2 • FURNITURE JOURNAL SEPTEMBER 2014 The Furniture Makers Design Award 2014 from the Craft Council of Ireland has been won by Michael Harris and his contemporary take on the classical writing desk. Mr Harris, a mature student studying for a BSc in Furniture Design at GMIT Letterfrack in Ireland, made the Digital Desk 21 with the help of surface materials distributor IDS. Sheets of the Hanex solid surfacing material were donated to create a coloured inlaid worksurface in vibrant Orange, one of the 80 colours and designs exclusively distributed by IDS. Hanex is a durable and user-friendly surface with a smooth matt finish and its ability to be seamlessly jointed and thermoformed means it offers endless creative possibilities for interior fittings and furniture.
A new 16-page full colour brochure guide to Timbmet’s range of veneered boards is now available. Detailing the standard stock range as well as the full range of Decopan and Finsa boards which are available to order, the brochure also supplies information on selecting the best panel for a particular application - as the appearance of the veneer sheet is dependent on the way the wood is sliced and how the pieces are joined together, there are suggestions for choosing the right slicing and jointing techniques. business news The Hull-based furniture manufacturer Kingstown Furniture is banking on quality German hardware as the Estelle bedroom range will become its first to feature sliding doors. Design director Dave Frampton believes that the Top Line M mechanism from Hettich gives wardrobes an upmarket feel and the crowds that saw the prototypes at the NEC this year agreed with him. Kingstown trucks carry images of the sliding doors, which will now be installed by professional fitters. Estelle wardrobes feature membrane-pressed PVC fronts in widths of 1.5, 2 and 2.6m in a variety of finishes and with mirror or glass centre panels. The more traditional painted collections will retain hinged doors to suit their style but the Helena distressed painted range will upgrade to Quadro drawer runners from Hettich when it is launched by Kingstown this summer.
Vero Software, a UK-based world leader in CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) software has been acquistioned by Hexagon AB. A global provider of design, measurement and visualisation technologies, Hexagon is based in Sweden and said that its software offerings are strengthened by the acquistion as the newly developed MMS (metrology planning software) can now include CAM (manufacturing planning software), moving closer to integrating all data and processes across the manufacturing lifecycle. Vero Software, whose brands include Alphacam, Cabinet Vision, Edgecam, Radan, SURFCAM, VISI and WorkNC, provides solutions for programming and controlling machine tools to achieve manufacturing efficiencies with high-quality output. Hexagon believes that Vero’s unique suite of manufacturing software will deliver “even high levels of productivity to our customers, saving them time, money and resources”.

The management team of SGE Papier of Surteco, which combines all the group’s paper activities, has been completed with the addition of Ralf Schuler. He will be responsible for finances, controlling, accounting, IT and human resources in concert with Dieter Baumanns (marketing, sales and décor development), Reinhold Affhüppe (technology) and Dr Gereon Schäfer (chairman). Mr Schuler, above, is expected to successfully continue the solid course prepared by his predecessor Dr Dambrowski with the integration of Süddekor in the Surteco group, said Dr Schäfer.
This year’s SICAM trade fair continues to grow, after reaching 2013’s level of confirmed participating companies with still 4 months to go. This is seen as an encouraging signal of revival after the turmoil of the furniture, components and accessories markets in recent years and SICAM believes assessments can now allow some more optimism. Although held at Pordenone in Italy, the October exhibition has global support and, for the first time at SICAM 2014, new operators from North African countries will be present, raising the already high number of international operators of the furniture industry to more than ninety foreign countries.

14 looks set to be the most important edition of the manufacturers’ national show for years. It’s not just a matter of size, although the show totally fills its three NEC halls and takes its place as one of the largest UK trade shows. More important is the diversity and balance this show has achieved with an exhibitor list spanning the great names in machinery, components and materials from across the world. Readers of Furniture Journal are likely to be just daring to feel optimistic about prospects for the industry. The UK economy is ahead of anything happening in the Euro Zone and there is a new appreciation of the importance of manufacturers. There is a general cry to build more houses, with political parties seeking to outdo
each other in the ambition of their construction programme. With that comes more construction work in providing an infrastructure for those houses. As we know, furniture demand tracks construction pretty closely so we can all see a solidly based recovery, maybe even a boom ahead. Despite the need to take a day away from the office or factory, it’s further good news for manufacturers that W14 is scheduled for the autumn (5-8 October at the NEC Birmingham). For those in search of new machinery, upgrading after some years of ‘making do’ or interested in the latest production techniques W14 is a must running machinery and the expertise of an entire industry at your disposal. The decision of Biesse to return to exhibiting at the show has further

