Dan’s role for the exclusive distributors of all Senco brand nailers, staplers and collated screw fastening systems will be to work with an established field sales team to develop existing customer business and expand opportunities across construction and manufacturing market sectors. The new National Sales Manager for the industrial sector previously worked for Fischer Fixings and Hilti Great Britain and said that he was sure the “unique service offering and bespoke solutions” from Poppers Senco will be good news for customers facing market pressures.

International Decorative Surfaces (IDS) went live on Twitter in mid July, tweeting regularly about its extensive portfolio in worktops, flooring, laminates, Showerwall and solid surfacing. The surface materials specialist was the first distributor in its field to launch on Twitter and already has nearly 100 followers with many more expected in the coming months. Followers will have access to benefits and services like real time product updates, and product tips and tricks. IDS “Twoffers” will include discounts or promotions exclusively available to Twitter devotees.

a passion for

edging P

assion runs through the veins at Ostermann GmbH. The company managing director, Dagmar Daxenberger, talks with energy and vitality about her company’s plans for the future; the edging team waxes lyrical over the latest edgebanding décors; even the forklift drivers speed down the aisles of the company’s high tech warehouse in Bocholt, singing stirring songs as they pick the next order. There is an energy about this company which is inescapable. “I want the philosophy and spirit of the Rudolf Ostermann family to be felt by all employees,” says Ms Daxenberger, who now controls the German company and its subsidiaries in the Netherlands, France, Italy and, most recently, the UK. “And,” she adds, enthusiastically, “I want every one of them to take that philosophy to our customers.”

It’s a tall order but it seems all employees have taken it to heart. The original aims of Rudolf Ostermann to supply small to medium-sized customers with exactly what they needed, exactly when they needed it remain at the very core of the Ostermann philosophy - and now, with the establishment of Ostermann UK Ltd, British furniture manufacturers can also take advantage of a service that has propelled Ostermann GmbH to the very zenith of edgebanding supply in Germany. But with a plethora of edgebanding suppliers to choose from, what more could Ostermann UK Ltd bring to the party? Managing director, Sabine Kinner, has no doubt: “We supply edgebandings of the leading manufacturers from Europe. Our customers are small to medium-sized manufacturing companies and we know their require-

ments very well. We are proud of being able to offer the widest range of edgebanding materials and décors in any length from one metre and any width up to 104mm, all on 48 hour delivery.” And with a new UK warehouse coming on stream by the end of the year, Sabine is confident delivery times will shorten even more. In the best Ostermann tradition, she’s aiming to launch a next day delivery service. “We’re open from 7am until 5.30pm UK time,” she adds. “But our online order system enables customers to check out colour matches and order anything from edgebands to touch up pens, waxes and adhesives at any time.” In addition to ABS, PVC, PP, acrylic, melamine, real wood (all available preglued) and aluminium edgings, Ostermann UK Ltd will also carry T-bar edges and laser-compatible edgings for ABS, acrylic, melamine and solid wood. To back it up, the company offers a tailored sample box to rival anything on the market, all hand-picked to suit individual customers. All samples are made from 2mm edging tape and selected from a range which extends to

more than ten thousand edgebands. “Our products are matched to those of 65 different board manufacturers and, through our online shop, we offer more than 120,000 different combinations,” continues Sabine. “If a customer requests something we don’t already stock, our customer purchasing department will acquire that product for them. Anything from our stock range is already available on 48 hour delivery. We don’t believe there is anyone who can rival our range, or our service.” Ostermann’s range also contains numerous more unusual products, such as crossgrain and endgrain edgebands, aluminium layered edgebands, LED-lit edgebands and ABS. The first ABS laser edgebands were introduced back in February 2011 along with a laser coating service, so any edgeband from the range can be supplied lasercompatible in 10-11 days. Minimum order is just one roll. With such an offer, it is with much confidence that Ostermann UK has opened its doors to UK customers. hen innovation leads to success, the advantages for the innovator and you, the customer, begin to multiply. The décor designers at Hranipex have been feverishly busy, enlarging an already expansive stock edgebanding collection from a devilishly delicious 666 décors to more than 750 - and there are still more on the way. The company’s spokesman is adamant that, with this Express Collection, you can choose any width from 16mm to 400mm, any thickness from 0.45mm to 3mm - and you can buy direct from stock in any length from ten metres with direct-to-your-door, guaranteed 48 hour delivery. The Czech company, Hranipex, is expanding rapidly. Success across several markets has encouraged the company to extended its branches, most recently with a new office in Austria “to better serve European customers”. With this new branch, the Czech company now has sales offices in seven countries across Europe - including branches in Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, and Austria.

