WELCOME TO COPENHAGEN!

AUTUMN MOTT

YOU'VE JUST ARRIVED IN ONE OF THE HAPPIEST, MOST LIVEABLE PLACES ON EARTH

COPENHAGEN IN AUTUMN BY NICK KARVOUNIS

CARL CHRISTIAN EBBESEN'S FAVOURITE PLACES TO … Relax: Islands Brygge Havneparken Eat: A sausage van or Kødbyen Drink: Sabines on Teglgårdsstræde Take the family: A canal tour Insider’s tip: Hire a bike and explore Whether you are on the hunt for classical tourist sites like Nyhavn and the Lile Mermaid – or more alternave ones like the Meatpacking District and Superkilen – Copenhagen has got it all and offers nothing less than true authencity and coolness.

HELP IS AT HAND

COPENHAGEN IS an aracve travel desnaon with an increasing number of visitors each year. This makes me proud of course, both as the city’s mayor of culture and leisure, but certainly also as a Copenhagener. In addion to being the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen has in recent years also become the capital of world-class design, bold architecture and urban planning, modernday fairy tales, progressive sustainability, and outstanding Nordic cuisine, for which it has earned countless Michelin stars.

Are you looking for specific informaon? Or perhaps just overall inspiraon? Either way, the mul-lingual and friendly staff at Copenhagen Visitor Service – offering everything from individual to digital guidance – are ready to help you make the most of your stay, from their convenient locaon in the heart of the city. The seven addional authorised tourist informaon points clearly marked on the Copenhagen city map also provide professional tourist informaon, making sure you get the very best out of our city. If you are already out exploring, make sure you use our newly-developed mobile city guide, Copenhagen Visitor Guide, which presents you with everything you need to know about

Copenhagen. This will hopefully not only enhance your stay but also make it much more fun and memorable. And in June, we opened a new tourist informaon centre on Oceankaj where 129 cruise ships are expected to dock this summer, along with 162 at Langelinie.

EVEN HAPPIER NOW Autumn officially arrives in the next week, but don't write off the weather just yet! It's rarely chilly in September and October, and Indian summers are becoming increasingly common in these parts. Whether you are planning to enjoy Copenhagen on two wheels, by foot or using our highly efficient public transportaon system, I wish you a happy stay. Once again, allow me to welcome you to wonderful Copenhagen! Carl Chrisan Ebbesen Mayor of Culture and Leisure

While many are impressed by the Danes’ ability to look great in the most neutral and minimalistic of colours – think grey t-shirt, black trousers and ‘80s sneakers – it still takes hard work! THIELE.DK

We have sought out essential items that no fashionconscious Dane will be without as 2017 draws to a close. So join us on a shortcut this autumn and consider the streets of Copenhagen your runway and its shops your outfitter. It’s time to dress like a Dane to blend in and then stand out when you return home!

Long-sleeve dress Malene Birger, Antonigade 10, Cph K; open Mon-Thu 10:00-18:00, Fri 10:00-19:00, Sat 10:00-17:00; bymalenebirger.com  The long-sleeve dress is a staple in achieving an elegant ouit. It gives you enough coverage for warmth, but also sassiness by sll showing some skin. If you are only running errands, you can wear a big sweater over it and wear your favourite sneakers. If you’re on a night out, then you can pair it with some black booes and a leather jacket.

Leather jacket Ganni, Gammel Kongevej 82, Frederiksberg; open Mon-Fri 10:00-18:00, Sat 10:0016:00; ganni.com When it comes to leather jackets, don’t be afraid to splurge. It is a meless item that you could wear almost throughout the year here in Copenhagen. Invest in the quality and the style as you can basically pair it with anything and you will automacally look dashing! But when you’ve found ‘the one’, expect it to be your partner for life – as leather jackets always get beer with age.

But in my opinion, ankle boots are must-haves. They are classics you could wear through different seasons. Looking for the perfect ankle boots is not at all hard as they come in various colours and designs. Great quality ankle boots will last forever, so don’t hesitate from splurging out on a pair.

