GENERAL STRATEGY We started by trying to understand the crux of the problem. To solve the problem we needed some tools, which we think would help us creating the unit strategy. We are thinking that the main problem of the area is the chaos caused mainly by the unorganized situation of itsfeatures. We used the aspects obtained from the area itself as tools while concentrating on building a unit strategy.

CHAOS The chaos in the area is present with a lot of different faces. What we decided to highlight as Chaos are the elements that with our strategy can be tranformed from a caotic view, to a more clear organized version of them. The four elements present here, in their chaotic distribution, are the same elements that we want to use as tools , and so as a way to operationalize the reduction of the chaos itself.

CORE FUNCTION I: AGRICULTURE 1

2

Agricultural Field

In 2013 started a project, Cascinet, for the requalification of cascina Sant’Ambrogio. Different activities already take place here: urban gardens, agricultural workshops, activieties of integration with immigrants.

1

There is a main function which is related to the landscape. In the first unit, the core function is the agriculture, related to the strong presence of agricultural fields.

T0 2018

TF 2030

2022

HUB: CASCINA SANT’AMBROGIO 2

The role of Cascina Sant’Ambrogio in the area will be to control the agricultural activities, the organization of the urban garden and the redistribution of the products cultivated. The activities of the Cascina will be focusing also on the integration and interaction of the different communities involved.

SYNERGETIC FUNCTIONS 3

4 5

6

The site, in which the works for M4 started in 2016 and supposed to finish for the 2020-2022, is situated on a side of Viale Forlanini. An abandoned and fenced area close to the small community of the park and the M4 workers residences. The ex military center and ex C.I.E. is partially abandoned since the 2014.

The space is an undefined green area.

7

This grass field, located on the other side of Via Corelli, containing recycling spaces.

8

The area is mostly filled with residential buildings.

9

The lands devoted to the temporary residences for M4 workers until the 2020-2022, is situated in between different agricultural realitises.

3

4

We consider this as a strategic site because of its position being the connection between the neighbourhood Forlanini and the Park. The idea is to make community gardening where different communities can work together. The lot is connected with other activities of the hub due to the position it has, will be destinated as vertical gardening space used by the communities nearby. It will, in this way, regain an importance with an agricultural function.

5

The existing infrastructure presence in the space makes it possible to have green houses, which can be used mainly for the domestic and more delicate plants, and is a huge opportunity to start producing immidiately.

6

It is mainly for places with a not extended area to grow vegetation. The purpose of the area is to educate people in “how to cultivate” in trial gardens. It’s a first step before cultivating in agricultural lands.

7

We will use this area as a lab in which new species can grow, and to test new products from the raw materials present in the area and to generate fertilizer from organic waste.

8

An agricultural experiment, to try to enlarge the knowledge about “urban agriculture” could be done in the close neighbourhood with roof-top vegetable gardens.

9

Due to its location being close to the entrance , the area will be used as a market place for the products produced inside the area. The rest will be used as urban gardens for the communities.

COMMUNITIES The communities can co-work in the creation of a more open and natural enviroment. Some of these participants are already existing in the ares, while some other can start to interact thanks to the new opportunities provided by the hub.

SYNERGETIC FUNCTIONS II Public garden where people can start to relate themselves with gardening, planting their own trees to create a space for the community, usable also for educational purposes, in relation with the 5 senses.

10

Underused Space

10

11

Underused Space

11

Our aim is to create an entrance close to the important sports center, filled mostly with fruit trees.

12

Underused Space

12

We consider this as a strategic site because of its position being in the connection between the Idroscalo and the Park. The idea is to make urban gardening where different communities can work together.

13

Underused Space

13

Our aim is to create an urban gardening point close to the common piazza which will be created near the exposition center.

HUB: CASCINA MONLUE 2

Cascina’s role is to act as a control point where the activities inside the area are managed. Also will take charge in the expansion process of the Romantic Park. Cascina is already working for the people in need by providing health care, and will be still responsible furthermore in the project.

SYNERGETIC FUNCTIONS 3

The area is an half functioning industial site which acts as a service point for cars. Most of the buildings in this area are empty.

3

Because of the reason that half of these buildings are empty, we will focus on indoor relaxation activities in the available areas. We consider this area as a calm co-working space where visitors can work with connection with nature. It is going to be the next hub as soon as it starts to work properly.

4

Cascina Casanova is located in the Forlanini park and it’s a public property. It reflects the character of the "court" type which is a version of Lombardian cascina. It is a public territory.

4

Our aim is to use it for artistic workshops for the communities of the area in collaboration with Ateiler Forte. They will participate in the beautification process of the area, such as working on the walls of the railway.

5

Cascina Taverna is located within the Forlanini Park, near the Casanova farm, which is a larger agricultural field. The cascina is a public property but now abondend.

5

The ruins of the old cascina will be used for the dogs mainly located in the canile. The plan is to use it as a space in the training process, and at a certain point, as an interaction place.

6

Parking lot

6

The parking lot will be used to create spaces where open air events can be held, when available. The hub will be in charge of these activities.

COMMUNITIES The communities in this area are mostly temporary, and they are; The visitors of the park, The residents of Cascina Casanova, The other neighbourhoods of the city. The visitors of the park from the city can enter and experiment it through new entrances and can get informed about the area.

SYNERGETIC FUNCTIONS II 7

The area located in between two railways is an unused area, because of the difficult connections and the undefined use of it.

7

Due to it’s location being close to the city and to the new metro line the area can be used as an entrance to the park, while helping to connect the city with the area with autochthonous vegetation.

8

Novegro has as a buffer zone a serie of lands unused, uncultivated and with a limited view through them. These lands, with the circonvallazione, forbid a direct connection between Novegro and Idroscalo.

8

The nearness of the land to the Idroscalo, allows them to be a buffer zone, and at the same time, a connection between the two units. We want to keep the natural element in them, creating a reminiscence of the Romantic Park.

9

Our aim is to make the sport activities that are already existing in the area more dense and stronger.

10

The location of this land, makes it interesting as a connection betweeen the two indentities of the park. Our aim is to recreate a romantic spirit into the urbanized identity of Novegro, with a public park that can be a peaceful stop between the two realities.

11

Romantic Memory area is a part for the park with a specific kind of vegetation.

9

10

11

Idroscalo Milano is in between the municipalities of Segrate and Peschiera Borromeo. There are various sportive activities and attraction points under the control of this association. This lot of land is the first one that we met coming from the Romantic Park. The municipality of Segrate and the Parco esposizioni Novegro are bargaining it.

Undefined space belonging to the public authorities.