Big names like SCM Group and Homag will be exhibiting their latest machinery - and most exhibitors will have experts on hand to answer all questions (inset).
enhanced an already stunning machinery content - a huge Biesse stand in hall 6 sees the company show in style this autumn. With Homag, SCM, RW, Felder, Daltons-Wadkin and JJ Smith leading the machinery who’s who in the halls, this is a feast of technology - much of which operates throughout the exhibition. W14 delights in its ability to showcase these big names, confident in their product and keen to meet the market. Now the components and materials market has recognised the potential in the UK an impressive line-up of product is in the halls at W14. Unlike previous years, you don’t need to take a trip to a German or Italian exhibition
to see the best. And a read down the exhibitor list reveals that the show delivers on its promise to offer everything for the joinery and furniture manufacturer… making it an incredible proposition and a must-see event for anyone seriously planning to exploit better market conditions. The prediction that W14 was going to develop rapidly this edition came about when global market leaders Blum decided to show to UK manufacturers. Blum’s presence at the show is part of a trend which has seen a rapid take-up by materials and components suppliers. A glance at the floor plan shows significant players in all areas of supply to furniture and
joinery manufacturers will be ready to meet you at W14. Indeed, the ‘meeting’ aspect is right at the heart of all exhibitions. Face to face contact between supplier and customer usually produces exciting developments. Exhibitions are really the only media in which the instant two-way exchange is possible. Seeing and feeling the products, watching the demonstrations and applying them to your own business. Finding people you can do business with and stimulating your own thought process. All of this is peculiar to an exhibition, benefitting your business in many different ways. www.w14exhibition.com

Katthult over Grey 1977, Cranberry, Dakar and Fern.
julian on trends T
hinking in terms of volume production, what do UK furniture manufacturers look for in a woodgrain décor? Something new, not too radical but very realistic in the way it looks and feels. Trends are more colourful in terms of wood prints. There is more colour play in the print so it co-ordinates with unicolours. The colour in the unicolour brings out the colour in the woodgrain print. The décor manufacturers are getting ever better at producing realistic optical features. I believe the vast majority of wood prints will have an optical feature to them once consumers realise how good they can be but it’s taking a little time to filter through the retailers.
Woodgrain décors in general seem to be evolving faster than any other décor trend yet Beeches and Oaks still refuse to stand aside. With more optimism in the market, is it not time for manufacturers to try something different?
89069.indd 9
Oak-based décors have dominated while beeches have been dying away for the last four or five years but species are becoming less important than the story behind them. Printers are giving names, creating a story behind the effect, such as knots, planks, etc. It doesn’t matter what the species is. The effect matters and the impression of the final piece.
Electric blue 1922 over Iconic.
If you were set the task of designing a fitted furniture range that was vibrant and different but which had a realistic chance of volume sales in the UK, which décors would you consider? I’d probably still look at oaks because they are so well known and I’d combine them with unicolours. In the UK you have to be careful using combinations of colours. At the moment, the natural tones greens, greys, greeny-greys, Dakar and Mussel - are the most popular. Ruby reds and rich colours such as petrol blues can also form nice features but

it’s a bit more of a decision to buy a piece of furniture with more definite colours in it. It’s all about confidence in the consumer and knowing how to use it with the interior you're putting it into.
acceptance here has been comparatively low. It’s quite a statement to make. You have to understand how to use them. The designs coming through now with optical features and natural look are better than exaggerated features.
In the last few years we’ve seen the appearance of an eclectic mix of exotic décors, first in ultra high gloss and latterly in mattes and more realistic finishes. Where do you see the future for exotic décors? Exotics are only being used as feature décors in kitchens or bedrooms in a striking way. Strong, striking woodgrains are being replaced by oaks and softer woodgrains with unicolours. They offer far more scope for designing and co-ordinating.
Where is the main focus for development in the woodgrain décor sector at the moment? It is very much on optical surfaces. I anticipate that the vast majority of surfaces will need to be as realistic as possible to stand any chance in the market at present.
Heavy rustic sanded timbers entered the market to a great fanfare a couple of years ago. To what extent have these been taken up by manufacturers in the UK? In the furniture industry, not to any great extent. Saw cuts are very popular in mainland Europe but
89069.indd 10
What is Decorative Panels Group offering that’s new and exciting in woodgrain décors? The range we are developing has optical surfaces - a whole new collection with the latest woodgrain patterns. They have a colour palette and an optical surface which are not over-emphasised but are as close as we can get to a real surface. There’s a beech in the collection, oaks, light-coloured woodgrains we haven’t seen for a while (such as whites and creamy colours) which work well with
unicolours. There are eight designs in the new collection but we have yet to name it. Is there anything else which DP Group could offer to furniture manufacturers who are unable or unwilling to escape from the tried and tested diehards in woodgrain décor collections? There are always new introductions which progress with the development of technology. Even standard products are significantly better than they were a few years ago. There’s quite a difference between décors from years ago. Alongside our new collection we are bringing out a collection of unicolours which co-ordinates well with the new collection and many of our others. They complement our existing ranges. ood panel and laminate manufacturer Egger UK is following up its most successful product launch with the introduction of a number of new décors and textures over the next twelve months. Its ST27 painted wood-effect boards, launched in January, were an immediate hit with furniture manufacturers looking for something that is virtually indistinguishable from the real thing but at a significantly lower cost. Available in ten neutral solid colours with an underlying oakgrain texture, as well as a paintinggrade option, the sector quickly embraced the use of the new product range for carcasses, end panels, plinths and doors. An extension to Egger’s market-leading ZOOM Collection sees the appearance of 23 new décors and six completely new textures as the company continues to lead the way in creating panels
that even experts struggle to tell apart from a solid wood or veneer. Additionally, the manufacturer’s massive investment in synchronised pore technology where the décor and surface texture are perfectly aligned brings three new varieties into the ZOOM Collection. Each has its own unique character from subtle and elegant to rustic. Egger believes texture will remain key to new product development as increasinglyrealistic finishes coupled with MFC’s added advantages of colour consistency over the lifetime of the furniture, wear resistance, low maintenance and ease of manufacture become even more widelyrecognised. The Feelwood Elegance ST27 texture demonstrates the beauty and subtleness of nature whilst displaying a modern and sophisticated feel. Feelwood Nature ST28 uses