PARKS AND RECREATION A GUIDE TO COPENHAGEN'S GREEN SPACES BY ELLA NAVARO, JENNA KLEINWORT AND LUISA KYCA

BOTANICAL GARDEN - TY STANGE

HC ANDERSEN said it best when he declared: “Just living is not enough: One must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower…” Now, given how tumultuous the Scandinavian climate can be, sunshine can’t always be guaranteed but some flora certainly can be.

Botanical Garden Øster Farimagsgade 2B, Cph K With over 13,000 different plant species on display, the lush lawns and heaving flowerbeds of the Botanical Garden will keep visitors occupied for a fair while. In the centre of the park lies the Old Palm House, a beauful glass conservatory filled with a mixture of tropical and subtropical plants, making the park a perfect pick for a rainy day. (LK)

Ørstedsparken Nørre Voldgade 1, Cph K Named aer the Danish physicist who discovered electromagnesm, Ørstedsparken is a popular spot with the locals; its collecon of large Chestnut trees makes it a welcoming place for relaxing and reading a book under their enveloping canopy. The park was one in a series of green spaces built on the city’s original ramparts, and part of the old moat now forms a lake running the length of the area. (LK) Valbyparken Hammelstrupvej 41, Cph SV Valby Park is one of the biggest green areas that the city has to offer. Its wide expanse means acvies such as football or kite flying are commonplace here; opt for a leisurely cycle down its charming tree-lined avenues that lead directly to the beach. There are also several playgrounds, a rose garden with over 12,000 blooms, and an accessible garden designed especially for the blind and wheelchair bound. It’s a 20-minute cycle from the city centre, but well worth the trip. (EN)

Fælledparken Edel Sauntes Allé, Cph Ø A favoured spot for the five day DHL race and May 1 celebraons on Internaonal Worker’s Day, Fælledparken is a vast expanse with tranquil lakes and woodland areas. As well as boasng the largest skatepark in Northern Europe, it contains 3.5km of walk ways – perfect for that off-piste adventure. (EN) Frederiksberg Have Frederiksberg Runddel, Cph F A stunning park beloved by the former Danish King, Frederik VI, whose statue welcomes visitors into the gardens. In the summer months it's a welcome mecca for picnickers and young families exploring the 31.7 hectares of waterways and greenery. At its northernmost end, Frederiksberg Have shares a border with Copenhagen Zoo, providing lucky passersby a glimpse into the elephant enclosure. There’s also lots of birdwatching opportunies to be had – the grey heron and Canadian goose are regular visitors – and, curiously, a suetræ (dummy tree) where children who’ve outgrown their dummies leave them hanging defiantly upon branches, aer one last long suck for old me’s sake of course. (JK)

FISKETORVET HARBOUR BATH

Kongens Have Øster Voldgade 4A, Cph K Coming up trumps as the most popular park in Copenhagen – due in part to its close proximity to the tourist-hub Nyhavn and Nørreport staon – is Kongens Have (King’s Garden). Within its 16 regal hectares sit the royal barracks, a sweet scented rose garden and the famous statue of HC Andersen. Wander down the Knight’s and Lady’s Path –  diagonal lime tree avenues that intersect close to the park’s centre – and take a moment to pause; the gardens are lile changed since the 17th century. In mid-summer the park hosts open air cinema and children’s outdoor puppet theatre. (JK)

The very essence of

DANISH CUISINE

21/04/15 17.18

Bør nydes med omtanke

No one really has any idea when it first appeared. And no one knows who invented it, either. But everyone agrees that it is the very essence of Danish cuisine.

