editor’s kitchen choice The new Chopin and Bach downdraft extractors from Air Uno are not only discreet in terms of what you can see, but also in terms of what you can’t. These flush-fitting models can be positioned very close to the ‘cooking action’ for rapid elimination of smoke, steam and smells. Furthermore, their advanced motors are designed to fit within the space provided by the plinth, thus leaving the units completely free for greater storage, safety and ease of use. Available in a sleek black glass finish with 4-speed touch control, the Chopin and Bach models are easy to clean and come with a liquid collection channel, automatic switch-off and are suitable for long-life charcoal filters. 0113 201 2240 • www.airuno.co.uk

The new Bal Rapid-Mat has been designed to reduce project costs. The uncoupling solution requires around 20% less adhesive than cavity uncoupling mats, which need almost ‘an extra layer of adhesive’ to fill the surface cavities or dimples. The saving amounts to using 1.5kg less adhesive per square metre, a major saving of 45kg adhesive per 30-metre roll. Ideal for any tiling project where the floor substrate may be subject to lateral movement stresses, it is covered by a full 25-year guarantee. 01782 591100 www.bal-adhesives.co.uk

After 14 months of development, this coating has been designed to avoid discolouration of the polished stainless steel to ensure these appliances remain in pristine condition for years to come. Despite being just 1-2 micron thick, the invisible coating is highly durable and is able to withstand a heat of up to 500°C, and it is also chemical, solvent and corrosion resistant. bb Birmingham closed its doors on the 5th March, surpassing high expectations following four days of first-class business. With over 300 brands on show, kbb proved an even bigger draw for its latest edition with representatives from across key multiple, independent retailers and contract buyers with John Lewis, Kitchens International, Diane Berry Kitchens, Magnet, Ikea, CP Hart, Bathstore, David Roger Associates, Antler Homes, Barratt, and Redrow Group all in attendance. Matching this was an impressive audience of 13,766 key buyers who turned out in their droves, showing support for the industry. Feedback post-kbb has also been positive, with many showing optimism for the show’s future. And why not, when the likes of Claire Surplice, Retail Chanel Manager of Ideal Standard, tell us, “It was only the first hour of the show and we’d already had lots of orders, a very busy stand and people queuing up to see our reps.” Exhibitors too reported a successful show with plenty of interest. Richard Proctor, JJO, explains, “We're on target to meet 1,000 people in 4 days.” Martin Ney of Samet adds: “The show is fast becoming one of the most important events on the European circuit.” And with the addition of 15 hours of seminars from 17 industry experts covering everything from business innovation, and social media to the latest trends in a series of thoughtprovoking talks and panel discussions, it’s clear to see why the aisles were bustling. Brand Director, Andrew Vaughan, concludes, “This year’s kbb Birmingham has been an outstanding success and I am hugely proud of the team that helped to deliver such a fantastic show. It reaffirmed that there are some incredibly innovative retailers operating across the UK and internationally that know the importance of discovering new brands at events such as ours.” Next stop, the London May Design Series that will take place on the 18th20th May.
RAK Resort - a new bathroom collection featuring next generation rimless design, Hygiene+ - has joined RAK’s Bathroom Collection. kbb is back Dallmer’s new Cerawall S and P level access shower drainage systems were displayed at kbb. The S combines the visual finish of the drainage component over a concealed drain housing with a width of only 54mm and is supplied in lengths of 800, 900, 1000 and 1200mm, whilst the Cerawall P gives the perception of it being ‘barely there’. This is achieved by locating the channel within the wall and floor joint. Practically invisible, it creates a seamless transition between the surfaces. 01787 248244 www.dallmer.com

The collection includes the SLS Surface/ Recessed Lights and the Connex Strip Light, which are available in warm white and cool white colour temperatures idea for placing under cabinets and worktops. The SLS fittings provide all the benefits associated with LEDs as they are energy efficient, reducing household bills, and last on average for around 12 and a half years, 11 years longer than outdated halogen alternatives. 0845 034 0780 www.sensio.co.uk

