clear as c T Rochdale-based door manufacturer, Crystal Doors shows editor Catherine Earle that there's more to door design than gloss.
o many, starting a door manufacturing business after completing a degree in food manufacturing may seem something of a departure. I couldn't see the connection either, until Richard Hagan, founder of Crystal Doors, explained his love for all things crafted. With a passion for design and an ambitious mind-set, at just twentysomething, Richard bought his first workshop in Rochdale, Greater Manchester and entered the UK doors market. Whether coincidence or part of a meticulous plan, Richard's timing was perfect. In 1994 - the year he established Crystal Doors - the vinyl door had just been introduced to the UK. “Everybody wanted vinyl doors,” recalls Richard. “It was something new and different and thanks to my previous experience, I could supply them at a competitive price point and establish myself quickly.” The company has grown considerably in the last ten years to become a serious contender in the doors market. Recently commissioned by retail giant, John Lewis,

restaurant chain Red Hot World Buffet, and designer Peter Colin Smith, the company is reaching new heights. But what makes Crystal Doors different to any other door manufacturer? Clear to all that visit the newly acquired 32,000 sq ft factory, Richard's hands on approach to his business which saw him whizzing around on a fork lift truck half way through his interview - seems to be the company's secret to success. This, partnered with a natural creative flair and a sound business head, helps Richard to understand his customers and provide exactly what's needed to fulfill their objectives. “When the owners of Red Hot World Buffet came to me and asked for my design input, we worked together to create a showstopping design,” recalls Richard. “The ceiling, walls and tables were all exclusively designed by Crystal Doors and it really pushed the boundaries of modern décor. Sculptured finishes and statement colours were order of the day.” Inspiring commercial projects such as this have seen rhythmic textures and bold colours trickle down into consumer-friendly kitchen

Harlequin. designs. “It's not just the commercial sector that is keen to explore new areas of design. The trends for unique colour palettes, curves and made-to-measure door designs are becoming more evident in modern kitchen design too,” adds Richard. Quick to predict a new trend, Crystal Doors has formed a simple and straightforward approach to bespoke kitchen design. It offers a colour match service, giving customers full control over the look of their kitchen. “Only a small sample or RAL number is needed for us to match the exact colour,” Richard explains. To create singlebatch door designs, Crystal Doors has also purchased two new 5-axis CNC machines giving the company an edge in the style stakes. It can now offer exclusive 3D designs on a 3-10 day lead-time. It even offers a 24hour turn around service for when time isn't on your side. But, whilst the company continues to make manufacturing advancements to keep ahead of any new trends, some designs keep re-emerging. Richard is reminded of his earlier days by the rise in demand for
paintable foils. “I can't quite believe it but after 17 years I'm selling painted doors again,” Richard laughs. “I can remember at the age of 15 sanding MDF for pierced laminate doors. That was 26 years ago. It's strange how trends come around,” he adds. And with its popularity continuing to increase, Crystal's paintable foil range is now one of its best sellers. “But without sounding too predictable, gloss is still king,” jokes Richard. So what does the future hold for Crystal Doors? In the past six months it has seen a steady rise in orders, which Richard puts down to the strengthening economy. “We're finally starting to get some stability in England,” he says. “People who have been scrupulously saving over the last few years are finally able to breath a sigh of relief and spend more easily. With the first signs of economical recovery appearing, the need for new kitchens is certain. This is great news for the manufacturer and the retailer.” For more information on Crystal Doors and its products please call 01706 351010 or visit www.crystaldoors.com

ith over 30 years of experience in the furniture industry and over 3,600 door style and finish combinations in its range, it is clear to see why ECF’s customers are eager to find out what’s next for the Leicestershire-based company. Keen to lead the way in made-to-measure kitchen design, the Goscote range - which was originally launched over ten years ago - offers a comprehensive range of both contemporary and traditional vinyl wrapped door styles that can be created to meet the exact needs of the customer. Its flexibility and comprehensive choice has seen the Goscote range become one of ECF’s most sought-after ranges. With interest in the range rising, ECF’s dedicated design team have introduced nine new on-trend styles and 12 new finish options. Limited only by your imagination, new door styles include Elle, a handleless, chic design that seamlessly combines a contemporary trend with a classic finish and Ruskin Shaker, with its fashionable faux in-frame design. ECF’s acrylic range, Phoenix, has also enhanced its offering by introducing three new high gloss finishes and a new style. The shaker style version of Phoenix - Orion, is now available in striking High Gloss White - offering a sleek and contemporary design, which when presented in a square edged design with an acrylic faced construction, creates the appearance of a glass door. Constructed from 18mm MDF board, on to which is then laminated a high quality acrylic or pvc foil, the Phoenix range is supplied on a made-to-measure basis and is available with matching or duo glass effect edging. When teamed with a textured surface or combined with uni-colours, the design stands out from the crowd. For more information on ECF’s extended range of made-to-measure doors, please call 01664 424288 or visit the website at www.ecf.co
With a modern gloss white finish, Orion successfully merges the old with the new to create a visually inspiring new door that, when presented in a square edged design and with an acrylic faced construction, creates the appearance of a glass door, but at a competitive price point.

