Just like Glen Hansard in the movie, Brett Perkins, the organiser of the Copenhagen Songwriters Festival, started off as a musician, playing in numerous bands around the US. When he came to Denmark almost 30 years ago, his focus shifted from merely making music to helping young musicians on their way to fame and promoting songwriters. In the early ‘90s he launched the ‘Listening Room’ events to bring some life into the more or less non-existant Dan-

Do you think Dolly Parton knows who David Brent is? She can’t be as dippy as her onstage persona, surely. Someone must have pointed out that her anatomy is the subject of one of the all-time classic British sitcom lines, which is particularly memorable as it’s the final line of the first series. Every time her name comes up in the UK, someone repeats it, like we’ve done in our new music section. Sorry to be predictable. It may be a new look but you can expect more of the tired old clichés. So here it is: the relaunch. It’s bigger, it’s prettier and time will tell if it’s better for you: the reader. Putting this issue together has been a bit like the aftermath of moving home. Sure, the change is exciting, but then you have to put up all those pesky fixtures and fittings again, this time dealing with a different type of wall. It can get a bit dull, but it’s worth it if you realise you never liked them in the first place and that

there’s nothing stopping you from binning them. Bar what’s under Dolly’s bra, this week’s issue is a little bit short on major attractions, but it’s quite positively a 38DD when it comes to things to do for a minimal cost. First off, the Copenhagen Songwriters Festival (see G2), now in its third year, is only 100 kroner a day (free for under-12s) to listen to 12 hours of continuous music. While Saturday’s all-day preview of the forthcoming Royal Theatre season at Rosenborg Eksercerplads (see G3) is completely free. It’s a great opportunity to introduce your kids to a bit of culture and avoid the embarrassment of having to get up during Madame Butterfly’s aria because little Jens needs to tisse. You can leave when you want, eat your crisps as loudly as you like and not feel you have to dress up. The only snag is that it might rain. Likewise, all the concerts and most events at the Malmø Festival (see G9) are free, and there’s some real quality, including last week’s featured music act, CocoRosie. There’s never been a better excuse to cross the Sound, and you could even swim it if you want to keep your costs down.

ish songwriter scene –with great effect. “The scene has expanded exponentially over the past two decades, so that now, there’s a songwriter’s night in Copenhagen nearly every day,” Perkins tells In & Out. “Over 20 regional songwriter organisations are putting on showcases and workshops for their members – several of which are presenting their members at the festival again this year.” Perkins is well aware of the fact that his kind of music is still an eclectic genre. However, having problems to find acts to perform at the first festival in 2009 was certainly a one-off mainly because of Perkins’ networking skills and neverending initiative, but also due to the acknowledgment the festival is getting. “The number of acts seeking to be booked increased dramatically this year. I also expanded the hours on our three stages in response to that demand, resulting in an increase of over 60 more performers.” He even had to include a ‘no consecutive years repeat’ policy to give more artists the chance to get onstage experience and to take part in workshops, such as ‘Introduction to Guitar Picking’ or ‘Independent Artist Management’. The range of the performing acts this year is quite impressive. From jazz, swing and country to pop, and electro – no evening is

But a great performance should also take the artist, as well as the audience, on a journey. “It should entertain, educate and elevate us,” says Alexandre Bourdat, the lead dancer in Sommerballet 2011. “This performance reinforced my beliefs on the positive impact live performances have on people’s life.” This year’s Sommerballet at Bellevue Theatre takes the audience on an amazing journey where they learn about desire, temptation, love, regret, and redemption. It consists of two acts. The first act concentrates on the universe of women. It explores all the corners of womanhood, from anger to love, and uses dance, expressive music and video installations to enchant the audience. The second act brings to life the reality of the world today with its possibilities, temptations, and restless searching. It displays the duality of our society, showing us that every choice has a consequence, whether it’s a conscious or unconscious one, and that there are two types of choice: the safe and known, and the unknown and exciting. When the lights went out, I held my breath, only to release it as the beautiful, and feisty Selene Muñoz started to sway her body to the sound of the double bass. Her shadow danced on the wall as she moved across the stage in her flamingo-inspired gown. I remember feeling that her dance reminded me of the

was great, and the flamingo was stunning, it is the second act that I will remember best in the years to come, and undoubtedly when I felt most at home. It was made up of one dance sequence in which the story of a young man is told and he becomes an analogy for us all. I could relate to the restlessness being portrayed. I recognised the countless opportunities being presented to

us, without guidance, every day disturbing our fake sense of security within both our professional and private lives. The second act is bizarre, scary and brilliant. The way horror is mixed with comedy, combined with a simple storyline, gives the viewer time to appreciate the art of the dance being performed. This year’s Sommerbal-