A personal favourite at the show, the BLANCO by GUTMANN CONECTA island hood was certainly a crowd pleaser. With an integrated loading and docking station for an iPod or iPhone, not only did the glass and brushed aluminium finish catch your attention but so did its sound quality. The hood combines ambient and LED lighting that can be changed to match your mood and the extraction between the frame and the glass offers superb functionality. It offers high air movement at 1200m3/ph for the internal and recirculating models and boasts a noise level of only 45–59db. There is also a model with an external motor offering an even more powerful extraction rate and virtually silent operation. 01923 635200 www.blanco.co.uk

xhibiting alongside sister-company Franke at kbb, Carron Phoenix was keen to demonstrate the strength and scope of its product ranges aimed at the mid-to-value sector that make it a go-to brand of choice for retailers. “Carron Phoenix has long been recognised as a brand that can be trusted to offer quality manufacturing and value for money,” explains Neil Clark, marketing director for Carron Phoenix. “As we move out of recession we want to reaffirm those values and how they benefit retailers.” Underlining its commitment to the retail sector, Carron’s Sink & Tap Value Packs has been price pegged at 2013 levels to remain competitive – great news for the retailer. New additions to the offer include the Janus synthetic inset range,
which gives customers a coloured sink in a stylish modern design without the unattainable price tag. Finished with a durable coating, it is available in two colours, Graphite and Arctic White (pictured) and comes in a spacious single and 1.5 bowl model that fit a 500mm and 600m cabinet. MISTRAL from Karonia has previewed its extended range of 25mm solid surfaces. Available from April, the new colours Anise, Prism and Orka - invite designers to use the new additions to create strong colour statements and interesting material combinations in the kitchen. With no MDF or particleboard substrate, the material combines the practicality and freedom of an acrylic-based solid surface with the charm of natural stone. Dick Powell (left) comments on the creation of Ideal Standard’s new Dea collection.
“The most important task designers have is striving to make products and services better for people. Function should never be sacrificed on the altar of form. Design is not Art. It’s a commercial act - we are, don’t forget, commissioned to make things better for business. For me, design is inseparable from innovation. New ideas and technologies inspire me because they enable change. “Over the last 20 years the bathroom market has become saturated with modernist/minimalist products that have become ever more geometric, harder, less friendly and less feminine in the process and in some ways less human too. I too love the purity and simplicity of these ideals and their potential for zen-like calmness, but I don’t think it necessarily means denying softer, more curved solutions which, to many, feel more comfortable and appropriate in the intimate space of the bathroom. “Working closely with Ideal Standard, we put a lot of work into a shared understanding of the social and market context for this new range. We synthesised all of that into the words ‘Accessible Beauty’ which captured what we aspired to achieve. Accessible in that it should be affordable and accessible in the sense that it is approachable, useable, practical, comfortable and ergonomic. Surprisingly, beauty is not a word designers use much (being too often ‘in the eye of the beholder’ and hard to rationalise!). But it speaks to two important aspirations: first, it implies a classic resolution of form with elegance and poise, balanced proportions, simplicity and flowing surfaces and lines. And second, the word implies a sense of softness and femininity, which is so important in the intimate environment of the bathroom.

Exclusively available to retailers, Ideal Standard has launched its new bathroom collection, Dea. Following the trend towards organic and round shapes, the range is characterised by its soft and flowing design. It includes hand wash basins, vanities, pedestal and semi-pedestal basins as well as semi-countertop and vessel versions. There are three WC options, close coupled, back to wall and wall hung, along with a choice of floor-standing and wallhung bidets. Units are available in four finishes including Walnut. A mirror and accessory range is also available. 01482 346461 www.ideal-standard.co.uk
“We steered away from completely soft, undisciplined forms because they lack the structure which leads the eye into harmony and an understanding of what we see. We were drawn to the Trapzio: a shape derived from a geometrically pure trapezoid, but radiused in its corners and softened in its curves. This gave us the visual discipline that the range needed, but was flexible enough to be adapted to its functionally different products. This, alongside its human-like traits, has resulted in the collection we see today. I truly hope that people enjoy using the bathroom as much as I did creating it.”

