FAITH! I’m not sure what that word instantly conjures up. It’s the kind of word you picture a gospel singer belting out. It’s the word that still keeps most of the world warm at night, even if they are shivering themselves to sleep. Which is kind of apt, because while it keeps them warm, it leaves many in secular countries cold figuratively speaking at least. Faith is the subject of this year’s Golden Days (see G2), a festival that annually presents cultural events associated with a theme. Last year it was the 1700s, the year before the human body, the year before that, the 1920s – it looks like they do a historical period every other year. The 2012 theme will apparently be the 1950s. This year’s festival couldn’t be better timed. Coinciding with the tenth anniversary of 9/11, some of its events – including the Middle East Peace Orchestra - will give us time to reflect on what a test of faith this was – not just in God but humanity. Unsurprisingly,
there are several other events reflecting on 9/11 this week, one of which, The Infinite War, is previewed on G3. Talking of keeping you warm at night, there’s another Poverty Walk in English (see G8) to take part in – an excellent opportunity to learn about how the homeless survive on the same streets that you thrive. Looking ahead, there’s stacks to do between now and Christmas. Here’s a sample of what’s coming up: the Nordic Art Fair (Sep 16-18), Tivoli’s English-language performance of Jesus Christ Superstar (Sep 23-24), the Copenhagen Blues Festival (Sep 28-Oct 2), the Batman show at Forum (Oct 19-23), Culture Night (Oct 14), Ian Burns’ keenly anticipated The Zoo Story (Oct 26-Nov 26), the Copenhagen Irish Festival (Nov 3-6), the Scandinavian Custom Show (Nov 4-6), CPH Dox (Nov 3-13), the Copenhagen Book Forum, (Nov 11-13), the Crazy Christmas Cabaret (starts Nov 9), the Copenhagen Theatre Circle’s Christmas production of Cinderella (starts Dec 15), obligatory Xmas ballet The Nutcracker (starts Dec 3) and the Fireworks Festival at Experimentarium (Dec 28-30). So keep the faith, it’s going to be a fun autumn.
KONTRAPUNKT
Golden Days Festival: FAITH
Various cultural institutions and churches across Greater Copenhagen - secretariat open Mon-Fri 09:00-16:00 at 6 Nørregade, 1165 Cph K; Starts Fri, ends Sep 18; ticket reservation recommended, info@goldendays.dk, 3542 1432; www.goldendays.dk NOW THAT the rainy summer is about to turn to autumn, at least there’s a comforting light in the dark. Copenhagen’s annual historical festival, Golden Days, is tuning up, and if the forces behind it are as dedicated as last year, it will more than take your mind off your September blues. Unlike the summer’s sundry musical festivals, this one is thematic and scattered over most of the city centre, so forget about hitching a tent somewhere. For ten days Golden Days will be a hop-on-hop-off experience designed to enlighten, entertain and stimulate your interest in Copenhagen’s history, then and now. The guiding theme for events this year is ‘Faith’. Faith is a culturally ubiquitous phenomenon that transcends religious ideas, and Copenhagen comes fully equipped for highlighting the subject as scheduled events make use of the city’s churches, auditoria (for panel discussions), art institutions and musical venues. It’s a broad term, as diverse as the people who nourish it and equally applicable to believers in evolution and intelligent design, atheism and Allah. When Einstein considered the unknowable nature of quantum mechanics and made his incredulous response (“God doesn’t play dice”), he was expressing a personal failure to reconcile the latest scientific finding with his faith in the universe. Food for thought. One doesn’t have to revisit such juicy metaphysical anecdotes to see why here’s an important theme for historically-minded Copenhageners. The Golden Days crew call attention to a remarkable change in the role of faith in Danish culture since 9/11 ten years ago. “It’s beyond question that the debate of values following 9/11 has cast faith in a destructive role, as a negative force, which ruins and separates rather than creates and motivates,” festival executive Ulla Tofte tells InOut. “Yet outside of the political arena, faith has become something in which modern people dare to actively engage – whether they study Buddhist philosophy, choose to christen their children or go in for raw food. It’s no longer em-

barrassing to concede that you believe in something larger than yourself – or beyond yourself.” According to festival co-ordinator Karin Gottlieb, Golden Days’ presentation of faith will be independent and non-religious. Faith here is not doctrine or law - it is inner motivation and creative force. “We see rock musicians, poets and painters reclaim faith,” she explains. “Almost like some new subculture in which spirituality, earnestness and metaphysics are not embarrassing relics of the past.” HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:

9 - 15 September 2011 9/11’s questions rage on The Infinite War
Tårnrummet, Nikolaj Kunsthal, Nikolaj Plads 10, Cph K; opens today (Thu Sep 8), 16.00 to 19.00, gallery open Tue-Sun 12:00-17:00 except Thu 12:00-21:00; Free adm; www.kunsthallennikolaj.dk COMMEMORATIONS have begun around the world today (Thursday) as the tragic events of 9/11 are remembered. It’s ten years since the fateful day where nearly 3,000 people lost their lives when New York’s Twin Towers were attacked by terrorists. According to one Danish artist, 9/11 isn’t just the day “the world stood still”, it’s the day our whole society’s mentality changed for good. Jacob Fuglsang Mikkelsen’s exhibition aims to show how fear and confusion have been represented since the event. Aptly named ‘The Infinite War’, Mikkelsen uses photos, film and installations to deliver his powerful message. Having been in New York City at the time of the attacks, Mikkelsen suffered from posttraumatic stress disorder. The art shown in the exhibition is the result of a coping technique used to help remedy his illness. Mikkelsen says that while he was profoundly emotionally affected by the events, they were also inspiring. The opening of Mikkelsen’s exhibition also features the premiere of the documentary film Den sunde skepsis (‘The Healthy Skepticism’). Created by Zune Holm, the film explores the scepticism that exists among a number of conspiracy theorists over what actually happened on that day and who was behind it. Holm’s film asks “Who are these theorists and why are they sceptical about the official explanation given for the event of 9/11?” Among others, the film features Danish architect Jan Utzon, politician Benny Engelbre-

a scientific paper on the event. Along with a group of scientists, Harrit theorises that the towers collapsed due to a calculated explosion from inside the buildings and not due to the torpedoing planes. This conclusion came about after analysing the dust that was gathered in New York immediately after the attack. Harrit believes the dust con-
tains nano-thermite, which is an explosive-like mixture. He says it’s this substance that may have melted the twin towers from the inside, “There is no doubt that this building was taken down in a controlled demolition - I consider this to be [a] mainstream scientific conclusion.” Following the film will be a panel discussion featuring

Terms of Belonging is an international group show that looks at alternative forms of community. Artists in this exhibition collaborate with each other and the audience to produce the artworks. Ahmet Cevdet Bey: Tunnel of Fear focuses on a strange, new collaboration by two Turkish artists, Ahmet Ögüt and Cevdet Erek. The two Istanbul-based artists have merged identities to become a fictional character: mad scientist Ahmet Cevdet Bey. This strange relationship is played out in a ‘chamber of horrors’ style installation about the fictional character and his work. BF

The panel will unpack the following questions: “Have we heard the whole truth about what happened, is it worth the money to go into war on terror? And how should we each handle the fear of new attacks?” The audience is also welcome to present questions.
While the world may never agree about what actually happened on that day, one aspect we all agree on is the profound effect 9/11 has had on the world. Let’s see what the next ten years will bring in terms of creative expression of this event.

The New York City-based painter has an ambivalent fascination with the media, popular culture, and the contemporary 24-hour news cycle. His paintings appear to be historical in content, at first glance, but contain celebrities like Charlie Sheen and Amy Winehouse in celebrated poses on closer inspection. “2011 is fast, painting is slow,” he says. “I am interested in history, but I work in a post-historical period. I make paintings about the time I live in.” Referencing art history and the internet at the same time, Sandford’s painting will at least be entertaining. BF

ESPiTE the obvious connection, this band is not from the Emerald isle. Unconventional, quirky and deliberately confusing, FM Belfast is yet another electro group hailing from that creative little island we know as iceland. Part of a new breed of dance acts, FM Belfast are as energetic as they are original, a stage act that refuses to take itself too seriously. Many of iceland’s musical exports are renowned for spacious, naturalistic and often grey music (think Bjork,
Sigor Ros). FM Belfast deliberately reject this association. Theirs is a music that is more in tune with the city of Reykjavík itself - a departure from the moonscape that dominates the landscape. Rising from the economic turmoil and layers of volcanic ash, FM Belfast are here to celebrate and they want you to join them. Conceived in 2005, the group initially consisted of Árni Rúnar Hlöðversson (Plúseinn) and Lóa Hlín Hjálmtýsdóttir. Working together in the studio led to their desire to perform live and in 2006 the band performed at the iceland Airwaves festival. After attracting Árni Vilhjálmsson and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason, FM Belfast began to find its feet, with their sound becoming more

Tivoli; 20:00: 345-620kr The New York-born R ‘n’ B singer has been one of America’s biggest pop stars since she emerged at the end of the ‘90s with her hit single, ‘Caught Out There’. Becoming increasingly daring and provocative throughout her career – collaborating with some of the most sought-after artists in the world including Moby, N*E*R*D, Outkast, and Björk – Kelis is now at the top of her game, as the strides taken in her latest record Flesh Tone (2010) demonstrated. Based on the booming popularity of her concert at Vega last year, crowds will swarm Tivoli tonight hoping to hear much more than just ‘Milkshake’. DvdN

