Welcome to Copenhagen Jazz Festival Copenhagen Jazz Festival celebrated its 40th edition a year ago, partly marked by the release of “Fyrre kunstplakater, én jazzfestival” – the first book to deliver a comprehensive look at the festival’s proud poster tradition, its many associated artists and their visual interpretations of jazz as a means of expression, and the festival as a broader cultural phenomenon. This year’s art poster has at least one foot planted firmly in the future. The poster has been created by visual artist John Kørner, adding: “For me, jazz is an emotional and poetic experience; an entrance to a more futuristic level. Therefore, it is my attempt, my ambition with this year’s art poster, to signal a strong and abstract color scheme with open spaces and entrances that we, in the company of jazz music, can disappear into.” One of this year’s festival themes – Future Sound of Jazz – mirrors this futuristic foresight with its foundation in one of jazz’s most prominent features, namely its ability to evolve itself while maintaining the future as a dominant focal point.
Jazz Festival in 1979. These days, Copenhagen is among Europe’s most attractive tourist hotspots, in part caused by its inclusivity and diverse sceneries: the old and the new, water as well as land, parks and squares, bikes and scooters – all of it contained in a relaxed and accommodating atmosphere and vibe. And here’s the conclusion: Copenhagen Jazz Festival is undoubtedly Copenhagen – and jazz is one of the city’s most important soundtracks. All of this has been made possible with support from Nordea-fonden, the Danish Arts Foundation, Copenhagen Municipality and Frederiksberg Municipality. Their support has created an excellent foundation for the continued development of Copenhagen Jazz Festival with regards to both its artistic content and the dissemination of said content to an audience of old as well as newfangled fans of the festival. Concert Hall Highlights Copenhagen Jazz Festival has always been home to a range of great theaters and impressive concert halls – here is a small selection of this year's headlining artists DR Koncerthuset As you approach DR Koncerthuset, a fabulous sight greets you. Designed by the french architect Jean Nouvel, the blue frontage is monumental, yet airy, as if the building had been carved out of the sky. Events at Koncerthuset range widely in terms of size and genre: Jazz greats, symphony orchestras and pop/rock stars spread across its concert halls of varying size. Major international artists such as Anoushka Shankar, Gregory Porter, Dianne Reeves, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Caetano Veloso & Gilberto Gil have all performed here in the past. Tivoli Tivoli Gardens was founded in 1843 and has become a national treasure and an international attraction, located in the heart of Copenhagen. Fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen visited

many times, as did Walt Disney who even found the inspiration to his own Disney World here. Tivoli is also home to several music venues such as the Tivoli Concert Hall, The Glass Hall Theater, The Pantomime Theatre and the large Open Air Stage, which make Tivoli suitable for any musical occasion – both classical, pop and jazz. And where in the world will you find concert halls like Tivoli's, located in the middle of a fairy tale garden with flower beds, magical lights, sparkling fountains and restaurants? Betty Nansen Theater Award winning theatre known for presenting reinterpretations of all the classics – all the way back to the 17th century. Some of the biggest actors in Denmark have performed at Betty Nansen throughout the years. Since 2012 the Betty Nansen Theater has been one of the jazz festival’s largest
scenes with room for 500 audiences. With its beautiful interior and atmosphere, the theatre frames unique experiences where classical musicians meet major jazz artists, and where genres such as classical, electronica and jazz become one. Den Sorte Diamant Den Sorte Diamant (trans: The Black Diamond) is the latest addition to The Royal Library of Copenhagen. The Queen’s Hall is the library’s beautiful concert hall, in which various concerts take place year round in the genres of classical and jazz. The concert hall is an official venue at Copenhagen Jazz Festival, is known for its unique acoustics and has a capacity of 4-600 people. Copenhagen Jazz Festival by Night As night falls on Copenhagen Jazz Festival, the many local and visiting musicians usually gather in their preferred hangouts, exchanging tall tales and loose jams in front of a festive audience – Macy Gray, Bill Frisell, Lady Gaga and many others have all been spotted jamming out after hours at places such as La Fontaine, Montmartre and Christiania. The festival can’t make any promises regarding attendance for obvious reasons, but be sure to check out these venues and jams if your festival nights don’t have a strict curfew – you might just find yourself caught up in jazz history!
Copenhagen Jazz Clubs Copenhagen’s buzzing jazz clubs are the driving force in the city’s long history as one of the jazz capitals of the world. Experience the intimate surroundings which continue to attract great names in jazz to this very day La Fontaine La Fontaine is the oldest jazz venue in Copenhagen and is legendary for its nightly jam sessions. Throughout the years, some of the biggest stars in jazz have crossed paths with this small and intimate jazz bar in the heart of Copenhagen, performing in its informal surroundings. Residing in Copenhagen’s historic midtown, La Fontaine is no concert hall in size, yet nearly 100 jazz lovers can enjoy the music in this iconic club which presents jazz all year round.