isitors new and old were invited to ‘B A Part of it’ on BA’s impressive kbb 2014 stand. The message was clear. “It's time for the industry to embrace the future and with BA by your side the future has never looked brighter,” explains David Caulfield, Sales and Marketing Director of BA. On show was BA’s new range of doors. 14 designs made their debut including the new Lacarre lacquered door collection and four synchronised print doors from the Malton range. Officially launching in April, samples will be available to new and existing dealers from the end of March. A unique partnership between BA Components, Unilin and Hettich also saw the ClicBox By BA on display, highlighting the manufacturers’ complete kitchen offering. The unique concept, which will be fully available from April, combines the ease of ClicBox’s tool-less assembly, the German quality and reliability of the Hettich drawer box and hinge systems and the expanding Pronto By BA frontal range. Zip’s Retail Manager, Jason MacDonald, demonstrating the company’s newest design.
Zip’s newly launched HydroTap Sparkling All-in-One.
Enough filtered boiling water to make 800 cups of tea - all for just £1. I thought that would get your attention. Zip launched its new HydroTap Sparkling All-in-One design at kbb Birmingham.
I
t would seem that the humble tap has been trumped once more with the launch of Zip’s HydroTap Sparkling Allin-One design. No longer content with supplying just filtered cold and boiling water, the updated design can now also produce sparkling water too. Ideal for multi-tasking home owners and budding chefs alike, the handy tap can be fitted in place of a mixer and thanks to a swivel action tap, can be installed at a two-bowl sink too. To make installing even easier you can connect the tap to the mains hot and cold pressure supply or, eliminating the need for connection to a separate water supply, a vented model which mixes both cold and boiling water is also available.
Its clever features don’t stop there. With energy efficiency at the forefront of every homeowners mind, the new tap has been designed to be four times more energy efficient than a standard kettle. Its Power-Pulse™ technology reduces the energy needed to heat the water by giving a boost to stored water at intervals. This not only saves energy throughout the day but also allows you to have a permanent supply of hot water at your fingertips. The all-in-one tap includes a futuristic light sensor on the rear of the tap that sends the system into sleep mode whenever the room goes dark. And for those with children, it would seem that Zip has safety well and truly
covered too. Thanks to the tap’s insulation, it always remains cool to the touch, even whilst using the boiling water function. A fingertip control safety lock, which requires a number of touches to turn off, also gives greater peace of mind, whilst its coveted straight pour fills without splashing. You can also select what temperature the water is stored at a real plus when advising on home and workplace installations that may have different needs. Zip’s products adhere to Part G and Part G3 legislation for water storage and are available to order now. For more information visit www.zipheaters.co.uk or call 0845 6 005 005.

franke on show Franke showed no signs of slowing down at this year’s kbb with the launch of six new sink ranges, seven new tap models, two new hoods and a new Fragranite sink colour.
’M ‘
ore in store’ may well be the name of Franke’s recently launched retailer-focused campaign but the title summed up the manufacturer’s kbb stand perfectly. It was a pretty remarkable stand, showcasing a multitude of new sinks, taps and hoods for the first time. And if the sheer volume of new products didn’t bowl you over as soon as you walked onto the stand, the team’s enthusiasm and excitement towards Franke’s continual product advancement was inspiring. Developed on the back of international trend research by its in-house design centre in Switzerland, there were several new additions to Franke’s premium Specialist Range. As the kitchen sink area becomes more of a multi-tasking workcentre and wet zone for washing up and food preparation, Franke’s new Largo Workcentre stainless steel low profile sink has been designed to make everyday tasks simpler. Largo, together with the new streamlined Hydros range, features the new and unique push-button pop up waste. It pushes up the strainer basket offering a more precise action to allow water to drain away, rather than the usual twist and turn action by hand. The recent collaboration with Villeroy & Boch saw
the eye-catching Aspen ceramic single bowl sink make its first public appearance, whilst the new Oyster granite colour was a clear favourite with visitors. Franke’s Pro-Value range has also been strengthened with the addition of the stainless steel sink, Galileo and the new Tectonite synthetic inset sink, Orion. Its design integration message also extends to Franke’s kitchen hoods with the launch of the Sinos hood, which features a raised glass panel in black or white glass and the updated Roller kitchen hood that now offers black glass panels in the centre. Keen to offer a broader range of styles and price points, Franke’s new taps are a mix of contemporary and traditional styling. From the new artisan-style Augusta and the Moritz with its white ceramic-effect levers, to the swan neck two lever Athena and elegant Vesta, Franke’s kbb display proved that consumers can have affordable access to the company’s design and product quality. With its updated product range and raft of initiatives aimed at benefitting retailers, there’s definitely More in Store at Franke. For more information, visit www.franke.co.uk or call 0161 436 6280.

