IS IT MY IMAGINATION, or does Leonard Cohen (see G6 for details of his gig at Rosenborg Castle) look more and more like Leonard Nimoy every day? Same first name, roughly the same age, Nimoy’s released a few records: maybe one of them died and since then, the other’s been living a double life, fitting Star Trek conventions into a busy touring schedule. Most likely Cohen as the work’s hardly been queuing up for Nimoy. He’s disproportionately popular in Denmark, isn’t he? Can’t say I was that familiar with him when I lived in Britain, but as the Olympics reminded everyone, ramming it down your throats until you were choking on the lyrics, we did invent music and have enough of our own to deal with. We keep on meaning to do a feature on ‘disproportionately popular’ foreigners, but never get much further than Cohen and the author Paul Auster who, I’m glad to say, is not among those attending Louisiana Literature (see
G8), because if he was, it would probably suggest he was the only foreign writer they could persuade to come. Fair play to Louisiana. This event actually draws some big names (including Patti Smith), and it’s safe to say that in just three years it has become the most important international literature festival in Denmark. Another venue upping its game of late has been Rosenborg Castle. Along with the Cohen concert, it is also this week staging a one-off performance of Much Ado about Nothing (see G2), and the same theatre group, ADG Europe, will return to the castle on September 20 to perform Brave New World. Elsewhere, it’s another busy week in the city. Bust a gut taking part in the ECCO walkathon and Christiansborg Rundt (G8) and then pile it back on at Copenhagen Cooking (G2, see website for a list of all the free events). And finally, for the insane, we’ve got the X Factor auditions (G8). But whatever you do, don’t sing ‘The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins’ – a 1968 song by Nimoy that is arguably the worst of all time and led to fans of Star Trek campaigning for Nimoy to play Aragorn in a live action film of Lord of the Rings. It was all too much for JRR Tolkien, who died five years later.
Copenhagen Cooking is back on the menu for an eighth time, as organisers invite locals and visitors alike to come along and experience this remarkable gastronomic celebration that lasts for ten days. With over 130 experiences to choose from, northern Europe’s biggest food festival promises to be an unforgettable event. Running until 2 September, the festival is inspired by this year’s Copenhagen Cooking poster (see cover), which depicts a merman emerging from the sea with a seasonal catch of, among other things, mackerel and oysters. Copenhagen Cooking 2012 will be particularly focusing on the Nordic region’s culinary heritage, seasonal produce and sustainable principles. The range of events are overwhelming and include Nordic tastings, gastronomic street parties, urban gardens, sustainable seafood, oyster cruises, chocolate lunches, underwater guerrilla dining and much more. The festival events have been divided into ten categories: culinary adventures, fine dining, green revolution, food at kids’ height, master the culinary arts, sweet nectar of the vines, the sweet tooth, worth a detour, the bounty of the sea, and bargain meals. Helping you to make ease of the programme, we have handpicked our top picks for each category.

24 - 30 August 2012 Copenhagen Art Festival
Multiple locations in Cph; starts Aug 24, ends Sep 2; for ticket prices and open hours see listings; www.cph-artfestival.org THE COPENHAGEN Art Festival, several years in the making, launches this month with a sampling of local and international art favourites exhibiting work around the theme of ‘community’. This large international art festival with artists from Belgium to Brazil creates community with art work that involves audience participation in the form of artist walks, shared meals, book making, sound making, and performance workshops, as well as a participatory filmmaking project with controversial director Lars Von Trier. Festival-goers are intended to move beyond passive art appreciation and interact with the art to have the full festival experience. Henriette Bretton-Meyer, the director of the Overgaden Institute of Contemprorary Art, says that the festival organisers have taken the community theme seriously, choosing a more democratic structure rather than the usual ‘single curatorial vision’ typically favoured by art exhibitions and festivals. Overgaden is one of

of community that appeals to everyone’s understanding of the word. Many people find community by sharing food. Festival organisers have made a special point of programming foodcentred art projects. BrettonMeyer encourages festival-goers to find art and community in food-themed events. She says that you can join a community of fellow foodies at the Overgaden Bake-Off. On Saturday September 1, bring a homemade cake to the art centre to enter it into an open competition. Judges include actress Anne Marie Helger, the cake expert from La Glace, Marianne Stagetorn Kolos, and Dansk Radio’s Adrian Hughes. Held outside the art centre in Christianshavn Harbour, guests can enjoy music, coffee, and cake. Besides the cake competition, Overgaden is hosting a Potluck Dinner (August 30), where visitors are encouraged to BYOV (bring your own vegetable) to be shared in a collective soup pot. Danish artist Jesper Aabille will be on the scene with his mobile kitchen, and art fans can eat a meal around long tables set up in the art centre. Besides shared cake and soup, art lovers can share a drink. Starting Friday August 31, at Kunsthall Nikolaj you can have an artist for a bartender at Popup Bar. On three consecutive

