Virginia Department of Transportation Roadkill Composting Installation
Construction begins on site, with ACT designed bins being set onto concrete working pad
ACT bins placed and Forced-Air supply system being installed
Each bin is plumbed for aeration and leachate collection
Drains inside the bins collect the excess leachate
Connected to an underground leachate collection system where all the leachate is captured, treated, and returned to the bins to be added manually for optimum moisture levels
Built with water tight doors to eliminate leachate leakage
A 1,000 gallon septic tank was installed to hold and treat the leachate. A 30 curb wall and roof were added for easy access.
Clean-outs installed under the concrete pad facilitate easy drainage maintenance
Aeration is delivered via stainless steel tubing on the bin floor
Very small aeration holes provide pressurized air
Aeration is provided by a central blower
Simple, forced-air control panel
Construction now complete, with covers for rainwater protection and walkways for access and daily operation
Fresh roadkill was delivered to site and dumped onto sawdust ready for processing
ACT composting bins loaded with a skid-steer loader; with minimal cover between layers
Each animal covered with a mix of sawdust and poultry litter until a bed was formed for the next animals
Multiple layers were stacked near the rear, forming a 5 foot tall terrace
Bin design allows for standard skid-steer road equipment to move carcasses
Each animal was loaded and covered with mix
Adding leachate to the pile produced pathogen killing temperature performance
Monday’s Temperature 162 degrees
Amazing performance! Only 38 days after loading nearly 10,000 lbs of deer, this material is still 150 to 160 degrees and significantly decomposed
Bin is fully composted, and ready to be moved out. Folks, you are looking where the deer were just 38 days before!
Clean, odor-free compost, 38 days after loading, this material is still 145 to 150 degrees, complete pathogen-kill, last stage decomposition
Major Success! All criteria met! Proven Composting
"The more I learned about ACT, the more I saw their concept fitting our way of doing business. We needed to handle large volumes of road-‐kill during rut, and higher composting temperatures with no turning required to provide aeration; with no moving parts to breakdown, and a clean, closed-‐loop leachate control system. After one visit to a NC farm, watching them load sows one on top of the other, I was convinced it would work for us. Odor control was extremely critical, and everyone notices the lack of offensive odors. We've looked at other systems but for us, ACT's forced air technology is by far the most applicable to handling our road-‐kill problems. Now we can focus on the implementation and logistics, because we know their system will handle whatever we throw at it.”
