HOW IS IT that rock climbers are always in such good nick?

All they do is cling and dangle, and yet they’re always so lithe and streamlined, while we sweat our guts out, running or playing vigourous sport, and look like Uncle Buck.

It makes you wonder why they cast Sylvester Stallone in Cliffhanger. Is his physique really that of the typical mountain climber? But then again, they did cast John Lithgow as a Brit with one of the most unconvincing accents in movie history, and Michael Rooker as a nonpsychopath – although he does get to shoot somebody from close range with a massive gun and throw him off a cliff with the line “Season’s over, asshole!”, or was it “Gravity’s a bitch, ain’t it?” Maybe the film had a clever against-type thing going on.

Anyhow, this week we’ve got a preview of the best places to go climbing (see Select Shopping on G9), and among the venues

is one of my personal favourite spots in town, Nørrebrohallen, although last time I was there I did get stopped while I was leaving the place by someone who claimed to own the whole street and wanted to know how I could have the temerity to glance at his sacred, landowning face.

Don’t let that put you off – this is a great place to play sport … because it’s so cheap! You and some friends can rent one of the sizeable football courts for well under a half of what most of the sports halls in Copenhagen charge. And providing you don’t look at the locals, you’re quids in.

Likewise at the annual Blues Festival (see G3 for details), all the concerts at the Rodovre Centrum shopping centre are free, which includes most of the main acts. Now we’re not sure if the consumerist interior of a mall is the most conducive atmosphere for a genre of music that arose out of people singing about their abject poverty, but a free concert’s a free concert.

Now you mention it, don’t blues artists tend to be thin and jazz musicians fat? It must be because they’re staying true to their poverty roots – either that or it’s rock climbing.

Sex, death, and jealousy permeate this strippeddown, but highly moving presentation of Puccini’s classic opera. The show, directed by Peter Langdal, with set design by Karin Betz, and lighting design by Jesper Kongshaug, runs until November 7.

One of the world’s most popular operas, Tosca ,which is set in Rome around 1800, centres on the beautiful opera singer Floria Tosca and her lover, the painter Mario Carvadossi, as they try to outwit the evil police chief, Baron Scarpia.

Scarpia manipulates the lovers as he tracks the escaped political prisoner, Angelotti, who is on the run and hiding out with Carvadossi’s help.

Scarpia plots to re-capture Angelotti and have the lovely Tosca for his own.

In their tempestuous scenes, Tosca and Carvadossi alternate between passionate quarrels and the intimate embraces of reconciliation because of her near constant fits of jealousy. She continually suspects Carvadossi of being unfaithful with another woman and he must convince her otherwise with his poetic words. The sopranos Gitta-Maria Sjöberg and Anne Margrethe Dahl alternate the starring role, while the internationally acclaimed tenors Stuart Neill, Andrew Richards, and Jean-Pierre Furlan perform her lover. The character of Tosca was based on the famous 19th century diva, Sarah Bernhardt, a celebrated but temperamental actress, known for her beautiful voice and scandalous personal life. Berhnhardt actually performed the title role in La Tosca, the theatrical version, written and directed by Victorien Sardou, on which Puccini based his opera.

With the passionate temperaments of its main characters and the tragic spiralling story arc, Betz and Kongshaug have worked hard to create a set and lighting scheme that could capture the dark atmosphere of Tosca. Each of the three acts features colour-co-ordinated lighting, with deep reds or dark blues bathing the stage to match the emotional musical cues of the orchestra and opera singers. The Royal Op-

era House’s movable stage delivers a constantly shifting, fun-house effect, creating a spiralling sense of depth and darkness, highlighted with graphic video projections. Alternating strips of bright red, white, pink, or blue light glow along the edges of the stage before terminating in the background. Candelabras, smoke, gauze, and huge silver goblets contrast with the stark lighting scheme for the overall effect of a ‘goth’ music club night, which strangely works with the melodramatic story line. Characters are clothed in costumes appropriate to the time period of Europe in the 1800s, while the minimalist set offers a futuristic backdrop, making the love story of jealousy, betrayal, and intrigue timeless. Rather than detracting from the music, the carefully orchestrated set design foregrounds the

Combining music, acting and dance, the show follows the story of young Afghani student Farhad, who

Several moments of passion and not a few dramatic deaths, including a suicide and murder, make the near three-hour long production move quickly. The opera is performed in Italian with Danish supertitles, but it is not hard to follow the unfolding drama, and an English summary is included in the programme.

With a story that rivals any contemporary plot line, music that pulls you in, and a creative set and lighting design, The Royal Danish Opera House’s new production of Tosca is well worth the price of admission.

La Sylphide is the only tragedy in August Bournonville’s repertoire.

