WERE WE struggling for a cover story this week? Possibly! Attending the X Factor’s second round of auditions (see G8 for details) is hardly the stuff that dreams are made of. At the very least, we wanted to inform you about the first round so you could try your luck. A spokesperson for DR told me they don’t tend to go overboard with their advertising. The odd announcement here or there and social media does the rest. Which is all very well, I replied, but even if I did spend half my life twittering on, I’m hardly going to be doing it with the kind of jailbait for whom this is a monumental world event. I’m not a MP for helvede. The funny thing about X Factor is how divisive it is. You’re only allowed to love it or hate it. You can’t comment on it without half the room emptying, while the other half just stand there, glazed over, with a whimsical look on their face as they recall their first lesbian stirrings earlier

this year. You’re only allowed to gush or to flush. But what about the poor mugs who end up watching it to bond with their children and then fancy discussing it. It’s like there’s an unspoken stipulation that programmes like X Factor aren’t deserving of intelligent debate. So you take your insights to the intelligentsia and you’re instantly rebuffed. If your kids watch it, you’re a bad parent, your childless, control freak friends tell you. You have fallen in their estimation. Then again, there’s no excuse for watching the US version (see G20 for details). I did for ten minutes last Saturday and it’s the worst form of cack. Paula Abdul, who is fed the majority of her lines in advance of watching the acts, had to leave the set to pretend to vomit after a singer did exactly what he’d promised producers he’d do and exposed his thingy. The saving grace is that watching the auditions at Vega is a five-hour slog – an interminable nightmare for your children during their half term (see next week’s InOut for a guide to what’s going on) while you swan off to go luxuriating. And once they’ve been once, threaten to take them again. They’ll be putty in your hands for the rest of the holiday.

Since the premiere in 1790 it has had a tumultuous history. For reasons not unrelated to its risqué nature and views on fidelity, many of its custodians have been compelled to bowdlerise it. But people are fickle (to stay with the general theme), and the ‘composer’s cut’ version has at other times – mostly outside of the 19th and 20th century – been a whirlwind success. The Royal Danish Theatre has stayed clear of the challenging work since 2002 when Così was nearing 300 Danish performances since the theatre premiered it in 1909. The new Opera House was still being built as the last curtain fell on Così, which makes the present staging a first on the island of Holmen. “Così fan tutte is a work steeped with amazing music but difficult to bring alive on stage,” the Royal Danish Opera’s artistic director Kasper Holten observes. “Of course it’s really a comedy, but it also explores how dangerous it is to play around with love and all of love’s possible temptations. We witness four people who enter a game from which they all exit seriously bruised.” Without this latter grave and sobering twist, Così would be mere fatuous entertainment – a thing that holds no interest for Holten. Nor does it for Guy Joosten, the internationallyacclaimed Flemish stage director who already knows the ins and outs of the Opera House – he has staged Werther, Pelléas and Mélisande, and The Merry Widow here. His rendition of Così is the product of collaboration with the Antwerp-based opera company Vlaamse Opera. After a most successful run there, Così was ready to go abroad and several European cities have been glad to clear a stage for Joosten’s Mozart. Holten admits to be ‘playing it safe’ by presenting something already stamped with universal approval, but then again Così is not exactly a foolproof opera and

Performance Jeg er drømmenes labyrinth

Københavns Musikteater, Kronprinsensgade 7, Cph K; ends Sat, performances Fri 20:00, Sat 17:00; Tickets: 105165kr, under-25s 95kr; www. kobenhavnsmusikteater.dk The show Jeg er drømmenes labyrinth (I am the maze of dreams) delivers a raw look into what it means to be a ‘refugee’. Combining music, acting and dance, the show follows the story of young Afghani student Farhad, who undergoes torture during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. He’s then rescued by a young widow and together they experience a maze of dreams and nightmares. Many pf the performers are refugees themselves. EM

Hence Joosten got the job – a man who has shown he knows what he’s dealing with. “The opera is just as complicated, heartrending, irritating and fun as love can be,” he says, adding that part of its contradictory nature hinges on the paradox that even when we’re most defeated in love, we never stop yearning for it. This sounds like the kind of philosophical pickle that only the wonder of true art can transcend. Mozart’s collaborator, the librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte who also worked on Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro, is, in a great part, the brains behind the story’s idiosyncratic philosophy and baffling attraction. He and Mozart have had scholars and laymen scratch their heads over it for centuries. A hundred years ago Così was something of a connoisseur’s opera. Fifty years later specialists found that Greek myths and Italian literary classics were the key to cracking it. The title means ‘Thus do all’ – meaning ‘all women’ – and is often rendered as ‘Women are like that.’ It is safe to say that Così explores love from a male perspective. It starts with a cynical

