EVERYTHING’S ROSY! Gill Sherry

I

t will come as no surprise to learn that more roses are sold during the month of February than in any other month of the year. St. Valentine’s Day is celebrated by millions annually on February 14th and has been recognised as the official day of love and romance for centuries. With keen romantics eager to show their love and appreciation to the object of their affection, it’s no wonder the demand for roses is at its highest at this time of year. However, St. Valentine’s Day isn’t the only reason for the spike in rose sales. The month of February also plays host to Rose Day. Rose Day is celebrated by youngsters worldwide but is particularly popular in India where young adults declare their feelings for their loved one by gifting a rose. It is a joyous occasion which bears witness to blossoming new friendships and relationships. Many people believe more can be said with a single rose than by any number of spoken words. As the rose is the official flower of love and red is associated with love and passion, it goes without saying that red roses are the most popular choice when it comes to both Rose Day and St. Valentine’s Day. But what do the other colours signify? It’s useful to know when gifting roses that pink represents happiness and grace, yellow symbolises friendship and warmth, and white is indicative of purity and innocence. I must admit, white roses are my absolute favourite and I never tire of their fragrance or beauty. But when it comes to our senses, the appreciation of roses is not just limited to our eyes and nose. Our tongues can also benefit from this versatile bloom. Rose petals can be added to salads and are often used in desserts and cakes. Rose syrup can be used to make marshmallows and rose flavoured ice-cream. And rose hip is a popular ingredient in jam, jelly and marmalade. As well as the advantage of taste, rose hip is also considered one of the richest plant sources of vitamin C so it’s beneficial for health and wellbeing too. And let’s not forget rose water. Rose water has long since been considered a natural aid for headaches and migraines as well as offering relief from sunburn. It also boasts health benefits for men and women alike. Adding rose water to your bath will soften and freshen your skin. Massaging rose water into your hair

will leave it softer and shinier. You can use rose water as a natural make-up remover, a refreshing face mist or a skin moisturiser. It’s also perfect as an after-shave or an ingredient in aromatherapy. And the good news is, you can make it yourself! Rose water is made by steeping rose petals in water. Whilst rose water is now produced on a commercial scale using modern machinery, it was traditionally made by hand and this method is still practiced by artisans in Iran, Oman and other Middle Eastern countries. The rose petals are heated in water under controlled heat. The steam is condensed and the water droplets are collected as rose water. Its value is in its purity so beware of chemically enhanced substitutes. Having already mentioned smell, sight and taste, I cannot neglect sound. This is not the most obvious of our senses to benefit from the rose but with so many poets (famous and otherwise) inspired by this beloved flower, it most definitely deserves a mention. The Scottish poet, Robert Burns, wrote ‘A Red, Red Rose’ way back in 1794 and W. B. Yeats penned ‘The Lover Tells of the Rose in His Heart’ in 1892. More recently, song titles and lyrics are based on the beautiful bloom, ‘Bed of Roses’ by Bon Jovi and ‘Kiss from a Rose’ by Seal, to name just two. Whatever your reason for buying roses, you should certainly have plenty of choice. There are literally, hundreds of different types of rose. When I was a child, I remember studying my grandfather’s book of roses. I would spend hours memorising the names, admiring the colours and then choosing my favourite, only to return the next day to start all over again. One day I would select my favourite based on colour, the next it would depend on the shape. Another day, I would choose the prettiest name, the next I would pick the one with the most petals. Decades later, I’m still unable to name my absolute favourite variety. The roses in my grandfather’s garden ranged from apricot, to violet to cherry. With such an abundance of colour, I often wonder why I still prefer white. One thing’s for sure, my love of roses has never died. In fact, to use Emma Goldman’s wise words, ‘I’d rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck.’ And not just in February! www.cpmagazine.net

Making a Sustainable Transition with Joseph & Alexander Sustainability is no new subject on the global agenda. In the context of fashion it refers to clothing that does not put undue strain on the environment right from the harvesting of raw materials to end use. Speaking strictly from an environmental perspective, creating any type of clothing sustainably involves farming, harvesting, processing and transport of materials without the use of harmful pesticides, toxic dyes or fossil fuels. The idea may sound rather simple, but the process isn't. And nor is the transition for consumers. It isn't only designers who must change their production habits, it's a sticking point for shoppers and their purchasing habits, too. Reportedly topped only by oil, the fashion industry is contributing to major environmental destruction – mainly because consumers insist on buying so many clothes at such cheap prices. Alternatives do exist. The solution lies in buying less and choosing better quality items that are made as ethically as possible. With this in mind, keeping sustainability at the forefront of decision making has found its way to the heart of Alana Sorokin's life's work. Born of a deep love and respect for the ocean, and brought to life by the quirky, marine-inspired designs of talented street artists, Sorokin launched chic childrenswear brand Joseph & Alexander in 2018, with recycled fabrics made from ocean plastics. If you consciously decide to purchase a garment made using a recycled material derived from plastic waste or an exciting new fibre, such as cruelty-free leather made in a lab, you are supporting start-up companies creating new markets, and avoiding the toxic impacts associated with conventional textiles. Conceptualised to ignite curiosity within the minds of its youngest wearers, each piece is designed to spark an "educational conversation" around critical world issues. Championing environmental action is at the heart of the brand. Operating consciously using recycled fabric from ocean plastics, eco-friendly ink and reusable packaging, each collection depicts awareness-raising narratives of minimising our environmental footprint, and having fun whilst doing so. Switching to more ethical fashion options does take forethought, but the health and survival of the planet depends on it. 12

Hi, please introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi, I’m Mai AlAhmad. I’m the owner of Life Skills Academy.

Tell us about your education.

I have a bachelor degree in Business Administration from Kuwait University.

How and when did the idea of Life Skills Academy originate?

It started in 2012. I thought about the idea when I saw the kids around me who needed courses like the ones I now do.

When was Life Skills Academy established and what difficulties did you face during the establishment phase?

Life Skills Academy was established in January 2017. I faced a lot of difficulties but with determination and my love for the thing I’m doing I overcame these difficulties. It took a lot of time and hard work but thankfully, it was worth it.

How has the response been so far?

People loved the idea and liked the place. Some even said they wished they had found it sooner. I’m really happy with the feedback so far.

What are the timings of the academy and which days do you open?

The academy is open from 2pm till 10pm every day. If there were any school trips we would be open in the morning.

Do you have special programs during the summer?

Yes, we have courses for girls from ages 3 to 17, and courses for boys from ages 3 to 10. It includes all the training courses we give.

What exactly is Life Skills Academy and what does it offer? It’s an academy that provides training sessions for kids on basic life skills such as cooking, organization, etiquette, art, sewing and skin care. The academy is a complementary element to parents, so their child builds more life skills

Tell us about your staff? How do you select them?

They are teachers that have certificates and experience in the field of expertise they work in.

What are your future plans for the academy?

To expand and have one branch in each province of Kuwait so we would be in easy reach for all kids in all areas.

What is your biggest challenge now?

Getting the trust of the parents and the interest of the applicants.

What is your message for young people out there?

We provide something different that’s not available in schools or camps or any other academies. At Life Skills Academy we provide you with a life experience that you will enjoy learning.

HYPERPIGMENTATION by:

Hyperpigmentation can be caused by sun damage, inflammation or other skin injuries, including those related to acne vulgaris. People with darker skin tones are more prone to hyperpigmentation.

age spots, acne scars and melasma. Hydroquinone is known to reduce hyperpigmentation but there are also many concerns regarding its safety. Fortunately, in the past few years, more natural alternatives have started to come up and it’s now very easy to find high quality products from reputable brands. While we appreciate the industry’s push towards natural ingredients, it’s becoming more difficult to decipher which ingredients actually work. Some of the skin lightening ingredients we preferred were natural extracts such as arbutin, kojic acid, niacinamide (Vitamin B3) and bearberry. Most of these ingredients are tolerable by the majority of skin types and don’t have the same side effects of hydroquinone.

Walid Khuraibet

Asya Alseayleek

Walid Khuraibet is an Insurance Agent and Personal Financial Advisor. Until two years ago, he owned and operated an advisory agency. He describes his decision to sell the business as one of the hardest he’s ever had to make. Currently, he is co-owner of The Sanctuary, a first-class Ladies Lounge in Kuwait. His inspiration comes not from a person, but from the desire to do the right thing. Asya Alseayleek is the founder and CEO of The Sanctuary, a first-class Ladies Lounge in Kuwait providing solutions for life and business. She enjoys learning from books, gaining experience from different projects and then passing her knowledge to others (especially women of all ages) to empower them. Asya is a happy wife and mother of a ten-year-old daughter.

Please tell us about your academic backgrounds: Walid: Graduated with a BS in Management from Southern Illinois University. Earned my MBA from Phoenix. I owned and managed an advisory agency targeting financial and insurance clients where we advised over four thousand contracts and over three million dollars in revenue. I sold my company two years ago. Asya: After getting my degree in health information administration, I went to the USA to pursue my passion of management and change management. Furthermore, I took courses in HR, leadership, project management, life and business coaching.

One would imagine that both of you probably discuss business issues a lot at home too. Does that happen? Walid: Yes. Families should be multilayered in their relationship. We discuss health issues, books, concepts, relationships and business. Asya: It happens all the time, especially because we have our own business together. I run The Sanctuary daily operations and he handles the financial issues, yet we brainstorm and plan almost everything together. We also consult each other on our clients’ projects.

How and where did the two of you meet? Walid: A semi-blind type of date arranged by a couple of lady cousins. Asya: Through my friend from a reading club, Amina Alattar.

How are household responsibilities divided? Who is the boss at home? Walid: Simple - she tells me what to do and I do it! Asya: Our wonderful house manger handles most of the responsibilities, such as the groceries, cooking, laundry etc. At the end of the day, Walid and I both have a say on how things are run in the house.