Trebling its work force, continually diversifying and introducing new door ranges - whilst expanding into new markets both at home and abroad - BA has gone somewhat against the market trend. Our pursuit of innovation, quality, design and customer service has meant we are the solution of choice for many in the KBB market. We listen to what our customers want, work in partnership with them to produce a product and then, with an all-inclusive marketing support package in place, we make sure they can sell it to their customers. s the UK kitchen door market turning its back on gloss? Whilst the idea may seem farfetched to some, there has been a definite trend shift following this year’s Interzum exhibition in Köln. With the emphasis on natural beauty, Ney has taken its inspiration for its new timber door collection from nature and the environment. Following on from the success of its 3D embossed vinyl finishes, which include a selection of heavily embossed grains, saw marks and horizontal textures, designers are keener than ever to blend texture, colour and materials in the kitchen. “The trend for natural textures and materials is picking up pace,” explains Gerd Ney, Managing Director of Ney. “Whilst you can’t second guess a trend, listening to our customers’ views and opinions during the development process was crucial for creating the right products at the right price,” he adds. The Natural Wood Collection, which is made-to-measure on a lead-time of four to five weeks, comes in 16 timeless designs - 10 of which are available as in-frame options. Each design is available

in one of five species - White Oak, Character Oak, American Walnut and painted Maple and Ash - and is available in a Patina, Distressed or Antiqued finish to create a kitchen that is perfectly styled around the customer. And, with no minimum order quantity, doors can be ordered quickly and efficiently. The White and Character Oak - which is sourced directly from Slovenia - is known for its unpredictable grain structure. To create a kitchen design that offers both fluidity and structure something many of us take for granted after years of vinyl door designs - each pre-planed solid centre panel and board is hand picked so colour, knot and size consistency exists across a full set of doors. Other, less rebellious species, such as the American Walnut can be pre-selected based on the customer’s requirements, with grains offering an all black or textured finish. “No door is exactly the same. Just like
12 • KITCHEN & BATHROOM JOURNAL OCTOBER 2013
we all have unique fingerprints, wood offers an exclusive design that is virtually impossible to replicate. It is this slight variation that gives the Natural Wood Collection its character,” explains Gerd. “Why work against nature when you can work with it?” With painted doors making somewhat of a comeback in the UK market, painted Ash and Maple play an important role in the new Natural Wood Collection. Maple is much harder than its common rival, tulipwood, so it is less likely to dent. It also gives a higher quality of finish when painted. While Ash - a popular choice for many money-savvy consumers - offers a consistent grain at a competitive price point - offering affordable style for all. Market Insight: “2013 has seen the expansion of greater choice and customisation within any given fascia or door range. Consumers are increasingly unhappy to be limited to a narrow range of finish and style options, and now expect greater choice as standard. This is largely fuelling the current trend for ‘paint to order’ style product, where distributors and manufacturers are offering a variety of styles and finishes, with consumers and retailers prepared to receive product on slightly extended lead-times. This has forced greater flexibility requirements down the supply chain and into the manufacturing base as we continually look to turn the model of mass production on its head. “This year has also seen matt finishes trying to break the stranglehold of the gloss hegemony, with some parts of the market showing a strong uptake in matt as opposed to gloss sales. We would expect this to continue into 2014. At the same time we’re seeing a migration from lower cost materials to higher value genuine lacquered product, with retailers and consumers prepared to pay a little more for a better quality product. “As we progress into 2014 we’d expect to see a requirement for stronger colours, an increased propensity to accent by mixing door, cabinet and handle styles and finishes, and the growth of more natural materials used within the kitchen.”
The Crestwood Opaco and Opaco Senza (pictured) ranges epitomise the current trends for matt lacquered product, with a choice of slab and handleless door styles, and an array of finishing options. The Alabaster finish, which is available from stock, is available in the Opaco slab and Opaco Senza handleless variants design, whilst a further 8 contemporary finishes are available on a 3-4 week lead-time. “Choice is key. We’re seeing bespoke, made-to-measure designs becoming the norm. Consumers are wanting individually designed kitchens that reflect them, not the market.” Gerd Ney - Managing Director, Ney. Bellissimo’s reputation as one of the distributors with the greatest choice of colours and sizes remains intact. Apart from its standard options, Bellissimo can supply any colour and size of door specified, including curves and handleless, and will willingly match any of the colours offered by the major paint suppliers. “While natural tones are on the rise, strong colours still have a significant role in the market,” says Bellissimo managing director Warnock Watson. “Choice is the key as bolder tones are all about expressing individuality.” 01772 696959 www.bellissimofurniture.co.uk

