The time has come. All the cows must go!

It is with mixed feelings that we close this chapter of the Ulrich Hereford legacy. It all started with Dad back in 1968 and has continued through to these closing sales, this one in December 2022 and the last one on February 21, 2023.

We have always prided ourselves on our dedication to the Hereford breedits contribution to the cattle industry in Canada, its promotion as premier breeding stock, and its performance and pride in producing good, good cattle. The Herefords have been good to us, but after several years of drought, the difficulties of finding good help, and new health challenges, an offer on the land came along with the right price and the right timing. That has provided this incredible opportunity for you to purchase our esteemed cows and carry on the wonderful Hereford traditions with your own families.

The Spring of 2022 looked hopeful. A few rains provided enough growth for some silage and a few more hay bales than the year before. The year dried out in mid-July and the grasshoppers returned again to compete with the cattle for every blade of grass. It was a beautiful long Fall in southern Alberta, which Winter so rudely interrupted in early November!

Unfortunately, we didn’t have an opportunity to RFI test our yearlings this year, and were really disappointed. We have been a strong advocate of the CHA’s RFI (feed efficiency) program and have had great success with our genetics proving themselves against not only the rest of the breed but the entire GrowSafe database. See page 50. We would like to see the feed efficiency program continue to thrive.

The dispersal has been split into two sales to spread out the workload and provide more opportunities for the buyers. The bred cows and some bred heifers along with a small number of bulls sell in December. The Fall cows will be selling in the Spring along with the bulk of the bulls and the rest of the bred heifers.

Mom & Dad have both escaped Covid to date. However the isolation of staying at home has really hit Dad hard, without the chance to visit with friends and family which he always enjoyed so much. We’re all getting older, and I’m looking forward to having more time to look after my health and slow down some also.

I have immense gratitude toward both my parents for the opportunity, the knowledge, and the support they have provided to me for all these years. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I am pleased to have carried on their legacy all these years - and have also been a member of the Canadian Hereford Association for over 50 years myself!

So, as the beginning of the end brings us together on December 13th, I, too, look forward to seeing you all in Lethbridge. Thanks so much for your support!

TERMS & CONDITIONS

TERMS - The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at Lethbridge, AB, on Sale Day. The right of property shall not pass until settlement is made. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released. For US export, USDA and individual state rules will apply.

BIDS - Every animal entering the sale ring will be sold to the highest bidder. A floor price will apply to each animal consigned.

DISPUTES - In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.

PURCHASER’S RISK - Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold.

ANNOUNCEMENTS - Errors discovered in the catalogue will be corrected by announcements from the Auction Stand at sale time and such corrections will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue.

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY - A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after settlement is made.

SHIPPING - Assistance will be given in making shipment after the sale, but no risk is assumed by Balog Auction, or the seller. Delivery to central points in Alberta will be made at seller’s convenience. Out-of-province purchases will be delivered by commercial hauler at shared cost. Any additional expenses are the responsibility of the buyer, including duty, brokerage fees, etc.

BREEDER’S GUARANTEE - The consignors have done everything possible to assure you, the buyer, that every bull in this sale will be a breeder. A certified veterinarian has semen tested and physically evaluated every bull. However, should a problem arise, please inform the seller so further arrangements may be made.

Jim Hole was known as one of the all-time premier breeders in Canada, & once said that “43K” was the best bull he ever raised! Some had also claimed he was the best & most complete bull they had ever seen. 43K was smooth, thick, extremely heavy-boned with an outstanding yellow haircoat, & moved as freely as any bull could move. Daughters are feminine & growthy; sons keep on growing. These attributes are just as important today. It’s bulls like 43K that have made the breed what it is today!

This light-coloured, good-haired bull with the Canadian pedigree was long & thick with sound feet. He pasture-bred until he was 12 years old! These were all good reasons for Misty Valley Farms to collect this bull. We bought some semen and were really pleased with the excellent females he left in our herd, improving udders superbly. His sons were easy to sell also.

22B has long been leaving well-put-together females with good hair and excellent udders. These females are infused with stayability and have been highly regarded by both commercial and purebred cattlemen alike! Not only have the females excelled like our special 511E, but 22B has injected our operation with fine sons such as 97J, an outstanding light birthweight sire and 53L who was Grand Champion at the Medicine Hat Bull Sale in 2003.

Goggle-eyed, & red to the toes with pigmented feet, this was a stout son of 705! Extra thick in his butt and over the top, he was an impressive bull. He held his head up, bright & alert but was calm as a house kitten. Great doing ability was evident, and great carcass numbers concurred (3rd in Ribeye, and 128 index Marb)! The dam brought 21M light birthweight genetics and provided rich, rich milk from a great udder. 67X was also co-owned with Bert Anderson. 67X ranks top 4% in feed efficiency of all breeds in GrowSafe's database (over 270,000 head).