After a series of successful shows in their native iceland, the group began to venture abroad, finding a small fan base in New York. it was here that they recorded their first album How to make friends in 2008. A unique mixture of uplifting electro and creative electronica, the album sold well in iceland and received steady radio play on underground stations in the UK. Definitely music for the long days of an icelandic summer, the music is a refreshing take on a genre that often tries too hard to be mysterious. How to make friends features an excellent cover of Rage Against the Machine’s ‘Killing in the Name Of ’, which

Frequenting the Montmartre throughout his career, Gordon had a palpable influence on the direction of the jazz scene here in Copenhagen. simple but sophisticated. Their synths are rarely overstated, and their melodies can be both catchy and dreamy at the same time. What makes this group so special is their ability to write tunes that get lodged in your head. Though you might be singing words that make almost no sense, it’s the feeling associated with them that’s more important. FM Belfast is a group to be played at parties and to be enjoyed without studying them too closely. it’s not uncommon for the FM Belfast live act to expand into as many as eight performers, and they work hard to deliver the energy of their records on stage. This will be a show to dance to. Andy Rugg
The Rock; 19:30; 130 kr The former lead singer of metal outfit Life of Agony, New Yorkbased Caputo is one of the biggest voices in heavy rock. Going solo in the late ‘90s, Caputo has since churned out seven alternative heavy metal albums and collaborated with some of the industry’s best-known names – including bassist Flea (Red Hot Chilli Peppers), guitarist Craig Ross (Lenny Kravitz, Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow), and mixer Greg Fieldman (Rage Against The Machine, Johnny Cash). HEN KURT VILE nonchalantly walked on the Vega stage on Tuesday night, it was the Philadelphia singer-songwriter’s fifth appearance in Denmark this year. But far from wearing out his welcome, Danish music fans can’t seem to get enough of Vile’s intoxicating mix of white noise-infused stoner blues-rock and simple, lyrical acoustic strummers. Strolling out alone with just his acoustic guitar in hand, Vile started the evening with an understated performance of ‘Blackberry Song’. His backing band The Violators then took to the stage and the noise and adrenaline were turned up for ‘Runner Ups’, ‘Overnight Religion’ and ‘Jesus Fever’, before slowing back down for ‘On Tour’ and ‘Ghost Town’. The band truly hit their stride with a wild romp through ‘The Hunchback’ in which an otherwise straightforward, nofrills show let loose with flashing lights, and the crowd - along with Vile’s trademark long hair - were whipped into a fury. Oh yes, the hair. Strange that most mentions of Vile seem to include a comment on his long locks. It’s not like he is the first rock-n-roll-

er to sport the look. If anything, Vile looked a bit like the hipster bastard child of Dave Mustaine as he tore through what he jokingly called his “thrash set”. But this wasn’t about looks, it was about the music. And there the show consistently delivered. Whether on harder-charging tracks like ‘The Hunchback’ and ‘Society is My Friend’ or slower, acoustic cuts like ‘Peeping Tomboy’ and ‘In My Time’, Vile had the packed house at Vega eating out of the palm of his hand as
he displayed his talents as both a guitarist and a songwriter. Where Vile could use some improvement, however, is in his showmanship. The concert was punctuated by one too many awkward breaks in the action while Vile tuned his guitar and made lame jokes about being allergic to cats – and hats – while the crowd remained rapt and perhaps overly polite in that particular Danish way. Rarely has a rock show had so many moments of pure silence.
That said, it’s easy to imagine that if Vile went whole-hog embracing a rock star persona, much of the appeal of his simple, lo-fi approach would be lost. Though he’s been called “one of the more important figures in American music”, seeing Kurt Vile in concert is a bit like watching one of your buddies play in a bar – if your buddy happens to be really, really goddamn good.

KIDS CORNER
IT CAN BE HARD for a new family to settle in and even more so in a new country. Although babies are fun and cute, they also come with their challenges. One of which is the amount of time and attention they require. Taking that time to tend to a baby can be the most rewarding moments in the parents’ relationship with their child. Luckily, Denmark has some of the most progressive laws on parental leave, which can be enjoyed by both mothers and fathers. For international families there may be restrictions depending on where each parent comes from (outside or inside the EU), or whether one or both parents have been in the Danish job market prior to the child’s birth. But for those eligible, the benefits are generous. The father, especially, stands to gain, as their rights here are only matched or surpassed by other Scandinavian countries. Roughly, the package includes 52 weeks of parental leave distributed between both parents. Typically, the woman takes nine months and the man three - after the first 14 weeks. Whether or not dad goes on paternity leave depends on, among other factors, how much his income will be reduced and mum’s willingness to ‘give up’ some of her maternity leave. But if you choose to take leave, how would you fill your days with your baby? There aren’t nearly as many activities for dad and baby as there are for mum and baby, so you have to be creative. However, there are a few options. There are structured and semi-structured activities, such as Far på Orlov (Dad on leave), which focuses on music and play, and Fars legestue (Dad’s playgroup) where you can play with baby, meet other fathers and get your