Marpatt has noticed an increasing tendency in the market for Dual Tone and texture combinations. This blend - popularly lacquer gloss finish and natural timber - can be manipulated in a plethora of different colour options. Pictured is Horizon Alabaster Gloss slab mixed with a completely different yet sympathetic colour (Horizon Nero Oak), and the combination is almost limitless with Marpatt’s Special Finishes custom pallet which works from RAL numbers for that individual touch. Industry Insight: “It seems that there is certainly some movement in house sales now and we, therefore, have the dual benefit of those who are moving and looking to make the usual changes in their ‘new’ home and householders who are staying put and are looking to refurbishment and home improvement of their property, investing in its future sales appeal and value. Kitchens are the obvious room where owners choose to make a personal statement with show-stopping fixtures and appliances. “Sinks have become very much an integral part of the kitchen design process from the very beginning. The range of sink options is so wide that the sink is now carefully considered by the designer at the outset to complement the styling of each individual kitchen.
“Trend wise, there is still a tendency towards sinks with a minimalist curve and rounded corners. It creates a much softer visual look and certainly not as dramatic as the square designs that were readily available five years ago. “Then there is the issue of size. Often overlooked in the sink and tap market, solutions for all spaces - however quirky need to be met. With rectangular and under-mounted sinks still proving a popular choice in the UK, space-saving solutions are also taking hold with corner and round sinks breaking the mould and utilising awkward and often wasted corner space to create an eye-catching feature. “Stainless steel is still by far the most dominant choice of material with 70% of the UK market. It is renowned for its hygienic properties, which is why it is invariably chosen in medical, hospital and

catering situations. It offers great versatility over a wide range of prices, and there is an ever-increasing choice of designs, under-mounts and insets in the market. “For the coming year, coloured sinks could be the next must-have kitchen style-statement. Continuing its upward spiral, the coloured sink offers unique opportunities for the kitchen designer by complementing the worktop for example, or picking up the main colour theme of the kitchen. Whilst it’s still not on par with stainless steel, individual kitchen designs are becoming more popular, making coloured sinks one to watch.”

Designed for those who live in areas of the UK with hard water, the scale filter from Quooker has been developed to lengthen the lifespan of your tap. By reducing the amount of minerals which make water hard and form appliance-degrading limescale, an ion exchange cartridge removes the scale-forming calcium and magnesium ions from hard water. It can then deliver soft water to the heating element of the tap and increases the durability of the taps’ mechanisms. The filter also has high capacity, processing up to 4,200 litres of water at 10º dH before requiring replacement - making it cost affective in the home. 0808 1152442 www.quooker.co.uk

veryone seems in agreement that the boiling water tap is the ‘it’ gadget to have in the kitchen. For some it’s all about the cachet of owning one, while for others it’s all about the sheer practicality that they offer for a multitude of kitchen tasks. But as more and more manufacturers enter the fray with their offerings, what should a retailer consider when deciding on which brand to go with? Top of the list is the choice of designs available because that’s the first thing that grabs the consumer’s attention, before they go into the ins and outs of its performance. Steve Rutter explains, “With the kitchen being such a personal space, and the range of kitchen looks, from heritage to modern to contemporary, that you need to cater for being so wide, having a decent choice of tap styles to offer is increasingly important. One size doesn’t fit all.” The Minerva range offers four different tap designs, which can appeal to a broad church of consumers, from a timeless swan neck design in the Minerva Original and Helix to more contemporary angular styles with the Irena and Mondial. There’s also a choice of finishes in chrome and the premium solid stainless steel for those who want to trade right up. Then there’s the space under the sink to consider. For most, it is a haven for under-the-sink paraphernalia, which is far too valuable to lose. The Minerva range offers the benefit of a slim horizontal water tank measuring 550mm long x 211mm wide x 142mm high with a larger than average 5-litre capacity. “It sits on the floor neatly behind a standard kitchen plinth,” explains Steve. “It’s out of sight and not taking up the precious room in the base unit that every household seems to need.” Every hot tap will at some point need a cartridge change. The Minerva range has a filter cartridge that is fixed at the back of the kitchen cabinet so it can be easily accessed for changing, rather than being incorporated into the tank like some models. It’s a simple twist and turn action, pop the new cartridge in and the job’s done. There’s nothing that takes the shine off your enjoyment of something more than it being a pain to keep clean or maintain. Steve adds, “A boiling water tap is an investment piece for the kitchen and features like this really matter over time.” Changing the cartridge is important for the quality of the boiling water that is dispensed, as well as preserving the performance and longevity of the tank by preventing limescale build up. The filter cartridge is also bio-degradable, putting a tick firmly in the environmental box. A recent report evidenced that the average consumer overfills the kettle with three times more water than is actually needed, which is wasteful of both water (because by habit people tip the water out and start again) and electricity. Boiling water taps are low on energy consumption and only dispense the hot water that you need thanks to its

steaming ahead dedicated safety feature of a push-button, twist and turn action. Steve admits, “They’re the sort of tap that once you’ve had one, you’d never be without one and if you enjoy using a product you’re more likely to tell everyone about it.” Word of mouth is often the most powerful message and retailers may find that they generate sales in the retro-fit market - as the tap offers a quick and easy fit into existing 35mm tap holes. Boiling water taps are a great way to engage customers in-store with a demo and a free cuppa. They offer great sales potential, more so when they are on proper working display. eady, Set, Bake! With the return of The Great British Bake-off to our screens, retro-inspired kitchen appliances have never been so popular. Over six million viewers tune in on a weekly basis to indulge in an array of traditional cakes, pastries and breads from recipes many have forgotten. With nostalgia playing such an important role in the show, it’s not surprising that its set has been kitted out with the latest 50s inspired kitchen appliances, capturing the nation’s imagination when it comes to kitchen design. It is often said that trends reappear time and again but whilst we can all breath a sigh of relief that men’s platform shoes will not be at the height of fashion anytime soon and our shellsuits can remain firmly locked away, it would seem - with help from a rather popular bakery show - that classic kitchen décors and vintage appliances have made a successful comeback and have turned retro revival into a lucrative market.