MR. SHOWBIZZ OF DENMARK

Ernst Trillingsgaard director for the Aalborg Kongress and Kultur Centre (Congress and Cultural Centre) is excited about trees. Not just any trees, Trillingsgaard explains, but the special trees that visiting musicians have planted in the Aalborg’s Kildeparken when they come to perform in the North Jutland town. By Bonnie Fortune

T

he tree planting tradition was started in 1987 by Trillingsgaard, with the first tree planted by British singer, Sir Cliff Richard. Richard’s countryman, Sting, planted the most recent tree. Sting who visited Aalborg as part of his 26-city Symphonicity tour played with the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra and planted the 75th tree in the park. Trillingsgaard says that after 75 trees planted, Kildeparken, which is located next to the Aalborg Congress and Cultural Centre, is getting a little crowded and they will have to find a new location to fit in the popular planting ceremony. Internationally recognized celebrities from John Cleese to B.B. King to Elton John have all dug into the north Jutland soil as part of the town’s tradition. Trillingsgaard says that this September there will be a new feature to the celebrity trees. Visitors will be able to walk past the trees and press a button to hear a few bars of, for example, Elton John’s music or Sting’s greatest hits. Now, not only will the trees brighten the ecology of Aalborg, but also add to the town’s musical fun.

Ernst trillingsgaard

Trillingsgaard has been director for over twenty years. Besides starting the tree planting tradition, he has brought attention to Aalborg by bringing in international acts from theatre performances to musicians as well as important business conferences. Theatre and ballet performances from over seventy countries have graced the stages in Aalborg. International musical

acts like Prince, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan and even, Take That! have all been seen in the coastal Danish town. Trillingsgaard says that he works closely with the venues in Aalborg, like Gigantium and, of course, the Cultural centre, as well as the management teams for the visiting artists to make sure that they receive special treatment. If a band requests a special limousine to travel to the airport or a special wine in their dressing room, Trillingsaard handles that. It is this attention to detail, he says, that continually attracts bigger names to the Scandinavian town.

Trillingsgaard is not from Aalborg. Before coming to the city, he was director of Holstebro Hall in Holstebro, Denmark. He just takes pride in bringing cultural recognition to a city that might otherwise be ignored because of its location. Sometimes cultural acts will only play in Aalborg, skipping the Danish capital of Copenhagen, in favour of the special Aalborg treatment. Thousands of concertgoers come from all over Denmark to attend the various events held in the city. Most recently, almost 3000 people attended an American style BBQ party, catered by 15 grill masters, before heading over to hear the Eagles concert at the Cultural Centre. Don’t forget the ‘Congress’ part of the Aalborg Congress and Cultural Centre. Boasting several large meeting halls and over forty different meeting rooms, all equipped with the latest in technology, Aalborg attracts the business community along with fans of culture. Trillingsgaard says that for over twenty years the centre has played host to DanFish conference, the biggest conference for the fishing industry in the world. This fall Denmark’s Prince Joachim will speak at the conference, which brings in business interests from far-flung locations like Thailand and New Zealand. Overall Trillingsgaard says that through the Aalborg Congress and Cultural Centre’s rich program of cultural and business events, Aalborg is able to move from a town to an international city.

Dolly’s so much more than just a big pair of tits Dolly Parton

Forum; Thursday, August 25, 20:00 Tickets: 415 - 815 kr www.forumcopenhagen.com www.dollypartonmusic.net