As a professional, what are the qualities you admire in your spouse? Walid: As a professional, I’m astonished by her networking skills, her ability to distinguish opportunities and most importantly her follow-up skills. Asya: I love the way he plays with numbers. He is simply charming and makes an excellent first impression. He is also very calm during business discussions and negotiations. He’s a good listener. Most importantly, he is a decent, honest man who refuses to trick others. Where do you concur and where do you differ from each other? Walid: Our basic life philosophy is similar in that we both believe that hard work transforms to luck when the opportunity showsup. We may differ in our approaches to relationships. She is the romantic type and I’m the idealistic type. Asya: We are both original, independent and have developed our own set of values and way of understanding the world around us. We are both courteous and like to socialize. We have the same business aspirations. We complement each other in so many ways. He enjoys numbers and formulas while I enjoy reading. Do you think being friends with your spouse is an important part of marriage? Walid: Yes! Being friends is the foundation of long lasting relationships. Friendship transforms itself to love when the partners are friends and not enemies. Asya: I can’t be married to someone whom I can’t be friends with. We like each other’s company and feel very much comfortable around each other. We have so many common hobbies that guarantee us quality time together and a comfortable silence. How do you handle a work-life balance and challenges in a dynamic work environment? Walid: It’s important to me to compartmentalize my life environments. I mention events to Asya but discuss them only if she expresses desire in the event. I don’t get disappointed if she does not want to listen. Asya: It is not easy for me, but with Walid being around, he tends to calm things for me and make me slow down and take a break every now and then. I also have an activity schedule for the family that will guarantee us a healthy work-life balance. Most importantly, we designed a business where we work together to make sure we spend more time enjoying each other’s company. When do you spend time with each other? How do you unwind? Walid: A good movie night, quite meal and/or a staycation. Asya: The weekend is the time when we unwind as it is an unplanned free day. We visit the family and do other activities in Kuwait, like painting. What is the best gift you received from each other? Walid: She took me on a week-long trip to Thailand, a place I never visited before. Asya: A day trip to Dubai for my birthday. Any memorable holidays? Walid: Yes, our first trip together was our honeymoon. We went on a European road trip visiting several countries. Asya: Our trip to Thailand. I will never forget the long talks that we had in our fine resort. It was magical.

20

FEBRUARY 2019

Has there been any significant event that has changed your marriage? What was the event? How did it change your relationship? Walid: We met two years ago and married a month later. All the significant events we experienced were shared decisions. I hope this sharing continues between us forever. Asya: Walid told me from the start that if, for whatever reason, I am not comfortable with anything and he can change it, he would do it without me having to explain why. He proved that the first time I asked him. This made me realize that this man will honor his word and that I am in a safe relationship where I can be myself. How do you manage your time together? Do you have any time left over for your marriage at all? Walid: My time management is based on priority. Family first, work second. Asya: We make sure we have all our meals together as a family and we share our schedules along the day. Bedtime chat is an essential part of our day. We have other friends that we go out with. What are the challenges of being two powerful people at the top of your professional game? Walid: Currently we are in the process of the soft opening of The Sanctuary, our first class ladies lounge. Dealing with investors, financiers and government bureaucracy is a complex process. The market research, authoring the feasibility study, conducting the pilot program and analyzing all the above is time consuming and takes away from personal life. Asya’s support and encouragement is vital in this process. Asya: I believe we redefine power in our marriage. Powerful also means a win-win situation. I value Walid’s experience and judgment and his calm way of presenting it. He is a strong, wise and funny man who makes sense most of the time. What have been your most challenging moments in life? Walid: My most personal challenging moment was the Iraqi invasion in 1990. I scrambled to participate in the fight against that terror. On a professional level, selling my company was a very hard decision to make. The price was right and the time was right and yet selling it felt like selling my child. Asya: As anybody else, I’ve had my share of challenges. But the most recent one was retiring and having my own business. I believe it turned out very well. How do you motivate each other during tough times at work? Walid: Asya is a self-motivated person. I think what she needs from me is to rephrase the goals and the big picture. Asya: Getting back to basics is very important. We know that at the end of the day, our family is first and we will get through things no matter what. In fact, we enjoy challenges and we learn from them. Who’s your inspiration professionally? Walid: My inspiration is not a person. My inspiration comes from my desire to do the right thing. Asya: Any successful happy person is an inspiration for me. What have you learnt from each other? Walid: Cooking, relationship skills and love.

Asya: I have learned a lot, especially in business and finance. Most importantly, how to manage our financial plan together. I have also learned his wise way of choosing the right battles to fight and his family values and integrity. Some marriages are "passionate," some are "companionate": which fits you? Walid: Primely passionate. Secondary companionate. Asya: We are a little bit of both. Walid loves me and takes good care of me. He Supports me and is proud of me. I have the same for him. What are the keys to a successful relationship? Walid: Honesty, ability to communicate freely, creating good memories together. Asya: Honesty, integrity, trust, acceptance and growing together through mutual experiences. Do you have any common interests or hobbies? Walid: Watching documentaries, painting and cooking together. Asya: Watching documentaries, intellectual gatherings, painting. Tell us about your children. How have they changed your life? Walid: I have four grown children from a previous marriage. My children changed my life when I recognized that they can make their own good decisions. I became a better father and a better person when I became a support to them not a director. Asya: I have Remas from my previous marriage. Yet in this family, Remas treats Walid as her dad and he treats her as his daughter. He gives her emotional support and helps her grow healthy. They enjoy each other’s silly jokes and math homework. Having Remas always makes me want to be a better person for her to look up to. Advice for other couples: Walid: Always be honest. There is nothing worse than covering up a lie. Asya: Be committed to the success of the relationship. Support the other becoming a better person. Share your dreams and fears. Show daily gratitude for the blessing of marriage. How do you feel being selected one of the CP Magazine’s Power Couples? Walid: I’m truly honored. Asya: CP Magazine is doing a remarkable job with this article. We need to spread more of this image of happy couples to inspire others. It means a lot that we are doing this interview as we are launching or business in Kuwait.

Hamad Abdul Rahman Al Saad

Hend Alawadhi

Hamad Abdul Rahman Al Saad describes himself as energetic and disciplined, ideal traits for a man committed to supporting and improving people to their highest potential. A strategic thinker with a creative touch, Hamad is Health Coach at Nature’s Market, a health food store making healthy eating as easy and convenient as possible. Hend Alawadhi’s roles include that of aircraft engineer, blogger, influencer and salon manager, not forgetting her role as a wife. Thankfully, she knows never to take frustration, stress or disappointment from one area of life to another. Please tell us about your academic backgrounds: Hamad: I graduated with a bachelor's degree in General Management. I hold a diploma in food psychology, health coaching and sport nutrition. Hend: An aircraft engineer holding EASA-part 66 both B1 & B2 license. Type rated on Embraer 170 & 190, A320 Family, A330. How and where did the two of you meet? Hamad: Through a mutual friend in Bahrain. Hend: Through my best friend’s sister in Bahrain. As a professional, what are the qualities you admire in your spouse? Hamad: Ambitious, determined, hardworking, confidence, leadership, good at managing a work-life balance alongside being a part time entrepreneur, plus her extraordinary unique sense of style. Hend: Maturity. I admire how understanding he is to my career responsibilities, supporting and encouraging me to continue to do better even if it sometimes gets in the way of our personal goals. Which takes me to his flexibility and openness to new ideas. Not forgetting the most important qualities for the success of any relationship: honesty, respect, determination to always do his best for himself and for us. Where do you concur and where do you differ from each other? Hamad: She’s the responsible, feet-on-the-ground kind of woman while I am a wild spirit, risk-taker kind of man. She is a very logical thinker and uses her mind when it comes to decision making, whereas I am a very follow-your-heart, gut-feeling believer. Hend: We concur our biggest dreams and vision for both wanting the other person to be the best version of themselves. We differ in the way we support each other and evaluate situations. Do you think being friends with your spouse is an important part of marriage? Hamad: Definitely. We don’t believe in traditional marriage titling, we believe in a partnership and support system kind of relationship. We are each other's best friend as well. She’s my ‘ride or die.’ Hend: It’s the most important asset for a successful marriage, to be able to talk to your spouse about everything and anything and to have fun together. How do you handle a work-life balance and challenges in a dynamic work environment? Hamad: Time management and prioritizing is key. Once we segregate and delegate the things we have between each other we cultivate a healthy work-life balance. This has been the case even when it gets hard because we manage to use positive stress to our advantage. Hend: The ability to separate work from other aspects in life is the key for a balanced life. Never take any frustration, stress and disappointment from one area of life to another. When do you spend time with each other? How do you unwind? Hamad: We go to all events/celebrations together. We dedicate special occasions/date nights as well. The most common way for us to unwind is to travel. That’s when we are at the peak of our connection with each other away from any stressors. Hend: I try to get involved as much as I can with what he is doing, to be around giving love and support, but from time to time we stop all the work for some quality time, mostly when travelling, which we do very often. Travelling is my unwind tool along with exercising, reading a good book or spending quality time with an old friend. What is the best gift you received from each other? Hamad: Meeting her completed me. Hend: His continued support. Any memorable holidays? Hamad: Our wedding night was a miracle and one of our first challenges. Also our honeymoon, alongside all our other trips as we live to leave our footprints all over the world as one pair. Hend: The Maldives was an unforgettable trip as it was our first trip together for our mini honeymoon. The United States was definitely something to remember and cherish as it was finally our honeymoon after a two year delay. Spain is a place I would like to go with Hamad over and over again. I can go on and on. I think anywhere, as long as I’m with him, is a memorable holiday, even the places I used to visit often before I met him, such as Thailand, but it was totally different with him. One would imagine that both of you probably discuss business issues a lot at home too. Does that happen?

