While there are many enduring events in our business that I treasure, the repetitive feast or famine cycle of US milk prices is one we could all do without. Only a year ago, we were walking in clover with the milk price and the industry was ringing with the positive attitude that comes with a good milk check. It seems the ‘up’ days never last as long as the ‘down’ days, and boy, that gets old.
Let me state right now that I don’t have the answer to creating a sustainable, profitable milk price for dairy producers across this country. I wish I did. I know it’s a complex problem created over decades of ‘cheap food’ policy, regional pricing battles, labor shortages, processor price collusion, etc. I don’t have a lot of faith in the upcoming 2024 Farm Bill to solve it.
When I started my dairy media career with the Holstein World in 2007, times were golden. The milk price was good, pedigreed cattle were selling really well, and the World employed a full staff for the print magazine and the burgeoning online segment of the business. Then came 2009, when the milk price hit a 30-year low. It was a bloodbath - so many good dairy producers went out of business in that 2009-2010 cycle.
The World went from very fat monthly issues to very lean ones, and I’ll never forget what Joel Hastings (publisher of the World and my boss) said: ‘We all live off of that milk check.’ Even though many of the World’s customers then (and ours today) derive a good deal of their income from genetic sales, most still make their primary living from milking cows, so those of us in allied industry feel the economic ups and downs of that right along with you.
It’s so frustrating. I truly feel that our advertising clients, subscribers, and online audience are the best in the world at what they do - producing a high-quality, highlybeneficial product for a global market that wants more protein. Why is it so hard for so many dairy producers to make a good living doing that?
This whole rumination got me remembering a TV ad done about ten years ago featuring a family dairy farm in Wisconsin - a wonderful operation with registered Holsteins. It was very well done, and was intended to build a connection between the consumer and the producer. Towards the end of the spot, the farmer said ‘I won’t die a rich man, but I’ll die a happy man.’ That sentiment rang true with the tone of the ad, which was about the rewarding lifestyle of a family farm, in spite of the heavy labor and long days.
But that’s always stuck with me. Why shouldn’t we expect to die rich? Or at least well-off? We’re the BEST in the world at what we do! In every other industry, that expertise is rewarded and rewarded well. We think nothing of it when jet plane manufacturers or high-end clothing designers or condominium developers benefit financially from creating the
finest possible product. Someone starts a trucking business and becomes a mulitmillionaire…great! Why does it feel like we, as dairy producers, are always standing with our hats in hand, hoping the sun shines on us for a little while.
Maybe when we have our voice heard by policymakers and media, it needs to be less about getting just enough to live a meager but happy lifestyle, and more about being compensated fairly and/or amply for the life-enriching, safe, nutritious product we bring to market every single day of the year. That’s the end of my rant - I, once again, hope we can stand together as an industry and find some way to stabilize prices. Our friends in Canada seem to be less buffeted by price cycles, though I know there are pros and cons to the quota system. As I write this, milk price futures are moving up, so our urgent voice will again grow quieter, but my heart hurts for those that had to disperse their herds this summer.
In spite of it all, I’m still a true blue optimist. Though this Summer issue is thinner than in the past, we’re looking toward brighter days as we head down the road to the fall show season. We have some exciting developments on the horizon here at Cowsmo, and we look forward to sharing some of our future plans very soon! We’re grateful for all of you - our advertisers, our subscribers, our online audience - and we’ll see you at ringside!.

Holstein roots run deep for Jeff & Lisa Gibson, owners of KY-Bluegrass Genetics in Eminence, Kentucky. Both are natives of Kentucky and both grew up on Holstein operations in the state, but if you take a walk through the KY-Blue barn today, you’ll see plenty of color in the herd - something from every breed, in fact!
Both Jeff and Lisa were active as junior members in the Kentucky Holstein Cattle Club and the Holstein Association. Both were National Distinguished Junior Member finalist winners, and Lisa, then Lisa Hasfurder, was a member of the 1981 Dairy Bowl Champion team. They were also enthusiastic participants in the show ring. Jeff grew up on his family’s Briar Hill Farm, known for exhibiting big, deepbodied Holsteins with lots of width and strength, while Lisa came from more of a commercial operation. “Out of 50 cows, we probably had five Very Goods. I always joke that I could never beat Jeff in the show ring, so I had to marry him!”, laughs Lisa. After high school, Jeff continued on at the Briar Hill home farm. Lisa, five years younger, went on to the University of Kentucky where she obtained a degree
in agriculture production. They married in October 1996, and wanted to establish a herd together. They found a run-down farm two miles from where they lived - a real fixer upper. “We started with nothing,” remembers Lisa. “Visitors to our place in those early years were underwhelmed, but we kept putting our sweat equity and extra dollars back into it.”