on new décors knots and planking to bring you closer to nature. The natural feel of the matt texture is paired with the grain of ‘Gladstone Oak’, to emphasise the sandblasted character of this décor. Ideal for large applications thanks to its large grain pattern, Feelwood Ambiance ST29 texture is provided with an air of grandeur by the mattgloss finish. The six new décors in Brushed Wood ST36 unite an iregular and very deep texture with a matt appearance, achieving the look of deeply brushed solid wood. The striking and industrial feel of Ceramic ST87 texture combines the rusty, aged appearance with a ceramic texture to achieve a contemporary, used look. arah Maier, the architect, furniture designer and owner of a 104-yearold joinery near Stuttgart, is known for combining unusual veneer with other brilliantly coloured material to produce completely practical furniture. This simple and ingenious piece of furniture is the newest development in the Sarah Maier collection. Using Poisonwood veneer in her Highboard HB1, Sarah has skilfully used the pattern in the veneer as it tapers at one corner and then broadens, flowing to the opposing corner. The individual veneer leaves were carefully matched piece by piece to create a fascinating veneer figure. Instead of cutting away the existing worm holes, she filled them with a light-coloured bonding material to perfect the lively appearance of the veneer. Poisonwood, otherwise known as Caribbean Rosewood, can irritate human skin up to two weeks after the
tree has been harvested. After processing, however, it poses no risk and can be used for furniture of all types. Pure passion is reflected in the wood’s rustic and fiery look. Sarah searched the veneer warehouse at Schorn & Groh in Karlsruhe personally in order to find this very special wood. The veneer manufacturer has more than 140 species of wood and around five million square metres of high quality veneer in stock. In addition to all commercially available woods, Schorn & Groh’s portfolio includes several FSC and PEFC-certified flitches, burl veneers and other rare species - such as Poisonwood. The Schorn & Groh Team is more than willing to advise customers and potential customers in the rooms adjoining the veneer warehouse. stunning collection of exciting new décors is available in the Renolit Alkoren and Renolit Covaren 3D stock range. The recently launched 2014 Renolit Highlights Collection Binder showcases almost 60 new additions to the global 3D stock range as well as 20 of the recent 2013 décor introductions. All these décors and many more are collected in the 2014 edition of the 3D Stock Range brochure that features a comprehensive guide to the 234 different Renolit Covaren and Renolit Alkoren décors now available. Three focus areas are prominent this year: The delicate feel of satin, matt and supermatt surfaces is a developing focus, as can be seen in the Coffee Satin (left) and Light Grey Suedette Matt (below).
• Oak The promise of nature and rustic romance ensures that the trend for oak continues. • Matt Three levels of matt are possible, from the shimmering, silky lustre of Satin, to the supersmooth Supermatt, and the velvety texture of tactile Suedette Matt. • High Gloss The range of solid colours and metallic prints has been increased by 26 new colours, from neutrals to light and dark greys, reds, bluegreens, yellow and darker browns to present a total of 38 high gloss options altogether. or a long time, one-component, reactive PU dispersions have represented the state of technology in the lamination of 3D formed furniture panels. Using this as a starting point, Jowat AG has developed Jowapur ® 150.93, an innovative adhesive which provides additional advantages for the manufacturer. Free of mixing errors and offering simplified delivery and warehousing, one-component adhesives do away with cleaning of the mixing unit and of any pot life considerations, providing greater production reliability. Along with all of these, Jowapur ® 150.93 offers additional advantages: the low heat reactivation of approximately 55°C in the glue line still allows for a sufficiently high crosslinking density of the dispersion, so that the stringent demands of the kitchen industry are
met with regard to temperature and moisture resistance levels. The excellent performance in spray application also leads to a very even adhesive coating the prerequisite of a smooth surface when high gloss foils are processed. The initial strength immediately after pressing and cooling of the parts reaches a higher level compared with many other adhesives enabling downline trimming operations to be carried out within a short time without visible foil shrinkage at the edges. Jowapur ® 150.93 laminates all standard types of foils, exerting less stress on thermoplastic foils whilst offering an improved processing window when manufacturing 3dimensional formed furniture panels. For more information on Jowapur ® 150.93 call Jowat UK on 01782 565265 or visit www.jowat.co.uk

