Various venues across Greater Cph; this weekend SKELETONS and witches and ghosts! Oh my! Halloween is upon us and full of opportunities to indulge your imagination and your sweet tooth, despite the fact that the holiday is typically not celebrated in Denmark. During the Danish-Norwegian holiday reform of 1770, a number of holidays were abolished – including Halloween in co-ordination with All Saints Day. In recent times, the festivities have been undergoing a reinvention, with a distinct US flavour. And for those craving a good trick or treat or simply wanting to spice up their dull autumn days, many Copenhagen venues are offering a handful of delightfully frightful events.

BEN HAMILTON
I WAS STUMBLING around the internet on Saturday and a link led me to a story by Ekstra Bladet that Hannibal Gadaffi had been killed in Libya in the same town as his father. I was surprised as I always had him down as a bit of a Flashman – his record for fighting his wife and kicking servants is well documented – so I would have presumed that just like the Victorian antihero, he would have fled the country on a stolen horse, or beneath a lady’s petticoat. Besides, media reported that he’d scarpered to Algeria weeks ago so I was curious to find out more. My impression of Hannibal is based on meeting him in person: I taught him English on several occasions in late 2004, along with his two bodyguards, one of whom turned up to class covered in mysterious wounds – it was the last we saw of him. I can only hope the basic English I taught him helped him negotiate with Nato during the revolution, but then again, he was hopeless and it probably led to the wrong village being bombed.
The three of them broke a world record during Ramadan by failing to turn up to class 15 days in a row. It was all very high maintenance and diplomatic. Nevertheless, when I got a chance to teach the son I didn’t stand by protocol. Within five minutes I established he spent more time in nightclubs than business school, and that he thought you “snored” cocaine. We then went on to play out certain scenarios, mostly in the ladies toilets. I won’t pretend I didn’t enjoy it, sitting there in the same room as the son of an absolute ruler. The adrenalin was pumping, like there was an added pressure not to mention his father (or Lockerbie!), while I was secretly praying the material would throw up some family scenarios to practice. Anyhow, it only took me a second to realise it wasn’t his corpse - it wouldn’t be unlike Flashman to fake his own death - and actually his brother’s. And his brother’s name on the newswires, which makes EB’s story all the more bizarre. Still, you’d think they’d take it down from their internet site. Unless, of course, this has all been a case of wishful thinking by a newspaper he took libel action against in 2008, and lost. This time he might have a stronger case. Talking of which, did you hear that Jar Jar Binks is dead. Yeah, this wishful thinking might catch on.

28 October - 3 November Like to be in America?
WHILE JEROME Robbins (1918-98) is best known for West Side Story - it all sprung from an idea he had in 1949 the prolific choreographer also created famous musicals, especially from the 1940s until the 1960s during which he simultaneously worked on a large number of ballet productions for the most renowned dance companies in America and the rest of the world. The quadruple bill Broadway for an Evening pays tribute to Robbins’ choreographic breadth. Dancers from the Royal Danish Ballet perform pieces that range from his humorous The Concert, the classical Other Dances and creepy The Cage to the energetic West Side Story Suite. Robbins set West Side Story
to dance in 1957 on Broadway and four years later won two Oscars for co-directing and choreographing the film version. Many of his other musicals, such as The King and I, Peter Pan, Gipsy and Fiddler on the Roof - all of which he choreographed and/or directed - were later turned into films. Robbins had originally joined the New York City Ballet as a dancer in 1949. He quickly began to choreograph for the company and would continue to do so, on and off, until his death. In the 1980s he headed NYCB together with its current Danish artistic director, Peter Martins. Robbins’ choreographies were to expand the range of movement acceptable in a ‘serious’ ballet: he took elements from musicals and jazz dance, and relied on the musical score when choreographing his ballet works. At a time when ballet was dominated by the classical Russian works, Robbins said in an interview that he asked himself: “Why can’t we do ballets about our own subjects, meaning our life here in America?” This Broadway evening begins with The Concert, one of the few comedic ballets that have been internationally successful. Since its premiere in New York in 1956, several big companies have included it in their repertoire. The Royal Danish Ballet

