THREE BRONCOS NAMED ALL-AMERICANS After leading the men’s soccer program to new heights in 2015, three Broncos received NCAA Division II All-American recognition. It marked the first time in program history that three student-athletes had earned those honors in the same year, raising the all-time total of CPP men’s soccer AllAmericans from five to eight. Gonzalez Diaz received the accolade after he tallied 13 goals and five assists in his senior season. Justyn Peeples, a Riverside native, bolstered the defense and also earned All-American status as a senior. Another fourth-year, Alexander Turkson, scored nine goals to also become an All-American.

2015 Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer BEST IN THE WEST & 2ND NATIONALLY The Cal Poly Pomona men’s soccer program completed its most successful season in program history in 2015, finishing as the national runner-up for Division II. Among the long list of achievements for the 2015 squad, Broncos’ men’s soccer amassed an overall record of 17-3-3 to match the program’s single season wins record. CPP also won the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament and West Region title. The Broncos defeated a pair of opponents ranked within the top 10 nationally, including a 1-0 victory over Rockhurst in the Final Four. After owning an 0-1 record in NCAA Tournament matches prior to the 2015 campaign, CPP collected its first four postseason wins en route to an appearance in the D-II National Championship game. With a stellar job in the tournament, three Broncos earned a spot on the NCAA Championships All-Tournament Team. Making his way on the team was Alexander Turkson, who secured CPP’s game-winning goal in the Final Four matchup against Rockhurst. Also being named to the squad were Eshel Chardon, a midfielder from Rosh Haain, Israel, and Pablo Quevedo, a senior goalkeeper from Santander, Spain. Chardon produced a solid all-around performance in the tournament, providing Turkson and Justyn Peeples with the corner kick that led to the winning goal in the Final Four matchup. Pablo Quevedo was one of the Green and Gold’s defensive standouts in the first game, boasting two world class saves in the goal and keeping the nationally-ranked Rockhurst squad scoreless. The Broncos served as hosts for several stages of the postseason, including the CCAA Tournament and the NCAA First and Second Rounds. At the CCAA postseason banquet held at Cal Poly Pomona’s Bronco Student Center, Christian Gonzalez Diaz was named the CCAA Offensive Player of the Year while Nadeer Ghantous was selected as the Freshman of the Year.

2015 CROSS COUNTRY RECAP 2 ALL-AMERICANS & ANOTHER GREAT SEASON For the second time in the last three years, Cal Poly Pomona men’s cross country has secured a top-10 finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships. On Nov. 21 in Joplin, Mo., the Broncos placed ninth overall. With the Green and Gold’s stellar finish, two members of the team earned All-American honors. The top finisher for the Broncos with a 30:25.00 in the 10K race was Mark Huizar, CPP’s all-time record holder in the 8k category. With his 40th-place finish, the Broncos’ senior earned himself an All-American honor. With his pace just seconds behind Huizar, the Fontana native ran a 30:29.60 in the event and provided the Green and Gold with 30 points. The nationals appearance was the third-consecutive nationals appearance for the Green and Gold. In 2013 the squad finished eighth-nationally and last season they finished 16th. The women’s cross country program also put together an impressive campaign in 2015. Marissa Nickles put together an impressive performance, finishing 10th individually to narrowly miss a qualification for the NCAA D-II National Championships. A senior from Westminster, Nickles crossed the line in 21:30.57. With that time, Nickles moves up to No. 2 in the Broncos’ record book for the 6,000-meter distance. The Broncos’ women’s cross country program has plenty to look forward to, as two of the team’s top five finishers at the West Regionals are freshman while another is a sophomore. Joining Nickles with All-Region recognition was junior Ashli Baddorf, who placed 24th with a time of 21:54.98. At the conference championships in San Francisco on Oct. 25, Baddorf moved up in the CPP leaderboard for 10K as well. Baddorf, an Azusa native and Covina High School graduate, earned All-CCAA honors by placing fourth individually in the race with a time of 21:38.9.

