BEN HAMILTON
Watching Roman Polanski’s Macbeth as a 14-year-old made a big impression on me. It was one of those lessons where the teacher, most probably hungover, put a video on, and straightaway I could tell this was a proper movie, not a steady-cam of some actors in a studio. The teacher really perked up - a diversionary tactic to use his hipflask probably - during the scene in which MacDuff’s family are butchered to remind us how Polanski’s own wife was slaughtered by the Manson Family barely 12 months before. That really shook us up – it was only later we realised he wasn’t talking about the Partridge Family. In hindsight, I think he was probably a paedophile. Not Polanski, the teacher. Oh, hang on … My point is that Polanski’s Macbeth is brilliant. It’s gory, inventive (an entire scene is shot from behind the eyes of Macbeth’s decapitated head), psychedelic, and even includes a cameo from Keith Chegwin. So I’ve always given other adaptations short shrift. “You’re going to
kill the king … big yawn”; even on stage the play seems stifled and constrained. But all that changed when I heard that ADG Europe are performing the play in the grounds of a castle (see G2 for details). Suddenly, the play has new promise. The Macbeths plotting, writhing against the stone walls; the final climatic scenes on the castle’s battlements, as Macbeth, convinced he cannot die, brazenly defies an entire army; a hundredweight of beef doubling as the Thane of Cawdor being hung from the portcullis – the possibilities are endless. Funnily enough, only last week Ian Burns – whose new play, The Zoo Story, is scheduled to start in October - was saying how he’d love to stage Macbeth at Kronborg Castle and get the audience to follow the action around the grounds. Elsewhere this week, we’ve got Sunday’s Ecco walkathon and Saturday’s Open Water (see G3; there are more details regarding the swimming in the ‘Coming Up Soon’ section on page 13 of the newspaper), and an awful lot of stories lamenting the end of summer. We hope that isn’t the case and that Macbeth doesn’t turn into The Tempest halfway through. It wouldn’t be that far away from Prospero murdering Macduff’s family in the style of the Partridge Family.
Rosenborg Slot Gardens, Øster Volgade 4A, 1350 Cph K; starts Thu (Sep 1), ends Sep 3, daily performances at 18:00; Adults: 220kr, concessions 110kr; www. adg-europe.com “When shall we three meet again / In thunder, lightning, or in rain?” whisper voices from afar. When you hear those very words, you are in the courtyard of an ancient castle, perhaps even witnessing a tempest in the sky. A story unfolds, one that has crossed centuries and touched many souls. You hear a vague “Macbeth”, and finally remember that you are sitting outside the imposing Rosenborg Castle, not too far away from the city centre, in contemporary Copenhagen. This episode is what awaits you if you decide to embark on the great Shakespearean journey that is Macbeth. The American Drama Group Europe is bringing the author’s most controversial character to life in the courtyard of Rosenborg Castle as part of a three-day stopover on its Castle Tour, a tradition established in 1995 that see the group perform plays at revered European landmarks. When it comes to soaking up the words of England’s literary giant, the setting is ideal. Macbeth’s ambitious and tormented soul is likely to leave traces on the walls of the beautiful Dutch renaissance-style castle, commissioned by Christian IV to be his summer residence, or in the hearts of those longing for things remote. The magic and intricacy of the play, with its violence and its monologues, should bring about the strange feeling of travelling into a parallel world with strangers in the intimacy of the night. Established in 1980, the company has developed a reputation as one of the most established touring theatres in the world - it performed in over 30 countries in 2008 alone. Its philosophy is simple: theatre is for the public, and can be played everywhere to anyone. With that in mind, TNT has been arranging diverse projects in even more diverse settings – from Moby Dick to works by Paul Auster, from ruined plantation houses to cultural hubs like Tokyo or Berlin. The company’s work has received international acclaim for its colourful style and approachable delivery, being described in the Guardian as “one of the most interesting developments on the British theatrical scene”, while the South

