2010 Annual Report

he Hospital Foundation was established in 1985 to serve the Hospital by encouraging gift support from individuals and organizations. Today, the Foundation conducts annual and capital campaigns, accepts memorial and planned gifts, coordinates grant applications on behalf of the Hospital to government and private funders, and offers named gift recognition for major donors. The Foundation also oversees invested funds to ensure the long-term future of the Hospital. A Message from the Hospital President and CEO

ur Hospital recently adopted a new mission statement, to more accurately reflect where we are today, and where we’re focused for tomorrow. It says: “Our mission is to provide skilled, compassionate, cost-effective care that promotes wellness and meets community needs.” In reflecting on this new mission statement, I am reminded of how integral our donors are to our ability to fulfill this mission. In 2010, 965 donors contributed to our Hospital Foundation – the most in our Foundation’s 25-year history. Their annual contributions, totaling more than $375,000, help our Hospital to purchase new equipment, add services for our patients, and improve our facilities. In addition, more than $235,000 was donated in advance gifts towards our “Constructing Healthier Communities” Campaign; in support of the construction of the EJ Noble Annex, 49 Lawrence Avenue, and our new Center for Cancer Care. Since the Foundation was established in 1985, more than $15 million has been contributed, all for the sole benefit of our Hospital and the patients we serve. We truly would not be where we are today - “Providing skilled, compassionate, cost-effective care that promotes wellness and meets community needs” without this extraordinary community support. We offer our thanks to each of our generous donors; and invite everyone in our community to follow their good example.

James’ Mom, Peggy, also has a long history here. “She was active on the Potsdam Guild when I was growing up,” James recalls. About ten years ago Peggy became a Eucharistic Minister at Trinity Episcopal Church, and she started bringing communion to our patients. Eventually, Peggy became a Deacon of the Church, and then Deacon Vicar at St. Phillips in Norwood – a full-time job she’s just retired from. Through the years, Peggy has been very active on the Hospital’s Spiritual Care Committee, and can often be found at a patient’s bedside.

ospital Board Member James Theodore tells me his relationship with Canton-Potsdam Hospital officially began “at birth”. He and his three sisters were all delivered at CantonPotsdam Hospital, by “the legendary” Dr. Marshall Stevenson. James’ next experience at CPH came a few days before he was to start kindergarten. “We were playing Batman and Robin,” he recalls, “and I tripped, and hit the brick wall of our house, and fractured my skull. Dr. Mina fixed me up.” But this story, of a family’s relationship with our Hospital, really begins well before that.

Given the family ties, it was perhaps inevitable that James would get involved here, too. He attended college locally, and then went to Pace University in Westchester County. After several degrees, James returned home to Potsdam, and went to work at Smith Barney with his father. Soon after, he met Abbe Wells, also a local girl, who had attended Clarkson and was working at Alcoa. They married 7 years ago, and their daughter Grace and son Christos were both born at CPH. “The doctors and nurses at CPH took great care of Abbe and our newborns,” James says.

James’ father, Chris, emigrated from Greece in the 1950’s, to work at his uncle’s restaurant in Lake Placid. “He’s an awesome chef,” James laughs, “but he was really more interested in finance.” By 1967 Chris was here in Potsdam, managing the local Smith Barney branch. “Right from the beginning, Dad was very committed to helping the Hospital and community,” James recalls. Chris served on several Hospital committees, and was a leader during the Hospital’s campaign to build a new ER in the 1980’s. Chris joined the Foundation Board in 1992, and was elected to serve as Chair in 1994. He set an ambitious goal to raise more than $100, 000 that year, and to have 50 donors each contribute $1,000. The rest of the Board was skeptical, but once Chris puts his mind to something, it happens.

“A few years ago, Don Dangremond and Ed Mucenski approached me about joining the Hospital Board,” James says. “I was born here, my family always received great care here, and I have always been very proud of my parents’ contributions to the Hospital. Why would I say no?”

The Linda Richards Society

inda Richards, America’s first nurse, was born in West Potsdam in 1841. She was one of five students enrolled in the first nursetraining program at New England Hospital for Women and Children. They worked 16 hours a day, and slept in the wards along with their patients. Pay was $1 per week, with 3 hours time off every 14 days. Linda was the only student to complete the program, and in 1873 she received the first nursing diploma issued in the United States. Miss Richards went on to devote her life to serving others, as a nurse and nursing teacher. In her honor, our Foundation created the Linda Richards Society, which recognizes those who help others through their annual gifts to our Hospital.

equests from Henry Foster and Gilbert French created our Hospital in 1920, and today bequests continue to help us move forward.

Bequests are added to our Hospital’s long-term investments, where they help secure the future of our Hospital and the health of our community. Your bequest or planned gift is the “last, best way” to demonstrate your values. Please consider including the Hospital Foundation in your estate plans. We welcome you to contact our office for more information.