He liked his happy endings, but since this story was not actually his own, he did not have a choice - thank god for that! Because it is the most heartbreakingly beautiful story you will ever see. Along with Flemming Flindt’sThe Lesson, these two ballets are among the most important works in the repertoire of the Royal Danish Ballet, so if you feel like the backbone of your basic ballet knowledge is a bit wobbly, this is the perfect double bill to fill in those missing parts. AT THE UPCOMING Copenhagen Blues Festival - now breaking into its second decade at city-wide clubs, cafes, and even churches (reminding us of the gospel roots of the blues) - we will be treated to the best, the newest, and always the bluesiest.

It’s a five-day festival at which we’ll be able to test the much-quoted “The blues ain’t nothin’ but a good man feeling bad/thinkin’ about the woman he once had,” an axiom taken from the lyrics of early 20th Century Mississippi singer and picker Jimmie Rodgers (actually a white guy). Leon Redbone, another white fella, is sometimes credited with this line; some female blues singers have amended it to “a good woman feeling bad”.

But with its MississippiDelta origins, and migration up north to the South Side of Chicago, there is little doubt that it is a form created by, and best expressing, the ups and downs (mostly downs) of African-Americans.

Nevertheless, the only relevant colour this week is blue. There are over 50 performances spread out over five days, and this reporter’s top two picks coincide with those of the festival organisers who chose them to open and close the festival.

Exhibitions Peep Show

NEW

Koh-i-noor, Dybbølsgade 60, Cph V; starts Sept 23, ends Oct 2; open Thu-Sun 14:0018:00; www.koh-i-noor.org Vesterbro’s most popular artist-run gallery, Koh-i-noor, presents new work by local artist Mia Helmer.

In Peep Show she combines footage of her recent eye surgery with news footage of US President Barack Obama as he watches the capture of Osama Bin Laden in a meditation on seeing and notseeing. The artist includes painting, drawing, photography, and installation, and explores how we look, see, and experience the world through our eyes. The tiny gallery space is not enough to contain Helmer’s work and a surprise component of her installation appears on the street. BF

Based in Chicago, but originally from the small town of Camden in Mississippi, Primer honed his skills and solidified his reputation at Theresa’s Lounge on Chicago’s South Side, playing the guitar and singing. Soon enough, he was asked to join the bands of Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, and Magic Slim. These days he’s on the road a good deal of the time. “I am very excited to come back and play my blues music for the people of Copenhagen!” he told InOut. “I have been in contact with the band and we are all set to bring some great Chicago-style blues to the people!! Please tell everyone to come out and help to keep the blues alive!”At both gigs, Primer will be appearing alongside the Nisse Thorbjørn Band.

Holmes Brothers

Gospel Koncert at Christians Kirke; Sun Oct 2, 15:30; 150kr & Rodovre Centrum; Sat Oct 1, 14:00; free adm It was also a good choice to have the remarkable Holmes Brothers put their stamp on the festival. The most soulful threesome you can imagine, blood brothers Sherman and Wendell Holmes, along with their honorary brother, Popsy Dixon, are originally from Virginia, and present a creative mix of blues, R&B, country, gospel and soul music. They’ve recorded with Willie Nelson, Van Morrison, Rosanne Cash, and performed for President Bill Clinton. (Their recent album release, Feed My Soul, is a tribute to Wendell’s successful battle with cancer.) If you have to choose between the gigs, spring for the extra 150 and go to the gospel concert for an atmospheric reminder of the blues’ sacred origins.

As an extra bonus, it includes well-regarded Danish tenor sax Anders Gaardman.

Sigurdur Situations

Gudmundsson:

Moderna Museet, NEW Gasverksgatan 22, Malmö, Sweden; starts Sep 23, ends N o v 7; open Tue-Sun 11:00-18:00; tickets 50kr, free adm to under-18s; www.modernamuseet.se A new retrospective of the work of Icelandic artist Sigurdur Gudmundsson appears at the Moderna Museet in Malmö. This exhibition focuses on a series of photographs taken by the artist in the 1970s and 80s. Experimental artists and art movements, like the Fluxus movement of the 1960s, inspired the images. They are somewhat obscure in nature and feature the artist in strange situations, such as digging a useless hole in the ground or hiding beneath a paving stone. The result is a comical and surreal body of photographs.

Gudmundsson also works in painting, sculpture, performance, and installation, and viewers can see elements of his work in other media in his photography. BF

They might not be called Sherlock and Mycroft, but The Holmes Brothers are here to satisfy our elementary need for quality blues

The American slide guitarist, now a resident of Germany (and who can blame him?), grew up in orphanages after his father was killed by the Ku Klux Klan.