Décors with a truly European flavour are now available throughout all seven branches and are shipped direct to UK customers, bringing stylish, innovative, unusual and unique products to your doorstep from wider Europe. Furthermore, Hranipex has just announced a new 2011 collection which matches perfectly with the products of Kronospan UK. The Fast and Fresh Collection is already well established as a part of the Hranipex collection. Basic dimensions of 22x2mm and 42x2mm are supplemented with stock mother rolls of 115x2mm. Using several slitting machines, Hranipex offers a custom width cutting service for any wood décor. Specify non-standard widths from 16mm up to 115mm and order just 100m. Non-standard widths can be ordered from a 400mm wide mother roll in lengths of one metre upwards. For more information, visit the website www.hranipex.cz/en. Kronospan décors are listed in the Inspiration 2011 Collection. Alternatively, send an email hranipex@hranipex.cz or call 00420 565 501 220.

working with design T Events organiser, Huddlestone, introduces a new show of practical design for UK furniture and joinery manufacturers

he road to ruin is littered with the remains of UK manufacturers who set out to beat the lowest price. Now it is evident that we’ve found a more effective way to compete in the world. The 2010 FIRA report ‘Competitiveness of the UK Furniture Industry’ pleasingly confirms a clear shift to making product design our weapon of choice. In doing so, we take for granted that most manufacturers understand the need to take full advantage of the advances in technology. The large amount of business reported at the 2010 W10 Working with Wood show is testament to that. We can also assume that good service is no longer a way to differentiate – fail to give it and the customer has a million places to go. But, with all the stealth of a gliding kitchen drawer, a quiet revolution of design is being adopted throughout UK manufacturing. The FIRA report identifies the number one strategy for furniture manufacturers as ‘product differentiation’ – an area in which design will dominate. It’s evident that good design sells. Not only that, but it sells more easily, for more money and earns more margin.

(Is the BMW Mini any more capable than many competing in its class at half the price?) If design was a drug we’d be addicts. Anyone still placing design down the list of considerations only has to think about how furniture purchase is regarded in the UK. With a fairly affluent population (in world terms) we choose to either buy new furniture or ‘make do’ and spend our hard earned cash elsewhere. A very real competitor to furniture purchase in the domestic environment might be a car or a holiday. A furniture purchase needs to offer a lot of satisfaction to the buyer. Purely functional buys can wait. We have all seen well designed furniture. Leaving aside the perfectly worthy artistic designs, I am talking about practical design so good you don’t notice it. Effortless closing, clever storage, beautiful surfaces just make life that bit better. Take them away and you’d notice. As a furniture manufacturer you are surrounded by opportunities to use good design in your products. Even the briefest of glances at the materials and components industry offers thousands of routes to differentiating your product and injecting buyer appeal by the bucket load.

FURNITURE JOURNAL ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE SEPTEMBER 2011 • 15 “As a component Manufacturer our investments over the last few years to adapt to the needs of todays markets has been heavily design based... CAD, 3D SCANNING, LASER ENGRAVING, RAPID PROTOTYPING and CNC MILLING to name only the most expensive!!... ...all this is perfectly complementary to the objectives of the new Design oriented W12.”

“In the global market Italian and German manufacturers have focussed their designs on style, and have been hugely successful in developing strong export markets, ensuring a strong manufacturing base. To compete in the world market, UK manufacturers need to ensure that style has the same importance as functionality, which will open up new opportunities in new territories.”

Ben Morby

Phil Reynolds

Sales Director, Armac Martin

Principal Technical Manager, FIRA

“The UK market has been crying out for a show, for which the priority is to highlight design and innovation. We sometimes need to re-invent the wheel and I see W12 as the ideal stepping stone for designers and manufacturers alike to do so.”

“W10 proved to be an ideal launch pad for the entry of the Ostermann Group into the UK market – a great platform for Europe’s largest supplier of edgings to showcase our extensive range of products. For the W12 show we plan to exhibit again to underline our long-term commitment to our UK customers.”