twin schelli The installation and commissioning of the FM-H 430 took two Schelling engineers six days. During that time, the saw was changed to suit the Panelco factory from a left-hand to a right-hand infeed. The saw has driven roller tracks with a hydraulic scissor lift table. At a later date a new Industrial PC was installed with updated MCS Evolution software, giving the FM-H 430 greater processing power. Both machines are connected to the office HPO optimisation software where all cutting patterns are produced and sent to the machines. The operator only needs to select and start the right program.

Panelco’s Schelling experience started when the company bought a second-hand machine a few years ago. Build quality, reliability and exceptional levels of customer service from Schelling UK made the choice an obvious one when Panelco needed a second saw.
P
aul Brammer speaks animatedly about the two Schelling beam saws at Panelco’s Stoke site and of the “first class” service the company has experienced from Schelling UK. Panelco’s association with Schelling dates back before Operations Manager, Paul, started in January 2013 but he knows the history of the second-hand FM-H 430 Panelco bought from Armitage in 2007: “We wanted to buy a Schelling because it’s such a solid machine - if a bracket needs to be 5mm thick, Schelling will make it 10mm thick - but we wanted to ensure it would be moved and installed correctly, so we bought it on condition that Schelling UK would do all the work,” he says. “Markus and his team found a machine about five miles away. First it was installed in our Berry Hill site, then here in 2011. It’s been moved twice. It’s running 10-12 hours a day and it’s very, very efficient.”
89069.indd 25
It’s no real surprise that when Panelco wanted to expand its operations with a second saw, Paul turned to Schelling for a new machine. He describes the build quality as “bomb-proof” and has nothing but praise for the service Schelling UK provides: “From specking up the machine to delivery, everyone at Schelling gives you confidence that they know what they are doing. We know our products and we knew we needed a machine that would cope with MFC, plywood, MDF, OSB - a wide range. But we also wanted a machine that would cope with thin, bowed hardboard. Schelling pointed out things we were not aware of and guided us towards things we needed to think about, such as what did and didn’t need automating and how the numbers stacked up. They looked at the whole operation. We had more than ten meetings before we placed the order.”

Above. “The pit saves masses of time. We load MFC to a book height of 5-700mm but when we’re loading ply, we’re feeding nearly a metre. With the pit I don’t need to break the pack down.” Below. The powered scissor lift takes the pack from the powered infeed roller track. Right. Heavyweight pushers and (inset) board separators simplify transport, even of thin materials.
The new machine, commissioned in May 2014, is an FH8 430/220 Auto with additional features added to cope with Panelco’s specific requirements. To the rear of the machine on the left is a powered infeed roller track feeding a powered roller scissor lift to handle stack heights of up to 1000mm. A pit had to be built specially to accommodate the scissor lift but Paul is delighted with the time-savings Schelling’s idea has provided. “The pit saves masses of time,” he enthuses. “We load MFC to a book height of 5-700mm but when we’re loading ply, we’re feeding nearly a metre. With the pit, we don’t need to break the pack down. The scissor table drops it down and loads it onto the bed. That was Schelling’s suggestion. We asked them what they could do to eradicate problems and one by one they knocked them down.” Also with thin materials in mind, Schelling added a thin panel-feeding device for materials of up to 6mm and nine clamps, two extra in the cross-cut area. While feeding a panel, cutting of a different panel is possible, which improves productivity by 15% due to the separate push-off unit which includes thin panel feeding. “Schelling also recommended a turntable,” says Paul. “It’s proved to be a real time-saver. It means we can do head cuts without manual turning. They also fitted our machine with a hard chromed table top which reduces the likelihood of scratching when we’re
89069.indd 26
cutting gloss boards. There’s a lot of weight on the bottom board in a 144mm book and this really helps it slide without damage.” Other items in the specification include a post-forming saw and saw blade deflection monitoring. But it’s perhaps in the tables where another good example of the service customers might expect from Schelling can be found: Panelco’s FH8 was fitted with a 700 x 2100mm fixed, high pressure air table with end rollers and three similarlysized moving high pressure air tables, also with end rollers. After installation of the saw, Paul and his operators mentioned something they’d come across during operation concerning the gap between the tables. “Schelling was on it straight away,” says Paul, clearly impressed. “They’re making something special to slide panels up and down without scratching. They really are fantastic about providing solutions to problems. In fact, they’ve been fantastic from the start. When we were building the base, we put down a 700mm concrete pad to cut vibration to zero and improve blade life. Andy Hepworth came in twice just to check the base with me.” In operation, Paul confirms there have been “no issues at all with the saw since installation”. “It’s working 10-12 hours a day and it’s very efficient.” To find out how Schelling UK could help your production with a new or preowned machine call 01937 586340.