22

FEBRUARY 2019

Hamad: Yes, all the time. We have different personalities based on each situation. A spouse when she needs me as provider, a best friend when she needs a supporter, a partner when she needs a support system. This allows her to connect easily and openly. Hend: All the time and that’s where most of the problems in our relationship come from, when discussing business issues at the end of the day when you are so exhausted and drained. How are household responsibilities divided? Who is the boss at home? Hamad: I love cooking so I’m always in the kitchen or on the couch after a long day. She makes sure the whole house is spotless and organized and manages the house helpers. Hend: It is equally divided depending on our list of things to do. There is no boss at home, we each take care of our own duties. Mostly Hamad takes care of the kitchen as this is his specialty and hobby. I take care of cleaning and arranging. Has there been any significant event that has changed your marriage? What was the event? How did it change your relationship? Hamad: Once we met, the whole relationship was based on no expectations. Both of us knew and respected the other’s goals and desires and instead of changing each other we embraced our differences and empowered our strength to support and help each other achieve our dreams. I believe this made our relationship much stronger. Once I shifted career I started being more socially active and being able to support her even more. Hend: Not really as I believe we entered this relationship very mature knowing exactly who we are and what we want from life and each other as partners. How do you manage your time together? Do you have any time left over for your marriage at all? Hamad: We highly depend on time management when it comes to how we spend our time. We tend to get very busy, so we need to make sure we spend time on work, our time together, our time individually, and our time with family and friends. Once we spend our time together we make sure we don’t include anything from the other sections. We make sure we divide our life accordingly and have a healthy living balance. Hend: I’ll be very honest, it’s really hard to find time for any kind of relationship when you work full time, blog and manage a salon. So, as much as I can, I get involved in what Hamad has to do and get him involved in what I do, so we at least have some time together and have fun. That’s the most important thing and that’s why we have to put everything on hold from time to time and travel, just so we can have the time together. What are the challenges of being two powerful people at the top of your professional game? Hamad: There are no challenges. We empower each other with lifting and supporting each other. We come from two completely different backgrounds yet we both know the essence of a supporting partner. If one of us has an important event coming up the other makes sure the event has priority, allowing them to take ownership and give it 110%. Hend: Arguments. Nothing would be done if the other person is not convinced or if they find it difficult to fit in their schedule. You have to compromise a lot but also be very smart in knowing when to do so and when not. What have been your most challenging moments in life? Hamad: Convincing her to marry me at first, then persuading her dad to give me his blessing to marry her. Hend: Getting used to sharing everything. We were both very independent and as most new couples find, the financial aspect was a challenge until we got used to the idea of sharing. How do you motivate each other during tough times at work? Hamad: Taking full responsibility and ownership of being the person we need to be for each other, be it a friend, spouse or a partner, and being empathetic while being optimistic and logical but keeping an eye on the emotional factor and considering each other’s feelings at all times. Hend: By reminding each other how we got over a lot of obstacles previously and it’s just another one getting us closer to achieving our goals and dreams. Who’s your inspiration professionally? Hamad: Meeting my wife. She became an important factor in my life and she inspires me to be the best version of myself. Hend: Oprah Winfrey. What have you learnt from each other? Hamad: I learned to slow down a little. To take one task at a time to prefect it. To follow my heart but keep my mind close. Being considerate and caring about myself and who is around me. And

most importantly, patience. Hend: Mostly sharing everything, compromising and loving unconditionally. Some marriages are "passionate," some are "companionate": which fits you? Hamad: We are companions as a couple but share our own passion in life. We work together to support each other to fulfill our purpose in life. Hend: Companionate. What are the keys to a successful relationship? Hamad: Respect and communication are the essence and core value of each successful relationship. Hend: Honesty, respect, being there for your partner, showing affection and appreciation to all they do, dedicate time for each other. Do you have any common interests or hobbies? Hamad: Food - I love cooking it, she loves to eat it. Art - I love to create it, she loves to admire it. Fashion - she enjoys styling it while I love to wear it. Music - I love to play/compose it, she loves listening to it. Sports - I love to exercise, she likes the sports gear. The only thing we perform equally is travelling. Hend: Besides travelling, trying new things and finding ourselves. To be honest, we didn’t at the beginning but at later stages we found things we both loved to do like diving and cycling, things neither of us did earlier. Tell us about your children. How have they changed your life? Both: We don’t have kids yet. Advice for other couples: Hamad: Start first by being an individual, understand yourself and love yourself so that you will be able to identify your strength and weakness to be able to find your better half. Once you do, you will be able to love each other with full compassion as you learned to love yourself first. Hend: Understand yourself, know what you want first before trying to know and understand anyone else. It’s not easy to share a life with someone especially if you are both independent but once you reach that balance it will be the best thing you will ever have. It requires a lot of passion and sacrifice but will be worth it at the end. How do you feel being selected one of the CP magazine’s Power Couples for this year? Hamad: I feel it's a responsibility to motivate others when you have a good thing going. As humans our sole purpose is to serve others and with being chosen, I hope to inspire others to find their soul mates, as they do exist. You only need to be ready to accept to be able to receive. Hend: I was happy to be recognized as it’s one of my messages in social media to be a successful woman in her career and, at the same time, maintain a healthy, happy relationship.

Khaled Almakki

Fatima Alsaffar

Khaled Almakki has an impressive photography portfolio. It was his love of photography that led to the creation of MF Food, a leading brand driven by its mission to produce high quality food retail products. Once a self confessed junk food addict, Khaled thanks his wife for his reformed eating habits and admits he is better because of their healthier lifestyle. Fatima Alsaffar is driven by her desire to make healthy meals, something she practices both personally and professionally. She believes MF Food inspired her to cook better, healthier food and that it’s never too late to learn.

Please tell us about your academic backgrounds: Khaled: I studied accounting but my heart was in photography and video production. My hobby turned into my passion and I learned skills from workshops and programs around the world (Germany, Dubai, Kuwait). Fatima: I am still studying science and technology, majoring in IT. Meanwhile my hobby is to cook, anything and everything! I love trying new things. As a professional, what are the qualities you admire in your spouse? Khaled: I admire being with someone who values creativity and timeliness. Fatima: Skill. Where do you concur and where do you differ from each other? Khaled: We’re alike because we both love food and the craft of cooking. We go to supermarkets together for fun, to discover new ingredients. We also like to eat out together and elevate our palette. However, we do disagree on one thing. She loves healthy vegan power bowls but I love greasier food! Fatima: We both love to work together and we love to eat together. I try to push him to be healthier because I had health issues previously. Do you think being friends with your spouse is an important part of marriage? Khaled: Of course. I believe that friendship comes first and marriage follows. Fatima: We would never agree on anything if we weren’t best friends to begin with. How do you handle a work-life balance and challenges in a dynamic work environment? Khaled: Thankfully, we are both freelance so we can control our time and schedule. All week is like work for us. We have a planned schedule for every move we make. We take two days off a week to always make sure that we’re still having fun. Fatima: We share our weekly schedules with each other and then fit them into one. When do you spend time with each other? How do you unwind? Khaled: We usually break routines by taking short weekend trips to neighboring countries. While we’re in Kuwait, as mentioned previously, we go out to eat. Fatima: We take short trips aboard or spend weekends with family. Sometimes we BBQ at home. Always we spend time together. What is the best gift you received from each other? Khaled: The best gift I received from Fatima was a creative meal. It was stuffed cabbage with all my favourite things. Fatima: His ethics. He made it possible for my business idea to come alive. He’s always pushing me to be more creative. Any memorable holidays? Khaled: Our most memorable holiday was our honeymoon in Germany and Austria. Fatima: Every trip is memorable in its own way, I remember most of them. One would imagine that both of you probably discuss business issues a lot at home too. Does that happen?

24

FEBRUARY 2019

Khaled: Naturally. When we encounter a problem, especially a large project with little time, we often find solutions together. It actually acts as a challenge because we are pressured. Fatima: Since most of our work is made at home, some issues are inevitably brought up. How are household responsibilities divided? Who is the boss at home? Khaled: We both equally participate in all of our household needs. There is no one boss. Fatima: This may seem cliché, but we both need each other equally. No one does more or less. Has there been any significant event that has changed your marriage? What was the event? How did it change your relationship? Khaled: Yes. MF Brand changed our routine. We had an idea and we executed it. There was no company at the time doing this. The feedback was so positive that it pushed both of us to work harder and trust each other even more. Fatima: I think we owe our biggest progression to MF, both for Khaled’s photography and for my cooking. What are the challenges of being two powerful people at the top of your professional game? Khaled: Time and creativity. Sometimes, as humans, we face a creative block or don’t have enough time to innovate. It can be challenging. However, taking those little breaks always help. Fatima: Time. Mostly because we have a son and need to make sure he gets enough care while we’re doing enough work. This kind of stress causes creative blocks and we work hard to get out of that. What have been your most challenging moments in life? Khaled: The hardest thing I ever had to face was learning. Not only were their little opportunities to learn high quality production in Kuwait, anywhere else that offered it was out of my budget. Thankfully, continuously working brought these things closer. Fatima: The most challenging moments of my life were struggling to get an education. I regret not starting much earlier. However, it’s never too late! How do you motivate each other during tough times at work? Khaled: If I’m ever down, I don’t like to burden my wife with work issues. I often keep it in and she eventually realizes and provides emotional support. Otherwise, I like to keep work problems out of our marriage. Fatima: By giving each other our true and full opinions. We’re always showing each other better things, in order to push. Who’s your inspiration professionally? Khaled: My idol is my mother. Her work ethic is like that of a ruler. I will always try to be as magnificent as her. Fatima: Khaled. I easily fall into housewife mode and he constantly pushes me out. What have you learnt from each other? Khaled: So many things. I used to eat junk food and didn’t even know what was going into my body. She taught me how to eat better. She still gives me food education and I am better because of it. Fatima: The most valuable lesson taken from Khaled is organization, professionalism and creative composition.

Some marriages are "passionate," some are "companionate": which fits you? Khaled: I’ll choose companionate. Passion follows. Fatima: Being companionate and passionate come together. Both fit us. What are the keys to a successful relationship? Khaled: Being able to raise children on the same wavelength and learning together what qualities we wish to instill in them. Fatima: Understanding and commitment. Do you have any common interests or hobbies? Khaled: Food, food, food! Fatima: Exercise and making healthy meals. Tell us about your children. How have they changed your life? Khaled: Our son, Ali, has made our relationship stronger. He began to pick ingredients with us and join us in our kitchen festivities. Fatima: Our little Ali is three years old. He teaches me responsibility and unconditional love. Advice for other couples: Khaled: To each his own. Fatima: Find something in common, tie it together and let it grow. How do you feel being selected one of the CP Magazine’s Power Couples for this year? Khaled: I feel humbled and grateful that our craft is appreciated and that people may look up to us. I hope to continue to inspire those who need it. Fatima: It’s a huge thing that we were able to inspire people. It feels wonderful to be of help.

Rohit (Shalesh) Mirchandani

Kareena Mirchandani

When it comes to family values, Rohit (Shalesh) Mirchandani praises his father for the ethics instilled in him from an early age. He also cites his father as his inspiration, encouraging him to work hard in both business and personal environments. Kareena Mirchandani recognizes the importance of doing what is right and not worrying about the things she cannot change. When it comes to maintaining a healthy and happy relationship, she believes in showing respect and allowing one another the space to think freely and to grow.