But while for reasons not unrelated to its risqué nature and views on fidelity, many of its custodians have been compelled to bowdlerise it, this is about as delightful as opera buffa gets. KRG
is one of these, but they haven’t performed The Concert in the last ten years. For the piece, Robbins chose several piano works by Frédéric Chopin and set them to a series of entertaining dance sequences about pretentious, rough or ignorant concertgoers. Robbins himself saw these episodes as dreams that evolve when listening to music – but we might as well ignore that suggestion and look at The Concert as an absurdly funny farce. The comical acts are skilfully woven into the flow of movements that consists of both classical technique and everyday gestures. The evening turns darker with The Cage (1951), a horror story based on how female insects sometimes kill their mates after copulation. The piece is set to Igor Stravinsky’s String Concerto in D and follows one of the creatures as she grows up and becomes increasingly lethal. Robbins depicts the females exulting in their prowess with movements that depart from ordinary ballet technique. The dancers overstretch their arms, flex their feet and turn them inwards or push their hips forwards. It will be interesting to see the dancers slip into these roles, as they differ radically from the light-footed and slightly naïve characters that the Danish Bournonville tradition allots its female dancers. Also set to music by Chopin,

Classic themes such as bullying, love, puberty, formation of cliques and loneliness are brought to life in the performance by these young dancers. The drama is mixed with a little absurdity and humour, using body language, narration, new music and emerging talent to present a theatre piece that will appeal to all kinds of learners in its immediacy. the third choreography, Other Dances, combines classical ballet with folk dance steps in a pas de deux. The piece dates from 1976 and Robbins created it for Natalia Makarova and Mikhail Baryshnikov, one of the most acclaimed male dancers of the

Seun Kuti & The Egypt 80
Amager Bio Friday, 21:00; 330 kr www.amagerbio.dk www.myspace.com/seunkuti
S
eun Kuti is the youngest son of Fela Kuti, the now legendary musical innovator from Nigeria who rose to fame during the 1970s and 80s as the creator of afrobeat music. Since the 70s, the Kuti family, along with Seun’s band, have become synonymous with the afrobeat genre as its legacy has spread all over the globe. Seun is very much the heir to his father’s throne – upon Fela’s death in 1997, Seun became the lead singer of his father’s band, Egypt 80 – but perhaps more importantly, he has also adopted his father’s social and political ideals and this is what makes Seun Kuti and the Egypt 80 the passionate and formidable musical force that they are today. 2011 marked the release of Seun’s second studio album, following on from 2008’s Many Things. The new release, entitled From Africa with Fury, borrows from different places to his father’s songs – hints of dub and electronica help to give this protest album a genuinely modern feel whilst retaining the afrobeat roots that Seun Kuti comes from. Afrobeat is a genre that was created in the late ‘60s via the fusion of various aspects of jazz, funk and yoruba, a Nigerian drumming tradition featuring fast and complex patterns of drums and percussive beats, often playing at counter rhythms to one another. Afrobeat is always full of energy and exuberance and, as the first band to play in that particular style, the Egypt 80 have a masterful control of the afrobeat sound. The band’s songs don’t centre around a melody or hook vocal line, but instead focus on a strong, shoulder swaying groove that repeats throughout the song. Various instruments taking turns to add a different accent to the groove as it continues and evolves, often stretching out for ten minutes or more during the band’s live performances. Although Seun Kuti’s music always contains a strong political message – obvious examples include ‘Many Things’ and ‘African Problems’ – this does not mean it is not music to party to. In fact many of Seun’s songs are as much celebrations of the beauty of Africa and its people, as they are protests against the vast political and economic problems faced by so many of Africa’s inhabitants. However, the band by no means want to limit the party to their own continent – over the past two years they have toured throughout Europe and North and South America – in fact this is their second visit to Denmark in 2011, having played an outstanding set at Roskilde Festival . Since the inception of the afrobeat genre, it has moved out of Africa in more ways than one: many bands and artists from all over Europe and the US have cited afrobeat as an essential influence on the music they create. Perhaps the most famous examples of this is Paul Simon’s album Graceland, which borrows heavily from many forms of African music, and Talking Heads’ 1980 album Remain in Light, whose polyphonic rhythms paid tribute to the innovations of Fela Kuti and his band during the previous decade. More recently the likes of Vampire Weekend and Gorillaz have incorporated aspects of afrobeat into their sound, demonstrating that Fela Kuti’s legacy is by no means coming to an end. Our ability to share music more easily now than ever before means that African music is more accessible to those of us that live outside Africa than it has ever been. During recent years, the live show put on by Seun Kuti & The Egypt 80 has been earning respect truly worthy of the Kuti name, with several virtuoso drummers and horn players playing tight and complex rhythms but always keeping the songs accessible through simple bass lines and vocal melodies. You won’t ever feel like you walked into a basement jazz club by accident! The power of this band is unmistakeable and they should provide one of the most exciting concerts in Copenhagen all year. ceage are possibly the most exciting musical export Denmark currently has to offer. In stark contrast to the cookie-cutter traits of Scandinavian pop and indie acts, Iceage produce razor-sharp punk which resonates with local youth culture both here in copenhagen and abroad. Less of a headline spot for Iceage and more a meeting of similar musical minds, this concert at Mayhem consisted of six bands - Iceage, Skurv, Pagan Youth, Hand of Dust, Lower and Timeless Reality. The DIY spirit was in full effect, with performers taking door duty, bar duty and bottle collection the event sporting an entry price of an incredibly low 20 kroner. The evening’s highlights included Pagan Youths’ darkly tinged ballads reminiscent of Nick cave and Hand Of Dust’s incredibly cohesive rhythm section, which
blasted its way through the mandatory 20-minute set time. The formula of self promotion, self management and even booking your own gigs seems to be working for this young crop of bands, and the energy in the venue was infectious. I was looking forward to seeing Iceage again. They have spent the spring and summer on a mammoth tour around europe and this was their first gig in almost five months back on home turf. In truth, I was unsure whether this hard working ethic would further solidify their live performance or detract from the energy of the band. New Brigade, the band’s debut record, is a blistering aural assault that manages to blend their chaotic live presence with a truly exciting set of punk anthems, all wrapped up in mysterious pagan and runic symbolism. I was not disappointed! Within ten seconds of the opening number ‘White Rune’, the floor of loyal fans erupted into a frenzy of elbows and knees and in amongst the carnage I detected a band tighter and more musically adept than ever. a few sound problems did not even de-