This tale is immortalised in his Louisiana Red Orphanage Home Blues. Red is internationally renowned, having played at BB King’s in New York City among other world class venues, and is

Galleri Christoffer Egelund, Gredgade 75, Cph K; starts Sept 23, ends Oct 23; open Mon-Fri 12:00-18:00, Sat 12:00-16:00; www.gce.nu Galleri Christoffer Egelund presents new work by the New York City-based artistic duo Ghost of a Dream, Adam Eckstrom and Lauren Was. The pair are known for their colourful collages and installations featuring the garish design of scratch-off lottery tickets. Pasted in repeating patterns, the lottery tickets create imagery that is at once seductive and sad.

‘We spend our lives as we spend our day’ marks the first solo exhibition in Denmark for Ghost of a Dream, who have exhibited in Basel, Beijing, and Berlin, among other locations. In addition, to the lurid colours of the lottery tickets, the team also use tawdry romance novel covers, mirrors, and other found objects in their installations and collages, creating an overall effect of desire and loss. Gaugin & Polynesia: An Elusive Paradis

The work of the influential artist will be on display next to close to 60 artefacts of Polynesian culture, such as jewellery, cult statues, and weapons. Gaugin was inspired by and spent a large amount of time in the Polynesian islands, especially in Tahiti. The graphic, colourful painting style he devel-

Frandsen, part of the ‘wild painter’ movement from the 1980s in Denmark. Primarily a painter, Frandsen has been exploring new mediums and experimenting with large-scale installations in the past decade. He often paints on to photographs and mixes drawings with paintings.

Frandsen finds inspiration in his family, sexuality, and flowers. BF

Harrington is a self-described “mother of gospel workshops in Germany”, but is an expatriated American.

Fried Okra Band

Metromomen; Oct 1, 16:00; 60kr Not just for their clever name, but for their very cooking performances and style, also check out the Fried Okra Band - which despite their title are a Danish group - at Metromomen on October 1 for just 60 kroner.

So what’s not to like here? Very little, and so very much to chose from.

Entropia: a photographic chaos theory of Copenhagen

Danish Architecture Centre, Strandgade 27 B, Cph K; ends Oct 23; open daily 10:00-17:00, Wed 10:0021:00; tickets 40kr, students 25kr, under-15s free adm, Wed 17:00- 21:00 free adm; www.dac.dk This is an exhibition of architectural photographs that tries to rethink what typical architectural photography looks like. Kontraframe (Tobias Wensien and Thorbjørn Hansen) presents a ‘chaotic snapshot of the city’s development’ over six years that documents its changing urban landscape. Images of new buildings in the messy process of being built present a contrasting narrative when compared with the slick finished product. Kontraframe works with construction firms, architectural companies, and public authorities around Copenhagen. This gives them access to create new representations of architectural products. BF

Exhibitions Warhol & Basquiat

Arken Musuem of Modern Art, Skovvej 100, Ishøj; ends Jan 11; open Tue-Sun 10:00-17:00, Wed 10:00-21:00; tickets 85kr, Students 70kr, under-17s free adm; www. arken.dk Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, together, represent the art world of New York in the 1980s. When they met, Basquiat was an emerging grafitti artist, equally at home making artwork on city walls as on canvas. Warhol was already famous for his screen prints of American popular culture icons, like Marilyn Monroe, his films, and his association with the Factory, an art hang-out where he also made work. From 1983-85, the two artists collaborated on making a series of paintings together. The exhibition showcases more than 100 of these collaborative works, as well as, individual pieces by the two passionate artists. This is the first time the two artists’ collaborative paintings have been shown in Denmark. BF

Hotel Nikolaj

Kunsthallen Nikolaj, Nikolaj Plads 10, Cph K; ends Oct 30; open Tue-Sun 12:00-17:00, Thu 12:00-21:00; www.kunsthallennikolaj.dk Hotel Nikolaj is the ninth annual children and young people’s exhibition at Kunsthallen Nikolaj, a unique exhibition hall in an old church building. This year the theme is an interactive seaside hotel. Hotel Nikolaj comes alive with theatre performances by international artists, video projections and strange smells throughout the gallery halls. Enter themed rooms and meet strange guests, as though you were in a real hotel. This promises to be a magical experience - perfect for families. BF

V1 Gallery, Flasketorvet 69, Cph V; ends Oct 8; open Wed-Fri 12:00-18:00, Sat 12:00-16:00; www.V1gallery. com V1 Gallery has locations in Copenhagen and New York. These two concurrent exhibitions reflect this international relationship. In Jesus Christ Get off My Back, Danish artist Thomas Øvilsen leans his paintings against the wall so gallery-goers have to turn them around for viewing. Meanwhile, Subtopian by the US artist Ben Blatt is a little more subdued in what it asks of the audience. Blatt works in watercolour making illustrative paintings of terrariums and abandoned architectural spaces. While Øvilsen works with multiple materials and layers to make sculptural paintings, Blatt works with thin washes of paint creating more delicate imagery.