The Broncos defeated San Francisco State 3-1 in the first round of the CCAA Tournament before falling to Sonoma State at the semifinal stage. Four Broncos received All-Conference accolades at the postseason banquet. Senior Nicoletta Stork earned a spot on the All-CCAA First Team, while senior Zoe Herrera and freshman Kristen Hamlin are included on the All-CCAA Second Team and sophomore Deanna Blaine was featured as an All-CCAA Honorable Mention. MEN'S BASKETBALL ADVANCES AGAIN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FEATURES BRIGHT FUTURE

ABOVE: Head coach Greg Kamansky is recognized for becoming the all-time leader in coaching wins for Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball. The record-setting victory came on Jan. 9, 2016 when CPP defeated Chico State 69-56 at Kellogg Arena. Kamansky now owns a career record of 338132, representing a winning percentage of .719.

BELOW: Standout student-athlete Mary Williams was one of 61 Broncos to participate in the 2016 Commencement ceremonies. A center from Rialto, Williams earned All-Conference First Team honors in 2015-16 after leading the Broncos in scoring with 11.6 points per game. She also led CPP in field goal percentage, free throws made and rebounds.

After jumping out to a 12-0 record for the best start in program history, the Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball program went 22-8 overall in 2015-16 while the team’s defense ranked second nationally. The Broncos advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth-consecutive year, marking an incredible feat for the program’s senior class. Since the 2009-10 season, the Broncos’ defense has consistently ranked within the top three at the NCAA Division II level. The CPP defense has finished at the No. 1 spot twice, at No. 2 four times, and at No. 3 once. Through 2015-16, senior Jordan Faison led the way with All-West Region honors before being selected to the Division II All-Star Game. Faison led the team with 16.9 points per game as he sank 199 field goals to reach his 507-point mark. Faison also led the team in rebounds with 7.4 per contest. Joining Faison on the All-CCAA was fellow fourth-year Barry Bell. The Broncos’ 2015-16 playoff win was a 57-50 victory over San Francisco State at Kellogg Arena. The CPP women’s basketball program reached the CCAA Tournament for the 22nd time in the 22-year history of the event. Three Broncos earned All-Conference honors, including Jordyn Shane being selected as the Freshman of the Year, Mary Williams receiving All-CCAA First Team accolades and Priscilla Brooks featured as an Honorable Mention. Williams led CPP in total points and points per game, clocking in at 313 and 11.6 in that category. Her field goal percentage led the team as well and, if not for not meeting the minimum requirement, would have led the conference. The senior also led CPP’s squad in free throws made and leads the conference in offensive boards. Brooks ranked second in the conference with 256 total rebounds and an average of 9.5 a game.

BRONCOS TRAVEL TO TAIWAN The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball program took its talent into the international spotlight this August. Representing the United States, the Broncos completed a 12-day trip to Taiwan for the Buddha Light International Association (BLIA) Cup tournament held Aug. 16 through Aug. 21 at the Kaohsiung Arena. CPP finished second overall in the event, earning a 4-1 record. The tournament featured eight male teams and eight female teams, with representation from the USA, France, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Korea, the Philippines, and People’s Republic of China. The BLIA Cup is a sport cultural exchange organized by the Fo Guang Shan Monastery, intended to promote the sport of basketball among universities and to provide young student-athletes with the experience of competition in large-scale tournaments. It marked the second international trip for Kamansky in 2016. In May, he traveled to Greece to present in a coaches clinic and share his basketball knowledge with other coaches from across the globe.