Nothing like a man in uniform IF YOU LIKE bright sabres, gold buttons and plenty of military decorations, or are you just into men in uniforms, look no further: Kulturklik this week has some costume-related recommendations that are anything but uniform.
abeit just outside the Copenhagen Harbour area. Among the museum’s models of the sea battles and the urban development of the Copenhagen area over time, you can find sailors, private first class seamen and naval officers from the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801.
Hot-to-trot coppers In the old police station at Fælledvej 20, the Danish Police Museum invites you to experience a carnival of uniforms. You can see the development of the police uniform from the very first uniforms the Danish police force wore in 1793, which was somewhat poncy-looking with yellow pants and a red jacket, to the 1980s embattled policeman’s enforcement attire. It’s interesting to note how the uniforms develop over the period, reflecting the ever-changing assignments of the Danish police force. You get to see the policeman dressed in heavy blue wool, the mounted police, the Nimbus cop and the well-dressed police officer in black, or “the friend of ducks”, as we know him from the much-famed Wonderful Copenhagen poster from the 1950s.
Be prepared for the eccentric Christianshavn has uniforms of the less bloody sort too. The Scout Museum (Arsenalvej 10) hides out in Holmen, and here you can gain insight into the eccentric honours and uniforms of the Scout movement. Among others you can experience a wolf uniform from the 1950s in the authentic ‘Father-of-Four’ style, but the pride and joy of the museum is the uniform Queen Ingrid used to wear. She was patroness for both the Blue and the Green Girl Scouts and had her uniform custom-made so that it would cater for both the Blue and the Green Girl Scouts.
Glorious looking seamen The Danish Police Museum is also exhibiting the uniforms of the Guard Hussars from the Battle of Fælleden in 1872. If you would like to see more of its kind, a visit to the Royal Danish Naval Museum (Overgaden Oven Vandet 58) is highly recommended. Here you can view uniforms from a time when Denmark was a proud maritime nation and men were men, although they were rather short of stature, and when wars were fought ...

Among the film themes this year are: ‘Are you a movie Germaniac?,‘If you’re going to San Francisco’, ‘Yes we Canada’, ‘British Broads’, ‘Beam me up, Hottie’ and ‘Post Porn’. Thrifty, nifty dressers Also in Christianshavn, you can find the Bank and Thrift Museum (Overgaden Neden Vandet 11). joint. The cuffs were not supposed to be sullied when the treasurer counted money. Underneath the mango tree In another part of the city in the old part of Frihavn, in Dahlerups Pakhus, the history of customs and taxation revenue is being told at the Customs and Taxation Museum (Langelinie Allé 21). Here one can come face-to-face with the blue border gendarmes and the customs officer from the West Indies in his special tropical customs uniform and study the hierarchy in the Customs Revenue by counting oak foliage inscribed in the sun helmets. They were well red Among the history of uniforms, the red mailman jacket is in a league of its own and has a history that is told at length at the child-friendly Post & Tele Museum (Købmagergade 37). The red heroes - who have delivered the mail through rain, snow and sleet since the 16th century - are perhaps well on their way to becoming a thing of the past, as the Danish and Swedish mail services will be wearing identical uniforms before long. At the museum the children are allowed to try on the uniforms and climb aboard in an old mail coach. You can also meet the telegraphists with their distinctive collars onto which you can see an embroidered compass needle, and the telephonists, whose uniform dresses carry an embroidered telephone thread. A well-earnt rooftop coffee After the visit at the Post & Tele Museum you can enjoy a cup of coffee and the view of the city’s rooftops at Café Hovedtelegrafen (also at Købmagergade 37). If you are really lucky you can experience another distinctive Danish uniform worn by the Royal Life Guards, when they are marching through Købmagergade.