Alright Alright & Big Bubble

Malmö Konsthall, Johannesgatan 7, Malmö; ends Nov 27; open daily 11:00-17:00; www.konsthal.malmo.se Bright colours, large-scale, playful installations and naïve drawing styles characterise these two exhibitions. Chris Johanson is a self-taught artist from the US heavily influenced by Californian skateboarding and graffiti culture, who creates his work from recycled paint and second-hand materials. In Alright Alright, he presents new drawings and paintings and a giant pyramid-shaped sculpture.

Japanese artist Misaki Kawai, the creator of Big Bubble, works in a simple, manga comic book drawing-style making graphic paintings, drawings, and artists’ books. BF

In large-scale oil paintings he renders expressive figures that appear to be stills pulled from American western movies. The brightly-coloured images are of gun-toting women, fierce wild animals, and dour generic Native American chiefs. In addition gallery goers can view limited edition prints and works on paper by the artist. White, whose work is related to Pop Art, says: “My work is always influenced and inspired by the things I love. I’m excited to present this latest body of work, exploring the classic imagery of the West I grew up with as a child.” BF

Blue Notes

Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, Flæsketorvet 85, Cph V; ends Oct 8; open Tue-Fri 13:00– 18:00; Sat, 12:00–16:00; www.bjerggaard.com Danish photographer Erik Steffensen’s new collection of his signature expressionistic images.

The title refers to the blue note a musical term for a note played at a lower pitch and held out longer, typically in jazz, rock or blues music. Inspired by popular culture, like David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, and art history alike, Steffensen’ s photographs are a mix of film and painting references blended into dream-like images.

Living: Frontiers of Architecture III-IV

HYPNOTIC , ELECTRONIC, and ROBOTIC My Robot Friend

Loppen, Sydområdet 4B, 1440 Cph K; Thu 21:00; Tickets 100kr; 3257 8422; www.loppen.dk THE ARTIST and producer Howard Robot is the solo performer in this electro-pop project from New York City. On stage he is a robot, dressed in a homemade, low-tech costume replete with red Christmas lights wound round a hat. Taking old-school cues from Devo and Kraftwerk, My Robot Friend combines danceable beats with all-out electronic variety in sound, style and lyrics. Qualifying as both dance and alternative music, as far as labels can stretch, his live performances are both stylish and theatrical.

My Robot Friend’s adventure working as a robot started in 2001, after dancing with choreographer Michael Gutierrez in the Le Tigre video ‘Deceptacon’. In the music video both men are dancing side by side, bouncing through a routine of mechanical aerobic moves, while dressed in tan jumpsuits, dome-shaped yellow hats, red sneakers and Nintendo power gloves. This live-action, video-game fun includes camp antics in the synchronised moves, as well as simple nostalgia for the ‘silly days’. The experience inspired Howard Rigberg to change his last name to Robot and create a whole stage persona around the character of a robot, who dances and makes music with other machines. The first full-length album Hot Action! came out in 2002 and spawned enough hits to be re-released by Poptronix in 2004. On his second album, Dial 0, My Robot Friend collaborated with a number of humans, including Antony Hegarty from Antony and the Johnsons on the track ‘One More Try’.

Robotic dance moves and a certain amount of irony also appear in more recent songs like ‘Robot High School’ and ‘We’re the Pet Shop Boys’. The former is a single from the 2009 album Soft-Core, and includes lyrics like “Shipped me back from a secret location/my legs came back later in a plastic bag” and “So they put me in a special classroom/where everybody is a robot.” The album is another collaborative effort, featuring guest appearances by guitarist Dean Wareham (famous for the shoegazer bands Luna and Galaxie 500), vocalist Alison Moyet (from the synth pop duo Yazoo), and drummer Joey Waronker (of Beck and R.E.M. fame).

My Robot Friend remains popular for live performances that are partly human silliness, but entirely crazy electro pop. In a 2002 interview Robot said: “That’s all I work with: machines, other machines.” Dressed in a suit covered with blinking red lights, he said: “My robot skin is designed for visibility at long distances away, for my own protection.”

The concert at Loppen promises to be another event full of night-time robot dancing and music-making machines.

The genuine article, his lyrics echo the journeys of American traveller Woody Guthrie and his guitar hooks sound like some old Appalachian blues LP that you’d find in a thrift store.