Other than that you can always check your local ‘kulturhus’ or library for parent and child activities. Baby swimming is also a great way to bond with your baby. Check your local pool for classes. If you’re a runner, you can always get a three-wheeled stroller so you can keep on running or go for walks in the woods. Be creative - there are plenty of cafés and parks to explore in the city! And if you run out of ideas after the second month, you can always go on a sunny family holiday - that may require that you overlap your leave with your spouse’s. Fathers who go on paternity leave report that they do it because they want to establish a close relationship with their baby as well as becoming confident in caring for their child. Ending on Saturday, the festival has boasted a fine line-up of performances, sketch shows and surprises. This year the festival expanded to a full two weeks in Copenhagen, and one in Aarhus, with more English language comics than ever. One of them, Daniel Ryan Spaulding from Vancouver, Canada will blend slapstick, story telling and stand-up this Saturday night at UnderKanten. After his UK debut at the Edinburgh Fringe, Spaulding comes to this year’s festival with his show Free Sexy Love Money. Delving into the perspective of a Gen-Y raised in Canada’s socially progressive West Coast, Spaulding will tackle the hot topics of life using a finely tuned ‘bullshit radar’. Think Billy Connolly without the funny pants. Free Sexy Love Money asks the question ‘What do we use to distract ourselves from reality?’ And how do we find happiness and authenticity in a mad, ego-fuelled world? EM

Sit in second hand chairs and look at exposed brick walls - it’s cool
is fresh, simple and balanced. It’s perfect for a balmy night, but would probably go down just as well on a frosty morning. However, the real star of the cocktail list is their signature ‘Ginger Rumba’. Organic elderflower, rum, lime and a healthy serving of fresh ginger give this cocktail quite a kick. It was just the remedy needed for the man cold that I was nursing that afternoon. The Living Room may have a confused identity between café, bar or lounge but restaurant it is clearly not. The menu is light on food, offering a limited but tasty variety of baked goods, sandwiches, wraps and soups. Interestingly, almost all the produce is organic. “I wanted to build a place where I would want to go,” says the owner, Frank Zadi, a Norwegian-born New Yorker who wandered out of a career in IT and finance and into the hospitality scene. He moved to Copenhagen eight years ago, harbouring a secret desire to open a café. That dream was realised when he met his original business partner on a plane. They bought over an outlet of Finnish franchise

Roberts Coffee, turned it into The Living Room, and the rest, as they say, is history. Zadi’s emphasis is on “different and healthy things”, which are “as natural, fresh and organic as possible”. East village haunts in his native New York inspired him. “We didn’t want to offer the same ham and cheese nonsense, we wanted to offer something different but still simple.” Simplicity is a key cornerstone of a business in which the owner takes a hands-on role. He works behind the counter, preparing food and drinks and serving customers. His Queens background seems to keep him down to earth. “We don’t want to be too presumptuous, that’s not me.” It’s this philosophy that underpins The Living Room’s unpretentious presence in an area that can often be painfully hip. You are free to come and go as you please, on your own or in a group, coffee or cocktail - they don’t care as long as you relax, and take it easy. And there’s always the day bed in the corner, in case you feel like staying the night.

METTE MAKES macarons. I’m going there tomorrow to learn how to make them. They’re tricky. She’s already prepared the almond flour and it took hours. They turn out just like in boulangeries in Paris, she says. She says she’s tired of cupcakes. Half a year ago I’d be making macarons too. I’d invite friends for three-course dinners. All of the dishes would be new to me. I’d have small burns on my fingers from getting too close to the grill. My blog would be filled with new experiences; I’d read cookbooks whenever I’d have the chance. And spend more time with Mette. Perhaps we’d be planning a muesli business.