China Morning Post considered it “touring theatre at its best”. According to Paul Stebbings, artistic director of TNT and ADGE, the same appeal is true of this year’s Macbeth, which “is not afraid to unleash the power of Shakespeare’s dark masterpiece”. The story of the great Macbeth is explored through electronic music, human sound and acrobatic dance performances. Stebbings’ witches are neither man nor woman, but a source of dramatic energy that fills the air, is embodied in shamans and wild forest spirits, before eventually penetrating Lady Macbeth’s soul. And while the play is inhabited by this dark energy, the porter scene stands out thanks to a comic and unexpected delivery.
The play has encountered a positive response worldwide and received several awards. The Observer described it as “a haunting reminder of how accessible Shakespeare can be to a modern audience anywhere”, while Donaukurier added that “this is theatre such as Shakespeare himself might have imagined”. Macbeth is touring the castles of Norway and Sweden before stops in Denmark, Germany and Vietnam, exploring different settings and audiences on its journey. If you are a fan of cultural nights out under open skies – then this is an opportunity not to be missed. And with the stillness of the night air and a convincing delivery, the magic of Shakespeare is very likely to creep up on you, regardless of your initial interest.

Think four-metre long scarves and huge, oversized cardigans. But let’s face it; all this talk about the weather and cool clothing is really just an excuse to cover up, hide granny arms and a gut that’s sticking out far beyond the belt buckle, and avoid the gym. This weekend, however, Copenhagen has two events on offer that might encourage you to get on to that workout so that you won’t have to resort to fashion anymore. Because really, that oversized style is kind of passé. Firstly, there is the Round Christiansborg Open Water swimming contest on Saturday. Obviously, for some participants the event is all about the top spot on the podium, but for others it’s more about the opportunity to see one of the most beautiful, historical areas of Copenhagen from another perspective. And secondly, for those of you who prefer a slower pace, no competition and drier conditions, there is the ECCO Walkathon on Sunday. As the name suggests, this is a walk and even though you might be doing it in order to get rid of that big gut we referred to earlier, it also supports charity and you can really never go wrong with that.

Will they stay close and support each other, or will they be driven apart by outside influences? Where do we come from, where are we going, and how much are our lives determined by circumstances we cannot change? Is every man really the architect of his own fortune or are we mere products of our social environment? Future roads is an attempt to find answers to some of the most pressing questions of modern society. Adequate to the topic, the story is performed by three young break dancers from Freestyle Phanatix. EK

Open Water 2011 Round Christiansborg is an annual swimming competition arranged by the Danish Swimming Federation and held in the gorgeous settings of the city canals. The 2km route takes the swimmers around parliament. Who would have thought the water in Copenhagen was clean enough to splash around in and not dirty and murky, as in most
other capital cities. The swimmers start in Frederiksholms Kanal, then swim past the Black Diamond, continue along the waterfront, under Knippelsbro Bridge, past the Stock Exchange, Højbro Plads and Gammel Strand, before finishing in Frederiksholms Kanal. This is definitely an alternative way to explore some of the best historical sites in Copenhagen.
ECCO Walkathon 2011 This annual event starts out at Kastellet, the old citadel, where participants can sign up for either a 6km or 10km walk around the city. It’s not just an opportunity to get some exercise, but also to do it in the name of a good cause. For each km you walk, ECCO will donate 7.5kr to an charity of your choice, chosen from the three organisa-

Just 358 years later, in an attempt to stay as true as possible to the original version, nine opera singers will take on 24 roles between them. They populate a grotesque, raven-hued baroque universe, accompanied by a small baroque-ensemble. It has supported a variety of charities over the

