China will advance the Belt and Road Initiative, increase access to its domestic market – including the services sector – enhance Intellectual Property Right protection and try out free trade ports. China, with a more open gesture, will uphold the win-win co-operation principle which has long been the philosophy of life for the Chinese people in welcoming all other countries including Denmark to catch the "express train" of China's development.

Chinese diplomacy in the new era – our most recent accomplishments

OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS, China has made diplomatic progress on all fronts. We have pursued major goals on a country level, but with Chinese characteristics, thus advancing the diplomatic agenda in a comprehensive, multilevel, multifaceted way and creating a favourable external environment for development. China has jointly pursued the Belt and Road Initiative, initiated the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, set up the Silk Road Fund, and hosted the First Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, the 22nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, the G20 2016 Summit in Hangzhou, the BRICS Summit in Xiamen, and the Fourth Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia. China champions the development of a community with a shared future for mankind, and has encouraged the evolution of the global governance system. With this we have seen a further rise in China’s international influence, ability to inspire, and power to shape; the country has made several new valuable contributions to global peace and development. We have actively developed global partnerships and expanded our convergence of interests with other countries. China is committed to promoting co-ordination and co-operation with other major countries and working to build a framework for international relations featuring overall stability and balanced development. We will deepen relations with our neighbours in accordance with the principles of amity, sincerity, mutual benefit, and inclusiveness and the policy of forging friendship and partnerships with its neighbours. Guided by the principle of upholding justice while pursuing shared interests and the principle of sincerity, real results, affinity, and good faith, China will work to strengthen solidarity and co-operation with other developing countries. We will strengthen exchanges and co-operation with the political

parties and organisations of other countries, and encourage People’s Congresses, CPPCC committees, the military, local governments, and people’s organisations to engage in exchanges with other countries.

MAJOR-COUNTRY DIPLOMACY WITH CHINESE CHARACTERISTICS Over the past five years, President Xi Jinping has been in the forefront, offering great insights into the changes in the global situation, planning and creating projects personally – as well as providing a series of new ideas, new initiatives and new strategies on how to manage the new diplomatic reality. This serves as a strong guide to China's diplomacy in such a new situation. President Xi Jinping has also personally visited more than 50 countries worldwide, as well as presiding over and attending all kinds of important multilateral forums. During some critical periods he has made China's voice heard and put forward Chinese proposals, thus demonstrating by his leadership that China truly is a major power. Under the auspices of Xi Jinping's Thoughts on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, China has already explored a path of major international diplomacy with Chinese characteristics, showing a distinctive Chinese style and manner. Over the past five years, we have implemented the important concepts put forward by President Xi Jinping, such as

developing state-to-state relations through communication and partnerships rather than confrontation. Through this, a global partnership network has been built up. China has advanced the "Belt and Road" initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping and made this important initiative the largest international co-operation platform in the world and the most popular international public product. In accordance with the outlook on development, security, civilization and governance put forward by President Xi Jinping, we have taken the initiative to tackle various global challenges and become the most dynamic and active force in the process of global governance. Over the past five years, China has demonstrably driven the international agenda as never before, enlarging its remit to drive international rule-making and becoming increasingly influential in international affairs. All this has demonstrated China's enormous strides in international status and influence. The diplomatic achievements of the past five years have proved that Chinese Communists not only have the confidence and ability to build their own country, but can also progress the common development of all countries. We've seen that China can not only provide its own brand of wisdom for a better social system for mankind, but can also suggest a new path for all developing countries towards modernisation. And this is the most essential and meaningful result of China's diplomacy, as it shows itself to be a major country but without losing sight of its Chinese characteristics.

COMMUNITY WITH A SHARED FUTURE FOR MANKIND

In late March 2013, Xi Jinping first referred to the concept of a community with a shared future mankind. Since then, at a series of bilateral and multilateral occasions, he has frequently stressed the importance of the concept. November 2017 marks the fifth anniversary of China initiating the idea. China does not only advocate the concept but also implements it in practice. A series of core policies launched by the Chinese government have embodied this idea and blazed a new trail for the reform of global governance. Firstly, China has taken practical measures in response to the anti-globalisation tide and injected new impetus into economic globalisation. Secondly, China will provide the example of its own development experience to enrich global governance. The past 40 years of reform and the opening up of the country have proved that China has successfully developed a model that underdeveloped countries can follow to catch up with developed ones. Thirdly, China has provided public institutions and infrastructure for the good of the international community. In addition to the Belt and Road Initiative, China has also created other organs such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the New Development Bank it co-founded with other BRICS countries. Fourthly, China is pushing forward the democratisation of global governance. Finally, China is playing its role as a responsible major power. During the global climate change negotiations, China made a series of commitments capping the volume of carbon emission, playing a crucial role in the signing of the 2015 Paris Agreement.