ive-axis specialists Maka Systems’ new PE90, soon to be launched at W14, seems set to create a new benchmark in flexibility. Designed and built for heavy timber engineering, the new PE90 provides all the rugged reliability and functionality of the original HC57 and heavyweight PM270 models, yet it’s faster and more flexible. Perfect for single operator use, the new PE90 is equipped with extremely flexible clamping solutions for fast setup of even the most demanding, complex joinery parts. Learning curves are remarkably short, allowing users of the new PE90 to respond faster to customer demands and provide shorter development times for complex, oneoff products. Also, to aid single operator users, Maka offers numerous simple devices for handling heavy parts - a prime example is the turnover
device for heavy doors, shown above on an 8-metre PE90. The latest PE90 provides uncompromising strength and power. Built to metalworking standards, it’s equipped with 12 or 20kW spindle options. Even the clamping devices are built to accept higher loads. The recently re-introduced Maka spindle, well known for its longevity and performance in heavy operations, now includes four sensors, a miniencoder and vibration monitoring and is available with HSK A63 and F63 nose ends to meet an even wider range of operational requirements. Made ‘in house’, it means consistent high quality and quick turnaround with lower cost servicing. ith business showing a definite boost over the last six months and woodworkers now prepared to open their cheque books more readily, we are very optimistic about our upcoming appearance at W14,” says Matt Pearce, sales director of TM Machinery Sales. At Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre in October, TM will demonstrate the latest machines from the Swiss-made Striebig range of vertical panel saws and the Italian Viet range of artisan wide belt sanders. To be exhibited for the first time in the UK will be the remarkable new Striebig 4D machine - a revolutionary development which offers intelligent cut optimisation, even of complicated panel and strip cutting work. The 4D, which can optimise and cut a full panel without the operator needing to rehandle it once it is loaded, will be shown alongside existing popular models from the Striebig range.
For the first time since being appointed as UK agents by Biesse (Viet’s parent company), TM will also be showing machines from the highly efficient and economical Viet artisan range of wide belt sanders. “Having the latest models on the stand will remind the trade just how superb these Viet sanders are,” says Matt Pearce. “Appearing at Britain’s leading woodworking equipment exhibition every two years has become an important part of our overall marketing strategy. We know from our experience at W12 that W14 will give us the opportunity to meet a large number of woodworkers who we would otherwise find it difficult to reach,” says Matt. “With the new 4D on the stand plus other popular Striebig saws as well as the Viet sanders, we are expecting a hectic time.” For information call TM Machinery Sales on 0116 271 7155, email sales@tmservices.co.uk or visit stand number 8F610 at W14.

will be on display. Look out for the improved robust grain impregnation for prolonged life, fewer sanding defects and less grain breakage. The high gloss solutions kit will also be demonstrated on the stand. This offers a quick, simple and cost-effective method of achieving a high gloss on a range of lacquered surfaces and solid surface materials. The set contains everything required for ‘the complete solution’. Also on the stand will be Mirka’s Ultimax wide belts with ‘Selective Coating™ Technology’ which are designed to prevent clogging even during the most demanding of operations. In addition, Mirka’s new abrasive film product, Microstar, designed for mattening and paint rectification of top- and clear coat applications, will be on display in belt format. Included on the stand will be the Kundig Brilliant-2 1350 REd-L which has found favour with top furniture makers for its accurate calibration, sanding of veneers using the electronic segmental pad and sanding of lacquered surfaces perfect for high gloss finish. The Brilliant series of machines are available as a single head machine or with multiple heads and at least one sanding head mounted to give a shear cut across the surface, eliminating the inherent flaws associated with more traditional sanding heads. From its traditional Premium range Kundig will show the 1100mm wide twin belt machine which features a fixed bed for long term accuracy and a generous 200mm working height.
Also on display will be edge sanding machines from the Basiq single-sided machine to the Uniq, a machine which can be worked from either side with one being for veneered edges and the other for solid wood. The Kundig UniqS has an integrated feed system to ensure the best quality of finish and is available in a specification to sand lacquered edges. Both the Uniq and Uniq-S machines have motorised tilting of the abrasive to 45 degrees, motorised raising and lowering of the 200mm sanding head and programmable oscillation to maximise the use of the abrasive. Don’t miss out on the live demonstrations, aimed at showing how sanding even the most demanding surfaces can easily be achieved with a Kundig. Details, call 0845 833 0565.