The Bollywood Trip

The Bollywood Trip – which includes performances in Danish and English – is a dramatic love story (as if we’d expect anything different from Bollywood) at a hospital where affairs between the staff flourish. Psychiatric ward patient Harron, meanwhile, has a split personality and thinks he is one of India’s biggest Bollywood stars. The Bollywood Trip epitomises the best of east meets west - with choreography from British-Indian Gauri Sharma Tripathi, music from Danish composer Stephen Grabowski, and performers from both India and Denmark. A preview of the performance will apper in InOut in late November. EM

old philosopher, Don Alfonso (Johan Reuter), who makes a wager with two officers, Ferrando and Guglielmo (Peter Lodahl and Palle Knudsen), claiming he can prove that their girlfriends, Dorabella and Fiordiligi respectively (Elisabeth Jansson and Inger Dam-Jensen), like all women, are fickle. Alfonso’s interesting methodology involves announcing to the girls that their sweethearts have been ordered off to war and then getting each officer, now disguised as a moustachioed Albanian, to try to interest his mate’s girlfriend in a little fun. (Alfonso has, beforehand, assured the lonely girls that this is quite appropriate.) Now there’s a lot at stake for each officer: he may lose his money, his girlfriend and his faith in womankind (to adopt the logic of the play). The choir and orchestra are conducted by Daniele Callegari, a star known around the world, while the solo performers are Copenhagen’s own. Holten doesn’t doubt the constellation. “Judging by the incredible vocal level only, I believe this could be one of the most soughtafter productions of the season,” she says.

Are we really champions of anti-corruption, or is it just something we think we are? Dancers from Russia, Australia, USA, Finland and Bulgaria have come together to present an ultra-physical performance on the theme ‘corruption’. The show is part of ‘Kick Backs - a festival of corruption’, focusing on issues such as nepotism, abuse of power, lobbying and whistle blowing. Running from 6-21 October, workshops will also be held, focusing on a new issue each week. The topics covered include the Danish political system, corruption in the private sector, and how corruption in Demark compares to other nations. A review of the performance will apper in InOut later this month. EM

He liked happy endings, but since this story was not actually his own, he did not have a choice thank god for that! Because it is the most heartbreakingly beautiful story you will ever see. Along with Flemming Flindt’sThe Lesson, these two ballets are among the most important works in the Royal Danish Ballet repertoire, so if you feel like the backbone of your ballet knowledge is wobbly, this is the perfect double bill to fill in those missing parts. THIS YEAR’S FAIR is the ideal outing for all women, be it with girlfriends, mothers or daughters, or even with the mother’s group. The fair is being heralded as the ‘must attend’ event for every woman who wants to pamper herself. With a direct focus on the life of a contemporary woman, the event will embrace a bit of everything: from fun to serious, home to nightlife, single women to those in relationships, beauty to health, and from body to soul. With four dedicated stage areas and a range of events, workshops, lectures and demonstrations, there is bound to be something to suit all tastes. On the ‘stage show’ there are music features, with acts from contemporary artists as well as fashion shows, lectures and musicals. Meanwhile the ‘café stage’ on the balcony is the place to go and enjoy small lectures and debates in a cosy café environment. In the ‘demo kitchen’ there

is an open kitchen with large screens where the audience can enjoy the culinary exploits of famous chefs - a great place to indulge a hobby or learn a new one! The final stage is the ‘lounge area’ where the remainder of the lectures, workshops and coaching sessions are being held. The opening day is jampacked with events to enjoy. Amongst them are highlights such as a talk by crime writer and former police director Hanne Bech Hansen at 1pm on the café stage, and ‘Easy and natural everyday make-up in three minutes’, a presentation by make-up artist Marianne Escentric at 4pm. In the demo kitchen Marie Melchior will be presenting a show at 1pm about how to cook a party menu that is neither difficult nor expensive. Meanwhile at 2pm on the lounge stage there will be a lecture, ‘Woman – Know your retirement’, which is designed to demonstrate how to retire without giving up the luxuries of life. The programme only heats up on Saturday as Emilia van Hauen, a sociologist, presents a lecture at 1:30pm on the café stage about how to become happier, sexier and more powerful in a cool way. For fashion lovers there is a fashion show by Nystrup & Øskov at 12:30pm, while at 3:30pm in the demo

kitchen Portuguese chef Luis Guerreiro will demonstrate recipes prepared using a ‘Cataplana’, a modern Portuguese wok. This event will be conducted in English. Moving away from fashion and food there will be a lecture at 3:30pm on the lounge stage about ‘Women and the economy’. Whilst the economy can seem daunting, this workshop promises that afterwards everyone will at least understand their personal finances, as well as how to manage a family and money. While the fair is drawing to an end on Sunday, the events and lectures just keep on coming. On the café stage, the sexologist and author of living in an open relationship, Sara Skaarup, will be interviewed by FEMINA journalist Tine Bendixen at 4:30pm, whilst at 2:00pm there will be a ‘Love me tonight’ mini concert with great ‘80s songs. At 2:30pm, in the demo kitchen, Johan Bülow will be showing that liquorice is more than just a taste, as it can also be incorporated into cooking. For those that enjoy hiking or those who can’t understand why people do it, there is a lecture on the lounge stage by Ann Bjerre, who will be talking about what makes modern people go hiking. The lecture is based on the book ‘The hike The pilgrimage trail’.