Their opportunity to start getting ahead came in 1998 when Kentucky hosted the National Holstein Convention. They sold a Belllwood daughter that was the Convention Sale topper at $40,000. She had already sold a $20,000 bull calf to Japan, so with those proceeds, they built a tie-stall barn, a heifer shed and a tractor.
Today, the KY-Bluegrass operation consists of 76 acres and a herd of about 70 total head of cows and heifers housed in an L-shaped barn with 10 box stalls and 30 large free-stalls. Cow comfort is a top priority, and rubber mats are installed throughout the barn. Jeff & Lisa do 99% of ‘everything, everywhere’. The facility is built so that one person alone can move cows, which was useful during the
15 years Lisa worked for Monsanto and Elanco, as well as being a partner on the farm.
The Gibsons have always enjoyed the marketing and merchandising segment of the business, and held several editions of the ‘Run for the Roses’ sale series in 1996, 1997, 1998 1999, 2000, and 2012. “We had some good help at the time, so we could get away to travel and select cattle for the sales. We always tried to pick animals that we would like to buy ourselves, so I think that gave our sale lineups consistency,” says Lisa. “From those sales, we were able to get into prominent families like the Ashlyns and the Adeens, which turned out really well for us. We bred some highscoring cattle and All-Americans from those sale purchases.” For many years, they were also very active in the Kentucky National Sale series that is held each year in April. Their most recent sale ring undertaking was co-chairing the recent 2023 National Holstein Convention Sale held in Lexington, KY, which grossed over $1 million and averaged $10,627.
They’ve also sold animals privately out of the barn, though it can be a hard decision
to sell those animals from the top of the herd. One of their all-time favorites, KYBlue Ruben Marla-Red EX-94, sold to Richard Green in September 2007. She would be the All-American R&W Senior 3-Year-Old that year and in 2009 was the Grand Champion of the International Red & White Show. “Marla really put our prefix out there. It was tough selling her, but we still had her mother and her sisters, so it made the most sense at the time and Richard was the perfect buyer for her,” remembers Lisa.
Along with daughter, Katie, showing cows became a whole family affair. Katie had a prominent career as a junior showman with 30 Junior All-American nominations - 29 of those being cows. She had Grand Champion of the WDE Junior Show and Grand National Junior Show in Louisville twice - in 2008 and 2010 - with Logsdons Durham Cher EX-95. It’s because of Katie that the first ‘color’ came to the farm as she wanted a Jersey calf. That Jersey trail led them to Gillers Georgina EX-93%, bred by fellow Kentuckian Mike Rider. Georgina was the All-American Senior 2-Year-Old in 2008, and the All-American Senior 3-Year-Old in 2009, the same year she was Intermediate Champion at the International Jersey Show in Madison.
Their show circuit usually follows the route of the Kentucky National event in April of each year, Kentucky State breed shows, Kentucky State Fair (where they have had Grand Champion in every breed except Red & White), World Dairy Expo, and wraps up at the breed shows at NAILE in Louisville each November. They’ve always shown cattle from their own herd, but over the past few years have developed a significant boarding
business that has attracted clients and partners representing all the dairy breeds. “It’s really opened more doors for us,” notes Lisa. “We board very few Holsteins. We’ve learned so much and met so many people from the other breeds - it’s really been fun.” Since 2009, they have bred, developed or sold an All-American or Reserve All-American in every breed. Several of their partners are people who used to farm themselves, then went on to other careers, but still love for seeing their good cows in the show ring. “Paul Nicley milked Guernseys in the 1990s before he started building houses, and now has a few select cows including Heritage Brook LB Trillium VG-89, All-American Junior 2-Year-Old 2022, who is owned with Jeff and Lisa. We’re fortunate to have had some good friends as partners and clients,” says Lisa. “We’re a competitive bunch all the way around. The partners are always trying to beat each other, good naturedly - no matter where in the class they are standing.’