Possessing an uncanny ability to channel atmosphere, passion and energy into beautifully crafted folk-pop songs, the quartet are one of Britain’s most cultured fusion groups, as their latest record, Walk River (2011), attests. Despite a minor lapse following the release of their EP, La Musique (which sounded, dare I say it, passé), their new album Safari Disco Club (2011) is more encouraging, risky, and aspiring, resembling the vintage brand of electro that Yelle were once famed for.

Because Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s original 1971 musical, which this weekend is being staged three times at Tivoli to mark its 40th year, cooked up the unholiest stink seen since Judas Iscariot’s innards spattered out all over the Mount of Olives in 33AD. The musical was banned in pro-apartheid South Africa for being “irreligious”, Jewish groups said it enforced AntiSemitism – the high priests are particularly repellant – and Christian groups reacted strongly to Rice’s admission that “we don’t see Christ as God but simply the right man at the right time at the right place.”

Nevertheless, the most common reason why many have never seen it is because they have an aversion to Lloyd Webber. Cats, Starlight Express and Phantom of the Opera –

Deep Purple’s lead singer Ian Gillan knew this early doors, which explains why he sung the role of Jesus on the definitive original album.

Granted, Rice’s lyrics are just plain tacky – there’s no getting away from that. And a fair number of the songs are just there for comic respite (most

notably King Herod’s Song – my favourite until I turned 13) or overly-sentimental (any number involving Mary) – although you’ll appreciate these for giving you the chance to get your breath back. Overpowered by the music, every part of your body will move as you struggle with the no-standing policy.

But while the part of Jesus is an electric one – the piercing falsetto of ‘Gethsemane’ is fittingly his high point – it’s the role of Judas that gives the music its rock gravitas. As one of musical theatre’s most challenging roles, betrayal has never sounded this good be-

fore, particularly in ‘Damned for All Time / Blood Money’ and ‘Judas’s Death’ – the two songs in which he shares the stage with the priests Caiaphas and Annas.

I was lucky enough to see the acclaimed mid-1990s London revival, the so-called Lyceum Production, and will be intrigued to see how the Danish theatre company Teatret Gorgerne fare with the material this weekend. For just over 200 kroner, it’s a gamble worth taking, because this is the best rock opera the world has ever known.

FOR 40 YEARS Christiania has been a fixture of Copenhagen cultural life, and on September 26 it will be having a massive birthday celebration. Cake, music, and a spirit of revelry will take place under a warm, enveloping cloud of marijuana smoke. Alternative culture and bohemian pathos will be celebrated by the approximately 1,000 Christiania locals and anyone else looking for a good party.

Forty years old, but hardly middle-aged, Christiania will showcase the independent spirit that has made it a hallmark of Copenhagen life.

Back in 1971, in the pursuit of some green space for their children to play, Danish hippies knocked down the fence on the corner of Prinsessegade and Refshalevej and went into the disused navy base that would become known as Christiana. Under the leadership and ideals of journalist and activist Jacob Ludvigsen, the residents of Christiania formed a mission statement citing unaffordable housing as the reason that Christiana was needed. That moment began an immigration of all types of ‘new age thinker’ and a new society blossomed in the ‘freed land’.

Christiania began the open sale of marijuana - fuelling both an alternative culture and an increase in the quality of the drug. In a display of Denmark’s tolerance this sale was allowed largely unhindered until 2004 before sanctions were brought in to moderate it.

And Christiana’s liberal conceptualisation of property ownership, and by extension property tax, also led to tension

Expect more celebrations like the one at Christiania this spring

with the authorities, and for a long time it looked like the city council might actually sell the land to developers. However, in the end it agreed to sell Christiana to its members, who are now in the process of purchasing their land and gaining legal legitimacy. In honour of this development, the 40th birthday is sure to be that much more special and a celebration of both Christiania’s past and its future.

The celebrations on Monday will kick off with a free breakfast. There will also be cake, a film in the afternoon, and of course loads and loads of free music. Among the main performers over the day are: Car Park North As one of Denmark’s leading rock bands, their electronic rock, catchy choruses and assertive songwriting will ensure a great show.

What’s more, there’s a wonderful trick to this dish that makes all the difference between blah and wow: marinated garlic and basil.

The key is to get your hands on the best tomatoes you can find, which shouldn’t pose

much of a problem this time of year. You’ll also want to select a basil plant loaded with fat leaves. If you grow your own, even better. You want two to three generous handfuls.

This meal goes perfectly with a glass of red wine or a cold beer. If you want to up the veggie factor, add diced cucumber. If you do it right, you don’t really need a side salad.

But go for it if you consider yourself the ultimate herbivore.

PUT THE BASIL leaves and garlic clove slices in a small bowl.