BASEBALL REPEATS AS WEST CHAMPIONS BRONCOS PLACE 3RD NATIONALLY FOR D-II For the second-straight year, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball program captured the West Region title and finished at No. 3 nationally for NCAA Division II. The Broncos put together a 42-19 overall mark in 2016 and went 21-5 at Scolinos Field, the team’s home field that featured night games in 2016 for the first time in program history.CPP swept through the West Regional, going 4-0 while defeating top-seeded host Cal Baptist twice. Advancing to Cary, N.C., once again for the World Series, the Broncos went 2-2 as they collected wins over nationally-ranked opponents Southern Indiana and Central Missouri. The All-Tournament Team was released after the champions had been crowned, and making the team for the Broncos was Peter Bayer. His stellar performance on the mound against Central Missouri earned him his spot. In the game against the UCM, the senior pitched eight innings of shutout ball. He struck out 14 batters and allow just a single hit, a double in the eighth inning. Right-hander Michael Koval earned All-American recognition, throwing 96.2 innings and allowing just 74 hits. He struck out 73 batters and only allowed five extra-base hits with zero homers. Koval maintained an earned run average of 1.86. The Broncos finished the regular season as the top team in the CCAA South Division and the team featured plenty of All-Conference honorees. Koval was selected as the CCAA Most Valuable Pitcher while Nic Hernandez earned Freshman of the Year selection. Joining Koval on the All-CCAA First Team were Max Bethell, Ryan Alsworth, Chris Stratton, Jared James and Caleb Romo. Featured on the Second Team was Daniel Pitts while Jason Padlo and Ryan Webberley were Honorable Mention honorees.

FIVE MORE BRONCOS ENTER MINOR LEAGUES With five more Broncos entering the minor leagues in 2016, the total number of former CPP baseball student-athletes playing professionally has risen to 15. The CPP pitchers proved to be a highlight of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, including Peter Bayer going in the ninth round to the Tampa Bay Rays, Michael Koval earning an 11th-round selection by the Seattle Mariners and Ryan Olson being picked by the Cincinnati Reds in round No. 13. Jared James proved to be the fourth and final Bronco to be picked in the MLB Draft as he was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 34th round. James

actually reached base in each of his first 19 games with the Danville Braves (Single A affiliate). That impressive feat follows the fact that he reached base in 56 of the 59 games he played with the Broncos. Just a few days after the draft, CPP team captain Max Bethell signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Through his four years as a Bronco, Bethell finished at No. 2 in program history for games started with 50 and No. 3 in wins with 30. He led CPP to the Division II World Series in back-toback seasons as the Broncos finished third nationally in 2015 and 2016.

BASEBALL LIGHTS INSTALLED FIRST PHASE OF CAMPAIGN IS COMPLETE Before Cal Poly Pomona baseball won 9-8 on Feb. 5 to officially open its season, the first “unofficial” game under the new lights took place on Saturday, Jan. 30 between alumni and current Broncos. In a ceremony prior to first pitch, alum Danny Andrews joined University President Soraya Coley, head coach Randy Betten and captains Max Bethell and Ryan Webberley in turning the key on the new lights and illuminating a bright future for CPP baseball. “Tonight, you’re going to see night baseball for the first time the 56-year history of this program,” Director of Athletics Brian Swanson said. “It’s most fitting that our alumni, our current student-athletes and our Cal Poly Pomona community and family, are playing the first game. I can’t think of anything more representative of Coach Scolinos.” Planning for the facility began several years ago with further plans to include, once fully completed: stadium-style seating with chair back seats that will replace the existing bleachers; permanent restrooms, concession stand and press box; enhanced batting cages; a fully equipped clubhouse; and a donor

2015 Newsletter | Page 7

recognition wall. “I especially want to thank Danny Andrews for having the vision,” Coley said, “and remembering what this experience was like here at Cal Poly Pomona and how important it was in his own development to have Coach Scolinos and the values and character that was reflected in those interactions with those young men. Danny has decided to pass it on. So many of us are blessed over the years but not everyone looks at how they can pass it on.” The lights portion of the project was initiated with a gift of $500,000 from Andrews. Over the past year, additional gifts have come in which have helped to move the project ahead. In the fall of 2014 a gift of $600,000 from an anonymous source was used by the University to fulfill the needed funding for the installation of the lights. A pledge of $20,000 helped lead to the installation of a new scoreboard as well. “This is a long project but just visualize the next four or five years and all the improvements that can be made if we all join forces,” Andrews said. “Have a great game, may the lights work and have a great evening!”
