WHAT’S NEW FOR 2022? Gill Sherry
Traditionally, interior design was something only professionals were entrusted with. People would pay a premium for expert advice when it came to transforming their homes and, in turn, impressing their friends. But, thanks to the power of technology, more and more home owners are trying their hand at the art and science of interior enhancement.
Black Accents
The number of interior design and home renovation accounts has increased considerably on Instagram and with step-by-step tutorials available on YouTube, it’s no wonder savvy home owners are choosing to carry out their own home styling and improvement rather than paying someone else to do it for them.
Textures
Unsurprisingly, the demand for office-related paraphernalia rose dramatically in 2021 with many people choosing to work from home and, therefore, adapting their living space accordingly. Bedrooms were converted into studies, lofts into studios and garages into meeting rooms. As a result, the biggest trends when it came to interior design were versatile spaces, natural lighting and ‘Japandi’ simplicity (a combination of Japanese minimalist style with Scandinavian tones).
So what is predicted for 2022? House Plants
Indoor plants are known to have a calming effect and, as a result, have a positive influence of our wellbeing. From a prickly cactus to a glossy rubber tree, these evergreen air purifiers are a must-have for 2022. Alternatively, you could take the easy option and go for faux! Fake plants are built to last and will never outgrow their living space. Plus, you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference!
Living Room Bars
These have always been popular in Kuwait but it seems the rest of the world has finally caught on! Whether readymade and free-standing or purpose-built and fitted into an alcove, home bars are ideal when it comes to entertaining. Clever use of mirrors can add to the appeal, reflecting light and adding sparkle to bottles and glasses. Add a quirky ice-bucket for fun!
Used correctly, black accents can really accentuate a room, adding a touch of understated elegance. But choose wisely and don’t go overboard! A black trim on a natural rug or a single black lamp shade in a neutral lounge should be all you need. Add an ebony vase or an onyx plant pot and you’ll create a chic and classy contrast. Attention to detail is key when it comes to interior design and textures are one of the most important details of all. Sherpa, velvet and boucles are the next big thing in fabrics and guaranteed to add a touch of luxury to your home. Add velvet cushions to your couch, a sherpa fringe to your ottoman, or invest in a cozy boucles throw for your favourite chair. A trip to the fabric souq could be imminent!
Vintage
Supply chains are predicted to be problematic in the coming months so certain items may be hard to come by. Buying secondhand may not be everyone’s preference but there’s a lot to be said for recycling and upcycling. Besides, second-hand is such an outdated expression! Vintage items are to be celebrated and finding that one-off, unique piece of furniture can be really satisfying. What will your one-of-a-kind find be?
Natural Materials
If vintage is really not your thing, buy for longevity instead. Timeless pieces that are made to last are the next best thing so opt for natural wood over cheaper alternatives. Natural stone like granite and marble are tipped to be on trend in 2022 along with seagrass, shells and feathers for those all-important finishing touches.
Green
Did you know, green is the new grey? Grey has been an interior design favourite for far too long and has finally been knocked off its perch by its green cousin. Green is associated with nature and, therefore, represents calmness and contentment. Whether you choose olive green for your walls or racing green for your kitchen units, green is the colour for 2022! So, are you ready to transform your home into a more aesthetically pleasing environment? Interior design can be so much fun and seeing the end result is extremely rewarding. With a little planning and research, you can achieve the look that will be the envy of your neighbours! Go on, give it a try! www.cpmagazine.net