Certainly, the event plays a major part of the shoe company’s branding and CSR strategy, but in its lifetime, ECCO’s programme has donated around 25 million Danish kroner to charity organisations and you can’t be pointing fingers at that. While Arcade Fire’s success with last year’s The Suburbs may have led to the group outgrowing its indie label, the Canadian have has pulled off the rare feat of maintaining their credibility and position as the darlings of music critics and aficionados while simultaneously selling boatloads of albums and selling out arenas worldwide. The eight-piece Montreal-based collective, led by husband and wife team Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, are touring in support of the re-release of The Suburbs, which sees the addition of two songs and the Jonze-produced short film, Scenes from the Suburbs. The 30-minute film has
played at the Berlin International Film Festival and the SXSW Film Festival. They will bringing their show to the appropriately suburban venue of the Ballerup Super Arena. The concert will be the band’s first visit to Denmark since a sold-out show at KB Hallen four years ago. While many grumbled about the Ballerup location – wishing instead the band would have played the Roskilde Festival - the northwest suburb provides a fitting setting for showcasing The Suburbs. The album’s 16 tracks are a thematic and nostalgic journey through growing up in the ‘burbs. Disillusion, heartache, the search for identity, the sorrows of strip malls – all are captured perfectly on the album by Butler, drawing on his own childhood in a suburb of Houston, Texas. Not only did The Suburbs net Arcade Fire the unexpected Grammy win, the album ended at or near the top of many critics’ ‘Best of 2010’ lists – including, for what its worth, mine. But Arcade Fire was no stranger to critical acclaim prior to last year’s release. Their first album, 2004’s Funeral, rocketed the band to stardom and was named album of the year by Pitchfork, MTV2 and others. It also made them

The 2007 follow-up Neon Bible, recorded in an abandoned church in a small Quebec town, was also a critical and commercial success, debuting at number one in Canada and Ireland, and number two in the US and UK (number eleven in Denmark). Beyond racking up awards and glowing reviews, the band is also known for their political activism. Butler was a vocal supporter of Barack Obama during the 2008 US presidential campaign, and the band have been long-time activists for Haiti – Chassange lived in the Caribbean country until her family fled in the 1960s. Arcade Fire have donated portions of their ticket sales to the NGO Partners in Health, which operates hospitals and clinics in Haiti, and Chassange has launched Kanpe, a Montreal-based microcredit organisation aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty in Haiti. Depending on where you come from, you may be feeling that summer has come to an abrupt end. Some of us cannot dissociate August from the height of summer and we cannot help but feel disappointed, year after year. The rain, the wind, the low temperatures all combine to give us this feeling. Add to that the ‘flyverdragter’ (snowsuits) already on display in shop windows and the atmosphere is downright depressing. Do we really need such a harsh, untimely reminder of the long winter months to come? Or is it a matter of being realistic? Summer is, in effect, over and by putting winter items on sale now, Denmark is preparing for the long, dark and cold months ahead. Danes know this and it does not serve them to deny the crude reality of the weather in these northern parts. So some people go out and buy the flyverdragter for their children in August. It could also be a matter of organisation. The Vikings did not survive and thrive by waiting until the last minute to cure their meat and get their animal skins ready for the winter. Neither do we, as foreign mums in Denmark, wish our little ones’ bones to be surprised by freezing temperatures because we refuse to bid summertime farewell when it has already bid the same to us. Be it as it may, this is when they are on sale. One expat mum could not understand who would buy a snowsuit in August. She then tried to buy them in December but discovered that there were far fewer choices and that the best deals were gone. Some Danish mums are just as annoyed to be yanked out of their summer in this manner and they at-

SNEAKING A LOOK I would have liked to start in the following way: After a long, warm and sunny summer spent in shorts and flip-flops … But since most of you have been spared that uncomfortable post-summer moment of putting your socks back on silver linings and all - I won’t and will just suggest you should slip on some smart and snazzy sneakers to welcome autumn. The ultimate of its kind, the jewellery fair is set to dazzle and sparkle once again this year. First launched in Copenhagen in 2002, it has been held annually in the month of August at the city’s international exhibition venue, Bella Center, ever since. Over the years, the the number of exhibitors and countries participating has gradually increased; last year it hosted 194 exhibitors and attracted over 7,000 visitors – a figure that is set to increase thanks to the joint efforts of Bella Center, the Danish Jewellers Association, and the recentlyopened Bella Sky Hotel. So what can one expect at the fair? Having been under the impression that the fair will also have retail opportunities, I began to have second thoughts, considering the dangers of indulging myself and exploiting my credit card. But as I was informed by Bolette Hvalsoe, the sales and marketing manager and the key co-ordinator of this fair, “The event is mainly for retailers and to provide inspiration for end users.” The exhibitors, who include international designers, will be there to show their latest collections and designs. Endusers, who visit the fair, can widen their knowledge base about jewellery and the designers and also get a chance to take a look at the latest trends, designs and collections before they hit the market. Some of the foreign exhibitors this year include Alberti Gioielli and Nanis Italian Jewels of Italy, Bettina Götsch and