Convinced by “altogether better build quality” and swayed by IMA’s single head CNC corner rounding unit with automatic setup, BA Components has invested in two IMA Novimat edgebanders for its Doncaster and Cookstown factories.

e were so impressed with the build quality of the IMA we bought one for our Doncaster factory and one for Cookstown,” says Martin Towler, BA Components’ Doncaster-based Production Manager. “We looked at new and we looked at used. The guys who sold second-hand machines recommended IMA and when you compare different edgebanders side by side you can see why. Everything from the gears to the frame is heavier; the build quality is just way better than anything else we saw and we wanted a machine that would still be doing a good job in ten years’ time.” The edgebander in BA’s Doncaster factory is a single-sided IMA Novimat G80/440/R3, bought new through Leicestershire-based IMA UK. It was specified, designed and custom built at
IMA’s design and manufacturing facility in Northern Germany and caters exactly for BA’s requirements. “We were not wanting to produce cheap panels, or high volume products,” continues BA’s Operations Director, Ian Cohen. “We wanted a flexible machine that was capable of producing high quality edgebanded panels for the higher end of the contract market. It’s applying 1mm high gloss edgings, solid edgings, Senoplast - bespoke and small runs. We needed quality not huge capacity. That’s why we opted for a single-sided machine rather than a double. We can do small batches easily on this machine.” Although a typical component for BA is 55mm x 600mm, the Novimat, which is the flagship of the IMA range, is frequently called upon to finish 2.4m x 900mm, though it’s with fast change smaller panel work that it really excels.

Martin Towler: “The KFA unit really attracted us. With just the one CNC head we can do corner rounding and the setup is automatic. Normally you’d need four heads and four set-ups.”
Both the sliding infeed table and the special top pressure design (with 45mm lever spacing) confirm this is a machine that’s been built to handle small panels. Although zero glue line work wasn’t BA’s priority, the custom configuration includes edge pre-milling with two motors which creates a superb edge with minimal glueline thickness. Panel edge blowing removes any dust from the core of the board prior to heating of the panel edge and a variable infra red heater controls the open time of BA’s chosen PUR adhesive. The quick release IMA glue pots are easy to change and can be stored overnight in a deep freeze, minimising waste, while a servo tape feed and servo guillotine ensure minimal tape waste. Top and bottom rough milling is followed by profile milling with up to three different profiles that can be changed automatically in a panel gap if required. However, it’s the IMA patented KFA corner rounding unit which really sold BA’s Martin Towler on the IMA: “With just the one CNC head we can do corner rounding and the setup is
89069.indd 51
automatic,” he says. “Normally you’d need four heads and four set-ups.” IMA’s KFA unit can be equipped with up to three built-in programs enabling it to perform vertical milling and corner rounding at up to 30m/min. Following the KFA is a multi profile scraper unit with automatic change for up to three profiles. Equipped with a duo knife system, it’s designed to create perfectly scraped profiles, even with difficult edging materials. Completing the configuration are a two-knife flat glue line scraper, which removes excess glue and cuts through surface protection films to create the perfect joint finish, and a four-mop buffing unit for the ultimate finish. “We’re getting book performance and the quality is very good,” confirms Martin. “We’re happy with the glueline and the service from IMA UK has been first rate. We’re really pleased.” Recommendations don’t get a lot better than that do they? For information from IMA call 0116 243 2181. For details of BA’s products call 01302 890555 or 028 8676 4600.

tkinsons Joinery is a traditional architectural joinery company based in Lancashire. The team at Atkinsons found administration a frustrating experience, until they discovered Powered Now, a new mobile app that takes the pain out of paperwork for tradesmen. Owner John Atkinson explains, “Although I was working most weekends and evenings with the admin, quotes could easily slip through the cracks and no one likes losing work. Powered Now has made life much easier for the team here; everything is in a single place and most importantly it’s easy to see what’s been sent, and to whom!” He adds, “One of the by-products of using the software has been a significant cost saving adding up to about £5,000 a year. Previously quotes and invoices were manually printed and posted to customers and so, by eliminating postage and printing costs (as well as the time required to create them), this helps make everyone, including customers, happy. “But the main benefit for our small company is in gaining quality time with family that’s previously been spent quoting for potential jobs.” Powered Now is software designed specifically for woodworkers and other trade professionals. Running on an iPad or iPhone, it computerises all
your administrative tasks including customer communication, quoting, invoicing and taking payment (by card or PayPal). All information is stored centrally online and backed up whenever there’s a wi-fi connection. Therefore, even if you lose or damage your device, you can transfer everything to the new one instantly and nothing is lost. omag UK has always been a staunch supporter of the UK's major woodworking show, this year designated W14. “An exhibition like W14 is so important for the industry,” enthuses Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for Homag UK. “The UK is home to some of the finest furniture, panel and joinery companies and the show is a wonderful opportunity for us as an industry to give these manufacturers the chance to see all the latest innovations under one roof.” “The Homag Group’s theme this year is Growing with Homag and it is so much more than just a clever marketing tagline,” continues Simon. “The success and size of the Group is, in some ways, its own worst enemy because smaller woodworking businesses can easily fall into the trap of thinking that Homag Group machinery is beyond their reach. In reality, that couldn’t be further from the truth. The German parent company has invested millions of Euros developing
a range of machinery, from edgebanders and saws to CNC processing centres and sanding machines, designed specifically for start-up and small woodworking businesses. “Grouped in Germany under the Practive banner, they provide cutting edge technology, precision and quality at affordable prices. And it means that almost any company can enjoy the undoubted benefits of partnering with the global market leader. To help further, we can offer financial support via Homag Finance. This service enables companies to invest in machinery using finance packages specifically developed for their needs and we’ll have experts on hand at the show to discuss such deals. “These days it is so important for producers to be able to manufacture quality products consistently and at competitive prices, whether bespoke or mass produced items. To do this you need to have precision engineered