kbb Birmingham was the launch pad for InHouse’s innovative new marketing tool package designed to help Schüller retailers grow.
a recipe for success K itchen and bathroom dealers are becoming yesterday’s corner shops,” begins Stuart Dance, Sales Director of InHouse. “There was once a small convenience store on every corner but with the introduction of large supermarket giants, shops soon went into sharp decline. The same principal can be applied to the KBB sector. Smaller retailers are being overshadowed by bigger sheds.” Passionate about helping the smaller kitchen retailer become the consumers’ first port of call, the InHouse team have created three simple, step-by-step marketing packages that, with help from kitchen manufacturer Schüller, will help retailers compete with larger chains. Ranging in price to suit any budget, each comprehensive package helps retailers market their business effectively. Stuart explains, “The packages contain vital marketing material including leaflet templates, window vinyls and prompt stickers that are not only designed to attract more people into your showroom, but its message will also help to educate the consumer on the Schüller brand and what it
represents.” InHouse’s imaginative marketing plan doesn’t stop there. Every Schüller customer will receive a mouth-watering recipe book to accompany their new kitchen alongwith their very own ‘Come Dine With Me’ inspired launch party pack - perfect for anyone looking to show off their new Schüller kitchen and cause kitchen envy amongst friends and family. Retailers will also be enrolled onto the InHouse lead distribution programme, which means any relevant inbound leads generated from the national PR and advertising campaign will be directed to nearby retailers as a new business lead at no extra cost and, for those worried about designing their own adverts, Schüller‘s ready-to-use templates have been created to make life easier. There is also a team of techsavvy people on hand to help you every step of the way. ushboard had a dedicated stand for its premium Nuance bathroom surfacing range of wall panels and worksurfaces. The focus was on showing retailers the design flexibility and commercial relevance of the Nuance range as a growing alternative to tiles. As well as offering a 100% waterproof guarantee without the use of extrusions, it has upped the ante by recently adding 15 new designs, including eight True Scale effects that realistically mirror the luxury of granite and marble. The new designs also mark a departure on the established gloss texture by featuring radiance and honed textures that enhance the designs with a greater level of visual and tactile authenticity. Compared to natural stone or granite, laminate designs such as this offer the advantages of easy care and maintenance, faster installation and an unrivalled cost benefit. To highlight its benefits in your store a fully updated POS package, which includes new 38-page colour brochures, swatches, sampling and graphics for the display stand, is now available to retailers. Display deals for room sets are available too.

he Showerwall brand of wall panelling showcased six exciting new décors at this year’s kbb, reflecting the trends for natural marbles and luxurious statement stones in bathroom interiors. The six new additions extend the range to 39 laminate designs and reflect the continued market demand for easy-living neutrals with Natural Marble Gloss, Rustic Travertine Gloss and Bianco Stardust but also the growing trend for bolder statement stones such as Breccia, Grigio Marble and Black Wave. Available in a mixture of gloss and matt texture, Showerwall has responded to the increasing trend for tactile matt surfaces in wall panelling with a focus on easy maintenance and high performance. Claire Lambert, Brand Director for Showerwall, adds, “The original design range has performed extremely well for us
and is continuing to be part of our 2014 collection because we believe the market has a four-year cycle and they remain very design relevant. Our current range has given us the market knowledge and experience to broaden our offer with designs that we’re confident will be appealing and reflect the ongoing popularity of natural marbles, as well as the emerging trend for bolder looks with statement stones.” Panels are available in either square cut or tongue & groove panels 2440mm high. Tongue & groove comes in one width of 600mm as standard, however it is available in all sizes on request, while the square cut panels offer the flexibility of 900, 1200 and a 1000mm panel to eliminate wastage. InHouse has invested over £35,000 in creative artwork, ideas and developing signage, branded products and giveaways a figure many independent retailers would find impossible. “We presented three comprehensive packages to retailers,” explains Wayne. “The first of these was free for those who signed up at the show with the next two heavily discounted. So if any retailer visited and was impressed but didn't sign-up, as long as we scanned you at the show you can still take advantage of this one-off opportunity. an elite I
t was a concept that was 10 years in the making. After spending what felt like an eternity working in finance, former Mortgage Advisor Alan Richards felt like he was stuck in a career rut and was ready for a new challenge. With little more than an avid interest in craft, design and technology, Alan, and his wife Adrianna, took the plunge into the world of kitchen design. In July 2013, Elite Kitchen Designs was born with Alan firmly at the helm. To many, giving up a secure job and starting a business in a completely different sector might seem like a pretty audacious move. "Not only is there a fear of the unknown but there are some pretty important financial implications to consider too,” explains co-owner Alan. “Whilst daring, every move my wife and I have made has been calculated thoroughly,” something that has undoubtedly been drilled into Alan during his lengthy career in finance. The husband and
wife duo spent the best part of a year hunting out the most suitable location to start their business before settling on Christchurch, Dorset. And, during the nine months they spent negotiating with Elite’s previous owners, nothing was left to chance. “I spent a number of months learning the ropes with the company’s previous owner who was set to retire after 30 years in the industry. Having his knowledge of the industry by my side was invaluable. When I finally took hold of the reins back in July, I was inundated with reps trying to sell me their products. With so many design options on the market I spent a lot of time summing up individual samples. Would I want this design in my home? Would I pay this much for it? The task of compiling an eclectic mix of kitchen door designs had all of a sudden become a humongous challenge. I knew what I wanted - I just needed to find it,” recalls Alan.