But is the trend only skin deep? Well, yes it is. Manufacturers are not expecting people to turn back the domestic clock and revert back to their hand-cranked predecessors. Heritage brands have continued to create freestanding and integrated appliances with high performance technology and the latest innovations but simply encased them in an iconic shell. From fridges and dishwashers to food processers and microwaves, each has been revamped so manufacturers can offer a wide range of matching appliances in duckegg blues, yellows, reds and creams. A veteran in many kitchens, the range cooker holds the title for the longest serving retro appliance. It’s come along way from its cast iron beginnings in the early 1800s but its concept remains unchanged. Eager to simplify the culinary process, its purpose was to offer a convenient space that had all the features needed to create a meal. “That is still true today,” explains Giovanni Demuru,

Smeg’s Advice To Retailers “Retailers should aim to commit as much floor space as possible to ensure that they are able to demonstrate a variety of cookers in a variety of widths, oven figurations and fuel types. Firstly, having established the customer’s particular cooking preferences, hob fuel preference, size of family, and regularity of entertaining on a large scale, they should then lead them towards the best solution for them which also matches their aesthetic aspirations to suit their kitchen décor.”

revival Category Manager of Hotpoint. “Cooking on a range cooker allows you to have everything you need to hand at a convenient height, so dishes and pans can be quickly transferred from the waist height hob to the larger, more spacious ovens below.” Whilst its first owners could only heat their range cookers on solid fuel, flexibility is key in today’s market. Giovanni adds, “Many range cookers have both a fan and a conventional oven, as this tends to give the hobby cook and amateur chef the space, flexibility and capacities they demand to create perfect meals time after time.” The layout of hobs also offers more flexibility than a conventional hob and, with the addition of wok burners, fish kettle burners, or dual or multi-zone ceramic hobs, there is still room to use accessories like griddle plates at the same time as cooking with pans on the remaining burners.
But whilst many retailers are keen to promote the different options available, manufacturers are going one step further: offering virtually no limitations when it comes to size or colour. Britannia’s New Product Development Manager, Jacqui Hoctor, explains, “As a range cooker is such a style statement, it is essential for manufacturers to offer a selection of options suitable for any style of home.” From patterned finishes and compact sizes to colour-matching services allowing customers to specify the exact colour customers want, could made-to-measure appliances be next? Whilst no one can determine if a trend is here to stay, it has certainly made its mark on appliance manufacturers across Europe and if the demand for homely, iconic appliances continues, who knows what could happen in the next decade. Perhaps you might need to dig out that shellsuit after all.