Smørrebrød – don’t try saying it – just taste it

Smørrebrød means “open sandwiches” and, as the name suggests, it isn’t just one dish but many. In fact, it embraces a vast number of variations of fish, meat, salads and vegetables and cheese on rye or white bread. Real smørrebrød is a pleasure to the eye and to the palate. But be careful - smørrebrød comes in almost as many different sizes as there are variations and it is more filling than you might think! The Danes eat smørrebrød all year round as a traditional lunch dish. It is also popular on festive occasions together with the family or friends. And smørrebrød is almost always accompanied by Danish beer and schnapps. Copenhagen boasts a whole range of restaurants which specialise in smørrebrød – typical Danish open – faced sandwiches. They are ancient, traditional establishments, often located below street level in cosy basements and cellars. Service at Copenhagen smørrebrød restaurants differs in style from that at normal eating places and can be an experience in its own right! Welcome to the traditional Danish kitchen! Velbekomme – Bon Appetit!

KANAL - KAFEEN Frederiksholms Kanal 18 Tel 3311 5770 www.kanal-cafeen.aok.dk Café Petersborg is one of Copenhagen’s very oldest restaurants with a history which dates all the way back to 1746. The cuisine is typically Danish and the restaurant has always made it an honour to serve good, traditional Danish food at reasonable prices. The menu has extended to include a range of foreign dishes which have become part of the Danish kitchen. Many famous Danes and foreigners have visited Café Petersborg – notably Hillary Clinton.

HUSMANNS VINSTUE Larsbjørnsstræde 2 Tel 3311 5886 e-mail: 1888@husmannsvinstue.dk www.husmannsvinstue.dk

Kanal – Kafeen – Canal Café – located on the canal near Christiansborg parliament building – dates back to 1852. The first owner of the café was a former cook at the royal palace who was given the restaurant as a pension! Canal Café has a genuine old – world Danish atmosphere, with a plethora of old pictures on the walls and low beams! The restaurant is frequented by office workers from the quarter as well as parliament, with families and tourists often in evidence! The Kanal – Kafeen is a bit cramped with seating capacity for only 60 guests, but there’s always room if you are prepared to wait a few minutes for a table – otherwise when weather permits, tables are put out on the pavement overlooking the canal.

CAFÉ PETERSBORG Bredgade 76 Tel 3312 5016 • Fax 3315 5062 www.cafe-petersborg.dk www.spiseliv.dk/petersborg Husmanns Vinstue – a classic luncheon restaurant founded in 1888 – is one of the very few old basement restaurants left in Copenhagen – almost totally unchanged in style during the 125 or so years of its existence! One significant change is that women are allowed to lunch there now – they were forbiden admittance in 1912 by the then proprietress, a ban not lifted until 1981! HUSMANNS VINSTUE is today a traditional Danish smørrebrød lunch restaurant of the highest quality offering homemade specialities composed of fresh raw materials, based on typical old Danish recipes. Opening hours mon-fri: 11.30 am – 6 pm, sat: 12.00 pm – 4 pm. Kitchen: mon-fri: 11.30 – 4pm, sat: 12 – 4 pm. Closed Sundays and Bank Holidays. All credit cards accepted. Evening parties catered for by special advance order.

Café Sorgenfri is a 150-year-old basement restaurant in central Copenhagen, serving classic Danish open sandwiches. Our famous kitchen works every day from 11am to 9pm (Sun 12 noon to 5pm), where as the restaurant only closes at midnight. A lot has been written about Café Sorgenfri as an example of genuine, traditional Copen-hagen culture at its best. However, most of all, the restaurant is popular in the true sense of the word. Café Sorgenfri is known by any Copenhagener and everybody from all walks of life comes here to enjoy a meal, a couple of pints...and the company. Quite naturally, Café Sorgenfri is often completely packed – so please phone in advance for table reservation.