NEW CONTRIBUTIONS AND NEW ACCOMPLISHMENTS Under the guidance of Xi Jinping's Thoughts on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, China’s diplomacy will answer the call of the new era. President Xi Jinping has proposed a broader vision of the world, a keener sense of international responsibility and more progressive diplomacy; It's a matter of making new contributions as well as new accomplishments. As for the new contributions, five points can be stressed: Firstly, the continuous development of socialism with Chinese characteristics will provide a new path for the modernisation of developing countries, and offer Chinese solutions to the problems facing mankind – as well as Chinese wisdom in search of a better social system. Secondly, the development of socialist democracy and the promotion of a path to

political development with Chinese characteristics will contribute oriental wisdom to the progress of political civilisation for mankind. Thirdly, China advances the “Belt and Road” initiative in an all-round way and establishes a new platform for international co-operation to realise common development goals and prosperity with various countries. Fourthly, China breaks new ground in pursuing an opening up on all fronts and opens its doors even wider. This will provide the international community with new opportunities to deepen mutually beneficial co-operation with China. And fifthly, China promotes an economic system that facilitates green, low-carbon and circular development for the sake of harmonious coexistence between man and nature – all things which will play a major guiding role for the construction of a global eco-civilisation.

China’s Economy:

a more open China benefits all

DURING THE FIRST NINE MONTHS of 2017, China's GDP increased by 6.9 percent (0.2 percent higher than 2016), through better quality and increased efficiency. The overall economy has exhibited steady progress. The supply of agricultural products is abundant; CPI remains basically stable; industrial growth, corporate profits, imports and exports and investment have stabilized

and rebounded; consumption and the service industry are contributing more to economic growth. As the second largest economy in the world, the GDP of China is now more than USD 10 trillion. The increment from 6.9 percent growth is even higher than that from double-digit growth before, and equal to the size of a middleincome country.

Meanwhile China is fully aware of its responsibility. Over the past five years, China has taken proactive steps to adapt to, manage and steer the new normal of its economy and has deepened supply-side structural reform. As a result, China's economy has maintained steady performance. Since 2013, China's economy has grown by 7.2 percent annually on average, contributing over 30 percent of global growth. China is now a main driver powering global growth.

THE REFORMS ARE PAYING OFF Through comprehensive reform, China has worked hard to remove the systematic institutional barriers that have impeded development. As many as 360 major reform initiatives and more than 1,500 reform measures have been carried out. Breakthroughs have been made in key areas, and general frameworks for reform have been put in place in major sectors. China has sped up efforts to build the new institutions of the open economy and transform models of foreign trade and outbound investment to continue the shift from quantitative to qualitative improvement. It is particularly worth noting that China is pursuing a people-centred philosophy of development to make its development more inclusive and beneficial to all. Individual income has registered sustained growth, outpacing GDP growth for many years. Income gaps between urban and rural areas and among different regions have been narrowed, middle-income group are expanding, and the Gini coefficient is dropping. More than 13 million new urban jobs have been created every year for four consecutive years. Significant advances have been made in pursuing

green development, resulting in considerable reductions in energy and resource consumption and remarkable environmental improvements. Over the last five years, decisive progress has been made in the fight against poverty. China has lifted more than 60 million people out of poverty. The poverty headcount ratio has declined, and per capita rural income in poor areas has maintained double-digit growth. This has not come easily, and China is proud of what has been achieved in poverty alleviation.

WHAT NEXT FOR CHINA? Looking into the future, China's economy has massive potential. The country intends to advance structural adjustment and cultivate new momentum for development through promoting opening-up, reforms and innovation. In the next 15 years, China will gain an even larger market share worldwide and undergo further comprehensive development. It is estimated that China will import 24 trillion USD worth of goods, attract 2 trillion USD in direct foreign investment, and earn 2 trillion USD from outbound investment. In November 2018, China will hold the first China International Import Expo in Shanghai,

which will provide a new platform for expanding co-operation between China and other countries. China's market will be more and more open in the future. That is bound to bring more business opportunities to enterprises from all countries – including Denmark.