French fries, milkshakes and Burger & Bun’s own homebrewed LA Lager are also available. Halifax Burger Restaurant & Bar Frederiksborggade 35, Cph K and others; 3332 7711; www.halifax.nu; burgers from 115kr Halifax Burger Restaurant & Bar is a firm favourite of the Danes and for good reason. Casper Hernández Cordes & Donald Filipsen Sun 22:00; Free adm Sound artist Casper Hernandez Cordes teams up with improvisational pianist Donald Filipsen to create a performance that will truly be a journey into the spontaneous unknown. With assistance from young music students, the duo plan to take the audience on a journey with the help of their instruments (both digital and traditional), their voices and their smart phones. David Moss & Sdeng Literaturhaus, Møllegade 7, Cph N; Tue 20:00; tickets 50kr Moss’s career has been one driven by the combination of a gift and technique. As a leader in the alternative vocal techniques, Moss has done everything from serving as a soloist for the Berlin Philharmonic to making appearances at small clubs around the world. Tonight, he is joined by Sdeng, an electronic group hailing from Italy. Kresten Osgood Trio Literaturhaus, Tue 21.00; tickets 50kr Osgood has been a leading avantgarde voice for years, and assisting him in his exploration of the musically unique and bizarre are Peter Friis Nielsen on electric bass and saxophonist Laura Toxværd. Expect a brand of music with a futuristic bent while still playing on each artist’s respective influences.

BACK FOR the 33rd consecutive time is the Copenhagen Irish Festival. Held between November 3 and 6, the festival will be presenting many new exiting artists, as well as legends of traditional Irish music. With four days of intense Irish shenanigans planned, the festival will be a grand opportunity for both Irish and foreigners to enjoy a taste of what makes the country so great. Held in the middle of Copenhagen, with two dedicated music and cultural venues, the festival line-up is jam packed with great artists. Right from the get-go this year’s festival promises to be a blast, with the festivities beginning at PH Caféen, where the interior will be completely redecorated. Whilst exact details are being kept under wraps, organisers have said that visitors can expect to feel like they are in a beautiful Irish village. The International Shamrocks & Ioscaid CSM; Fri 4 Nov, 20:00, doors open 18:30; tickets 200kr The festival will really heat up on Friday when these two bands play at the Copenhagen School of Music. The International Shamrocks will present a great variety of Irish traditional instrumental music from melancholic 17th century O’Carolan pieces to more energetic numbers. While relative newcomers Ioscaid - pronounced ‘iss kidge’ - have only been together since 2008, but you would never know watching them. Frequently on tours, they recently won the Siansa Gael Linn competition.
Kids Snedronning (Snow Queen)
Theatre Zeppelin, Valdemarsgade 15, Cph V; ends Nov 29, performances Sun 13:00, Tue & Thu 09:30 & 12:00, Wed 10:00, Fri: 10:00; Tickets: 35165kr; www.zeppelin.dk Proving that HC Andersen’s stories are just as much of a hit today as they were long ago, The Snow Queen is an adventurous journey of evolution. Set at a hotel far away from civilisation, the story follows two friends Kay and Gerda who are suddenly delivered a magic mirror - with no idea where it came from. The mirror turns out to be a gateway to another world – the Snow Queen’s icy universe – where all your innermost dreams and wishes come true … but for a price. Visually stunning, the set boasts a raw and rusty icy hotel by innovative, award-winning designer Joanni Eggert. The Snow Queen is a fantastic dramatisation sure to warm up kids’ imaginations. EM

Andy Irvine + Dónal Lunny & Full Set CSM; Sat 5 Nov, 20:00, doors open 18:30; tickets 250kr Irvine and Lunny, individually, together and in many different contexts, have played concerts all over the world, recording and producing albums since the 1960s. They know each other well as they were once co-members of one of Ireland’s most legendary bands, Planxty, who in the 1970s achieved new standards for Irish traditional music. To hear Irvine sing is to hear Ireland’s soul. A pioneer of the Irish music industry, he is an icon who has performed with such artists as Christy Moore, Dónal Lunny, Liam Flynn and Paul Brady. Legendary bouzouki player Lunny, meanwhile, is a producer, songwriter, musician, television and radio personality and so much more. Also playing on Saturday night is Full Set, a band that truely understands how to create splendid and unique different sounds full of energy and surprises whilst remaining true to their traditional roots.