Spectators or penises – that’s the beauty of good art, you never know for sure
Friday evenings, a different artist, including local favourites FOS and Superflex, will run an open-air bar. The artists design the evening’s experience for bar patrons. Even kids can get in on the food and art fun. On August 26, kids can build community over soup, when they join a workshop with Swedish music archaeologist Cajas S Lund. Lund teaches kids how to make sounds with soup bones at Kunsthall Charlottenborg. Food is just one way to bring people together to build
an artistic community – as shown in the diverse festival programming. Other ways to join in these art-based group activities include attending Greek artist Yorgos Sapountzis’s walking performance around monuments in the centre of Copenhagen (August 28), getting lost in the mysterious fog created by Chinese artist Yuan Gong, visiting British artist Ruth Ewan’s survey of alternative communities at Kunsthall Charlottenborg, or Danish artist Jeppe Hein’s large scale outdoor in-
stallation. Hordes of art lovers will have the chance to join other like-minded folks to form a roving art community during the Copenhagen Art Festival. Most of the festival’s participatory, community building events do not cost extra. Some, however – like the Luxury Art Walk and The Social Act, an art dinner – charge a separate fee to participate. Check the festival website before attending any of the special programming for cost, location, date, and times.

Each centre will present unique exhibitions and events, with a series of both indoor and outdoor programming starting on August 24. And then until September 2 there are various activities – special programmes, workshops, dinners, walks etc – while the exhibitions will remain on view throughout the autumn. Anne Kilgest, the curator at Gammel Strand, says that “community can be a broad ranging term”, but that it was a natural fit for the overall festival theme. Both she and BrettonMeyer note that the Copenhagen Art Festival’s main goal is to raise awareness for contemporary art by presenting new ways to understand and experience art. The theme of community, perennially popular in the art world, both reflects the unification of Copenhagen’s contemporary art venues and functions as an umbrella structure to present a variety of art projects. usic legends bring out our inner-hypocrite. We love their music, but prefer the earlier stuff; we buy tickets to see them in concert but afterwards we complain about how it just wasn’t the same; somewhere between being young(er) and arrogant and having to face our own mortality, we complain about the ageing state of musical legends but then shed tears and utter creepy, desolate one-liners (like “The world is now a sadder place”) when we learn of their deaths or retirements from the music scene. Leonard Cohen isn’t a hypocrite. “I’m old and the mirrors don’t lie,” he confesses in one of his songs off his latest album, Old Ideas (which also gave the title to the world tour he’s currently on), yet another poetic comeback about love and loss, after almost eight years of no album releases. “Listeners have been relying on Cohen’s heartbroken yet grinning, world-weary yet hopeful voice to get through that night for decades,” observed Time magazine. “And this album should continue that for a whole new batch of souls.” But as charming as he remains today, not even Cohen, the eternal poet/troubadour, is spared the unnecessary comments about his age or his seemingly fading voice in some of his concert reviews. Still, others prefer to commend his maturity, taking delight in discovering a new side to him, more charming and wise, and a deeper, gruff voice, reminiscent of Tom Waits. Because just like a Christmas party hosted at the local culture house in any small Danish town, his concerts attract so many different people – of all ages, musical tastes, backgrounds etc – to whom he is the common denominator through the lyrical beauty, truthfulness and simple wisdom of his songs. “All I’ve got to put in a song is my own experience,” he tells The Guardian. And his human experience will invariably mirror those of his fans. ‘Dance me to the end of love’ reminds one of his parents’ love story, ‘I’m your man’ is the song another heard on her first date with her boyfriend, while ‘Chelsea Hotel’ gives a third butterflies at the thought of an impossible love from long ago. Even if you’re not a dedicated Cohen fan, most people have a song that rings deep inside them and summons a love story: a memory that makes their hearts hop. Just ask them. That’s why he’s persevered for 50 years, releasing 12 studio albums, four poetry books and two novels (and also a lot of private time). This is his first visit to Denmark, a country where he is particularly popular (hence the choice of the spacious grounds of Rosenborg Castle) since his triumphant 2008-2010 world tour, which featued a touching three-hour long concert in Odense. Like then, he will also be joined by the British female duo The Webb Sisters. Letitia Despina

