with her parents and four siblings, worked together to take care of their non-pedigree Holstein farm. “I always loved the cows,” remarked Molly, “and have many happy childhood memories of me helping dad scrape up after school from the age of 4 or 5.” Molly caught the “show bug” in 2004 and began working with a few calves. “I was lucky enough to have some help along the way from Chris Parry, our Semex rep at the time, who lent me a pair of second-hand clippers to clip my first calf for a show,” recalled Molly. “And today, I still use those same clippers!” From there, she had the opportunity to help out at some sales and shows and learned what was all involved in the show side of the dairy industry. Just as her passion and knowledge for the industry was expanding, her family unfortunately had no other choice than 10 « COWSMOPOLITAN Fall 2020

to sell the farm in 2007 while she was taking her final exams in school. She convinced her father to keep one cow from their herd, Honesberie Charles Gem VG-86 2Y, who her father had purchased as a Christmas present for Molly as a baby calf. Molly asked some local friends to house and care for the 9th generation VG/ EX cow, who would eventually become the foundation for her Panda herd.

Molly credits her life-changing experience to the Morsan owners and managers. “The Morsan team - the Thalen family and Chris Parry, the Pedigree/Marketing Manager and my boss - was the nicest people I could have worked for. I was given the opportunity to work with the best cows in the Holstein breed at the time, and I also learned many basic skills on the commercial side of the business too!”

After the herd was sold, Molly and her During her time at Morsan, Molly had family moved three hours south to be the chance to work with numerous closer to family. During this time, Molly outstanding individuals, but a highlight was missing working with cows and the of her final year goes back to the Royal opportunity to work for Morsan Farms Winter Fair in 2011 when Eastside arose. “Despite being 16-years-old, I Lewisdale Gold Missy EX-95-2E 30* and missed the cows within a month and knew Blondin Redman Seisme-Red EX-97-2E that they needed to be part of my future 3* were each named Grand Champion of and life going forward,” she recalled. “You their respective shows for Morsan. AB, to try and fill her desire to work with “There’s no place like home, and there’s cows every day. nothing better than breeding your own Molly planned on staying in Canada for cattle,” Molly stated. “I enjoyed my time one or two years, but quickly turned into in Canada, but you always put more into an almost four-year stint. “Working for something that you own and have bred.” one of the best pedigreed show herds With that thought in mind, Molly moved and commercial herds in the world was back to the UK in late 2011. Her parents the best experience I have had in my had planned on moving to a small holding life,” recounted Molly. “It shaped me from around the same time, so Molly took out a young 16-year-old girl to a 21-yeara loan and built a barn on that land and old young woman who knew what she started Panda Holsteins from scratch. wanted in life.”

“My business model was to develop and sell the best pedigreed Holsteins I could,” she recalled. “I was never interested in milking 100’s of cows. I love to develop and maximize the potential of individuals, something I had learned during my time in Canada.” Molly’s dream barn was completed in 2015, which houses about 30 animals. “I don’t sell milk, therefore any animal in milk has to have it’s rightful place,” remarked Molly. “Otherwise it’s sold.” There are usually three or four milking cows in the barn and currently Molly is housing several show cows for other breeders. She also has around 20 pedigreed young stock on-hand, with the majority getting sold before breeding age, and an additional 30 females for embryo recipients. For anyone that follows Panda Holsteins on social media, you’ve probably noticed a trend in Molly’s photos . . . Red & White Holsteins. Molly has always had an affinity for Red & White genetics over Black & White because they were just a bit different she said. “Somebody once said to me, ‘Red Holsteins are no good, they don’t give any milk and the are non-comparable to the Black & White’s,”’ she recalled. “Well, I love to prove people wrong!”

Over the last few years, Reds have increased in popularity around the world. “I feel this is because many R&W animals have been giving the B&Ws a run for their money at the shows and seem to be obtaining higher sale prices within elite pedigree sales,” Molly stated. “And I feel my first cow family I developed, Fools Gold, had a unique edge to the breed, using the best B&W genetics to still produce a Red animal.” With the development of that family, along with a few other prominent Red additions, 95% of the Panda herd are either Red or RC.

was the only Red & White Alexander son in the world. Additionally, three heifers were born from those embryos: Panda Lexander Fools Gold Red ET EX-93-2E, Panda Allyander Fools Gold ET EX-90 and Panda Alexa Fools Gold ET RC VG-88. From those three females, 23 animals have classified VG or Excellent under the Panda prefix. Undoubtedly Molly’s best brood cow to date has been Lexander Fools Gold Red. “Lexy” earned numerous show recognitions as a young cow including

While that stat alone is noteworthy, what’s even more impressive is that Molly has bred and developed 9 Excellent and 41 Very Good females under the Panda prefix that have been sold in the past eight years. Panda Herd Foundation Molly’s most valuable takeaway from Canada wasn’t necessarily a lesson learned, but a genetic acquisition. Molly purchased a flush of Alexander eggs from her favorite cow at the farm, Stoneden Fools Gold Red VG-88-3Y 9*. “That was my ‘piece of Morsan’ I wanted to take home, and those embryos in turn helped formed what I have built at Panda today,” according to Molly. Fools Gold was a Variant Red Goldwyn, and her mating to Alexander produced several Red offspring, including Panda Redfactor Red, which at the time of his AI release, Left: Panda Heart Of Gold Red VG-88 VG-88 is a daughter of Lexander Fools Gold Red and was R&W Champion at the UK Dairy Day in 2019. HM R&W Champion at UK Dairy Day in 2016 and is currently the highest classified VRC cow in the breed. As a brood cow, she already has eight Very Good daughters. One such daughter is Panda Heart Of Gold Red ET VG-88, sired by Brokaw, who was UK Dairy Day R&W Champion 2019 and All-Britain Intermediate Calf in 2016. Additionally, all five of her Emilio daughters have scored VG-86-2Y. Molly sold a Red Darlingo daughter of Lexy to a syndicate in Switzerland who is now fresh. Molly has high hopes of watching her compete at Swiss Expo in 2021 for her new owners. The current generation from this family has continued the winning ways. Exceptional Fools Gold Red is an August 2018 Emilio that was 1st and Reserve R&W Junior Champion at the UK Dairy Expo in 2020. Fresh this summer, Exceptional just classified VG-87 and was the former #25 R&W PTAT female in Europe in December 2019. Pure Gold Red is a 5/19 Crushabull daughter of Heart of Gold that was flushed recently and has been serviced for next year’s show season. While the Fools Gold maternal line has certainly been the most prolific for Molly, the Gem heifer that her father kept for her after the herd was sold left behind a lasting legacy as well. She had a heifer calf while Molly was in Canada, which she then

Breeding for the Future Although the Panda herd is not large, its genetic profile could be considered one of the most elite in the world. Each year, Molly aims to purchase 4-5 embryos from a specific up-and-coming female that she has followed. “I love following shows and sales, certain cows that catch my eye and AI companies along with watching the breeding patterns, pedigrees and sire stacks,” remarked Molly. “There are numerous tools out there to do the research, such as Facebook and websites, along with seeing the animals

Panda Glory Halleulah Red ET is potentially the World’s first 21st generation Excellent cow! at shows and sales. I spend a lot of time looking information up, and follow some animals for a few years before I purchase something from them.” Once Molly makes a purchase, she focuses on developing the individuals to the best of her ability. She also recognizes that you always need to have something fresh, new or unique if you’re looking to market your animals. But she also thinks it is extremely important to keep developing what you already have at the same time. The top cow at Panda today is Panda Autumn O Kalibra Red, an Awesome granddaughter of World Champion Decrausaz Iron OKalibra EX-97. Now in her second lactation, she recently maxed out at VG-89-3Y EX-MS. She was the winning R&W 2-Year-Old at the UK Dairy Expo in 2019, and Molly had high hopes for her at their National Show this year, but unfortunately all shows in the UK were canceled due to COVID-19. She was flushed once this summer to Ameretto Red with pregnancies coming, and is bred back for next year and UK Dairy Day in September ‘21. Molly hopes to breed her back quickly in 2021, with dreams to exhibit her as a Mature Cow at the European Championship in 2022. She has exciting daughters by Jordy, Dice, Attraction and Unstopabull. Panda Holsteins is also home to potentially the world’s first 21st generation Excellent, Panda Glory Halleulah Red ET. This January 2020 calf is an Unstopabull from Golden-Rose Ladd Glory Red ET VG-862Y who hails from the same family as Golden-Rose Barbritzi B-Red EX-90, who was the first 20th generation EX. “This is an extremely exciting calf for us here at Panda,” commented Molly. “She combines

a deep pedigree, balanced sire stack and is one of the best-looking heifers we have on the farm!” Molly plans on flushing her this winter and calve her in with high hopes as a 2-year-old. Molly also owns in partnership in the US Ms Goldenrose J Rita-Red-ET, a Jordy Red daughter from Golden-Rose Barbritzi B-Red, the World’s first 20th generation Excellent. “We decided to purchase her to cover all angles from this family - in case the dam of Glory Helleujah didn’t make EX or had an accident before being scored again - as I really want to make it another key cow family to develop here at Panda,” Molly commented. “We will be importing Rita’s eggs shortly to develop that line of the pedigree and also potentially breed the first 22nd Excellent in the Europe or the World!” Another unique pair at Panda is Panda Unique Cheerio Red ET and Panda Unique Cheerleader Red ET, the only Red Cheers descendants in the world! Their dam is Blondin Unstopabull Cheers who is fresh and entered in the Ontario Fall Invitational Show in October. Their next dam is Unique Dempsey Cheers EX-95. “For me purchasing embryos directly from Cheers was unfordable. So I looked at her offspring and Blondin Unstopabull Cheers was, for me, the spitting image of Cheers herself as a calf - balanced, black and silk y- not too big either. She was also a Red Carrier, which attracted me even more! I spoke with Dann Brady at Blondin and we mutually agreed on a sire to flush her too. Amaretto-Red was a bull I had been watching for sometime, as he has an incredible dam and is by Jordy Red. The mating was formed, and worked out really well for us! We plan to sell one of these Red Cheers this year and work with the other one!” Molly stated. Show style is not Molly’s only focus at Panda. Panda Tango Red combines a show winning pedigree with high Type. An