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Copenhagen N; 3535 7535; fourcourse menu 450kr, sevencourse 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you will find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it is well deserved. PDR Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, 1052 Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; www.1th.dk; 1,250kr per person 1th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard to-find-door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; www.reinwalds. dk; five-course menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75215kr Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s-script length of choices confronts you at. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC
Instead I’m running into the supermarket thinking: “What can I make that takes five minutes? What requires just one arm and just a few percent of my brain that’s actually healthy?” I’ll consider something complicated, but give up because I can’t remember the ingredients. The thing is: I had a baby. I can’t concentrate. He wants milk when the pasta is ready. But I’m spoilt; I can’t eat readymade pizza either, so now I’m cooking good, healthy, minimum effort mommy food. Or order sushi. The number one mommy food is bananas. Peel them. And dates - omit the stones. Number two mommy food is fresh salmon, cucumbers and rice. Number three is blueberry muffins. $ $ $
Cap Horn Nyhavn 21, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-00:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-00:00; 3312 8504; starters from 99kr, main courses from 139kr, desserts from 39kr; see www.caphorn.dk for special events Nyhavn, the old harbour, is an idyllic area of magic and hygge what the Danes like to say when referring to anything that is cosy, charming, or delightful: all qualities Cap Horn has in abundance. Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were too highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a ‘best ever veal experience) and the chocolate cake (‘Oh My God’), whih was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! MM BioMio Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Cph V; open daily 12:00-24:00 (later Fri and Sat), kitchen open 12:00-22:00; 3331 2000; starters 75kr, mains 135kr; www. biomio.dk Located in an old warehouse next to trendy Kødbyen, Bio Mio is certainly unusual for conservative Copenhagen. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that they don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that they can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. JH SushiTreat Fox Jarmers Plads 3, Cph V; open Mon-Thu 16:30-22:00, Fri-Sat 16:30-24:00 with Club Treat from 22:00-02:00; 3338 7030 The newly-opened restaurant SushiTreat at the Hotel Fox serves the best California-style sushi in the city, offers an impressive drinks and wine card, and a completely unique atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights when you can order sushi until 2am while listening to some of the city’s best DJs . 9 - 15 September 2011 you want. When the salt water is boiling you remove the pan from the heat and drop your salmon into the water. Put a lid on and leave it there for seven to ten minutes, depending on how big your pieces are. It’s ready when it’s still a little raw inside. The rice makes itself in 15 minutes. When it’s done you can eat salmon, cucumber salad and rice. Or swap the salmon for fresh mackerel. It’s prepared in the same way, but shouldn’t be raw. The blueberry muffins are easy to make. Heat the oven to 170 degrees. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, vanilla sugar and bicarbonate of soda. Then mix buttermilk or runny yoghurt with an egg and add to flour mixture. Add melted butter and make it smooth. Add lots of fresh blueberries, pour the dough into muffin cups and bake them in the oven for 20–25 minutes until they’re not runny on the inside anymore. Congratulations! All that and a happy baby.

On our visit our favourites were the Dum Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. mushrooms and onions to the dish that already includes sides of seasoned fries, fresh coleslaw and ranch beans, ending in a hearty plate of food whose size is unparallelled by nearly any other Copenhagen restaurant. served in a timely fashion, my massive plate of ribs and pulled pork arrived steaming and smothered in deep red and orange sauces. The tender meat easily peeled away from the ribs and lived up to its hickory-smoked description. The sauce was sweet and left me wishing there has been an extra cup of it for dipping.

SUNDAY BRUNCH
For the past eight months, I have been on a student’s budget that has meant copious amounts of rye bread, beetroot and homemade dinners usually consisting of green salads and small servings of fish or pork. Needless to say, I was ready for dining out american-style and the hard rock Cafe suited my needs for large portions, free refills and continual friendly service perfectly. Initially established in 1971 as a quirky Us-style diner in London, The hard rock Cafe has become one of the world’s most recognised brands. a far cry from eric Clapton’s lone guitar hanging on the first diner’s wall, a vibrant array of music memorabilia and old rock concert advertisements now greet you along with flat screen tVs playing top 40 hits in a large and intimately lit two-part dining room. situated adjacent to tivoli and near the city centre shopping hotspots, hard rock maintains a bustling atmosphere and hosts a plethora of tourists and internationals seated among Danes looking to delve into the Us cuisine scene. Upon arrival, guests are greeted in english, which all staff members continue to use throughout the meal, sticking to the american theme. Feeling both at home and hungry, I was ready to eat. as well as the rock ‘n’ roll décor, the restaurant boasts classic deep-fried appetisers, oversized burgers and mouthwatering desserts. Colourful descriptions involve essential keywords such as “famous”, “legendary” and “rich” to uphold the rock star experience. among the plentiful list of longtime american favourites, the new ‘smokehouse’ menu brings a little bit of the american south all the way to Copenhagen. From a full rack of West-tennessee style ribs to the half chicken and smoked pulled pork, these authentic barbeque entrees are slow-cooked within the kitchen walls in the restaurant’s own hardwood smokers. Not only is the meat freshly prepared, but so are the sweet and tangy sauces. “We use fresh ingredients for all of the sauces and they are made with our own recipe. It’s kind of like grandma’s secret recipe but on a much larger scale,” explains assistant general manager Dan Kristensen. Diners have the choice of getting each of the smokehouse menu options on their own, as a duo or in a combo of all three for those who cannot decide and opt for the best of the hard rock’s smokehouse. There is also the option to add grilled
after a mid-meal intermission to digest a bit, I moved on to the pulled pork, which was served over two slices of toast and covered in a sauce that had a slightly spicy taste. Not wanting to bore the tastebuds with the meat alone, the grilled mushrooms and onions added complementary flavors. The coleslaw provided a refreshing interlude to the rich tastes of the other meal options. high on the spicy side, the ranch beans gave the meal the final kick it needed. The only downside to so many different sides was getting a bit uncomfortably full; however, in true
american fashion, I did not hesitate to ask for a take-home container and the leftovers created a delicious lunch the next day. In conjunction with the hard rock Cafe’s 40th birthday celebration, when patrons pair an item from the smokehouse range with a Jack & Ginger (Jack Daniel’s whiskey and ginger ale), they have the opportunity to win a trip this october to Nashville, tennessee, home to a vibrant music scene, southern hospitality and good old fashioned barbeques.