2Y was a great heifer bull for us, and produced outstanding females. His excellent dam, 511E, created many excellent sons down through the years. The sire of 2Y was Fred Peacock's 47F with a rich history of many great offspring whose feet & udders stood up to the longevity of this papa and mama.

a level bag & small well-placed teats. His sire, 77J, left high performance sons with pigment & great daughters. We got some awesome calves from 48Y by AI before bringing him back from Douglas Lake, BC with Greg Barber of Leslie, SK. 48Y is now in the top 1% most feed efficient of all the high accuracy sires in GrowSafe’s database!!

Stout, stout & stout stacked on top of Calving Ease – Pete also had plenty of marbling thrown in for good measure (+0.21 MARB EPD). All these youngsters display that vigour that Pete stamps on newborn calves! His daughters are good, good, producers that last!

Zoom 18Z exuded performance, eye-appeal, growth, length, depth & great markings. He exhibited the thickness & capacity of the old, along with the femininity & feet of the new! 94 lb BW, 758 lbs 205-day wt (116 indx), 1112 365-day wt (110 indx), REA 1.09/100 lbs. We’re pleased that his numerous progeny have proven his feed efficiency (RFI 105)! Also worthy of mention: BW: 45 sons of 18Z avg’d 87 lbs, 40 dtrs avg’d 85 lbs at birth! Plus his dam 76S’s pedigree is backed by great cattle.

We were really pleased with the weights when KGA 48A’s offspring arrived (bull calves averaged 78 lbs BW and heifer calves averaged 70 lbs at birth) and not just light birthweights, but nice performance too! Shared with Doerksen’s at Gem, AB - 48A was smooth & correctdelivering calving ease plus performance. Plus his daughters turned out well too, with nice moderate-sized udders & teats.

length, thickness & extra-wide top & sound solid feet!? All of these traits he passed on to his progeny. His stats included an 86 lb BW, 109 WN index, REA 1.21/100 lbs, & LMY 66.3! Dam 905W was tremendous with nice even teats on a tight udder. Yes, 28Z certainly added some Zeal to our herd! He went on to be owned by Jon McKenzie & Jim Wildeman, Warner, AB.

SERVICE SIRE

General Absolute was an impressive bull by 114L with the signature muscle, bone, hair, length, and wide top, and well-marked. In addition to carrying on his sire's legacy, his mother was the dam of the high seller in one of our annual sales that sold to Beery Land & Livestock Co.

407B blasted outrageous performance (123 WN & 118 YW indexes) & red testicles. His sire, 127Y, had impressed us with quality & conformation, eye-appeal & that excellent woolly haircoat. Braggin’ rights also belong to the elite 14-yr-old dam 237M, who proved to be fantastic through the years (9 sons indexed avg 109.8 & 3 daughters indexed avg 114.7 at WN - 8 sons indexed avg 107.9 & 3 daughters indexed avg 108.7 at YR)! He went on to be owned with Robert Simkin of Consort, AB.

7C was built like a brick, stout & broad, thick and long like his sire Sport Zeal 28Z! He inherited his curly red coat from his dam 210Z, a very deep, pretty cow with excellent feet and udder sublime. 7C was born only 78 lbs, but indexed above average at both weaning and yearling. Ultrasound gave him a Marbling index of 122!

Eye-catching, moderate-framed & powerful, this son of 137A was deep-bodied, full of muscle through quarters into the pants. He was well-marked, with well-shaped red testicles, red neck & threw many red eyes (some goggle). Progeny (many from 1st calf heifers) were born easily (males avg 80 lbs, females avg 74 lbs BW) then grew, thickening thru yearling & beyond! Dam 78A was an outstanding cow, wonderful in appearance and performance.

of Airdrie, AB. 77C has excelled as an RFI (Feed Efficiency) sire through progeny testing at GrowSafe/Vytelle testing sites. He is in the top 1% over their whole database (over 270,000 animals worldwide).

SERVICE SIRE

This Draftsman was a really attractive high performance heifer bull and all-around herd bull with depth of rib, thickness & pants. He was sired by our impressive voluminous 87W, plus - his dam, 67A, was an incredible Pete 203Y daughter. She had lots of volume, easy doing ability, awesome feet and a splendid flat udder with perfect position. 16D’s daughters have become excellent cows. Bonus: 16D ranks in the top 1% feed efficiency of all breeds in GrowSafe’s database (over 270,000).

Dr 603D was a heifer bull bred to do excellent work! His own birthweight was a remarkable 63 lb, yet was the top performing Fall bull at both weaning and yearling. He was built with lots of length and lots of frame, and had superb maternal strength and pedigrees both top & bottom. He was red - 100/80 eye pigmentation, red neck and red testicles.

