2022 at a glance

Welcome

Welcome to the 16th Annual Edie Creek Angus 2-Year Old Bull & Female Sale!

We are hoping to see many more of you back in-person for our 16th sale in Ashern now that the world is returning to a sense of normal! We hope that our friends & colleagues in the industry are able to join us for lunch & to have a look at another good set of bulls we have on offer. Of course, we’re always glad to host you back at the ranch just east of Winnipeg in Anola for a tour of the cowherd: being a firmly Maternal breeding program, the value of the cow cannot be overstated, and as such we encourage everyone to see the cows behind the bulls wherever you’re considering genetics!

Cattle markets have a ways to go before they account for the rising input costs & cost of debt. However, the increased calf and feeder prices and future outlook are fairly encouraging, which is welcome news after a (different kind of) challenging year weather-wise... Those of us hanging on & hoping for the best should hopefully start to see better returns soon. The nutritional value of beef is high enough to maintain strong demand, and more and more folks will see through the vegan agenda of “cow burps”. The truth about the many ecosystem benefits of cattle on the land will be discovered by anyone looking for facts. Delicious, nutritious food that comes from creatures that can up-cycle human non--edible food stuffs—what’s not to like about that!?! “Beyond Meat” has seen a 93% drop in the last 3.5 years in share value—the “Impossible to Eat” failures suggest that this fad won’t be around very long!

You’ll notice less pictures of the individual bulls this year, which is partly due to the fact that there will be videos online again of every bull with DVAuction.com, which gives you a better look at them & shows how they move and act, but also because Stefan and I took in the Ranching for Profit (ranchingforprofit.com) course Jan 29th-Feb 4th in Grand Forks, ND. It was a tremendous learning and networking experience which we recommend to all in the business of raising cattle with family & other folks. The time it took however, lessened our time for individual bull pictures.

Speaking of North Dakota, we have a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT to make! We expanded our breeding program by purchasing the Howrey Angus cow herd in ND. Monte Howrey has been a long-time mentor to us & his cattle have excelled in low-input operations across North America including our own. We are very grateful to Monte for offering us this opportunity & for his time & patience in mentoring us over the years, which shaped our breeding program. We are very excited that he has agreed to continue to work with us and give us guidance going forward. The Howrey Angus cowherd was built with the sole focus of creating profitable, low input Angus cattle, that excel in maternal performance traits & have always been required to work for a living, and we will continue that vision! We will be having a timed-online bull sale this Fall conducted from the Rath Ranch in Sterling, ND, as we look forward to working with the Rath family for many years to come!

Before the sale, come see the sale bulls and the cows behind the bulls: the cows will be out grazing corn or grazing a sorghum silage pile… Extensive grazing is an important tool in the Rancher’s toolbox of Reducing Costs, and we’d be glad to visit anytime year-round about grazing techniques and novel forage options we’ve learned to appreciate through our Union Forage experiences that suit your resources & environment!

EDIE CREEK GREAT ONE 77F R1

Tattoo:

Great One 77F is an exciting bull for us. An aggressive breeder, he covered 50 2-4yr old cows this past summer with only 3% of them being open—during the worst drought we have ever experienced. His dam was Stefan’s favourite Howrey Angus female, but sadly was found over-centre the winter after raising 77F. 77F is structurally sound, has thrived in our environment, and has the maternal lineage to accomplish our breeding goals. 77F has great slope from hooks to pins, excellent neck extension and hard, tidy feet. His first daughters in production have some of the best udders we’ve ever had. Now deceased.

EDIE CREEK FULL BORE 34F R2

Much has been said about 34F’s dam 606S. To recap here: she’s one of the best footed & uddered cows, and also the most fertile to walk our pastures. As a natural son of 606S, 34F had high expectations, and as the picture shows, he exceeded them. Sire Full Bore 730 was a cow-producing mainstay at Neiman Cattle Co in Wyoming, and we were fortunate to have him walk our pastures at the end of his career.