L

ONG BEFORE the material girl took us on holiday, there was the original blonde diva. Vivacious, charming and with a world famous anatomy, Dolly Parton is the undisputed queen of country music. While age and popular taste have taken their toll on Dolly, she refuses to lie down quietly, visiting Copenhagen as part of yet another word tour. Born to a large rural family in Tennessee, Dolly Parton’s upbringing as one of 12 children coloured her early songwriting. Poverty and Pentecostal Christianity were prominent themes, earning her respect within her community. By the age of nine, Dolly had appeared on local television shows and by 13 she had already been signed to a small record label. A chance meeting with the legendary Johnny Cash had an impact on the young Dolly and after graduating from high school in 1964, she moved to Nashville to pursue her musical career. After an unsuccessful attempt at singing bublegum pop, Dolly released her first album, Hello, I’m Dolly, in 1967, an album that secured her place on the country music stage. After a string of duets with prominent musicians, including Porter Wagoner, Dolly’s solo career plateaued, and it wasn’t until 1973 following the release of the single ‘Jolene’ that Dolly began to reach her mark. In 1974, Parton relased ‘I Will Always Love You’, a song that peaked at number one on the billboard charts. While Parton’s voice and stage presence are well known, it is her songwriting ability that has earned her respect among her peers. Unlike many of the solo artists of today, Dolly actually writes most of her songs and the emotion she pours into them connects her audience to her experiences. By 1980, Dolly had achieved eight number one singles and she began a campaign to move away from country music and into the mainstream. After some early bumps, her singles began to rate well in both the pop and country charts, earning her a host of awards including a Grammy for her album Here You Come Again. As her profile grew, Dolly began to develop her film career, featuring in a number of Holywood hits including Nine to Five in which she starred alongside Jane Fonda. She hosted her own variety show ‘Dolly’ and even opened a theme park in her home state of Nashville, aptly called ‘Dollywood’. While there’s no denying Dolly’s credentials, just how does a 65-year-old sex symbol retain her relevance? While some will cite (and question) her artificially-enhanced appearance, others point to the character of Dolly herself. Always cheeky, fearsomely independent and forever optimistic, Dolly Parton has forever sung about overcoming challenges. Hers is a music rooted in cheerfulness and a sense of the hopeful. If Dolly chooses to do her thing at her age, well then, she will go right ahead and do that. You hear? With tickets starting at 415 kroner, it’s obvious that demand for Dolly remains strong. With her entourage including some of the best country musicians around today, this is a chance to see an icon in action. ANDY RUGG

Stella Polaris ★★★★★★

August 9 Østre Anlæg DENMARK’S marquee chillout festival, Stella Polaris, proved to be an expectation-defying affair on Sunday, August 9, as thousands of Copenhageners young and old defied the grey summer weather and flocked to the grounds outside the national art gallery for the 14th instalment of the annual event. This year’s occasion featured an intriguing blend of veteran Stella Polaris artists such as Lulu Rouge and Nicka, newcomers such as Kura and established headliners like Moby and Le Gammeltoft, in contrast to last year’s line-up which was a tad more-star-studded. As always, Stella Polaris was much more than merely a musical event. Many turned up with nothing more than a picnic basket and a blanket with little notion of what sort of music to expect and left the event beaming and in good spirits. Chill-out don Kalle B got the ball rolling at noon, showcasing the very best of his laidback take on electronic music fused with the odd pop influence every now and again. With the crowd warmed up and the oncethreatening grey skies clearing steadily, Kura - one of the hottest prospects in European electronic

music - took to the stage and delivered a set that showed exactly why the Danish-Icelandic duo are as highly rated as they are right now. Their compelling fusion of dreamy ambient soundscapes and potent vocals paired alongside hefty bass thuds set the tone perfectly for Denmark’s first ladies of DJing, Le Gammeltoft and thereafter Rosa Lux, both of whom delivered energetic and clinical performances. At Moby’s late-afternoon ap-

pearance, the grounds at Østre Anlæg were as crammed as they got all day. Moby’s spellbinding performance was arguably the best of them all: a dreamy rendition that featured covers of timeless classics such as Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring of Fire’, Lou Reed’s ‘Wild Side’, and the more recent gem, Agnes Obel’s ‘Riverside’. The critically acclaimed New Yorker, in veritable Stella Polaris spirit, stuck to the confines of ambient, laid-back grooves in his two-

MUSEUM CORNER

CONTENT PROVIDED BY KULTURKLIK.DK

DO YOU LIKE museums, but feel there aren’t enough roaring engines, homicides and daring tales of resistance? Well you’re not alone, and Kulturklik.dk’s ‘Museums with Balls’ recommendations have just the remedy. Catch a glimpse of the first motorcycle in Denmark and a mammothsized diesel engine, or take in the smell of the gunpowder smoke from the time of the resistance. It’s all perfect viewing if your balls are big enough. Gas guzzlers and vacuum cleaners First we are going to see the Nimbus motorcycle at Kunstindustrimuseet (Bredgade 68, 1260 Cph K). The first and only serial-produced motorcycle in Denmark had its debut in 1919. The first incarnation of the motorcycle was dubbed “the Stove Pipe” because of its characteristic fuselage. Higher taxations and a financial crisis following the First World War put a hold on the production in 1928 but a new version of the Nimbus saw the light of the day in 1932: the Model C. It was eventually dubbed ‘the bumblebee’ because of the humming noise it made. The Nimbus was fabricated at the Fisker factory, which also manufactured the famous Nilfisk vacuum cleaner. You can also catch it at Kunstindustrimuseet. The Sothern Harbour is shakin’ DieselHouse at HC Ørstedsværket (Tømmergravsgade 4, 2450 Cph SV) holds a diesel engine which in comparison would make the one that drives