Another highlight of this year’s fair is the two competitions: the Brand New, and the Bella Nordic Jewellery Award. The Brand New is a platform for upcoming artists, designers, goldsmiths and jewellery producers to showcase their talents and the award is presented to the most innovative design of the year. Last year’s winner Anne Cohen was awarded by Princess Marie, who is a keen visitor and is also expected to grace the fair with her visit this year. The Bella Nordic Jewellery Award, which is a Nordic championship for goldsmiths that recognises the finest workmanship in the region, is presented on the final day. Also at the fair is an exciting trend lounge with trend descriptions from
Peclers Paris and a host of inspiring watch brands where one can sneak a peek at what’s in store for the next season. The collections will be displayed in the lounge along with trend photography. And last, but definitely not least, the fair will feature talks from jewellery experts around the world. All the necessary information is provided on the fair’s website, which also has a link for registration. So if your final weekend in August is looking bleak at the moment, then hop on the Metro to Bella Center for this year’s Copenhagen Jewellery Fair and prepare to be-dazzled with gold, silver, diamonds and other gems from around the world that for one weekend only are making their way to Copenhagen.

The end of summer is approaching. Sniff. I truly believe that Europe got ripped off this summer in the heat department, but in Denmark we are used to inequities when it comes to weather. To celebrate the close of summer, I have a recipe suggestion for the fruit that is synony-
mous with the season: watermelon. If you are a fan of sweet and savory, even better. This salad combines sweet, juicy watermelon chunks with salad greens, fresh herbs, red onion, and small cubes of feta. The colours will leave you inspired. When you get a bite of the ingredients all mixed up on your fork, you will

be grateful. What’s more, this salad is guest-worthy and extremely easy to assemble. My only caution is to add the watermelon pieces just before serving. Otherwise the juice of the melon will wilt the rest of the ingredients with a somewhat unappetising result. An hour or so before my lunch guests arrived, I threw everything - except the watermelon into a mixing bowl. As soon as we were ready to eat, I folded in the watermelon and added the lemon juice and salt.
Ingredients 1,400 ml cubed seedless watermelon 4 or 5 handfuls (½ container) of rocket greens (rucola) 85g feta cheese, cut into small cubes or crumbled 125 ml thinly sliced red onion 60 ml finely chopped fresh basil 60 ml finely chopped mint 50 ml fresh lemon juice salt to taste (around 2 ml) Directions Place all of the ingredients in a large bowl and toss gently until combined. Serve immediately. Serves 4