EDIE CREEK BIG TIME 848C R3

We can’t introduce 848C without telling the story of his now 20yr old Dam, 693N, the top Headliner daughter raised at OCC, from whom Ohldes used numerous sons and daughters. 693N epitomizes maternal efficiency in a structurally sound package: her Dam was 19 and Granddam was 21. Going forward, we intend for every Edie Creek Angus pedigree to contain 693N at least once, she is that good. 848C has been a stellar breeder, stamps functional forage-efficient cattle with classic Angus heads, and is carrying forward the OCC strain at Edie Creek Angus. Now owned by Vee Tee Angus.

RED CALVO RED GRAZER 8E R4

Grazer 8E is sired by OCC Red Grazer 610Z & his dam is a Donor cow that Calvo Family Red Angus (Nebraska) have retained 4 sons from. Sire OCC Red Grazer 610Z is known for creating excellent females, as attested by current owner Rick Calvo: “We have a lot of daughters in production out of Grazer, and they are as perfect as they come. Moderate framed females with a lot of rib shape. They are feminine made with absolutely perfect udders. If you’re looking for the type of bulls that are going to perform on grass and sire efficient females that wean off a big calf every year, these 610Z sons are the ones you need to look at.” - Rick Calvo

Now owned by Gemstone Cattle Co.

MH TITAN 752 R5

MH Titan 752 will increase fertility and longevity in any pedigree he is in. He bred 40+ cows as a 11yr old bull, and had a smaller breeding group as a 12 and 13yr old. His breeder, Monte Howrey, said “Titan: the older he gets, the more I appreciate him. Just no holes in him: feet are great, Athletic, incredible disposition. Fertile and highly intelligent...he’s probably the most USEFUL bull I have ever bred.” Titan comes from the same cow family as DDA Emblazon 27C. We don’t think you’ll find better feet on a mature bull than Titan’s, they are impeccable. Titan also tested “TT” for Leptin in the Quantum DNA test. MH Titan 752 is now deceased.

We purchased NCC 629 to replace his sire Full Bore. He is the result of a father daughter mating, tightening the predictability of his offspring. He is a taller bull, whose daughters will likely make 1350-1400 lb cows. Ryan Neiman, Neiman Cattle Co. formerly owned Full Bore 730: “His sons are masculine, wide based massive cattle with added length and muscle. The bulls cover cows with lots of libido and athleticism while maintaining good flesh. More impressively his daughters are extremely productive calf raising machines with good udders, maternal instinct and fertility”

RED OCC EASY RED 868A R7

OCC Easy Red 868A is a one of a kind bull in Canada. We have found that Easy Red does phenotypically what we are trying to do with our Black Angus program in a linebred, genetically prepotent RED package! Easy Red will fix what the Red Angus breed needs fixing: foot quality, natural muscling ability & ease of fleshing on forage alone. He traces 9x to Dixie Erica 1019, the foundation cow of the black program at OCC and 5x to PCC Colorado Hobo. Also Leptin Genotype tested as “TT”. There are no sons in this year’s sale, but all the red bulls in this sale are out of Easy Red daughters, he will play a large role in our Red Angus herd for years to come. OCC Easy Red 868A is now deceased.

Why use an Edie Creek Angus 2-Year Old Bull?

We are over 20 years along in our journey of genetic progress and have learned many lessons on the way! We’ve learned that there is no such thing as a “free lunch”: not in physics, economics, or in producing beef cattle.  The math is simple. The more time and money you invest into your cattle the more you must get out of them. Solar Energy and Hybrid Vigour are the closest things we have to a “free lunch”, so we need to maximize their cumulative benefits, with cow herds that efficiently turn low quality forages (grass) into high quality protein (beef).

Before the drought of 2021, winter or summer, our cows have taken care of their own daily needs for over a decade on a zerostarch, forage-only program. We have used this as a selection pressure on our cow herd. Not all cows are built to thrive and rebreed on a forage-only diet. We have moved forward with the cow families that remain. They are fertile, moderate 1250lb cows that maintain excellent udders while calving on pasture, and carefully mother their calves!