Cover with extra virgin olive oil (you want the garlic and basil to be all the way submerged in the oil).

Leave to marinade for up to eight hours.

Slice tomatoes in small pieces and add to a large serving bowl.

Pour basil-garlic-oil mix over the tomatoes.

Add mozzarella pieces and stir. Set aside.

Following the package directions, boil the pasta until al dente.

Drain pasta and add to the serving bowl with the other ingredients.

Toss well to soften the cheese and incorporate the ingredients.

Serve warm or at room temperature.

With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dum Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. els with bells on - an overall experience that’s hard to beat

The lobster soup came with a wine glass holding red currants immersed in riesling - it made visual sense apparently

The service deserves a word of praise – it was swift, discreet, attentive, polite and informal. For our mains, I went for the Grilled liver of Danish veal – yes, culinarily els does little globe-trotting – served with a warm salad of mushrooms, chilli buckweat, thyme and lemon (255kr). The vegetable aspect of the dish made for the biggest surprise – what a fresh and unusual symphony! It stole quite a bit of thunder from the liver, which hardly deserved bad press for being everything you want it to be. But next to the inspired dressing accentuating the mushrooms and thyme,

However you want to chalk it up, restaurant els has earned its position among Copenhagen’s classic and famous restaurants. In its own subtle way, els shaped Copenhagen history in the mid1800s by serving as a kind of hub for luminaries at The royal Danish Theatre.

Hans Christian Andersen was fond of the place and even dedicated a verse to els. In around 1900 it went from being a coffee house to a restaurant and has cultivated its own corner of the marketplace ever since. Long before anyone can remember, els was doing business. To visit now is to experience a rare glimpse of Copenhagen’s interesting past – and to be reminded that even eateries can age gracefully. els occupies an enviable address just off the Nyhavn strip with the canal visible from the window. It belongs at the pricier end of the market, but then food is not all you pay for. Take the interiors: you dine in elegance. I hear the quaint oak tables clad with blue fluted tiles would be collector’s items if anyone had any to deal. equally inimitable and one-off are the six murals done in an authentic romantic-era style, portraying fetching muses of the four seasons plus those of music and dance. If the atmosphere invites a kind of formality, it is a cosy, soothing and welcoming sort. while exchanging a few casual glances with the impressive moose head on the wall, I soon discovered much to like about the menu. It is quickly browsed over – unlike the abundantly teeming wine card – but curiously the lack of multiplicity does not give an impression of restriction. If you pass on the three-course menu (check it out online), each course comes with a choice of four to five different dishes.

Saving Danish herrings, venison and foie gras for another day, I opted for the starter of Creamy and delicious lobster soup (148kr). Slightly bewildered by the miniature wine glass holding red currants immersed in riesling and mounted in the middle of the bisque-like soup, I soon learned to appreciate the creation. visually the berries made wonderful sense, and while the watercress was tricky to manoeuvre skywards with a spoon, the taste of the Norwegian lobster made such complaints petty.

My guest’s starter was delightful: Scallops with vanilla-and-lemon sauce and fennel pickled in white wine (138kr). The scallops were juicy, perfectly fried, had a great temperature and were superbly complemented by the charismatic flavours of another eye-opener - a white wine ‘marinade’ taking fennel to a whole new level.

it felt a wee bit mundane. Not that either of us regretted our choices.

My guest stayed in the marine element with the roasted european hake served with Savoy cabbage, carrots and watercress (198kr). Again, the colours were artfully (and liberally) applied – an intriguing creation. The Savoy cabbage, ingeniously hidden in a baked purple onion, was tasty, while the hake was crispfried to pitch-perfection. All it missed were a few roast potatoes or a few bread slices of a denser and more rustic quality than the bread served.

According to a slogan-like resolution, restaurant els proposes to approach Danish produce from new angles and to readjust the lens with each passing season. The menu is liable to changes but never forgets the roots. All things considered, not least a divine medley of home-made chocolates I had for dessert, els is a restaurant that stands out among Copenhagen’s inconstant line-up of eateries and really delivers.

It tells a good story and makes you feel a part of it. It’s fair to say that the els recipe has stood the test of time for a reason. .

EDIA JUNKIES will doubtless be salivating uncontrollably over the access given to documentarist Andrew Rossi over the course of a year at the New York Times, an opportunity rarely afforded to outsiders in this traditionally fiercelyguarded world. Filmed in 2009-10, the documentary has a strikingly clinical visual style that is complimented by a series of revealingly raw and simplistically presented interviews at the newspaper, while it attempts to renegotiate its position by keeping abreast of new media developments amidst worries over future income as a hundred redundancies are made. Not only does the film offer revelatory access-all-areas glimpses of the reality of working for one of the world’s most venerable publications, but it also devotes much of its running time to exploring the paper’s future options as executive editor Bill Keller surveys a media landscape that is constantly morphing with terrifying and often bewildering rapidity.