BY SIMON COOPER
ANYONE who’s spent any time at all in Copenhagen or Denmark will know that the country’s crowning culinary achievement is the brunch. Part French, part American and part, well, Danish, this tray of treats is served up on kitchen and cafe tables around the land, and can be adapted to suit any appetite, taste preference or degree of hangover. The other morning, as I so often do, I created a brunch out of what was knocking around in my kitchen. Of course, this being autumn in Denmark, that largely consisted of things like apples and pears - which led to my interpretation of a Waldorf Salad - but it also took in the classic eggs and bacon. It wouldn’t be brunch without it.

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Copenhagen N; 3535 7535; fourcourse menu 450kr, sevencourse 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you will find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it is well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, 1052 Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; www.1th.dk; 1,250kr per person 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard to-find-door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. Perfect Scrambled Eggs eggs butter chopped chives crème fraiche
I have to admit that this scrambled eggs recipe is pretty much Gordon Ramsey’s. I know what you’re thinking: I can make scrambled eggs thank you very much, I need no help. Wrong. If you’re not doing them as per the method below then you need guidance! Break however many eggs you want into a pan
along with a tablespoon of diced butter. Turn up the heat on the stove to a medium-high and use a spatula (very important) to mix the eggs. Always keeping the eggs moving with the spatula, take the pan on and off the heat. This allows the heat remaining in the pan to cook the eggs whilst not allowing them to get too hot. You’re going for slow, delicate cooking. As the eggs begin to firm up note, you’re looking for a loose, silky texture at the end - stick in a bit more butter. Season the eggs right at the last minute when they come off the heat - also add the chopped chives and a tablespoon of crème fraiche.

Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. mushrooms. each course, needless to say, was accompanied with wines that were not only carefully chosen, but were organic and had aged in original caskets. The naturalness at krogs does not end there. As I was presented the various courses, I could not help but notice the freshness of the ingredients bought from small local suppliers, such as the langoustine from Gilleleje, and the vegetables that I was told are purchased daily. In other words, one can indulge at krogs without even a
SUNDAY BRUNCH
As DenmArk’s gastronomical reputation soars high, there is one particular restaurant that is intent on defying all trends and pre-conceived notions while fighting to bring back traditions with a 21st century twist. I am talking about krogs Fiskerestaurant on Gammel strand in the heart of Copenhagen. krogs, one of the oldest restaurants in the country, began serving food in 1910 and was the result of the vision and seafood passion of Christian soerensen krog, or ‘Oyster krog’ as he was popularly known. Perhaps his intentions were to set up a fine dining house where one could unwind after a hard day’s work, for the area, which is today a prestigious yet cosy location in the centre of town, used to be the old fishing harbour of Copenhagen, with the fish market located just around the corner from the restaurant. In 1915 the restaurant changed hands and moved to its current location, undergoing a complete facelift and relaunching as a distinguished eatery under the assured leadership of Jutta Berg, who quickly established an excellent reputation. Her recipes and cooking brought such fame that the elderly population of the city still reminisces over the aromatic wafts of her famous fish soup. so much so that Christian X, who ruled at the time, was known to be a regular customer. And speaking of famous people, it was none other than Orson Welles who opined that krogs was the only restaurant north of the riviera that was capable of producing a decent bouillabaisse. Today every aspect of krogs boasts regality, from the gold-trimmed furnishings to the silverware and the baboon perched on the wall (a gift from the royal house). Over the past year, since taking over the restaurant, head chef Boris Buono, who is a Formel Btrained chef with international experience, has been striving to give krogs another facelift as it reaches its centenary. Buono aspires to bring back classic scandinavian and French dishes by giving them a modern edge. I witnessed this in the various courses that I was served, from the Pickled herring with a jelly base and the Dover sole, to the Danish lobster served with truffle and spinach and monkfish served with fresh cream and chanterelle
feeling a trace of guilt due to the high quality of the ingredients. no expense is spared obtaining ingredients, which after careful study is purchased from the best sources, such as the blanched tomato in one of the courses, which I was told was bought in napoli. And when the food is of such high quality, it is only expected that the service is of a similar standard. It is at very few restaurants today that one can find relaxed and attentive waiting staff who inform and educate you about the wine and the food.
As is the trend with most gourmet and michelin-starred restaurants, krogs is not about culinary extravaganza. As Buono puts it: “An evening at krogs is not about witnessing a magnificent display of culinary experiments, but about switching off from the daily hustle bustle, and committing yourself to a meal that will not only satisfy your palates but leave a genteel aftertaste.” anee jayaraj