oodgrain is certainly no stranger in the kitchen and it’s clear to see why its unwavering popularity spanning over two decades may have led some companies to rest on its design laurels. But it would seem that wood-based panel manufacturer, Egger, has rewritten the woodgrain rulebook. Once known for its smooth and sleek finish, woodgrains are now bringing us one step closer to nature. Expressed through texture, Egger’s designs offer an uncanny likeness to real wood by infusing rustic elements, subtle markings and inviting Walnut, Plum and Oak colours in its 20-strong collection. Elliott Fairlie, Furniture Marketing Coordinator for Egger UK, adds, "Dramatic new prints and advances in surface textures make these décors look incredibly realistic, giving designers the confidence to change the way they are used in kitchen applications and put them centre-stage." Its reworking of a classic décor has seen the role of woodgrain in the kitchen change. With a rise in sophisticated, solid colour frontals, manufacturers and customers are looking for ways to incorporate both colour and texture into their designs - with the addition of natural woodgrains as worktops. Elliott adds, “Used in combination with matching splashbacks and up-stands, we are seeing a new twist to individuality and the mix & match concept.” The new collection, which has all been designed with complementary door combinations in mind, comes with a 10-year guarantee and includes a variety of woodgrain designs that are in keeping with this growing trend. t is often said that we - the general public - focus on the here and now, offering little thought for the future. But for surface-specialist Cosentino, its inspiring designs, which capture the trends of today, are created using the futuristic manufacturing techniques of tomorrow. Composed of 75% recycled raw materials, ECO by Cosentino captures the company’s mind-set perfectly. The award-winning worktop uses salvaged mirrors, glass from windows and bottles and porcelain from china, tiles, sinks and even toilets, to create a durable worktop with high stain, scratch and scorch resistance. The accredited design, which boasts four new colours - Grey Moss, Creamstone, Red Pine and Forest Snow - mixes recycled content with other material, like stone waste and is bonded together with a part eco-resin, which contains 22% corn oil. This pioneering resin, which to Cosentino’s knowledge is unmatched in the market, is the result of a major research and development initiative. By re-using recycled materials, Cosentino is “upcycling” products that have reached the end of their lifecycle and would end up in landfill sites. Instead, Cosentino has created a sustainable and stylish design. Its Silestone® quartz worksurfaces also offer a range of futuristic features. Composed of over 90% natural quartz crystals and only three other natural minerals - diamond, sapphire and topaz, all harder than quartz - Silestone® claims to have four to five times the flexural strength of granite, whilst offering advanced bacteriostatic protection and a high resistance to scratches, stains and heat. Available in over 60 distinctive through-body colours, which offer a shade and tone consistency that is not found in natural stone, the collection is completed with three finishes - Polished, Suede (matt) and Volcano (textured). Silestone® slabs without joints are available in two sizes (1.38 x 3.04m and 1.57 x 3.25m) and three thicknesses; 1.2, 2 and 3cm. Silestone® tiles are also available in five sizes – 60 x 30cm, 60 x 40cm, 60 x 60cm, 40 x 40cm, 30 x 30cm – which are all included in Cosentino’s ten-year warranty. installer ready H
ot on the heels of its launch last November, Bushboard has released its newly upgraded ‘installer-ready’ M-Stone range of quartz worksurfaces, which draws on feedback from retailers and over 500 installers who have attended Bushboard’s free one-day training and installation courses. The new surfaces, which are now available in a modish grey Pewter Stone and contemporary neutral Almond Stone, reflect the top six selling colours in the quartz sector - illustrated in Bushboard’s extensive market research. In addition, its new 20mm thickness, which is seen to be the standard thickness in the quartz market, makes the material lighter and easier to install. The company’s strategic approach with M-Stone puts the installation firmly in the hands of retailers, giving direct control of the worktop fitting to their own installers. It overturns the traditional template-fabricate-fit route, enabling M-Stone to be fitted, shaped, cut and routed in just one day. Retailers gain from tighter project control, faster completion and enhanced margins from the self-fit. Bushboard’s Managing Director, Stuart White adds, “Templating and waiting is a thing of the past now as the market increases its awareness of the ‘installer ready’ benefits available. If an installer can fit laminate worktops, then he can train to fit our quartz ones too by joining one of our free training days, making this a great product for retailers to offer today’s design to the value conscious consumer.” Supporting the launch is a newly designed POS package, which is being merchandised to Bushboard’s registered 1,600 retailers nationwide. It is also available to new retailers interested in working with the brand. The POS package includes a brand new 20-page consumer brochure with inspirational photography, a counter-top sample display and a reference binder. There is also a 24-hour free sample service for consumers. For more information on M-Stone, please call 01933 232 272, email help@bushboard.co.uk or visit www.bushboard.co.uk

t is often said that when in times of crisis, people revert back to what they know. And it would seem that in the midst of a recession the KBB industry has been gripped by gloss, unwilling to stray too far from its simplistic design and pure completion. But, as the post-recession shackles begin to loosen, we’re seeing the reinvention of texture as we go back to nature with Egger. No stranger to texture, wood-panel manufacturer, Egger has been at the forefront of its playful revival, introducing three new woodgrain decors to its UK stock range. Following the success of its saw-cut Grey Bardolino Oak, which has proven a popular choice in kitchen design, Egger has created an earthly palate of Natural Bardolino Oak (H1145 ST10) and Truffle Brown Bardolino Oak (H1158 ST10) to add warmth and depth to its surface designs. All created with a unique combination of knots, pronounced planking and saw cuts, each finish offers a more playful and soft design, compared to textures seen in the late 90s and distressed looks recently favoured by component suppliers. Its authentic and natural look not only looks and feels like untreated wood, it also cleverly partners with a wide range of neutral solid colours making this look elegant and timeless. “The authentic appearance of the three Bardolino Oak décors epitomises what can now be achieved with our wood reproductions,” explains Elliott Fairlie, Furniture Marketing Co-ordinator for Egger UK. “With its complementary surface texture (ST10), these striking décors stay in keeping with the

top rough cut trends that were evident at Interzum but also offer an exclusive appearance which is softer and more versatile.” In keeping with the KBB sector’s move away from creams, Egger has introduced a range of neutral, solid colours including its warming Cashmere (U702 ST9) - that combines effortlessly with other neutral solids, on its own - to create a sophisticated and contemporary feel - or with authentic woodgrains such as the new Bardolino Oaks. Elliott adds, “The importance of neutral solid colours continues to increase, with natural and muted tones proving popular.” Ideal for combining with natural woodgrains, not only is the proportion of these solid colours in furniture design increasing but it is becoming the starting point in many design decisions. Egger’s range of inspiring designs don’t stop there. A surprising addition to the range is the new Sand Provencial Elm design (H1725 ST10). A less complex wood when compared to oak, Egger’s woodgrain’s demonstrate that even Elm can follow the current demand for authentic surfaces. With natural features and the depth of a decor pattern, it gives the viewer the impression of an untreated wood surface and gains the perfect feel with the ST10 authentic texture. To experience the realistic look and feel of Egger’s new surface range for yourself, order a sample online today. ounded by Dave Conn and Ian Hall in 1989, Utopia has come a long way from the two-man furniture making business it once was. Today, the name ‘Utopia’ is renowned with manufacturers and retailers alike, as a long-standing industry leader of bathroom furniture. “It all began to take shape at the 1996 KBB exhibition,” recalls Dave Conn, Joint Managing Director of Utopia. “We had an overwhelming response to our products and we knew immediately that there was a gap in the market for high-quality bathroom furniture.” Proud to be British, both men were keen to keep production in the UK. Today, the company prides itself on manufacturing all its furniture in the UK and works in partnership with key suppliers and retailers to create on-trend, made-to-measure pieces. “By working this way, we can ensure Utopia maintains its high product standards and offers the best service in the market,” adds Ian Hall. The Wolverhampton-based company also has an active environmental policy, recycling a high proportion of its waste materials and flying a flag for the use of materials from responsibly maintained sources. This approach has seen Utopia survive and grow through two recessions. Thanks to the company’s NPD department - which acts as a hub for all Utopia’s ideas and future developments - customer feedback