Jazzhus Montmartre Jazzhus Montmartre is Copenhagen's historic jazz hotspot, presenting world class live jazz at the original venue at Store Regnegade 19A in the heart of the Danish capital. From 1959-1976, the club made jazz history as the European home for jazz giants Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Kenny Drew and many other masters of the 60's and 70's. The first decade after the inaugural Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 1979 Montmartre (now relocated to Nørregade) was the prime festival club with visits by Pharoah Sanders, Sonny Rollins, Jim Hall, Esberto Gismonti and others before closing down in 1991. Jazzcup At Jazzcup, right across the street from The King’s Garden, you can buy music, coffee and get a major live experience all at the same time. Jazzcup is a combination of both record store, café and venue and part of the organisation JazzKlubben, which strives to serve as an ambassador for jazz music

Huset-KBH Huset-KBH (or simply ‘Huset’) is Denmark’s first and largest cultural house founded in 1970. Today, Huset hosts approximately 1,600 annual events, distributed across 5 diverse stages, a cinema, and a board game café. With her meteoric career, award-winning Mozambique-born singer Mariza has spent the past two decades at the peak of the global scene for world music. This summer sees Mariza’s first performance in Copenhagen. �

Marcus Miller is an award-winning American jazz composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, who has worked with Aretha Franklin, Miles Davis, Luther Vandross, Herbie Hancock, Eric Clapton, JayZ and Beyonce. Miller has played the bass on over 500 recordings and gained many wonderful opportunities during this time, including being musical director of the Saturday Night Live band, writing a track for “The Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin and touring with jazz great Miles Davis’ band from his early 20’s. On July 14 the bass icon returns with a performance in DR Koncerthuset on the final night of the 41st festival edition. �
Brazilian pianist and singer/songwriter Eliane Elias has released a long string of albums and won numerous Grammy Awards throughout her impressive career. Elias employs her very own characteristic style, inspired in equal parts by her Brazilian roots and the great jazz songbook. The primary uniting force in her solo excursions has always been her mesmerizing vocals. In Tivoli she is flanked by her husband and musical companion, bass player Marc Johnson, alongside Tivoli Big Band for a night of new tunes from her upcoming album and old favorites as well as a selection of classics from the great Brazilian songbook. �

Guitarist, composer, singer and activist Gilberto Gil is one of Brazil’s greatest cultural figures. Gil has always had the gift of incorporating every aspect of daily life into his work – from his initial tenure with bossa nova through to his work with longtime collaborator Caetano Veloso and their foundation of tropicália, his four years as Brazil’s cultural minister (2003-2008) and now, at the age of 76, with the release of his latest album “OK OK OK” (2018). From family life to political, social or cultural movements that characterize his time, everything is an inspiration for a new song, an idea for a melody, an ingenious harmonic movement. �

An all-time great soul, R&B, funk, and pop drummer, Bernard Purdie's impeccable time and mastery of backbeats and grooves have been celebrated throughout his illustrious career spanning more than 50 years. Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Steely Dan and Miles Davis are but a fraction of the many greats to which Purdie has lent his chops. Trumpeter Randy Brecker is oneof-a-kind – a style icon whose virtuosity and range has carried him through collabs with artists such as Eliane Elias, Stevie Wonder, Dire Straits, Horace Silver, Blood Sweat and Tears and of course Brecker Brothers, the groundbreaking fusion group he created with his late brother, saxophonist Michael Brecker. The two giants are joined by bass player Scott Colley, Benjamin Koppel on sax and pianist Jacob Christofferson. �
The great ones endure, and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Very few singers over the last fifty years have matched her unassailable artistry. This seven-time Grammy winner has enjoyed #1 hits in Pop, Gospel, R&B and Contemporary, and has triumphed in film, television and live performance. All told, Knight has recorded more than 38 albums over the years. Adored the world over, Knight has been performing at The White House, a packed Wembley Stadium, and returned to her home state of Georgia to sing the National Anthem as part of Super Bowl 2019. �

Known for his warm baritone vocals, Gregory Porter rose to acclaim in the 2010s with his earthy, cross-pollinated brand of jazz, soul, and gospel. A gifted singer of standards as well as more contemporary soul material, Porter has earned favorable comparisons to his idols Nat King Cole, Donny Hathaway, and Stevie Wonder. He announced his arrival by picking up a Grammy nomination for his 2010 debut, “Water”. After signing to Blue Note, he gained even wider notice for his third album, 2013’s “Liquid Spirit”, which hit number two on the jazz charts, and won a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Although his original songs are his main focus, Porter often returns to his roots, such as on his 2017 tribute album “Nat King Cole & Me”. �

Often referred to as a jazz singer for the hip-hop generation, American vocalist José James draws inspiration from Marvin Gaye, Billie Holiday and fellow Minneapolitan Prince to form a unique blend of soul jazz and true musicianship. Celebrating the eightieth birth year of the legendary R&B singer/songwriter Bill Withers, Blue Note recording artist José James presents an exploration of Withers’ deep musical catalogue that continues to touch millions of hearts worldwide. On July 5, he performs his Blue Note-tribute to the great Bill Withers at Jazz by the Sea. �

Joshua Redman “Still Dreaming” (US) 10/7, 17:30 + 20:00 � Cowbell / Betty Nansen Teatret Joshua Redman is joined by trumpeter Ron Miles, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Dave King for a concert based on their recent album "Still Dreaming" on Nonesuch. "Still Dreaming” is an album inspired by Redman’s father Dewey Redman's 1976–1987 band, Old and New Dreams. Along with the senior Redman, Old and New Dreams featured an all-star lineup of Ornette Coleman collaborators – cornetist Don Cherry, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Ed Blackwell – who continued pushing musical boundaries as they had with Coleman even after their former bandleader moved in a new direction. “Still Dreaming” features six new compositions by the new band as well as one tune by Haden and one from Coleman. �
Airto Moreira with special guest Flora Purim (BRA) 6/7, 20:00 � Jazz by the Sea / Kulturhuset Islands Brygge Brazilian musicians Airto Moreira and Flora Purim both hold widely acclaimed careers spanning almost 50 years – from Hermeto Pascoal and “Bitches Brew” to Return to Forever and beyond. After a sabbatical period, Airto recorded Aluê - his first album ever made in his native Brazil, presented on a European tour in 2018. Now, Flora Purim is back on stage as a guest star with Moreira on a new tour to revisit some of their brightest moments and continue to challenge the borders of creative music. �
Bill Laswell & Kalaha (US/DK) 12/7, 20:00 � Den Sorte Diamant, Dronningesalen For more than three decades, Bill Laswell, the visionary bass-playing producer has been a highprofile, creative force in modern music. He has left his producer imprint on about 3000 releases with such artists as Mick Jagger, Yoko Ono, Iggy Pop, Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, Bootsy Collins, Nine Inch Nails, Motorhead, Peter Gabriel, Blur, The Ramones, Sting, The Last Poets, Afrika Bambaataa, Julian Schnabel, Whitney Houston, Manu Dibango, Fela Kuti – and, in particular, Herbie Hancock. As a bass player, Laswell has left a distinctive mark on both his own and other people’s projects – and here he is together with the Danish group Kahala: Emil de Waal, Niclas Knudsen, Jens Berents ‘Rumpistol’ Christiansen, Mikael ‘Spejderrobot’ Elkjær and Gustaf Ljunggren. �

Bro is currently leading a trio with Joey Baron and Thomas Morgan and a quartet with Palle Mikkelborg, Thomas Morgan and Jon Christensen. At Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2019 he performs in the intimate setting of Brorsons Kirke / Brorson’s Church with a very special one-off trio, flanked by one of the most admired, accomplished bassists working in jazz today, Larry Grenadier, and Jorge Rossy – internationally recognized as one of the most influential drummers of his generation. �
Bill Charlap Trio (US) 10/7, 20:00 � Bremen Teater Blue Note-pianist and composer Bill Charlap has performed with a long line of jazz greats, from Phil Woods to Tony Bennett, Gerry Mulligan and Wynton Marsalis. Besides serving as the artistic director for New York’s Jazz in July Festival, Charlap has made a name for himself as a preeminent interpreter of lauded American songs. His trio consisting of Peter Washington on bass and drummer Kenny Washington visits Bremen Teater with their unique take on modern trio jazz. �

Since Sangaré’s years as a young girl her objective has been to change the perception the world has of her land, and to blow us away with its astounding musical heritage. Sangaré is a true reference, not just for the excellence of her music, but also for leading the fight for women’s rights, being an independent business woman and an entrepreneur in musical projects, always with a humanist and sustainable perspective in mind. �
Raised on American soul jazz, funk and gospel music, the Brooklyn-native Cory Henry is an award-winning organ virtuoso, producer and singer, especially known for his work in Snarky Puppy. On his latest debut album with his own group The Funk Apostles, “Art of Love”, organ virtuoso and now singer Cory Henry demonstrates that he's more than up for the challenge, moving from sideman to frontman with seemingly effortless grace and cool, and this summer Cory Henry is sharing his love of music at the open air venue at Islands Brygge. �

Hot 8 Brass Band (US) 11/7, 21:00 � Fringe Jazz / Pumpehuset For more than 20 years, Hot 8 Brass Band has been one of the most popular and visible funk-style brass bands in New Orleans, travelling the world and kicking down roofs all over. When the eight piece hits the stage, the audience is left with no doubt as to why their official hashtag is “#webrasshard”. They have performed in the HBO series “Treme”, at Roskilde Festival 2009 and recently at BritAwards with George Ezra. �
Blues guitarist Keb’ Mo’ has been a musical force, unbounded by genres, for the past 25 years. With 14 albums he has managed to amass four Grammy Awards and 11 nominations. Keb’ Mo’ is a central driving force in American roots music, whose songs have been interpreted by B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Dixie Chicks, Joe Cocker, Robert Palmer, Tom Jones, Melissa Manchester and Solomon Burke. Meanwhile, he has collaborated with artists like Bonnie Raitt, Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Jackson Browne, Natalie Cole, Lyle Lovett, India Arie, James Cotton, Bobby Rush, Timothy B. Schmit and Marcus Miller. In 2017 he released Grammyawarded “TajMo” in collaboration with legendary Tah Mahal. �
Christian Sands Trio (US) 11/7, 20:00 � Jazz by the Sea / Kulturhuset Islands Brygge At age 30, American pianist Christian Sands is currently one of the most in-demand pianists working in jazz. In the last few years he has toured around the world as a bandleader (including Copenhagen Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz etc.) and recently appeared as a sideman on records by Christian McBride and Gregory Porter. After the one-two punch of Reach and Reach Further, Sands’ dynamic debut and his live/unreleased studio tracks EP follow-up released last year, “Facing Dragons” is Sands’ return to the recording studio with an indestructible band and an unwavering allegiance to the groove. �

Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2019 BLOX Located on the Copenhagen Harbour front, BLOX is part of the city’s cultural circuit of venues with a role in new urban economy. BLOX promotes sustainable urban development in a broad sense and thus forms the setting for activities aimed at the general public as well as more narrowly defined professional networks. BLOX is home to the Danish Architecture Center (DAC) and an urban innovation hub that brings together dozens of other design-related organizations and companies creating solutions for cities. Danish Architecture Center displaya exhibitions focusing on city development and architectural wonders and hosts lectures, talks, city walks and concerts during Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Special venues Factory buildings, museums, old army barracks and more – there is no lack of unusual and fascinating venues at Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Here is a small selection to help you get started Apollo at Kunsthal Charlottenborg Apollo Bar and Apollo Kantine opened in spring 2017 in Kunsthal Charlottenborg, a Danish arts institution on Copenhagen’s central square, that’s been at the cutting edge of contemporary art since it was founded in 1883, neighbouring the Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Brorsons Kirke Located in multiethnic Nørrebro, Brorsons Kirke (Brorson’s Church) is a progressive church and the only church in Denmark with a strictly nonclassical musical profile. Brorsons Kirke joined Copenhagen Jazz Festival as a venue in 2017 and has hosted international visionaries like Pharoah Sanders and Tyshawn Sorey, as well as young Danish acts since then. This year, Brorsons Kirke and Copenhagen Jazz Festival present a spiritual and lyrical concert theme with artists such as Jakob Bro Trio, Palle Mikkelborg and Danish poet Pia Tafdrup. ELVO Sessions The Copenhagen box-making factory ELVO has supplied all rungs of the Danish populace with carton boxes since 1923 – from high society to the general public. During this year’s Copenhagen Jazz Festival, ELVO extraordinarily invites the audience inside to witness a series of night-time concerts in the heart of the traditional factory, recently reopened at Sturlasgade on Islands Brygge. The five summer nights at ELVO are hosted by award-winning musicians Gustaf Ljunggren and Emil de Waal, who will allow ELVO’s traditional craftsmanship and industrial machinery to inspire their curated line of unusual concerts with lots of special guests. Artists: Gustaf Ljunggren / Emil de Waal feat. Maria Faust, Kathrine Windfeld, Loui and Sharin Foo (The Raveonettes).
Kulturtårnet Kulturtårnet (The Culture tower) is a new cultural institution in the harbour of Copenhagen. The bridge tower at Knippelsbro was built in 1937 and has newer before been regularly open to the public. Until now. The tower is run by a group of young people inviting you inside the old copper building to see Copenhagen from a unique viewpoint, while also presenting you with art, music, podcasts, talks and gastronomy. Designmuseum Danmark With a unique location in Copenhagen’s historic centre, near tourist attractions, the harbour boats, design companies and galleries, Designmuseum Danmark is a working archive and the entrance to Denmark as a design destination. It was founded in 1890 by the Confederation of Danish Industries in Copenhagen and the Ny Carlsberg Museumslegat. The museum’s main goal is to communicate the idea of quality within design. By exhibiting exemplary objects and collections, it seeks to raise the level of Danish industrial products and act as a source of inspiration for people working in industry. Skuespilhuset/The Royal Danish Playhouse The Royal Danish Playhouse (a part of The Royal Theater) was inaugurated in February 2008 as the new national stage for the dramatic arts in Denmark. The new Playhouse is beautifully located on the waterfront of Copenhagen's harbour and is already a designated city landmark, planned and projected for over 130 years. Loppen Loppen has existed since 1973, making it one of Copenhagen’s oldest venues. The venue maintains a proud and long-running tradition of presenting great artists before they “make it big”. Groups such as Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, The National and many others have all performed at Loppen while in relative obscurity. Loppen is a collectively run venue situated in Freetown Christiania, housed in an old army hall, with great acoustics, a cozy vibe and a broad concert line-up with room for alternative artists. 5e 5e is a raw old slaughterhouse located in the old meat-packing district in Copenhagen that now functions as a modern community house. The Meat Packing District (da: Kødbyen) on Vesterbro used to be home to Copenhagen’s meat industry and still consists of three separate areas, referred to as the White, Grey and Brown "Meat City" for the dominant colour of their buildings. In recent years, this has changed into a new creative cluster with a happening nightlife, a broad range of high quality restaurants as well as a few excellent venues within a wide spectrum of expressions and genres, especially in the field of electronic music and avant-garde jazz. Insula Music Serving multiple duties as both record store, record label, occasional venue and constant hangout, Insula Records on Nørrebro is something akin to an institution on Copenhagen’s scene for underground music. While Insula always carries a wide selection of both used and new vinyls and cassettes, the “niche” is typically where it’s at here – expect jazz on the “free” end of the spectrum.