New momentum for Chinese-Danish co-operation in research and innovation Bilateral co-operation in research and innovation has contributed a lot to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between China and Denmark. The inauguration of the new building of the Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research (SDC) in Beijing and Denmark’s participation as country of honour in the Pujiang Innovation Forum 2017 has highlighted the increasing bilateral co-operation in research and innovation. The last five years have seen frequent ministerial visits and meetings focusing on research and innovation. The 19th session of the ChinaDenmark Joint Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation was held in Copenhagen in April 2016, hosted by the Chinese minister for science and technology Mr Wan Gang and the Danish minister for higher education and science. Regarding each other as important partners in research and innovation, both countries agreed that there is great potential that should be tapped´further. In September 2017, the Ministry of Science and Technology of P. R. China (MoST) and Innovation Fund Denmark signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on co-operation in science, technology and innovation, which prioritises co-operation in biotechnology, medicine and health care, agricultural and food technology, renewable energy, environmental technology, circular economy, ICT and Arctic research. Co-operative activities include scientific seminars, workshops, exchanges of scientists, the training of young talents, exchange and sharing of research facilities and information and joint R&D projects. The ChinaDanish joint research programme, sponsored by MoST and the Innovation Fund Denmark (previously known as the Danish Council for Strategic Research) has funded eighteen bilateral research projects in new energy, smart grid and energy efficiency.

JOINT PUBLICATIONS AND APPOINTMENTS The number of of scientific publications co-authored by Chinese and Danish researchers is increasing rapidly. With funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Danish National Research Foundation, ten Sino-Danish research centres (also know as centres of excellence) have been established and hosted by several major Chinese and Danish universities as well as the Chinese Academy of Sciences ( CAS). The past five years have seen the election of the Danish scientists Prof. Flemming Besenbacher as a foreign member of CAS and Prof. Preben Terndrup Pedersena as a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). The Chinese scientist Yang Huanming has been appointed as a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters.

CO-OPERATION ON GREEN ISSUES Research and innovation co-operation has greatly benefited the green transition of the two nations – and the world. As a partner country of the Danish-initiated Global Green Growth Forum (3GF), China has successfully co-operated with Denmark on green growth and sustainable development goals. There are strong collaborations in the water and environmental sectors. The China-European Water Platform, with its secretariats in Beijing and Copenhagen, has initiated many multilateral and bilateral projects. With the funding and technical support of the Danish government, China has established the China National Renewable Energy Center. An array of demonstration projects have been implemented, focusing on co-operation in wind energy, thermal power plant flexibility, green heating, energy efficiency and more. The visit to Denmark by the Chinese energy administrator Mr. Nur Bekri in September 2017 has given the bilateral energy co-operation a new momentum. MORE R&D AS WELL The increasing amount of R&D investment fromChinese companies in Denmark is remarkable, especially in the local high-tech industries. Huanwei, BGI, Goldwind and other Chinese companies have all started business in Denmark, with some setting up local R&D centres. Continuing the trend of increasing mutual investment, a new business incubator, the Innovation House China-Denmark, has been established in Copenhagen with partners from both countries, such as the City of Copenhagen, Copenhagen Capacity, Vækstfabrikkerne, Hansong Technology, Beijing Inhope Investment and Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute. The 19th CPC National Congress that convened in Beijing in October 2017 has ushered in a new era for China, with more ambitious development goals and plans. With innovation-driving strategy and the aspiration to build a prosperous and beautiful China, the co-operation between China and Denmark in the research and innovation arena is expected to be greatly strengthened during the coming years – and in the future.

– forging ahead on a stable development path SOUTHWEST CHINA'S TIBET AUTONOMOUS REGION has seen great advances and stability over the past five years and is expected to progress even further thanks to its development path with Chinese characteristics. In 2016, The GDP of Tibet Autonomous Region reached 114.8 billion yuan (16.5 billion USD), achieving an 11.5 percent growth and the 24th straight year of double-digit growth. The figures show a good momentum of economic growth of Tibet in the context of world economic downturn. In 2016, TAR's fixed asset investment increased by 20 percent, amounting to 161 billion yuan. The per capita disposable income of urban and rural residents reached 27,857 yuan and 9,316 yuan respectively. The plateau played host to over 23 million tourists, which provided a total revenue of 33 billion yuan and helped provide jobs for more than 97,000 farmers and herdsmen. In addition, various measures were taken by the central and regional government to alleviate poverty and improve people’s livelihoods. More than 130,000 people on the plateau escaped from poverty. Since 2012, Tibet has made great progress in constructing infrastructure including roads, power, water and communications that all brought energy to the economic and social