Adds Area Manager, Giacomo Bertoni, “We’re always pushing forward and evolving our products. With 60 years of experience behind us, not only do we offer a fantastic range of machines that is competitively priced, we also offer stability and assurance that our machines are designed to the highest standards.” So what does Vitap offer British manufacturers? Gerd Ney, Managing Director of Vitap’s newly appointed UK distributor affirms, “Vitap is a leading European machinery manufacturer and thanks to its knowledge and expertise in designing and building drilling machines since 1954, its current range of machines offers the small businessman unparalleled results.

ixty years of history lie behind the name Vitap. Founded shortly after the Second World War by two Italian engineers, Pietro Tanzini and Franco Viciani, the fledgling company began by making grinding machines. In 1957 the first mechanical drill with one head emerged and this was quickly followed by other models. Soon, a multiheaded drill made its debut and tentative forays began into export markets. Today, with a solid reputation in CNC working centres, straight and contour edgebanders, nesting CNC machines and through-feed boring machines, Vitap exports its technology to over 80 countries spanning all seven continents. Vitap’s President, Franco Viciani, is rightly proud of his company’s achievements: “Research and technology, our company know-how and experience are here to be shared with all our associates in such a way as to give them concrete

“The introduction of Vitap’s CNC operated machines really is the icing on the cake. We are selling Vitap machines on a weekly basis and it is fast becoming one of our major product lines. Our customers like the fact that a Vitap is a simple machine to use and, whilst it comes in at a fraction of the price when compared with many CNC machines, it can achieve the same, if not better, results than a more expensive model.” “We originally worked with Vitap 20 years ago,” continues Gerd. “We recently revisited its range and soon realised that Vitap was creating machines that were incomparable with anything else on the market. Their build quality, overall efficiently and affordability certainly got our attention.” Through Ney Ltd, a wide range of Vitap machines will be available, starting with entry level machines like the 27T semi-automatic boring machine and concluding with the advanced N2 and N3 CNC nesting machines. The Vitap
Eclipse, a semi-automatic edgebander for small and large panels, is ideal for smaller furniture manufacturers and fits perfectly both with Ney’s aim to champion the cause of the smaller manufacturer and with other edgebanders currently offered by Ney Ltd. Also supplementing the Ney portfolio will be machines like the Bridge. Launched two years ago, it adds a new option in CNC point-to-point boring to Ney’s already expansive range. Other machines like the recently launched Point 3 CNC high-speed point-to-point boring machine, equipped with a new loading and unloading system, show just how accessible the latest technology is through Ney Ltd. Says Gerd Ney, “Having over 60 years of experience in the market has helped Vitap develop its designs and fine tune its product line. Vitap has certainly impressed us and we know it will impress others too.” For more details call 024 7630 8100.

challenging cades H
ow do you design and install a new dust extraction system, stripping out the old system and completing the installation with no disruption to the workplace, all within a two-week installation window? That’s exactly the challenge Decorative Panels Furniture in Teesside gave to Cades: strip out an existing 30-yearold Moldow negative pressure filter system and replace it with a brand new system, including a totally automated and controlled Moldow Energy Management System - and do it within a two-week time slot. The Cades team immediately set about assessing the site, checking for
89069.indd 61
access restrictions, space and areas that could present a challenge or any disruption. Then came the task of designing a solution. But where do you start with such a challenge? Steve Rhodes, Managing Director at Cades, takes up the story: “The Cades approach was to design and build offsite, co-ordinating build times with the availability of specialist transport maximising the work at our end, removing the disruption for the customer whilst ensuring that the challenging site access restrictions were completely resolved. The strip out and installation went smoothly and we achieved the deadline.”