Blistering barnacles: finally another film worth seeing in 3D JESSICA O’SULLIVAN
The Adventures of Tintin 3D (7) Dir: Steven Spielberg; US action, 2011, 107mins; Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis
Premiered October 27 Playing nationwide
T
HE ADVENTURES of Tintin is based on the much loved Tintin comic books that have for decades captured both children’s and adults’ imagina-
tions. Directed by the infamous Steven Spielberg and produced by the super clever Sir Peter Jackson, the script is based on three of the stories: The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn, and Red Rackham’s Treasure. From the very beginning of this action-packed film viewers can expect to fall in love with the ever-curious and always fearless young reporter Tintin (Bell) and his ever loyal companion, Snowy, the super-smart, snow-white terrier. Filmed in 3D, this film is as much about a great story as it is the amazing special effects. The tale begins with Tintin and Snowy discovering an explosive and deadly secret, concealed within a centuries-old model ship. As the story progresses the loveable two are drawn into an old mystery, whilst battling with the fun and scrupulous gangster Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharines (Craig), a merciless bandit who is convinced that Tintin has acquired the clues to an immense treasure. Tintin - with the help of Snowy, bumbling Captain Haddock (Serkis) and two hopeless detectives, Thompson and Thomson (Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) - sets out on an adventur-

ous journey that takes him half way round the world. Here he is forced to outwit and outmanoeuver his many enemies in a breathless race to find the remains of the ship, the Unicorn, which may just contain more than any of them had ever bargained for. From the opening credits to the very end this film is a playful contradiction of old and new. Whilst the film very much stays true to the mythical and timeless world that Hergé so masterfully created - think cobbled streets, shuttered windows, old ladies walking decadent dogs - the introduction of slick film techniques and 3D wizardry
make it a modern story for an audience that isn’t so easily impressed by standard special effects anymore. One scene that excellently demonstrates the joys of modern cinematic techniques is when Captain Haddock, stricken by sobriety, relays his family history. Here the viewer is taken on a glorious visual assault as Spielberg reaches a height of creativity not seen since Avatar. Through masterful match cuts and dissolves, viewers are sure to be wowed by reflections in blades and bubbles, the bottom of a whiskey bottle transforming into a telescope and a desert morphing into a
squalling ocean. Spielberg has long been an avid fan of The Adventures of Tintin comic books, as well as Jackson himself. Whilst it was Spielberg who bought the rights to Tintin after Hergé’s death in 1983, it was Jackson who first suggested that a live action adaptation would not do justice to the comic books and that motion capture was the best way of representing Hergé’s world of Tintin. As with any literary adaptation there is always the concern that the characters will disappoint the fans of the books. Luckily Spielberg has
True to form, SJP really sucks in the city I Don’t Know How She Does It (15) Dir: Douglas McGrath; US comedy, 2011, 89 mins; Sarah Jessica Parker, Greg Kinnear, Pierce Brosnan, Christina Hendricks

ARAH JESSICA PARKER is a hotshot investment banker/wannabe super mum in this new dramedy that brings nothing new to the genre other than to say that trying to be a man is a waste of a woman. (well D’uh!)
Let me start off by admitting (embarrassingly) that I enjoyed watching this film regardless of the facts that A. I am not a woman (clearly the target audience). B. I am not a rich and successful woman with a job that I love, a full time nanny, a great house, a wonderful husband, terrific kids and wanting for absolutely nothing (maybe a few less of these out there). C. It is a mediocre film at best (plenty of these out there). SJP is Kate, an investment banker (here’s a job that will really win over the audience) ‘struggling’ in a man’s world when she finally gets her big break. Jack Abelhammer (Bro-
snan) loves her fund proposal and wants to finalise it – but that means many flights between Boston and New York. But how will Kate have time to bake a pie for her daughter’s bake sale? (This is apparently a big problem). The movie then follows Kate, who runs around with more ferver than a tasmanian devil, as she tries to balance her home life with her architect husband Richard (Kinnear) and their two kids with her work life. Although to be honest, perhaps if they had just sat down and talked about the situation they could have worked it out and saved 30 minutes of film. Along the way the movie is
played it safe here by creating a Tintin who, with his neutral English accent and boyish gait, is easily likeable although perhaps not overly memorable. The pace throughout the film is extremely fast, and with its endless chase sequences, keeping up can at times be tiring. This aside, the film catches you from the very beginning and makes it hard for you to resist joining in. Action-packed, visually dazzling, and fantastically fun, Tintin creator Hergé thought that Spielberg was the only director capable of filming Tintin, and he may just be right.
populated with cookie cutter characters (just like the phrase cookie cutter is very cookie cutter) such as stern boss (Kelsey Grammar) and the office jerk (Seth Meyers) in addition to actual supermom Wendy Best (Busy Phillips). The lone interesting character is Kate’s assistant Momo (Olivia Munn) but even her robot-like character melts into something else by the end. Let me now finish and say that after writing this review, I have no idea why I enjoyed watching the movie the first time, but I have no intention of ever watching it again. KEVIN EVANCIO

