4K AND HDR IN FOCUS

Highest product quality combined with German engineering ensures reliable, troublefree transmission for every frame – during ingest, storage, mastering, playout, encoding, transmission and when testing. HDR, IMF, 4K/ UHD, HEVC and IP are just a few of the new technologies that the broadcast industry has to consider when it comes to modernisation. Broadcasters must also ask themselves the following questions: What technologies must be taken into account? Is the architecture interoperable and open for new technologies? Are the workflows ready for HDR?

Rohde & Schwarz has therefore expanded its product portfolio. Its leading encoding and multiplexing solutions are used in many test operations and initial UHD TV services. The R&S AVHE100 is the world’s first headend that supports the statistical multiplexing of several UHD services in one multiplex.

The R&S Venice ingest and playout platform now includes the R&S Venice Control application. R&S Venice Control is ingest software for controlling complex multicamera recordings. It makes it possible to record upto 16 independent channels.

The latest Release 6.1 of the R&S Clipster mastering station focuses on HDR, expanded colour scales, HFR and localisation workflows. For localisation, R&S Clipster provides IMF subtitling and basic compositing. Floating point processing and colour depth ensure highly precise conversion within the brightness range, essential for HDR mastering workflows.

versatile failover mechanisms, event scheduler, DVB-T2 gateway, SFN inserter and more. The SPTS function meets the requirements for a pure encoder exchange. The R&S AVHE100 architecture allows headend operators to replace existing encoders or to build entirely new multiplex systems employing cuttingedge technology.

Recently, pay TV provider Sky Deutschland went on air with live broadcasts of soccer matches in UHD quality as additional content. From ingest and storage to playout and headend, Rohde & Schwarz signal processing solutions were used. This workflow includes the R&S AVHE100. Broadcasting the UHD picture signals to viewers via the existing infrastructure requires strong data compression based on HEVC technology that does not impair picture quality. After a rigorous selection process, Sky procured the HEVC encoder from the Munich-based Rohde & Schwarz group. In comparison with other manufacturers’ products currently in the market, the R&S AVHE100 encoding and multiplexing platform clearly provides the best picture quality at the intended data rate.
