The Hospital Foundation was

established in 1985 to serve the Hospital by encouraging gift support from individuals and organizations. Today, the Foundation conducts annual and capital campaigns, accepts memorial and planned gifts, coordinates grant applications on behalf of the Hospital to government and private funders, and offers named gift recognition for major donors. The Foundation also oversees invested funds to ensure the long-term future of the Hospital.

Besides being a list of our previous year’s donors, our goal for the Foundation Annual Report is to put a human face on the Hospital, and to shine a light on who we are, and what we do, from multiple perspectives. For example, last year, our annual report focused on our new Center for Cancer Care; featuring stories about our oncologists, an employee at the Center, a Board member, a volunteer, and a former patient. In previous years, we’ve highlighted multiple generations involved with our Hospital, “behind the scenes” employees most patients never get to meet, and lots of other interesting stories. This year, we are focusing on one word: community. Our Hospital is honored to have been part of the community for more than 85 years, and our donor list certainly reflects the broad community support we are so grateful to receive. Beyond that, we thought you might be interested to learn more about some of the many connections between our “Hospital Family” members and the larger community. We hope you enjoy reading this as much as we enjoyed compiling it! 1

marked my fifth year as President and CEO of Canton-Potsdam Hospital and Canton-Potsdam Hospital Foundation. I came here knowing this was a good organization, with many excellent physicians, a devoted staff, and committed volunteers helping in all quarters. What I did not know when I came was the depth and breadth of community investment and support for our Hospital. In short, I continue to be amazed by it. In the past five years, our community has contributed more than $3.14 million dollars, with nearly $1 million more pledged to be paid towards the “Constructing Healthier Communities” campaign. We concluded that campaign on September 1, with a combined total of more than $3 million in local contributions and New York State grants – by far the largest and most successful fund-raising initiative in our Hospital’s history. This took place during a time of great economic upheaval, tumultuous elections, and uncertainty around the impact of the Affordable Care Act. Donors had many reasons to say “no” to making gifts and long-term commitments. But they did not say “no.” They said “yes,” just as they have, year in and out, since our Hospital was founded. We are proud to be a part of this incredibly generous community, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to serve all who seek our help. you think you see Andrew Williams around town a lot, you may actually be seeing his identical twin brother, Eric, who works at SLU. Dr. Williams attended medical school at University of Rochester, and completed his residency at Harvard. As a National Health Service Corps Scholar, he served 4 years as Chief of Staff at Northern Navajo Hospital in New Mexico. His wife taught in the elementary school there, and that’s where their two sons were born. When his service commitment was over, Dr. Williams and his young family returned to the Rochester area. He taught at the University of Rochester Medical School while his wife completed her PhD. While there, Dr. Williams was honored to receive the Arthur Bauman Award for Outstanding Teacher and Kohn Senior Teaching Fellow, but he wanted to raise his family near his twin brother’s family. So they moved here, and he is now the Medical Director of the Community Health Center of the North Country, a federally-funded “safety net” clinic for those with difficulty accessing care. The clinic has grown tremendously in recent years, with offices in Canton, Malone, and Watertown. Dr. Williams and four physician assistants provide primary care, and there are four dentists, two part time psychologists and four mental health counselors, two physical therapy staff, an optometrist, and an optician. The goal of the clinic, and Dr. Williams’ own personal mission, is to provide a very high level of care to those who don’t typically receive it. As Medical Director, he carries a full case load of primary care patients, and provides all inpatient care if one of the clinic’s patients is admitted to the Hospital. And if his patients can’t come to the clinic, he sometimes goes to them; including bringing a portable ultrasound machine on house calls, and doing home visits to Amish patients. In addition to his more-than-full-time practice, Dr. Williams is still an Assistant Professor; hosting medical students who come here to train on four-week rotations. He’s also on the Board of Advisors for Clarkson University’s new Physician Assistant program, chairs several Hospital committees, a member of Temple Beth-el in Potsdam, and involved in his kids’ activities. So if you aren’t sure whether it’s Dr. Williams, or his brother, that you see around town, here’s a hint: he’ll be the one carrying the portable ultrasound machine.