New this Week What’s your number? Dir: Mark Mylod; US Comedy, 2011, 106 mins; Anna Faris, Chris Evans, Ari Graynor What’s Your Number feels more like an underdeveloped sitcom pilot than a hit romantic comedy. Faris plays the role of Ally Darling, a swinging single who reads a magazine article entitled ‘How many romantic partners should a woman have in a lifetime?’ Ally realises her number is high - 19 - and figures she must have let the right guy get away … so begins the hunt for the best ex. Faris delivers with perfect comic timing proving she’s better than the film she’s in - if only the writers could’ve made her character less hysterical and more real. The film takes forever to get underway and when it finally does, you find yourself looking for something to distract you while waiting for the inevitable conclusion.
Halloween Horror Tricks Festival
Husets Biograf, Magstræde 14, Cph k; Halloween Horror Tricks Festival: Fri, Sat, 19:00 & 21:30, tickets 50kr per show, 70kr for both shows; Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night Thu 23:30, Fri, Sat 22:30, Sun 21:30, Mon 21:00, tickets 65kr; http:// husetmagstraede.dk Celebrate the great American tradition of Halloween with some self-induced scares from old horrors. Friday night will see the 1941 Murder in 3-D (a ten
minute blood bath!) followed by The Tingler from 1959. At 21:30 a 35mm ‘trailer show’ will play for just over an hour with trailers from The Exorcist, Demon Seed and Vampire Kids. If you’re part of Saturday night’s audience, you’ll be transported back to 1959 with the film House on Haunted Hill. Following that will be a repeat screening of Friday’s 35mm trailer show. Showing every night for five nights is Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night. Directed by Toshikazu Naga and running for 90 minutes this is the officially sanctioned Japanese sequel to Oren Peli’s 2009 Paranormal Activity. The storyline involves the Yamano family, who live in a remote area of Tokyo, Japan. When their father goes away on business, 19-year-old Koichi is left to look after his wheelchair-bound sister who has returned to Japan after surviving a car accident while in America. When strange and unexplainable things start to happen in the Yamano home, Koichi persuades his sister to set up a video camera to capture them on film. What begins as small supernatural events grows quickly to a deadly and terrifying haunting experience. EM
Book Your Tickets Drive (15) Dir: Nicolas Winding Refn; 2011; 95 mins; Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan Make sure you’re in your seats early for this one or else you’ll miss one of the most brilliant opening scenes in a movie ... ever. Refn manages to build ex-
traordinary tension before igniting brief outbursts of violence. Sheer brilliance! KE
One Day (7) Dir: Lone Scherfig; UK/US drama, 2011,107 min; Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Patricia Clarkson Everyone could probably point to a past event of which the consequences have literally dictated who and where they are today. ‘One Day’ is a meditation on this theme with a bit more in the mix. The nicely interwoven themes, and the generally believable acting have the film living up to its own ambitious intentions, delivering an emotional punch in the gut. KG
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows II (11) Dir: David Yates; 2011, 130 mins; Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint The Harry Potter finale ended an era last July. Cinematic magic follows our heroic threesome, and with a litany of impossible foes and an action-packed battle sequence finale, it’s one of the better HP films. SS
Avoid like the Plague Abduction (11) Dir: John Singleton; US action, 2011, 106 mins; Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Michael Nyquist, Abduction is a fast and furious ride in which violent things will happen whether the plot has
prepared for them or not. Realism and filmic integrity are sacrificed for the obligatory and predictable Hollywood-isms. The story runs that one night while working on a school project with a cute girl, Nathan (Lautner) discovers his baby picture on a missing children’s website. One ill-advised phone call later and he finds himself in a sinister web of corruption and hitmen. So who is it for? The formula of having a grim subtext frequently eclipsed by scenes of animal magnetism may be suitable for couples out on a date but we need to call a spade a spade - Abduction is frenzied, flashy and, not surprisingly, pretty shallow. KG
still probably love this movie, though there is less Mr Bean and more Blackadder this time around. KE
Footloose (11) Dir: Craig Brewer; US dance, 2011, 100 mins; Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid, Andie MacDowell For many who grew up loving this classic film, this remake will no doubt destroy a story that for so many people was almost flawless. JOS