To build on a foundation of longevity, we use Herdsires that have dams and grandams that have produced calves well into their teens. The oldest dam (recently departed) would be 20yr old OCC Dixie Erica 693N and her dam produced until she was 19yrs old.

Reproduction is the most important factor affecting profitability. We have tightened the screws on reproductive longevity by shortening our breeding season and using multi-sire breeding groups. Heifers are exposed to bulls for 45 days, and the cows see bulls for 50 days. The two main cow herds had Angus bulls for the first 30 days, and a Fleckvieh bull for the last cycle—thus ensuring only the most fertile females produce offspring that we select purebred parent stock from. Multi-sire breeding groups ensure that the most fertile bulls get the job done — another step in improving fertility. After all, reproduction is 5x more important than growth rate, and 10x more important than carcass quality when it comes to your profit.

Our gene pool stems from proven descendants of renowned maternal bloodlines such as Traveler, Emulation, Shoshone, Quantum & Wye that have thrived in low-input environments across the continent. We stack cows and cow families in our pedigrees that have raised calves every year into their teens. This enables us to offer a more consistent pen of bulls every year: prepotently bred bulls which stamp a consistent pen of calves, including daughters that can be counted on to become reliable mama cows.

Cattle have vast complexities & wide-ranging genetic expressions in differing environments. Pursuing profitable, ranch adapted cattle requires the same maternal performance traits, no matter where you are. With the complexities of genetics, we rely on animals that have performed in the environment we ask them to, to show us who to select as breeding stock. This method of selection has taught us a lot over the years.

Our cattle are not perfect. But they are bred for a specific purpose. Time and experience has shown performance and carcass EPD’s can not guide the selection of a functional cowherd in real-world conditions, and are in fact antagonistic traits to fertility, longevity and functionality in the cow herd. Many breeding programs claim their bulls can do all things - Maximizing growth and offering maternal greatness in one package. There is no moderate-framed cow herd that comes from using bulls bred for maximizing growth. You can’t get a 1250lb cow if the bred heifer is weighing 1250lbs. Same goes for the bulls you use - 2yr old bulls should not weigh 1800-2000 lbs if you expect their daughters to be moderate. Form Follows Function!

Feeding big cows means big maintenance(feed) costs every year. Bigger weaning weights ideally will be achieved from using the benefits of hybrid vigour and Terminal Sires being mated to moderate cows. Keeping replacement heifers out of Terminal (growth) bulls that have never been selected for cowherd FERTILITY will steal your chance at optimizing profit, it results in reduced fertility and cow-herd frame size creep that costs you more to feed every year! Terminal-Maternal Crossbreeding systems are the most efficient way to produce beef cattle. Profitability falls by the way-side when chasing maximum production levels.

Our bulls are bred with generations of fleshing ability, fertility, capacity, correct feet, longevity and udder quality. Edie Creek bulls will sire calves that are born easily and nurse quickly.

They will establish an efficient, maternal “Cowherd Factory” from which you can then mate with terminal sires to add hybrid vigour performance and the “flavour of the day” in hide colour. Doing this will create a functional, long-living cowherd able to wean calves with maximum efficiency in your commercial ranch environment.

When you buy 2-year-old bulls from Edie Creek Angus, you get a carefully developed breeding bull. You can turn these Rugged 2-yr olds out and expect them to breed more cows than yearling bulls & come back in better shape. They are more durable and last under real-world breeding conditions. Longevity is as important in your Herd Bulls as it is in your cowherd! By developing them for an additional year it allows us to sort them in our pastures instead of yours.

Increasing the profitability of the commercial cattle producer is the focus of our breeding program.

We really enjoy talking about beef production, so please give us a call or stop by for a tour and we can talk about beef production systems, our breeding program, or any of the cattle for sale.