FRIDAY 24
Amager Bio; 20:00; 190kr Formed back in 1995 by the Danish duo Katrine Stochholm and Henriette Sennenvaldt, the vision of Under Byen (which translates as ‘Under The City’) has evolved into a collective project that now involves a mini-orchestra consisting of no less than eight musicians. Of a similar mould to Björk, Under Byen tinker with the experimental, giving body to a jazzy, undulating and often eerie soundscape that is shaped by an eclectic array of electronic and traditional instruments.
Review Fat Freddy’s drop hhhhhh
August 18; Vega
I
f any particular musical genre can personify summer best, the jazzy dub and reggae of Fat Freddy’s Drop undoubtedly makes a top choice after the band’s show at Vega’s Musikens Hus last Saturday. The audience was certainly treated to a display worthy of any good summer jam festival, even in the packed concert hall of the Store Vega. The Wellington-based band, trading a newer, more exotic Zealand for its older, northern counterpart, landed tune after tune before a conquered and enthusiastic audience. The seven-member line-up, combining horns – trombone, trumpet and saxophone, typical of the genre – along with a synthesiser, electronic keyboards and pre-recorded percussions on a sampler, offered an eclectic display, while still remaining true to their origins as a jam session and improvisation band.
Gwilym Simcock & Yuri Goloubev
CPH Jazzhouse; 20:00; 120kr British pianist Gwilym Simcock and Russian double-bassist Yuri Goloubev are hailed as one of the most exciting duos in classical music. It’s a meeting of two master musicians: Simcock’s most recent record, Good Days at Schloss Elmau (2011), was a nominee for a prestigious Mercury Music Award, while Goloubev has been a tremendous force in Moscow’s rich opera world. Aficionados have tagged this as one of the most exciting collaborations to have occurred in the jazz world of late.
Returning fans were treated to the band’s most memorable hits, from acclaimed albums like ‘Live at The Matterhorn’ (2001) and ‘Based on a True Story’ (2009). Group tunes like “Hope” and ‘Silver and Gold’ – which was performed for the first time in the group’s appearance in Copenhagen last year – were undoubtedly the biggest crowd pleasers. But a great deal of the show was used to unveil the band’s upcoming studio album, set for release in 2013. These new songs carry a heavier electronic touch with further use of the synthesiser, parting ways with the band’s former instrumental habits and making the live performance somewhat livelier than simple dub or reggae could have done. The crowd enjoyed the mutation. In the standing rows, people danced intensely at times while bathing in a smoke-filled room reeking of cannabis. In the higher floors, where a slightly older crowd sat watching the performance from above, people stood infected by the good mood of their fellow spectators, dancing, shouting, and stomping on the floors and chairs each

Cafe Nemoland; 20:00; free adm Native to Denmark, the sevenpiece band offer an experimental style of synth, electro and indie pop that has become phenomenally popular among the Danes. The band are known for their memorable performances – even if what they’re playing isn’t all that fashionable. Only three years ago the band took the Danes by storm with their second record, Enter Metropolis (2009). Failing to churn out any winning hits since the likes of ‘Dry Lips’, they’ve practically evaporated into thin air, with only their loyal fans turning out for gigs. Still, this concert is a free one!

Chicago Jazz Festival: Pierre Dørge’s New Jungle Orchestra
CPH Jazzhouse; 20:00; 180kr Led by influential Danish bandleader Pierre Dørge, the New Jungle Orchestra is the brainchild of a project that sought to combine west-African, Asian, and traditional jazz elements together to give rise to a unique cosmopolitan sound. Not sure who Fat Freddy is – guess he was dropped in the early days
time a song came to an end. Fat Freddy’s Drop proved versatile, alternating these fresh out-of-the-oven electro beats with smoother, slower, jazzy dub-ish sequences, swaying the crowd into a relaxation-induced trance. Singer and frontman Dallas Tamaira – AKA Joe Dukie – was on top of his art, supplying powerful vocals which, combined with compelling lyrics, caused riots amidst a roaring audience. Showmanship was also the trademark of unchained trombonist Joe Lindsay, whose cheerful gimmicks, dancing,
and passionate handling of his instrument brought him several ovations. Each band member enjoyed his own moment in the spotlight, with crowd favourites including a 90-second screamer of a guitar solo and a much applauded saxophonist on the loose. It took the band no less than two encores and several flattering goodbye speeches to bid the crowd adieu, leaving each one of them with an unexpected taste of summer, perfectly appropriate for the weekend’s heatwave. KIDS CORNER
WHAT A WONDERFUL couple of weeks it has been sharing the triumphs and tears of the global athletes at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The boys saw many of the various sports, and I watched as their enthusiasm and patriotism for both Great Britain and Denmark grew as the Games progressed. I remember clearly as a child running endless laps around the garden as my father timed me and my cousins whilst we aimed to emulate Linford Christie and co. (As an adult, I now think he was being kind to us and that my nine second 100-metre sprint was possibly fictitious on his part.) And I hoped that the spirit of the Games would infect the children in much the same way and was delighted one day to find them perfecting forward rolls in unison as they watched the gymnastics. I was ever so slightly less delighted upon realising that at the peak of each roll their aim was to emit wind from their bottoms, but their giggles showed they had no such inhibitions. As I hear them charge around the garden being Mo Farah, I feel a sense of responsibility and a need to bottle their excitement for sports, and thankfully Copenhagen has lots to offer in this respect. Just last week, my eldest spent five days training with hundreds of schoolage children at a Danish football camp. He had an amazing time and came home exhausted but eager to return each morning to his new friends and a very well organised yet fun training programme. Of course, the weather does dictate and each sport has its own season, so it is worth investigating what happens