RESTAURANT & CAFÉ NYTORV Nytorv 15 Tel 3311 7706 www.nytorv.dk

Københavner Caféen is a genuine Danish restaurant situated in one of Copenhagen’s small and charming streets – just a couple of steps off the walking street (“Strøget”). Traditional open sandwiches (“smørrebrød”) dominate the lunch menu whilst renowned Danish dishes are served in the evening. The café is noted for its untraditional and impulsive activities for tourists. For example, Santa Claus often appears during the summer months! Københavner Caféen is open seven days a week including public holidays and serves lunch between 12:00 and 17:00 and dinner from 17:00 until 22:30. KØBENHAVNER CAFEEN Badstuestræde 10 Tel 3332 8081 www.kobenhavnercafeen.dk

CAFÉ SORGENFRI Brolæggerstræde 8 Tel 3311 5880 www.cafesorgenfri.dk Restaurant & Café Nytorv is 150 years old and one of the very oldest inns in Copenhagen – established 30-40 years after the Great Fire in 1795 that left most of the capital in ruins. In times gone-by, Restaurant & Café Nytorv was the haunt of drunkards and prostitutes, today its clientele are artists, lawyers, businessmen and good people that just pop into the place for a beer or a good meal – we serve typical Danish-style lunches all day!

presents a nuanced and touching picture of class, gender, friendship and much more besides. It’s a humorous though important insight into the value of education in society and the invisible though often impenetrable boundaries that persist for people like Rita, who seek to learn but have never been in a position to do so. Dawn Wall (see cphpost.dk for our interview) was Burns and director Barry McKenna’s first and only choice for the role.   Formerly a teacher in Britain, Wall started her own nails business after moving here in 2010, but gave it up following her graduation from the Copenhagen Film and Theatre School in 2015 to concentrate on acting full-time. through the run. The result is ‘Planet Trump: The Farce Awakens’, episode 35 of a show that continues to grow in popularity since its humble beginnings in a galaxy a long time ago, and the run continues until early January. “In a galaxy far too close for comfort, the orange planet Trump threatens the universe,” a Star Wars-styled trailer reveals in the customary yellow font we have all grown to love. “Hans Zup and Princess Layer Cake resist the daft side of the Farce and blah, blah, blah, blah,” it continues. By now everyone knows what to expect: adult humour, topical gags, outrageous costumes and characters, upbeat dancing, a live band and above-average vocals. But it as much for the audience interaction than anything else that roughly 40,000 Danish fans return every year for another dollop of craziness. McKee, her dame Andrew Jeffers and leading man David Bateson are masterful at working the material for all it’s worth, with the inevitable ab-libs and breaks from characters consistently delivering the biggest laughs of the night.

CHRISTIAN WENANDE NO CHRISTMAS jaunt to Copenhagen is complete without a visit to the oldest wine bar in the city, the iconic Hviids Vinstue. The legendary establishment is close to celebrating its 300th birthday and has been a popular rendezvous spot for the capital's artists and intellectuals on a daily basis since 1723. But during the winter months leading up to Christmas, it really shines.

The first glass of gløgg is always poured at 11:00 on November 11 and it flows freely throughout the Christmas period – 8,000 litres of it annually, in fact. So pack yourself inside, peel off those layers and tuck into some traditional Danish cheer just like the locals have done over the past centuries. After all, Hviids Vinstue is part of Copenhagen lore, having survived the great fires of 1728 and 1795 and the wars against the British in 1801 and 1807. So chances are it'll still be around this Christmas. INSERT DESCRIPTION

SMØRREBRØD

SMØRREBRØD: FROM MEDIEVAL BREADWINNER TO DANISH STAPLE CAYLYN RICH

19 © MARCUS NILSSON / FOODANDWINE.COM

THE COPENHAGEN POST TOURISM MAGAZINE | CPHPOST.DK In turn, their granddaughter Ida Davidsen introduced the dish overseas, signalling the start of an internaonal success story. Since then professional chefs and regular foodies around the globe have tuned into the smørrebrød sensaon.

Funconal and flavourful SMØRREBRØD BEGAN in the Medieval Ages as a high-energy meal to fuel labourers through long days on the job. They threw leovers on a slab of bread, which was originally only used as a placeholder and immediately discarded aer the toppings were consumed.