In order for that dream to become the daughters and offspring she has had a reality, she knows that she needs to keep to date,” remarked Molly. improving and pushing the boundaries For Molly, these few special individuals have made the last few years all worth it. “You don’t need a big pocket,” she said. “Do your research and you don’t have to spend a lot of money to breed something special. I always try to look for something I can develop and add value too rather than looking at something that is already at the top of its game! When I first started, I watched and followed several people I looked up to within the breed and I still do today. I think it is hugely important to keep to your ‘stamp of animal.’ I never buy or breed for fashion. You’ve got to follow your dreams, not those of others!”

even further, bettering herself and her cattle. “Having lost foundation cow last year and arguably my best brood cow, Lexander Fools Gold Red, I realized the lows can be big blows when you have a barn full of high value animals, especially when you are attached to them all,” Molly stated. “However, it’s important to pick yourself back up. When you get the good days, whether that’s a good flush, high classification, a top-sale price or show winner, you want to do more! It’s so important to have dreams and I will keep striving and working towards them.” By Julie Ashton

A YEAR WITHOUT EXPO S

ince the decision to cancel World Dairy Expo was made at the beginning of June, many of us have found ourselves wondering, “What do I do the first week of October?” While there is never a shortage of work to do on farms and students are busy with schoolwork, for 54 years, it’s become tradition to be in Madison for Expo that first week of October. And for once, that will not be the case. This summer, as friends proclaimed, “We need a show,” in reaction to the news, many of those involved with World Dairy Expo began recalling the early days of the show and the rallying cry that began the global tradition. We Need A Show In 1963, more than five decades after the National Dairy Cattle Congress began in Waterloo, Iowa, cattle exhibitors grew concerned about their future at the show. While it was once an exclusive dairy event featuring the best herds in the United States alongside displays of equipment, organizers added competitions for horses, poultry, waterfowl, and rabbits in 1949 which started the demise of the legendary dairy show. As the organizers of Cattle Congress floundered to find their footing in the more diversified space, the dairy exhibitors began looking to the future. Spurred on by Wisconsin dairyman, Allan Hetts, saying “we need a show,” dairy exhibitors started meeting and making plans for a future beyond Waterloo.

Left, Aerial view of World Dairy Expo grounds in 2019 versus right, 1976. They considered locations in St. Paul, MN, Springfield, IL, and Columbus, OH, but strong connections in Wisconsin and support from the state led the early organizers to Madison. The first of the Madison shows, held in 1967 and 1968, took place over 10 days and sported the name, World Food Exposition. According to Expo’s history book, We Need a Show, “The inaugural event boasted 10 World Food Forums, two World Youth Forums, World Home Economics Day, a Cinderella of the Dairy World, and the World Olympics of Dairy Cattle featuring the world’s largest dairy trophy.” There were banquets, dancing, nationally touring performers, dignitaries, and a modest trade show, but the show did not make any money. In 1969, a new name was given to the event, World Dairy Expo, and the show was shortened to five days. 1970 saw the move of major national events such as the intercollegiate and 4-H dairy cattle judging contests and the National 4-H Dairy Conference from their historic

Since the inception of World Dairy Expo, the dairy cattle show numbers have increased steadily. homes to Madison. These contests were also accompanied by the merge of the International Dairy Show with the fledgling organization. It was not until 1971 that organizers finally created the show we know today. In the spring of that year, dairy leaders from across the United States met to discuss the need for a major dairy trade show. This need in the industry helped Expo find the financial footing it lacked as companies bought shares in the organization and made plans to exhibit at the show that fall. The 5th annual show saw the introduction of farm management workshops, Expo’s Recognition Awards, an emerging interest in craft and food exhibits meant to attract dairy farm women, and the move of the National Dairy Shrine’s annual meeting and recognition banquet to Madison. The early organizers of World Dairy Expo certainly had their challenges as they worked to find the event’s role in the industry, but what saw them through

those first few years was a focus on Expo’s core mission: To serve as a forum for dairy producers, companies, organizations and other dairy enthusiasts to come together to compete and to exchange ideas, knowledge, technology, and commerce. Expo of Today This mission that saw Expo through its beginning is what continues to guide World Dairy Expo today. Expo’s education programs have grown from farm management workshops to Expo Seminars, Virtual Farm Tours, Dairy Forage Seminars, youth-specific programs and Knowledge Nook Sessions alongside additional industry-led meetings and learning opportunities. In total, attendees of World Dairy Expo can learn from more than 40 educational events during the five-day show. The Trade Show that began on the Coliseum floor in 1967 now spans the grounds and features more than 850 participating companies. Unique to World Dairy Expo, the Trade Show is the globe’s largest gathering of dairy-focused companies. Nowhere among the rows of interactive booths will attendees find a company that does not serve the dairy industry. While some youth contests moved to Expo in 1970 more have since joined the ranks. Today, the International Post-Secondary, National Intercollegiate and National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contests are held at World Dairy Expo on Monday morning. The Central National FFA contests are held across the grounds on Tuesday along with seminars and activities designed for FFA members. Meanwhile, Expo’s own Youth Showmanship Contest and Youth Fitting Contest have grown to include participants from around the globe.

From We Need A Show: “A group of breeders, business leaders, and government and university officials met to just three days before Christmas in 1965. That day, the organization [World Food and Agricultural Foundation] adopted this mission: • Promote international exhibitions and shows of agricultural commodities, dairy cattle, dairy products, and livestock • Promote within the state of Wisconsin a national dairy cattle show for exhibitors and owners without restrictions as to their residence and geographic origin of the dairy cattle • Promote dairy and general food shows, and • Do all things necessary to properly conduct and operate shows and exhibitions as provided for in these purposes.” Today, Expo’s mission statement continues to reflect the initial vision of its founders. World Dairy Expo serves as a forum for dairy producers, companies, organizations and other dairy enthusiasts to come together to compete, and to exchange ideas, knowledge, technology and commerce.

on the colored shavings. In 1967, 1,182 cattle walked through the Show ring: 465 Holsteins, 257 Milking Shorthorns, 168 Brown Swiss, 112 Jerseys, 91 Guernseys, and 89 Ayrshires. By 2019, that number had more than doubled to 2,331 animals housed in the New Holland Pavilions and Cattle Tent. A win on the colored shavings continues to be a driving force for dairy cattle breeders throughout North America. As a host of international shows, Expo provides the show ring credentials necessary for an All-American or All-Canadian nomination and potential win. Regardless of the reason someone comes to World Dairy Expo, the focus of the event remains evident. Expo continues to have its sights set on the mission of being a forum for dairy producers, companies, organizations and other dairy enthusiasts to come together to compete, and to exchange ideas, knowledge, technology and commerce.

And of course, today, World Dairy Expo continues to host its worldrenowned Dairy Cattle Show

What now? The cancellation of World Dairy Expo 2020 has ripple effects throughout the global dairy industry. Companies and dairy cattle breeders build their marketing plans around Expo. They rely on the event to launch new products, put their genetics to the test in the Show ring and make connections with buyers from around the world. Youth spend their summers preparing to compete at Expo and dairy producers see Expo as an opportunity to connect with their community and make new connections as well. Without Expo this year, these opportunities don’t exist in the same format that we have grown accustomed to, but Expo remains committed to supporting the global dairy industry and its exhibitors. Dairy producers can browse new products and technology available to the industry using Innovation Unveiled on Expo’s website or search for dairy show cattle genetics and services with Expo’s new Pavilion Promotions, also found at worlddairyexpo.com. There is a renewed drive to use social media to create a community of dairy producers around the globe and share educational opportunities. Meanwhile, Expo’s staff and Executive Committee continue to meet and determine ways to return in 2021 with a strengthened show that continues the mission and vision that Expo’s founders established decades ago.

The Trade Show at World Dairy Expo began in 1967 with just a few booths in the Coliseum and today, is the largest gathering of dairy-focused companies around the globe!

So while the global dairy community won’t be meeting in Madison this fall, World Dairy Expo is doing everything it can to ensure this is the only year we don’t all have plans to be together the first week of October. By Katie Schmitt COWSMOPOLITAN Fall 2020 » 17

T-TRIPLE-T DUNDEE Y

PAIGE

ou never know when that one modest purchase can be the one that puts your farm on the map. That’s the eternal thrill of buying cattle at auction for a purebred enthusiast, no matter the breed, no matter the herd. In 1992, John and Jay Thomas of North Lewisburg, OH, spent about $3,000 on a bred heifer at the Ohio Convention Sale, and little did they know how the descendants of that heifer would become known worldwide and put the spotlight on T-Triple-T breeding 15 years into the future.

That heifer was Hesters Mark Prudence. Out of a VG-87 EX MS Chairman, her next dam was an unscored Bootmaker, then followed by an EX-90 Chief, and a VG-89 Pride Admiral that had Gold Medal Dam status. Not necessarily an elite pedigree for that era, but one with a sire stack of some of the great bulls of the breed from the previous decades. That bred heifer would eventually score EX-95 4E and make over 300,000M of milk – one of the very few cows in the breed to ever accomplish that feat. Nathan Thomas and his cousins, Brandi & Jami, all showed Prudence when they were juniors, and she was the winning 125,000 Lb Cow at the 1996 Mid-East Spring National Show. As Nathan recalls, she followed a common pattern thrown by her sire. “She was a typical Walkway Chief Mark daughter: awesome udder, awesome frame, needed improvement in her feet & legs.” She was not successful as a flush cow, but did have three natural daughters – an EX-93 Stardust, a VG-87 Stardust, and an EX-91 Linjet who is key to the future of the cow family. T-Triple-T Linjet Phoebe EX-91 EX-MS 2E calved five times in her life and only had one heifer calf, in June of 2005. That calf, T-Triple-T Dundee Paige, would be the gamechanger for the Thomases, and

mature into an EX-96 3E cow and a threetime All-American nominee.