Tucked away behind a hard to-find-door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Head on down but don’t mention the Guillotine Nelson Mandela, Prince Charles and George Bush Senior are just three of a long list of VIPs who Allan Andersen has served over the years. But after spending most of his career working abroad in places like Dubai, Bahrain and St. Lucia, catering to the needs of the upper echeons of high-society, Andersen decided to return back to Denmark to fulfill his dream of introducing a new style to Copenhagen, via the launch of the kind of pastry shop never before seen in this country. His goal was not to open up another cosy coffee shop around the corner; it was to prove to Copenhageners that bigger things can be done. Granted, the city already had a well established and flourishing bakery scene, but in his opinion it lacked a certain style. To live up to these great expectations he chose Marie Antoinette’s ostentatious lifestyle as an inspiration for his new business idea. Many might question the choice of French queen’s name for a traditional pastry shop in Denmark, but actually the choice is pretty apt, Andersen told InOut. “After all, rumour has it that she had an affair with a Swedish earl!” he said with a little wink. His Konditori Antoinette – opened in 2009 in a backyard in one of the oldest districts in town – is based on multiple principles. Most importantly, nothing is too crazy or fancy to be infeasible. Just like the luxurious and swanky Marie Antoinette, Andersen doesn’t like to set himself limits. The only limit he has is not to produce something boring. Other important factors are that the products are handmade and based on traditional recipes, and that the ingredients are as natural as possible. As it turns out, his instincts were right: there really was a demand for extravagant pastries in Copenhagen. Within a short amount of time, allrounder Andersen and his small team were arranging themed parties (including one for last year’s 18th centurythemed Golden Years) for wannabe Marie Antoinettes, or premieres for films like Alice in Wonderland, Entangled and Cinderella, which wanted that extra lavish pazzazz. The cakes in upcoming star Fallulah’s music video ‘Out of it’ were exclusively made for her. And if his café, parties and catering commitments were not enough to completely deprive him of any sleep, he also participates in Copenhagen Fashion Week, with events like ‘jewellery meets cake’.
The extravagent headdresses worn by the French aristocracy ensured they looked good before and after their execution
Don’t be put off by Andersen’s highclass profile. Whoever finds his way to Konditori Antoinette gets a warm welcome as regular visitors are equally important to Andersen as attentiondrawing events. Equipped with a small counter and a whole cabinet full of delicious tarts, petit fours, pralines and cup-cakes, the café serves to spoil its customers. Just sit down on one of the golden-white chairs, at tables decorated with little silver crowns, and you will be well received by one of the friendly waitresses or the man in charge himself.
With its high ceiling, the light atmosphere, chandeliers and a whole mirrorwall, you might as well being have an afternoon tea in the royal halls – it’s a little decadence in the middle of busy Strøget. If the weather is fine, you can also sit outside in the secluded courtyard. And the luxury does not end with the interior. Off the menu you can order ‘luksus croissant’, ‘luksus kaffe’, ‘Versaillessalat’ and ‘Noblessesalat’ - not to mention the other various sandwiches and bakeries. In the most likely case that
you can’t decide which slice of cake to get, you can choose different miniature versions, served on small cake stands. And no matter which time of day you visit, there’s always an extensive special: breakfast for early birds, brunch for the late riser, a ‘shopping break menu’ or‘ afternoon tea for two’ for shoppers, and a cheese plate with red wine to start a classy evening. .