UBMARINE as defined by Cambridge Dictionaries is a boat that can travel underwater. Wikipedia puts a slightly different spin on it - a watercraft capable of independent operation below the surface of the water. Google (man, they are into everything now, aren’t they?!) defines it as a warship with a streamlined hull designed to operate completely submerged in the sea for long periods, equipped with an internal store of air and a periscope and typically armed with torpedoes and/ or missiles. The thing is, no matter how advanced and supplied a submarine is, it cannot stay in the depths forever. Eventually it must surface. Set by the sea in Wales, this darkly funny and gently stirring coming of age film finds Oliver Tate (Roberts) struggling to fit in. He’s 15 and a bit peculiar. He prefers his own company and reads the dictionary for fun. He’s on the outside rim of school society – he’s not popular but he’s never really the one picked on either. He has a very clear objective: to lose his virginity before his next birthday. The only problems is that it will require the participation of someone else! His object of affection Jordana (Paige) is chosen due to the fact that she is not
“I’m a wild adolescent - see, I’m wearing my clothes in the bath. Crazy eh?!” entirely popular either. And so the courtship begins. “To us and a wonderful evening of love making.” At the same time, Oliver is worried about his parents’ relationship. It’s been seven months since the dimmer switch has been turned down – the sign that his parents have been getting it on. Lloyd (Taylor) is a marine biologist, can make porridge seem exciting, and is on the borderline of a depression. Jill (Hawkins) is neurotic and wanting something, anything to peak her interest. And she may have found it in an old flame that moved in next door – a new age ‘ladies man’ Graham (Considine).
Oliver now must try to start up his own romance while trying to get his parents back on track. Submarine makes quirkiness seem like a good thing again. “My mother is worried I have mental problems,” worries Oliver. “I found a book about teenage paranoid delusions during a routine search of my parents’ bedroom.” Director Ayoade got it dead on with the way that Oliver is flawed. He’s not the quintessential movie teen - he has more depth than that. To first impress Jordana he participates in teasing a girl in their school with whom he used to be friends. On the negative side, many of

by the US press. The Wall Street Journal gave it a perfect score, writing that it’s “wonderfully funny and subversively affecting” while Time said that it’s “a cagey delight”. Oliver begins the movie by saying that he often imagines his life as a dislocated reality playing as a film before his eyes. By the end of it, he is smack dab in real life. He’s embarrassed in school. Finally, when all seems lost, he finds himself together with Jordana, wondering about the present and the future, while wading deeper and deeper into the Welsh sea. ‘holy Wars’ – Documentary of the Month 9-13 Sept.: An intense meeting between a Muslim fundamentalist and a Christian fanatic. “‘Holy Wars’ agnostic approach effectively modulates the intense battle of wills that develops between the uniquely compelling subjects” – Variety. We present some 50 films with English dialogue or subtitles every month. See what’s on at dfi.dk/english
the film’s scenes are useless fluff, filling time without really adding story elements or emotional weight to the characters. Perhaps Ayoade felt compelled to ensure his first feature length film was longer than 90 minutes so as to avoid any comparison to his music videos. These extras manage to further stall a film that was already slow moving. Luckily, they don’t totally detract from the overall product and you’ll like it if you like slow (some might say boring), character-driven films. It has the pacing of an old milk cow sauntering up to the milker. The film is very British in many ways, but has also been received well