EDIE CREEK BIT TIME 12J

Edie Creek Big Time 848C did a lot of things right: his dam 693N lived to be 20yrs old. And you wouldn’t find a 4yr old cow that had better feet than her. ECA 12J is the leadoff-bull type: a massive chested, big-middled, long-spined herdsire looking bull that has the right structure to make awesome cows. He will bring forward the traits needed to push cattle to work for you.

EDIE CREEK BIG TIME 29J

His dam, Melisa 509, is a maternal sister to our Reference sire MH Titan 752. Titan bred cows until he was 13yrs old. We have a maternal brother to this bull, a Sinclair Executive son, working as a herdsire in our Howrey Angus herd in ND. Most of the maternal grandmas in this pedigree raised calves into their teens. Despite a higher birthweight, 29J will calve on cows very easily, he is built smoothly. A balanced and complete forage-efficient type of bull.

EDIE CREEK BIG TIME 40J 3

Another excellent Big Time 848C son with a strong top & long spine. He has a nice square hip on him and a big rib cage. Lot 3 puts it all together with a fluid stride. Very correct-made bull. His dam is a nice Dixie Erica female with a wide muzzle and firm udder attachment who is registered in the US but not Canada. She is a neat combination of practical, renowned Angus genetics.

EDIE CREEK GREAT ONE 64J 5

64J is another great looking 77F son with good length and strong top. He is very correct made and will make some beautiful cows! The Flora cow family is one of our best. They are beautifully feminine cows with some added frame size. They are attentive mothers that get the job done when it comes to raising calves. ECA 24C has that great Bonsma wedge-shape.

EDIE CREEK GREAT ONE 65J 4

65J is an outstanding herdsire candidate. He is very smooth & strong topped, with great pelvic structure and great feet. Frances 186 was a picture perfect Titan daughter. She had tidy feet and udder with great fertility. Great One 77F has proven to get extra cows bred and is making perfect udders on his daughters. This bull has the potential to be every bit as good a bull as MH Titan 752. If we didn’t already have an excellent 77F son out our 606S cow, we would be keeping this bull. Unfortunately his mother died on pasture and we did not get a DNA sample from her. So it might not be possible to register calves out of this bull in Canada, but it could be done in the American Angus Association.

EDIE CREEK GREAT ONE 83J

Smooth-made Heifer Bull with a definite calving-ease skull structure. Our 77F daughters have impeccable udders. 83J should fix udders and feet. Maternal grandam 606S is the most Fertile cow we have ever had. True low maintenance genetics here. Its not every day you will find a bull out of an OCC Moonshine daughter.

EDIE CREEK GREAT ONE 86J

11.0

A more moderate-framed, smooth-fronted Heifer Bull with excellent feet just like the rest of the 77F sons. Excellent foot/ leg quality from all sides of this pedigree. 3/4 brother to the lot 6 bull. Maternal brother sold last year to Kody Aesoph, South Dakota.

Lots 8 and 9 are another pair of 3/4 brothers. 25J has been a standout bull since he was very young, and is now a thickmuscled stud with a very square hip. Dam 25Y is a 12yr old cow who will calve this year with her 11th calf. She has calved first cycle 8/10 calves to date.

Big-barrelled Heifer Bull! If you liked the Easy Red sons we had in past sales, this bull will bring all the Easy Red traits forward more consistently than others we have sold in the past. He is the result of a half sib mating that will reduce the variables in the genetic pool. Please note that his dam died on pasture and we did not get a DNA sample from her, so 51J can’t sire registered purebred calves in Canada. One of our Red Angus Herdsires ( ECA 19F ) is a full brother to the 93G cow, and we co-own him with Gemstone Cattle co.