Sex, death, and jealousy permeate this stripped-down, but highly moving presentation of Puccini’s classic opera. The set design by Karin Betz and lighting design by Jesper Kongshaug capture the dark atmosphere of Tosca. Each of the three acts features colour-co-ordinated lighting, with deep reds or dark blues bathing the stage to match the emotional musical cues of the orchestra and opera singers. BF

Gamle Scene, Kongens Nytorv, 1055 Cph K; ends Oct 15; performances at 20:00 on Mon, Thu, Oct 15; tickets 95– 595kr; 45-min intro before every performance in the balcony foyer; www.kglteater.dk This triple bill takes the audience from 19th century choreographer August Bournonville via George Balanchine to a 20th century piece by Harald Lander. Bournonville Fantasy is a study of the choreographer’s technique and his exercises, which are still part of the daily training regime at the Royal Danish Ballet. Expect elaborate footwork made up of many quick steps and a lively expression. Balanchine’s salute to the Danish style is noticeable in his Donizetti Variations, which ballerina Suzanne Farrell called “fast, lighthearted and technically demanding”, and is set to music from the opera Don Sebastian by Gaetano Donizetti. And finally, Lander’s Etudes , which the Royal Ballet’s director Nicolaj JHubbe describes as Danish ballet’s equivalent of the national anthem, is a one-act ballet that begins with exercises at the barre (the handrail used during warm-up exercises) and develops into extensive bravura steps with which the dancers take over the whole stage. Clausens Kunsthandel, Toldbodgade 9, Cph K; starts Oct 1, ends Oct 29; open Tue-Sat 11:00-17:00; www. clausenskunsthandel.dk Danish artist Knud Odde, recently returned from an artist residency, presents a collection of paintings and collages. Odde stayed near the Italian city of Amalfi at a former Benedictine monastery. The area proved inspiring both in atmosphere and material availability - many of his collages are made with brightly coloured paper scraps from the streets of Amalfi. Through layering paint and found paper, Odde creates graphic figures, bordering on religious icons, appropriate for art work made in a former monastery. BF

Dimensions of Hyper-reality

It was a European avant garde art movement in the late 1940s and early 1950s whose members lived in those cities. Paul Klee, a Swiss artist active in the early part of the 20th century, is known for his colourful childlike paintings. Though he was not a member of COBRA, the exhibition presents his paintings along with works from COBRA artists like Asger Jorn and Karl Appel. Bringing together the artist and the avant-garde movement creates strange associations and insight into artists from different periods working to change the art world of their time. BF

Frandsen, part of the ‘wild painter’ movement from the 1980s in Denmark. Primarily a painter, Frandsen has been exploring new mediums and experimenting with large-scale installations in the past decade. He often paints on to photographs and mixes drawings with paintings. Frandsen finds inspiration in his family, sexuality, and flowers. BF

Gallery B15, Islands Brygge 15, Cph S; Starts Oct 7, ends Nov 9; open Wed-Fri 12:00-18:00, Sat 12:0015:00; www.galleryb15.dk Two US-based painters present new work in Dimensions of Hyper-reality. Ricky Allman paints stripped-down post-apocalyptic scenes. Splashes of bright colour highlight the otherwise stark images. Allman’s paintings reference landscape painting, but with a dash of science fiction. Mark Schoening uses a similar colour palette in his painting – stark backgrounds with splatters of neon. Schoening’s work is more abstract in style, exploding over the canvas. Schoening is at his best when he moves away from the canvas and onto the wall for large-scale, abstract wall paintings and sculptural installations. BF

Entwined: Passages, Geometry, and Psyche

Her style is minimalist, with clean lines and few colours. She is inspired by art history and literature. Here she presents her new sculpture ‘Vessel, 2001’, along with a series of photographs in a solo exhibition. Shakespeare’s Ophelia from Hamlet inspired the work for this exhibition. References to the sculptural work of celebrated artist Louise Bourgeois, plus strong geometrical shapes, can also be seen in Kalaku’s work. BF

Her paintings seem split between dream and reality. Farcas paints melancholy portraits of people, both real and fictionalised. Romania fairy tales and family snap shots inspire her equally. Her blurry paintings feel like fleeting memories. Farcas’s style is indebted to that of the German painter, Gerhard Richter. This is her second solo exhibition with LARMgalleri. BF

Blue Notes

Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, Flæsketorvet 85, Cph V; ends Oct 8; open Tue-Fri 13:00–18:00; Sat, 12:00–16:00; www.bjerggaard.com Danish photographer Erik Steffensen’s new collection of his signature expressionistic images. The title refers to the blue note a musical term for a note played at a lower pitch and held out longer, typically in jazz, rock or blues music. Inspired by popular culture, like David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, and art history alike, Steffensen’ s photographs are a mix of film and painting references blended into dream-like images. BF

Subtopian & Jesus Christ Get Off My Back

Alright Alright & Big Bubble

Malmö Konsthall, Johannesgatan 7, Malmö; ends Nov 27; open daily 11:00-17:00; www.konsthal.malmo.se In Alright Alright, Chris Johanson - a self-taught artist from the US heavily influenced by Californian skateboarding and graffiti culture, - creates his work from recycled paint and second-hand materials. Japanese artist Misaki Kawai, the creator of Big Bubble, works in a simple, manga comic book drawing-style making graphic paintings, drawings, and artists’ books. BF