OR WHAT feels like an eternity, Tom Hanks has been the king of clean, wholesome all-American goodness, selecting roles that offer him up as a paragon of integrity and soft-spoken heroism, shrewdly crafting his on-screen
persona while carefully maintaining a sense of utter guilelessness. It would now seem that Carell is vying for this dubious honour as he distances himself from the ghettoes of TV-land and into the national psyche of the cinemagoing American public. Carell teeters on the brink of the same kind of self-congratulatory career-moulding here, as he shamelessly re-enacts his 40-Year-Old Virgin character - a sexually stunted, middle-aged man who is unexpectedly cast off by his childhood sweetheart. He stumbles and fumbles his way through the dating scene, until he comes under the tutelage of slick, serial seducer Gosling, a latter-day Pygmalion who takes Carell under his wing. “I’m go-
ing to help you rediscover your manhood,” he tells Carell. “Do you have any idea when you lost it?” “A strong case can be made for 1984,” replies Carell dejectedly. What ensues is the kind of fitfully funny, finely manicured romcom that is expertly calibrated to hit all the correct happy places. Carell and Gosling do make an appealing buddy couple, and both are nimble enough to sidestep egregious caricature, with Gosling especially alluring as a lithe and ruthless tomcat whose seductive presence suggests we may have found the next George Clooney. It would be dishonest to say there’s no outright pleasure to be had here. There are universal hu-
man foibles at its core, especially regarding the midlife ennui that can torpedo the strongest of marriages, as well as the abiding theme of men grappling with a slipping sense of self. However, in the slapstick finale where all the loose ends are superfluously tied up, what was clearly meant to be sentimental and lighthearted instead feels incredibly forced, contrived and hopelessly banal, with all the bittersweet comic potential lost. While Hollywood has never particularly aspired to represent reality, adult dramas and comedies should at least attempt to retain a semblance of commonality with the lives of their audiences, and this film certainly does not. New this Week The Greatest movie Ever Sold Dir: Morgan Spurlock; 2011, 88 minutes; Morgan Spurlock. From the guy that Bought you Super Size Me acclaimed filmmaker and master provocateur Morgan Spurlock brings you the first every ‘docbuster’! In The Greatest Movie Ever Sold Spurlock tries to uncover the secrets that big name advertising companies use to sell you their products. Viewers follow him as he convinces a variety of highprofile sponsors to let him pitch their products as ‘The Greatest’. Enlightening and frightening, the film uncovers some interesting truths and shows. Spurlock has the gift of gab and isn’t shy about coming forward. Disarming candid and playful, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold sees Spurlock sell his soul so you won’t have to. EM
Zookeeper (3) Dir: Frank Coraci; 2011, 102 minutes; Kevin James, Rosario Dawson and Leslie Bibb Take heed of the advice of the Christian Science Monitor which says “... there should be a subdivision of the ASPCA -American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Audiences.” James is reasonably funny, but although he keeps the film passable he once again shows that he is not able to carry the role of romantic lead. Plus it’s hard to see what audience the film makers
were aiming for, because the humour is often too adult for the kids that would doubtlessly be interested in it, due to its marketing as a family movie. VS
Colombiana (11) Dir: Olivier Megaton; 2011, 107 minutes; Zoe Saldana, Michael Vartan, Callum Blue A little like the iconic movies with Lara Croft, except without Lara Croft and, quite frankly, not as good. The film is low on plot, but high on explosions and clichés. You can’t blame the actors for the failings - they are working with a wooden script (as New York Magazine said, “ ... the lines sound like place-cards.”) and a sometimes ludicrous story (no thanks to co-writer, Luc Besson - the French film director of The Fifth Element fame). To be fair, Colombiana does have some exciting action scenes, and isn’t a film for the faint hearted. But, all in all, this film is best suited for the 13 year old adolescent, whose parents have censored their internet access.VS

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ii (11) Dir: David Yates; 2011, 130 mins; Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint The Harry Potter finale ended an era last July. Cinematic magic follows our heroic threesome with a more assured Harry complementing lightning-quick thinking Hermione and the steady presence of Ron. With a litany of impossible foes and an actionpacked battle sequence finale, it’s one of the better HP films. SS
melancholia (15) Dir: Lars Von Trier; 2011, 130 mins; Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg Justine feels trapped in a limousine with her newly wedded husband en route to her own wedding reception. From here, we witness the end of the world: a giant planet called Melancholia is on a course towards Earth. The film brilliantly conveys a paralysing loneliness - the claustrophobic sensation of being trapped inside one’s own skin. MW