You may not have envisioned that seeing her in her youngstock days. “As a heifer, you would have said she was too strong and a little heavy,” Nathan remembers. But he admired her depth and correctness and thought she would be a good cross for a Canadian bull getting good reviews in the show ring – Braedale Goldwyn. Even then, Goldwyn semen was expensive, but Nathan saved up to buy four units at $125 each and used one of those precious units on Paige as a heifer. “My uncle thought I was nuts to use such a high-priced bull on a heifer, but it turned out OK,” he laughs. ‘Turned out OK’ is one of the all-time understatements as that resulting heifer calf born close to Christmas in 2007 would be the homebred that kicked off a decade of Paige descendants bringing rosettes and banners back to the farm in Ohio. Unlike her mother, T-Triple-T Gold Prize had immediate appeal as a show heifer, and by the time she took the ring as a winter yearling in 2009, there wasn’t anything that was going to stand in her way. She was named Junior Champion at both the International Holstein Show and the Royal Winter Fair on her path to All-

American and All-Canadian titles. By that time, the crew at Triple-T were known as a pretty good hotel for show cattle. They already had plenty of success purchasing and developing winners in the ring, but Paige and Gold Prize really announced their entry onto the stage as breeders of that ‘big-time’ kind as well. In all, Paige produced 18 classified daughters resulting in 12 EX, 4 VG & 2 GP. The Excellent daughters average 93 points, with five at EX-94 & EX-95. Nathan may not have known that Dundee x Goldwyn would be one of the magic crosses in the breed when he used that first unit of semen, but it certainly worked that way in the Paige family. Six of those EX daughters are Goldwyns, including the two scored EX-95: T-Triple-T Platinum-ET and T-Triple-T Petunia-ET, both nominated All-American. Platinum was named the Holstein USA Cow of the Year in 2019 and was the Nasco Type & Production Award winner at World Dairy Expo last year. They had shown Paige a couple of times as a junior 3-year-old, but she was a

5-year-old before she became a serious contender. Her stablemate in OH at the time was Ms Exels Dundee Beauty, and their careers mirrored each other for a few years, even to the point of both scoring EX-95 on the same day. The two Dundee daughters landed at or near the top of the class at some of the biggest shows. Beauty was Grand and Paige was Reserve Grand Champion at the Mid-East Spring National Show in 2011 and at Madison, Beauty won the Aged Cow class, while Paige was 4th that day.

Paige’s All-American nomination that year was the incentive to flush her again. They had done her a couple of times to Goldwyn earlier after Gold Prize was Junior Champion, but now that she was six, it was time to get some more offspring. The timing was perfect as next year at Madison, Gold Prize returned as a 4-year-old, won her class, and was named the All-American 4-Year-Old of 2012. She was nominated again in 2013, the same year that her full sister, Platinum was 8th senior 2-year-old and Paige herself stood 3rd in the Lifetime Production cow class. Additionally, that year, the Triple-T Senior Best Three Females and Produce of Dam groups both stood 2nd, comprised entirely of Paige daughters.

Jenny Thomas explains, “Those are mostly from partnership-owned family members (like Platinum who is owned with Aaron Eaton and Brad Murphy). We like to keep those partnerships pretty clean. We want the partners to have some success and to have some financial return.”

they all have that Paige family look. We rely on that when we plan our matings. It’s tough selecting a bull right now in the Holstein breed to use on them. We do watch the pin setting on the family. Their pins are level, but we guard against the pins getting high.”

They lost Paige in 2015, and so are still selective about which ones to sell and which ones to keep to ensure there are future prize winners at Triple-T. “We flush, but we’re a smaller farm, so we don’t have a ton of recipients at hand, so it can get expensive. We make some heifers to market. We try to sell the prettier calves in the spring – the ones that have appeal to the show crowd. We keep the ones that maybe are a little too strong or not as rangy – a lot of them turn into really good cows down the line. As cows, they really reach their peak when they’re four, five-, or six-year-olds. They’re bred to make good old cows – I don’t think there’s been a 2-year-old out of family ever get nominated”, elaborates Nathan.

That family stamp makes it hard to pick out any particular sire that is mating better with the family right now. “We’ve got a Doorman spring yearling out of an EX-91 Gold Chip, who is out of Platinum that I like a lot, and I think will do well this fall. We like the Diamondbacks and Awesome calves, and we think Unix has worked well in the family, as the Paiges have that extra bit of width and strength. We’ve got King Docs coming, and I’m interested to see what they’re like when they hit the ground,” says Nathan. Both

With those results, it was an opportune time do some marketing, and in 2014, they hosted the first ‘Best of Triple-T & Heath’ Sale with long-time friend and partner, Michael Heath. In that sale, they put some Paige family members on the block for the first time, and six Paige daughters averaged $18,000 – a great indication that people had been paying attention to this developing family. “We were doing some building on the farm and growing the operation. If we couldn’t write a check for it, we didn’t buy it, so the Paige family helped us do some things on the farm and get some breathing room financially,” notes Nathan.

Both Nathan and Jenny agree about the family pattern. “The family has a lot of consistency – square, balanced, they can be immature as young cows, but we like that. They grow and mature the way we like - a little on the slower side. They’re all very aggressive, very alpha personalities in the herd, but they’re good to work with. They can be a little strong-willed, but we like that in a cow as it seems that personality helps them last,” notes Jenny. Nathan continues, “They’re really wide, open, with great udders, and really good feet & legs. The family really stamps them – we’ve used a lot of different bulls, but

That sale has now become a sale series, with Holsteins the featured breed every other year. It’s still the primary place where they merchandise family members, but will put a select few consignments in other high-profile sales.

Ms Triple-T On The Prowl-ET, Nominated All-Canadian Summer Yearling 2019

Jenny and Nathan mention that it’s been a challenge to find a bull without close up Dundee or Goldwyn blood to use on the family. Jenny liked the Avalanche daughters out of EX-95 Platinum – one was Junior Champion at the 2019 MidEast Summer National Show, and another – Ms Triple-T On The Prowl-ET – who was Lot #1 in last year’s Best of Triple-T & Heath Sale, was nominated All-Canadian Summer Yearling in 2019 for Ferme Glauser and Ferme Yvon Sicard. A third sister makes her home in Australia owned by Cherrylock Cattle Co. and Murray & Jane Polson.

popular in certain international markets – namely Europe, Australia and Japan. Jenny explains, “We can’t keep up with the embryo requests from Europe and abroad. It’s really nice to have that demand, but we also don’t want to overwork the cows. We like to show, and we need to get them bred back after a time. We want to do what’s right for the cows and not get greedy about it.”

and Reserve All-American are highlights for Nathan. “At the Ohio Summer Show one year, we had the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place Produce of Dam groups – that was pretty cool”, he mentions.

T-Triple-T-I Durham Poppi EX-95, the Durham daughter out of Gold Prize, has been nominated All-American three times and is producing some notable daughters. She already has an EX-91 Doorman, an EX Sid, and five daughters by Doorman and Gold Chip that are all VG 2-year-olds, up to 87 points. “It’s been interesting to see who’s going to be the next really top brood cow from the family. We’ve worked some members that we’ve shown, but there are a couple that weren’t high-end show cows that are making really nice daughters,” says Jenny. With it’s combination of proven show sire stack, high classification scores, and high components, the family is extremely

The Paiges haven given the Thomas family a wagon load of good experiences and good memories. Altogether the family has racked up close to 30 All-American and All-Canadian nominations to date. “We’re a really small operation compared to someone like Ferme Jacobs – who are friends of ours, and who we respect so greatly for all they’ve accomplished. We only milk 30 cows and almost half of those right now are Jerseys, so we’re grateful that this family has allowed us to compete in that same ballpark. One year, we had two Produce of Dam groups – one was All-American and one was Reserve All-American – the Paige family has made that possible for us,” smiles Jenny. Gold Prize being Junior Champion at Madison; having Best Three and Produce groups place be named All-American

It all traces back to really believing in one special individual. “We had Paige at the NY Spring Show as a junior 3-year-old. She wasn’t there to win – she was too immature. Kelly Barbee asked a price on her for somebody. We told them $30,000 and they offered $25,000. I don’t know why we didn’t take it – we could have used the money, and we usually do take the money! All I knew was that she was the best thing we had ever bred to that time, and we decided to hang on to her. That turned out to be a pretty smart decision for us and our farm”, confirms Nathan. Whether it’s the purchase of a nice bred heifer at State Convention, using that expensive unit of semen, or choosing to hold on to a good one – listen to your gut; it just might be the game changing decision! By Kathleen O’Keefe

Paige’s legacy will forever be present and remembered at Triple-T Holsteins after her statue was installed in 2020. 22 « COWSMOPOLITAN Fall 2020

THROUGH THE LENS WITH ELLA WRIGHT

We’ve been tossing around the idea of this series since seeing a wonderful cover photo on an old issue of the Holstein Journal last fall. We’ve asked industry photographers to choose their favorite scenic or cover photograph that they’ve ever taken, and to tell us a bit of the story behind the picture. Our dairy photographers are immensely talented creators, and we’re delighted that the first in the series is from Ella Wright, a former co-owner of Cowsmopolitan and proud resident of western Canada – a location that often figures prominently in her work!