Tunnel of Fear

Ahmet Cevdet Bey: Tunnel of Fear focuses on a strange, new collaboration in which two Turkish artists have merged identities to become a fictional character: mad scientist Ahmet Cevdet Bey. This strange relationship is played out in a ‘chamber of horrors’ style installation about the fictional character and his work. BF

Experimental artists and art movements, like the Fluxus movement of the 1960s, inspired the images. They are somewhat obscure in nature and feature the artist in strange situations, such as digging a useless hole in the ground or hiding beneath a paving stone. The result is a comical and surreal body of photographs. Gudmundsson also works in painting, sculpture, performance, and installation, and viewers can see elements of his work in other media in his photography. BF

Fresh from releasing their latest album, the group are embarking on yet another tour that’s taking them further than they’ve ever been before. As their profile grows, their touring destinations expand, and this week they hit Copenhagen, ready to rock the city in their very understated way. Despite their name, Architecture in Helsinki are actually an Australian act, hailing originally from Albury in New South Wales. Formed in 1999 out of the remnants of a funkgrunge outfit, the three original members – lead singer Cameron Bird, Jamie Mildren and Sam Perry – soon moved to Melbourne and within a year had attracted drummer James Cecil and

vocalist and clarinet player, Kellie Sutherland. After rearranging cut pieces of newspaper into a series of random phrases, the band settled on their name and in 2000 Architecture in Helsinki was born. It would take more than two years before the group released their first album. Fingers Crossed was released to little fanfare in 2003 after the group signed with independent record label, Trifekta. Largely over-looked by mainstream radio, the album was impressive due to its wide range of musical styles and influences, showcasing the band’s many talents. Released in the United States in April 2004, the record secured the band a host of solid supporting acts thanks in part to their involvement with the Bar/None Records label. In 2005 the band released their second album, In Case We Die.. Featuring more complex production, the record was played heavily on local radio stations, earning them several nomi-

nations in Australia’s ARIA music awards. Their next record entitled, We Died, They Remixed, was a remix album and released while the band underwent significant line-up changes. Two of the original members left the group, leading to a number of collaborations with prominent artists, including Hot Chip and New Buffalo. Part of what makes this band so special is their ability to sound old-fashioned and futuristic at the same time. Combining the best of classic pop with experimental new sounds created by a plethora of instruments, Architecture in Helsinki would be the perfect music to play in a moon base elevator. Featuring quirky instruments – including analogue synthesisers, samplers, the glockenspiel and handclaps – as well as concert instruments such as the trumpet, tuba, trombone and saxophone, each song is multi-layered, verging off into unexpected directions. The fact they can blend these instruments so seamlessly is owed, in part, to the fact

that each member of the group plays more than one instrument – a talent that is put to particularly good use during their live shows. This year the band released their fourth full length album Moment Bends. Displaying their supreme versatility, the album switches between vocalists and it’s easy to think that you are listening to a different band from one track to the next. Light, airy, fun and overwhelmingly positive, the album is a refreshing take on the pop rock genre, with the band’s use of electronic influences allowing them to stand out from the crowd. What you’ll get from this show is a multifaceted performance that’s bound to leave a smile on your face. ANDY RUGG

S I ARRIVED at Vega on a sultry September evening, my ears were greeted by the sound of particularly beautiful vocals, soaring and unadulterated. Opening act Penny Police commanded their audience with a fine performance. However, despite employing a staggering variety of instruments onstage – including theremin and an auto harp – they failed to create sonic textures thick enough for my ears and the song structure appeared a little disjointed. That said, the technically adept performance combined with the strength of the astoundingly pure vocals, countered my misgivings and left me all warm and fuzzy inside. After a brief interlude, Guillemots sauntered on stage. It may have in fact been a bit too brief as the rhythm section seemed a little

Loppen; 21:00; 100 kr The youngest daughter of legendary folksinger Arlo Guthrie and the granddaughter of Bob Dylan’s idol, Woody Guthrie, Sarah Lee is carrying on the family folk-tradition together with her husband, Johnny Irion. A combination of blues, country and folk elements, the duo’s authentic acoustic sets tap into the very roots that kickstarted the modern folk movement. Considered as part of the folk-music canon - alongside modern greats such as Willie Nelson, Peter Seeger, Ray LaMontagne, Neil Young and Joan Baez - this is a must for any folk-aficionado. Mojo Bar; 22:00, 70 kr Native to Copenhagen, lead singer and guitarist Jake Green is giving Copenhagen’s booming blues circuit a whirl with his ambitious compilation of traditional blues numbers. However, Green and his band may be enthusiastic, but they hardly break the backbone of traditional blues rhythms and fail, in many ways, to coin something refreshing and original. Sure, it’s hardly likely that they’ll be selling out stadiums any time soon, but the group do stick to the very foundations of what made blues such a popular genre - walking bass-lines, weathered vocals and easy-listening rhythms - and if you’re nearby they may be worth a listen. Loppen, 21:00; 120 kr Hailing from Montreal, the husband-and-wife pair - Wolf Parade lead-singer Dan Boekner, and Alexei Perry - have given way to a musical offspring that essentially amounts to a clashing of Wolf Parade’s atmospheric elements with spiky sound loops, high-octane drum machines and a heavy onus on Boekner’s atmospheric vocals. It’s pretty much the best bits of Wolf Parade re-marketed for the dance-floor, complete with all the bells and whistles. Now a global phenomenon - with their third studio-album, Sound Kapital (2011) on the receiving end of positive reviews from the big ‘uns - the duo are one of the highlights this week. (English) DvdN