Most immediately, a collapse in advertising revenues has already bankrupted several long-established papers and threatens the survival of many others. Michael Hirschorn’s 2009 Atlantic piece ‘End Times’ claimed the NYT would probably be among the casualties, a prospect that casts

“I’m sorry guys - due to the recent financial cuts we’ve had to introduce a new scheme called ‘chair-share’” a long shadow over everything the paper does. The nature of media consumption is also changing, with individual bloggers rivalling established news operations, and sites such as Gawker and Newser ranking stories according to popularity rather than importance. However, as NYT media columnist David Carr highlights in a memorable intervention during a debate goadingly titled ‘Good Riddance to the Mainstream Media’, much so-called new media does still derive most of its content from its older stablemates.

However, the NYT has attempted to move with the times, which it did by hiring blogging wunderkind Brian Stelter as a full-time journalist, significantly enlarging

its online presence, introducing a paywall (to the outrage of many readers), and expressing considerable interest in the iPad as a possible saviour. The paper also has two dalliances with Julian Assange’s Wikileaks, firstly in connection with a video of Iraqis massacred by US forces and then, in a far more ambitious collaboration (also involving Der Spiegel and The Guardian), editing thousands of US diplomatic cables for public consumption. Comparisons were therefore drawn with the Pentagon Papers, one of the NYT’s most famous scoops, which took 22 months from initial copying to publication in 1971, an aeon in modern media timescales.

But for all of NYT’s increasing use of

new media, Carr acts as a reminder that the best reporting will always be based on old-fashioned legwork. In many ways the film’s real star, this gravel-voiced former drug addict has reinvented himself as a tenacious journalist, fiercely loyal to his employer and pugnaciously keen to defend the paper’s virtues. While he expresses bluntly-phrased concerns to the camera about declining journalistic and ethical standards enforced by the cost-cutting Tribune Company on its newspapers, he and media desk editor Bruce Headlam make sure that his final piece on the story is scrupulously balanced - a threatened lawsuit from Tribune underscores why this is particularly important.

ICELY BALANCING the genre’s essential sexual metaphors with Disneyesque values, Craig Gillespie’s modernised take on a 25-yearold cult classic is mostly a fun experience. The director of Lars and the Real Girl demonstrates

a catchy feel for gore and subtle suggestion, and Marti Noxon’s script (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) provides all the opportunities to dazzle.

Of course, this is not for everyone. Presumably you’ll find Fright Night memorable and satisfying in exact proportion to your taste for vampire films – and the 3D effect. The plot (which faithfully recalls the original) is solid enough but seems secondary to the main reason for the handsome rating – the cast.

At their best the crew almost makes you tolerate the 3D-glasses – completely extraneous and ill-suited to a film this nocturnal.

Farrell as charismatic macho vampire, innocuously named Jerry, is of course the film’s ace

in the hole. Up until his entry about 10 minutes in, everything spells out stability and good times for our innocent focal characters in a little Las Vegas exurb. But with Jerry as the new next-door neighbour to Charlie (a popular highschool kid played

by Yelchin) and his single mother (Collette), things undeniably start to feel ominous.

Not only are Charlie’s mum and girlfriend (Imogen Poots) powerless against Jerry’s shameless, flirtatious manner (girls beware, Farrell plays it for all he’s worth!). When several classmates turn up missing, the geeky loner Ed (Mintz-Plasse, aka McLovin from Superbad) implores Charlie to help him trap the bloodsucker, if possible with the help

Rossi’s film is clearly aimed at media nerds and is an unashamed labour of love revealing his admiration and respect for the grand old ‘Grey Lady’. It does however favour formal interviews over fly-on-thewall eavesdropping, despite the latter often being far more revealing - as seen during a casual discussion about whether the paper could claim that the Iraq War was over without waiting for a formal Pentagon announcement, and ending with the realisation that this in itself is a compelling story. Nearly half a century after coining his most famous dictum, Marshall McLuhan has been increasingly proved correct: the medium often is the message.

of a self-ordained expert in dark magic – in fact a phony magician on the Vegas strip (hilariously played by Tennant).

The fight against the hot but cold-hearted (literally) vampire next door soon escalates dramatically in intensity. The curve is smooth and steep – except for a few jolts like when vampire withdrawals suddenly kick in with gratuitous CGI effects ablazing. The crew deserves credit for taking vampire lore so seriously – countless rather curious details are revealed, some amusingly updated. Thus, when Jerry has guzzled the warm blood of a Vegas stripper, what he really longs for is a cool Budweiser.