development of the region, the Xinhua News Agency reported in September 2017. A total of 739 kilometres of highway have been built or are under construction in the region. A large new hydro-electric power station and airports have been constructed during the past five years. The per capita disposable income of rural residents in Tibet reached 9,316 yuan (1,416 USD) in 2016, a 13 percent increase compared with the same period in 2015, according to data released by the autonomous government in February. During the 12th Five-Year Plan, 2.6 billion yuan was invested in public cultural projects in Tibet. The region has been actively working on international communication to present the image of a "socialist new Tibet" to the world. This has created a stable international environment for the reform and development of Tibet. Over the past five years, Tibet has also maintained harmonious and stable conditions regarding religious and ethnic issues. The autonomous Communist Party Commission has improved the management of 1,787 temples in Tibet since 2012, promoting and leading religious groups to love the country and Buddhism, the Tibet Daily reported on Tuesday. An annual fund of 26 million yuan is provided to lamas and nuns in Tibet for social insurance.

CONSOLIDATING AND DEVELOPING THE PATRIOTIC UNITED FRONT China is a multi-ethnic country. The united front is an important way to ensure the success of the country’s development, and we will maintain commitment to it long term. We will uphold the banner of patriotism and socialism, strive to achieve great unity and solidarity, balance commonality and diversity, and expand common ground and the convergence of interests. In handling its relationships with other Chinese political parties, the Communist Party of China is guided by the principles of long-term coexistence, mutual oversight, sincerity, and sharing the rough times and the smooth, and it supports these parties in performing their duties in accordance with the requirements of the Chinese socialist system for their participation in governance. We will fully implement the Party’s policies concerning ethnic groups, heighten public awareness of ethnic unity and progress, and create a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation. We will encourage more exchanges and interactions among different ethnic groups, helping them remain closely united like the seeds of a pomegranate that stick together, and work jointly for common prosperity and development. We will fully implement the Party’s basic policy on religious affairs, uphold the principle that religions in China must be Chinese in orientation and provide active guidance to religions so that they can adapt themselves to socialist society.

Cultur al events during Chinese New Ye ar AS ONE OF THE BIGGEST CELEBRATIONS co-held by Chinese Embassy in Denmark and Ministry of Culture of China, ‘Happy Chinese New Year’ is an influential cultural brand created by Ministry of Culture of China in 2010, which is quite popular around the world now. In 2017, over 2000 programs had been staged in more than 500 cities in 140 countries and regions, reaching 280 million people all around the world and in 2018 the number of programs around the world will be slight increased, and the Happy Chinese New Year Performance 2018 in Denmark is one of those bright celebrations. Since 2002, celebrations for the Chinese New Year have been launched in Denmark for 16 years. Performances by professional art troupes from China touring around Denmark during Chinese New Year are major events for ‘Happy Chinese New Year’ in Denmark and have been well-received by Danish audience. The year of 2018 marks the 10th anniversary of China-Denmark comprehensive strategic partnership. As the first big event of the year, ‘Happy Chinese New Year’ 2018 will be the first celebration for this special occasion.

Performance of the year 2018 in Denmark will be put on by Jilin Province art troupe which excels at group dancing and traditional Chinese instruments. The dancing group of Jilin Province art troupe is a prestigious team in China which has participated in many important cultural events and been awarded various prizes. Their works combine traditional Chinese dancing style with culture of local people and minority groups, and thereby providing the audience with unique esthetic and cultural experience. Four musicians of four traditional Chinese instruments, namely, Chinese Zither, Dulcimer, Lute and Flute will join the Jilin Province art troupe, presenting typical Chinese melody to Danish audience. Cosponsored by Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to the Kingdom of Denmark with the local governments of Ballerup, Helsingør, Horsens, Kolding, Sønderborg, and Aarhus, the Friendship Association Denmark-China, and Music Confucius Institute in Denmark, the Jilin Province Art Troupe will perform in Copenhagen, Ballerup, Helsingør, Horsens, Kolding, Sønderborg, and Aarhus during 20-28 January 2018.

Another major event during the Chinese New Year is the ‘Lightenup Copenhagen’ which will be held during Jan. 16- February 12. Aiming to create joyful atmosphere of Chinese New Year during the dark winter time of Denmark, together with KBH K and Wonderful Copenhagen, Chinese Embassy will co-hold a series of cultural activities and hanging colorful Chinese style lanterns on Strøget street and in the shops alongside the street(January 16- February 12).