Going back to school ANOTHER WEEK off with the kids is sneaking up on us this upcoming autumn mid-term break. What to do with the jumpy youngsters is probably occupying the minds of countless parents at the moment. Should you go away for the whole week, just a long weekend, or stay home and pursue different activities? The options are many. One thing to explore could be the Danish ‘højskole’ tradition. A højskole is an optional, flexible residential high school. It is sort of a boarding school where grown-ups can sign up voluntarily to attend courses in practically any subject – but mostly creative, art, literature and sports-related courses. It can be anything from theatre, to horse riding, dance, music singing, pottery and so on. The duration of the courses vary from a week or two (summer courses) to four or five months. Short courses are typically also offered during short holidays. The schools themselves tend to be isolated and close to nature and in that way offer a good environment for immersing yourself in whatever activity you choose to explore. The courses are an excellent chance for you to try out something that you have perhaps wanted to try for a while, but have not had the chance to explore yet. It is also an opportunity to learn more about Denmark and the Danes, as well as to practice your Danish. Family courses are designed with common activities for adults and children, or separate course work for

THERE ARE THOSE moments in life when we wish we could be transported back to another era, a classier one, where men wore suits and women wore heels. There are also those times when we want to experience something on the cutting edge - something forward thinking and out of the ordinary. Stumbling upon Ruby Cocktail Bar I found myself in between two worlds: adorned like a stately homestead meets 1930s jazz bar, the cocktails are modern takes on old classics, with a seasonal list that changes every three months. Ruby has been on the Copenhagen cocktail scene for four years now, the product of a Danish/Scottish couple who longed for a great cocktail bar with extraordinary drinks. The moment you walk through the door, you’re enthusiastically welcomed by three energetic and passionate bartenders. This immediately upped my opinion of the place, as great customer service can be a rare experience in Denmark. Furthermore, when you see bartenders having a great time, shaking themselves around as much as they do the cocktails, you know you’re in for a good time. Hospitality 101: happy staff = happy customers. After strong recommendations to try the seasonal cocktails, which made use of autumn fruits such as apples and plums, we did. The ‘Dutch Clover’, a new twist on the traditional ‘Dutch Courage’, had a polite blend of syrupy, bitter and tart flavours with a kick of malt. Start proceedings with the lethal ‘Remember the Rain’ and you’ll remember little else

If you’re up for a stiff kick indulge in ‘Remember the Rain’, a spicy and boozy mix designed to bring a little warmth back to your body. It contains Banks 5 Island rum, Noilly Prat dry vermouth, crème de cassis and Paychaud’s bitters. Good idea to start with this one if you’re planning to drink a few as it will really hit you hard … something you may not be prepared for if you’re soaked in spirits already. Never shy to educate their guests about the mixology of great cocktails, one of the bartenders let me in on his secret. “It’s simply down to using ingredients you would drink on their own and making the juices and syrups yourself.” If you only try one cocktail here please let it be the ‘Ruby Daiquiri’. This is the bar’s most popular drink, having never been let off the menu in its fouryear history. Composed of rhubarb jam and vanilla syrup - both homemade - it

You’ll be taken through the history of the beer visiting the brewery’s stables - where the mighty Jutland dray horses are kept - and Carl Jacobsen’s private sculpture garden, which holds a version of the little mermaid statue from 1937. The tour has no time-limit and you’re given free rein to explore every aspect of the centre. Included in the price are vouchers for two beers or soft drinks. JHW

has a rich but natural sweetness unlike some daiquiris where the sugar is heaped in. The ‘Black and Blue Margarita’ is also an enchanting treat for the tongue with a fusion of fresh blackberries and liquoriceinfused tequila. The crowd that frequents the place look like a bunch of Mads Mikkelsens in suits. The crème of the Scandinavian crop – looks-wise as well as wallet-wise - call Ruby their ‘local’, but that’s not to say that the average pleb can’t find a place here too. If you’re timely enough you may find yourself rubbing shoulders with James Bond aka Pierce Brosnan, who dropped by here on his last visit for none other than a dry martini … shaken not stirred. Interestingly enough he sent it back saying it was “too wet”. So follow in Bond’s footprints and take a swagger down to Ruby to indulge in some ‘classic drinking with forward thinking’.