F1 FleckAngus Bull with a powerful herdbull presence. He has a wide muzzle but narrow skull, so he should calve easily. He strides out well, has good scrotal shape, and is surprisingly tall considering his moderate parents. We don’t have a cow in our herd who has weaned a higher % of bodyweight than the dam of this bull. 71B is a friendly cow who is designated Elite by the Canadian Angus association. She is also the dam of our Herd sire ECA 31H, who will have sons in next years bull sale. We have debated about keeping this bull to use on our own cows.

Big strong F1 FleckAngus Bull with a lighter Birthweight. 42J is a very impressive individual & has a long spine and a good square hip on him. He is a sound, athletic breeding machine. Note that he does have small scurs.

“We have purchased bulls from Edie Creek for many years. The bulls have worked hard and have all proven that they are easy calvers. Just like we hoped, the calves bounce up full of vigor too. We like that the bulls are raised the way we ranch. Our feeding style is low input and the bulls have flourished on it. The Bouws have built a great business that we can trust and we plan to be a customer for a long time.”

This bigger-framed bull is almost showing some hybrid vigour: being a cross of Cole Creek and Ohlde gene pools. The 1100 Sire is new blood for us that we’re sampling due to the shared goals of the Cole Creek breeding program. Lot 20 will make 1350lb cows that are very fertile and productive. Heifer Bull. 71J is a really moderate framed bull with lots of rib depth and smooth calving ease build. He would also be useful in a grass-finished beef program. Lot 22 has quite a bit of linebreeding in his pedigree as well as a lot of cows that raised calves into their teens. ECA 137F is a very easy fleshing, moderate cow with a tidy udder.

Smooth-fronted Heifer Bull. Here’s a bull from the Frances cow family. His dam is probably one of the smallest cows in our herd weighing 1070lbs at age 4. She weans a high % of her bodyweight and has raised another great bull calf after this guy. The moderate frame is key both for reducing frame size and efficiency/finishing on grass!

Really nice bull here: deep chested, thick, muscular, deep hip on him with a good set of testicles. Our dedicated maternal program is based on cows that perform without crutches. Few breeding programs require their heifers to breed as yearlings on a forage-only diet in a 45 day window. ECA 106E is a great example of the kind of cows we are striving for. She has gotten over the ever-challenging hurdle of rebreeding as a 2 yr-old cow, & has done it by calving 1st cycle every year, raising great calves. Last year her son sold to Kody Aesoph, SD.

Another bull out of a cow that has calved first cycle every year. Sire 34F is a son of our most fertile cow 606S, so you can up++ your fertility game in your cowherd with this guy. Despite an 88-lb BW, this guy is made long and smooth with a clean shaped head on him, so he’ll calve very easily on cows. He is long-spined, with great feet under his nice square-cornered hips. A breeding machine, if you will.

This smooth-headed cow-making specialist will bring the best of what we can offer for longevity traits. He has a 3/4 brother working at the MBFI herd north of Brandon, MB. The original Lady Erica 1652L cow raised calves until she was 18 and OCC Dixie Erica 693N punched her ticket at age 20. Both cows had impeccable feet & weren’t ever lame. Our program is not claiming maternal performance through the man-made accreditation given by EPD’s. Our cows prove it them selves & our selection bias towards teenage ancestry cements that functionality.

He also has excellent feet as his sire 1F came from 2 of the best-footed individuals you could find: MH Titan 752 & our old 693N donor cow… By no coincidence, those 2 parents of 1F were very long-lived as well at 13 & 20 respectively. 96J’s dam ECA 66W is a great example of what an OCC Legacy daughter can do. She is 14yrs old now, and has been a very profitable cow for us.

O C C GREAT PLAINS 943G

O C C JUANADA 737L

Big bodied bull out of a productive Lady Erica cow. 59J has been a looker since he was a calf. ECA 15Z has had multiple high selling bulls in our sale over the years. She is an 11yr old cow that is pregnant with her 10th calf. Great wedge shaped cow.