gets back to where it counts and levels of customer satisfaction have never been higher. On the back of this, Utopia has expanded its portfolio to include sanitaryware, baths, tiles and brassware and, responding to customer demand, it has recently launched a brand new bathroom design tool, Visualise. Designed to make it even easier for retailers to service customers, the online tool visually demonstrates Utopia’s extensive range of furniture, worktops, tiles, door styles and accessories, making it easier than ever to design the perfect bathroom. “We listened to our customers,” says Dave. “With limited showroom space and endless bathroom combinations, we all know how difficult it is to demonstrate the bathroom options available to customers and how their preferred choices will actually look in their own bathroom. Visualise aims to change all that. With an image of a standard sized British bathroom,
ensuite and cloakroom, along with a modular roomset, customers will be armed with all the tools they need to make informed choices about their purchase.” But Utopia’s developments don’t stop there. Its 7,000ft2 showroom - which is open to both retailers and their customer - showcases Utopia’s wide range of bathroom furniture and accessories. From its newly extended furniture collections (Haddon, Halo and Symmetry) to its fresh new colour palettes and finishes for 2013, it offers a space to simply show off the company’s accomplishments. And rightly so. But what’s next for Utopia? Helen Clark - Marketing Manager at Abode - talks taps, trends and water saving. What styles are the brassware market favouring at the moment? In the main the market is still heavily swayed towards the modern/contemporary style solution. However, there has, and always will remain, that niche market of the traditional sector, due mainly in part to the style of the associated housing stock. In terms of providing a solution these sit nicely in a marketplace which we feel is having a particular resurgence, but also in creating something different, which is what we at Abode, like to do. There are a number of truly traditional styled brassware suppliers out there but we felt there was an opportunity to sit within the middle ground and design a solution that provides a timeless classic offering. Something not overly ornate, but not too contemporary either. Are there any emerging trends in the market? Affordable design is a term we use a lot, but we’re finding that it’s more and more important to have a spread of styles and solutions across all price ranges, ensuring there’s an affordable range for everyone. Another trend that continues is space-saving solutions and being able to provide smaller brassware options is as important now as ever before. How is Abode bridging the gap between style and practicality? I think it’s something we’ve always looked at. We have always tried to consider the user when designing new products. Ensuring ranges and solutions match perfectly with UK systems, whether that be by the products available within the ranges or by trying to optimise product performance - or whether it be by its styling and ensuring ease of usability or flexible and adaptable products that can suit multiple users within the home.

Is water saving an important focus when creating new designs? UK water shortages have moved from being the freak to the norm in more and more areas throughout the UK. We are now using on average 140 litres of water per day, 70% more than 30 years ago. This dramatic increase in water usage has not been matched by an increase in water treatment and availability leading to this nonsustainable resource limited supply. As water users and as a brassware manufacturer, it is our responsibility to recognises the importance of conserving water within the home and offer a wide range of products to limit water wastage. Flow restrictors and a jet spray eradicator are just two of the products we sell that can make a home waste less water. Opinion on what to look out for in 2014 Water saving is going to be big news in 2014 and the technology behind it will be the key drivers within the sector.

MIRA’S TOP 10 FEATURES FOR DIGITAL SHOWERS 1. Adjustable location for valve The valve for a digital shower does not have to be sited next to the shower: you can put it up to 10 metres away from the controller. The valve can be in the loft, under a bath, in a cupboard underneath the washbasin - anywhere that is convenient to the customer.
2. Adjustable location for the controller The controller - or user interface - sets the temperature, flow and duration and does not have to be next to the shower. So it can be put wherever the customer decides is most convenient. In some cases the user interface can be portable and used as a remote control, so it does not require any installation.
3. Up, down, high, low Digital showers should be versatile and the best provide a choice of supply and pressure installation options; so there’s a choice between either ceiling or rear fed fitting and a selection of high pressure valves for mains pressurised systems or combination boilers or pumped valves for low pressure or gravity fed systems.
4. Fully functional control The whole point of a digital shower is to have sophisticated controls so that the user can get exactly the shower they want. And that requires a digital control that is fully functional, one that does rather more than turn the shower on or off. The control should enable the customer to programme it for a number of function such as shower duration, maximum and minimum temperatures and flow rates, as well as a warm up mode and an eco mode.
5. Maximum temperature adjustment on controller The user - within safe bounds - should be able to set their own maximum temperature limits. If they cannot, then the installer will have to set the maximum temperature in advance in the valve assembly and any future adjustment will be inconvenient to the installer.
se digital value Mira Platinum Dual is designed to offer a multi-outlet showering experience where the deluge head and handset can be used independently or together.
6. Adjustable flow control The choices offered by digital showers make it plain that the control should not be a single lever and that the temperature and flow controls should be separate so that users have greater convenience and flexibility to set the shower that’s ‘right’ for them.
7. Warm Up Mode Ever got in the shower and spent the first few moments experiencing that early burst of ‘dead leg’ cold water? Well, this function allows the user to avoid that by running the shower for a short period in anticipation.
8. Digital display Strangely, some digital showers do not display digitally. This makes it difficult for the user to appreciate what settings have been programmed and which ones are operational at the time of use.
9. Clock display Many consumers are concerned about shower duration - either programmed in, or by keeping a weather eye on the clock - because the shower is one of the last things they do before getting dressed and leaving the house. And, since the shower is digital and should have a digital display, there is no reason it shouldn’t have a clock too.
10. Extra remote controllers If there is a portable controller for the shower then it makes sense to have more than one, as anyone with family and a cordless phone or remote controller will understand. Mira’s digital showers offer you programmable functions to suit your lifestyle, including warmup mode, clock display and eco settings.