The FU (Lucky) Shopping Festival (January 16- February 12) is one of the main events of the ‘Lighten-up Copenhagen’. During the FU (Lucky) Shopping Festival, people can go to certain shops alongside the pedestrian streets of Copenhagen to get intriguing Red Envelops with Chinese character FU on the surface and discount vouchers inside. According to Chinese tradition, turning the character FU upside down conveys the meaning that good luck will be brought to you for the whole year.

Niels Steensens Gymnasium Chinese classes for all students in primary school and a Chinese study programme in high school Niels Steensens Gymnasium (NSG) is a private school with a primary and a high school section. Students are admitted from the 6th. grade (approxiately age 12). NSG is part of a worldwide network of Jesuit schools with more than 2 million students from high schools and primary schools in more than 69 countries. All are characterized by Catholic values, a high professional standard and development of students to become “men and women for others”.

Chinese culture is of special importance for NSG as a Jesuit school. The Jesuits were present in China in the 16th century and made significant contributions to the exchange of science and culture between East and West. Inspired by their work, and in order to provide the students with the best qualifications, everybody in primary school attend Chinese classes. We are proud to say, that our school is among the most experienced in Denmark in teaching Chinese and that we are the Danish school with the highest number of Chinese-language students.

INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES

The NSG high school section offers Chinese at both basic and advanced levels. Additionally, in cooperation with the Confucius Institute at Copenhagen Business School (CBS), we offer a course that includes Chinese A, social science A and mathematics B and an exchange program with The High School Affiliated with Renmin University in Beijing.

The students take part in study tours and are invited to visit some of NSG’s partner schools in Germany and France. In addition, they may participate in two-week exchange programs at schools in Kentucky and Ohio during the 2nd year in high school.

The teaching takes place in Danish. However, NSG has considerable experience in teaching students of non-Danish origin.

The larger world in which we live is an important part of the NSG profile. The students are exposed to the international dimension in all subjects, but also by interacting with teachers and staff from many different countries. In addition, the students have diverse national, religious and cultural backgrounds.

During the summer vacation preceding the 3rd year in high school, students are selected for participation in Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. and New York City where students from around the world develop leadership and management skills based on dialogue and international understanding.

The Chinese Spring Festival

THE SPRING FESTIVAL is the Chinese New Year in the lunar calendar. It is commonly referred to as ‘Guo Nian’ (meaning 'spending the New Year'). Falling on the first day of the first lunar month, often one month later than the Gregorian calendar, the Spring Festival is the most ceremonial and joyfully celebrated traditional festival in Chinese folk culture. It is also regarded as an intangible part of the cultural heritage of China. In China, the four seasons of the year are subdivided into 24 solar periods. Farmers sow and reap in accordance with these solar periods. When the Chinese New Year comes, it signals the coming of springtime and the beginning of another cycle of sowing and reaping. People naturally welcome this festival with joyful singing and dancing.

People born in the Year of the Dog are supposed to be friendly, faithful, and have a strong sense of responsibility. When the Spring Festival approaches, people in China try to return home in order to spend the festival with parents and family members and pay tribute to their ancestors. On New Year’s Eve, the whole family will then get together for the most important meal of the year. Every year, approximately 1 billion Chinese people will make the journey for the homecoming. With rich New Year's food on the table, including Jiaozi (dumplings) which are indispensable to the Spring Festival, the whole family will enjoy the reunion, engage in pleasant conversation and share the beautiful prospects for the coming new year.

As a significant part of Chinese traditional culture, the twelve Chinese signs of the zodiac are composed of the national totem, the Dragon, and eleven other animals from the natural world. Also known as the ‘animal zodiac’, it is an ancient Chinese zodiac cycle encompassing twelve years, following the signs of Rat, Cow, Tiger, Hare, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig in succession. The year of 2018 is the Year of Dog, which starts from 16 February 2018. In Chinese culture, the dog is the symbol of loyalty and honesty.

On the very first morning of the new year, firecrackers are set off as soon as the door is opened in order to invite good luck. Afterwards, the ground looks like a carpet of brocade because it is covered with red fragments from the exploded firecrackers. This phenomenon is called ‘Full House Red’.Temple festivities and celebrations are held on the streets or in the parks. The whole apartment block will be shrouded in an auspicious atmosphere, with plenty of jubilation lasting until the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. In addition to traditional folk activities in celebration of the Spring Festival, among other things Chinese people have recently developed such activities as travelling, planting trees and watching movies in order to spend a healthy, fashionable and environmentally-friendly New Year.