Jason Lorenc has no problem keeping up with the long hours and sometimes frantic pace of our Emergency Department. He’s a marathon runner. After medical school and residency training, Dr. Lorenc came straight here to work in our Emergency Department. “My wife Susan is a Canton native,” he tells me. “When it was time for me to find a job, we drew a circle with a 3-hour radius around Canton. Of course, half of that circle was in Canada! But Potsdam was right there near the center. So here I am.” That was nearly 10 years ago. Now, Dr. Lorenc is just as much at home in Canton as his wife is. He coaches his children’s basketball teams and is President of the Canton Hoopsters. He’s also Medical Director of the Potsdam and West Potsdam Rescue Squads, and lectures for Canton’s Emergency Medical Service. Earlier this year Dr. Lorenc’s 3-year old nephew was diagnosed with leukemia. That’s when he got involved with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Team in Training” initiative. Team in Training (TNT) began in 1988 when a New York man formed a team that raised funds and trained to run the New York City Marathon in honor of his daughter, a leukemia survivor. Since then TNT has grown into the world’s largest endurance sports training program, with more than 40,000 participants each year and more than $1.2 billion raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Dr. Lorenc has always been athletic. He played sports in high school, and Division One soccer at Cornell. So he signed on to TNT, and raised $8,000 this year. He ran 40 to 50 miles a week to train for the New York City Marathon, which was, unfortunately, cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. “It was really disappointing,” he says. “We were already down there when they finally decided to cancel. Maybe next year.” In the meantime, he’ll keep running. It’s that same fast pace which makes Emergency Medicine so attractive to him. “Every day is different. Of course, when people think about the Emergency Department they think of major traumas, and that’s a part of it. But I try to remember that for every patient, an ER visit is a big deal; even for those who come to the ER for things that are less traumatic. From the patient’s perspective, it’s still an emergency. Nothing is routine.” We’re proud to have Dr. Lorenc on our team.

everend Ed Sachs came to Potsdam to attend Clarkson University’s chemical engineering program, switched to marketing and management, worked for Hickory Farms, earned an MS in counseling from Liberty University, and, somehow, ended up pastor of the North Country Community Church here in Potsdam, a post he has held for the past 19 years. Along the way he met and married his college sweetheart, Sarah, who is now the youth services librarian at Potsdam Public Library, and raised a son, Nate, now 26 and a father himself. Ed was an Eagle Scout and his counseling practice sponsors local Boy Scout Troop 77. He is Treasurer of the Board of Helping Hands of Potsdam, Treasurer of the Potsdam Ministerial Association, coordinator of the Christian Prayer Initiative, and fills in as Campus Minister at SUNY Potsdam when Dr. Harvey Smith is out of town. In 1998 Ed began another long-term relationship - with Canton-Potsdam Hospital. “I attended a conference for hospital staff and community members called “Building a Healing Team,” he recounts, “and that’s when it really hit me – the hospital is the hub of our area – the one place where everyone in our community, all ages and backgrounds, is served.” After that conference, Ed and a few other clergy representatives worked with hospital staff to establish a Spiritual Care Committee. They created a non-denominational meditation room in the hospital and launched an annual memorial service for families of patients who pass away there. The committee now does education programs for staff and helps to meet the spiritual needs of staff, patients, and family members. Ed puts in two or three hours per week as a Chaplain , serves on the Ethics Committee of the hospital, and also helps coordinate Chaplain’s Associates and Spiritual Care Visitors – lay people who visit patients when clergy are unavailable or a patient has no specific religious affiliation. “The hospital has grown so much in the years I’ve been here,” he tells me. “Staff are stretched thin and the pace is very hectic. The Spiritual Care Team can do things that staff just can’t do anymore – whether sitting with a patient, debriefing after a critical incident, or offering a brief prayer to help family members dealing with a trauma.” For that, we offer our own brief prayer – of thanks - for Reverend Ed Sachs and all the clergy members who help here.

already knew that Hospital employees are active in the community. They volunteer on fire departments and rescue squads, coach youth hockey, serve on school boards, lead scout troops, and volunteer for Hospice, the animal shelter, and countless other organizations. Hospital employees are leaders in local Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis, Lions, VFW, and Chambers of Commerce. They serve as Trustees of cemetery associations and historical societies, are parish council members at their churches, and raise funds for playgrounds and PTA’s. This year we discovered that two of Santa’s helpers work right here at CantonPotsdam Hospital. For more than ten years, Debbie McCuin and Laurie Vavra have been two of the four members of the Tri-Town Christmas Basket Committee, which oversees a community-wide Christmas drive for children in the St. Lawrence Central School District. Debbie has worked full time at the CPH lab for 25 years, and Laurie has been a full time RN on our medical/ surgical floors since 1982 (with a 5- year break several years ago.) The two have been friends “forever,” and have been involved with the Christmas program for more than 15 years. Both Laurie and Debbie just light up when I ask them about the program. It’s clearly a labor of love - an all-volunteer effort that helps about 250 kids each year, providing three gifts per child, a food basket, and a grocery gift card to every family. The local churches do food drives and special collections, there are “angel” trees out at businesses and the school, and everyone pitches in. The Lions Club and the Tri-Town Chamber help, along with several of the school’s sports teams, and a group of retired teachers. “We stress about it,” Debbie says. “Our community is small, and there aren’t many businesses that can help out. But every year, out of nowhere, people step up to the plate, and it all comes together. Last year one gentleman donated ten $100 bills!” Who knew that elves wear lab coats and scrubs? 19

The Linda Richards Society

Linda Richards, America’s first nurse, was born in West

Potsdam in 1841. She was one of five students enrolled in the first nurse-training program at New England Hospital for Women and Children. They worked 16 hours a day, and slept in the wards along with their patients. Pay was $1 per week, with 3 hours time off every 14 days. Linda was the only student to complete the program, and in 1873 she received the first nursing diploma issued in the United States. Miss Richards went on to devote her life to serving others, as a nurse and nursing teacher. In her honor, our Foundation created the Linda Richards Society, which recognizes those who help others through their annual gifts to our Hospital.