Please tell us about your academic backgrounds: Rohit: MBA from Abilene Christian University, USA. Kareena: BBA from Symbiosis College, India. How and where did the two of you meet? Rohit: I was working for Petrochemical Industries Company, Kuwait and had taken leave to attend my younger sister’s wedding. Soon after the wedding, my relatives in Mumbai told my parents about a young, beautiful and intellectual girl whose parents were looking for a suitable husband for her. Deep down, I myself wanted to settle down and so agreed to meet the girl and her family at Juhu Ville Parle Club, Mumbai. To be honest, it was love at first sight. We clicked instantly, spoke about our histories, families and the future. We met and got married in a span of 15 days. It’s said that marriages are made in heaven. Well, we were destined to be soul mates. Kareena: The first meeting was unexpected. I was only 19 and still not sure about marriage. However, when I met Rohit, I was charmed. His attitude, respect for adults and humbleness were all evident. Deep down, I knew I could not say no to this man. As a professional, what are the qualities you admire in your spouse? Rohit: She is very humble, organized and critical in her thinking. She always helps me look at things from a different perspective and I really appreciate that about her. Kareena: He has always been a true entrepreneur. He knows when to take risks, how to take them and does a great job in completing the goals he has set for himself. He is very creative and constantly looks for new business ideas to pursue. For example, whenever we are on family holidays, he will constantly look for new business opportunities. He is a doer and I love that about him. Where do you concur and where do you differ from each other? Rohit/Kareena: We concur that we should value life and enjoy it. Every day is a new beginning and has to be lived to the fullest. It’s difficult to single out any differences. Like all couples there are always differing points of view. We do have them, but we respect each other’s view points. Having a maturity to resolve and move on is the foundation of our love and marriage. These are the vow’s we took during our marriage. This is the secret of our togetherness. Do you think being friends with your spouse is an important part of marriage? Kareena: Gone are the days when an Indian bride follows her husband. Today’s educated men respect their women and want them to be equals. Friendship is the only relationship we value as equals and with ease. We have a carefree relationship. We can joke with each other and talk openly. We have differences but still remain the best of friends. Rohit: I completely agree. How do you handle a work-life balance and challenges in a dynamic work environment? Rohit: Born into a business family and seeing my parents bring up four children, I have always witnessed how my father ensured a work-life balance. I have learned that it is important to split your day in such a way that you give time to all aspects of life i.e. work, spouse, children and social causes. It has all been possible because of my supporting wife, wonderful sons and a professional team in my company. I feel it is very important to have a supporting family that understands the work you do and so can help out in any way. Also, a supporting team that appreciates the love and support the company provides, reciprocating by caring for the company even more during our travel/absence. Kareena: Rohit is more focused on business growth and I support the marketing and creative teams. We have clearly outlined our objectives between our roles. For example, I only go to the office for a few hours a day as I ensure our children do not get neglected. When do you spend time with each other? How do you unwind?

26

FEBRUARY 2019

Rohit: In the evenings, of course. We chat about the day, the family, watch a movie or just listen to music and chill out. Kareena: We have different groups of friends and make a point to meet up over the weekend and enjoy time together. We also ensure we take regular vacations and travel at least once every couple of months. What is the best gift you received from each other? Rohit: Kareena hosted my 50th birthday in Dubai. I couldn’t have asked for more. Kareena: Of course, a big diamond ring! Any memorable holidays? Rohit/Kareena: Goa. We love going to Goa whenever possible. We enjoy the relaxed atmosphere there.

What have you learnt from each other? Rohit: I have learnt how to be more cautious in my dealings. Women are blessed with a sixth sense. Kareena: Simplicity and to be courageous in front of adversity. Some marriages are "passionate," some are "companionate": which fits you? Rohit: Definitely passionate. We do the same at work and home. Kareena: I second that. Rohit and I always give our best whether at work or home. What are the keys to a successful relationship? Rohit: Love, compassion and honesty. Kareena: Respect for each other and giving each other the space to grow and think freely.

One would imagine that both of you probably discuss business issues a lot at home too. Does that happen?

Do you have any common interests or hobbies?

Both: We respect each other’s space and ensure we keep work at work and not at home. Limited discussions always happen, we cannot deny that, however, we know when to switch off from work mode.

Rohit: Travelling Kareena: Music

How are household responsibilities divided? Who is the boss at home?

Kareena: We have two boys, aged 23 and 18. The best thing we did is have them early. Being young parents makes life more beautiful as it allows us to be friends with them.

Rohit: Kareena is the boss at home. She looks after everything. She makes delicious food, takes care of the dogs and, with help, ensures the house is tidy at all times. When it comes to the kids, she definitely has more say than me.

Tell us about your children. How have they changed your life?

Rohit: Having kids is always a blessing, they both have been very lucky for us. Advice for other couples:

Has there been any significant event that has changed your marriage? What was the event? How did it change your relationship?

Rohit: A woman should not step on a man’s ego and a man should not step on a woman’s emotions.

Rohit/Kareena: Definitely the birth of our son, Jay. Kareena was only 20, I was 27 and as we were parents for the first time, we felt this sudden hit of responsibility. It made us closer as we both knew we had a shared responsibility of giving our son a great childhood.

Kareena: Enjoy every moment of togetherness, there is no tomorrow.

How do you manage your time together? Do you have any time left over for your marriage at all? Kareena: We are celebrating 25 years of marriage this year. We have both accepted each of our weaknesses and try our best to get the best from each other. We travel often and so get some time away from work which really helps us get closer. What are the challenges of being two powerful people at the top of your professional game? Rohit: Seriously, no challenges at all. We have our assigned responsibilities and ensure we complete them on time. What have been your most challenging moments in life? Rohit: When I started the safety business on my own 22 years ago with limited funding, I had only my ideas to back me up with a supporting wife and a new born son. Those initial days of struggle when I was on my own were the most challenging in life. Kareena: Yes, I remember this time. Rohit was courageous and never let these challenges come between of us. How do you motivate each other during tough times at work? Kareena: We remind each other of our goals in life and stick with doing what’s right by not worrying about the things we cannot change. Rohit: Yes we do and we work hard at it. Who’s your inspiration professionally? Rohit: My father first, as without him I wouldn’t be here. He was humble and kind with a strong personality. I can never forget the values and business tips he shared with me. Kareena: My parents. They made the perfect team.

How do you feel being selected one of the CP Magazine’s Power Couples for this year? Rohit: We are honored to have been selected and congratulate the other power couples too. Kareena: For me power comes from being humble, tolerant, compassionate and loving and if those values recognize us to be a Power Couple, we thank CP for the appreciation.

LIVING THE ITALIAN DREAM

Where: Villa di Piazzano, Tuscany Under the Tuscan Sun, a film shot in 2003, put Italy as the center of its plot, with mythical and beautiful places like Cortana, Rome and Positano. The film is inspired by the homonym book of the writer Frances Mayes, and involves us in a story that goes from San Francisco to Italy. The small village of Cortona featured in the film is one that makes an amazing holiday destination. Located in the province of Arezzo in Tuscany, it is famous as a centre for goldsmithing, artistic endeavours and museums, and it makes a lovely base for a short holiday or a long-term stay. The Hotel Villa di Piazzano, a manor house of the 1400s located just outside of Cortona, member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, is the perfect location to live the Italian dream. From the moment you’re greeted at the door, Villa di Piazzano begins to work its magic. Time seems to move more slowly. Wander from your peaceful, heritageinspired room to the sun-soaked pool. Or grab a bike and head out to tackle some of those Tuscan hills. When you’ve worked up an appetite, sit down to an ultra-local Italian feast at the restaurant, where the vegetables are plucked fresh from the hotel gardens. Set on the border between Tuscany and Umbria, Villa di Piazzano puts you in pride of place for discovering the region’s highlights. Explore captivating medieval cities like Siena or hop over the border to pretty Perugia. Cortona, with its Renaissance piazzas and ancient Etruscan heritage, is just 10 minutes away by car. https://www.slh.com/hotels/villa-di-piazzano/

GAME OF THRONE´S BEST KEPT SECRET: EXTREMADURA Where: Cáceres, Spain

Photo Credit: Macall B. Polay - HBO

You have not seen the best of Spain until you have visited Extremadura. Nestled in the southwest region of Spain, this rich destination can be considered an authentic film set. The excellent state of preservation of the Historic Heritage, combined with the conditions of the natural environment attracts the attention of movie producers worldwide. Cáceres proved to have a very Game of Thrones feel, with its odd-shaped rocks, classical buildings and wonderful plains. Most Spanish cities have an Old Town, but Cáceres’ Ciudad monumental is on a different level: nearly every church, tower and palace predates the 16th century, making the walled city one of Europe’s most impressive enclaves of medieval architecture. The medieval city of Cáceres was especially used for the scenes of King’s Landing in Season 7 of Game of Thrones. As all the fans of the show know, the King´s Landing is the place where most of the show unfolds. Not far from Cáceres is Los Barruecos National Park. The shallow lakes, grassy terrain and smoothed rock outcrops feel and look magical - perfect for a little escapism into the world of Westeros. The Castle of Trujillo was the perfect location for the scenes of Casterly Rock, the ancestral home of the Lannisters since it is located at the highest point. Also in Season 7, a gruesome battle between the Unsullied and the Lannister armies plays out at this iconic castle. http://extremadurafc.org

THE BEAUTY OF MARS ON EARTH Where: Wadi Rum, Jordan

Ridley Scott’s blockbuster The Martian was filmed almost entirely in Jordan depicting the great landscape of Wadi Rum as the surface of Mars. The movie is about an astronaut who winds up stranded on the planet´s surface and must figure out a way to survive solo. This isn´t the first time Wadi Rum has played Mars on film. Scenes from Mission to Mars, The Last Days of Mars and the masterpiece, Lawrence of Arabia, were also shot here. Also called the Valley of the Moon, the 278-square-mile protected area looks about as Martian as you’re likely to find on Earth. The Martian provided the inspiration for a wonderful brand new travel trend, the futuristic domes that are today eerily planted in the Jordan desert. The sandstone and granite rock formations amidst the desert allow tourists to feel as if they’ve travelled to the red planet. Usually, each dome includes a private bathroom and glass walls that provide visitors with panoramic views of the desert and surrounding mountains. Guests at the camp can take part in activities including Arabian horseback and camel riding, buggy and jeep adventures, hot air ballooning and rock climbing. So instead of going to Mars, you can see it there in Wadi Rum. Book your trip!