“I was working with Patty Jones / Canadian Livestock Photography at the time, and I was tasked with making some images that would be used for the National Convention that was to be held in Calgary in 1999. John Iversen and I went west of Olds, Alberta scouting for possible locations. We actually scouted all over our county looking for a good mountain view. We ended up about 30 minutes west of Sundre, Alberta, where we found a meadow with the Rocky Mountains as the backdrop. We didn’t know if it was crown land or if someone owned it. There were a couple of horses behind a fence there, so we left a note hoping the owners might respond, but we never heard anything back. I clipped the two cows the night before at John’s farm in Olds. John washed them

that morning and we loaded up the cows, brushes, clippers, feed, water, and a generator in the trailer and headed west. Once we arrived, I touched up the clip job in the bright light of day, and cleaned them up again from the trailer ride. The icing on the cake was that it had rained overnight, and there was a brand new puddle in the field. Not only did we get the mountains in the background, but we also got a reflection of the cows and the mountains in the foreground. That was back in the pre-digital era, and I was still shooting on film with my Hasselblad camera. In those days, you didn’t really know what you had until the prints got back from the CLPI office, but I was really happy to see that we had created an image that captured the majesty of Alberta and western Canada!

BUILT FROM THE GROUND UP T

Corstar Farm

ucked at the end of a nearly mile long driveway in Litchfield, Minnesota is the All-American recognized Corstar Farm. Cory and Kristen Salzl, along with their two-year old son, Joe, milk 25 cows, mainly Milking Shorthorns, with a few Ayrshires and Guernseys sprinkled in the herd. Corstar Farm began in 2002, before they had met, when Cory bought his first registered dairy animal, a Red & White Holstein. Prior to that, Cory grew up on a grade Holstein farm and didn’t show through 4-H, but was a member of his local FFA chapter, where he got a start in dairy judging. Through FFA and learning alongside his family’s Select Sires breeder when he visited the farm, Cory’s interest was sparked in dairy cattle genetics. In 2005, Cory exhibited his first animal at World Dairy Expo, a Red & White Fall Calf who placed last in her class. This experience ignited a fire within him. Kristen grew up with Registered Guernseys and grade Holsteins. The

granddaughter of Klussendorf winner Neill Heitke, showing has been in her blood since birth. She first showed at World Dairy Expo in 5th grade and has shown at Madison nearly every year since. Today, Cory and Kristen both work off the farm, Cory as a Dairy Inspector for the State of Minnesota and Kristen as the Program Coordinator for Minnesota Dairy Initiative. It seems only fitting that the couple first hit it off when Cory hired Kristen to be his fitter at World Dairy Expo in 2009, the first year he took his own string to Madison. Since then, Cory and Kristen have exhibited a string at World Dairy Expo every year. To date, they have earned 34 All-American Nominations in the Milking Shorthorn and Guernsey breeds. 11 AllAmericans, 10 Expo class winners and four Minnesota State Fair Grand Champions have called Corstar home. The first Milking Shorthorn that Cory bought came from a City Slickers Fall for Colors Sale. He was interested in getting into a breed other than Red and Whites, so he went to the sale looking for a calf to buy of a different breed. Russ Thyen pointed him in the direction of a little July-born Milking Shorthorn calf, North Stars Mandy-ET. After having a heifer calf, she scored GP-83 as a two-year old. In her second lactation, Mandy calved again with a heifer named Corstar Liriano Maize EXP. Maize, scored 2E-90, was 3x Nominated All-American and was named HM All-American as a summer yearling, 2-year old, and a Left, Corstar Liriano Maize EXP, and right Corstar Lovely Lady EXP ET EX-94. Kristen, Joseph & Cory Salzl with Corstar Lovely Lady EXP ET EX-94. Photo © Rachel Coyne. 4-year old. Kristen and Cory reminisced about Maize’s colored shavings run as a 4-year old when they realized they never milked out her fore quarters the night before the show. “She looked awesome! She placed third that day despite her fore quarters never getting milked out,” stated Kristen. Maize is now 11-years-old and is joined in the herd by her Innisfail Perfection EXP daughter scored EX-92. From that same lineage comes Corstar Deuce Mix P EXP TW 2E-90. Mix was Junior Champion at the Minnesota State Fair as a Spring Yearling and took a little time to develop as a cow. As a Junior 3-year old, Mix earned All-American honors in 2016 and won the Milking Shorthorn Futurity at World Dairy Expo. After being named All-American, Mix was injured and has now calved back in for a second time after her injury. She flushed well in that time off

and is now really coming back on with the potential to one day show again. The ‘L’ family at Corstar traces back to Nixs MA Love 2E-91. Cory purchased Love at the Minnesota State Milking Shorthorn Sale. Her dam, Nixs Lilly Pad EX-93, had just been named Grand Champion at the Minnesota State Fair and was Grand at Madison just weeks after Cory bought Love. In 2010, Love became a fourth generation All-American when she won as a 2-year-old at World Dairy Expo. North Stars Mega Peanut EXP ET EX-92 was purchased as an embryo and turned out to be an exciting cow throughout her entire life. She was a fun, modern cow and won the Futurity at World Dairy Expo. Along with being named Reserve All-American as a Junior 3-Year-Old, Peanut was named All-American as a Junior 2-Year-Old and Spring calf, and was Reserve All-American as a Spring Yearling. Unfortunately, Peanut never had a natural heifer and only had one ET heifer; all other calves were bulls. A cow that has written her own story in Milking Shorthorn history books is Corstar Lovely Lady EXP ET EX-94. In 2017 and 2019, Lovely Lady topped the Milking Shorthorn production records for the year with a best record of 34,070M 3.3% 1127F 2.9% 977P at 4-06 in 305-days. Lovely Lady is a fifth generation Excellent and All-American in milking form. To Cory and Kristen, Lovely Lady’s most notable accolade came as a complete surprise. In 2014, Lovely Lady was a Senior 2-year-old and won her class at Madison. Her herdmate, Peanut, showed as a Junior 3-year-old the same day. For many, including Cory and Kristen, Peanut was their best cow that year. While Lovely Lady winning her class was exciting, everyone was waiting to see Peanut in her class. Ultimately, Judge Michael Heath placed Peanut second in class to the Intermediate Champion cow from Harrisburg. Cory and Kristen were pleased with this result and assumed Judge Heath would name his winning Junior 3-year-old as Intermediate Champion, and hoped for Reserve with Peanut. Much to their surprise, Judge Heath walked past the pair of Junior 3-year-olds and instead selected his winning Senior 2-year-old, Lovely Lady, as Intermediate Champion, with Peanut named HM Intermediate Champion! Lovely Lady’s day in the sun wasn’t over yet, as she went on

to be named Reserve Grand Champion at the end of the show. Prior to her big win on the colored shavings in 2014, Lovely Lady was third Winter Calf at World Dairy Expo and was nominated All-American as a Winter Yearling. Lovely Lady was again nominated All-American in 2015 and 2016 and was dry during her 5-year-old show season. She returned to the “big dance” in 2018, winning the Lifetime All-American Senior Best Three Females for Corstar at the 2014 International Merit Cow class and named Milking Shorthorn Show. daughter, and her Jekyll granddaughter. HM Senior Champion. Taking a break from the show circuit, Lovely Lady At Corstar, Cory and Kristen want to build has focused on production, with 120 strong cow families, and their breeding lbs. milk last test and will go on a flush philosophy is simple: “Show ring ready is program this fall. our number one goal, but they need to While 2014 was certainly a special year for Corstar and the ‘M’ and ‘L’ families, 2018 proved just as memorable. Mix’s daughter, Corstar Presto Mango P EXP EX-90, the reigning All-American Junior 2-Year-Old, won the Junior 3-Year-Old class while Corstar Presto LuLu ET EX-92 placed second in that same class. Shortly after, Mango and LuLu were named Intermediate and Reserve Intermediate Champion, respectively. Later that day came Lovely Lady’s Lifetime Merit Cow class win and recognition as the Nasco International Type & Production winner and Corstar ended the day winning Senior Best Three Females. Corstar Presto LuLu ET EX-92 is out of a sister to Lovely Lady. Currently, four generations of that branch of the ‘L’ family are living on the farm right now: LuLu, her Very Good Disney dam, her EX-90 Justice

milk well in order to do well in the show ring,” said Cory. They like to use traits such as A2A2 and Polled genetics as tools in their breeding program, but they don’t rule bulls out in the absence of traits like these. Kristen and Cory like to keep cow families around and progressing, so bulls need to have a good pedigree, not just females. If a heifer has a hole in her pedigree, she will likely be used as a recipient and will get another chance to be bred herself once she calves in. Since Cory’s first purchase of a Milking Shorthorn, the Salzls have kept the breed around because they work well for the program they run now. Milking Shorthorns are excellent grazers and don’t require special rations and extras. This is especially beneficial for Cory and Kristen, who own 30 acres of land, 25 acres of which is pasture. They purchase

time to build a barn. While in Louisville for NAILE, Cory’s brother sent him a link to the listing for their current farm site. They purchased the farm and first worked on the house, then started building Kristen and Cory with Mango P and Lulu, the winning pair of Junior 3-Year-Olds and Intermediate and a heifer shed, built the barn, Reserve Intermediate Champions of the 2018 International Milking Shorthorn Show. and finally finished the heifer shed. and yearling and because of Kristen’s background, Guernseys have always held a special place in their hearts and they are excited to rebuild their herd. The new calves are special. When Cory went looking for Guernsey genetics to incorporate into their herd, he purchased from the Tambourine family from Knapps, Jazzy family at Springhill, and the final calf is related to the popular bull, Latimer. In addition to the Guernseys, Cory and Kristen own a few Ayrshires, including an EX-93 cow. When they needed some more cows in the barn, they purchased her from a large farm in New Mexico. She has continued to develop extremely well for the Salzls and has two daughters on the farm as well. From standing on the bottom of the class at Madison, to exhibiting 34 All-American nominations in just 11 years, Cory and Kristen Salzl are a wonderful success story and a great reminder that determination and building strong cow families can lead to greatness on the colored shavings.! WALNUTLAWN MCCUTCHEN SUMMER

A COW FOR ALL SEASONS!