The film is fast and funny, and the leads are well suited to the roles – playing well off each other. It gently makes fun of the romcom film genre (at the start they are watching Sleepless in Seatle), although as the Daily Express rightly says: “Ultimately, it’s as conventional as the romantic-comedies it mocks.”

Friends with Benefits has played to mixed reviews, and your enjoyment of it may well come down to how much you love or hate Justin Timberlake! VS

Drive centres on Driver (Gosling), an auto mechanic by day, and a part-time Hollywood stuntman who can do nearly anything behind the wheel.

After a chance meeting with his neighbor Irene (Mulligan), sparks begin to fly. However when Irene’s husband returns from jail, Driver finds himself in a precarious situation. Refn manages to build extraordinary tension before igniting brief outbursts of violence, and the action isn’t chopped up to fool us into thinking it’s more exciting than it is. KE

Malick’s fifth film in over 40 years with derision as was the case recently at a Cannes screening. This a rare opportunity to experience pure cinema as it was intended. MW

Avoid like the Plague Cowboys and Aliens (11) Dir: Jon Favreau; 2011, 118 mins; Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford Two of the most incompatible genres combine in this film, to make it a series of mind numbing pointless plot strands. Looking more like a satirical piece on the cowboy genre, the film takes itself far too seriously. You’ll likely leave the cinema wondering how this piece of filmmaking actually made it to cinemas when it should have been trashed after the first draft. AS

Crazy, Stupid, Love (7) Dir: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa; 2011; 118 mins; Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling Steve Carell re-enacts his 40-Year-Old Virgin character in this fluffy, finely manicured romcom. Carell and Gosling make an appealing buddy couple, with Gosling especially alluring as a lithe and ruthless tomcat. Pleasure can be had watching this; however the slapstick finale feels hopelessly banal. AS

Colombiana (11) Dir: Olivier Megaton; 2011, 107 mins; Zoe Saldana, Michael Vartan, Callum Blue The film is low on plot, but high on explosions and clichés. You can’t blame the actors for the failings - they are working with a wooden script and a sometimes ludicrous story. If you’re looking for formulaic brainrot with belly laughs, you could do worse. Belonging to the ‘The Body Swap’ sub genre this film is predictable. Dave (Bateman) is a corporate lawyer with everything he could wish for while his best pal Mitch (Reynolds) is a jobbing actor who lives from hand-to-mouth and girl-to-girl.

While urinating into a magic fountain they both decide the other has a better life and voilà -they switch bodies. There are a handful of genuinely funny moments here and the leads are naturally amusing, but at two hours it’s just too long. MW

FROM THE SAME team behind acclaimed crime series The Wire, drama series Treme, which boasts a high score of 87 on Metacritic, is set in New Orleans, just three months after Hurricane Katrina, and follows the trials and tribulations of a community trying to rebuild itself.

Co-created by David Simon, the former journalist who spawned The Wire, the dialogue and characters are once again brutally authentic. Simon freely admits that much of his work is “stealing life” from his previous experiences working as a reporter.

Treme might not be to everyone’s taste – particularly if you don’t like jazz! “Some will hear its music and some won’t,” observed USA Today. “But if you do, this could be the rare TV show that makes

you dance.” Simon insists the series should only be judged as a whole.

“Treme is like Cajun food - it’s spicy, it’s weird and it’s good, but it takes a while to appreciate,” warned the New York Post.

Friday Night Dinner (SV1, Sat 21:45), on the other hand, has a simple premise. The sitcom (7.4 on imdb) follows the gathering of a British Jewish family every Friday for the commencement of the Shabbat. Already picked up by NBC to remake, this one could run forever.

Which will hopefully be the case with the children’s schedule that BBC Entertainment have finally decided to restore to their line-up, hopefully at the expense of reruns of My Hero. Perfect for early risers, the programmes will run from 04:3009:40 every day without fail.

Elsewhere, Britain’s Channel 4 in a bow to the granddaddy of reality TV have created a modern day version of The Family (DR1, Thu 22:30), which is actually quite good; Crossing Steinbeck’s America (BBC World, Sat 12:30) travels the same route as the migrants in The Grape Of Wrath to learn about the US’s deepening recession; GasLand SV2, Fri 22:45 Treme (SV1, Tue 22:00) looks at the stark future of the US energy industry; there’s another chance to watch excellent US miniseries John Adams (SV1, Wed 23:25); Heston’s Mission Impossible (TV3 Puls, Wed 20:00) sees top chef Heston Blumenthal defy the odds again; and Jonestown – The Life and Death of Peoples Temple is a harrowing doc about a cult’s mass suicide.