COPENHAGEN ZOO is always well worth a day trip. Dating back to 1859, the zoo retains a focus on giving as much space to the animals as possible. During the last 25 years, Copenhagen Zoo has been extensively renovated with the aim of replacing cages with enclosures that recreate animals’ natural environments, giving a better lifestyle to the animals, and a more realistic experience to visitors. Norman Foster’s mightily impressive glass-domed elephant house is just one example of the progress made. In recent years, the zoo has expanded its activities to also include other events – the now traditional Halloween event is just one example. Probably nothing will ever rival the three-month 1901 exhibition of 25 native Indians in a custom-built Indian village, visited by an estimated 180,000 people, but the zoo now also has regular events after normal opening hours (10:00-18:00) where visitors can see a different side to zoo-life. On Wednesday August 29, the zoo will be opening its doors until 22:00 for the inaugural Harvest Celebration (Høstfest). A number of activities not normally associated with the day-to-day activities of a zoo will be on offer. During the day you can put on your gardening gloves, dig deep and plant your very own apple tree. This will be followed up with expert advice on how to make your own apple juice/cider and the chance to sample some apple-based products. A master butcher will be at hand to demonstrate the noble art of creating the Danish rolled meat sausage (rullepølse) –

Children’s Play Places BEING A PARENT or carer isn’t always easy. Days seem to melt into one as you constantly look for ways to keep the kids amused without driving yourself insane. Luckily, sanity is on the horizon as Copenhagen has a ridiculous amount of venues that are perfect for adults seeking fellow adult company and children of all ages.

You’ll have as much fun as two frolicking lions that have just trapped a tourist
whether or not these will be fed to the many carnivorous beasts in the zoo is unclear, but human guests can sample the meaty wares on offer. We all know that bears just love honey, when they are not pilfering from picnic baskets! Specialists in the field will be showing you how to make cakes of honey designed as tasty titbits for the ravenous brown bears. These will then be fed to the brown bears during the evening session. In July, a baby zebra was born into the zoo world – the zoo, of course, likes to encourage the animals to sow their wild oats and has been rather successful in this endeavour. Guests, on this day, will have the chance to experiment with wheat and roll their own oats to create tasty oatmeal concoctions suitable for both humans and animals. The day is open to everybody, but lucky holders of an annual zoo pass are allowed to bring in one guest for free during the whole day. Don’t despair if you don’t have one, as there is one cunningly hidden in an enormous bale of hay in the zoo, especially for
those accustomed to looking for needles in haystacks. Bales of hay will also be converted into a maze as a gigantic intelligence test for humans! Those readying themselves for the start of the hunting season in September will have the opportunity to listen to experienced Danish hunters and their deerhunting tales. More traditional activities such as feeding the flamingoes, sea-lions, lions and brown bears also take place between 17:00 and 21.15. The evening atmosphere in the zoo stands in contrast to the busy daytime atmosphere and should definitely be experienced. So, why not enjoy a promising evening out in the tranquil Fredriksberg zoo settings? It’s the chance to mingle with a variety of species while sampling cider, rolling oats, planting trees and rummaging through haystacks in search of an elusive zoo pass. PETE STREADER

Saltibarščiai
BY MIHAI BICA
3 medium-sized red beetroots (boiled and peeled) 2 medium-sized cucumbers (peeled and cut into small cubes) 2 green onions (sliced) 2 eggs, hard boiled 4 cups of buttermilk 1 cup of sour cream Fresh dill, chopped Pepper and salt to taste
THE BALTIC summer again, with all its odd caprices, like the luminescent night sky – a feature that is bound to start up conversations between any foreigner and a Dane. Some of my fondest memories from a couple of years back, when I was living in Lithuania, are thanks to this summer sky that never completely turns dark – it’s a seamless passage between the very late sunset and the very early sunrise. For those of you who love waking up to a bright clear sky and the smells and sounds of a waking morning, but also hate having to wake up early in the day, this is just per-
fect because any long night out can end with a romantic sunrise looking out over Øresund. So it may surprise you to know that the Lithuanians have managed to wrap up all of these feelings into a soup. They call it Saltibarščiai, but because any attempt at pronouncing this name would be ridiculous, everybody knows it as the ‘pink soup’, – indeed, the Lithuanians seem proud to have such a distinctive dish representing their cuisine. Serve cold to get that welldeserved sense of freshness after a hot afternoon of cycling – beer and potato wedges are much appreciated side-dishes.