B

ad deals never stop losing and good deals keep on paying – it’s a pithy statement, but often rings true in the dairy cattle business. Good cows can make good deals, and great cows make money for everyone involved. One case in point is the recent example of Walnutlawn McCutchen Summer EX94-2E-CAN (EX-96-MS). Bred in Tavistock, Ontario by the late Bernie Zehr and his son, Adam, in their Master Breeder herd, Summer has a laundry list of accomplishments to her credit. Perhaps the most remarkable occurred at the Ontario Summer Invitational Show in August where she won the Mature Cow class on the same day her son, Walnutlawn Sidekick, was named Premier Sire of the Heifer Show. It’s a pretty rare achievement for a bull mother to win a class at the same show that her son has two class winners and brings home a Premier Sire banner. And, Summer’s brother, Walnutlawn Solomon, sired another two class winners at the show. We had the chance to visit with the principal people involved in Summer’s career and gathered some of their thoughts on working with this impressive cow.

genomic era. At the time, I was pretty down on genomics, but this family made me a believer,” says Adam Zehr. “Summer was Sue’s first daughter born here at Walnutlawn, and we thought she was special. When we got the genomics back, and we knew she was really special!” Born in February of 2013, Summer topped the Heifer Confirmation list later that year. “She was really a fancy calf. We had a lot of visitors at Royal time that year that wanted to see the #1 type heifer,” Adam recalls. “We flushed her as soon as we could, sold some eggs and put in a few embryos. Then, like a lot of the McCutchens, she went through an ugly duckling stage as a yearling, and I wondered if we had made a mistake!” Summer calved in at the age of 1-10 in December 2014, and the Zehrs were ecstatic with how she looked. “We thought she had a big future, and I guess that’s what happened,” Adam laughs. Fresh with her second calf in May 2016, Summer really blossomed. The Zehrs took her to their Oxford County show in September, and that’s where David Dyment enters the picture.

“I’m always looking for that cow that can cross category lines – the show cow “I can’t say enough about the family – we with the modern sire stack or the bull know it as the Sue family (Summer’s dam). mother that can show – and I always We bought Lavanguard Sue privately as a want a full, full pedigree with a powerful 2-year-old right at the beginning of the maternal line,” notes David. “I knew about the cow, but I hadn’t been to see her once she calved a second time though a couple people mentioned her to me. Joe Russwurm, in particular, said ‘This is the kind you like to buy.’ I always try to get to the Oxford County show, and that day I walked in the barn and the first cow I saw was Summer. I didn’t know it was her, but walked right over Summer, the #1 Conformation heifer in late 2013, attracted many visitors and sold embryos to check her sign to see who this cow was. I told already at a young age. 50 « COWSMOPOLITAN Fall 2020

Adam that I didn’t care how she did at the show that day – I wanted to buy her.” David, along with Michael Heath and Sebastien Dion, had been looking for a new cow to invest in, with the goal of making marketable females and putting a couple of bulls into stud. “She gave me that feeling in my gut that she was something special,” remembers David. “It was also special that she traced back to the Glen Drummond Shower/Flower line. My family bred that cow family for generations and it gives you added confidence when you know a cow family so well.” Adam Zehr also remembers that Oxford show, where Summer was 3rd in the senior 3-year-old class. “Dave wrote a big check for her – the biggest we had ever cashed for a cow. I said as much to him, and he said ‘I think she’s worth it and more.’ We still have six Summer daughters here on the farm and the oldest is pregnant with her 5th calf, and we’re milking granddaughters and greatgranddaughters. It was hard to let her go, but we did have a lot of her genetics on hand and had sold some of her sons to AI, so the timing was right.” The Dyment, Heath & Dion partnership established the Avant-Garde prefix for their genetic group, and got right to work building on Summer’s pedigree. They sent her to be housed in the US for the balance of the 2016 show season, and she made her mark winning the Senior 3-Year-Old class at the Northeast Fall National Show and capturing the Reserve Intermediate Champion title. She stood 7th at the International Holstein Show in Madison and 6th at the Royal Winter Fair on her way to gathering both AllAmerican and All-Canadian nominations that year. After the show season, the partnership flushed her regularly to make both males and females to market. “She was never a prolific flush cow in individual sessions. She would only make about 3 or 4 eggs a flush, but those eggs would almost

When the dust settled at the sale closing, Richard Denier had placed the final bid of $22,000 CDN and was Summer’s new owner as of August 6th. Richard was making arrangements to have her sent to Budjon Farms in Wisconsin, when Tom Cull mentioned the upcoming show in Ontario to Richard and thought it might be a good idea to show her Avant-Garde Kashmir Soul-ET VG-87 88-MS is just one of the 13 Very Good first lactation before she got on the truck to the US. “David daughters that Summer has so far. Photo © Sheila Sundborg. said she was entered in always become pregnancies, so she was the show, and said he thought she could very consistent in that regard,” comments do exceptionally well, so we decided to David Dyment. The Avant Garde group go ahead, ” comments Richard. “I didn’t sold a number of heifers in live sales, and buy her as a show cow, so the fact that she also sold some sons to AI, including Avantwon and that her son won that Premier Garde Unix Select (by Unix), Avant-Garde Sire banner really was gravy!” Subban (by Crush), and Avant-Garde KD Summerfest (by King Doc). With 14 of 16 classified daughters to date It was always the business plan of the partnership to disperse all of the stock within a certain time frame, and that time came in early August in the Avant Garde Online Summer Sale. Summer and her remaining offspring held by the group were all offered up for sale. That caught the eye of Richard Denier of Denier Genetics in California. Over the past few years, he has been purchasing some of the breed’s notable brood cows, and Summer looked like she could find a spot in his stable. “A good friend of mine who is quite a Holstein enthusiast, Tony Cabral, saw the sale advertised. He said ‘I know you bought Imelda (Doorman’s dam), but there’s another one out there that you should take a look at’ – meaning Summer,” Richard recalls. “I want to try to accumulate some of the iconic brood cows of the breed, and she fits the bill. I’m only interested in the very best cow families, and I think Summer is one of the two or three most influential cows right now. I had never met David Dyment, but I called him up and he struck me as a straight shooter. He described the cow very honestly and told me his thoughts about how they had worked with her in the past.”

scored Very Good or Excellent, Summer recently added another star to her brood cow star total. At only 7-years-old, Summer is now a 7* brood cow, and with numerous heifers yet to calve, she will undoubtedly add to that total. Great cows keep rewarding everyone that has helped them along the way. David Dyment elaborates, “The cow family was never really bred to be a ‘show’ family, especially back when we had them at

Glen Drummond. It just goes to show how dominant these powerful maternal lines can be – they can excel in so many ways. Standing with Summer out in the Senior Champion lineup – she was pulled out in the final four along with a cow sired by her brother, Solomon - and then her son is announced as the Premier Sire of the Heifer Show, it was just a remarkable feeling.” Adam Zehr encapsulates the possibilities when one gets involved with a prolific cow family. “I told my wife the other day that I’m living out my dream. My dream was always to breed a Premier Sire at Expo or the Royal. I don’t know if Solomon could do that one day, but Sidekick winning that banner gave me a good taste of that dream! I’m very proud of what that family has done here at Walnutlawn, and I’m so thankful and grateful to all the breeders who used the genetics from Sue and Summer.” And he also tosses out a reminder that we all need to hear in this business occasionally. “An interesting thing about the Summer story is that we only flushed Sue once to McCutchen. She was an excellent flush cow and made over 10 embryos almost every time, but with the flush to McCutchen, she only made five embryos - four #1s and one #3. I was really disappointed! We sold the four #1 embryos to Australia (where they resulted in two bull calves), and we implanted the #3 embryo – which became Summer. So don’t give up on a below average result – IT ONLY TAKES ONE!”

Summer was the winning Mature Cow at the 2020 Summer Invititional in Ontario on the same day her son, Sidekick, was named the Premier Sire of the Heifer Show. Photo © Carl Saucier. COWSMOPOLITAN Fall 2020 » 51

GONE GLOBAL

A WORLDWIDE JERSEY EVENT! W

e’ve all witnessed the affect COVID-19 has had on our industry in 2020, and we’ve all seen how people have adjusted and improvised to overcome the difficulties of selling cattle this year. Often it meant scaling back or changing venues or postponing sales. One of those affected sales was the Avonlea Summer Splash V, the next in a sale series managed by Andrew and Jennifer Vander Meulen of Brighton, Ontario. The July 18th sale date had been announced in late December for the event to be held at their farm, home to the Avonlea Jersey herd. Jennifer Vander Meulen remembers those confusing early days of the pandemic in March and April. “It was in early April and we were still doing selections for that sale when Ontario started shutting down due to COVID-19. We were one of the first sales to pull the plug. We depend on our American friends to make our sales go, and if the border closed, we couldn’t have made the sale work financially. We made an early decision so that our consignors could make another plan for their cattle if they needed to.” But then, what to do? The milking herd at Avonlea numbers only about 40, so genetic sales make up a huge component of how the farm functions financially. How were they going to make up the income generated from sales of cattle and embryos? Jen credits her husband for the initial idea. “It was Andrew’s idea - 100% - to try an online sale. I admit I was skeptical. We had a family meeting and he convinced us that this was the thing to do. I’ve got a scrap of paper stapled to a file folder with the sale name on it that we brainstormed that night!” The decision was made for the Gone Global online sale event to happen over two days on August 28th & 29th, 2020. 56 « COWSMOPOLITAN Fall 2020