family This is when Ney really came into its own. Alan explains, “What really started as an impromptu visit from one of Ney’s salesmen soon turned into a great working relationship. Ney’s door experts quickly got to grips with the ethos of the company. They understood that, whilst neutral, nonoffensive designs would always have a place in my showroom, I was keen to offer my customers something a little different. I wanted to find something that really stood out and made people stop and stare - after all, isn't that the idea of a kitchen showroom?” Whilst impressed with Ney’s newly updated DeNovo acrylic range, it was Ney’s Magic range of metallic doors that drew Alan in further. “They’re just so different,” Alan says enthusiastically. “They immediately caught my attention so I knew they would make a fantastic window display.” Showcasing Ney’s Magic Door Collection in Bronze and Gold, Elite Kitchen Designs’ new kitchen display has truly captivated its customers.
“Before I asked Ney to fit the Magic display, customers would come straight to the sales desk - bypassing several kitchen displays on route. Now, people can’t help but explore Ney’s kitchen before coming to talk to us. This is exactly the type of response I was looking for. It offers the ‘wow’ factor and gets people’s design juices going.” The completed window display couldn’t have come at a better time for the Dorset-based showroom. After a recordbreaking month in January, with over 20 quotes completed in the first week of the year, interest in the newly-established independent retailer is growing. Alan adds, “Just like another member of the family, Ney has been on hand to help answer any questions and to offer advice. As Elite Kitchen Designs continues to grow, this relationship will remain an invaluable part of our success.” For more information about Ney’s door collection please visit www.ney.co.uk or alternatively call 024 7630 8100 for a free Ney Door Collection brochure.

CF has released its latest Kitchen Door Portfolio for 2014. As well as presenting a selection of stunning room set images to showcase its eye-catching designs, the new format includes the very latest door styles and finishes on the market and highlights the design options available. Among the new styles showcased are the Vancouver and Ruskin, part of the Goscote made-to-measure kitchen doors range. Perfectly suited to recreate the popular country-style kitchen, both designs offer an alternative to the painted effects that are currently on the market. On the other end of the design spectrum, Elle offers a minimalistic, handleless style which, when partnered with a bold colour choice or natural woodgrain finish can create a modern, sleek design, whilst its brand new Orion design offers an ultra-modern twist on a traditional, shaker design. Phill Hoggar, Door Product Manager, adds: “Our Kitchen Door Portfolio forms part of ECF’s commitment to sourcing and supply quality products at competitive prices. Our ongoing product development programme means that we are continually looking for new ideas and sources of inspiration to create the very latest products and designs - keeping them at the forefront of furniture design.” For more information please contact ECF on 01664 424288 or visit www.ecf.co

More than ever before, tastes in cabinetry have converged. There is still a wealth of choice, but fivepiece and slab doors, increasingly handleless, account for a disproportionate slice of the market between them. And because of this, the need for choice and differentiation in other areas has also reached an unprecedented peak. Bespoke sizes, a choice of curves and colour-matching services are no longer the preserve of the high end. They have become essential tools for the retailer, and need to be offered on short lead times. There is no reason why quality should suffer as a result of this new reality. Poor quality comes from substandard equipment, quality control and logistics. The sort of choice now available to the mass market in kitchens is merely in line with the choices and flexibility which consumers expect in other areas of their lives. The key opportunity differentiation for fitted furniture now lies in the finish. Woodgrain and colours make equal claims to the consumer’s attention, particularly because of trends in kitchen design. The popularity of specifying an island with contrasting wall units means buyers are not forced to choose between a woodgrain or solid colour, but can have a bit of both in perfect harmony. The use of woodgrain helps the kitchen blend with other living areas, which is another reason why it is holding its own. One new theme attracting the attention of consumers looking for something a bit different is rustic timber in a modern context, with finishes starting to veer towards strongly figured woodgrains, bleaching, plank effects and the distressed look. Oak is a strong contender but even pine is showing signs of a revival. Embossed finishes are also on the rise, giving a fresh, tactile dimension. As for colours, the white slab door is still very important. Grey and brown are the emerging colours at all price points, and this goes for woodgrains as well as solid colours. Grey and brown might not sound like a cheerful prospect, but the reality is that it actually works very well and makes for a sophisticated look. Within these themes, the gloss look is here to stay, but matt is coming through strongly. Demand varies considerably across the country. Floods and economic prosperity have not been dealt out equally, although low interest rates and a cautious level of optimism mean there is business out there to be had. But we need to meet and exceed expectations for choice and service, not just manage them.