The Decorative Panels Furniture installation took two weeks and demanded close co-operation with Moldow, Cades’ partners in the UK. Right. A new guide from Steve Rhodes.
The new Moldow MHL negative pressure filter system with carriage bag cleaning will run 24 hours, 7 days a week meeting strict noise guidelines set by the Local Authority. The total system volume is 180,000m 3 /hr and it is connected to eight existing and new duct lines. Four Moldow inverter-driven 75kW extraction fans were housed in specially designed sound enclosures and the whole system was made with ‘easy access’ in mind for maintenance. The installation employs a return air system and provides automatic summer/ winter settings. It is fully automated and controlled. A Moldow Energy Management System provides up to 60% savings on running costs. Says Steve Rhodes, “At Cades we offer a no compromise on specification approach with the right solution at the right price. Dust or fume extraction needs the right design and specification
89069.indd 62
to work at optimum levels and to do the job for which the system has been installed. We design to maximise the dust or fume extraction performance, tailoring the design to deliver the right solution first time, every time. “We know how to design, specify and install whilst also knowing how to service and maintain to extend the life of your components. We pride ourselves on finding the right technical solution. “We are the UK partners of Moldow and as such we can offer a market leading energy management system which meets stringent air quality requirements both for your workforce and your neighbours.“
“Specifying and installing the wrong dust or fume extraction system is much more common than you may anticipate, and much more expensive to rectify than you may think too,” adds Steve, who has published a guide entitled Costly mistakes when buying a dust extraction system... and how to avoid them. “We are regularly called out to troubleshoot system performance, scalability challenges and a host of other issues on systems that are simply not working properly, or up to the job. Our design team will design and specify a solution that is future-proof in terms of technical capability and performance. Why trust someone who would change their specification to meet your budget, instead of designing the right solution for your business?” Call Cades on 0845 838 6166 or visit www.cadesltd.co.uk

hen it comes to finishing systems, spray lines, automatic spray equipment and innovative drying systems, there are few companies with the experience or the reputation of Schubert Technical Services Ltd. It was a combination of all of these factors - and the levels of personal service associated with the name Schubert - which led Moores Furniture Group to consult Schubert Finishing Systems when it needed a new spray facility and automatic polishing line specifically for high gloss kitchen components. The recently commissioned spray shop installation at Moores will create four additional spraying stations and further enhance the company’s high gloss panels spray capacity by 1,500 panels per week. Keeping dust out of the spray shop is essential, especially when working with high gloss. The extract fans, all inverter driven via pressure drop differential sensors, ensure a contamination-free environment in the spray shop, giving a perfect dust-free finish. An air input system filters heated factory air from
biomass boiler heat exchangers and diffuses this directly into the spray shop, providing constant warm, clean air for the spray/gel processes. A Schubox gas catalytic drying system combines with the large spray shop to cure the solvent PU in a record time of 2 hours, compared to 10-12 hours Moores had become accustomed to. With a heated paint mix room, anti-spark quiet fan sets, ducting to atmosphere, 1000lux white/blue lighting throughout and fully adjustable spray partition walls, Moores now have a top-notch spray shop! After spraying, all the high gloss panels then need polishing and buffing. Schubert Technical Services provided an Emme Elle LBA automatic polishing line which is fitted with a vacuum table to secure differently-sized panels to the bed of the machine. The specification also includes automatic storage and spraying of polishing compound and wax additive for each of the two processes (polishing and buffing). The bed of the machine is a huge 3200 x 1350mm, so even the largest of panels can be loaded as multiples. The machine will happily

f a perfect finish accept different thicknesses of panels, as the height of the machine can be altered automatically to suit. When loaded with product, the central head of the machine moves over the painted panels, applying an exact dose of polishing compound liquid and then a series of rotating, tumbling, dense cotton mops rotate evenly across the surface. The key to ensuring a perfect finish and that the edges of the panels remain undamaged is the unique loading and securing system of the LBA machine. Paul Robinson, Manufacturing Engineer, says, “From the request to tender through to post installation, Schuberts have always been helpful and have responded quickly to any questions. The installation was one of the smoothest I can remember. The whole facility has given us the extra capacity we need to meet our customers’ demands along with a two-day reduction in the manufacturing lead time. The polishing machine has also given a quality imp-rovement through better consistency and a significant capacity increase.” To find out what Schubert Technical Services Ltd could do for you call 01226 360900 or visit www.schuberts.co.uk

The new Loroch PowerStar 850 is the latest in Vollmer’s armoury of circular saw blade processing machines, another flexible CNC controlled machine developed for the precision processing of saw blades from 400 to 850mm diameter. As well as machining HSS and segmental saw blades, the PowerStar 850 can also process friction and solid carbide saws, but is still easy to use thanks to the user-friendly symbols and complete settings on its large touchscreen monitor. The PowerStar 850 uses a powerful direct drive for the grinding spindle, like the KSC series of machines, as well as an expandable shaft for accepting the grinding wheel, that cuts down on performance loss and unwanted vibration. Following the sharpening or re-toothing process, the grinding head and cooling nozzles move automatically to commence the chamfering process and the 850 has the ability to infinitely adjust the chamfer angle up to a max of 45º. For more details of optional extras and the range of automatic saw sharpening machines contact Vollmer UK on 0115 949 1040 or www.volmer-group.com