At the very start of her musical career, she's already won plaudits from the likes of The New York Times and Pitchfork, and her debut EP, out on Stones Throw Records, is an extraordinary first statement from a singular artist. The self-taught pianist and sometimes rapper soon found himself drawn to the jazz, world music and film soundtracks he discovered through sampling. With his 2019 album "Structuralism", he aligns himself to a greater continuity by adding a societal dimension to his music: “My upbringing has shaped me in a way where I do not know how to communicate. Kruder & Dorfmeister – 25 Years Anniversary (AT) 6/7, 22:00 � DR Koncerthuset, Studie 2 The Austrian electronic pioneers are back at Copenhagen Jazz Festival to celebrate their 25th anniversary with a spectacular audio-visual show. Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister are universally known for their stunning productions and groundbreaking remixes. The genre-defining album “DJ Kicks” (1996) and their follow-up masterpiece “The K&D Sessions” (1998) each sold well above one million copies worldwide and subsequently became cult collector’s items, their leftfield mixes and luscious grooves now considered continually inspiring classics in their own right. Kruder & Dorfmeister were the first major act on the line-up for “Future Sound of Jazz” – a concert theme established during Copenhagen Jazz Festival 1996 to coincide with Copenhagen’s tenure as the European Capital of Culture that year. Future Sound of Jazz carried on as a recurring theme with a marked focus on meetups between jazz and electronica – a course initially set out by Kruder & Dorfmeister and followed by countless artists in their wake. �
Nadah El Shazly (EG) 11/7, 21:00 � ALICE Egyptian singer and composer Nadah El Shazly is one of the leading voices of Cairo’s contemporary experimental scene which also features such artists as Maurice Louca’s Elephantine Band and Dwarfs of East Agouza. Nadah El Shazly began her career in the Egyptian punk scene, but soon began experimenting with electronics. Her dazzling solo debut ‘Ahwar’ (2017) was hailed by The Wire as one of the best albums of the year, and its highly original mix of Arabic roots, experimental rock, visionary jazz and contemporary electronics has led people to draw comparisons to such artists as Björk and Annette Peacock. �
Yussef Dayes (UK) 9/7, 22:00 � Loppen One of the UK's most exciting and innovative young drummers and producers, Yussef Dayes has been deeply involved in jazz as long as he can remember. Best known for work as one half of electrifying duo Yussef Kamaal and with his brothers in United Vibrations, he's been developing his sound since age four when his dad bought him his first drum kit. Born and raised in South East London, as a kid Yussef was practicing nonstop. His father was a bass player in New York in the 70s, and brought home an education's worth of jazz vinyl that the Dayes brothers all grew-up on – Yussef and his bassist brother Kareem would play along to their dad's records for hours at a time. This was the closest he got to formal jazz lessons until he studied under Billy Cobham (Miles Davis' drummer) at the age of ten. Yussef considers this the most impactful thing on his progression. �

Recording and performing prolifically with many collaborators, British saxophonist Evan Parker was a pivotal figure in the development of European free jazz and free improvisation. He has pioneered or substantially expanded an array of extended techniques. At Copenhagen Jazz Festival he yet again joins the ranks of Danish pianist Jacob Anderskov and his Kinetics to celebrate the entire evolution of jazz. �
Hania Rani is a pianist, composer and musician who splits her life between Warsaw, where she makes her home, and Berlin where she studied and often works. She has written for strings, piano, voice and electronics. “Esja” (2019) is her debut solo album and for Rani it is her first, real, personal statement as an artist. At her concert at Huset-KBH she is joined by open-minded Danish string quartet Halvcirkel. �

Philm forges music that bursts forth with unexpected intensity and consequence. Through the band’s insistently sharp, cutting agitation, the music comes more into focus, reaching into the essence, the core, through a process that, with passionate urgency, opens up that core for all to hear. The Berlin-based tenor saxophonist Philipp Gropper is underway with the NYCbased Austrian Elias Stemeseder on piano and synthesizer and the German working class heroes Oliver Steidle on drums and Robert Landfermann on double-bass. �
The newest project of the Slovenian pianist and composer Kaja Draksler unites a colourful group of eight international musicians, all based in Amsterdam. As in her solo performances, Draksler combines composition and improvisation, drawing from a variety of styles, places and historical periods, inspired by the large array of possibilities and talents of the ensemble. Strictly notated material meets free improvisation, while singer-songwriter material is superimposed on the textures inspired by modern classical composition. �

Anywhere you turn, he’s there, either as a sideman (Team Hegdal, Cortex, Lord Kelvin, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra or Susanne Sundfør) or leading and co-leading a good number of acclaimed groups (Bushman’s Revenge, Puma, sPacemoNkey or Astro Sonic), some going to the absolute frontier of jazz, rock and electric experimentalism. With the triple live-release “Live In Europe” he continues his work entirely committed to unplugged music – Gard Nilssen’s Acoustic Unity. �

Delgrés (FR) 8/7, 20:00 � Roots & Jazz / Balders Plads With lyrical references stretching continents and the history of slavery, its heirs and their familial trauma, Delgrés is raunchy roots blues held together by the sound of a distorted Dobro guitar. This is groovy, gutsy “reptile blues” unmatched by most. Delgrés is one of the most exciting acts to come out of the French Roots scene in quite a while and the trio have garnered a reputation as a frothing live act. �

Joshua Abrams & Natural Information Society (US) 10/7, 21:00 � ALICE Since 2011, the visionary and acknowledged American musician and composer Joshua Abrams has toured North America and Europe with a shifting line-up of musicians as ‘Natural Information Society’. The band’s most recent album, Magnetoception, was selected by The Wire Magazine as the #3 record of 2015 & by Pitchfork as the #2 experimental record of 2015. Abrams assembled Natural Information Society around his interests in the Moroccan instrument the guimbri. The band uses traditional and conventional instrumentation to create long-form intricately psychedelic environments, composed and improvised, which join the hypnotic qualities of Gnawa guimbri music to a wide range of contemporary musics and methodologies including jazz, minimalism and krautrock. �

Ronnie Cuber Band (US/DK) 8-10/7, 20:00 � Jazzhus Montmartre A star doesn’t necessarily lose its shine even when it’s been glowing on the international jazz scene since 1959. Baryton saxophonist Ronnie Cuber is the finest proof hereof. Here we have a musician who couldn't care less about creating “fine art”. Instead, Cuber finds all the good stuff in the soul of jazz and puts it out there the way he wants it to sound. His sound is straight, honest and smack-in-your-face, and usually puts a smile on the audience’s faces. Experience him with a star-studded group of Danish musicians across three concerts at Jazzhus Montmartre. �
Sarathy Korwar & UPAJ Collective (UK/IN) 12/7, 22:00 � ALICE Born in the US, raised in India and now based in London, Sarathy Korwar has made a name for himself with an organic and breathtaking fusion of spiritual jazz and Indian music. In 2018 he released the aptly titled ‘My East is Your West’ with his own UPAJ Collective. Recorded live at London's Church Of Sound, the album is a homage to the great musicians of the 60s and 70s spiritual jazz movement, covering the likes of Alice Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders, and Joe Henderson. Korwar plays alongside the UPAJ Collective, a group of highly-versatile musicians who share Sarathy's passion for jazz and Indian music. �

At 81, Hayes has been a towering figure on the American jazz scene since the 1950s as a stable in rhythm sections for greats such as Cannonball Adderley, Horace Silver, Woody Shaw and many others. At Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2019 he joins the Danish guitar talent Jacob Artved for a series of performances with Artved’s transatlantic quartet. �

Maluba Orchestra
Horse Orchestra is entirely its own thing. The band members come from Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Denmark, and they succeed in combining parts of the history of jazz with modern barrierbreaking musical experiments. In Horse Orchestra's universe, classical 1920s New Orleans meet 1960s free jazz as well as hip-hop and modern classical music, and it all ends up in an original, post-post-modern style that has no equivalent on the Nordic jazz scene. In 2018 the band released their third album, "Video EP 2018", a three-part music video about a witch and her dog who fail to conquer the world. �
The three composer – Marilyn Mazur (Miles Davis, Wayne Short a.o.), Fredrik Lundin and Kasper Bai have joined forces to collectively explore their passion for composition, writing music for the 13-piece ensemble Maluba Orchestra. The music emanating from the three composers is a blend of genres – from the lyrical and sacral to the churning and exhilarating. The group’s members are handpicked for maximum diversity with regards to age, gender, background and artistic stylings. Together they create a sprawling musical output, carried by tight orchestral playing and a range of strong, personal voices from the Danish jazz scene. �

The master of New Orleanian funk is back at Balders Plads. Jon Cleary is somewhat of an institution – as the natural heir to artists such as The Meters and Allen Toussaint, Cleary has established himself as one of the biggest stars on the funk scene of New Orleans. The Grammy-awarded “powerhouse” visited Balders Plads and Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 2017 and now Cleary and his group of Absolute Monster Gentlemen return with their unmatched interplay, providing the perfect backdrop for Cleary’s virtuosic piano – tight, funky and fantastic. �
Shake ‘Em Up Jazz Band is an all-female supergroup made up of some of the most sought-after young stars of the New Orleans traditional jazz scene. Playing regularly at Preservation Hall, they feature energetic solos, hot rhythmic breaks, and a pad of great old tunes that are great for swinging out. The band was founded in 2016 and features musicians like trumpet-player Marla Dixon (Shotgun Jazz Band), clarinet-player Chloe Feoranzo (Pokey LaFarge, Postmodern Jukebox) and the Japanese born Haruka Kikuch on trombone (Kermit Ruffins, Original Tuxedo Jazz Band). �

Since Karmen Rõivassepp moved to Denmark for studies at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, she has become an integral part of the Danish jazz scene. With a constant search and hunger for developing the voice as an instrument, she has found her personal style that can be heard on Karmen Rõivassepp Quartet's first album “Dance of Sounds”, which was nominated for a DMA Jazz Award in the category New Jazz Name of the Year 2018. Rõivassepp’s music invites the listener inside a universe of true happiness, quiet melancholia and hidden sorrow, constructed by ensnaring melodies and honest storytelling in English and Estonian. �
Jaques Morelenbaum (BRA) 14/7, 15:00 � Roots & Jazz / Balders Plads Jaques Morelenbaum, cellist, arranger and musical director, is a central figure in Brazilian music. He was the artistic partner of Caetano Veloso for fourteen years in a formidable period which saw the recording of albums as diverse as “Circulado”, “Fina Estampa”, “Livro” and “A Foreign Sound”. He won a Grammy with Tom Jobim and toured the world with Egberto Gismonti. Morelenbaum’s works are innumerable and range from collaborations with Brazilian artists Marisa Monte, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil and Carlinhos Brown, to those with famous musicians from the international scene such as Sting, Cesaria Evora, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Henri Salvador, David Byrne and Bill Frisell. �
Marilyn Mazur “Shamania” Percussionist/composer Marilyn Mazur now presents her large and colorful orchestra, in which she has gathered 10 strong female Scandinavian music profiles plus the Norwegian dancer Tine Erica Aspaas. Shamania began when Copenhagen Jazz Festival suggested to Mazur to revive her old music theatre group Primi Band (from the 1980s with Lotte Anker a.o.). Mazur loved the idea of creating a new large group with some of the fantastic female musicians of today and to present a totally fresh version of the ideas from Primi: a ritualistic, organic, cacophonic and sprawling female community centered on primitive force/voices/rhythm/good energy and movement. �
Magic Spirit Quartet (SE/DK/MA) 13/7, 16:00 � Kongens Have Experience the Moroccan master guembri player and vocalist, Majid Bekkas, in a unique meeting at Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2019 with one of Sweden’s most renowned jazz musicians Goran Kajfeš, Danish drum virtuoso Stefan Pasborg as well as the excellent Swedish pianist Jesper Nordenstrøm. Even though Majid Bekkas knows his guembri to the fullest, he also has a classical music upbringing and is a professor at the music conservatory in the Moroccan capital, Rabat. �

With its raw concrete walls and urban vibe, BLOX serves as the perfect home for three experimental local acts: Jeppe Zeeberg’s funky post-postmodern punkjazz hybrid with rock'n'roll attitude, Selvhenter’s all-female controlled eruption of two drum kits and distorted trombone and alto saxophone as well as the award-winning Scandinavian vocal quintet IKI – a meeting between the voice in its natural, pure form and the electronic, mechanical manipulation of it. �

Selected open air venues: City parks and squares Experience the unique atmosphere as jazz takes over Copenhagen’s historic streets and plazas with loads of free concerts Kongens Have Kongens Have (literally: The King’s Garden) is the oldest park in Copenhagen, founded by the Danish royal family more than 400 years ago. Originally a private royal garden, today the park attracts approximately three million visitors every year, neighboured by the National Gallery of Denmark and the stunning Botanical Garden. Kongens Have is the biggest venue at Copenhagen Jazz Festival measured in both square meters and attendance, drawing spectacular crowds to its annual free concerts on the historic lawns. Vandkunsten Vandkunsten Square was a mill pond during the middle ages and later built by Kong Christian III as the city's first pumping station in the 1600's and named Vandkunsten (the fountain). The current fountain dates from 1910 and is located on one of the oldest crossroads, dating back to 1770 in the center of Copenhagen. The square has traditionally been used for fish markets and flea markets but today it's a wonderful oasis of cafés and a favorite

Nyhavn Nyhavn is one of the most iconic places in Copenhagen and a perfect spot to hang out in the sun or go for a canal tour.