In line with current trends, it will be introducing this year’s ‘go to’ colour, Cashmere, alongside Light Grey and a new, contemporary take on Mussel. “With a growing trend to use contrasting accent colours in the kitchen, the popularity of neutral colours to highlight these has increased further,” explains David Caulfield, Sales and Marketing Director of BA. “Used to accentuate the design styling the emergence of Cashmere, Mussel and latterly greys have taken the focus off white and cream. We realise the significance of these design trends and are determined to increase options available,” he adds. With a clear market focus, Bella By BA will also be launching new neutral alternatives. Thanks to its technically advanced Bretonstone® production line and its unique mix of 93% pure quartz and 7% of polyester resin, it has the ability to produce a surface that is not only high-impact resistant but, thanks to its dense compacted surface finish, it also offers a higher level of gloss and a more consistent finish - just what the KBB industry has been looking for. “We want this product to be used in a wide range of markets,” explains Richard Barrett, Sales Director of QFD, the exclusive UK distributor of QUARTZFORMS. “It offers great choice and can be used as kitchen and bathroom surfaces, flooring and even contemporary wall coverings. Designers want to use it because of this flexibility, whilst retailers use it on their kitchen and bathroom displays to catch customer’s attention. We believe our QUARTZFORMS engineered stone goes one step further than natural stone.” To add to its existing 40-strong designs and colours, QUARTZFORMS has introduced a range of matt and textured surface designs - OPACO and SPACCO - each offering unique characteristics that would appeal to any discerning eye. Available in 12, 20 and 30mm thicknesses from its UK distributor QFD, an additional 15,000 slabs are also available from its German production facility on a short lead-time. It has also expanded the existing Cloudy and Extreme families with the launch of two new designs, Belgian Blu and Titan. Both designs offer a contemporary take on a classic and, with a ten-year guarantee available on all QUARTZFORMS surfaces, quality is well and truly guaranteed. The Sparkle Collection, which is available exclusively in the UK and Ireland through James Latham, has been designed by industrial designer and interior architect Karim Rashid. Comprising of five vibrant shades, each design offers a subtle glittery effect that offers designers new dimensions with which to work. MARKET INSIGHT What’s the latest in funky materials and colours for the kitchen? The trend for natural-looking, neutral surfaces has been established for some time, but shows no sign of losing momentum. Those zingy, ‘look-at-me’ surfaces from the early noughties are well and truly old news and from the consumer’s perspective, I think there is a sense of wanting to buy surfaces that can be considered ‘future proof’. As such, subtle palettes of browns, creams and off-whites such as those from Caesarstone’s Supernatural Collection are extremely popular. They complement a wide range of kitchen styles and cabinetry - from contemporary, gloss finishes to traditional, painted furniture - and offer a great deal of longevity. Do you have a bestseller? We have a number of bestsellers! From our Classico Collection of surfaces, Shiitake - which is a very delicately mottled, light mushroom colour - is incredibly popular. It’s a warm colour that complements natural wood and limestone. From our new Supernatural Collection, it would have to be London Grey, which is a classic grey, with an elegance that befits its name! Are you offering surfaces with practical benefits? All Caesarstone surfaces are made from 93% natural materials; the quartz is a unique and highly sophisticated composition that is extremely durable and more than capable of standing up to the rigours of daily wear and tear. Unlike natural materials such as wood, marble or granite, quality quartz such as Caesarstone is virtually resistant to scratches and stains. It’s also completely nonporous - so it can be fitted around sinks and wet areas with confidence. Neither does it require any specialist finishing or sealing. Overall, it’s an incredibly versatile surface; very easy to keep clean - and, with a 15-year guarantee from installation - a surface that is intended to last the course. Textured, high gloss, matt… What’s proving the most popular? Surfaces such as those from our Supernatural Collection which seek to replicate both the beauty and tactility of marble - have taken the surface sector by storm. People love the neutral colour palette, but they also find the aesthetic of a surface that successfully recreates the timelessness of those classic marble colours very appealing. All the details - right down to delicate veining are there - and the Collection has been a real hit since it was launched last year.