Terry Willett Director, EDP (UK) LTD

New emphasis on design cries out to be fed by a trade show for manufacturers looking to reap the benefits. Tactile materials, clever movements and beautiful shapes are best appreciated and understood at a live event. A walk around ZoW, Interzum or Sicam bombards you with ideas and quickly shifts you into an optimistic forward looking mood. The result quickly reflects in the bottom line. However, it’s just not that easy for time-poor furniture manufacturers to spend days away from the business at shows in mainland Europe and beyond. Despite the image of ‘a hop across to Hannover’ it’s a bit harder to do in reality. Booking your time away, co-ordinating planes and securing a decently priced but convenient hotel still keeps most UK manufacturers at home. There are 7,000 companies in the UK manufacturing furniture. It’s not unreasonable to expect an exhibition purely to assist UK manufacturers pursue their best option for survival and growth. For that reason Huddlestone has just created Working with Design, a trade show all about practical design for manufacturers. Instant design ready to go into your own products.

Sabine Kinner Managing Director, Ostermann UK

The first edition of Working with Design will be co-located alongside Working with Wood, the long established technology show for the furniture and joinery industries. In holding both events at the NEC in 2012 (7-10 October) they are maximising what you can get from a single day out. The majority of you who are planning to be at W12 anyway are very clear that you want to see Materials and Components located alongside machinery. Visitors will find a show in Working with Design which has its own identity and feel. In a quieter, cleaner environment there will be the opportunity to see the best in surfaces, panels, foils, edges – in fact any material involved in furniture manufacture. They don’t just think ‘wood’ at working with design – here is your opportunity to see and experience the full range of materials. Is lightweight material a major part of the future? Do plastics, glass and metal offer new channels for your products? Can lighting play a part in product appeal? You will be able to judge for yourself at Working with Design. Component design has so much to give to your customer’s experience.

Working with Design will feature the latest from UK distributors of worldwide products. An experience designed to inspire all UK furniture manufacturers. For those of you who remember the old ASFI shows, Working with Design moves the concept to a new, fresher and more valuable level. Working with Design will be full of information reflecting the industry shift to appreciating – and working with – good design. Although 2012 may seem some time away yet, you’ll be hearing about Working with Design throughout the next year. Exhibitors at the show will have lots of opportunity to show their ranges online before the exhibition and visitors will get chance to plan their visit to the show, focussing on the essentials they need to see. UK manufacturers in the sector have the most obvious of drives to increase their margins by lifting themselves clear of world price wars. With 75% of raw materials and components in that market being sourced from within the UK, the opportunities for suppliers are clear. The industry now has a UK national trade event to bring these two together, face to face.

he Biesse Group is dedicated to producing industry leading highly innovative technology for the wood, glass, stone and new materials sectors. One of Biesse Group's focuses has been to make the technology used in its high-end machines available throughout its range at a more affordable price. Biesse Wood Division has recently launched its new Rover A-S 5-Axis, a compact pod and rail machine that can process different sized material and offers improved performance in the processing of windows and doors. Fitted with an HSD 5 Axis working head, the Rover A-S is one of the most advanced, compact and price competitive 5-axis CNC machine available in the market today. The technology is the same as that used in the Rover A and Rover C ranges. The table system of the Rover A-S can be used as two independent locking zones, one to the left and one to the right, meaning an operator can load on one side of the machine and, while the machine is working, unload on the other, keeping a continuous operation at all times. The table system is available with Biesse's UTS or ATS as an

optional extra, giving you maximum control over the working table. Biesse has also launched a new vertical machining centre, the Skipper V31. A highly flexible entry level drilling machine, it offers a high productivity rate, yet takes up minimal space. Featuring a working head with 10 vertical and 6 horizontal spindles and a 120mm diameter blade, it can also be fitted with a 4.5kW electrospindle for routing tasks as an option. The vertical handling of the Skipper V31 has an anti-scratch working table to ensure even high gloss panels are protected and it comes with the intuitive and easy operator software interface, Biesse Works, as well zero set-up time so you can start production straight away. Biesse’s open house tour, BiesseInside, takes place from 13-15th October. Guests can visit Biesse's production facility in Pesaro, Italy, and see the latest developments. In-depth scientific studies resulted in the Stefani laser edge banding technology on the LASER LINE edgebander. The Laser Line uses edges designed with an active internal layer that melts when in contact with the laser beam, forming an invisible permanent joint between the panel and the edge banding. This achieves a high quality finish on panel edges, eliminating visible glue lines and can be

used to process edges with different heights and thicknesses. Moreover costs are lower compared to CO2 lasers and there is greater production efficiency with reduced waste and no heating time required. 0115 977 0044 www.scmgroup-uk.com scmgroupuk@scmgroup.com

• user friendly • easy to set up • maximum safety

The edgebanding unit generates a laser beam that hits the edge activating a special layer that merges perfectly and permanently with the panel.

Perfectly integrated in the edgebander cabin, the LASER LINE technology uses a diode laser source.