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Cph N; 3535 7535; four-course menu 450kr, seven-course 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you’ll find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it’s well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; five-course menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75215kr; www.reinwalds.dk Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s script-length of choices confronts you at Reinwald’s. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; 1,250kr per person; www.1th.dk 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS
Cap Horn Nyhavn 21, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-00:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-00:00; 3312 8504; starters from 99kr, main courses from 139kr, desserts from 39kr; see www.caphorn.dk for special events Nyhavn, the old harbour, is an idyllic area of magic and hygge what the Danes like to say when referring to anything that is cosy, charming, or delightful: all qualities Cap Horn has in abundance. Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! MM BioMio Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Cph V; open daily 12:00-24:00 (later Fri and Sat), kitchen open 12:00-22:00; 3331 2000; starters 75kr, mains 135kr; www. biomio.dk Located in an old warehouse next to trendy Kødbyen, Bio Mio is certainly unusual for conservative Copenhagen. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. JH SushiTreat Fox Jarmers Plads 3, Cph V; open Mon-Thu 16:30-22:00, Fri-Sat 16:30-24:00 with Club Treat from 22:00-02:00; 3338 7030 The SushiTreat restaurant at the Hotel Fox serves the best California-style sushi in the city, offers an impressive drinks and wine card, and has a completely unique atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights when you can order sushi until 2am while listening to some of the city’s best DJs . the water. The beetroot should then be cooled in the refrigerator for about one hour before you cut them into large pieces. Add buttermilk and sour cream to the water and stir in the grated beetroot, chopped cucumbers and egg whites and the egg yolk paste. Season. After the mixture has been well blended, refrigerate until chilled, and then add chopped dill when ready to serve. The time it takes for it to chill is a perfect excuse to go and shop for already chilled beer and look up those recipes for potato wedges – my personal favourite. Keep in mind though that the choice of side dish is up to each individual, whether the preference is for boiled potatoes, french fries, baked potatoes, or no potatoes at all, in which case I think it is only fair that there should be more beer.

Saxo Cafe Colbjørnsensgade 11, 1652 Cph V; open 11:00-23:00; 3888 8288, www.saxocafe.dk; Chinese buffet 128kr pp, dim sum dishes from 35kr Saxo’s menu is an eclectic and comforting mix of cultures, incorporating Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese buffets, Dim Sum and Vietnamese menus, and traditional Danish fare. With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dim Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. AK Gold Prag Gothersgade 39, 1123 Cph K; open Tue-Wed 17:00-23:30; Thu-Sat 17:00-24:00; SunMon closed; appetisers from 19Kr, mains from 89kr; 3391 4712, www.goldprag.dk Gold Prag has a distinct Austrian, Hungarian, Czech and Polish heritage and lives in a time of its own. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. SC Restaurant Dalaman Vodroffsvej 15, Frederiksberg C; Open daily 16:0024:00; 3322 1231; threecourse menus 119kr, 139kr & 159kr pp; www.dalaman.dk Turkish restaurant Dalaman puts an emphasis on good food and customer satisfaction. EM Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:00-02:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

G13 Wouldn’t feel out of place in any Italian neighbourhood food & drink
Inout | The cph post entertainment guide
24 - 30 August 2012
This is the story of a place that changed my view on neighbourhood restaurants. You see, to me, a neighbourhood restaurant in a big city is a cheap place: an alternative to eating in your flat, where you can be entertained by a familiar waiter. and order a few beers to complement a greasy portion of fries and some pork chops. Well, little did I know, until only recently, that there is a place here in Copenhagen that offers not only the perfect alternative to eating in, but also friendly company, affordable prices and that special something that any enjoyable place must have: a pleasant ambience. I guess this last bit would be hard to put into words without a degree of selfish subjectivity, because ‘pleasant’ is the feeling that we get when something warms us up. In this case, it all started with the name. Lazio, as this restaurant is called, is the name of the Italian region where Rome is located. I thought to myself that this is a genuine Italian restaurant that I will surely enjoy, given all the nice memories that come to my mind when reminiscing about the beautiful Mediterranean peninsula. The setting alone – on the ground floor of a 19th century building very close to Grondal Station and its superb park and residential area – seems to do the trick. With only a few tables inside and about a dozen others beautifully spread about the wide sidewalk that goes around it, there’s a covered window-terrace that lets first the sunshine and then the moonlight reflect upon the wine-filled glasses. Sitting at these tables every summer evening are couples, friends and children spending time with their families, most of whom have been loyal customers for years now, such as the lovely elderly Italian couple I met sitting outside, enjoying a yummy-looking portion of fish and a refined bottle of white wine. Pierot, the waiter, excitedly introduces us when I ask if anybody here speaks Italian, but it transpires that this team of two are from further away across the Mediterranean Sea: Turkey. Still, from the kitchen I can hear the occasional “Signore!” and it emerges that Pierot and Eldo – his boss and colleague, the owner of Lazio Restaurant for more than 20 years now – share their kitchen with an Italian chef who skillfully and amazingly fast cooks anything from lasagne or pizzas to gamberoni alla griglia (some kind of fish), minestrone contadino (some kind of soup), medaglioni al marsala (some kind of meat) or mousse di
The authentic interior of a restaurant that knows ingredients always come first
cioccolato (some kind of wonderful!). I take a seat at a table inside – the chilly summer evenings are still something that my weak immune system has to adapt to – and I order whatever Pierot thinks will suit me best. In between enjoying the buzz that the crowds of people showing up every other minute were creating, savouring the beer that Pierot’s magic hands brought me in almost the same instant I ordered it, and admiring the endless and very impressive collection of wines proudly put on display by Eldo (the avid collector and connoisseur),
Chef has made me a delicious portion of scaloppina gorgonzola. And it tastes even better than it sounds: a couple of thinly cut slices of veal covered in a tasty gorgonzola cheese sauce with a perfectly rounded taste, served alongside tiny baked potatoes and an inspired choice of mixed grilled vegetables. Needless to say, it all goes just fine with the Danish beer that keeps filling my glass, although next time I might want to try some wine. The house wine is changed every couple of months or so, but for a special occasion, you can choose one of the bottles
on display (mostly of Italian origin) – the oldest bottle dates as far back as 1920! And the wide range of grappas is bound to not only make for great appetisers, but also to make the time fly faster than Pierot has to move to dodge a couple of eightyear olds chasing each other, all whilst holding three plates with one hand. So maybe next time you should give the city centre a rest and choose familyfriendly atmosphere instead of a fancy, overly-popular bistro. Buon appetito!