Ways to Give OUTRIGHT GIFTS: Cash, check, publicly-traded stock, credit card, or online gifts are gratefully accepted. These gifts immediately “go to work” for the Hospital. The Annual Fund (also called the Linda Richards Society) supports the purchase of new equipment and the expansion of programs and services. Unless they request to be anonymous, all members of the Linda Richards Society are included in this annual report and on a donor list, which changes annually, near the main entrance to the Hospital. Memorial Gifts are a unique way you can honor the memory of a special person. Those for whom we have received more than $100 in memorial donations are permanently listed in a display near the main entrance to the Hospital. Gifts of Gratitude are a special way to say “thank you” to a physician, nurse, or other health care provider, for taking care of you or a loved one. We’ll be sure to let the honoree know about your thoughtful donation! Many companies match charitable gifts made by employees, retirees, and directors. We encourage you to enquire whether your company will do the same. SPECIAL GIFTS: Individuals donating $2,000 or more in a single year for the first time may choose to have an engraved brick added to our donor walkway. Gifts of $25,000 or more may be recognized by naming a specific hospital room, department, or service, as appropriate. PLANNED GIFTS: Any gift that you decide to give now, but that we do not actually receive until some time in the future, is a “planned gift.” The simplest to make, and by far the most common, is a bequest in your will. If you already have a will in effect, a simple codicil may be added to include the Hospital Foundation. Other types of planned or deferred gifts may give you special income and/or tax advantages. They can play a valuable role in strengthening your own long-term financial health, while enabling you to leave a lasting legacy that would perhaps not otherwise be affordable. We would be happy to work with you and your attorney or financial advisor on a gift from your IRA, a charitable gift annuity, trust, or gift of life insurance. “The best thing about being a CPH volunteer is meeting all of the other volunteers, having a good time, and spending money in the Gift Shop. Volunteers get a shop discount, and I think many of us are also the Shop’s best customers!”

olunteer and Events Coordinator Lyndsay Macagg knows she’s not supposed to play favorites among her 125 volunteers. But she’s spotted regularly, having lunch with one of them, in the Hospital cafeteria. “That’s my Gram,” she laughs. “We often have lunch before her shift starts.”

It’s also pretty nice to hang out with her grand-daughter, of whom she’s visibly proud. Lyndsay worked her way through Clarkson, and was hired soon after graduation, as a database analyst here at the Hospital. Almost three years ago she stepped up to a new challenge and became our Volunteer and Community Events Coordinator. Just like her Gram, Lyndsay also commutes 40 miles each way, five days a week, from her home in Fine.

“Gram,” is Emily Nolan, who has volunteered at the CPH Guild’s Gift Shop for the last two years. To say she’s devoted is an understatement. The 75-year old lives in Oswegatchie, and drives 40 miles, each way, for her weekly volunteer shift. When I ask the obvious question: “why does she do it?” her response is straight forward. “Because I want to. It’s for a very good cause, and I enjoy doing it.”

It’s not always easy. “The weather can be awful,” she says. “And leaving our young son each morning tugs at my heart. But I love my job. I’m a people-person,” Lyndsay says. “I have gotten so close to many of the volunteers that they are more like friends to me.”

If the commute doesn’t faze her, it’s because Emily is accustomed to challenges. She was born in Ogdensburg during the Great Depression, the youngest of 17 children. Her parents were Irish immigrants, and her five oldest siblings were born in Ireland. As an adult, Emily worked 45 years in the finance department at Newton Falls Paper Mill, while raising her three children. (No way that she was having 17 kids of her own, she jokes.)

Or maybe, more like family.

Now, after a “lean” childhood and decades of hard work, Emily is enjoying her retirement. 12

Hockey Puck Run Benefits Hospital For the 5th consecutive year, the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at Clarkson University, and the sisters of Kappa Delta Sigma sorority at St. Lawrence University, teamed up to “run the puck” between Clarkson and SLU on the evening of the Clarkson/ SLU hockey games. This year’s fund-raiser generated$1,730 to benefit the Canton-Potsdam Hospital Foundation. Since starting the puck run, more than $10,000 has been contributed to benefit the Hospital. Price Chopper Donates to Hospital More than 50 local and regional businesses contributed to our Foundation last year; including Price Chopper, which donated $500 shortly after opening their new stores in Potsdam and Canton. Annual fund gifts like theirs helped our Hospital purchase equipment to enhance patient care; including a new nurse-call system for inpatient units, and multi-function monitors of the emergency department. Erin Triolo – In Her Own Words “I was born at Canton-Potsdam Hospital in 1978. My mother had an emergency C-section for a prolapsed umbilical cord, which was discovered by the labor and delivery nurse, Carol Gallagher. I grew up in Norwood, and left the area after college. I recently returned to the North Country to accept a job at CPH. I am now a labor and delivery nurse, helping to bring new babies into the world. My first week of work at CPH, I worked with a nurse who was about to retire. It was Carol Gallagher, my Mom’s labor nurse 31 years ago. It was an honor to have the opportunity to thank her for saving my life.”