A GLIMPSE OF THE REAL-LIFE LION KING Where: Kenya

Celebrating the launch of the hotly anticipated Disney remake of the Lion King in July 2019, The Safari Collection is launching a privately guided safari to the Kenyan locations which inspired the original film. The safari will be privately guided by Robert Carr-Hartley, the original guide to the Disney animators for the creation of the Lion King in 1994. Robert was the animator’s guide during their research safari and provided inspiration prior to the film being made. He was also instrumental in changing the screenplay to include Pumba, choosing a warthog as Simba’s sidekick, and helped with songs and Kenyan sayings which played a part in the creation of 'Hakuna Matata'. This once-in-a-lifetime experience begins with one night at Giraffe Manor, renowned for its herd of resident Rothschild’s giraffe who join guests for breakfast and tea. Next up, guests will head off on a flight to Laikipa, well known for its nature reserve and national parks. This is the area that inspired the Pride Lands in the film, as well as Pride Rock. Guests will stay at Borana Lodge, where they will get to enjoy drinks as they look out over the rock itself and across the beautiful landscape where characters from the film such as the hyenas lived. The next stop on the trip is to Samburu, where guests will spend two nights in a lion conservation area. They can also go buffalo spotting at Buffalo Springs and will spend the night star-gazing – like Simba did in the film. After this, there’s a flight to Masai Mara, which is known as lion territory, and gives a final chance to watch lions in their natural habitat before the trip home. www.thesafaricollection.com

DELECTABLE DINING AT SAKURA: Sumptuous Saturday Brunch in Kuwait at Crowne Plaza Al Thuraya City

I had heard great reviews of the Saturday Brunch at Sakura restaurant, located in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, but had never had the chance to visit. However, I recently discovered that they have re-launched it with an enhanced menu and I didn't want to miss out again! So, last Saturday I reserved a table and went for the buffet brunch. Brief Background on Sakura: A Top Place for Japanese Dining

Sakura has a solid reputation for being one of the best Japanese restaurants in Kuwait. Open for more than 20 years, the highly skilled chefs use fresh ingredients and artful presentation to appeal to diverse senses. Dishes are prepared according to ageold Japanese culinary traditions with added modern flair for even more appeal.

Relaxed Ambience and Attractive Appearance

Part of any great dining experience is the setting, and Sakura doesn’t disappoint. The restaurant has an understated elegance and stylish simplicity. The cushioned seats are soft and there’s plenty of space between tables to not worry about banging into people each time you get up to replenish your plate. With long tables of food at both sides, you don’t need to worry about a rush of diners at one time causing congestion. The atmosphere is unhurried and relaxed and you can take your time over brunch and enjoy good conversation with your companion(s).

Feast Till You’re Full

Sakura’s Saturday Brunch provides the opportunity to feast on as much as you can, with plenty of tempting dishes to sample. Make sure you come hungry as, if you’re anything like me, you’re sure to want to try everything … and then go back for more!

40

FEBRUARY 2019

Everything is labeled so you know exactly what you’re tucking into. Salivate over sushi and sashimi and savour various mouth-watering salads. Daikon, crab, seafood, and red cabbage with ramen and chicken are just a few of the flavourful salads you can pile up on your plate. Soups, grilled fish, and meaty skewers provide even more tasty diversity.

Watch Masters at Work

One thing that I especially loved at Sakura’s Saturday Brunch was the live cooking station. Guests can watch in awe and fascination as chefs prepare dishes in front of their eyes. Seeing how the raw ingredients are transformed into artfully presented dishes really is fantastic. Enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells of cooking before sinking your teeth into the finished dish really gives you a whole new level of appreciation for the gastronomic delights. While the chefs certainly take pride in their creations and produce all items to an exemplary standard they do have a playful side too. Don’t be surprised if a chef puts on a little juggling performance while cooking, masterfully throwing implements and ingredients into the air to combine food preparation and entertainment.

Save Plenty of Space for Dessert

Although you’ll certainly be tempted to fill up on lots of delicious food, don’t forget to leave some space for dessert. Individual sweets fill a whole table, with delights like strawberry jelly, glutinous rice cake, matcha roll, and palitaw (a small, sweet rice cake) to satisfy any sweet tooth and sugar craving. Sakura is a fantastic place for a laid-back brunch, and I’m sure it would appeal equally to couples, families, and groups of friends. Why not treat yourself this Saturday to a delectable brunch at Sakura? Who knows, I may even see you there!

I’m Keen –Tell Me More!

Sakura’s Saturday Brunch buffet is open between 12 noon and 4pm. You should reserve your table in advance to avoid disappointment. For more information and to make a reservation, call the restaurant on +965 96961300.

FAHAD AL-JEDEI HITS THE PEDAL TO THE GOLD MEDAL, FOR THE FIRST TIME. Ultimately, Fahad Al Jadei, edged past the competition and clinched the title with a jaw-dropping performance collecting an impressive 270 points. He was beaming with pride as he held the trophy. Al Jadei will go on to represent Kuwait at the Series Final in September. Al Jadei will face a fierce challenge for the King of Drift title, competing against drifters from eleven other countries that have participated in the series. The 2019 series kicked off in Kuwait on February 1 and the competition will continue with qualifiers in Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Algeria, Mauritius, Tunisia, Morocco, Turkey, Georgia and Jordan. With only one drifter from each participating country, Turkey will welcome the 2019 Kuwait King of Drift at the Series Final this September 1 where he will compete to claim the Series Final throne.

In front of 2,500 spectators, Fahad Al Jedei managed to secure the 2019 Kuwait King of Drift title in an outstanding manner. Second place went to Abdulhadi Hjailan, followed by Saad Al Foudari who rounded the podium. In celebration of eleven years since the first ever Red Bull Car Park Drift event in Lebanon, drifters competed to clinch the crown. Having hosted a successful adrenaline-filled Series Final in 2017, Kuwait was, no doubt, in the position to impress thousands of drifting and motorsport fans alike. Red Bull Car Park Drift was organized by Basel Salem AlSabah Motor Racing Club and sponsored by Falken Tyres, Motul, Al Sayer Engineering, Platinum Gym, KTM and Acqua Eva. The day started with motorsport spectators lining up to witness the high adrenaline spectacle and throne-thirsty drifters going head-to-head for the coveted title. The drifters then began the first heat consisting of 14 drifters on a challenging track concocted by Abdo Feghali, previous Guinness World Book Record holder for the longest drift. In an expected turn of events, Ali Makhseed was unable to qualify to the 2nd round due to an unfortunate technical failure. The top eight to break through to round 2 were Fahad Al Jedei, Abdulhadi Hjailan, Saad Al Foudari, Mohammed Abdulrazzaq, Saad Al Mutayri, Dari Al Shammari, Mohammed Al Sabah and Ali Mussawi. This time, only four would make it to the next round. Spectators and drifters anxiously awaited the final round and action to resume, to ultimately crown the winner. The final four from round 2, Fahad Al Jedei, Abdulhadi Hjailan, Saad Al Foudari and Mohammed Abdulrazzaq all went head-to-head with one aim - to be crowned the 2019 Kuwait King of Drift. Consisting of top motorsport and drifting experts and athletes, the judging panel was assigned the task of evaluating the competitors. This year’s judging panel table was rounded up by Fouad Abu Arja, experienced motorsports organizer, Mishari Al Sabti, International Relations manager at BMRC, and Issam Al Najadi, rally veteran. This year the drifters’ performance was determined based on car look and design (40 points), drifting skills (120 points), boxes (50 points), spiral (20 points), gate (20 points), flipper (60 points), pendulum (50 points), car sound (20 points) and tire smoke (20 points).

44

FEBRUARY 2019

The competition, first hosted by Red Bull in Lebanon, provides drifting amateurs and professionals with the opportunity to highlight their skills and compete for the crown, while capturing the crowd’s attention. Last year’s Kuwait qualifier witnessed an exciting turnout with Ali Makhseed claiming Kuwait’s King of Drift title and continuing to the Series Final in Lebanon. Lebanese competitor, Oliver El Kik, secured the 2019 King of Drift crown after a stellar performance at the Series Final, hosted in Lebanon. On a global level, the story of drifting goes back to the 1960s on winding Japanese mountain roads. A bunch of likeminded racers set out to beat their A to B times by exceeding the grip limit of their tires when taking sharp corners. It did not do much to help their racing times but instead evolved into an entirely different discipline. Drifting was born, and a Red Bull manager discovered the sport in 2005 and decided to spark a fire in the Middle East, a fire that still burns to this very day.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE YOUR

SUCCESS? Iman Metwally

For some people, success is measured by how much money they have. Others measure it by how happy they are. Some people compete with themselves and measure success by self-satisfaction in knowing they have made the effort to do the best they are capable of, while others measure it by the difference they make in peoples’ lives. For me, success is the continued expansion of happiness and the progressive realization of worthy goals. I measure my success by the amount of people I have progressed and the number of steps I have taken towards my goals. A lot of articles speak about tools to success, including selfdiscipline, focus, energy, people skills, faith in ourselves, etc. All of these tools are great and might indeed lead to success. However, my favourites are always the odd ones. The ones that tell me not to follow what everyone else is doing and to think differently. The ones that tell me to focus on people in order to advance myself.

it. Some people see the things they want and others see the things that prevent them from getting what they want. It really depends on us and how we see it. You don’t have to wait in line and you don’t have to do it the way everyone else has done it. You can do it your own way. You can break the rules and do whatever it takes as long as you are not getting in the way of somebody else getting what they want and as long as you are not denying anyone else their right to go after what they want. • Turn pressure into excitement. The body experiences specific feelings when we are under pressure such as increased heart rate, sweat, etc. These feelings might lead us to pull back from a task or a mission which might affect success. When we are excited, the body experiences the same feelings as those felt when under pressure, but the difference is we will strive to push forward rather than pull back. This will lead to a positive change towards success. It’s worth a try next time you are facing a pressure to tell your mind that what your body is experiencing is actually excitement. It’s all about how you frame it in your mind.

I recently watched the amazing Simon Sinek and as always, he encouraged me with his thoughts and ideas that speak of and reflect our real life. Maybe that’s why he is very close to most peoples’ hearts. Some of his favourite tips towards success have made me stop and write this article so I can share it with as many people in the Middle East as possible. His success is not measured by how much money he makes or how smart and tough he can be. His success is measured by how far his steps took him towards his big goal in life. Two of the many tips Simon spoke about had an impact on the way I see success and the way I would like to reach to it. Simon says: • Go after the things you want and keep your eyes on

BOUNDLESS BREXIT

N

o matter where you live in the world, you can’t avoid the subject of Brexit. It is dominating world headlines and looks set to do so for some time yet. It’s hard to believe that some people may not know what Brexit actually is, but for the avoidance of doubt, I’ll explain.