This bull is an absolute power house: long spine, good hind quarter, and great feet that carry him on fluid strides. Sire 77F makes excellent udders, and his dam 629 has a good udder considering how well she milks. With his dam being a daughter of Full Bore, his calves will have a little more bone and power than most. There is some good longevity in this pedigree as well, since the 084 Granddam is still going in the Howrey Angus herd in North Dakota at age 13.

RED EDIE CREEK RED GRAZER 146J 32

146J is a nice bull with a great hind quarter, deep chest, strong topline, and good testicles. The Red Angus breed certainly has its struggles. Poor feet and udders are endemic throughout. We have a small Red herd that with time we believe will be one of the greatest assets in the country for low input, grass farmers.

Heifer Bull. Another nice long-spined, deep chested bull with good feet and a strong topline. Dam is a big-middled Easy Red daughter. We bought the Calvo Red Grazer 8E bull from Calvo’s in Nebraska. He is now owned by Gemstone Cattle Co.

Not Registered. When we brought up Howrey Angus heifers 7yrs ago, there were a few that we couldn’t get registered in Canada, and the dam of this bull is one of those cows. 621 is a very easy fleshing cow with great capacity & fertility. This bull has a great temperament & excellent feet, and he displays good masculinity. Keeping heifers from this bull will improve your herd’s low-maintenance traits. His sire is either ECA 1F or ECA 77F.

“Over the years we have bought 16 bulls sight unseen from Edie Creek Angus. We trust their breeding program. We have large, wet heavily treed pastures. The bulls look good and stand up well in these conditions. We have trouble free calving with strong healthy calves. We are also happy with our weaning weights.”

EDIE CREEK GREAT ONE 94J 39

Heifer Bull. Super long-spined with an expressive hind quarter, good feet & legs, and an excellent hair coat. His dam, ECA 21Z, is a wide-hipped, feminine 11yr-old cow that is a little bigger than our herd average, but she’s never been thin a day in her life. She’s also calved first cycle every year. If you want to improve the fertility in your cow herd, why not use a bull that’s had a dam who has calved first

This bull will fix udders. His dam had pinky sized teats and a really great udder structure. His sire 1F should also make awesome udders on his daughters since Titan was an udder fixer, and 693N was the ideal cow. Besides making beautiful cows, this bull is very easy on the eyes, with a clean Angus head and a deep masculine chest. Grandam produced until she was 11.

DID YOU KNOW?

• Reproduction is the most important factor affecting profitability

• Reproduction is 5X more important than growth rate, and 1OX more important than carcass quality when it comes to profit.

• Body Condition has the greatest impact on reproduction. ("Edie Creek bulls will sire Easier Fleshing Cows that can hold Body Condition.”)

• Thin cows are only half as productive as those in optimum condition

• Every missed breeding cycle represents a 42 lb loss in weaning weight.

Heifer bull. Not Registered. If you like your cows efficient and in a small package, this bull will do it. This bull calf has been a stud since he was a calf and is still really handsome

Really neat bull. Both Mina 609 and Pride 5893R raised calves well into their teens. The Mina 609 was the quintessential wedge-shaped cow that left awesome daughters. Pride 5893R holds the record for us with

Lots 49 and 50 are very similarly bred. 661 is a refined, feminine Shoshone Solomon 316 daughter with an excellent udder. These bulls are quite consistent, so it’s tough to describe the differences between them after a while!

Heifer Bull. Not Registered. OCC X Shoshone is a great combination of genetics. The udder quality on 639 leaves some things to be desired, however we’ve never had to help her calves latch-on & Big Time will improve the udder structure. A very nice bull to close off this year’s sale.

DUE TO START CALVING MAY 3RD, 2023 EXPOSED TO CALVING EASE ECA BULLS FOR 45 DAYS

Our program is design to create Angus cattle that can raise a calf on their own, and do it consistently. Our Goal is to supply our customers with females that can be used to create a profitable cowherd factory which you can then cross with terminal sires to capture the cumulative benefits of hybrid vigour and the “flavour of the day” in hide colour. Doing this will create a functional, long-lived cowherd that will wean calves at optimum efficiency in your commercial ranch environment. The Opportunity is Yours!