Bobby Fischer Against the World (15)
Dir: Liz Garbus; US/UK/Ice documentary, 2011, 93 mins; Bobby Fischer, Gary Kasparov, Boris Spassky Premiered August 25 Playing Vester Vov Vov
The tortured genius and the celebrity recluse are two archetypes by which the popular imagination appears incurably enthralled. They occupy extreme but ambiguous positions in the social firmament, simultaneously familiar and unknowable, often winning our sympathy even as they fail our understanding. They reassuringly remind us that exceptional talent can be an affliction as well as a gift and that sometimes the price of success is one that most would not wish to pay. Few in recent times have combined these two roles with more tragedy or pathos than Bobby Fischer. Fischer’s descent into wild and irrational behaviour is far from a unique narrative, particularly in chess. The history of the game contains many similar trajectories. As GK Chesterton noted in arguing that reason bred insanity: “Poets do not go mad, but chess players do.” Polish grandmaster Akiba Rubinstein would hide in the corner between moves, owing to his anthropophobia (fear of people), eventually retiring from the game when schizophrenia got the better of him. William Steinitz, the first undisputed chess champion, died in an asylum. Then there was Paul Morphy, the American who was said to be the 19th century’s finest player and to whom Fischer has frequently been com-
‘Oh gawd ... I thought we’d be playing Monopoly’ pared - having beaten all his rivals, he began a decline into paranoid delusion. Aged 47, he was found dead in his bath, surrounded by women’s shoes. Although Fischer died in 2008, the crowning moment in his life came in 1972, when, aged 29, he defeated the Soviet grandmaster Boris Spassky in the World Championship. The next 36 years were messy and morbidly fascinating. The world’s greatest chess player became a recluse and stopped doing the one thing he excelled at. The hope that he might re-emerge to add to his reputation gradually ebbed, to be replaced by dismay at his anti-Semitic rants, and when he eventually played a rematch
with Spassky in the early 90s, he wasn’t the same force. The first Fischer-Spassky match made worldwide news. As archive footage included in Liz Garbus’s new film reminds us, it knocked Watergate and the Vietnam War off the headlines. The match has spawned many articles and books (among them Steiner’s White Knights of Reykjavik) and understandably it is the pivotal event in Garbus’s film. She doesn’t ignore the second half of his life, but nor does she devote an undue amount of time to it. Combining archive footage and photographs with contemporary interviews in a manner familiar from
countless other documentary portraits, Garbus provides no revelations for anyone who has followed Fischer’s story. Even so, this is a poignant and unsettling film, and Fischer’s mother Regina would be worthy of a documentary in her own right. An American communist who was under investigation by the FBI - a single mother, protester, factory worker and doctor - she was highly educated and fiercely driven, but a terrible parent who neglected the young Bobby. An impressive array of interviewees has been assembled to pore over Fischer’s life and career, among them grandmasters Kasparov and Polgar. What emerges from their reminiscences
is a mix of awestruck admiration and exasperation – Fischer had a knack of antagonising even his closest supporters. The footage of him late in his life in Iceland reveals just how objectionable he could be. At the same time Garbus makes it clear that Fischer was a victim, a lonely, neglected kid who somehow “penetrated the secrets of chess in his Brooklyn apartment”, but whose mastery of the sport came at the expense of almost every other aspect of his life. Fischer died aged 64 – one year, as was duly observed, for each square of the chess board.
Killing your boss has never been this much fun Horrible Bosses (11) Dir: Seth Gordon; US com, 2011, 100 mins; Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston Premiered August 25 Playing nationwide Finally a black comedy boasting solid performances on both sides of the camera. Take the script (by Michael Markowitz); it sold for millions at an auction in 2005 but has already proved well worth the bid. That’s no coincidence. Sort of like the 2005
thriller Derailed (also starring Aniston), Horrible Bosses unfolds like dominos tumbling – ever faster, ever louder – creating ever grimmer repercussions for the focal characters, a likeable bunch of average guys. We like them because their chemistry seems genuine, their gallows humour is nicely choreographed, and the desperate means they take spring from human motivations. Or maybe they’re just forgivable next to their despicable bosses. Old friends Nick, Kurt and Dale (Bateman, Sudeikis and Day) are conscientious workers, deserving of recognition but not getting it. Their immediate superiors (Spacey, Farrell and Aniston, respectively) happen to be
the vilest people they have ever known. Bullying, sadistic, and sexually abusive (that’s just Aniston), Nick, Kurt and Dale meet for Friday night beers and have to agree that life would be better without them. Spacey and Farrell are easily the worst – these are the kind of bosses who’ll wreck your private life if you quit. They delight in ‘owning’ their employees, as Spacey puts it. Aniston’s harmful complex (runaway nymphomania) seems less mortifying, all things considered – but I take the screenwriter’s point. It doesn’t make for a good working environment. Over several hilarious scenes three deadly operations are carefully planned. These guys have
never violated more than traffic laws so they figure they need all the advice they can get from the shadiest ex-con in the shadiest joint in downtown LA (Foxx). You’ll appreciate a screwball scene involving Ioan Gruffudd cameoing as a James Bond-like hitman whose toe-curling real profession is suddenly revealed. The sub-theme of plotting the perfect murder nicely counterbalances the innocence one has come to associate with Aniston and Bateman’s comedies. Ferociously plot-driven, the film survives the pitfalls of overkill by refashioning the genre until the characters basically seem like ‘real’ people. KASPER R GULDBERG