The next question was ‘How do we do this?’ To have an entire sale online was brand new territory for the Vander Meulens, but they were willing to absorb any new ideas and inspiration on how to make this not just an online sale, but something really special. “Andrew is addicted to cattle sales – he watches a lot of sales online, even beef sales. After thinking about our options and what we wanted for the sale image, our first phone call was to Nick Sarbacker of CattleClub.com. We had really liked what he did with the Future Ready Online On Time sale for Fraeland and the Avant Garde Group in early May,” explains Jen. The more they tossed around ideas, the more they wanted the sale to reach beyond the borders of North America. “We sell embryos, Andrew judges, foreign visitors stop at the farm – we have great relationships with people around the world. We wanted to see if we could give those people a chance to market some genetics. It got to be a snowball rolling downhill with people that wanted to participate and the amazing consignments we were offered,” says Jen. Nick Sarbacker of CattleClub.com relates on the process of formulating the sale structure. “When Jen & Andrew approached us about having a global jersey event, we simply said, ‘Anything is possible online!’ Four months later, we sold 84 elite jersey lots in six different currencies totaling $568,932 (CAD$) for an average of $6,773. We wondered if a sale of this size would be able to create enough interest in each and every lot, but we were overwhelmed with web traffic from 55 countries around the world. 4,682 users spectated or bid on the Jersey lots in the Gone Global online auction. 4,129 bids were placed from Jersey breeders in

19 different countries and webpage views totalled 103,970 during the week of the online auction.” Jen explains a bit more about the different currencies. “Animals sold in the currency of the country they resided in. That helped potential buyers from their home countries feel more comfortable. We have bank accounts in Canada, the US, and Australia so were able to handle the money there. In other countries, the buyers paid the consignors directly, and we billed the consignors for the commission. It all worked well, but communication is the key to something as unconventional as that with a sale.” They didn’t take any shortcuts from a regular live sale. They had a full, very attractive catalog produced that went online early in August, and each individual lot had a page on CattleClub. com filled with photos, videos, and pedigree information. A full sale staff was put into place with sale contacts located in Canada, the US, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Germany, and Italy. A sale with this worldwide reach is a massive undertaking, with some potential hiccups. What would they have done differently or what did they learn? Jen readily admits there was a learning curve. “There were a few things to improve. Everyone thinks their internet is perfect, but connectivity really varies in different locations. It takes more time for some bids to get through than others. Photo and video quality matter A LOT in the final outcome for an individual consignment.

breed ambassadors and we think this sale opened eyes around the world to the potential with the Jersey breed,” says Jen.

Nick Sarbacker agrees with Jen’s assessment. “Online auctions are more similar to live auctions than you may think - breeders that put in more time and effort properly planning and promoting their cattle are more successful. Inviting prospective buyers in to view sale animals is important, along with good photos and video of cattle selling in their natural environment. Bidders are more likely to participate if they have had time to review photos, video, pedigree, genetic value, and their budget well in advance of sale week.”

The Vander Meulens are synonymous with Jerseys, and they enjoyed the opportunity to promote the varied Jersey genetics found worldwide. “We feel that the more people we can get to meet the Jersey cow, the better! We love being

The family relished the experience and will have another online sale event in the future. But they also love the camaraderie and excitement that is generated by a live sale as well. “We definitely will be having another Splash sale, and it will be a live sale here at the farm. Our kids are a big part of our operation, and they really want to host a live sale again. Maybe in 2022 – that will be our 25th wedding anniversary as well – a good time and a good reason for a celebration!” By Kathleen O’Keefe

With all that said, would the Vander Meulens do it again? “Yes – 100% - we would do it again. We were blown away by how well it was received. It exceeded every expectation that we had for it!”, enthuses Jen. “We very much have a mantra: Build it and they will come. We’ve said that about the Summer Splash sale series, and now we see it again with Gone Global. It was fulfilling to help our COWSMOPOLITAN Fall 2020 » 57

R ANDOM LUCK

Breeding for t he Banner!

I

t’s hard to pin Rick ‘RT’ Thompson down on a lot of stats concerning his herd. He says he’d have to look up exactly how many Excellent cows or check the test sheet for the rolling herd average of his Brown Swiss, Jersey, and Holstein herd. But the one number he can fire right off is how many Premier Breeder banners the Random Luck show string has captured at various shows over the years – a number that currently stands at 47! That count is a pretty good indicator of RT’s priorities with the herd, and of his goals in the show ring. Good cows that stand near the top of their class earn the most points in the banner race, and that sums up the ideal of the Random Luck breeding program – to make good cows with the longevity and type to turn into high-scoring, profitable older cows that can still take a spin wearing a show halter. And to emphasize the point, those banners were claimed at some of the best shows in the country – twice Premier Breeder at the International Brown Swiss Show in Madison, twice at the NAILE

Brown Swiss Show in Louisville, once at the Southwest Regional Brown Swiss Show in Stillwater, and many, many times at the Wisconsin State Brown Swiss Show and the Wisconsin State Fair. The Jersey herd has claimed a fair number of Premier Breeder banners at Wisconsin Jersey shows as well. Located in Darlington, WI in the southwestern corner of the Badger State, the Random Luck herd is home to a number of those high-scoring older girls. Three of those cows won the Senior Best Three class at World Dairy Expo in 2019 on their way to being named Unanimous AllAmerican Senior Best Three and thus let RT “accomplish a thing that’s been on my bucket list.” Heading up that group is Random Luck B Tea Rose ‘2E-95’, a Bonanza daughter that was also the Reserve All-American Aged Cow in 2019, placing 2nd at Madison to the eventual Supreme Champion, Delilah. She was also the Reserve All-American Aged Cow in 2017, and the Reserve AllAmerican 5-Year-Old in 2016, so she’s

logged plenty of miles in the ring. Tea Rose has a top record at 6-02 2x 365d 25,662 4.7% 1215 3.4p 863, and has had those high components throughout her lifetime production. She also was named the Wisconsin Brown Swiss Cow of the Year for 2020, and was to receive the award in front of the Expo crowd and Brown Swiss World Conference attendees before COVID-19 put an end to those plans. Tea Rose is out of an ‘2E-91’ show-winning Premium daughter, Random Luck Twinkle OCS, that was Grand Champion at the WI State Fair and WI State Show in 2010. Her next dam is Sun-Made Jetway Taps ‘2E-92’, the first Brown Swiss that RT ever purchased back in 1998. Behind Taps is Superior brood cow Sun-Made Blend Trisha ‘2E-91’, and then the extraordinary brood cow, Morts Matt Tammy ‘3E-90’. Not surprisingly from this powerful maternal line, Jetway Taps became the foundation of RT’s Brown Swiss herd. Through her 16 Excellent daughters, she accounts for the ‘T’ family at the farm that has produced numerous Excellents and garnered many, many All-American honors.

Random Luck’s winning Senior Best Three Females and eventual All-American group from 2019. LtoR: Random Luck L Talula ‘3E94’, Random Luck V Precious ‘3E-94’ and Random Luck B Tea B Tea Rose ‘2E-95.’ Photo © Cowsmo. 66 « COWSMOPOLITAN Fall 2020

The second member of that AA Best Three Females is from the same ‘T’ family – Random Luck L Talula ‘3E-94’, who is a Legacy daughter out of a ‘2E-94’ full sister to the dam of Tea Rose, so the two cows are closely related. Talulah made 32,840 4.8% 1584 3.5p 1144 in 365 days as at 4-02, and also has a long list of AllAmerican titles to her credit. She was the Reserve All-American Component Merit Cow in both 2017 & 2019, and has also been nominated All-American four other times as an individual. She claimed some extra hardware at World Dairy Expo in 2019 as she was the Total Performance Winner, the Nasco Type & Production Award winner, and also Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show. Her Premium dam was nominated All-American five times, and was the Reserve All-American Component Merit Cow in 2015. Random Luck V Precious, a ‘3E-94’ Vision daughter, is the final member of that winning group, and hails from the other prominent Brown Swiss family at the farm. Her dam, Random Luck KB Phoebe ‘2E-93’ is, like Taps, sired by Jetway, and was the first animal born on the farm in Darlington. She was the HM All-American Senior 3-Year-Old in 2006, and traces back into a Kies Haven pedigree that had a number of show winners in the 1990s. Precious has been a long-time campaigner for RT and partners Brian Voegeli & Dan Reider, starting out her career as the All-American Summer Yearling in 2009, and followed with a Reserve All-American Junior 3-Year-Old title in 2011. She’s been an anchor to the numerous Best Three Female and Produce of Dam groups that have tallied a pile of All-American nominations in the

past decade. After graduating from UW-Platteville in 1991, RT earned a living by fitting full-time, first at the Great Northern clipping for their many sales, and then spent three Matthew and Rick “RT” Thompson, left, accepting the 2020 Wisconsin Cow of the Year award for years with the Random Luck B Tea Rose, who, right, was the 1st Junior in the Aged Cow class at WDE ‘18. powerful Holstein show herd campaigned by Pinehurst and 20% Holsteins. The Jerseys have some Farms. In that time, he gained two lifetime things to brag about too, as out of the first mentors in David Bachmann, Sr. and Terry 100 Jerseys bred at Random Luck, over 50 Lee. “I really came to respect David’s were scored Excellent and 25% were EXphilosophy of buying into superior cow 92 or better including three at EX-95%! families and then continuing to develop RT married Lisa Caya in 1993 and she the pedigrees from there. He always brought along her love for the little wanted to come home with the Premier brown cow. She had worked for Barlass Breeder & Exhibitor banners, and I guess Jerseys and the foundation of the Jersey that left a mark on me,” notes RT. “Terry herd at Random Luck comes from that taught me to stay focused on the big famous fellow Wisconsin herd. Random Luck T Heather EX-95%, owned by Red Dirt Genetics and On The Go Farm, OK. was HM Senior Champion at the 2020 Southern National Jersey show. Heather EX-95% has earned numerous banners herself, including Grand Champion at the Kentucky State Fair, Reserve Grand Champion twice at the Southern National Show. Most recently, she was HM Senior Champion at the 2020 Southern National held in September. Her herdmate at Red Dirt Genetics in Oklahoma, Random Luck Surprise Me EX-91% was the winning 5-year-old and Reserve Grand Champion at that same show. All in all, Brown Swiss and Jerseys carrying the Random Luck prefix have garnered over 100 All-American nominations over the past 20 years. Contrary to what you might think, RT hasn’t flushed anything for over two years. “We built up the herd and now it seems we want a daughter out of almost everything, not just the old cows”, RT explains. With that many mature cows in the barn though, it does mean there are surplus cattle to sell. There’s always lots of junior interest in Brown Swiss calves, so he breeds some to have show heifers to sell, while also always trying to breed for cows for himself. The COVID-19 pandemic dismantled a number of consignment sales this spring, so he had to come up with a way to sell the heifers he had consigned to those sales. He ended up running a sale on Facebook that offered the buyer the option of 10% down and the balance due when the buyer picked up the heifer for a show ($3.00 a day boarding after sale day) or they could pay for and pick up the heifer immediately. The sale successfully 68 « COWSMOPOLITAN Fall 2020