your four-wheel-drive look like a coffee grinder. It weighs as much as 400 African elephants, 1,400 metric tonnes, and is as tall as a three-storey building. It measures a total of 12.5 metres and if you are within range, when the eight cylinders of the engine get going, you will feel it as though the Southern Harbour is about to split in half. The main attraction at DieselHouse was inaugurated in 1933 and was the world’s largest engine for 30 years. The mammoth-sized engine is still in operation and on the first and third Sunday of the month at 11am the engine gets started up. If you would like to inhale the reek of an even older diesel engine, you can go and visit the adjacent museum at 2pm on Thursdays, when the very first diesel engine invented by B&W gets started up. It was made in 1908. Bullet holes and resistance fights If you’re either a father or son interested in cotton coats, gunpowder smoke and wars, a visit to Frihedsmuseet (Churchillparken 6, 1263 Cph K) might be a clear-cut choice for you. Frihedsmuseet dives into the stories of the Danish resistance during the German occupation of Denmark from 1940 to 1945. As well as looking at the from guns, cars, uniforms and other equipment from back then, you can via video learn more about the resistance recounted by the very people who took part in it. BY NICHOLE ACCETTOLA

Let me explain. The saying goes, look no further than in your own backyard. And after having been on Copenhagen Cooking’s website – www.copenhagencooking. dk [see this week’s special supplement] - a trip to my backyard was definitely in order. Using the image of a beautiful, naked Nordic woman (or elf princess, as they call her) lying in a bed of leafy plants as the food festival’s cover picture was a clever tactic. Surely, she does her job at catching people’s attention on the website. But lovely looking as she was, I couldn’t help but look away from her, and instead study the pale green and dark green striped leaves that cover, for instance, the model’s

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Copenhagen N; 3535 7535; fourcourse menu 450kr, sevencourse 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you will find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it is well deserved. PDR Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, 1052 Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; www.1th.dk; 1,250kr per person 1th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard to-find-door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; www.reinwalds. dk; five-course menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75215kr Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s-script length of choices confronts you at. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC

left breast. Those leaves looked pretty darn familiar. As the festival’s programme states, the idea for the picture was originated by Bocuse d’Or winner Chef Rasmus Kofoed, and the plant that I recognised is the so-called yellow archangel, ogguldnælder in Danish. Immediately, I put on my flip-flops and went out back. As it turns out, I have two humungous beds of that same plant growing in my back yard. I didn’t even know what it was called, let alone that, according to Kofoed, it was an edible plant. A quick search online revealed that there are several Copenhagen restaurants that know about archangel - Noma being one of them. Actually, the Noma $ $ $

Cap Horn Nyhavn 21, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-00:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-00:00; 3312 8504; starters from 99kr, main courses from 139kr, desserts from 39kr; see www.caphorn.dk for special events Nyhavn, the old harbour, is an idyllic area of magic and hygge what the Danes like to say when referring to anything that is cosy, charming, or delightful: all qualities Cap Horn has in abundance. Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were too highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a ‘best ever veal experience) and the chocolate cake (‘Oh My God’), whih was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! MM BioMio Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Cph V; open daily 12:00-24:00 (later Fri and Sat), kitchen open 12:00-22:00; 3331 2000; starters 75kr, mains 135kr; www. biomio.dk Located in an old warehouse next to trendy Kødbyen, Bio Mio is certainly unusual for conservative Copenhagen. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that they don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that they can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. JH SushiTreat Fox Jarmers Plads 3, Cph V; open Mon-Thu 16:30-22:00, Fri-Sat 16:30-24:00 with Club Treat from 22:00-02:00; 3338 7030 The newly-opened restaurant SushiTreat at the Hotel Fox serves the best California-style sushi in the city, offers an impressive drinks and wine card, and a completely unique atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights when you can order sushi until 2am while listening to some of the city’s best DJs . cookbook even has a recipe for hay-baked celery root, blood sausage and archangel. According to Kofoed, archangel is commonly found in Denmark, and he hopes that the picture will inspire people to go out into nature and take advantage of the free plants and herbs around us. Mission accomplished, Chef Kofoed. To be able to make food with it, I needed to know how it tasted. With a leaf on my palate, I sensed a taste and tang similar to basil. A summery dish that emphasises the plant’s vibrant green colour, as well as its pungent flavour, was what I was going after. Raiding the garden for other ingredients went fast. I was able to pick the rest of the season’s peas, and harvest enough fava beans and green beans to fill my basket. Once in the kitchen, I