It’s also been a challenge for the Gibsons to learn the cow families, pedigrees and sires from all the breeds. “It’s a lot of work to do the research on the bloodlines,” admits Lisa. “We all discuss matings and other matters in the partnerships, but they mostly leave the final decisions to us, and we strive to breed an All-American with every mating. They also like us to do the legwork to find their next high-level purchase, which we enjoy. Even if we can’t get to all the sales ourselves, we have people we trust to eyeball individuals and give us good advice on the ‘right’ ones.”
In spite of their roots, black & white Holsteins make up a very small part of their herd today. “Honestly, we’ve been
very disappointed in the selection of bulls offered in the Holstein breed the last number of years. It seems like they’ve taken away all of the power, width, and strength that used to be a hallmark of the breed - especially in the front end,” states Lisa. They’ve always had some Red & Whites, and those make up most of the Holstein population on the farm right now, though Jeff and Lisa are finding it harder to find outcross, high-type red & white sires to use going forward.
When asked what breed she’s come to appreciate that may have surprised her, Lisa is quick to tag the Ayrshires in the herd. “They’re low maintenance, no nonsense cattle. They’re not bullies, but they also won’t be bullied. They just go about their business.” She admires the hardiness of the Milking Shorthorns and notes that their calves are up and looking to eat within ten minutes of being born. She’s less admiring of the Brown Swiss temperament on the whole. “They don’t play well with everybody, and they can be bullies,” she notes. But, Jeff and Lisa value
good cows of any color, and right now their herd is full of them with every cow of every breed being scored Very Good or Excellent.
The 2023 fall show season is right around the corner and Jeff and Lisa are excited to get some of their ‘big hitters’ back on the tanbark trail. The aforementioned Guernsey, Heritage Brook LB Trillium is due September 1st, as is one of their top Ayrshires, Mowry’s Burdette Scarlet EX92, was All-American in 2020 and most recently was seen as the Reserve AllAmerican 4-Year-Old in 2021.
As for the extended future, Jeff who is 65 and Lisa who is 60, aren’t looking for their retirement recliners anytime soon. “I don’t know what we’d do if we retired! We love looking after cows, and we love doing our best for our partners and clients. Our problem in this region is finding a milk truck to haul our milk. Hopefully that situation improves. We’d love to find a young person or couple to eventually take over, but we’re not in a rush for that,” says Lisa.
Their daughter Katie, now a teacher, brings their 2-year-old grandson Emmett to the farm regularly, so it probably won’t be long before the next generation makes the rounds in a Little Britches class. Jeff and Lisa feel as long as they have some boarding cattle that need to go to the shows, they’ll continue to chase that dream.
“It’s expensive to show and it’s expensive to have those cows cared for, so we really strive to have good results for our clients. When you see somebody win their first class at a big show, and you took care of their cow for them, that’s pretty sweet -
almost as good as owning them yourself! Our goal is always the ‘American Flag’ medals - blue, red or white! We’re always trying to get those boarded cattle into the top three consistently at national shows.”

There’s no set amount of time that a good idea must incubate before being put into motion, but ten years might be on the long side. For Dr. Katharine Knowlton, long-time Dairy Science professor at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, VA, an idea to benefit undergrad students in the Dairy Science department first germinated several years ago.
“I wanted to develop an dairy herd project where students made the decisions - truly student-run - and eventually, that idea firmed up to be a student show string where the heifers were at Virginia Tech and raised by student,” Dr. Knowlton states. She anticipates raising 15-20 heifers each year, born in the ‘full-age’ show months of March, June, September, and December.
some to make up the Virginia Tech show string. These calves and heifers will be shown under the Virginia Tech banner at spring and summer shows throughout the region, and the best going on to compete at Harrisburg, Madison and Louisville.
In the world of academia, bringing an idea to reality usually takes many meetings, some revisions, and agreement from people up the ladder. Dr. David Gerrard is the person ‘up the ladder’ from Dr. Knowlton, and he quickly saw the positive features of her plan. As the Department head of Animal and Poultry Sciences for 14 years at Virginia Tech, he enjoys the brainstorming process with faculty members. “We’re always looking for those ‘big ideas’. We’ve done a good job here at Virginia Tech with our grad
to engage our undergraduate students more. It seemed like there had been a decline in opportunities for that group of students,” states Dr. Gerrard. “Katharine is a passionate individual and she is a fantastic advocate for the dairy science students. We have done something similar on the beef side of things with our Livestock Merchandising class, and Katharine already had a foundation to jump start a program with dairy heifers.”