The quintessenal starter is a hearty piece of untoasted rye, followed by a buery layer to hold the toppings together and an oponal garnish finish. Fish, meat, vegetables and egg or remoulade dressings are standard choices.

Aenve eaters eventually realised how tasteful the bread became aer absorbing the contents’ flavour. And the modern-day smørrebrød was invented when 19th century workers learned to ulise the bread and buer essenals to placate their appetes.

Sloganeers capitalised on ‘smørrebrød-simplicity’ to bring it to the kitchen table. And they coined smørrebrød ‘edgy-elegance’ to market it to upscale restaurants.

Spreading the joy

Overme, smørrebrød evolved into a universally popular cuisine. Aer the famous Davidsen family first opened their wine bar in 1888, they decided to spice things up by adding smørrebrød to the menu.

Today, smørrebrød is enjoyed as a seasonal appeser and frequents the Danish Christmas and Easter menu.It provides delectable tastes and unforgeable cultural experiences. While in Copenhagen plan a visit to any of the listed spots to embrace this treasured Scandinavian tradion:

restaurants in Los Angeles, New York and Copenhagen. This is in addion to recently compleng his second term as vice-chair of Democrats Abroad – a huge responsibility given that their members live in over 190 countries in the world and garner eight seats at the naonal convenon, which nominates the party’s presidenal candidate.

A PECULIAR anxiety oen hangs over meals before the order is placed. It could be that a friend is ordering something a lile out there, which could either be beer or worse than my own choice. Or do you listen to your inner voice: “I’ve had this before, I really should try something else … but it was so good” – a not uncommon response to the perilous business of ordering a single dish. Insofar as you can never really make a stuck-in-their-ways eater shed their dogmac curse, Café Livingstone gives them a prey good get-out regardless: choose a selecon of small dishes and sample them all. In truth, this isn’t a new concept, though it is an unusual one to find so well-executed. Evaluate the state of your current appete – small or large – and ck the five or seven boxes of the dishes you’d like.

A local touch

BY LARA SPIRIT

For the moment, however, Hale’s commitment appears firmly rooted in the Livingstone project, and his passion for the details of the restaurant are impressively numbered. For one, all the coffee is imported from a single Guatemalan farm, and these close links both help guarantee connuity in high-quality coffee and support the farmer in the process. To a certain extent these exceponal facets to the business-model are reflected in the price – for example, a juice and coffee will cost 70kr. But the detail that goes into each dish renders the price of the five and seven-dish opons far from unreasonable. The restaurant itself seemed bustling with Danes who visit regularly, clearly sufficiently impressed to pay slightly above the standard brunch price.

Exploring the Lakes

Geng through either the small or large spread certainly makes for a long morning, and there might be no beer locaon to do this than sat aside the famous Lakes, speckled sun matching the odd jogger and cyclist who ventures that far north up the Sortedams Sø. What is, and should be, the most impressive element of the experience is the food itself. Danish classics such as baskets of fresh rye bread, cinnamon rolls, buermilk koldskål – accompanied by a seriously good blueberry compote – are present, oen with their own lile twist. This is alongside the more unusual Moroccan sausages, egg soufflés and flatbread with so cheese.

WHOLESOME VIBES AND ABUNDANT CHOICE PHILIP SAVILE

FOR THOSE looking for an alternave from the arguably overrated waterfront restaurants of Nyhavn and their inflated prices, you needn’t search too far and wide. Restaurant Geist sits a stone’s throw away nestled between a string of stylish restaurants at Kongens Nytorv. For an evening of flavorsome food and an unsurpassed atmosphere, be sure to check this one off the list. Renowned Danish celebrity chef Bo Bech opened this project in 2011 with an eye to offer diners a tradional a la carte menu as opposed to the masses of fixed tasng menus that feature so regularly at alternave restaurants. This certainly offers a welcome change, although it can be a lile overwhelming given the sheer number of choices available along with the inevitable food envy from the person eang next to you. The ribs at TGI Fridays really were that good! The restaurant concept of Geist radiates style and sophiscaon. The restaurant itself has to be one of the most exquisitely designed in the area with sleek, modern addions coupled with welcome touches of nature that create a unique monochrome dining area. The first thing one noces upon entering this welcome addion to the New Nordic family is the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. The genuine helpfulness and relaxed approach provides a comfortable seng for the evening.