boiled each of the green ingredients – plus a small bundle of asparagus – briefly in salted water, and then submerged them in cold water to prevent further cooking. Next, I diced a block of soft feta cheese, and halved a few small red cherry tomatoes. In a big bowl, all the vegetables, the cheese, and a handful of archangel leaves got tossed together with a bit of extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper. The mélange was then arranged on a large platter and sprinkled with freshly-squeezed lemon juice (do this just before serving, otherwise the acid may discolour the green vegetables). Having a whole new respect for the plants in my garden, I felt the urge to embrace the moment the only way that seemed fitting: just like an elf princess would do. Thus, the photograph above. Good thing my neighbour is still on holiday.

On our visit our favourites were the Dum Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. AK Gold Prag Gothersgade 39, 1123 Cph K; open Tue-Wed 17:00-23:30; Thu-Sat 17:00-24:00; SunMon closed; appetisers from 19Kr, mains from 89kr; 3391 4712, www.goldprag.dk Gold Prag has a distinct Austrian, Hungarian, Czech and Polish heritage and lives in a time of its own. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, a private function the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. Worthy son of land of the rising sun Are you tired of the endless choice of sushi restaurants and takeaways in every nook and corner of Copenhagen, where in spite of trying to order something from the menu that sounds the most Japanese, it ends up tasting just like the sushi from the place you tried the week before? Well maybe it’s time to venture out to Amager Boulevard’s Radisson Blue Scandinavian Hotel, where tucked in a cosy corner of the hotel’s ground floor is Restaurant Kyoto. The restaurant, as with anything Japanese, has an interesting background. While this family-run business was founded by Takio Ueda in 1980, Ueda’s association with Japanese food began way before that. He hails from the city of Kyoto (hence the name), which is located in central Honshu, Japan’s biggest island. The city has deep roots in the history of the country, being the former imperial capital of Japan, but today it is mostly known for its rich food culture and tantalising delicacies. Food has been the family trade of the Uedas for decades - Takio’s parents ran an inn serving specialist food in Kyoto so it was only natural he took to the food business upon arriving in Denmark. His initial venture was a restaurant named Sukiyaki, located on Colbjoernsensgade, which later on moved to Scala on Axeltorv and is still located there. According to Ueda’s son Yosuke, the manager of Kyoto, “Sukiyaki was the first Japanese restaurant in Copenhagen to serve sushi.” Kyoto was started in to further expand Japanese food and culture in Copenhagen, since food is the easiest way to achieve this goal. Today, Kyoto has established its mark on the culinary scene in Copenhagen and remains committed to its original theme of serving authentic Japanese cuisine. Although this might be the promise of any ethnic restaurant, Kyoto has gone a bit further by introducing the Teppanyaki, a house speciality that can’t be found in any other restaurant in Denmark. The delicacy usually consists of steak and shrimp and is cooked on an iron griddle in front of the guests in an amazing display of culinary skills, as I witnessed on my evening at Kyoto. It was both a gastronomically satisfying and educational experience. Besides learning about the Teppanyaki, I was also informed about the correct way of eating sushi, which is to only slightly dip the fish part - and not the rice - into the soya sauce, rather than soaking it in

Step aboard for a voyage to the true Japan

the sauce. “Historically the concept of sushi was fermenting the food, which is why it is important to taste the marinated rice separately and devoid of soya sauce,” explains Yosuke, who added that authentic sushi should have as little stuffing as possible. This is perhaps where most sushi takeaways go wrong. My pleasant evening at the restaurant began with a starter course of sashimi followed by a dish of grilled lobster with vegetables and a side serving of rice and miso soup. This was followed by a meatier course of steak with ponzu

and sesame sauce. To finish off we were served ice cream and green tea. The dishes were cooked and presented to pleasing standards and served in gratifying portions. While there I also got to try the traditional plum wine while my dining partner had the popular brew, Kirin. Kyoto has an extensive menu consisting of, besides the Teppanyaki and sushi, hot pots, grills, noodle soups and the Bento dinner boxes. Accompanied by the simple and non-pretentious Japanese-style décor, this creates an atmos-

phere of calm and serenity. In the sushi boom that has hit Denmark over the past five years or so, the number of restaurants has increased four-fold, making it harder than ever for diners to choose one to go to. Besides authentic sushi and a wide range of other Japanese dishes, Kyoto promises to send the customer away will a full stomach and only a half-empty wallet, but there will still be no temptation to spend your savings on a kebab on the way home.

