Welcome to the second annual Common Ground Gelbvieh Bull Sale. We would like to thank all the people who made our inaugural sale last year a success. Those who browsed through our catalogue, contacted us, viewed the bulls, visited, registered to bid & purchased. Bulls went to Alberta, BC & Saskatchewan. We as a sale group are very appreciative.
As we look forward to 2023 the optimism regarding the cattle market is noteworthy. Demand for beef will be a driver as the North American cow herd begins to rebuild. We’ve also seen pastures and crops return to productive status with more normal weather patterns. As producers we can be thankful for what the future looks to hold for us.
The Common Ground breeders, Cowlick Ranch, Stonegate Farm, Unger Land & Livestock, 7T Cattle and Dayspring Cattle, have been along side fellow producers and now anticipate the next stage of the cattle cycle with them. The Common Ground breeders have many decades of experience raising cattle in the Canadian environment and know what it takes to thrive.
The Common Ground sale bulls offered for your consideration are from years of selective breeding for traits that are important to you. Included are performance bulls with optimal frame and ample muscle to add the pounds you want when you take your feeders to the market. Along with these are calving ease bulls that will give you a peace of mind during calving season. All these bulls are from a foundation of sound, fertile, docile and productive cows, mated with breed leading sires, that will produce replacement females you’ll want to keep in your herd for years to come.
We invite you to visit our farms to view the bulls and have a chat. We would like to learn what is important to you in the business of cattle. You are also invited to Olds Auction Mart March 16-17, 2023 to view the bulls. There will be some tasty treats to enjoy as you visit with fellow cattle people. Once again this year we are offering a $100 rebate for those who visit us at the farm or stop by Olds Auction Mart March 16-17 to view the bulls.
Climb in the ol’ pickup, hit the road and enjoy looking at some great bulls along with visiting down to earth cattle people.
The Crew at Common Ground
Dayspring Cattle
Dayspring Cattle is located west of the town of Sylvan Lake, AB. We are third generation farmers in Central Alberta and have raised Gelbvieh cattle since 1990. In 1998 we moved our calving to May/June with a focus on forage based genetics. This year we will again be entering our coming yearling bulls in the Olds College RFI (residual feed intake - feed efficiency) trials. Along with this we have our bulls ultrasound measured for carcass traits.
Dan & Marilyn Nielsen
Cowlick Ranch
Cowlick Ranch is located just north of Olds, AB. We have used Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls in our commercial cow calf operation for over 20 years and know first hand the benefits that Gelbvieh can add to a cattle operation. We would like to send a big thank you to Jason and Tamarra Muhlbach of Jace Cattle Company for working with us this past spring and allowing us to come and buy the majority of their herd. This was a big step for us in the seed stock industry and we are excited to build around these cows now! You’ll see some of the bulls we are offering have the JM tattoo - these bulls will have come out of the Jace Cattle program. There is a lot of optimism in the cattle industry right now, and we feel we have put together a set of bulls that are relevant to the industry’s demands. Whether you are looking for a bull to help make some phenomenal replacement heifers or just looking to add some extra pounds to your calves in the fall, we are confident we have something that can work for your cattle needs. It is a privilege to be part of the second annual Common Ground Bull Sale! You are welcome to stop by anytime to view the bulls.
Ryan & Dylana Kary & Family
Stone Gate Farm
Welcome to our 2nd addition of the Common Ground Sale. We were humbled by the support last year, and would like to once again thank each of you that helped make it such a success! This year we have on offer a stout trio of black bulls, a powerhouse red bull and a red heifer bull candidate. They are an extremely good set, as good as we have ever compiled and we welcome your appraisal. Please join us, enjoy a good visit and some camaraderie!
The Hickman Family
UNGER LAND & LIVESTOCK
We are pleased to be part of the Common Ground Gelbvieh Bull Sale this year, along with our fellow breeders. It is a great time to be in the cattle industry and even though we’re getting older, we are excited about the future.
We are located east of Olds and our focus is on cattle that are functional, high quality and that just flat out, work. We are fortunate to be working closely with Ryan and the Cowlick Ranch crew more each year, through embryo transfer, AI and strong herd bulls, producing cattle that meet the needs of the cattle industry.
Stop in anytime, call or visit us during the sale days at the auction mart. It’s always nice to talk cattle and family.
Loren & Karen Unger
7T Cattle
7T Cattle is located on the southwest side of Sylvan Lake and east of Ponoka in the Chain Lakes area. I purchased my first Gelbvieh as a 4H project and I’ve been raising Gelbvieh since. Some of the herd’s genetics still go back to my first Gelbvieh heifer. I calve in May/June and concentrate on a grass/forage based operation. For three years I have entered bulls in the Olds College RFI trial. For the last eight years all of my yearling bulls have been ultrasound tested.

She’s the kind of cow that is simply a producer and can make you money in the cow business; she’s moderate and easy keeping, has awesome fertility and a beautiful udder. Another plus to JM Kade 95K is he has a pretty good set of EPDs as well. This bull is clean fronted, deep bodied, with very good length, and he carries himself on a good dark foot. He has been the best gaining bull since being weaned as well. This guys’ calves are going to be flat out good, ones anyone would be proud to have in their pastures. This guy is the definition of beef bull! He is a percentage bull sired by WFL Westcott 24C. He has a 94lb birth weight with a 810lb weaning weight. We were very close to keeping this guy back to use on our commercial cows because we know he’s the type that will work in the beef industry. From the Canadian Junior Gelbvieh show, Farmfair International, and the Gelbvieh Bull Futurity, he had success at every step. His mother is as good as you will find, and stems from a very old, proven and profitable cow family. There simply is no guesswork here, he will make beautiful females and calves that perform as well as they look! If possible, we would like to collect semen for our own in herd use. Also, we have used an older brother. To say we are confident in his abilities, would be an understatement.