THE WEIRDEST way I ever ate an apple was in a Vietnamese restaurant in London. There they gave me a Granny Smith with salt. It was nice compared to how I thought it would be, but I haven’t eaten it since. I’ve eaten lots of apples though, and think the best way to use them is by turning them into juice. Now is the time to do that because they’re in season. All you’ll need is a juicer and the will to clean it afterwards. I use one kind of apple to make each batch of juice and end up with different tasting apple juices. Some are sweet, some are sour, some

The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC

And instead of buying them from Irma you could visit a farm nearby and pick your own (find out more at www. plukselvfrugt.dk/aebler). Once you’ve made juice you can advance a stage and use it as a base for smoothies. My favorite is one with banana, fresh apple juice and frozen raspberries. Or skip the banana if the apples are sweet. You can also make apple cake, of course. This recipe is full of butter and sugar, and my grandmother who’s almost 90 said it was the best apple cake she’d ever tried. $ $ $

Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were too highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a ‘best ever veal experience) and the chocolate cake (‘Oh My God’), whih was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that they don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that they can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. Apple cake

For the cake: 200 grams of sugar 200 grams of room-tempered butter 4 eggs 110 grams flour 1.5 tablespoon of baking powder And for the topping: 3 apples cinnamon sugar chopped almonds Here’s how to do it. It’s very, very simple, especially with a kitchen aid. Turn on the oven to 180 degrees. Whisk eggs and sugar until it’s white and a little fluffy. Add the eggs and stir until it’s smooth. Add the flour and baking powder, and make it smooth again. Slice the apples and place them in circles like your grandmother would. Add sugar, cinnamon and chopped almonds. Bake it for 35-40 minutes until you think it’s done or decide it to be. Serve it with all kinds of creams: ice, whipped or fresh. If you think it’s a success you can try it with pears. They’ll make it sweeter, so skip the cinnamon and use less sugar. And use pecans instead of almonds. Or use almonds if you don’t have any pecans. One last thing to try is just the apple, freshly picked, sun ripened and much nicer than the ones we get during winter.

Sometimes a meal can feel like an eternity, but here the time passed by quickly and pleasurably as we enjoyed a feast for both our eyes and our very satisfied stomachs. With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dum Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. It’s a haven for meat lovers and is popular among its clientele for the meaty mixed grill. AJ

Pubs The Irish Rover Strøget 46, 1161 Cph K; Open daily 10:00-late; www. irishrover.dk You won’t find a more childfriendly pub in the whole city. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, upstairs there’s a new lounge area - the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. Each dish can be easily matched by one of Brew Pub’s own concoctions from the casks across the courtyard. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, a private function the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. delicately flavoured vanilla ice-cream. Delicious! The final dish was black liquorish ice cream with compressed plums. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of liquorish, so this wouldn’t have been something I’d have chosen myself, but for a fan of liquorish, this was doubtless a perfect example of the sweet. I ENTERED the hotel with a completely open mind. I didn’t know anyone who had eaten at the hotel, and (rather shamefully) hadn’t even read the August hotel review we ran in our own paper! For others in the dark, it is Scandinavia’s largest hotel. It has a whopping 23 floors, and 812 ‘designer’ bedrooms. Despite the high number of guests they can accommodate, they pride themselves on being able to offer a “quality experience with a sense for the individual guests’ needs”. So, could they oblige my personal culinary preferences? The interior of the restaurant is very modern and certainly fulfils the hotel’s aspirations by marketing itself as a design hotel. The chairs were, of course, by the Danish designer Hans Wegner: the so-called ‘Y-chairs’ - this time with a modern twist - painted lime green. The guests have the choice of sitting in an open area, able to enjoy the feeling of eating with other diners, or they can choose one of the more private tables, set in semi-circular booths. Out in a group to celebrate a birthday or on an intimate date with your loved one? In terms of seating, the hotel really does cater for individual tastes. So, what about the food? We were given one of the set menus, which included a glass of wine especially selected to complement each course. You can choose how many courses you would like, ranging from three courses (395kr/690kr with wine) up to seven courses (795kr/1,490kr with wine). We started with scallops, which were absolutely delicious. Surely that course couldn’t be beaten, we thought. How wrong we were! Next up was lobster, which was excellent, followed by North-sea cod with artichokes, fresh hazelnuts and tarragon, which was simply exquisite. The cod tasted so fresh, and the flavours surrounding it were perfect. This was, quite honestly, one of the best fish dishes I have tasted in my life. The main course was venison, served with cherries. The meat was cooked to perfection and mixed wonderfully with the sweetness of the cherries. “This is high quality meat,” my husband commented. Praise indeed from someone who grew up on a farm in Jutland and who still hunts as a hobby! Next up were the desserts. First were conference pears served with marzipan, pear juice and oh-so

vided with such a wide range of tastes and flavours: an experience not to be missed. If it’s a special occasion and if your budget stretches that far, I would also recommend selecting the set wine menu. You have decided to pay the price for such fantastic food, and it’s at its best when accompanied by the wine it deserves. Rather coincidentally, we were eating just next to the pop group Aqua! I even embarrassed my husband by going up to them and telling them I worked for The Copenhagen Post.