Dr. Knowlton grew up showing Jerseys through the 4-H program in her native Connecticut, and still loves to attend or judge any type of dairy cattle show. She’s been the coach for the VT Dairy Judging team for 30 years - a team which has been National Champion four times in her tenure. With those deep roots in the show ring, and with the hundreds of students that have passed through her classroom and her judging teams, Dr.
“
Katharine is a passionate individual and she is a fantastic advocate for the dairy science students. We have done something similar on the beef side of things with our Livestock Merchandising class, and Katharine already had a foundation to jump start a program with dairy heifers.”
DR. DAVID GERRARD They say ‘it takes a village’ and no less is true for the Virignia Tech “Little All-American” show held annually.Knowlton was uniquely positioned to drum up support for this new venture.
“We hoped we could count on friends, family and alumni to help get it off the ground, and boy, did they come though in a big way,” praises Dr. Knowlton. “The Nathan Hammock family who own and operate Hammock Dairy in Chatham, Virginia stepped up and donated the use of their heifers as recipients to carry embryos, and the calves will be born into their beautiful calf barn. They have one of the healthiest and best managed herds in Virginia, and it is a tremendous advantage to have their help!”
When Dr. Knowlton put out the call to students who wanted to be involved, she was impressed with the initial response. “We had a dozen kids who showed up at the initial planning session. Each student took charge of an element and they came back in two weeks to the general interest meeting with fleshed out plans presented to the 40 or so students attending. The students are now making operating budgets for each segment of the project, which will get off the ground with some up front investment from the College of Agriculture, and also with
donated embryos and IVF sessions. The animals will be housed in a building close to campus - a walkable distance for the student participants.
She will oversee the venture, but it will be student-run and led by barn managers who are students in a paid work-study position. She anticipates 30-40 kids will be involved each year.
“I think that there will be two groups; some who will want to show, and some who don’t. Each of those groups will be equally important,” she notes. “We’re not collecting animals here. We’re going to have to do some marketing, so whether you’re out traveling with the show string or whether you’re hands on with the cattle at the university barn, it will be a great path to experiential learning for all levels from freshmen to seniors.”
Dr. Gerrard saw the immediate value in that structure. “A certain percentage of our animal science or dairy science students don’t come from production operations - some come from the suburbs - so we needed a program where they could get their hands right on the cattle from the start. We have a large, dairy-centered faculty - 14 people
on staff - which is a big advantage for our department. This project a fantastic addition to the undergraduate program already in place,” he states.
The initial leap forward occurred in June, when the first eight embryos were implanted. These were Jersey and Holstein embryos, though the long-term goal is for all dairy breeds to be represented in the project. These embryos will result in March 2024 heifers, which will be the first animals exhibited in the VT show string next year.
Along with Hammock Dairy, her highest praise is for those inaugural embryos donors: Tim & Sharyn Abbott, Aaron Ray Tompkins, Billie Jo Swope Rhodes, and Christine Sheesley-Rozler, as well as for the people at Trans Ova who are helping us with the embryo work.
Dr. Knowlton isn’t shy about her goals for the group. “We acquired embryos with strong, high-type pedigrees, and we aim to compete at the highest national level. Kids who are passionate about showing can come to Virginia Tech and be involved from day one running this stand-alone enterprise!”
By Kathleen O’KeefeWe acquired embryos with strong, high-type pedigrees, and we aim to compete at the highest national level. Kids who are passionate about showing can come to Virginia Tech and be involved from day one running this stand-alone enterprise!”

Through all the ups and downs of the dairy business through the decades, some families sell their herd, but just can’t stay away from having cows in the barn. That certainly describes the Bartlett family of Cold Springs Farm in Farmington, New Hampshire and their successful Milking Shorthorn herd!
The herd was originally located in Salisbury Massachusetts and that’s where Bill Bartlett, his siblings, nieces and nephews exhibited their cattle as 4-H projects in the area in the late 1960s and 1970s. Bill went off to school at Vermont Technical College, and returned to take charge of the farm in the fall of 1980, at which time he changed the farm name to Cold Springs Farm.
Still a show ring enthusiast, Bill started exhibiting at regional and national shows over the next decade and achieved some notable results, including winning Reserve Grand Champion at the PA AllAmerican Show in 1985 with Elmknoll
the Eastern States Exposition with Cold Springs RB Irma, while also winning the Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners at the show. Irma also claimed Reserve AllAmerican honors in 1991.