Crazy, Stupid, Love (7) Dir: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa; 2011; 118 mins; Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling Carell re-enacts his 40-Year-Old Virgin character in this fluffy, finely manicured romcom. He and Gosling make an appealing buddy couple, with Gosling alluring as a lithe and ruthless tomcat. Pleasure can be had watching this; however the slapstick finale feels hopelessly banal. AS
Johnny English Reborn Dir: Oliver Parker; UK com, 2011, 101 mins; Rowan Atkinson, Gillian Anderson, Dominic West Not knowing whether to take itself seriously or be goofball Bean funny, Johnny English Reborn hovers in the dreaded middle ground of comic purgatory. Bottom line: It has some LOL moments and fans of Atkinson will
Bobby Fischer Against the World (11) Dir: Liz Garbus; 2011; 93 min Bobby Fischer, Regina Fischer This is a poignant and unsettling film, but Garbus provides no revelations for anyone who has followed Fischer’s story. AS
Horrible Bosses (11) Dir: Seth Gordon; 2011; 100 mins; Jason Bateman, Charlie Day Ferociously plot-driven with several hilarious scenes, Horrible Bosses unfolds like dominos tumbling faster and louder. KRG

Page One: Inside the New York Times (15) Dir: Andrew Rossi; US doc, 2011, 88 mins Clearly aimed at media nerds, the film is an unashamed labour of love revealing Rossi’s admiration and respect for the grand old ‘Grey Lady’. AS
Friends with Benefits (3) Dir: Will Gluck; 2011; 109 mins; Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, Woody Harrelson, Richard Jenkins The film is fast and funny, but ultimately predictable. Your enjoyment of it may well come down to how much you love or hate Justin Timberlake! VS
The Three Musketeers 3D (11) Dir: Paul WS Anderson; UK adventure, 2011, 102 mins; Logan Lerman, Matthew MacFadyen, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans When you have the director behind the outrageous Resident Evil pictures, with money to burn and a desire to do 3D, attempting to rework a classic piece of literature, what could possibly go wrong? A lot. Lerman, MacFadyen and Stevensen show good chemistry as war buddies but don’t get the screen time to really show it. This incarnation of ‘The Three Musketeers’ is doomed to the same fate as the 2010 Robin Hood remake – they just don’t offer enough to jump start their ‘hidden’ franchise hopes. KE

Downton Abbey - season two SV1, Sat 21:30
THE SECOND series of Downton Abbey resumes two years after the first left off – smack in the middle of the Battle of the Somme, and while it’s a brief scene, it’s as fine a recreation of World War One as has ever been committed to celluloid. But never fear, by the time the credits have run, the heaving soldiers have made way for bosoms, and the gut-rot for gossip, as the likeable upstairs-downstairs period drama returns to the estate to catch up on whose dead, whose wed and whose shagging Fred the footman. Talking of which, whatever happed to English cricket’s legendary pedalo operator who made batsmen quake all over the globe but risked getting injured every time he tied his laces together. In Freddie Flintoff Versus The World
(DR HD, Tue 17:30) he hooks up with some other loveable bad boys - plus Dennis Rodman, who quit basketball to become a reality TV pro - to take on various dangerous sports. Freddie will need a personal hospital. Rodman was married to Carmen Electra at one point and she’s the star of the British comedy I Want Candy (DR HD, Wed 21:30), which we can only presume is on TV because somebody at DR lost a bet. Electra, against type, plays a porn star – the first ever time her nakedness hasn’t been gratuitous. Saying that, her take on How to Make it in America would have been more interesting than this garbage. What stated life as a comedy about two New Yorkers trying to make it in the fashion world, is now
being increasingly billed as a dramedy. The Washington Post thought there was “a repellent amount of hipitude”. Elsewhere, there’s some scary films for Halloween, from the pretty poor The Last House on the Left (TV3, Sun 23:50) to the rather good Trick ‘r Treat (TV3+, Mon 23:15); if you moved to Denmark to feel a kin- SV1, Sat 21:30 Downton Abbey - season two dred spirit with his biggest fans, you’ll love the doc Leonard Bernstein (DR K, Wed 15:55); The Greeks: Crucible of Civilisation (DR K, Sun 18:55, ep 2: Wed 20:00), narrated by actor Liam Neeson, is Zeussent if how they ever ran an empire is all Greek to you; and 2009 doc Napoleon Bonaparte (DR K, MonThu 19:00) has its moments – our favourite is Waterloo.