They were extremely friendly and chatty, and Lene (the Barbie girl) said that she imagined it would be difficult to learn Danish here, as all Danes want to practice their English. Hey, has she been reading my last community column?! But, even though I’m overly impressed by famous people and a very famous Danish super-group was there, the real star of the evening was still the food. BDUCTION is a fast and furious ride in which violent things will happen whether the plot has prepared for them or not. Realism and filmic integrity are sacrificed for the obligatory and predictable Hollywood-isms and, frankly, with the tiniest bit of critical sense you might want to pass on it. It’s the kind of sexually-propelled teenage flick in which, from time to time, we’re treated to a fetishistically zoomed-in eyeful of the airbrushed maverick flexing his jaw muscles (the character of Nathan is played by Lautner, ‘the other’ Twilight hunk). The kind of film in which, when the hero is most lethally hunted and hasn’t had a meal since his house blew up, he finds a supercharged BMW and a badass leather jacket, lest we forget what kind of guy they are messing with. I suppose the director knows the importance of hooking his audience good and early. For around 20 minutes at the beginning of the film, Singleton (Boyz n the Hood, Poetic Justice) does his damnedst to bond with the audience over the joys of being 17, pampered, and reckless. When Nathan, after a wild party, returns hungover to his folks (Jason Isaacs, Maria Bello) he is immediately grounded.

“Quick, we need to show the director the new ‘pouting’ look I’ve mastered” Much as he longs to get out of the house, he doesn’t expect his curfew to be broken by two assassins and a bomb hidden in the oven. Nathan has long doubted the stability and reliability of his life. He feels decidedly ‘different’ from his parents and, as he tells his shrink (Weaver), is troubled by recurrent nightmares. A dramatic flashback suggests that his mind is grappling with a violent home-invasion many years before. “Has somebody died?”we wonder. “But who cares?” Then one day, while working on a sociology project with Karen (Collins, 90210), the cute girl from across

the street, Nathan discovers his baby picture on a missing children’s website. One ill-advised phone call later and he finds himself in a sinister web of corruption and hitmen. Not one but two shady parties, involving a Russian terrorist (played unremarkably by Nyquist - Mikael Blomkvist in the Millennium trilogy) and a corrupt CIA agent (Molina), want to lay hands on Nathan in order to wrest a coded list of names from his biological father. The film proper is one big chase with stunts and action galore, though Nathan and Karen aren’t too freaked out to call it “One hell of a first date”.

Nathan seems to heed the pithy advice he barely has time to receive while dodging thugs left and right: “There’ll be time for you to deal emotionally with all this, but right now you’ve got to get your shit together.” It’s the kind of film you have to be in the mood for. You have to decide, like Singleton, that the monotony of a successful escape down the highway is greatly improved by adding, to Lenny Kravitz’s singing, the noise of a hundred Formula One cars - for instance. Abduction is a powerful reminder of the genre’s virtually inexhaustible appeal. Several fixtures of recent years

seem to have informed it, not least The Bourne Identity, and Abduction has its moments, not least a rather effective train sequence that reminds us of the genre we all loved before it became joined at the hip with cuttingedge gadgetry. So who is it for? The formula of having a grim subtext frequently eclipsed by scenes of animal magnetism may be suitable for couples out on a date. I’m not knocking lowbrow entertainment here. But we need to call a spade a spade and agree what kinds of water run deep. Abduction is frenzied and flashy and, not surprisingly, pretty shallow.

OT KNOWING whether to take itself seriously or be goofball Bean funny, Johnny English Reborn hovers in the dreaded middle ground of comic purgatory … Mr Bean, whoops I mean Rowan Atkinson, is back on

the big screen bringing unsuper spy Johnny English back with him in a new comedy from Oliver Parker. The latest in a long, long line of Bond parodies, Johnny English Reborn sees Johnny English in a Tibet monastery trying to forget his embarrassing debacle in Mozambique. His superiors in MI7 including Anderson in the Judy Dench role, have all but forgotten about him until a job comes up that only he can do, so he is reluctantly summoned back to the ministry. He is assisted by current Agent One (West), Agent Tucker (Kaluuya), a young man with ambitions to become a serious agent, and Kate (Pike), the behaviour special-

ist and English’s potential love interest. Johnny uses this help to bumble, stumble, face contort and take kicks to the family jewels as he winds his way from scene to scene until the big finish. The film is at its best when it uses Atkinson’s (and by extension English’s) age. The comedic theme of getting wiser as one gets older allows our hero to occasionally downplay some scenes to terrific effect. However, these scenes are few and far between as Parker and Atkinson use every comedy trick in Atkinson’s diverse arsenal in this film - rubber-faced Beanisms, gross stupidity, slapstick, word plays, farce and diverse physical oddities. So in other

words, they try to find something for everyone and in the process kind of lose their way. The rest of the casting is actually pretty sharp with Pike (an actual former Bond girl) and newcomer Kaluuya rising to the top despite the poor direction of Parker who has shown that he really should avoid comedies and stick to his serious period pieces (Othello, The Importance of Being Earnest). Bottom line: It has some LOL moments and fans of Atkinson will still probably love this movie, though there is less Bean and more Blackadder this time around. You could do worse. KEVIN EVANCIO