WHILE reinterpretations, remakes and sequels have often unashamedly represented the cinematic version of a ‘cashing-in’ mentality, they at least tended to be the exception rather than the rule, and were often based on an awareness that the original had been groundbreaking or had captured the imagination of a generation. In recent years however, the Hollywood machine seems to have blindly escalated this trend to such an extent that one wonders if they have abandoned the idea of original storytelling altogether, retrained their writers to use nothing else on a keyboard than copy and paste, and replaced their creative energy with marketing executives and product designers from Apple, employed solely to repackage back catalogues and invent new and creative ways of selling sequels or remakes so we don’t know we’re being had - redux, reloaded, director’s cut, costume designer’s cut, final cut, honestly-the-last-cut-ever cut. They have become so adept at pulling this off that some bright spark - possibly the same genius that thought selling white computers rather than black ones would be a sure winner - even found a way of bleeding more cash out of a film (or series of films) that was so clearly and totally concluded that a sequel was impossible. Welcome to the

Ryan Reynolds made a brave but ultimately unsuccessful bid to recover the exciting script that was stolen before the film shooting commenced insipid world of the prequel – from Star Wars I-III and Batman Begins to The Hobbit, this is the pinnacle of filmic dead horse-flogging, and the clearest indication in recent times that Hollywood is more than ever, all about the bottom line. Similarly, at the dawn of what became known as the Silver Age in the late 1950s, DC Comics were also attempting to cash in by reinventing heroes who had suffered the indignity of cancellation a generation earlier. Characters such as The Flash, Hawkman and Green Lantern were thus dusted off and rebooted. Enter the latest incarnation of the Green Lantern franchise, the il-

legitimate 3D love-child of Top Gun and Flubber, an abomination that has the distinction of being both a remake and the pre-cursor to a plethora of sequels, as the clumsily added-on final shot so subtly implies. The opening of the film is no less problematic, with several crudely narrated historical summaries and plodding footnotes of who the galactic players are, heard over 3D vistas of outer space. This is followed by a sequence back on Earth that shuffles through leftovers from every other recent superhero franchise to whip up a grinning, muscle-bound outwardly-adick-but-deep-down-sensitive protagonist Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) whose

childhood traumas and supporting cast are as prêt-à-porter as it gets. Fighter pilot Jordan is a commitment-phobic, bed-hopping, self-sabotaging show-off, yet in true superhero fashion he is mysteriously admired, lusted over and tolerated by all, and inevitably picked by a ring (any ring-related box office winners come to mind?) out of everyone on Earth to become a member of the evil-bashing Green Lantern Corps. He is chosen for his willpower and fearlessness, yet mandatory flashbacks to the traumatising death of little Hal’s father in a fighter plane explosion unpick this essential element of his character by making him fear-

less except when reminded of that day - something that happens quite a bit. Did I mention that the ring could have picked anyone on the planet? Director Campbell depicted updated characterisations of Zorro in The Mask of Zorro and James Bond in Casino Royale as rough successors to heroic traditions, but here he has little to offer other than vacuous pomp and circumstance. Even the fact that Green Lantern is made in 3D is nothing more than another bandwagon gadget, leaving one wishing that instead of three visual dimensions, we had been offered just one dimension of content or creativity.

AFTER only 30 years Robert E Howard’s Conan the Barbarian comes to us again. The original Conan the Barbarian starring a young Arnold Schwarzenegger was a far superior film that had an epic quality. This version is just a tedious revenge film mini-

mal on story, character, and intrigue. In Cimmeria, the northern Lands of the mythical world of Hibernia, Conan is born ‘literally’ right on a battlefield. By the age of ten, Conan, already a junior killing machine, has his world turned upside down when warlord Khalar Zim comes to his village in search of a mysterious mask. This mask, for reasons left a little vague, will give Zim the ultimate power to rule Hibernia. Escaping, but seeing his father and his tribe slaughtered before him, Conan swears vengeance. In the rest of the film an older Conan - played by hulking Hawaiian Jason Momoa - chases Zim, fights Zim, chases Zim, fights in quick suc-