film
26 August - 01 September 2011
Book Your Tickets Tree of Life (11) Dir: Terence Malick; 2011, 139 mins; Brad Pitt, Sean Penn There are too many beautifully observed moments to dismiss Terence Malick’s fifth film in over 40 years with derision as was the case recently at a Cannes screening. Told in several timelines, the film follows a religious Midwest family in the 1950s and is a rare opportunity to experience pure cinema as it was intended. MW
Beginners (3) Dir: Mike Mills; 2010, 105 mins; Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer Beginners is the touching and often funny account of a rootless son who drifts from relationship to relationship and feels creatively shackled and under-appreciated in his work as an illustrator. Mill’s film is just like poetry, where words and pictures flirt dynamically with one another. MW
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows II (11) Dir: David Yates; 2011, 130 mins; Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint The Harry Potter finale ended an era last July. Cinematic magic follow our heroic threesome with a more assured Harry complementing lightning-quick thinking Hermione and the steady presence of Ron. With a litany of impossible foes and an actionpacked battle sequence finale, it’s
one of the better HP films. SS
Melancholia (15) Dir: Lars Von Trier; 2011, 130 mins; Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg Justine feels trapped in a limousine with her newly wedded husband en route to her own wedding reception. From here, we witness the end of the world: a giant planet called Melancholia is on a course towards Earth. The film brilliantly conveys a paralysing loneliness - the claustrophobic sensation of being trapped inside one’s own skin. MW
Also Playing Super 8 (11) Dir: JJ Abrams; 2011, 118 mins; Elle Fanning, Noah Emmerich Super 8 takes you on a trip to childhood excitement, and is a homage to past Spielberg fantasy adventure movies. The whole ensemble of unknown newcomers winds up creating teenage gawkiness every bit as natural and unforced as the real thing. The relationships between these youngsters are the real heart and soul of the movie. MW
Barney’s Version (3) Dir: Richard J Lewis; 2010, 138 mins; Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman Barney Panofsky is a lonely embittered man, reduced to drinking at home while telephonically tormenting his ex-wife’s new partner at ungodly hours. The film, an adaptation of the novel
Barney’s Version, has one great strength: the comic yet insightful depictions of these relationships that populate an unarguably colourful life. MW
Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop (15) Dir: Rodman Flender; US doc, 2011, 89 mins; Conan O’Brien Premiered August 11 American comedian Conan O’Brien makes a comeback on screen with a documentary about his life and career. The camera follows the unstoppable artist as he hits the road with a music-and-comedy show named Legally Prohibited From Being funny on Television Tour. Though the film is an open window to O’Brien’s personal life, it might not live up to everyone’s expectations: according to the New York Times, this “rock ‘n’ roll comedy extravaganza leaves much to be desired”. VM
Captain America: The First Avenger (15) Dir: Joe Johnston; US action, 2011, 124 mins; Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving With Captain America: The First Avenger, everything is in place for the biggest gathering of superheroes on celluloid ever. It’s 1942. Steve Rogers is the small scrawny kid with more ailments than ligaments. But with the help of his good friend Howard Stark, Rogers is turned into a physical specimen at its peak level of performance: Captain America is born. While Johnston doesn’t wow us with any-
thing new this time around, at least he has put together a film worth seeing. KE
The Hangover Part II (11) Dir: Todd Phillips; 2011, 120 mins; Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms The Hangover Part II is the same premise as the first film. Stu is getting married in Thailand with the gang in tow, when his fiancee’s younger brother isfound missing. If The Hangover Part II was not a sequel, it would receive much higher praise, but it set the bar so high that reaching it again is virtually impossible. KE
Midnight in Paris (3) Dir: Woody Allen; UK/ France comedy, 2011, 94 mins; Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams Premiered August 11 At the stroke of midnight, Gil discovers a portal to the 1920s in the shape of an automobile; he is whisked away to a Paris of yesteryear populated by the literary and artistic giants of that age. Despite the promising trailer, a sinking disappointment accompanies the realisation – this is going to be one of Woody’s daffier works. MW
Mr. Popper’s Penguins(7) Dir: Mark Waters; 2011, 94 mins; Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino Adapted from the classic 1938 children’s book by Richard and Florence Atwater, the best thing anyone can say about this film is
that kids – some kids – will love it. Popper’s story stays true to its loosely fairytale-ish undertone, with a heartwarming Hollywood-like denouement. KRG
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (11) Dir: Rupert Wyatt; USA Sci-fi 2011, 105 min; James Franco, Andy Serkis Rupert Wyatt succeeds in enticing us with an intriguing concept: in our near future, a drug is being developed with the ultimate aim of curing Alzheimer’s. Unfortunately, what followed that initial idea was didactic and sometimes illogical with dumbed-down dialogue and performances that too frequently fail to impress. MW
Unknown (15) Dir: Jaume Collet-Serra; 2011, 113 mins; Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger, January Jones Unknown is a chilly little thriller about amnesia, mistrust and lost identity. Interchangeable Euro baddies lurk in the shadows, seeming omniscient and omnipresent, waiting to strike. As the movie reveals itself, you may discover that it reminds you of another superior one, which we will not name for fear of giving away the twist. JH
Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides (11) Dir: Rob Marshall; US action, 2011, 127 mins; Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz
G19
Johnny falls back into the role where he runs like a girl, walks like a drunk and charms like a son-of-a-Depp. Like any film worth its salt and shekels, Pirates 4 starts out briskly while introducing new characters. And just like your soda, it may not have much to it bar the empty calories, but it’s enjoyable nonetheless. KE
Avoid like the Plague Conan the Barbarian (15) Dir: Marcus Nispel; US Adventure; 2011, 112 mins; Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman Ten-year-old Conan, already a junior killing machine, has his world turned upside down when warlord Khalar Zim comes to his village in search of a mask that will give him the power to rule Hibernia. This version of John Milius’s 1982 film is a tedious waste-of-time: minimal on story, character, and intrigue. DS
Green Lantern (11) Dir: Martin Campbell; US sci-fi action, 2011, 114 mins; Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively Enter the latest incarnation of the Green Lantern franchise, the illegitimate 3D love-child of Top Gun and Flubber, an abomination that has the distinction of being both a remake and the precursor to a plethora of sequels. The film leaves one wishing that instead of 3D, we had been offered just one dimension of content or creativity. AS