sold 15 calves for him, and he plans on doing one again in 2021. The key to a successful online sale, he thinks, is the proper pricing. “Price them accordingly for where people want to show and they will sell. You can’t price them all the same if one wants a county fair heifer and one wants a National show level heifer,” notes RT. “I do think more and more business will be done in these online sales in the future.” With all the drawbacks of a pandemic year, the Random Luck show string is planning to stay home from the tanbark this fall. RT’s son Matthew, 16, is a sophomore at Darlington High School and was able to get to a few junior shows this summer. Daughter Allison, 18, is a freshman at Carroll College studying applied physics and playing on the women’s basketball team. RT mentions that one silver lining of the COVID-19 upheaval was having Matthew around for some extra help. “He’s really good with the equipment, can feed and run the skid steer. We only own 40 acres to raise corn sileage and have some pasture, so we buy all of our hay. But now that he can run equipment, we could think about buying some more land to do some our own hay,” comments RT. “I always thought the farm was the best place to raise kids, and they both seem to have enjoyed it along with showing cattle.” Keeping kids involved with show cattle is a key to keeping the purebred business viable and vibrant according to RT. “We both sell and lease calves – I think we leased out eight or nine heifers this year. We need to think about making room

for these one-day junior jackpot shows that the other species have. They’re fun, exciting, and they keep the kids coming back every year to buy a new show heifer!” RT does his share to keep the shows active in Wisconsin. He’s been an enthusiastic exhibitor at the Wisconsin State Fair stretching back to the time when Pinehurst tied their impressive string right inside the main door, and he’s kept going back almost every year since. That dedication was acknowledged in 2019 when he was the Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Barn Hall of Fame Inductee. He also serves as an at-large Brown Swiss breed representative on the World Dairy Expo Dairy Cattle Exhibitor Committee. He doesn’t take a lot of time away from the farm, but enjoys getting out to do some judging assignments. He was the official judge at the Illinois State Brown Swiss Show in August, and last year placed the cattle at the Western National Show. He really enjoys the interactions with other breeders, and would like to continue judging a couple shows a year. Random Luck’s absence from the tanbark trail means that RT won’t be adding to his banner total this year, but he’s looking forward to 2021. “Everything is bred for next year, and I think we’ll have a good lineup of cows to get out then,” he says hopefully. It’ll be a good sign that things are back to normal when you once again hear Random Luck announced as the winner of a Premier Breeder banner! By Kathleen O’Keefe

MILKING SHORTHORN SETS PRODUCTION RECORD The Milking Shorthorn breed is currently experiencing increased interest in the province of Quebec, and one of those Quebecois cows has just set a new breed record for single lactation protein production! Serol Dutch Abrielle VG-88 recently completed her third lactation, producing 545 kg of protein in 305 days. She also produced an outstanding 15,652 kg of milk (third highest total all-time) and 781 kg fat (second highest total all-time) in the same lactation! Abrielle is owned by Ferme Britannia S.E.N.C. of St-Valerien-de-Milton, Quebec. She was purchased in 2016 as a two year old heifer in the herd dispersal of the Serol herd of Roxton Falls, Quebec. Ferme Britannia is owned and operated 70 « COWSMOPOLITAN Fall 2020

by Dominique Petit & Linda Provost and their son Yan-Éric Petit and his wife MarieEve Maher. Abrielle is the first Milking Shorthorn to be added to their mixed herd primarily composed of award-winning Canadienne cattle. Yan-Éric remarks that Abrielle has fit in very well in their herd. “She is a moderate size, has been very productive with high components, and bred back easily in third lactation despite milking so heavily. She is now fresh again in her fourth lactation.” Abrielle is sired by the American bull Sunshine Moneys Dutch. Her Very Good 86 point dam by Blissful Diamond Sam was also a high component producer for Serge Girard and Carole Beauregard of Ferme Serol. The maternal grand-dam, Quality Ina VG-87, was also a consistent producer

and was Honourable Mention Grand Champion at the National Show in 2008. Congratulations to Ferme Britannia on their success with Abrielle. She is a tremendous example of the production potential of modern Canadian Milking Shorthorns!

ABIQUA ACRES

MANN’S GUERNSEY DAIRY T

here’s plenty to love about dairying in the western foothills of the Cascade Mountains: the ability to pasture from March to November, the local consumer base, the natural beauty. But there’s one thing that is much less desirable – the annual wildfire season. As we all know from watching the news over the past weeks, the Western United States has experienced a record wildfire season. Over five million acres have burned so far in California, Washington, and Oregon, and many of those fires are still burning. Abiqua Acres, located in Silverton, Oregon on the edge of the Willamette Valley, survived a close-up experience with this fierce fire season. The operation, consisting of nearly 100 acres, is home to a 100% registered Guernsey herd owned by Alan & Barbara Mann and Ben & Darleen Sichley. Registered Guernseys have been grazing the farm’s pastures since 1952, when Alan’s parents, Paul & Delores Mann, purchased their first. Descendants of that original cow – 18 generations later - still make up part of the 95-cow herd today. Always a family-run operation, Alan & Barbara purchased the farm in 1985, and their daughter Darleen and her husband Ben joined as partners in 2008. The two couples along with Ben and Darleen’s sons, Mason (9), Nolan (6), Clinton (2) make up the labor force on the farm, with an additional Sichley on the way this fall! They utilize their acreage mainly for rotational grazing for the herd, and

purchase corn sileage locally and alfalfa hay from eastern Oregon. A number of years ago, the family realized their old, original parlor needed replacement, and so they had to make a decision. Building a new, bigger parlor meant having to hire employees, which was something they were reluctant to do having always been a family-run, family-labor farm. So they studied the possibility of moving to a robotic milking situation. “It took a long time to research. We looked at a lot of facilities in the US and Canada, but that was a big part of our success when we built the new barn and transitioned the herd,” notes Darleen. The new milking facility was completed in 2017 and houses the herd and two DeLaval VMS units in a free flow barn. Darleen elaborates on the change and transition in the operation, “Our current RHA is 16,330M 763F and 570P. We’ve seen a dip in the RHA and it reflects moving into our new facility. Not that the transition hasn’t gone well - we are happy with our daily averages 2.7 milking and 52lbs. Our new facility with capacity for 120 cows allows us to hold onto all of our young cows, including those that we probably would have culled in the past for production. We are basically only culling right now for breeding or major production issues. As a closed herd looking to grow naturally, or if milk prices will ever improve, to allow us to purchase in some embryos. It also reflects the learning curve with robotics and how

Abiqua Acres Presige Jesusita EX-92 exemplified Abiqua Acres’ breeding goals, producing over 180,000M and living to be 17-years-old. nutritional changes play a bigger part as we transition again from cannery waste corn silage to field corn. But we are very happy with our decision to go robotic!” The family has always emphasized breeding a commercially productive registered herd with moderate-sized cows that breed back and last. Abiqua Acres Presige Jesusita EX-92 had lifetime totals of 186,363M 8,263F and 6,604P over 10 lactations. She exemplified the goals of their breeding program. She stayed in the herd until she was 17, and was a real herd favorite. Her son, Abiqua Acres Levi’s Jaeger, is in AI at Select Sires and will see his first daughters calve in this fall. Abiqua Acres Goliath Velma EX-90 was another favorite who stayed in the herd until she was 16-years-old. She had multiple sons in AI, Banger Verdict and Alstar VIP, and she stood second on the national Guernsey living lifetime list for several years, as well as being the top NM$ cow, with a lifetime totals of 234,933M 12,064F and 7,868P. Another cow family that has been influential is the ‘S’ family. One of Alan’s first purchases in 1967 from Frances Hertel was a calf named Vanher Banker Snooks. There have been 171 direct female descendants with no ETs. The ‘S’ family has accounted for over 20 cows that have surpassed 100,000 lbs of milk, totaling 6,408,681 lbs of milk over the

74 « COWSMOPOLITAN Fall 2020

lifetime of this family. Notable individuals include siblings from Abiqua Acres Lords Sprinkles VG-86: a son at Genex, Abiqua Acres Grumpy Sergeant, and his sister Abiqua Acres Faros Speranza VG-89, who produced over 130,000M lifetime. Her son Abiqua Acres Geo Sputnik was also placed in AI. They’ve currently scaled back their efforts in the show ring with Ben & Darleen having young kids at home, but always enjoyed exhibiting at the Oregon State Fair in nearby Salem, and at the Western National Guernsey Show in Puyallup, WA. Abiqua Acres Aaron’s Meara EX-93 put together an impressive show ring record and was a three-time Grand Champion at the Oregon State Fair. The family has always dedicated time to breed organizations. Alan Mann just finished serving eight years on the American Guernsey Association Board of Directors this past summer. Darleen has a real social media presence and a large public outreach effort for the farm. “I love interacting with the public especially through farm tours. I never seem to turn down a group, but especially enjoy the “Adopt a Farmer” program which focuses on middle school age kids. This past school year and this year will be different with social distancing needs. But I’ve been having fun jumping into virtual tours. In addition, being active and present in social media is so very important,” she explains. Known on Instagram and Facebook as @ guernseydairymama, she also contributes regularly to Hoard’s Dairyman. But it was through her social media channels that most people saw the shocking images of orange skies and air thick with smoke taken from the dairy in September. The fire began as a lightning strike and as it grew in size, it was named the Beachie Creek fire. “When it began, the Beachie Creek fire was 60 miles away from our farm,” says Darleen. “But on September 7, a hard wind blew from the east, which never happens here. The Beachie Creek fire joined up with two other fires and moved 50 miles westward in one day.” The dairy was suddenly placed under Level 3 evacuation orders, which means immediate evacuation. “We were allowed to stay at the farm to care for the cattle. The new facility is all steel and concrete, and had a cleared area around it, so we took our chances. The youngstock were in older wooden buildings, so that was