stablished in 1991, RAK Ceramics has become one of the world's largest manufacturers of ceramic and porcelain tiles. For bathroom specialists – and now contract specialists - there’s plenty of news that will help boost sales in the UK. Based in Ras-Al-Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates, the company has grown at an astonishing rate and now occupies a site in excess of 2 million m2, producing over 3.5 million pieces of sanitary ware and 115 million m2 of tiles per annum. In addition to tiles, RAK’s range includes ceramic sinks, sanitaryware, brassware and acrylic baths, with products currently exported to more than 150 countries. UK Managing Director, Rob Jull, says this is an especially exciting time for RAK UK. Growth may have slowed but turnover and profitability have been “positive” and this year is looking “very promising”. Some of this is due to what he calls RAKextra. RAKextra has been driven by Sales Director, Alvin Biggs, whose past experience in the showers, mirrors and cabinets market has enabled the company to expand into all these new product areas.
Page 3
Alongside these developments, RAK has been working on a new product range which is set to be launched in the NEC at KBB 2014 next March. “Our business has always been very much focussed on bathroom specialists,” says Rob, “But this time we have not only produced a version for our retailers but also for the commercial sector, particularly hotels. The range begins with a staggering 18 pieces of ware and a comprehensive offering in modular, luxury furniture. “The other important factor is the introduction of our latest RAK Rimless 2 WC pan design, which is used for all WCs throughout the range. The benefits of RAK Rimless have proved themselves over the past two years and RAK Rimless 2 provides a much more aesthetically pleasing version to the end user.” RAK’s new edition RAKRIMLESS™ Compact Deluxe WC offers a host of benefits – in terms of health, hygiene, ease of maintenance, the environment and accessibility. It also features a stylish contemporary design – and, confirms Rob, it is the most competitively-priced quality rimless WC on the market. The rimless format
For a polished application, RAK's Orion 'White Smoke' created a stunning, spa-like feel with its authentic grey veined marble appearance. Designs are available in an on-trend 60 x 60cm format as well as 49.4 x 99cm and 99 x 99cm slab upon request.

Suitable for wall and floor application, RAK's Sandust design is offered in a 30 x 60cm and 60 x 60cm format. Sandust's landscape-inspired design is achieved using the latest ink jet technology to create great depth and an authentic colour pallet.

eliminates the need for a hidden rim or channel. On flushing, water is fired from three separate jets, which ensures that the whole surface of the pan is cleaned, both vertically and horizontally. As germs cannot collect under a rim, the completely visible surface is easy to clean and the need to direct cleaning products under hidden channels is completely eliminated. The ‘new edition’ model features a quick-release soft seat, so areas under hinges can be easily cleaned. There’s even a taller, 45cm comfort height pan, designed with wheelchair users in mind. The close-coupled back-to-wall toilet also complies with the Department of Health’s HTM64 Standard, is WRAS (Water Regulations Approved Scheme) approved and has a dual flush, which cuts water usage by a third. RAK has also re-launched its shower enclosure range this year, including many features which are considered luxury extras in other brands, such as self-cleaning glass on both 6mm and 8mm ranges. “The bathroom collection isn’t the only area to see change,” continues Rob. “Large format porcelain tiles in Cementina, White Smoke and Sandust all encompass stunning natural finishes with realistic price tags. Even our comprehensive fireclay sink range is undergoing reviews, with at least eight new models being developed during 2014.” RAK UK’s 2014 catalogue, which is set to exceed 100 pages, will include all new products - and its revised Virtual World software, already used by many dealers, will also be demonstrated at KBB and launched online in time for the show. pelipal hits the mark C The Balto collection features simple cubic shapes with concealed under basin lighting. Mirrored cabinets with wall hung storage units provide copious storage for all bathroom essentials.
ompetition is high when it comes to bathroom furniture, but what makes one design stand above the rest? Pelipal believe it’s when function, design and quality marry together. With German engineering, an astute awareness of functionality and a keen eye for the latest design trends, bathroom retailers can offer their consumers something that fits the brief beautifully, thanks to Pelipal’s inspiring collection.
Function There is nothing that spoils a striking design more than the clutter of everyday life. There needs to be a place for everything and, with cleverly concealed storage options, Pelipal’s bathroom furniture makes sure the surfaces remain clear whilst keeping everything close by. Equally, LED lighting means the bathroom can seamlessly traverse from a functional space for applying make-up or shaving in the morning, to a restful spa-like atmosphere at night.
Design In order to meet with customer requirements, the design options on Pelipal’s bathroom furniture are vast. From neutral, statement and natural door colours to glass fronts in plain or patterned finishes, combined with angled or gently curved designs, the choice is almost endless. Make it extra personal with concealed mirrors and mirrored cabinets and statement lighting to make the design really shine.

