Demand for reliable connections is constantly growing and users want to enjoy the same connectivity that they experience at home, when they are at sea. This applies to VoIP services, access to corporate networks, video streaming, email access and other data-centric applications.

May 2016 saw the commercial launch of the THOR 7 maritime data communication service offering 20/3 Mbps of connectivity on 60cm antennas and even higher bandwidths from 1m antennas through to the Ka-band HTS payload.

THOR 7 serves the busy shipping lanes of the North Sea, North Atlantic/Norwegian Sea, Baltic Sea, Black Sea, Caspian Sea, Red Sea, Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean.

Supported by the iDirect Velocity platform with up to 25 simultaneously active spot beams, THOR 7 offers automatic and seamless spot-beam handover, assuring continuous connectivity across the entire satellite footprint and delivering costeffective solutions and higher speeds for users with smaller antennas. THOR 7 also provides Ku band broadcast capacity for the CEE and is used by Telenor’s Occasional Use division to provide Ka band IP services into Europe and the Middle East. The company is uniquely placed to service the needs of all of its customers thanks to the combination of extensive ground-based systems – operated from the main teleport in Norway – and Telenor’s high-powered satellite coverage across Europe from its 1° West orbital position.

A recent survey reported that over 100 Telenor customers voted them as the number one in service reliability. The company strategy is not only to deliver high performance connections but consistent and efficient operational support which is why it hires the best sales engineers and technicians to support customers.

Telenor Satellite’s business is made up of 60% broadcast, 30% datacomms and 10% occasional users. Therefore a large proportion of content that it delivers is high quality direct-to-home (DTH) satellite television to audiences throughout Europe, with close to 18 million TV households reached in CEE and the Nordics. Telenor Satellite transmits more than 700 TV channels and hundreds of radio channels via its 1° West position.

A comprehensive portfolio of broadcasting

services covers the entire distribution process including encoding, multiplexing, uplinking, satellite capacity and monitoring during transmission, as well as contribution services via Telenor’s own terrestrial media network.

Additionally an extensive Occasional Use services team has a reputation for providing the best solutions for live news and sports events, in a satellite capacity or as a fully managed service. From its teleport in London, Telenor offers live streaming, webcasting, playout, store and forward, transcoding media services, hosting, downlinking, uplinking and turnaround solutions, with ongoing fibre or IP connectivity.

pARTnERS ARE KEy

Telenor’s VSAT satellite communication services for maritime, oil and gas and land-based applications throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa are achieved by close working relationships with its distributors, resellers and service providers.

As wholesalers to this market the company can deliver high-quality, two-way satellite services across a wider coverage area. In November 2016, Telenor launched a self-service online portal allowing customers to order, change, terminate and view their services. This has improved efficiencies in support allowing the company to work on new initiatives. 2016 was an important milestone but 2017 will be a landmark year when Telenor hopes to capitalise on the capabilities of its new service platforms.