Vitap Eclipse made a first appearance at the last W10 show - and is also for shapes on a semiautomatic edgebanding system for internal and external radii on panels from 10mm in thickness to 60mm.

rw sha David Thompson Rowlands at RW tells FJ that contour finishing of shapes is one of the key technologies of the moment. “Many people are wanting to value add panel furniture products by making them more appealing,” he explains, “with shapes that are easy on the eye and are also more touch-friendly.”

I

f edgebanding shapes is presenting you with a probem, RW Woodmachines has a few solutions to offer. The new Vitap Eclipse semi-automatic edgebanding system for internal and external radii is ideal for smaller workshops and edges panels from 10 to 60mm thick. Decorative edging materials from 1mm to 3mm in thickness can be applied on the Vitap Eclipse to the internal or external radii of panels using adhesive from a single 1Kg capacity glue pot. Set up of adhesive application for temperature and glue-line regulation are both infinitely adjustable from the front of the machine and an automatic guillotine is activated by an electronic encoder to cut accurate joins for open edges and perfect butt joints on en-

closed edge pieces. Two rollers are deployed to copy shapes running in conjunction with two 800W heating elements, each with electronic temperature controls via a thermo-regulator. An automatic guillotine flush trims coiled materials up to 3mm x 45mm. A turning table has been developed by Vitap on the Eclipse for handling larger panels and a holding arm with vacuum clamps secures those bigger panels during edging and trimming. Another solution is RW's Vector Revolution - a new breed of edgebander for shapes that works continuously and reliably on shapes of all sizes without a break. A single operator can keep up the pressure on the Vector because it is double sided with a single

apes up head that works a piece on one side of the table while the finished piece is being taken off and replaced with a new blank at the other. Vacuum clamping pods can be positioned at any point on the table to accommodate wide ranging sizes and shapes and can also accommodate very large single pieces, like work tops or full height doors. Vector technology takes the quality edge finishing of shaped components out of the CNC environment and introduces an exciting new capability. Vector is an ideal machine for edge finishing nested panels because it requires no computer programming - the Vector Revolution effectively programs itself. Once the head has made contact

with the work-piece, it simply follows the edge being worked until it returns to the point at which it started - and then it concludes the cycle with a perfect butt joint. Shape is no longer a limiting factor because the Vector will edge finish external radii down to 20mm and internal radii down to 50mm fully automatically using high quality PVC materials up to 2mm in thickness, raising quality standards significantly. Whatever you are looking to edge, a solution from RW could well be the answer - and shapes have become something of a speciality. ED Fabrications, one of the UK's leading manufacturers and suppliers of commercial catering equipment, has called on the support and expertise of SCM GB to help its expansion into the production and supply of kitchens to the trade. Howard Rishton contacted several suppliers of machinery, including Ian McCarthy of SCM Group UK, to discuss CED's requirements for nested carcass production using 18mm MFC and cam and dowel construction. The company’s aim was to supply fully assembled carcasses. Demonstrations followed and orders were placed with SCM for a Morbidelli Universal 20 CNC Machining Centre, an SCM Olimpic S2000 single sided edgebander with return conveyor and a DMC Wide Belt Finishing Sander. The high specification Morbidelli is part of a fully automatic line and has a 4250 x 2280mm work table. A stack of panels is loaded onto the vacuumequipped infeed platform (mounted on the Universal's mobile gantry), which collects the top panel from the stack and feeds it onto the machine's multifunction aluminium table. The table has a high capacity 500m 3 /hour vacuum system fitted to hold the panel firmly to the table for the Nesting process. A powerful 8.5kW routing head, optimised and programmed via the

Expansion into kitchens has prompted CED Fabrications to invest in SCM. machine's PC using Cabinet Vision, machines the required panels from the full-size sheet, taking tools from a Rapid 16 automatic tool changer. The panels are barcoded and off-loaded automatically. Panels are edge banded, normally with 2mm thick ABS edging, on an SCM Olimpic S2000 T-ERL single sided edgebander that has auto panel spacing at the infeed followed by an edge machining unit with diamond cutters for a perfect edge before gluing. Hot melt glue is fed automatically from a hopper system with pre-melting to ensure the glue in the glue pot is always at the correct temperature before application to

