HIGH DENSITY NETWORK DEVICES

Riedel Communications designs, manufactures and distributes pioneering realtime video, audio, data, and communications networks for broadcast, pro-audio, event, sport, theatre and security applications. The company also provides rental services for radio and intercom systems, event IT solutions, fibre backbone and wireless signal transmission systems that scale easily for events of any size, anywhere in the world. Riedel is headquartered in Wuppertal, Germany, and employs over 450 people in 19 locations throughout Europe, Australia, Asia and the Americas.

HD BROADCAST INSTALLS ROUTING INFRASTRUCTURE IN OB VAN

Germany’s HD Broadcast recently completed a major upgrade of its flagship HD1 mobile production truck and a key objective was to install an all-new real-time signal and communications network. HD Broadcast, a major provider of live production and outside broadcasting services, needed a signal transport, routing and communications solution that could offer maximum flexibility and interoperability, as well as the reliability to drive a high-pressure live production environment. To meet these requirements, HD Broadcast chose the MediorNet realtime networking solution from Riedel Communications.

HD Broadcast’s HD1 is a 12-metre, fullscale transmission van suitable for any live or recorded HD broadcast. To date, HD1 has covered a wide range of live events, including Bundesliga games (for Sportcast, Sky, and ARD) and concert productions such as the performance by Marius MüllerWesternhagen for MTV Unplugged.

HD Broadcast has upgraded its HD1 mobile production truck with Riedel Communications’ MediorNet real-time network.

DECENTRALISED ROUTER WITH SEAMLESS COMMUNICATIONS

Onboard HD1, three MediorNet Compact Pro frames and six MediorNet MicroN high-density media distribution network devices are connected over a 10 Gbps optical fibre network to create a fully redundant, decentralised routing matrix. Working in combination with HD Broadcast’s existing Riedel Artist digital matrix intercom system, the highly scalable new infrastructure combines fully integrated signal transport, routing and processing with pristine communications.

MediorNet Compact is a modern stagebox that provides the flexibility of a true realtime media network at the cost of simple multiplexing point-to-point products. Enabling cost-effective fibre signal transport for 3G/HD/SD-SDI video, audio, data and intercom, MediorNet Compact streamlines the infrastructure of any mobile production while opening the door to 4K production. Integrated signal-processing capabilities, including frame synchronisation, frame store and embedding/de-embedding, help to reduce the number, weight and cost of required components within HD1.

The MicroN high-density distribution network devices work in tandem with the MediorNet Compact frames to create a decentralised routing system that distributes signal load, takes advantage of flexible node placement and eliminates any single point of failure to create a viable alternative to a traditional, monolithic router. In addition to full video router functionality, MicroN also offers powerful signal transport and integrated processing features at each port. All of this adds up to a powerful, versatile, and highly scalable solution for HD1’s routing of SDI signals.

Seamlessly integrated with MediorNet, Riedel’s Artist serves as an advanced modular communications platform with the power and versatility to address HD1’s full range of intercom requirements. The Artist’s fibrebased network provides a decentralised infrastructure that can simplify the distribution of audio while ensuring crisp, reliable intercom communications.

FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE

HD Broadcast completed the networking upgrade of OB HD1 in only three days thanks to MediorNet’s ease of integration. The new MediorNet-based network infrastructure gives the production truck greater flexibility and significantly increased capacity through higher bandwidth and additional connectivity options. The fibrebased network also allows HD Broadcast to minimise cabling, setup and logistics expenses, resulting in significant cost savings. In addition, HD Broadcast has strengthened its commitment to mobile, flexible productions and is well-equipped for the future.

“We are very impressed with the robust capabilities that MediorNet Compact, MicroN, and Artist offer us. With their outstanding quality and reliability, these solutions have set the standard for futureproof networking,” said Constantin Novotny, CEO of HD Broadcast GmbH. “MediorNet’s integrated signal management has enabled us to deploy decentralised routing capabilities with distributed system intelligence — an ideal foundation on which to move towards an IP-based networking infrastructure and support future 4K productions.”