The Foster and French Society

Bequests from Henry Foster and Gilbert French created our Hospital in

1920, and today bequests continue to help us move forward.

Bequests are added to our Hospital’s long-term investments, where they help secure the future of our Hospital and the health of our community. Your bequest or planned gift is the “last, best way” to demonstrate your values. Please consider including the Hospital Foundation in your estate plans. Ways to Give Outright Gifts:

Cash, check, publicly-traded stock, credit card, or online gifts are gratefully accepted. These gifts immediately “go to work” for the Hospital.

The Annual Fund

(also called the Linda Richards Society) supports the purchase of new equipment and the expansion of programs and services. Unless they request to be anonymous, all members of the Linda Richards Society are included in this annual report and on a donor list, which changes annually, near the main entrance to the Hospital.

Memorial Gifts

are a unique way you can honor the memory of a special person. Those for whom we have received more than $100 in memorial donations are permanently listed in a display near the main entrance to the Hospital.

Gifts of Gratitude are a special way to say “thank you” to a physician, nurse, or other health care provider, for taking care of you or a loved one. We’ll be sure to let the honoree know about your thoughtful donation!

Special Gifts:

Individuals donating $2,000 or more in a single year for the ﬁrst time may choose to have an engraved brick added to our donor walkway. Gifts of $25,000 or more may be recognized by naming a speciﬁc hospital room, department, or service, as appropriate.

Planned Gifts:

Any gift that you decide to give now, but that we do not actually receive until some time in the future, is a “planned gift.” The simplest to make, and by far the most common, is a bequest in your will. If you already have a will in effect, a simple codicil may be added to include the Hospital Foundation.

Other types of planned or deferred gifts may give you special income and/or tax advantages.

They can play a valuable role in strengthening your own long-term ﬁnancial health, while enabling you to leave a lasting legacy that would perhaps not otherwise be affordable. Joan Newman

The

first thing you notice about Joan Newman is that she is tiny. A lifelong Canton resident, she and her late husband Jack raised 7 daughters. She was an RN at SUNY Canton’s Student Health Service for 24 years, and volunteered as a Level-3 EMT on the Canton Rescue Squad for 20 years. She now has 14 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. The second thing you notice is that Joan does not like talking about herself or being photographed. But she has a story that begs to be told. In 1978, Joan’s husband, Jack, had a massive heart attack when he was just 48 years old. He was a patient in our Intensive Care Unit “a very long time.” He recovered, and had bypass surgery, but then suffered another heart attack in 1991. Jack was evaluated at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston, and received a heart transplant in1992. Jack was a carpenter, but was unable to continue working in construction. A friend of Jack’s gave him a set of used golf clubs, to help him pass the time. Then in 1991, another friend suggested that Jack help organize a “little” golf tournament to benefit the American Heart Association. And so, they did. The first year, the tournament had 28 players, and raised $250. But every year after that, it got bigger. So much bigger that, in the past 21 years, it has raised more than $250,000 for the American Heart Association. Jack’s health took a turn for the worse in 2008, and he passed away on the day of the 17th annual golf tournament. For days leading up to his death, Jack and Joan’s large family “camped out” in the family lounge and meditation rooms on our Hospital’s second floor. When Jack died, Joan requested that memorial donations be made to our Hospital Foundation, to improve the family lounge, and ensure that all families have a quiet place to be together when a loved one is critically ill. Since then, 54 donors have contributed more than $8,000 to the Jack Newman fund here at the Hospital. For the past three years, Joan has also chosen to direct a portion of the proceeds from the Jack Newman Memorial Golf Tournament to come to our fund. So far, that’s added $6,000. We’ve used those gifts to refurbish the family lounge, and for other projects to help families be more comfortable when they are here. Yes, Joan Newman is tiny. But her heart, and her accomplishments, are huge.

There’s

an old saying that goes “If you want something done, ask a busy person.” That just about sums up the Foundation Board of Directors! The Foundation Board is our primary link between the Foundation and our community. We’re extremely fortunate to have a great group of dedicated Board members volunteering their time and expertise on our behalf. Foundation Board members don’t just attend meetings. They sign letters, make thank-you calls, help with solicitations, make their own generous gifts, and act as our eyes and ears in the community. Some of our Board members are retired, and some work full time. They come from across our Hospital’s service area; and from occupations as diverse as school superintendent, attorney, accountant, dentist, professor, and entrepreneur. They range in age from 35 to 75. What they all have in common is that, though they’re very busy people, they have chosen to make supporting our Hospital a priority. Here’s just a sampling of some of the other community involvement of our Board members: St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Library Board, Church Treasurer, Knight Club, Kinney Foundation Board, Adirondack Mountain Club, Renewal House, Church Council President, Addiction Treatment and Recovery Board, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, North Country Children’s Clinic, County Legislator, SUNY Potsdam Foundation, Lions Club…….well, you get the idea. We’re always on the lookout for potential Board members.