the panel edge. After end trimming and top and bottom edge trimming, a Round SK corner rounding unit, with 2 positions for different thicknesses of edge banding, trims the ABS edging perfectly before profile scraping. An oscillating buffing unit completes the edging process. At the outfeed is a "Spinner" return conveyor system that transports the edged panels back to the infeed of the S2000 so that the operator can continue edge banding the other sides of the panel as required. CED Kitchens will be pressing their own doors, including high gloss finishes, using either a hot platen press or a membrane press. To ensure a perfect surface on the MDF core before pressing, the company has installed a DMC Masterbrush MB1350 M4 Finishing Sanding system with 4 operational units and a 1350mm working width. The first two units, each 300mm diameter, are rotating brush units with abrasive strips which can be counter rotating and operate at an angle. The third unit is a rotating disc, orbiting unit, while the fourth unit is another brush roller with horse hair to give a final finish. Dust is removed at the outfeed of the DMC by 2 oscillating blower rods and a turbo blowing unit. For further details call SCM GB on 0115 9770044, fax 0115 9770946 or visit scmgroupuk@scmgroup.com

J Ormerod has just taken a major step towards securing a future free of cost for disposal of woodwaste. It’s also about to start enjoying freedom from oil and gas bills whilst heating its whole site from waste materials. JJO plc produces over 600 kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms every week from the timber of managed forests. All its waste materials are now recycled with a Mawera wood fired boiler. The installation replaced all the existing heating units within the factory and required a new boiler house construction. Tony Devereux supervised the installation, which took three months from start to finish. The plant, a turnkey project, consists of a new storage silo together with transport systems to the boiler house, in which is installed 2600kW Mawera FSR combustion and boiler equipment. The plant is fully automated with de-ashing and automatic cleaning of the boiler tubes as part of the standard equipment.

The boiler is equipped with a flat moving grate and two-stage combustion system. The recirculation of the flue gases into both primary and secondary combustion stages ensures emission limits stay well within the PPC legislated levels, regardless of the size and varying quantities of materials being burnt. In fact, JJO chose this particular equipment because its efficiency and emission performance qualifies for ECA (Enhanced Capital Allowance) and the Biomass Support Scheme. Full EPA and Efficiency tests, carried out on the plant by independent consultants, showed excellent thermal efficiency, qualifying JJO for ECA (Enhanced Capital Allowance) on the whole installation. The installation includes continuous monitoring of the EPA emissions with remote access to both the emissions and the full boiler control. To find out what Mawera could do for you call Mawera UK on 01543 258844 or visit www.mawera.co.uk

JJ Ormerod has cut woodwaste disposal costs to zero, banished oil and gas bills and ensured a comfortable working environment just in time for winter whilst capitalising on ECA.

cogate energy-saving systems, installed by Dust Control Systems Ltd, have enabled the DW Group of Companies to dramatically cut running costs at two separate manufacturing facilities in the South of England. DW Mouldings Ltd, based in Sandy, Bedfordshire, and DW General Wood Machinists Ltd in Tottenham, North London, both commissioned DCS to retrofit Ecogate “extraction-ondemand” systems to their respective dust plants. At the Bedfordshire site, DCS installed two Ecogate Greenbox12+ controllers, 15 automatic motorised gates with sensors, and fitted variable speed drives to 75kW, 55kW and 30kW fan units. As machines come on-line, or shut down, the Ecogate controllers automatically detect changes in load and adjust fan speeds accordingly. The system also detects when groups of machines served by a particular fan are off-line and shuts down the fan until

required. The net result is a total power saving of around 60%. At the Tottenham factory, two 30kW fans were converted to variable speed operation, and a total of 24 woodworking machines were fitted with motorised gates linked to two Ecogate Greenbox12+ controllers. Power usage at Tottenham has been reduced by 58%. Ecogate technology, with its variable speed drives, should result in a combined annual reduction in electricity usage of a massive 240,000kW hours. “DCS put forward an extremely compelling case for their Ecogate system and, with a return on investment of just three years, it was an easy decision to make,” says Brian Dossett, Chairman of DW Group. “Dust Control Systems managed every aspect of the contract extremely professionally. I can honestly say that everything was done right and there is nothing to criticise.” Call DCS on 0800 040 7116, or visit www.ecogate.co.uk

Sparks fly at high speed. They travel at a hundred kilometres per hour along the ducts of the dust collection system and reach the silo in less than three seconds The CONTROL LOGIC SPARK DETECTOR is faster than the sparks themselves. It detects them with its highly sensitive infrared sensor, intercepts and extinguishes them in a flash. It needs no periodic inspection. The CONTROL LOGIC system is designed for “total supervision”. It verifies that sparks have been extinguished, gives prompt warning of any malfunction and, if needed, cuts off the duct and stops the fan.