It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s worth a Watch KASPER R GULDBERG
The Watch (15)
Dir: Akiva Schaffer; US comedy, 2012, 102 mins; Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Richard Ayoade, Rosemary DeWitt
Premieres August 23 Playing nationwide
W
HEN I reviewed We Bought a Zoo, the film had been severely criticised because it made running a zoo look like a healthy recreational activity for bored American families. The critique was exacerbated by a real-life tragedy when a zoo-owner from Ohio shot himself after setting loose his collection of lions, tigers, bears and other beasts. To the horror of the public, the police proceeded to shoot each and every exotic pet. Far be it from me to suggest that unnecessary comedies pile up enough bad karma during production to set off some event that seriously challenges their promotion – only The Watch is apparently another example. Originally slated to be entitled Neighborhood Watch, 20th Century Fox opted to pull the posters and re-title the film when, in February, an American teenager was shot to death by a neighbourhood watch co-ordinator − so much for karmic coincidences. It probably wouldn’t be inaccurate to describe The Watch as a joke fest conceived in the imagination of a comicreading, sex-starved adolescent boy who has just discovered beer. Complete with a plot that hardly holds up under scrutiny, it is a banquet of mass-market American slapstick with an emphasis on male bonding, juvenile attitudes to sex, nitwit non sequiturs and sardonic violence. There are orgies and aliens, beer and peeing (in a clear hat-tip to the cop scene in Dumb & Dumber),
The boys didn’t really grasp the concept when Scaffer asked them to line up in order of height neon green slime and guns. There is also an obsession with male genitals. Disturbingly enough, it forms a kind of sub-theme with some bearing on the plot. But not to worry, I’ll get to this flick’s potentially redeeming elements in due course. Evan Troutwig (Stiller), the grounded and community-orientated manager of a Costco in Glenview, Ohio, decides to take action when his night watchman is found killed and, even more disturbingly, skinned and covered in green slime. The local cop (Will Forte from Saturday Night Live) ignores the hair-raising details and gets nowhere,
which compels ‘the Evanator’ to recruit what turns out to be three absolutely worthless boneheads in the shape of Vaughn (Wedding Crashers), Hill (Moneyball) and Ayoade (The IT Crowd). Unfit for sleuthing and vigilante work, what this pathetic crew are really looking for is male company: Hill’s rather hilarious character is still living with his mom while Ayoade needs a wingman as much as he does an Asian milf. Naturally, the road to discovering the murderer’s true and extra-terrestrial identity is paved with a lot of jackass stunts, awkward bromance moments, situational misfires and the like. There
are a few almost-scary and quite steamy scenes, too. Working from a script by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad and The Pineapple Express), it is directed by Akiva Schaffer (Hot Rod) whom you may also know as a writer for Saturday Night Live. To their credit, they were saddled with Shawn Levy who wrote the nauseatingly Disney-esque comedy Mr Popper’s Penguins, as a co-writer, so it’s not a surprise it ended up a Farrelly Brothers-like cross between Ghostbusters with aliens and Attack the Block, a 2011 British film about a group of teenagers who decide to strike back
when their city is on the receiving end of an interplanetary invasion. The bottom line is that although it’s pretty much all formula, you do laugh – and more than a few times. There is something about Stiller’s deadpan delivery that (miraculously) still works, and something about the jokes that, if you’re in that mood, makes for perfectly acceptable entertainment. Taking its dude-ensemble cues from the comparable Horrible Bosses, this plethora of cookie-cutter gags has absolutely no substance – but funny is not necessarily about substance. It’s about letting go as well.
Is Soderbergh taking magic mushrooms? Magic Mike (15)
Dir: Steven Soderbergh; US comedy, 2012, 110 mins; Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Mathew McConaughey Premieres August 23 Playing nationwide
W ... and they thought they were going to see Singing in the Rain
HILE THE film is entertaining throughout, it leaves one feeling unsatisfied. Enjoy it for what it is − a guilty pleasure film for those who are attracted to the male form in its most perfect state. Beyond that and you’re asking for too much. Magic Mike tells the story
of the wonderful world of male stripping in Tampa, Florida. One performer, Mike (Tatum), recruits another into the world of easy money and easy women. Naturally, there’s partying and the serious stuff, interspersed with dance moves and strip teases. Tatum is very good at what he does. His dance sequences show off real talent in that area, and while we presume Tatum would be great at stripping, since he actually was a stripper prior to becoming a Hollywood A-lister, he exceeds expectations. Tatum is likeable and he plays the good guy well enough, but as a character, Mike is flat and one-dimensional. His eventual story arc is
minimal and cliché. The rest of the characters have even less in terms of development. That being said, McConaughey was born to play the role of Dallas, the former stripper turned business owner (he owns the strip club). This type of film would never win Oscars, but if it did, it would go to McConaughey. The dance sequences are both entertaining and skillfully choreographed, short enough that they do not drag on and frequent enough that the film remains entertaining for its duration. But the relationships in between the dancing lack emotional substance. These kinds of films typically
reinforce the stereotype of corrupt lifestyles and how bad they are. Unfortunately, this film is no exception. What goes up must come down, as they say. However, in Magic Mike, the things that go wrong seem not to be that big a deal. The consequences are muted and nothing ever seems to unnerve the ever-calm Mike. The result is a plot without impact or true meaning. Steven Soderbergh’s direction brings a serious touch and some serious credit to the film. Regrettably, there was only so much Soderbergh could accomplish with the film’s seemingly subpar script. LIZ DELLAPENNA