Built like a brick, this stout bull was a high capacity 28Z son with great structure, a yellow to medium red mossy coat, 1 goggle eye, rock sound & tame to boot! He ranked one of the top yearling weights. Dam 120W was a shapely, moderate-sized, great-coated, feminine, performance cow (5 sons avg’d 111.2 WN index (& 108.8 YW index), 3 dtrs avg’d 110 WN index (& 107 YW index, ). 73C went on to be co-owned with Sheidaghan Angus of Maple Creek SK.

when sold to Nels & Terri Nixdorff, Airdrie AB. Creditor 77C has gone on to become one of the top1% feed-efficient sires of all breeds in GrowSafe’s database (270,000 head worldwide). 23E had a broad hip, depth & sported 1 goggle eye & red testicles, but concentrated on performance (as a youngster, he ranked 4/65 for WN (724 lbs) & 1/53 for YR (1134 lbs), 3.60 lbs/WPDA). His dam had an excellent pedigree, whose sons all excelled at performance.

32E was fabulous. Credited at birth with 86 lbs, goggle eyes, & investments by sire 18Z, 32E was deep with plenty of length, a big hip, & marked solid with a thick mossy haircoat & big hanging red testicles to ultimately breed more cows. Performance – he shone at the RFI Test (eating less, gaining well!) with 111 RFI EPD, then grew into 1887 lbs by Dec 2018 (ADG 3.51). His proud dam, 129X, is an elite cow – some offspring going purebred to: MN & Eureka, Ayrey Herefords, DW Herefords (Frasers) and Beery Land & Livestock, MT.

Corbiell's 47E was a well-built, balanced son of MW DAKOTA LAD 121Z, and an excellent dam sired by MVF 219T STD TURIN LAD 81Y (who averaged highest sale price in Corbiell’s dispersal). He has consistently produced top-quality cows with curly coats, lots of depth, good sound feet and good udders.

YV 77D had really good performance at both weaning and yearling, plus he did really well in RFI - a great fit for our herd which seems to excel in feed efficiency! He was a deep, thick, bull with a good haircoat... nice and wide up top! His progeny possessed lots of substance, a wide loin, with really good toplines and good haircoats. The dam of 77D has been a longstanding icon at the YV Ranch, where they value feed efficiency enough to install GrowSafe bunks for measurement.

was the high seller in our 2021 Annual Sale! Gopher sold to Gustafson Herefords in Kansas, who, a short time later, sold part ownership to Hirsche Herefords of Del Bonita, AB. I kept a semen interest and collected him before sending him south. 83G is doing well in all the herds. One of his sons, 21K, is a feature calf in this sale. See Here's a Hole-In-One to shoot for in this dispersal sale! We bred many heifers to this bull this past summer. He was a really nice stylish youngster with good conformation and a nice birthweight (84 lbs) and a weaning index of 119! His dam was a delightful first-calf heifer from a beautiful cow line - a solid background. I had used 12H for two years on heifers and now he's sold to Harvey Goetz from Bluffton, AB.

Born in 1976, 60H was the maternal grandsire of the great STANDRD LAD 656 4ET. He was thick, deep, and easy-keeping with a pedigree that many people admired, including us. Jim Hines of Marwayne, AB, offered us some doses of this bull, and we happily accepted. We used this semen with great success.

Our favourite bull was named the Southern Alberta Bull Spectacular “People’s Choice” winner in ‘02. His progeny also won the same award & other honours. 114L’s dam was a “Dam of Distinction” out of a “Dam of Great Distinction” out of our great foundation cow, 61N! Note 114L’s incredible females - femininity with thickness, volume, sound feet & easy keeping. Stunning good looks plus heavy WN & YR weights keeps 114L on top.

70N worked exceptionally well - stamping his calves much like himself at both Verbeek Herefords and in our herd. His offspring displayed the same length, thickness, depth, substance, good thick hair and correctness of their sire. 70N possessed great calving ease and outstanding maternal traits (not surprising considering he shared the same dam as 114L). He left attractive females, performance galore and strong carcass merits.

Here are historically great genetics brought back because of the exciting pedigree & calves that 13X has produced through the years. His reputation in Fowlie's herd, along with his use across many prominent purebred herds, stands on its own merit! We now have some semen to infuse this performance of times past with the modern cow. Unfortunately, the EPD system seems biased against old bulls but results are more than just numbers.

all these years, 21M is still a Trait Leader in Calving Ease & Maternal Calving Ease, along with Maternal Productivity Index and RFI (Feed Efficiency) and Marbling! 21M produces offspring with lots of vigor at birth & excellent performance that we & others are very proud of... In the Corbiell & Conway dispersals, the 21M progeny sold very well. Stanmore 21M was a moderate framed bull – our light birthweight specialist. His daughters keep on producing and producing with great conception and teats that hold up over time.