All the Angus heifers come straight out of our Purebred herd. They sell today without registration papers. The F1 - FleckAngus heifers will have some extra power and the ability to raise some dandy calves.

These heifers have not been pampered. They got bred as yearlings without ever having any grain or pellets - Forage only diet. They spent this past winter out corn grazing with our cows and calves until the end of February. They are fit and in great shape, not lazy or over fed.

Maternal Performance

Cows whose genetic background has focused on increasing size and gain every generation will not produce the most functionally efficient females in a forage-based system.

Having an efficient, moderate maternally-oriented cowherd is an important basis for profitable beef production on the prairies, especially in a drought scenario when Nature is exerting extreme pressures. This beef-production “Factory” that excels in Maternal traits can be bred to any combination of terminal sires to produce the kind of market calves desired… Maternal performance is measured by more than weights and EPD’s:

• Hardiness & Repeatability/Consistency – We stack proven cows in our pedigrees that have raised calves fault free into their teens. Linebreeding to these cows will bring predictability & uniformity.

• Fertile & Functional – 90% of this year’s sale bulls were born in the first cycle. – Their parents are succeeding under the selection pressure we are applying by way of a short breeding season & the competition factor of multi-sire breeding groups.

• Calving on pasture in May without night-checks or close supervision means that calving ease & maternal instincts need to be automatic in our herd.

• Sound & Correct – Breeding stock are selected only if they and their ancestors have excellent foot and udder structure.

• High Standards – Heifers are raised on a forage only (no-starch) diet, required to calve at 2 yrs of age, instead of giving them a pass as they’re growing. They are only given a 42-day breeding season, which means that the most fertile are given the privilege of becoming cows. Open heifers & cows fill our demand for our direct-to-restaurant ground beef sales.

Again, 85% of the 2021 calf-crop were born in the first 30 days of Calving season, and that was done on a grain/starch-free diet for the cows and heifers. As much as the grain-free diet isn’t true now that we are grazing corn, the high fertility and tight calving season has been proven in this herd by previous years’ success.

OCC LEGACY 839L FOUNDATION GENETICS AT EDIE CREEK ANGUS

OCC Legacy 839L was truly the foundation of the Edie Creek Program. He was owned by Crowfoot Cattle Co, Hillfire Angus, and B.B.A.R., they bought him and collected semen on him. Legacy was a masculine, hormonally balanced, athletic breeding machine that duplicates his own type in his sons., and leaves broody, deep, easy fleshing cows. We were fortunate to walk several sons in our pastures, as well as use him in our A.I. program. Sire Echelon is a son of the great Dixie Erica of CH 1019 cow, the OCC matron of Emblazon, Focus, Great Plains and many foundational OCC sires. Havlng lived until age 21, she set the bar for longevity, productivity, and had one of the most refined udder structures of any Angus cow. You will also find the Dixie Erica of CH 1019 cow in our Red Angus cattle. The pedigree of our OCC Easy Red 868A bull has 1019 in it 9 times. We plan on turning back to OCC Legacy in the near future for our herd.

OCC GREAT PLAINS 943G & OCC DIXIE ERICA 907C

OCC Great Plains and OCC Dixie Erica 907C can be found in almost all the pedigrees of our cow herd. In the words of Tim Ohlde, “Great Plains excels his sire (N Bar Emulation EXT) in every EPD”, from carcass merit to growth, and his daughters are structurally correct, highly fertile cows with great mothering instincts. Many breeders who focused on maternal quality used Emulation back on Traveler bred cattle with great success. Our goal was to maintain maternal aspects & longevity, which is why we pursued the Great Plains line - keeping with the Dixie Erica 1019 cow (dam of many great OCC bulls) which we could trust. MH Titan & ECA Great One 79Y were both excellent sons of OCC Great Plains. Donor Dam 693N is a great example of longevity, fertility & structural correctness. She is now 18, her dam 907C was 19 and great grand dam 1019 made it to 21!