relative newcomer to the world of bathroom distribution, Brentford-based Pangea Bathrooms has reinvented itself as a one-stop distribution company for designer bathroom products. With a company name derived from the Ancient Greek meaning “all the earth”, it would seem that Pangea’s vision to bring the bathroom world together is ambitious but far from impossible. Once a vessel to source high quality bathroom products for a select group of retailers, the company is now heading in a new direction – to produce exclusive product lines for the highstreet. Utilising his experience in the industry, newly appointed MD, Martin Chalcraft, has created a showstopping portfolio comprising of new and existing products that are only available to highstreet retailers. Offering a more comprehensive bathroom range not only simplifies the ordering process for retailers but also allows the company to continually evolve its product lines and keep abreast of future trends more efficiently. Only hand-picking the most suitable stockists, Pangea believes that its plan to manage growth and a selective product range will enable the company to maintain its customers’ needs more easily and limit unscrupulous online discounting. Keen to tackle this challenge head on, Steve Parkinson, former Sales Manager of Pura Bathrooms, has joined the Pangea team to incorporate the new strategy into the company’s day-to-day running. “It’s great to work with such a young company. We can mould it around our customers and use our product range to fight back against Internet discounters by not supplying them in the first instance,” explains Steve. Steve adds, “With online retailers aggressively attacking the high street, it’s about time we supply the tools to fight back. It’s the high street retailer that provides the inspiration and knowledge for the consumer to make an informed decision about their new bathroom – at Pangea we aim to offer the product and marketing to support our retailers from day one.” For more information on Pangea Bathrooms and its product range please call 0845 33 00 390 or visit www.pangeabathrooms.com

“Flexibility is key. Most often the smallest bathrooms are in the most awkward places, such as under the stairs or in a corner of an attic, which means there’s unlikely to be a direct connection to the soil stack. To reduce plumbing costs and fitting time, appliances that allow you to connect directly to a domestic water supply are essential.” Ann Boardman - Customer Services and Marketing Manager, Saniflo UK.
drainage so When you want a low level shower tray you want it to be exactly that, low level. This generally means that you have to excavate the floor or use a riser kit. Neither option is ideal, and, if you do need to use a riser kit or adjustable feet, you will actually be raising the overall height of the shower tray. Saniflo has a solution. Traymatic is a shower tray at only 46mm high and is supplied with either an internal or external pump, which sits above floor level thereby negating the need to either raise the tray up or excavate the floor. It will discharge in 22mm pipework a distance of 2.5 metres vertically and 20 metres horizontally. 020 8842 0033 www.saniflo.co.uk
With over 100 years of experience, Dallmer is often used as a drainage solution for many refurbishment projects. Flanges securing the drain to the floor are grade quartz sand coated onto epoxy glue, which gives optimal waterproof adhesion. It also includes sound insulated adjustable levelling legs as well as adjustable screws for levelling the steel cover plate. The drain body has a removable trap insert for easy cleaning and then either a stainless steel cover plate can be used or a matching tile finish. 01787 248244 www.dallmer.com

Market Insight: “In a stagnant housing market, there is a growing trend for consumers to make value-adding improvements instead of moving house. As a result, homeowners have been forced to become more creative on increasingly limited budgets. “After the kitchen, the bathroom is one area where improvements can add real value to a home and it is a room where homeowners are continuing to invest. Despite low levels of activity in new build construction, sales of towel rails have dramatically increased in the last few years – evidence of their growing popularity in the home improvement market. “The consumer appetite for electric

towel rails in particular shows no sign of waning. Simple, cheap and quick to install, electric towel rails need just a power supply and can be used all year round. For the homeowner, this makes them more efficient, cheaper to install and maintenance-free compared with wet towel rails. Crucially for the installer it means a quick, hassle-free job and there are plenty of opportunities for add-on sales too. “And now, installers can choose from a wide range of stylish designs which reflect the latest bathroom trends and consumer demands - from corner models to maximise space, stepped designs for greater towel capacity or more traditional flat designs for even towel warming and drying. Design
features like these provide further opportunity for installers to give extra ‘wow factor’ to a product that already has great appeal to customers. “Looking forward to 2014, there is no doubt that the current trend for compact, cleverly designed products for ensuites and wet rooms will continue. Homeowners want to maximise the available space and are looking for products which can deliver on both style and practicality.” Chris Stammers Marketing Director, Dimplex