The IONIC collection is a brand of easy-fit shower enclosures specifically designed for plumbers and installers. Created by Merlyn Showering, the Wetroom Panel system is an ingenious compilation of modular based shower walls and panels. The rationale behind the launch is simple; every wetroom space is different and by using an integrated system a plumber or installer can build a wetroom from any combination of the 10 components. There are four main products in the range; showerwall, walk in, walk-in with swivel panel and cube. Despite the simplicity of the range the models are highly specified with polished chrome fittings, Mershield protective coating and 8mm toughened glass. 00353 56 779 1555 • www.ionicshowering.com
An example of a wetroom designed by Abacus Direct.
SHOWERING SOLUTIONS “Wetrooms offer a huge number of advantages for the end user but they are often seen as a difficult option by specifiers, installers and others in the bathroom industry due to a perception that they are difficult to install and are a recipe for leaks and callbacks. Quite the reverse is true. Wetrooms need not be difficult to install, do not require specialist contractors and can provide a far more satisfactory outcome, both for the installer and the end user, than a shower cubicle. “As with any other installation, wetrooms require good quality workmanship and appropriate materials but, when installed correctly, a wetroom will be far better sealed than a standard shower cubicle. In design terms, wetrooms make maximum use of space; provide contemporary style; mean there is no predetermined shower or room size; allow a wide variety of wall and floor finishes; and offer the potential of a level access floor which is ideal for the less able. “When it comes to products, it is worth looking at those that are used in commercial wetrooms: what is suitable for an upmarket gym is very likely to be suitable for Mrs Smith’s bathroom! Among these products are EPS tile backer boards which are highly waterproof as proven by their use in such environments as commercial steam rooms. “These versatile materials come complete with specialist adhesives and tapes to ensure waterproof joints. They are matched by a range of shower trays with an inbuilt fall that come complete with drain kits designed specifically for wetrooms. Unlike many similar products that have the waterproofing added over the top, these trays have an integrated waterproof coating. They are available in around 100 different styles and provide raised and level access solutions with a wide variety of drain positions as well as bespoke options. It is therefore possible to create a wetroom of any size, even where there are long drainage runs and awkward joist locations. “These products are easy to cut down on site so installing them into awkward spaces is simple. Unlike conventional trays they offer insulating properties so are warmer to the touch. They are also light in weight, making handling easy for one person and allowing them to be moved into awkward spaces. “While it is not necessary to be a specialist specifier or contractor or have special skills or tools, it is important to understand the principles behind installation and to follow instructions properly. Manufacturers of these products provide DVDs and booklets describing the installation procedure along with full technical backup, including calculating all the components required to create your perfect wetroom.”

affordable design F
or too long design has been quantified by its price tag. The bigger the budget, the more stylish the bathroom. But Trend Interiors has disregarded this concept by creating a bathroom collection that not only offers a competitive price point for those with a smaller budget but also offers the style and flexibility of a high-end bathroom. The Trend Bathroom Collection includes a range of modular bathroom designs that create a sense of stylish luxury. Contemporary slab doors and matching cabinet finishes are available in four different colourways - Matt and Gloss White, Lancaster Oak and Tobacco Walnut - whilst a selection of complementing handle options, laminate worktops, lighting, brassware, ceramics and new shower option are also available to create the perfect bathroom simply and effectively. For those with limited floor space, its modular design means that no space is wasted. With units incorporating a range of storage options including open shelves, drawers and super slim units that measure just 150mm wide, even the smallest of bathrooms can still be transformed.
Keen to appeal to retailers too, an easy-touse pricing guide that clearly bundles products together to form popular, suggested cabinet sets is also available. The range also presents modular and fitted arrangements which are supplied rigid and “ready to fit” making them easy to cost, simple to order, and easier for fitters to install. “True to its name, the Trend Bathroom collection was designed to offer an on-trend look for less,” explains Sales and Marketing Director Tim Wood. “Available from a network of showrooms nationwide, Trend offers the accessibility and price range of a mass retailer with the design expertise and customer service focus of a bathroom specialist. We also offer one of the shortest lead times in the industry at just 5 days or less for most orders and every bathroom comes with a 5-year guarantee.” For more information on the new collection visit www.trendbathrooms.co.uk or call 0800 028 4466.