PICK O THE W F EEK
Exile
spor t THE W OF EEK
SV1, Sunday 21:00
It’s funny how some of Britain’s best actors have never bothered with films. You’d be hard-pushed to find one David Jason’s graced, and as a result he isn’t wellknown beyond colonial shores. The same is true of John Simm, the star of this week’s pick Exile, which sees him once again link up with writer Paul Abbott following the brilliant British thriller State of Play. “When I was approached, I initially said no way,” Simm told the Guardian. “But then I read it and thought: ‘If I don’t do this, some other f**ker is going to do it.’ I haven’t read anything this good since State of Play.” Abbott - who is probably best known for writing Shameless, a series he based on his own
life – has once again delved into his personal experience to create a story (written by his disciple Danny Brocklehurst – another name to watch out for) containing heart-felt observations on Alzheimer’s and cynical insights into investigative journalism. Co-starring Jim Broadbent as an ailing, ageing parent who is the subject of his own son’s story, this was universally praised when it aired earlier in the year. Elsewhere, True Blood (Wed, SV1 22:00) is back for a third season; there’s another chance to catch the disappointing second series of Bored to Death (Wed, SV1 22:50), which proves once again that it’s impossible to repeat the success of a series if you give your writer
impossible deadlines to satisfy viewer demand; Michael Jackson documentary This is it (TV3 Puls, Mon 21:00) does its best to cash in with a film that was probably being edited while he was being buried; opera fans will enjoy a rendition of Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore (DRK, Sat 20:00) if they can overlook SV1, Sun 21:00 Exile the appalling language (Warning: includes a big, big D); sportswise the US Open tennis tournament (Eurosport, Mon 19:15) gets under way, the UEFA Super Cup (TV3+ 20:30) provides some rare Friday footy while Tottenham vs Man City (K6, Sun 14:00) and Manchester United vs Arsenal (16:30) are the picks in the Premier League.