“WE ARE STACKING PROVEN BLOODLINES THAT HAVE PRODUCED PROBLEM-FREE INTO THEIR TEENS TO PRIORITIZE FERTILITY AND LONGEVITY.”

BULL RATINGS EXPLAINED

CALVING EASE

Based on the bull's birthweight, his parents' birthweight, and his own EPD's. Also based on the assumption that the bull will be breeding small-framed Angus/British cattle--if the bull will be breeding larger-framed Continental cattle, a three-star (***) bull should work on heifers without any trouble. These are simply guidelines to help your decision making. You are ultimately responsible for the matings of your own cattle.

CALVING EASE RATING

 Suitable for breeding cows only - 100 lb+ Birth weights possible

 Suitable for breeding smaller cows-90 lb+ Birth weights possible

 Suitable for breeding cows and larger-framed, mature heifers - 85 lb BW’s

 Suitable for breeding heifers & cows too

 HEIFER BULL, easy deliveries with vigorous calves at birth!

UDDER RATING

Based on the quality of the dam's udder structure and teat shape and size. Rated between "1" - "5", a score of "3" would be an average, functional udder, while a score of "5" would be a perfectly level udder with small, shapely teats.

FLESHING RATING

Designed to predict the ability of the bull's offspring to thrive in a forage-only environment. The forage rating is also a suitable indicator of the bull's own ability to stay in good flesh on a low-energy ration ("easy-keeping-ness"). Rated between "1" - "5", a score of "3" would be moderately easy fleshing, while a score of "5" would be very easy fleshing and his offspring would finish on forages alone.

BORN 1ST CYCLE?

This indicates if a bull was born in the first 21 days of the calving season. This includes bulls that were born early from short gestation. All Angus bulls on offer were born in the first 30 days of our calving season.

AOD: Age of Dam. Actual age of the bull’s dam when she raised him.

BULL DEVELOPMENT

These bulls have been raised on their mothers milk and grass. They were weaned in late November, then brought in and fed grass seed screenings, sunflower screenings, 4lbs of barley and 3lbs DM Corn Silage. Their hay rings had either hay or greenfeed bales. In May they were turned out to pasture, with no supplements, where they grew on some pretty wet (low-DM) grass until the beginning of November. We started giving them silage bales at this time. Bulls are fed with the goal of developing them into hard muscled bulls, not chubby, soft, doughboys! Starting in December of 2022 they were fed a TMR ration along with free choice Sorghum/Millet bales in their rings. The TMR ration consisted of 4lbs of wheat, grass seed screenings, sunflower screenings and some corn silage. As you will see, they have not been pushed with hard feed to ensure that they breed longer for you.

THE BULL PROGRAM

Bulls can be kept at Edie Creek Angus for $2/day until May 1st. After that the cost will be $3/day. Free delivery available in Manitoba. If you take your bull home on sale day we will give you a $50 discount on each bull. We strongly recommend that you purchase insurance on any bulls returning to our yard after the sale. We are not responsible for any un-insured injuries that occur before the bull is delivered.

USA DELIVERY

Bulls selling into the USA will be charged an additional $250/bull to cover export testing fees. We will assist with arrangements for the bulls to be shipped to wherever you are in the US, at the buyers cost. HS Knills is the trucking company we have used in the past. Contact them to get an idea of what the brokerage and trucking costs will be.

"Too many people view milk as a maternal trait. I view it as “anti-maternal.” “Maternal” is fertility, maternal calving ease, good mothering instinct and survivability. The rancher who develops good cows adapted to a low-input environment, sized right with moderate milking ability and with good hybrid vigor will soon have a high percentage of his/her cows calving in the first 30 days of calving. This rancher can sell a few cows to the rancher who wants to buy replacements, use a terminal cross bull and sell all the calves."