New this Week That’s My Boy (11) Dir: Sean Anders; US comedy, 2012, 116 mins; Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester, Susan Sarandon, James Caan, Milo Ventimiglia After last year’s horrific Jack and Jill, you would think Adam Sandler would give the caricature comedy genre a rest. Yet, here he is, donning an overgrown wig and his most exaggerated Brooklyn accent to give it one more go. SNL comedy it-boy Andy Samberg does his best to add life to this tragically unfunny film, but he would have done better to avoid it entirely. LL
Book Your Tickets The Dark Knight Rises (11) Dir: Christopher Nolan; US action, 2012, 165 mins; Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Marion Cotillard, Anne Hathaway With the arrival of Bane (Hardy), a terrorist hell-bent on ‘liberating’ Gotham before reducing it to rubble, Batman (Bale) is forced out of exile to once again take on the role as Gotham’s Dark Knight. Nolan retains the delicate balance of building a credible reality while remaining respectful to the comic book origins, and as he departs from the Batman franchise he leaves his reputation as a master filmmaker and the general state of comic book cinema in the best shape they’ve ever been. MW
Martha Marcy May Marlene (15) Dir: Sean Durkin; US thriller, 2011, 112 mins; Elizabeth Olsen, Sarah Paulsen, Hugh Dancy Watch a brilliantly underplayed Olsen give her debut in this instant cult-status masterpiece directed by Sean Durkin. When Martha (Olsen) escapes from a hippie cult and finds her way back to her sister, her recovery is neither simple nor swift. It will leave you questioning the level of manipulation we all tolerate in our everyday lives. MW
Avoid like the Plague The Bourne Legacy (15) Dir: Tony Gilroy; US action, 2012, 135 mins; Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Stacey Keach When a ten-year-old passport photo has the second most screen-time after the lead actor, the film holds little promise. No other franchise entry works this hard to justify its own existence, the irony being that a decent action film is justified by decent action – of which Bourne Legacy has little. AS
Total Recall (11) Dir: Len Wiseman; US/Can sci-fi/action, 2012, 121 mins, Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, Bill Nighy This grossly miscast sci-fi reboot is a soulless affair with a handful of neat visual ideas that are
inconsistently executed by a director who, by aping giants like Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg, only succeeds in placing emphasis on his own inadequacies. MW
LOL (3) Dir: Lisa Azuelos; US comedy, 2012, 97 mins; Miley Cyrus, Demi Moore, Ashley Greene, Adam Sevani If a film begins with an American teenager talking about her high school and walking out in slow-motion, arm in arm with her bffs – you can put your expectations to rest. This flick has nothing new to offer, whether it’s teenage broken hearts, hooking up in summer camp, a battle of the bands, school trips to Paris, parties and pot. MH
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (15) Dir: Timur Bekmambetov; US fantasy/horror, 2012, 105 mins; Benjamin Walker, Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead This so-called film is nothing but a thinly veiled marketing fad from Hollywood’s whoremongers, a stick of quick-melting chewing gum for an ADD generation. Avoid at all costs. AS
Step Up: Revolution (7) Dir: Scott Speer; US romance, 2012, 103 mins; Adam G Sevani, Chadd Smith, Kathryn McCormick, Ryan Guzman The fourth installment of the
Step Up franchise is exactly what you would expect it to be – a bombastic dance show interrupted sporadically with godawful acting, cringeworthy dialogue and a ridiculous plot. LL
Also Playing Take This Waltz (11) Dir: Sarah Polley; Can romance, 2011, 116 mins; Michelle Williams, Seth Rogan, Luke Kirby, Sarah Silverman This cute hipster romcom is gorgeously shot and skillfully acted, though not quite cute enough to forgive the cringeworthy cookie cutter title. KG
To Rome with Love (3) Dir: Woody Allen; US/ Ita comedy, 2012, 102 mins; Woody Allen, Alison Pill, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Alec Baldwin, Penelope Cruz, Ellen Page, Roberto Benigni This film may not be a reinvention of the Woody wheel, but compared with most romcoms out this summer, it is almost a masterpiece. MW
Albert Nobbs(7) Dir: Rodrigo Garcia; UK/ Ireland drama, 2012, 113 mins; Glenn Close, John Banville, Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson, Brendan Gleeson Though Glenn Close shines in the title role, the conventional structure and didactic plot will
leave you counting the minutes while hoping to be surprised before events unfold, all too often, as predicted. Albert Nobbs is not without an audience, but it’s far more likely to find it on primetime television than in selected cinemas. MW
La Délicatesse (7) Dir: David Foenkinos & Stéphane Foenkinos; Fra romance, 2012, 108 mins; Audrey Tautou, Francois Damiens, Joséphone de Meaux Despite some shining moments, including an excellent leading man and a tastefully underused Parisian backdrop, this French rom-com remains above average but not outstanding. Audrey Tautou is her usual self, looking confused and exhausted most of the time, while other actors are criminally underused. FP
Weekend (11) Dir: Andrew Haigh; UK drama, 2011, 96 mins; Tom Cullen, Chris New, Jonathan Race, Laura Freeman Andrew Haigh’s second feature moves away from the potential pigeon-holing of gay-themed cinema and towards a universal terrain of desire, hope and disappointment. It occasionally edges towards the clichés of romantic comedy, however the director deftly steers clear of a crowd-pleasing easy-option resolution, and keeps the film rooted in a reality that squarely and knowingly avoids being larger than life and instead focuses on the quirks and textures of contemporary British life. AS
G19
The Amazing Spider-Man (11) Dir: Marc Webb; US action, 2012, 136 mins; Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field Webb’s reinterpretation of Spider-Man is a little premature, but the movie holds its own with a fresh script and a talented cast. Here’s a Spider-Man the girls will actually want to sleep with! LD
Free the Mind (11) Dir: Phie Ambo; Den doc, 2012, 82 mins; Richard Davidson Danish documentary following Dr Richard Davidson, the world’s leading brain scientist, as he attempts to teach three traumatised individuals how to change their personality through meditation. Thought-provoking with shining moments, though a scattered focus makes it too messy to fully enjoy. LL
Snow White and the Huntsman (11) Dir: Rupert Sanders; UK/ US action, 2012, 127 mins; Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Ian McShane In a twist to the fairy tale, the huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to kill her winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen. But unfortunately, this overlong retelling of a Grimm fairy tale is short on magic. MH