After months of negotiations covering everything from farming to fishing and from immigration to transportation, the Prime Minister’s proposed withdrawal agreement was rejected by Parliament on 15th January 2019. A subsequent ‘no confidence’ vote by the Opposition Leader, Jeremy Corben, was defeated. So Mrs. May’s unenviable task continues.

Great Britain has been a member of the European Union since 1973. On 23rd June 2016, the British people voted in favour of leaving the EU by a majority of 51.9%. The British Government was given until 29th March 2019 to negotiate the conditions of their exit. In other words, to agree the terms of their separation and divorce from the common market.

Bored yet? Join the club. Unless you’re directly involved with or have a particular interest in politics, the subject of Brexit isn’t exactly stimulating. In fact, it’s downright tedious. Which is why, it is widely believed that if the 51.9% of Brits were asked to vote again, they would tick a very different box. Had they realised the implications of their vote in terms of both time and cost, the outcome of the original referendum would probably have been very different.

The British Prime Minister, Theresa May, inherited this task from her predecessor, David Cameron, who resigned immediately after the referendum in which the British public opted to turn their back on the EU and reject his plea to remain. Theresa May took over as the Conservative Party Leader on 13th July 2016 and in doing so took on, arguably, the most difficult job in modern politics. The main bone of contention, it would seem, is the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. At present, few restrictions apply to the trading of goods and services between the two jurisdictions. However, after Brexit, different customs and regulatory regimes could apply, resulting in compulsory border checks. For those who may not realise, Great Britain and Northern Ireland are united in Brexit but the Republic of Ireland remains a member of the EU.

Undeniably, the decision to leave the EU has seriously damaged the UK economy. Brexit is allegedly costing the UK £500million per week. So while politicians are arguing over a hard or a soft border, the people they represent are worrying about the longevity of their jobs, the cost of inflation and the future for a post-Brexit Britain. One could argue that they only have themselves to blame. It was, after all, the British public who voted to leave the EU in the first place. But did they really know (and understand) the significance of their vote? I think not. There is one thing that unites Great Britain with the rest of Europe and, indeed, the rest of the world. That is the desire to bring the Brexit negotiations to a swift and amicable conclusion. The day when the ‘B’ word is absent from world headlines will be a day worth celebrating, for sure. www.cpmagazine.net

Yes, it’s a cliché! But it’s time for us to pay more attention to details because those details can make or break and sometimes fake our chances to get ahead successfully in life. Or, at the end of the day, we might just find ourselves surviving on the niche outlines forever - and that would be a crying shame! Did you ever wonder why some people are super successful and have made it to the top, enjoying all the respect and money to go with it? And, at the same time, did you ask yourself, why not me? After all, you might share the same age and God given looks, plus the same college degrees. Of course you did! Other times, you may feel so down and so frustrated that you believe you could be the unluckiest person that walked this wide green earth. But have you ever asked yourself, what is their secret? What is the secret that many people follow to get to the top (and stay there)? We all know it's never just about the college degree you obtained or the number of years you spent behind the desk gaining that experience and know-how. The reason is much simpler. It just takes a choice. It’s the choice we make with our attire that can change the way people view us. The secret is a suitable but affordable choice of wardrobe that demands and commands respect. However, not so many people know the rules of the attire game and how to play it right to the doors of success. The rules may differ according to gender but the goals are always the same - to get ahead, to be heard and to be taken seriously. The rules require a whole set of courage and a budget set aside

58

FEBRUARY 2019

to achieve it. But don’t worry, it will not cost you a hand or a foot or even your whole salary. It’s a game of choosing and following a set of rules, three to be exact.

Rule number one - choose solid colours. No matter if you have dark, light or olive skin (or even green skin and come from Mars!) solid colours complement any skin and hair complexion with any choice of clothing, especially office attire. Rule number two - too much colour in your attire decreases the value of a garment, especially if you want people to focus more on your words than on the rainbow colours distracting them. Remember, multi-colour attires have a time and a place and it’s rarely at the office, no matter the season! Rule number three – cleanliness is truly next to godliness. Be

tidy with your attire choices. Be clean cut with the garments you shop for and try to be minimal while maintaining that confidence and appeal. And please, please, always keep your nails manicured, your body and breath fresh and your toes covered with simple and classical pumps or shoes. Because as we all know, footwear speaks volumes on personality. So remember, choose fashionable garments that will aid your attire game and allow you to reach the stars – which is right where you belong and surely deserve. Happy job hunting! Stay safe and fashionable.

HERE AND NOW AND THEN

by Claire Adam

Rural Trinidad: a brick house on stilts surrounded by bush; a family, quietly surviving, just trying to live a decent life. Clyde, the father, works long, exhausting shifts at the petroleum plant in southern Trinidad; Joy, his wife, looks after the home. Their two sons, thirteen years old, wake early every morning to travel to the capital, Port of Spain, for school. They are twins but nothing alike: Paul has always been considered odd, while Peter is widely believed to be a genius, destined for greatness.

THIS IS MARKETING: YOU CAN'T BE SEEN UNTIL YOU LEARN TO SEE by Seth Godin Now, for the first time, Godin offers the core of his marketing wisdom in one accessible, timeless package. At the heart of his approach is a big idea: Great marketers don't use consumers to solve their company's problem; they use marketing to solve other people's problems. They don't just make noise; they make the world better. Truly powerful marketing is grounded in empathy, generosity, and emotional labour.

Kin Stewart is an everyday family man: working in IT, trying to keep the spark in his marriage, struggling to connect with his teenage daughter, Miranda. But his current life is a far cry from his previous career…as a time-traveling secret agent from 2142. Stranded in suburban San Francisco since the 1990s after a botch.

YES, I'M HOT IN THIS: THE HILARIOUS TRUTH ABOUT LIFE IN A HIJAB by Huda Fahmy

In Yes, I’m Hot in This, Huda navigates the sometimes-rocky waters of life from the unique perspective of a Muslim-American woman, breaking down misconceptions of her culture one comic at a time. From recounting the many questions she gets about her hijab every day (yes, she does have hair) and explaining how she runs in an abaya (just fine, thank you) to dealing with misconceptions about Muslims, Yes, I’m Hot in This tackles universal feelings from an point of view we don’t hear from nearly enough.

Twenty-five chances to impress. When the test takes an unexpected and tragic turn, Idir is handed the power of life and death. How do you value a life when all you have is multiple choice?

TWO MINUS ONE: A MEMOIR

International bestselling author Guy Gavriel Kay's latest work is set in a world evoking early Renaissance Italy and offers an extraordinary cast of characters whose lives come together through destiny, love, and ambition. In a chamber overlooking the nighttime waterways of a maritime city, a man looks back on his youth and the people who shaped his life. Danio Cerra's intelligence won him entry to a renowned school even though he was only the son of a tailor. He took service at the court of a ruling count--and soon learned why that man was known as the Beast.

THE ACCIDENTAL BEAUTY QUEEN

“You can quit waiting for the other shoe to drop: I’m in it for life.” Those are the fateful, repeated words that help convince Kathryn Taylor to remarry, retire from her thirty-year profession, sell her home, and relocate in support of her new husband’s career. But five years later, in a car packed with food she has carefully prepared to nourish her husband’s dying brother, the other shoe does drop. Taylor’s husband unexpectedly proclaims he is, “done with the marriage and doesn’t want to talk about it.”

Charlotte Gorman loves her job as an elementary school librarian, and is content to experience life through the pages of her books. Which couldn’t be more opposite from her identical twin sister. A New Memoir Offers the Real Dirt About Not Getting By MAID: HARD WORK, LOW PAY, AND A MOTHER'S WILL TO SURVIVE by Stephanie Land, Barbara Ehrenreich (Foreword)

Evicted meets Nickel and Dimed in Stephanie Land's memoir about working as a maid, a beautiful and gritty exploration of poverty in America. Includes a foreword by Barbara Ehrenreich. "My daughter learned to walk in a homeless shelter." While the gap between upper middle-class Americans and the working poor widens, grueling low-wage domestic and service work--primarily done by women--fuels the economic success of the wealthy. Stephanie Land worked for years as a maid, pulling long hours while struggling as a single mom to keep a roof over her daughter's head. In Maid, she reveals the dark truth of what it takes to survive and thrive in today's inequitable society. While she worked hard to scratch her way out of poverty as a single parent, scrubbing the toilets of the wealthy, navigating domestic labor jobs, higher education, assisted housing, and a tangled web of government assistance, Stephanie wrote. She wrote the true stories that weren't being told. The stories of overworked and underpaid Americans.

Few books have as powerful a first sentence as Maid, Stephanie Land’s memoir about living in poverty, working as a house cleaner and struggling to survive on $9 an hour. “My daughter learned to walk in a homeless shelter,” her story begins. Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive describes the years that Land worked as a single mother, finding jobs in the gig economy and stretching food stamps and minimum wage to pay rent, buy food, secure childcare, and navigate a complicated and onerous system of government assistance. Land chronicles a life of cleaning and caseworkers with moments of normalcy that challenge stereotypes of homelessness and those living in poverty. She works constantly. Her mother, father, grandfather, brother, and former boyfriend celebrate her daughter Mia’s first birthday party in the homeless shelter. The two become transitional homeless after Land’s abusive relationship fails and family members don't have enough income themselves to account for one—or two—more.

WRITING MOVIE

WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan | Written by M. Night Shyamalan Unbreakable (2000) was a film that blended the thriller and superhero genres masterfully. Since that film M. Night Shyamalan has had hits, but mostly misses, at the box office. Then in 2016, he surprised many with his film Split. The ending of that film bridged Unbreakable to the events that unfold in Glass. Bruce Willis reprises his role as David Dunn, a man with superhuman strength and toughness. Samuel L Jackson is back as the evil mastermind, Mr. Glass. James McAvoy gets to display great acting range with much more personalities than he got to do in the previous film, Split, as the Horde. Other characters from the two previous films are on board to include Spencer Treat Clark, Anya Taylor-Joy and Charlayne Woodard. With one sole writer and a limited budget it’s easy to come up short.