Bill sold the herd in 2002, but after a couple of years away, the Cold Springs herd was re-established when Bill bought Tex-Stars Arthurs Peri at the National Milking Shorthorn Convention in 2005. ‘Peri’ went on to win Grand Champion at the Winter National Shorthorn Show later that fall. In what was a very auspicious year, Bill met Cheryl Kostka and her daughter, Courtney, who fell in love with the cows as well.
Since then, the cattle numbers at Cold Spring have kept increasing. “We have purchased cows from the Innisfail herd which accounts for many offspring today, along with about 15 offspring from the Peri family,” says Cheryl.
After years of having their cows milked elsewhere, Bill and Cheryl purchased a 100-acre farm in Farmington, New Hampshire in 2019, where they built a new barn designed to fit their DeLaval robot. The new barn maximizes cow comfort with a compost bedded pack, and rotational pasture grazing through the spring and fall.
Currently, Cold Springs has about 120 animals total. The majority of them are Milking Shorthorns, with two Ayrshires, and three Red and White Holsteins thrown in for variety. Their most recent classification totaled 20 EX cows, most with multiple E’s and about 30 Very Good cows.
In 2017, Cold Springs was awarded the Progressive Breeder Award and top Herd Increase at the National Milking Shorthorn Convention. More recognition from fellow Milking Shorthorn breeders came in 2019 at the National Convention, where two of the heifers they consigned topped the sale. The high seller was Cold Springs Lottery Peri who was purchased by Kingsdale and Mike Gregory. She went on to win HM All-American Fall Calf honors in 2019, and was the Reserve All-American Senior 2-Year-Old in 2021. Most recently,
Midwest Spring Milking Shorthorn Show and was HM Grand Champion. The second highest seller that day was Top Shelf CS Just Lovable EXP-ET, who was purchased by Blackhawk Syndicate.
In New England, they have been awarded New Hampshire’s Farm of Distinction which honors farms that make the effort to keep a neat and attractive appearance, and emphasize keeping a clean and healthy herd. Over the years, they have received many Milk Quality awards for low somatic cell count through Dairy-One and Dairy Farmers of America.
Cold Springs Farm is focused on improving their herd with every mating by closely examining their udder, feet, and legs. “We’ve added several cows to our herd with deep and extensive pedigrees, including offspring from Grand
Champions at World Dairy Expo such as Eichlers MD Blanche, Innisfail BDC Stella 905, Trilow Zeus Lala, Gold Mine Poppy, and we currently own Heavenly Betty,” says Cheryl. The Bartletts have been flushing several animals with desirable pedigrees.
While also investing in outside bloodlines, Cold Springs has also continued to develop their own cow families - a prominent one being Cold Springs Logic Peri EX-93 92MS. In her lifetime, ‘Peri’ has made over 120,000 lbs of milk and has averaged 4.2 lbs fat. ‘Peri’ has around 15 offspring total, including Cold Springs Premium Peri VG-87 89-MS, who earlier this year was named Intermediate Champion and HM Grand Champion at the 2023 All-Breeds Spring Show in Springfield, MA.
Another significant cow family at Cold Springs is Cold Springs RU Perfect, who
is also being flushed and has offspring that have made it to the show ring. Not only have the Bartletts been successful exhibiting cattle, but by developing deep pedigrees from influential cows, they have placed several bulls in stud. Some of these include: Innisfail Mega LotteryET, Cold Springs Power Play, Cold Springs RU Parker, Cold Springs PPlay Penalty, and Cold Springs Lotto Payout.
The future of Cold Springs looks bright as Courtney and her fiancé, Chad, have hopes of taking the farm over. They want to continue raising and selling top quality heifers in sales, as well as showing locally and nationally. You’ll have the chance to eyeball the Cold Springs herd yourself, as the family will be one of the tour hosts for 2024 Milking Shorthorn National Convention to be held in New Hampshire!

Sometimes you have a heifer born and you just know they’re going to be a special one. Other times… they take you by surprise and, if you’re lucky, even exceed your expectations. When Todd Bricker kept Bricker-Farms Gibbs Carvella back from getting on the pot load with the rest of the herd during the Bricker Farms sellout in April 2016, he had no idea what the split-second decision would mean for his family in the coming years.
“She was just an average heifer – not huge – but super correct with a good set of feet and legs. Not one we would be wanting to show that year as a summer yearling,” Todd’s wife, Lynsey, remembers.