cession Zim’s chief lieutenants, chases Zim, then fights Zim again. Mix in Tamara (Rachel Nichols) - Conan’s love interest - a beautiful girl whose blood is needed to complete Zim’s ritual with the mask, and you have the essential cliché components for a run of the mill, boorish summer release. My verdict is that you should skip this one. If you are interested in Sword and Sorcery I suggest you check out Momoa’s other project, HBO TV series Game of Thrones, instead. Game of Thrones - in which Momoa plays the fearsome Drogo, the khal (king) of the Dothraki tribe - has the epic feel that Conan wishes it could emulate, combined with a more interest-

ing and realistic fantasy world. If you still choose to see Conan despite my misgivings, the only saving graces are decent, but overwrought action sequences and a nice aesthetic look for Hibernia. In earnest, I found myself wanting the last fight - which went on and on and on - to just end so I could leave the theatre. Not a good sign for any film! Only check this out if mindless action is your thing. I can’t recommend this to fans of the Conan franchise either as this felt more like Hollywood’s Hibernia then anything Robert E Howard would have envisioned. DAVE SAURIOL

New this Week Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop Dir: Rodman Flender; US doc, 2011, 89 mins; Conan O’Brien Premiered August 11 American comedian Conan O’Brien makes a comeback on screen with a documentary about his life and career. The camera follows the unstoppable artist as he hits the road with a music-and-comedy show named Legally Prohibited From Being funny on Television Tour, which was created in response to the artist’s contract with NBC, banning him from appearing on television, radio and the internet for six months following his last show. With a 79 percent rating on rottentomatoes.com, the documentary depicts the psychological frustrations, hassles and fears of a talented artist in need of an audience. And though the film is an open window to O’Brien’s personal life, it might not live up to everyone’s expectations: according to the New York Times, this “rock ‘n’ roll comedy extravaganza leaves much to be desired”. VM

Book Your Tickets Exit Through the Gift Shop (3) Dir: Banksy; UK doc, 2010, 87 mins; narrator: Rhys Ifans Banksy is an internationally celebrated English street artist whose true identity remains a mystery, and this is his first foray into film. Whether the film is

fabrication or not, Banksy makes his case convincingly and, in doing so, entertains us with a fascinating insight into his world and ours. MW

Tree of Life (11) Dir: Terence Malick; 2011, 139 mins; Brad Pitt, Sean Penn There are too many beautifully observed moments to dismiss Terence Malick’s fifth film in over 40 years with derision as was the case recently at a Cannes screening. Told in several timelines, the film follows a religious Midwest family in the 1950s and is a rare opportunity to experience pure cinema as it was intended. MW

Beginners (3) Dir: Mike Mills; 2010, 105 mins; Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer Beginners is the touching and often funny account of a rootless son who drifts from relationship to relationship and feels creatively shackled and under-appreciated in his work as an illustrator. Mill’s film is just like poetry, where words and pictures flirt dynamically with one another. MW

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows II (11) Dir: David Yates; 2011, 130 mins; Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint The Harry Potter finale ended an era last July. Cinematic magic follow our heroic threesome with a more assured Harry complementing lightning-quick thinking Hermione and the steady

presence of Ron. With a litany of impossible foes and an actionpacked battle sequence finale, it’s one of the better HP films. SS

Melancholia (15) Dir: Lars Von Trier; 2011, 130 mins; Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg Justine feels trapped in a limousine with her newly wedded husband en route to her own wedding reception. From here, we witness the end of the world: a giant planet called Melancholia is on a course towards Earth. The film brilliantly conveys a paralysing loneliness - the claustrophobic sensation of being trapped inside one’s own skin. MW

Also Playing Super 8 (11) Dir: JJ Abrams; 2011, 118 mins; Elle Fanning, Noah Emmerich Super 8 takes you on a trip to childhood excitement, and is a homage to past Spielberg fantasy adventure movies. The whole ensemble of unknown newcomers winds up creating teenage gawkiness every bit as natural and unforced as the real thing. The relationships between these youngsters are the real heart and soul of the movie. MW

Barney’s Version (3) Dir: Richard J Lewis; 2010, 138 mins; Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman Barney Panofsky is a lonely embittered man, reduced to drinking at home while telephonically

tormenting his ex-wife’s new partner at ungodly hours. The film, an adaptation of the novel Barney’s Version, has one great strength: the comic yet insightful depictions of these relationships that populate an unarguably colourful life. MW