The System Infinit range from VitrA is characterised by its sleek clean lines and restrained detailing. The two new mineralcast washbasins both have a very distinctive look. The first uses the expanse of the basin and simply dips in the middle to offer a very subtle look. The other basin is much more geometric and features a wedge cut out from the central area of the basin. Both basins come in two sizes; 100 and 120cm, and are available with a vanity unit in either high gloss white or a high gloss grey birch finish with a pull out drawer. 01235 750990 • www.vitra.co.uk
PRODUCT FOCUS: In the bathroom with sieger design As the creator of Duravit series, Happy D, can you explain how the design has continued to stay relevant in the market for over 15 years? The series drew its inspiration not from any specific predecessor, but rather from individual stylistic elements that have been shaping our vision of sophisticated bathrooms for decades. For example, the opulent dimensions and radii, or the characteristic rim design, are forms familiar to consumers. For Happy D, we took these features and transformed them into a new design with a flat outline, straight lines and symmetrical curves. During development, we place particular emphasis on the history and personality of a product, its typical character. Why does it make sense to revise a series rather than to develop something completely new? Time means change. As designers, we observe society, its changes and its needs perhaps more carefully than any other professional group. We see ourselves as sensors for seismic shifts in attitude, perceiving new tendencies before they have taken
shape. Our impressions and analyses determine the strategy and special lines of a product. And they show that even classics need innovation. Happy D.2 represents the new lightness. We gave the design a facelift whilst retaining its basic traits. Contemporary refinement, in every sense of the word because, thanks to the ornate lines, Happy D.2 appears much lighter and fresher than its 1998 predecessor. It also features some technical innovations. This formed new strengths. What is the particular attraction for you when designing a bathroom? What do you see as being your tasks? The bathroom and kitchen are the central rooms in houses and apartments, and all the other rooms are arranged around them. People want to spend longer in the bathroom on an emotional level, to enjoy the comfort and, at the same time, improve their health - either alone or, increasingly, also with their partner or even family. The more stressful our everyday lives, the more urgently we need places to which we can retreat and that promote both health and a higher quality of life. In addition to wellness

trends, health and wellbeing are the key themes of the next decade, perhaps even of the next generation. Hardly any other room is as central to this as the bathroom as a place for human hygiene. It continues to develop into a place of retreat, somewhere that the user can concentrate on spiritual wellbeing and relaxation rather than just on fundamental physical needs. Our task is thus to create a comfortable, pleasant environment that also supports individual processes.

Embossing: the next chapter. The fashion for texture in the form of embossed surfaces has been taken to a new level by Giorgio Levoni. By cleverly combining embossing and digital printing, the company has been able to create a range of patterns in a quite unique way for furniture and kitchen or bathroom flooring. review D The Surface Design Show is the place to go for cutting edge ideas. We’ve picked a few of the best to bring inspiration and USPs to your kitchen and bathroom designs.
espite the problems the London underground threatened to create for it, the Surface Design Show provided exhibitors and visitors with a spectacle to rival much bigger events. The Design Centre provides a cosy environment for browsing but the number of stands at this year’s event with genuinely new, interesting and quite different products compelled visitors to take a closer look. And those who did could only have been delighted at some of the gems the exhibition team had uncovered. The demand for tactile décor foils has led companies like Giorgio Levoni, Xylocleaf and Kronospan Italia to push the boundaries well beyond basic synchronisation of a print with an emboss. There was real depth and realistic feel to Kronospan’s five new Synchropore woodgrain décors, while Levoni and Xylocleaf respectively showed patterns and abstract combinations of natural products. The way surfaces play with light has become as important as the way they feel. Translucent solid surfacing materials, glass,

even translucent stone that can be formed around a curved substrate, were to be found among the stands at the Surface Design Show. Z-Clad and Decolan both offered thin stone in resin and fibreglass-backed sheets, perfect for imaginative designers. In the glass sector there were even more imaginative ideas to be found. Take a look at the ultra-green, recycled glass panels made by Bottle Alley Glass (fabulous when backlit with Appletec’s Light Sheet) and the stunning glass designs of Daedalian. And if it’s nature you want to bring to a shower screen or a splash back, Objets in Glass showcased some truly stunning ideas. Not so long ago, kitchen and bathroom tiles used to be 6” square, one colour or dappled if you were lucky. Armatile’s beautiful mosaics and Blueprint’s giant porcelain tiles show just how much technology and fashion have pushed the pace of changed. Surfaces have never been so exciting. And neither has the Surface Design Show!

dash Worksurfaces, splashbacks, screens, bar tops, decorative light panels - or simply beautiful decorative panels - whichever way you look at the products of Wetherby-based Bottle Alley Glass, they’re stunning! Unique and individual, each panel contains crushed waste glass bottles (the panel shown left was made from recycled gin bottles) which are then fused in energy efficient kilns to produce an eco-friendly solid surface. It takes four days in a kiln to fire each panel. When finished, panels can be fabricated using either traditional or modern stone masonry skills just like granite. Bottle Alley Glass say their products are harder and more stain and scratch resistant than granite and they make great alternatives to solid surfacing materials. ased in Bradford, Applelec used the Surface Design Show to exhibit its fantastic Light Sheet - a flat LED product that will enable you to illuminate shelves, mirrors, splashbacks, translucent stone and more. Guaranteed not to overheat, Light Sheet relies on a grid of machined channels to transport light from LEDs placed around the edge of the panel. Lighting across the grid is absolutely even and by covering the panel with a translucent acrylic, it becomes invisible. Battery and 12v mains systems are available.