It wasn’t until she calved in and put an udder on that the couple realized Carvella was, in fact, ‘average’ no more. Over the next few years, the Brickers hauled Carvella to numerous local shows in the Salem, Ohio area. Year after year, show after show, she was recognized as a stand out competitor. Judge Phil Topp said “you can drive a lot of miles to find a cow as balanced as this one” as he tapped Carvella Reserve Supreme Champion at the county fair as a two-year-old.
Todd and Lynsey knew Carvella needed to see steeper competition. They, along with many other fans, believed she could handle it. The time had come in the Fall of 2019 – Carvella was fresh right and ready to rock at the Mid-Atlantic National Ayrshire Show in Harrisburg, PA… or so they thought. Carvella ended up catching an illness and, unfortunately, never made it to the ring. “I prayed she could make the trip home, where we then dried her off,” Lynsey explains.
All the stars finally aligned in 2021, when Carvella earned her first AllAmerican nomination
as an aged cow, and she’s been shining bright since. Just a few of her show ring accolades include the 2021 Reserve Grand Champion and 2022 Grand Champion at New York Spring Show, 2021 Reserve Grand Champion and 2022 Grand Champion at Ohio State Fair, and, in 2023, Grand Champion of the Junior Show at the International Ayrshire Show in 2022. Carvella finished off last year’s run with another All-American title in the Component Merit division.
“She’s such a fun cow to work with. She has her people she likes and people she hates. She gets herself ready and doesn’t really like being a show cow,” Lynsey admits half-jokingly.
Carvella is the type any dairyman or woman can appreciate – she’s accomplished in the show ring, exhibits impressive longevity, excels in milk production (she finished her last lactation just shy of 33,000 pounds!), and is all around just a really sound, functional cow. Just when the Brickers thought she had done it all, Carvella had another surprise in mind, becoming the first Ayrshire to score EX-95 (with an EX-96 mammary),
The team behind Carvella’s recent success at the Ohio State Fair!“Just when we think she’s done all we could ever ask of her, she says watch this! None of this would be possible without the people that care for her day in and day out from bagging her, filling her, clear down to clipping. It takes a team and we have a damn good one! LadyLuck Holsteins is the cow palace and we’re so thankful for her day to day care. She lives like the queen she is.”
LYNSEY BRICKERsince the breeds recent switch to the Holstein Classification system.
“Just when we think she’s done all we could ever ask of her, she says watch this! None of this would be possible without the people that care for her day in and day out from bagging her, filling her, clear down to clipping. It takes a team and we have a damn good one! LadyLuck Holsteins is the cow palace and we’re so thankful for her day to day care. She lives like the queen she is,” Lynsey wrote in her post-classification Facebook announcement.
Carvella has already worked up quite the resume, but her impact on the Ayrshire breed is clearly just ramping up. Though many of her natural calves have been bulls, her current daughters on the ground look promising. Bricker-Farms King Cinderella, a Kingsire daughter
from Carvella, sold at the 2023 Shades of Excellence for $7,800 to Josh & Samantha Fairbanks and Adam Ludwig, IA and just topped the winter yearling class at the 2023 Midwest National Ayrshire Show.
At the 2023 National Ayrshire Convention, Todd and Lynsey sold a Carvella granddaughter sired by Champion who went for $4,750 to Zach Damrow & Abby Porte, ID as well as the rights to a Carvella IVF session, which was the first opportunity of its kind to sell at public auction for any Ayrshire breeder, that brought $4,700 and was purchased by Peter Vail, NY. Carvella embryos by Kingsire, Reynolds, and Prime have also been sold. The Brickers will continue flushing Carvella with plans of making more daughters available in the future.
For as much success as she’s experienced in recent years, Carvella’s best days may
just be ahead. Fresh again in March 2023 at eight-years-old with her sixth calf, Carvella was just named Grand Champion at the Ohio State Fair Ayrshire Junior Show and Reserve Grand Champion in the open show. She’s gearing up to make another appearance on the colored shavings at World Dairy Expo in early October along with her Reynolds march calf.
Carvella’s story is sweet, but it is far from complete. For now, Todd and Lynsey, along with their four girls – Carli, Allison, Lacey and Kinslee – are still relishing in the fact that their homebred girl is the Ayrshire breed’s first to wear an EX-95 score. “Honestly, it hasn’t set in all the way yet that we have bred and owned the breeds most recent EX-95 point cow,” the couple humbly points out.