Here come the spoilers. The film starts with an eerie reminder of who the Horde is. James McAvoy does a superb job displaying the mannerisms and distinct character traits of the various personalities. A quick jump and we are thrust into what David Dunn has been up to all these years since the events in Unbreakable. He and his now grown son are working together to fight crime and are tracking the Horde. Dunn eventually crosses paths with the Horde and ends up freeing the captive girls but, in his fight with the Beast, ends up getting captured by police and sent to a mental institution. The same institution that Mr. Glass is being held at. Next, the film goes very slow to prove the idea that superheroes can be explained and that it’s a mental delusion that is making them believe they are superheroes and villains. Dr. Staple, played as monotonous as it can get by Sarah Paulson, runs a series of tests and sessions with the three in an attempt to convince them they are delusional. Of course it doesn’t work and it isn’t long before all three escape. Before I go further let me address some serious issues with the film at this point. One: the security at this place is ridiculous. The staff cannot see what’s going on in the room before using a magnetic key card to open a door.

60

FEBRUARY 2019

Two: Toilets? Three: Why would you put pictures in Mr. Glass’s room with glass in the frames? Okay, moving on. Mr. Glass seemingly has a plan to escape. He let all three of them collide at the Osaka Tower in the city to show the whole world that superheroes and villains exist. Yet they end up in a showdown in front of the institution building. I feel a 20 million dollar budget is at fault for this. Split had a budget of 9 million and went on to make 278 million dollars at the box office. So why not bump up the budget for Glass? Shame. Just 10 million more could have resulted in a far superior film. Here is what I would have done to improve this film. What should have occurred is that all three make it to the Osaka Tower and have their climatic fight. Fire sprinklers get activated which weaken Dunn and he is almost beaten by the Beast. Dunn’s son rushes in to reveal to the Beast that Mr. Glass killed his father when the train derailed years ago. The Beast goes to Glass and injures him, but before he can kill him the girl intervenes and brings out Kevin’s personality. Dr. Staple shows up and brushes by Dunn who can see she is working for a secret society. She then starts to disclose that their plans to reveal heroes and villains to the world is going to fail because she (and the secret society she works for) has already flooded the news that this attack is an act of terrorism and nobody will ever know they existed. Glass starts to laugh loudly and reveals he is wearing a body-cam, streaming pictures from the hospital to everyone on the internet. Dr. Staple tells him nobody will believe this but Glass looks at her and says, ‘You think this is fake news? No. This is our reality and now everyone will believe superheroes and supervillains exist. This was never a limited edition. This is an original story.’ He then pushes a button and the building explodes. News footage details the aftermath. New stories of more people with superhuman abilities start to come in. Thanks for reading ‘Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’.

A VIOLENT MAN

THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART

A bourbon salesman (Walsh) fighting off 50, unexpectedly proposes and is rejected by his best friend’s 24-year-old daughter under the Eiffel Tower. The soul crushing event sparks a wine-fueled ‘coming of middle age’ jaunt across the French countryside, a surprising friendship with a local footballer (Eggold) and sparks romantic possibilities with a beautiful and independent French woman (Godrèche).

An unknown MMA fighter, Ty Matthews, beats the undefeated champion at a local gym. Overnight, Ty becomes the underdog champion of the world - with a title fight on the horizon. But when the female reporter covering the story is found dead, Ty becomes the murder suspect; as he was last seen with her leaving a bar late at night. His only alibi is his girlfriend who is aware of him arriving home late that night. A blackout, a dead body, and incriminating circumstances puts Ty in the middle of a mystery. Like Bogart in “In a Lonely Place” he finds himself under the microscope of a murder, which he doesn’t know if he committed.

The battle to defeat the invaders and restore harmony to the LEGO universe will take Emmet, Lucy, Batman and their friends to faraway, unexplored worlds, including a strange galaxy where everything is a musical. It will test their courage, creativity and Master Building skills, and reveal just how special they really are.

Tissot Heritage Visodate Quartz A legacy of elegance

This is the watch that every young man dreams of wearing on his wrist: a piece that is passed on from generation to generation. Inspired by the 1950s collection, the Tissot Heritage Visodate Quartz symbolises a smooth combination of sentimental classicism and youthful passion which is expressed in its design: a nostalgic dial with a modern twist, the Tissot logo in the original font, delicate facetted hour markers, the essential date counter at 3 o’clock and – a new feature – a quartz movement. The 1950s heralded the Tissot Heritage Visodate with its avant-garde design: a streamlined dial; crisp, angular lines; finesse in wear; an original style; and the essential date function at 3 o’clock. The Tissot Heritage Visodate Quartz takes inspiration from its predecessor while adding elegant touches from its own time, including a domed case made statelier by a range of distinctive straps. The young man who wears it embodies the values, hopes and aspirations of the 21st century, while showing affection for a piece that makes reference to history. This piece could have belonged to his grandfather, and it possesses a unique patina; but it is also the ideal daily companion. From urban life to the office, from the airport terminal to weekends on the road, the Tissot Heritage Visodate Quartz embodies all the qualities required for the pursuit of purity to which we all aspire. It has that surprising spirit – a blend of retro and modernity – that makes ordinary life extraordinary: a way of reminding us that in life, yes, there is always a new experience somewhere to be discovered. And a new chapter to write.

DIANA MAHRACH COUTURE FROM NEW YORK CITY THE GLORY OF DUBAI’S RUNWAY

R

eady couture travels to the fashion capital of Arab culture under the exclusive name of Diana Mahrach Couture, showcasing during Arab Fashion Week in Dubai. Dresses were the most wanted pieces, traveling directly from New York City, where they were designed and made in the private studio of designer Diana. The eye-catching elegance of the Nicole Gown was as light and dusty as the morning desert and as sensual as the feelings of an Arabian princess. It was this dress that caught the eyes of most Dubai fashionistas during the fashion show. The waving pink feathers on the catwalk matched the evening mood of glamorous guests in the full house. Top models of the Middle East combined with Diana Mahrach Couture and displayed another great sample, the Alicia Gown. Its yellow and navy colour combination was a hit on dark skin with light shining from sequins, bringing fresh feelings to the minds of guests for the rest of the night. To represent romance, Diana presented the Bridal collection. White dresses were modelled alongside a male pure white suit, breaking down any conservative thoughts by the guests on the night. Diana Mahrach is a Moroccan designer based in New York. She considers Middle Eastern fashion as an honoured landmark when presenting her established brand. The extravagant ideas for her creations are inspired by her Arab roots. My personal choice from Diana Mahrach Couture has to be the golden gown named Elizabeth, looking glorious during Arab Fashion Week. It rocked the night with sparkling crystals, like magical stardust across the Dubai runway.

AbirAchkarSocial

Stylist Forecasts

Top Trends for SS 2019 Abir Achkar As a stylist and image consultant I spend a lot of time shopping and styling clothing. Even when I’m not looking at clothing, I’m probably thinking about it. One of my favourite fashion mania is trend forecasting and taking each trend to a new level to suit different skin tones, body shapes and personalities. This is my game! The end of Paris Fashion Week saw the closing of fashion month. A wide diversity of trends made their way down the runways from Milan to Paris, giving us a full and clear insight into what trends will trickle down into our wardrobes next spring/summer. But first let’s take a dive into Chanel’s SS19 couture collection. Well, it wouldn’t be a Chanel show without a wildly imaginative set up. To set the tone for this show, Chanel constructed a Mediterranean paradise inside the Grand Palais in central Paris, offering a dreamlike respite from the snowy climes outside. A grand Italian villa overlooked a pool edged with real grass, surrounded by palm and orange trees, and framed by high walls painted the colour of a Sicilian sky. Karl Lagerfeld, however, was notably absent from the show. Many of the models wore looks with a focus on feathers and all of them were wearing feather earrings and hair accessories. We've long predicted that feathers will be everywhere in 2019! While beige is set to be one of the biggest colours this spring, pastels and candy hues will also be in high demand over the next few months. We also noticed that every model was wearing pointed-toe stiletto boots with a thin strap at the back, so we guess this would be the ‘it’ shoe for SS19. More new season hits:

Eighties era

The eighties is the decade that keeps on giving! Consider power shoulders, balloon sleeves, bold primary-hued blazers and knee length dresses. Style Tip: If you’re a pear body shape and you need to elongate your shoulders to balance your lower and upper body, then this is your game! Wave goodbye to micro handbags Size matters when it comes to handbags in SS19. Move over micro bags, big handbags are making a comeback. Style tip: If you are petite, go for the medium size not the oversized.

Boiler suit

For effortless yet powerful style, there’s nothing like a boiler suit! Style tip: Boiler or jumpsuits complement mostly all body shapes and you can always accessorize it with a belt to show your waistline.

72

FEBRUARY 2019

Marigold yellow

Yellow isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Integrate it into your wardrobe and invite it to brighten up any look, it’s guaranteed to deliver. Style tip: If yellow doesn’t complement your under skin tone or is not your bestie, then you can wear it away from your face.

Neons

Neon is another trend with surprising staying power. Fluorescent brights are very much on tap for 2019. Go bright or stay home! Style tip: Select one bright piece to pair with your outfit but don’t overdo it because you don’t want to glow in the dark! A bit of spark won’t hurt Sparkle and shine isn’t just a holiday trend. Style tip: Keep your sequined pieces in rotation in 2019 and pair them with casual wear to get extra mileage.

The dye

I know! We were all surprised at the recurrence of this 60s print but it seems tie-dye truly is back in fashion. So there you have it, plenty of runway proof that tie-dye might just replace your monochromatic palette. Style tip: If, like me, you’re not a big fan of this trend, then you might consider wearing a long tie-dyed beach dress on a sunny beach day.

Go bohemian

Rule number one this SS19, clashing patterns must be your mantra! Every print and every colour from geometric and crochet to check and floral, mash up and wear them all at once. Style tip: If you flow in the classic style personality, it’s hard on you to handle this patchwork style! Choose one piece to accessorize your classic outfit like a silk scarf to give your look a bohemian touch.

Suit yourself

Let’s face it, every single person should own at least one power suit. You might not be a suit person but it’s an essential piece you need to consider for SS19. Style tip: To break that corporate feeling, pair it with a tucked-in slogan sweater or tee. Add sneakers or slouchy high knee boots.

You might confuse incidence and incident. They sound similar, but incident refers only to something that happened, not to the frequency with which it happens. After a car accident, the police file an incident report, which is a fancy way of saying they write down what happened. Looking at these reports grouped together can show you if the incidence of accidents at specific intersections in town is on the rise.

ANSWER: D. Incidence means the frequency with which something bad occurs. You’ll hear of “incidences of cancer” or “incidences of war." You hope the incidence is decreasing, not increasing.