aspect to note is that the available food, while sll reflecng a vibrant and refined palate, is not as unique and perhaps as daring as some of its competors. With this in mind there are certain opons – including raw zucchini with pistachio & curry and shrimps with tomato & smoked paprika – that unfortunately do come across as a lile ordinary and uninspired, but the likes of the dried breast of a young duck with cherries and the must-have dessert of choice, the salted wasabi cream toffee, more than make up for them. With a menu this size it is impossible to taste everything on offer, which gives the diner a feeling they are entering a lucky dip. We found the best approach is to order three to four separately and share with your partner or friends.

ADOPT A DANISH GRANNY! BY MALENE ORSTED

Smoothly does it For drinks we quickly decided on beer, because it goes well with the rich food, and the restaurant gets its beer from Nørrebro Bryghus (brewery), which rarely disappoints. The only thing to bear in mind is that the beer is stronger than ‘regular’ beer. We took the safe road, and went for the small ones (40cl), and as Camilla pointed out: we could try a few different ones. I started with a dark ale – full and sweet with a ‘secret’ spice mix. My friend went with the Ravnsborg Rød, a full and fruity red ale. We were both happy with our choices.

Packed with pensioners For starters we ordered pickled herring with raw egg yolk, onion and capers on rye bread, and also tartlets with chicken in asparagus. The tartlets were great and creamy with a crispy pay shell. There were a bit too many spring onions for my taste, but that’s a minor detail. The pickled herring on rye bread is one of the most popular Danish dishes, and all in all, it was a thumbs up and very much like my grandmother would have made them – so no complaints! Though located in Vesterbro, there’s nothing hipster about Restaurant Fridas, but that does not mean the place isn’t popular. It was packed on a Thursday night. At a quick glance around the

Llama draws inspiraon from countries including Peru, Argenna and Ecuador and combines these influences with Scandinavian style and ingredients. It beyond succeeds. The creaons stand out from the crowd thanks to their unique style and vibrant, excing flavours. To get the full treatment, opt for the tasng menu, which is a compilaon of the best courses. The colourful floor, ceiling les, oversized candles and communal tables ensure the seng is almost as unique as the menu. Ensure you book first as tables fill up fast. (PS)

Trouser-splittingly good One thing’s for sure: you definitely get value for money at Restaurant Fridas. None of us managed to finish our main course. Not because it wasn’t tasty, but apparently there is such a thing as too much ‘potatoes and gravy’. So sadly, I didn’t get the banana split I had been eyeing on the dessert page since my arrival. It would have been the perfect way to end a nostalgic evening. I will simply have to come back and visit ‘grandmother’ more oen.

Sweet on schnitzel Before going I had read some great reviews of the restaurant’s wienerschnitzel, so that was an obvious choice for one of our main courses. Apparently in Jutland, close to Esbjerg, they call it an ‘elephant’s ear’, or so my friend told the waiter and me. He had never heard the expression, and neither had I. But I have to admit that when

RESTAURANT FRIDAS might be the closest you will ever get to eang dinner at a Danish grandmother’s place. They serve what the Danes refer to as ‘mormor mad’ (grandmother food), and believe me, that’s a compliment. The place was established as a bodega in 1954, but in 2000, mother and daughter Lene and Camilla Palmberg turned the place into a restaurant. I was not surprised to find out the place is family-run. The homey feeling is in every detail, and the food is tradional Danish in a way only the older generaons in a family seem to master. To sck with that thought, I imagine you’re beer off keeping your calorie counng at home, because grandmother’s sauce is made using plenty of butter.