TV2 Zulu, Sun 12:00
HOPEFULLY you’ve got a recorder, because TV2 Zulu, in all its infinite wisdom, has decided to show the whole of Awake in one go. It’s a strange decision given that this is the Danish premiere and that it only aired a few months ago in the US. Jason Isaacs is a cop trapped in two existences: one in which his wife died and another where it was his son. And he doesn’t even stop working. With different partners in each reality, he is able to cross the dots and use his double life to solve cases. Its Metacritic score reflects a division of the critics, between those who loved its emotive and intriguing premise, and those who felt it was too complex for US audiences. It was. Viewers
fell from six to two million and there will not be a second series. Equally challenging is All watched over by machines of loving grace (DR2, Mon-Wed 23:00), a three-part doc that questions whether computers have “distorted and simplified our view of the world around us”. The Guardian enjoyed a “fun ride that bombards you in waves and leaves you feeling bewildered and a little bit giddy”. Elsewhere, British cop series Line of Duty (DR1, Wed 22:00) goes into internal affairs territory and has its moments; the timely British doc Inside Incredible Athletes (DR2, Tue 19:55) provides fascinating insights into the Paralympics; there’s another chance to see the
acclaimed drama series Homeland (SV1, Sat 22:45), gory doc series Blood And Guts - A History of Surgery (DRK, Mon 22:05), and riveting sports doc Senna (DR2, Tue 20:45); Infamous Assassinations (DRK, Mon 21:40) tackles the failed attempt on Ronald Reagan in TV2 Zulu, Sun 12:00 Awake 1981; Buck (SV1, Tue 21:00) is about the horse whisperer who inspired the Robert Redford movie; docudrama Van Gogh: Painted with Words (DRK, Sat 21:30) stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead; Inside Mad Men (SV2, Fri 20:00) is a treat for fans of the show; and finally, Skavlan möter Justin Bieber has the makings of an absolute classic.