HOROSCOPES (March 21 - April 19)

(July 23 - August 22)

ARIES

LEO

Uranus in Aries has pushed your limits, awakening you to a greater force that lives through you. You’re at the end of a process now, and a new moon in Aquarius and a powerful Mars–Uranus conjunction mark a personal breakthrough, asking that you redefine aspirations and reevaluate goals in alignment with who you are today. So who are you and what do you want? This is a reality check awakening you to your true self, desires, and fears, and what drives and motivates you (consciously and unconsciously). You’re unique and have a valuable contribution to make. Avoid comparisons, accept yourself, and you can be liberated. You can live a life that is authentic, abundant, and sustaining. One that gives back to the world. You don’t have all the answers, but the full moon in Virgo is revealing the next steps to materializing a soul vision and where you need to heal. Life never turns out quite as planned, but let go of painful illusions and you’ll see things are better than you think. Be true to yourself and your values, and reach for the stars. You could surprise yourself.

(April 20 - May 20)

TAURUS It’s been a long road to get here, but your ability to surrender to a higher power is liberating you from a situation in which you’ve felt powerless. Your journey is far from over, but you reach a peak and milestone this month (personally, spiritually, and professionally), asking you to pause and realign with your noblest long-term vision and highest ideals. Professionally, you’re starting a new cycle, and this is your journey to the top. Practice what you preach and walk the path with humility. The higher you go, the greater the drop. What you’re attempting is revolutionary and unheard of. Lead by example and you can inspire others with your vision, wisdom, integrity, and dedication. You’re awakening to your true power, authority, and raison d’être. This isn’t just your dream but the universe’s dream for you. You have friends and partners on your side who want to help you materialize that dream. Your job is to have faith. Help will come just when you need it, as if from out of the blue. Trust you have what it takes. You’re learning the power of love to move mountains.

(May 21 - June 20)

GEMINI Professionally, things are brewing, and a new moon in Aquarius is asking you, above all, to keep your perspective this month. Unexpected opportunities that arise could greatly further your ambitions, and you’re free to explore them. Stay true to a longterm vision and you won’t get sidetracked. Sudden developments socially or in a friendship are asking for deeper levels of trust. You needn’t fear losing anything real, so avoid clinging, but dig deeper to become aware of your unconscious fears and desires. If something seems too good to be true, trust your instincts. You have worthy companions on your journey. Offer others freedom (that you also need) and you can deepen connections that go the distance. The Virgo full moon is asking you to rise above your insecurities as you step into the spotlight. This isn’t about your public image or an idea of success but your purest, most soulful vision. Know your bottom line and then you can walk away from what doesn’t align with your values (it’s never worth compromising them). You can materialize a vision, but you must be patient while it takes root deep underground.

(June 21 - July 22)

CANCER Since Uranus entered Aries in 2010, your career has pushed your boundaries, asking you to move past your parents’ limitations to discover what you are capable of. Life is changing rapidly, and unexpected developments suggest you’re nearing a breakthrough professionally and personally. As the Aquarius new moon aligns, things may be up in the air, but you have real support (emotional and financial) from friends and partners who are on your side. This is your chance to reclaim authority in a precarious professional situation. Have more faith in yourself and your abilities, and avoid worrying or clinging to some idea of success, your public image, or living up to expectations. Whatever unfolds, trust that you’re being liberated to live your life on your terms – authentically - as you reach for your dreams. As the Virgo full moon aligns, you’re seeing things in a new light. You’ll need a plan, but where there’s a will, there’s a way. Answering your calling is not always easy, but the rewards far outweigh the effort. And there’s nothing more valuable than a life well lived that serves your noblest ideals.

FEBRUARY 2019

A new moon in your opposite sign of Aquarius marks a new cycle in your relationship, offering a chance to align with others who share your path. But unexpected developments in a relationship or at a distance are asking you to keep an open mind and have faith. It may push your boundaries, but trust that this is the breakthrough you’ve been waiting for. Offer partners the freedom and acceptance that you also desire and you can deepen connections that want to help you succeed. Professionally, you’re going places, but as the Virgo full moon aligns, clarify your values, value yourself, and remember that only you can define your worth. Then you can have healthier boundaries where necessary and release what drains you - be it a lifestyle you’ve outgrown, unnecessary expenses, or toxic relationships. Take stock of your life and give to what matters most without any expectation of what you will receive. Lead by example. Then you can gain, not just materially but also the love and respect of all the hearts you touch. As the Beatles sing, “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.”

(August 23 - September)

VIRGO You’re nearing the end of a phase of transformation that began in 2010 and asked you to confront your fears and let go of trying to control things. As you begin a new life now, ask yourself what brings meaning to your life every day. Do you love your life? What do you value above all else? What are your long-term goals? What do you need to heal and leave behind? You’re reaching a breakthrough in a situation that has taken you to the edge, awakening to a greater reality and greener pastures. The past is gone, but there’s plenty of hope and real love in your present. As the Virgo full moon aligns, your relationships are reflecting an important truth to you about yourself. You can have what you need, but only you are responsible for your happiness. Avoid projection or expectations. Acknowledge the need for healthier boundaries, and let go of toxic situations that deplete you. Even if it feels like a part of your heart is dying, you’re being liberated to invest in relationships that share your goals and values. Love need not feel like bondage. Love can feel like freedom.

(September 23 - October)

LIBRA Since 2010, your relationships have pushed your boundaries. Unexpected developments this month are asking for trust and surrender as you awaken to a deeper reality. You may be getting married, divorced, falling in love (perhaps all over again), or entering a financial partnership. As risky as it feels, you’re not a child anymore. You’re on solid ground, deepening in security. Offer others the freedom they need, and avoid clinging to what’s changing, which will only slow down a process of evolution. You can’t control or change anyone else or lose anything that is real or valuable. As the Virgo full moon aligns, go inward to rest, recharge, and contemplate the greater meaning of your life. You might be secretly worried about something, but you needn’t fear the past repeating itself if you’ve learned your lessons. You can heal what needs healing - be it work, your life, or a relationship – and live the life you dream of. Be honest with yourself and then you can pour your energy into what (and who) heals your heart, body, and soul and give back to the world in a meaningful way.

(October 23 - November)

SCORPIO Since Uranus entered Aries in 2010, you’ve awakened to your deeper purpose. You’re at the end of a healing process now. The Aquarius new moon suggests you’re entering a new cycle of feeling a greater sense of belonging and security – emotionally, financially, and within your commitments. Life is pushing your boundaries and asking you to be innovative. Be humble and unafraid to ask for help. It will require perhaps difficult conversations, but partners and friends are listening and want to help. Be honest with yourself and then you can be honest with others. This is a breakthrough, leveling the playing field and allowing you to create and live authentically with greater freedom and follow your passion daily. As the Virgo full moon aligns, you can have what you wish for, so be careful what you wish for. There’s an endless pool of love and creativity within you and you don’t need much. What you want is to share yourself, your heart, art, and sexuality without worrying about what others think. In truth, you are more lovable than you know. Love yourself and love life and life will love you back.

(November 22 - December)

SAGITTARIUS You’re on fire, creatively and romantically, and ready to take some risks. But unfolding unpredictable developments might feel like a jolt to the heart, awakening desires you never expected but cannot deny. Work on self-acceptance and love yourself, even the parts you consider weird. You’re expanding in self-awareness and have skills and talents you take for granted. Trust and have more faith in yourself and your abilities as you dare follow your passion. An idea is genius, but you needn’t rush. Life is sweet and meant to be savored. Take things one day at a time, put your heart into everything you do, and give to what brings you joy without expectations. A full moon in Virgo highlights a professional situation, reminding you of the real reason you do what you do. As you see the past in a new light, you’re realizing your power to live more authentically. Your fortunes are turning, but let go of superficial attachments to money, success, and recognition. Your hard work will pay off, but the reward of a life well lived while giving back to the world is priceless.

(December 22 - January 19)

CAPRICORN Uranus in your house of home, family, security, and belonging may have felt like you were walking through a minefield. Unpredictable developments on the home front are pushing you out of your comfort zone. But this is a final breakthrough, allowing you to leave a difficult chapter behind and rediscover your inner child. You’re growing in self-esteem and emotional and financial security, but it begins with you loving and valuing yourself more. Be honest about what you want and who you are today. Things are stabilizing amid upheaval. There is a way forward, and life can be sweeter and simpler if you let it. Push past your childhood insecurities and you can be freed to live more fearlessly and deeply in the present. The Virgo full moon suggests what you need is patience, perspective, and imagination. It’s all in the mind. Clarify your longterm goals, envision your most hopeful future, and have faith in a greater divine plan. With time, dedication, and effort, you can get there. But the way there is from here, and the journey is the destination. Be here, now.

(January 20 - February 18)

AQUARIUS Happy birthday, Aquarius! The annual new moon in Aquarius is a personal new cycle, offering you a chance to reinvent and redefine yourself. Who are you when you think no one is watching? What do you secretly dream of? What motivates your choices and actions? Be extremely honest with yourself – all flows from that. You’re learning information and coming to mind-blowing realizations. An idea is genius, but if something upsets you, avoid reacting in anger. Awareness can be painful, but you’re being freed of false perceptions, learning where you stand, on fertile ground. A financial situation, marriage, sexual relationship, or domestic partnership is evolving and stabilizing with the Virgo full moon to bring you the greater emotional and financial security you need. Learn your lessons, but forgive and forget. Let go of expectations, superficial attachments (especially to sex, money, poverty consciousness, parents’ values), and worrying about what’s out of your hands. Ultimately, everything material is transient. Only love is real and eternal. Be patient with the process. Nurture your roots, and the tree of your life will in time bear fruit for you, the greater world, and generations to come.

(February 19 - March 20)

PISCES It’s not what you know but who you know. You’re connecting with people who can help you further your goals, but if you’re not sure who to trust, move slowly until you have clarity. The Aquarius new moon is drawing you into a soul search. A dream isn’t impossible, but you must dare to acknowledge it. You’re nearing a breakthrough in a financial or personal commitment, asking you to be true to your values. What do you secretly and openly want and at what cost? Do you practice what you preach? You can lie to the world but not to yourself. Your word is your worth, and without integrity you have nothing. Selfish motives and desires will be your downfall. Altruistic goals will uplift you. The Virgo full moon is bringing your relationships to light. Someone or something is deep under your skin. The boundaries between you and another are being blurred, but avoid expectations and projections. Only you are responsible for your happiness. Ask for what you need and pay attention to who shows up. You aren’t alone. You are all one.