Sarah Close – In Her Own Words “This Hospital has been a part of my life for 28 years, and I’m sure it will continue to be for a long time. My father (Dr. Jan S. Close) began working here in 1982. He used to bring me to the Hospital with him when he would do rounds. He would plunk me down with Bonnie Daniels, the ward clerk in the Critical Care Unit, and I would “help” her work (or so I thought.) Now, in 2011, Dad is still working in the Hospital ER, and I’m an RN in the CCU, working right next to Bonnie Daniels. Now I sit in my own chair, though, and not on Bonnie’s lap!”

“That’s an interesting story,” she tells me. “My friend Lynda Karpick accepted a job at CPH as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. In talking to physician recruiter Carlos Alberto, Lynda’s husband mentioned that I was his Family Nurse Practitioner, and that Nick was in family practice residency. That really set things in motion!” When Susan helped Lynda move here, Carlos invited Susan to do an interview. “I loved the staff, the opportunity, and the area,” Susan recalls. “One month later, Nick and I flew back up here so he could interview. The airlines lost his luggage, so we had to scramble for clothes. One of the other nurse anesthetists lent him some, and Carlos even lent a sports coat for the interview!”

r. Terry “Nick” Knowles took a round-about path to medical school….stopping in all 48 contiguous United States along the way.

“I held several different jobs in my 20’s and early 30’s,” he tells me, “but didn’t really have a career.” So he quit, and spent a year traveling the country and living, primarily, in his car. “It was a Chrysler LeBaron four-door,” he laughs. “It was plush. The front seat folded all the way down. Plenty of room for sleeping.” During that year, he read a lot, visited friends and family, sometimes relied on the kindness of strangers, and “tried to come up with a philosophy of life.” Somewhere along the road, an idea surfaced: to become a physician. “I didn’t tell anyone,” he tells me. “I just let it percolate.”

Susan moved here first, early in 2009, to become Director of the Clarkson University Student Health Service, which is run by the Hospital. For 18 months they lived 12 hours apart, until Dr. Knowles completed his residency and moved here midway through 2010.

By year’s end, he was certain. So he moved to Morgantown West Virginia to work and complete the few undergraduate courses he needed for medical school, then enrolled at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. “I originally thought I might become a Psychiatrist,” he says, “but I’m interested in everything, and was drawn to a more holistic approach. I was fascinated by the connections between lifestyle and health, so I chose Family Practice.”

“I was so fortunate to join an established practice, and I’ve been booked since my first week,” he says. “I love it here: getting to know my patients, spending time outdoors, and the small town atmosphere. Where else would a physician recruiter literally lend his own coat for an interview? How good is that?”

Along the way Dr. Knowles met his wife, Susan, who is a Nurse Practitioner. He was interested in learning more about alternative medicine, and she was coordinating a Reiki class, which he signed up for. It was Susan who eventually brought Dr. Knowles to the North Country.

It’s good. Definitely better than sleeping in the LeBaron.

ancy Bush doesn’t quite know where to start when I ask about her relationship with our Hospital. She’s a Hospital employee. So was her Mom, Beulah, who worked in our laundry for 18 years. Nancy’s also a frequent patient. And so were her children.

Three years later, Dean needed a liver transplant. He’d contracted hepatitis B when he was a young boy, because of his hemophilia. So Nancy donated 60% of her liver to Dean, and hospital employees donated enough to help pay Dean’s mortgage for eight months while he recovered. “The day I left for Rochester for the transplant, I was handed an envelope. When I opened it, money just fell out all over the floor. More than $3,000. That card was signed by staff I didn’t even know!”

“I had two sons, Dean and Georgie. Both had hemophilia, and they were ‘frequent fliers’ at the Hospital when they were growing up,” she tells me. The boys were looked after by Dr. Bokat, Dr. Kay, and Dr. Berk. And of course, by all the nurses. “Everyone knew the Bush Boys,” Nancy laughs. “They lived on the edge, and chose to ignore the fact that they were hemophiliacs. They were not the easiest patients. Georgie even ‘fired’ Dr. Kay several times!”

Since donating her liver, Nancy has had ongoing complications related to surgical scarring and adhesions, which put her in the Hospital as a patient “several times.” “The support I receive here is wonderful,” Nancy tells me. “Where else could you work, and be so completely cared for?”

Nancy was at the Hospital so frequently that a nurse jokingly suggested she should get a job here. It sounded like a good idea, so 27 years ago Nancy joined the CPH workforce. She’s been a ward clerk “everywhere”, and has been full time in the Operating Room for 16 years. “This is my other family,” she smiles. “And I’m just as loyal to CPH as I am to my “real” relatives.”

Recently, Nancy was here for a much more joyous occasion: to meet her brand new great-grandbaby. That’s five generations of her family, all intertwined with CantonPotsdam Hospital. Nancy smiles broadly. “Our Hospital Family Tree just keeps on growing.”

The “Hospital Family” has also been loyal to Nancy. Her son Georgie received “wonderful 26