Horrible Bosses (11)
Dir: Terence Malick; 2011, 139 mins; Brad Pitt, Sean Penn There are too many beautifully observed moments to dismiss Malick’s fifth film in over 40 years with derision as was the case recently at a Cannes screening. Told in several timelines, the film follows a religious Midwest family in the 1950s and is a rare opportunity to experience pure cinema as it was intended. MW
Dir: Seth Gordon; 2011; 100 mins; Jason Bateman, Charlie Day Old friends Nick, Kurt and Dale are conscientious workers. Their immediate superiors happen to be the vilest people they have ever known. Ferociously plotdriven with several hilarious scenes, Horrible Bosses unfolds like dominos tumbling faster
and louder, creating ever grimmer repercussions for the main characters, a likeable bunch of average guys. KRG
Super 8 (11) Dir: JJ Abrams; 2011, 118 mins; Elle Fanning, Noah Emmerich Super 8 takes you on a trip to childhood excitement, and is a homage to past Spielberg fantasy adventure movies. The whole ensemble of unknown newcomers winds up creating teenage gawkiness every bit as natural and unforced as the real thing. The relationships between these youngsters are the real heart and soul of the movie. MW
Bobby fischer Against the World (11) Dir: Liz Garbus; 2011; 93 min Cast: Bobby Fischer, Regina Fischer Bobby Fischer reassuringly reminds us that the price of success is one that most would not wish to pay. With archive footage, photographs, and with contemporary interviews familiar to countless other documentary portraits, this is a poignant and unsettling film, but Garbus provides no revelations for anyone who has followed Fischer’s story. But with the help of his good friend Howard Stark, Rogers is turned into a physical specimen at its peak level of performance: Captain America is born. While Johnston doesn’t wow us with anything new this time around, at least he has put together a film worth seeing. KE

Dir: Todd Phillips; 2011, 120 mins; Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms The Hangover Part II is the same premise as the first film. Stu is getting married in Thailand with the gang in tow, when his fiancee’s younger brother isfound missing. If The Hangover Part II was not a sequel, it would receive much higher praise, but it set the bar so high that reaching it again is virtually impossible. KE
Dir: Martin Campbell; US sci-fi action, 2011, 114 mins; Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively Enter the latest incarnation of the Green Lantern franchise, the illegitimate 3D love-child of Top Gun and Flubber, an abomination that has the distinction of being both a remake and the precursor to a plethora of sequels. The film leaves one wishing that instead of 3D, we had been offered just one dimension of content or creativity. AS
midnight in Paris (3) Dir: Woody Allen; UK/ France comedy, 2011, 94 mins; Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams Premiered August 11 At the stroke of midnight, Gil discovers a portal to the 1920s in the shape of an automobile; he is whisked away to a Paris of yesteryear populated by the literary and artistic giants of that age. Despite the promising trailer, a sinking disappointment accompanies the realisation – this is going to be one of Woody’s daffier works. MW

Cowboys and Aliens (11) Dir: Jon Favreau; 2011, 118 minutes; Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford Two of the most incompatible genres combine in this film, to make it a series of mind numbing pointless plot strands. Looking more like a satirical piece on the cowboy genre, the film takes itself far too seriously. You’ll likely leave the cinema wondering how this piece of filmmaking actually made it to cinemas when it should have been trashed after the first draft. AS

America: The Story of US
spor t THE W OF EEK
DR2, Monday - Friday 18:15
The title America: The Story of US implies the world would be nowhere if it wasn’t for the ingenuity of our friends in the States, and they’ve probably got a point. Let’s face it, they always do things bigger – and without their mass oil and steel production, the modern age would probably still be around the corner. This 12-hour docudrama series is a must for anyone who still feels shaky about the last 400 years of American history, but doesn’t want to read a book to find out more. This is a visually appealing, dumbed-down history lesson of the highest order – hell, they’ve even asked Puff Daddy to contribute. Staying in the States, it’s the tenth anniversary of 9/11 this Sunday. 102 Minutes that Changed
America (DR1, Sun 16:45) looks at that dramatic morning as seen through the eyes of nine New Yorkers; 9/11: State of emergency (SV2, Sat 21:30) looks at it from the perspective of the main players - from Condoleezza Rice to the aid who interrupted George Bush’s appearance at a kindergarten to whisper in his ear: “America is under attack” – and debate forum Intelligence Squared (BBC World, Sat 10:10) looks at it retrospectively, tackling the motion ‘The war on terror was the right response to 9/11’. Elsewhere, Saving Africa’s Witch Children (DR1, Tue 23:35) looks at how Nigerian kids are slaughtered by Christian pastors for apparently causing catastrophes; Automorphosis (DR2,
Sat 21:35) is a quirky doc about eccentrics who transform their cars into artwork; the Spike Guys Choice Awards 2011 is at the forefront of the men’s lib movement; Vera (SV4, Sun 21:00) is yet another British crime series with an unconventional star (Brenda Blethyn) and so, so predictable formula; there are new series of Gok’s DR2, Mon-Fri 18:15 America: The Story of US Fashion Fix (TV2 Zulu, Thu 17:15), and Waking the Dead (SV1, Sun 21:00); and several films you might have been saving for a cosy evening at home including the terrible Bride Wars (SV4, Sat 21:30), the average Vantage Point (TV3 Puls, Mon 21:00), the intriguing Genova (DR2, Wed 20:30) and quite good Frost/Nixon (TV3 Puls, Wed 21:00).