Drive centres on Driver (Gosling), an auto mechanic by day, and a part-time Hollywood stuntman who can do nearly anything behind the wheel. After a chance meeting with his neighbor Irene (Mulligan), sparks begin to fly. However when Irene’s husband returns from jail, Driver finds himself in a precarious situation. Refn manages to build extraordinary tension before igniting brief outbursts of violence, and the action isn’t chopped up to fool us into thinking it’s more exciting than it is. KE

One Day (7) Dir: Lone Scherfig; UK/US drama, 2011,107 min; Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Patricia Clarkson Each one of us could probably point to an event in the past of which the consequences have literally dictated who and where we are today. ‘One Day’ is a meditation on this theme with a bit more in the mix. Despite being an engaging portrayal of 20 years of contemporary British experience, ‘One Day’ is also a saturated love story about the lives of two friends – Emma (Hathaway) and Dexter (Sturgess). The film revisits the two friends’ vastly different lives at

more or less significant junctures, on every St Swithin’s Day. The nicely interwoven themes, the sure-footed cinematography, and the generally believable acting have the film living up to its own ambitious intentions, delivering an emotional punch in the gut. KG

He and Gosling make an appealing buddy couple, with Gosling alluring as a lithe and ruthless tomcat. Pleasure can be had watching this; however the slapstick finale feels hopelessly banal. AS

Dir: David Yates; 2011, 130 mins; Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint The Harry Potter finale ended an era last July. Cinematic magic follows our heroic threesome, and with a litany of impossible foes and an action-packed battle sequence finale, it’s one of the better HP films. SS

Avoid like the Plague Cowboys and Aliens (11) Dir: Jon Favreau; 2011, 118 mins; Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford Two of the most incompatible genres combine in this film, to make it a series of mind numbing pointless plot strands. Belonging to the ‘The Body Swap’ sub genre this film is predictable. There are a handful of genuinely funny moments here and the leads are naturally amusing, but at two hours it’s just too long. MW

Set on the Welsh seaside, this gently stirring coming of age film is darkly funny and intriguing. However don’t expect a catchy pace - the film gently saunters along much like a submarine with a little too much fluff in some spots. KE

Bobby Fischer Against the World (11) Dir: Liz Garbus; 2011; 93 min Bobby Fischer, Regina Fischer Bobby Fischer reassuringly reminds us that the price of success is one that most would not wish to pay. This is a poignant and unsettling film, but Garbus provides no revelations for anyone who has followed Fischer’s story. AS

Filmed over the course of a year at the paper, the documentary reveals the reality of working for one of the world’s most venerable publications, amidst worries over future income. Rossi’s revealingly raw and simplistically presented interviews delve into the paper’s attempts to renegotiate its position, by keeping abreast of new media developments. Clearly aimed at media nerds, the film is an unashamed labour of love revealing Rossi’s admiration and respect for the grand old ‘Grey Lady’. AS

Midnight in Paris (3) Dir: Woody Allen; UK/ France com, 2011, 94 mins; Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams Premiered August 11 Despite the promising trailer, a sinking disappointment accompanies the realisation that this is going to be one of Woody’s daffier works. MW

Friends with Benefits (3) Dir: Will Gluck; 2011; 109 mins; Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, Woody Harrelson, Richard Jenkins Friends with Benefits is a comedy that tells the story of two friends, Dylan (Timberlake) and Jamie (Kunis), who attempt to add sex to their relationship without the complicated extras love and commitment. The film is fast and funny, but ultimately predictable. Your enjoyment of it may well come down to how much you love or hate Justin Timberlake! VS

Captain America: The First Avenger (15) Dir: Joe Johnston; US action, 2011, 124 mins; Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving Steve Rogers is the small scrawny kid with more ailments than ligaments - the perfect candidate to be turned into a perfect physical specimen. While Johnston doesn’t wow us with anything new this time around, at least he has put together a film worth seeing. KE

Because surely that’s the only feasible explanation as to how DR HD has managed to secure the rights to the brand new US version fronted by Simon Cowell. Let’s just hope they haven’t blown a good chunk of the licence fee on this drivel. Still, you need to know it’s on – if only because you’re aimlessly channelhopping, see a man exposing his plonker to Paul Abdul and wonder if you’ve accidentally tuned into Ramasjang by mistake. Staying with HD, have you noticed how it’s started going all Bohemian Rhapsody on us and called itself ‘Mama’. Check it out on Saturday afternoon and you’ll see it’s got a whole load of new reality shows (aimed at the mamas

while the papas are watching the footy), the pick of which is Work of Art (DR HD, Wed 19:15, repeated Sat 13:00), which is like Project Runway, but with art instead of fashion. Elsewhere, we’re embarrassed to say that we can’t figure out the name of the four-part US 2010 documentary series on the drug trade (SV2, Mon-Thu 18:00), but it looks promising; Dancing with the Stars (BBC Entertainment, Sunday 18:00) is back for an eighth series (beats me why the Beeb show some other country’s version when the original is still going strong in the UK) with celebrities including Lil’ Kim, SteveO, Denise Richards and Belinda Carlisle; there’s another chance to see the 2006 BBC version of Jane