To view some dramatic photos and video footage of the farm with the fire threatening nearby, visit: www.instagram.com/guernseydairymama/ www.facebook.com/AbiquaAcres

The Beachie Creek fire moved within 4 miles of the farm, making the air quality extremely poor. The smoke was thick and heavy for both the cows and people, but luckily the herd seemed to be little affected at the time. a bit more risk, but we had a plan to get them and the nursery calves in trailers to evacuate,” Darleen recounts. “My husband and my father are both volunteer firefighters, so they kept a close eye on the situation. The fire was finally stopped when it was just 4 miles from our farm.” Once the fire was no longer the immediate threat, the smoke became the larger obstacle. “The air quality was just terrible – the worst in the country - but the cows hardly missed a beat. We were without electricity for about a week. On the second day without electricity, one of our backup generators failed. We lost a few hours’ worth of milking, but other than that the cows have been doing fine. Nothing much has changed for the cows other than we haven’t been able to turn them out onto the pasture due to fire safety concerns,” notes Darleen. Abiqua Acres purchases nearly all of the feed inputs for its herd. On most days, the milking cows are let out onto a pasture located near the dairy barn to graze and exercise. “We had been feeding cannery waste silage to the cows, but we recently switched back to corn silage,” Sichley said. “There is some concern regarding how this year’s corn silage will taste and how much ash it might contain. We buy our alfalfa from a grower located on the eastern side of the state. His area hasn’t been affected

by the smoke, so there shouldn’t be any problems with the alfalfa.” The Beachie Creek fire has burned more than 192,000 acres so far, and is still not fully contained. Darleen says a number of things combined for a worst-case scenario to occur. “We had such a hot, dry summer. We don’t get the frequency of summer rains that we used to. I think climate change has had some effect, and there have been some outdated forest management practices that contributed to it all,” comments Darleen. A two-inch rainfall on September 18th finally helped ease the immediate crisis in Silverton, and firefighters had a chance to gain some control over the fire. It will be long road to recovery for the area and the rest of Oregon, but Darleen is thankful for how her local area stuck together. “We are feeling very lucky that we didn’t suffer any property damage. Some families have literally lost everything,” she said. “We may have had some difficulties, but the power of the community of helpers is greater than the fear and is the brightest light of hope.” The family is ready to regain some amount of normalcy and get back to focusing on their herd. Darleen asserts, “We really do enjoy the cow side of this crazy life! Going through the last few tough years of low prices and now the wildfire, the love of the Guernsey cow is what has kept us going.” By Kathleen O’Keefe COWSMOPOLITAN Fall 2020 » 75

CLYDE HILL HOLSTEINS A lesson in Line Breeding

et along a hillside in the northwest corner of Clyde, Missouri is the Benedictine Convent of Perpetual Adoration. The convent was founded in December 1875 by three Sisters from Switzerland. They established a humble convent which grew into a thriving congregation of 260 nuns. The property eventually included a group of well-developed and solidly constructed farm buildings and the Adoration Chapel, which is a gem of architectural beauty. The Sisters followed a wellbalanced program of prayer and work. Since March 28, 1878, they prayed for the needs of all mankind, without interruption, continually both day and night, at the Motherhouse of Clyde. They also operated a printing press and printed a magazine and several devotional booklets, constructed linens, and made Communion wafers. The farm connected with the Clyde convent provided all the milk, butter, pork, beef, eggs, and vegetables for the institution, which fed between 250-300 persons daily, including employees and visitors. The dairy farm purchased its first purebred Holsteins in 1918. The Sisters found the need for experienced help and Joseph Gemmeke of West Germany moved to the United States in

1923. Joe was a hard worker and by 1930 he became the herd manager. Joe had the “Masters Touch” as far as breeding purebred Holsteins and a few prominent Missouri agriculturists admired the size, production and conformation of the herd. They persuaded Joe and the humble Sisters to enroll the herd in the Holstein Association’s Herd Improvement Registry (production testing) and type classification programs. It was through these programs that the herd gained national attention. The “Clyde Hill “ prefix was first used in 1938 and continued until the herd was sold privately in 1963. Dairy cattle breeders have always promoted the importance of cow families. In 1932, and influential Holstein was born at Clyde Hill. Zuba Amarilla King De Kol EX-92 GMD was known as the “Queen Mother of Clyde Hill” because of her ability to transmit type, production and longevity. Zuba was the third generation born at Clyde Hill and was the result of a linebreeding program centered around the bull King Pietertje Ormsby Piebe (KPOP). She lived to be nearly 17-yearsold and had a lifetime production of 225,232 lbs. milk and 7,317 lbs. fat. This record does not include her first 2 lactations when the herd was not on DHIA test. During her

fourth lactation she jumped a barbwire fence and lacerated her udder. The Sisters decided that she needed to be slaughtered, but herd manager Joe Gemmeke decided to dry her up and keep her at Clyde Hill. It was a wise decision as she would calve nine more times and made many outstanding records. Zuba was the dam of 13 offspring, three daughters and ten sons. Ten of the offspring were sired by the great herd sire Rock River Hengerveld Al EX-GM, who was purchased in Illinois in 1932. Zuba was the first cow to score EX for the herd and she had four EX offspring. Her first daughter was Elsie Zuba Rock River EX-92 GMD with a lifetime production of 160,743M and 5,805F. Elsie’s influence would come through her Sir Bess Ormsby Tidy Fobes son, Clyde Hill Elsie Tidy Lad VG-GM. His daughter, Clyde Hill May Belle Tidy Lad VG, was the dam of Raven Burke Elsie EX-91 GMD, the Elmer Dawdy cow in Kansas who had three influential

sons: Ideal Burke Elsie Leader EX-GM, Raven Burke Ideal EX-GM, and Ormsby Burke Pontiac Mose EX-GM. Zuba’s second daughter was Fanny Zuba Rock River EX-92 with a lifetime production of 257,841M and 9,039F. v produced eight daughters, six of them classified Very Good. Her Sir Bess Ormsby Tidy Fobes daughter Clyde Hill Queen Fanny Tidy VG would complete the breed’s first 3-generation group of Excellents with over 200,000 lbs. of milk. “Old Zuba” would then have 8 bulls in a row until 1945 when her third daughter Clyde Hill Rosetta Zuba Rock VG-86 was born. Further study of the pedigrees of the Clyde Hill herd showed as many as 7-generations of cattle descending from “Old Zuba” in the years prior to selling the herd in 1963. At the start of World War II, three of the Clyde Hill employees who milked the cows by hand had to leave for the army on short notice. It was noted that several of the Sisters took over the 3X per day milking and did a fine job, which lead to annual increases in production. Eventually a milking machine was installed. Heading the contingent of quiet, careful workers was Sister M. Liguori who handled the registrations, knew every animal in the herd, its ancestry and life history. Sister Josephine was in charge of the farming operations for over 25 years and was credited with building up the fertility of the land and pastures, the erection and

maintenance of an impressive collection of farm buildings, and the establishment and development of outstanding herds of registered Holsteins and Aberdeen Angus. The beef herd was added to provide meat for the institution as demand for Holstein breeding bulls increased. The Clyde Hill herd was the subject of many articles in the Holstein-Friesian World and individuals from the herd appeared on the cover four times. Clyde Hill was also a regular advertiser. The herd developed many outstanding individuals by linebreeding to the Rock bull and “Old Zuba”. This concentration of Rock and Zuba shows the pedigrees of most of the animals in the herd with 3 crosses to Rock and 3 crosses to Zuba, others with 2 to Zuba and 4 to Rock. These matings produced offspring that were in demand around the United States. Eight cows in the herd produced over 200,000 lbs. of milk in a lifetime. The herd received the Progressive Breeders Award 19 times. It is interesting to note that Rock River Hengerveld Al EX-GM was developed at Clyde Hill and another eight Gold Medal sires were bred there. Round Oak Rag Apple Elevation EX-96-GM, Paclamar Bootmaker EX-94-GM, Robthom Integrity EX-96-GM, To-Mar Blackstar EX-93-GM can all trace their pedigrees back to one or more Clyde Hill individuals.

Rock River Hengerveld Al was the chief carrier of mulefoot or syndactylism in the Holstein breed, a genetic recessive characterized by the fusion or nondivision of the hoof. He appears in the pedigree of Raven Burke Elsie EX-91 GMD whose sons, Raven Burke Ideal and Ideal Burke Elsie Leader, were mulefoot carriers. In the late 1970s Wayne Spring Fond Apollo was identified as a mulefoot carrier. His maternal grandam was a Raven Burke Ideal daughter. At the time, Wayne was the highest PDM bull and also had a high type proof. It was decided to leave him in service and to test his sons for this gene before placing them in A.I. Roland Ramsey wrote in the HolsteinFriesian World of the Clyde Hill herd, “We wish to pay tribute to Joe Gemmeke and the people who work with this great herd. When you visit Clyde Hill, watch them milk and care for their cattle, you cannot help but realize what a great part love, tender care and good ‘cow sense’ has played in the development of this herd—and what a great part it could play in your own herd. No one knows how many ‘Rocks’ or ‘Zubas’ have passed by unnoticed, undeveloped and undiscovered in our various herds due to lack of applying just a part of the understanding care that those at Clyde Hill give their cattle.” By Doug Urban