ULRICH HEREFORD RANCH SEMEN

To Whom it May Concern, Claresholm Veterinary Services Ltd. has been provinding veterinary services and consultation for over 40 years to the Ulrich Hereford Ranch. The majority of the service consists of breeding soundness evaluations of the bulls, pregnancy testing and herd health consultations. Health problems are minimized with a complete vaccination program for cows, calves and bulls.

Calves are vaccinated with the Zoetis SelectVac Gold Plus vaccine program (the comprehensive program to protect against respiratory disease and BVD) in the spring at pasture turn out and at weaning in the fall.

The replacement heifers receive Bovi-Shield Gold FP5-VL5 in the spring before breeding. The cow herd receives Bovi-Shield Gold FP5-VL5 prior to calving. Cows and heifers also receive a scour prevention vaccine annually as well as a clostridial vaccine.

The bulls recive Bovi-Shield Gold FP5-VL5 in the spring as a yearling and are boostered with this again prior to the sale as a 2 year old.

The females in the sale were preg tested in mid October to be pregnant. Peter has a copy of their suspected calving dates from the preg test. Claresholm Veterinary Services Ltd. is proud to be associated with the Ulirch Hereford Ranch and their cattle operation!

RFI - WHAT IS IT AND WHY SHOULD I CARE?

Residual Feed Intake is a measure of feed efficiency. One point in the scale represents 10 pounds of feed per year. A larger number on the scale indicates the animal is more efficient. It is important to balance this trait with gain, so the PWG EPD (Post Weaning Gain) identifies the difference between the WW & YW EPDs to keep growth in the analysis. Research has shown that identifying efficient animals translates into a huge savings for the cow/calf industry.

Ulrich Herefords’ Feed Efficiency!

In the first two years of CHA Residual Feed Intake (RFI) testing, over 600 purebred Hereford bulls were monitored, with an Ulrich bull capturing the top overall ranking! (The majority of the Ulrich’s other entries also ranked in the top half of those results.)

Ulrich Herefords produced 5 sires in the top 1% of the whole GrowSafe (Vytelle) database, and 13 sires in the top 10% (well over 270,000 animals worldwide).

WHAT IS AN EPD?

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are genetic predictions producers can use when making selection decisions. These values are available on performance animals from breed associations. It is important to understand you cannot compare EPDs between breeds, only within a breed. A buyer is always advised to use more than just the EPDs regardless of accuracy when making purchase decisions.

An Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is a measure of the genetic merit of an animal using relevant performance and pedigree information. EPDs are expressed in the units of measure. For example, birth weight is expressed in pounds, and rib-eye area is expressed in square inches.

EPDs come from performance data. Producers submit data on their cattle. From this data, researchers look at the differences between animals raised in the same environment (contemporary groups) and ascertain the portion of that difference that is due to genetics (heritability). Also included in this is how the different traits relate to each other and interact together (correlations). They can then directly compare genetic differences among animals using the pedigree information contained in the CHA and AHA registries. The result is a value that can be directly compared between animals and across environments, an EPD.

EPD’S USED IN THIS CATALOGUE

Calving Ease EPD (CE) - calculated using birth weight and calving ease score information. Calving ease EPDs represent the ease with which progeny of an animal are born to first calf heifers. The EPD is expressed as a percent probability, with a higher value representing calves with a higher probability of being born unassisted.

Birth Weight EPD (BW) - is an indicator of calving ease. Higher birth weight EPDs usually indicates more calving difficulty.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW) - reflects progeny growth differences up to 205-days.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW) - reflects progeny growth differences through to 365-days.

Milk EPD (Milk) - indicates the ability of a sire’s daughters to provide their calves with an environment that encourages growth from birth to weaning, through mothering ability and milk production. This EPD is expressed in the expected difference in pounds of calf at weaning.

Total Maternal EPD (TM) - also known as Milk + Growth, this EPD combines the milk EPD plus 1/2 the Weaning Weight EPD. It is expressed in pounds of calf weaned at 205-Days and combines the genetics for pre-weaning growth and the influence of the maternal environment on the weaning weight of the daughter’s progeny.

Maternal Calving Ease EPD (MCE) - represents the ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first calf heifers, when compared to daughters of other sires. The EPD is expressed as a percent probability, with a higher value representing daughters with a higher probability of unassisted calving.

COMPARABILITY OF EPD’S

EPDs from Hereford animals are directly comparable to other Herefords in North America, due to the inclusion of data from Canada and the United States. As well, it is important to remember that Hereford EPDs are NOT directly comparable to EPDs produced by different breeds, such as Angus or Simmental.

All EPD’s were quoted at time of writing, and weekly runs may have altered these numbers over time.