Captain America: The First Avenger (15) Dir: Joe Johnston; US action, 2011, 124 mins; Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving With Captain America: The First Avenger, everything is in place for the biggest gathering of superheroes on celluloid ever. It’s 1942. Steve Rogers is the small scrawny kid with more ailments than ligaments. But with the help of his good friend Howard Stark, Rogers is turned into a physical specimen at its peak level of performance: Captain America is born. While Johnston doesn’t wow us with anything new this time around, at least he has put together a film worth seeing. KE

The Hangover II (11) Dir: Todd Phillips; 2011, 120 mins; Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms The Hangover Part II is the same premise as the first Hangover. Stu is getting married in Thailand with the gang in tow, when his fiancee’s younger brother isfound missing. If the Hangover Part II was not a sequel, it would receive much higher praise, but it set the bar so high that reaching it again is virtually impossible. KE

Midnight in Paris (3) Dir: Woody Allen; UK/ France comedy, 2011, 94 mins; Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams Premiered August 11 At the stroke of midnight, Gil discovers a portal to the 1920s in the shape of an automobile; he is whisked away to a Paris of yesteryear populated by the literary and artistic giants of that age. Despite the promising trailer, a sinking disappointment accompanies the realisation – this is going to be one of Woody’s daffier works. MW

Mr. Popper’s Penguins(7) Dir: Mark Waters; 2011, 94 mins; Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino Adapted from the classic 1938 children’s book by Richard and Florence Atwater, the best thing anyone can say about this film is that kids – some kids – will love it. Popper’s story stays true to its loosely fairytale-ish undertone, with a heartwarming Hollywood-like denouement. KRG

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (11) Dir: Rupert Wyatt; USA Sci-fi 2011, 105 min; James Franco, Andy Serkis Rupert Wyatt succeeds in enticing us with an intriguing concept: in our near future, a drug is being developed with the ultimate aim of curing Alzheimer’s. Unfortunately, what followed that initial idea was didactic and

sometimes illogical with dumbed-down dialogue and performances that too frequently fail to impress. MW

Unknown (15) Dir: Jaume Collet-Serra; 2011, 113 mins; Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger, January Jones Unknown is a chilly little thriller about amnesia, mistrust and lost identity. Interchangeable Euro baddies lurk in the shadows, seeming omniscient and omnipresent, waiting to strike. As the movie reveals itself, you may discover that it reminds you of another superior one, which we will not name for fear of giving away the twist. JH

Avoid like the Plague Transformers III: Dark of the Moon (11) Dir: Michael Bay; US Action, 2011; 150 mins; Shia LaBeouf, Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley Premiered June 23 Bay’s has in the past provided some of the greatest metal-onmetal ass kicking that cinema has to offer, but he’s betting you’ll fail to notice that his metal this time is ugly, rusted junk Optimus Primed for the scrap pile of cinematic history. And at a running time of two and a half hours, that’s paralysing torture. MW

SV1, Thursday 21:30

Poor old Vester Vov Vov! They’re still showing Exit Through the Gift Shop, the documentar y about and directed by acclaimed street artist Banksy, but here it is already on SV1. Narrated by Rhys Ifans, we gave this five out of six stars when we reviewed it back in May (see G19 for a reminder), praising it as “a fascinating insight into his world and ours”. All in all, a good week for docs, with The 9/11 Faker coming a close second to Banksy – with whom its protagonist shares a chilling connection. It’s the stor y of Tania Head, one of only 19 peo-

ple level or above the point of impact when the 9/11 attacks occurred, who went on to sur vive. Only she’s didn’t. No she didn’t die, she lied – the whole thing up was a complete fabrication, and it was only in 2007 that the truth came out, by which time she’d become president of the World Trade Centre Survivors’ Network. And then she just disappeared – just like Banksy, we don’t know who she is. Among the other docs worth catching are the self-explanator y Black Sabbath (SV2, Sat 19:30, repeated Mon 22:45) Wikileaks: War, Lies and

Videotape (SV4, Mon 23:35), and Legendar y Sin Cities (DR K, Mon 20:50), a series that starts, quite fittingly, with Paris. Elsewhere this week, we’ve got Derren Brown: Something Wicked This Way Comes (BBC Entertainment, Sun 22:00), a SV1, Thu 21:30 Exit through the Gift Shop sometimes disturbing live performance by a magician who pushes his audience to the ver y limit; mediocre British crime series DCI Banks (SV1, Sat 21:45); and made for TV movie You Don’t Know Jack, starring Al Pacino as pro-euthanasia doctor, Jack Kevorkian.
