Letters from the Editors

Hello! My name is Marcus, your friendly neighborhood publicity chair! I am only one half of the team that will be working on creating the first ever Cal Poly Pomona CKI StoryTime newsletters! We (my co editor Tina and I) are here to make sure that our club, division, district and the people of the world know what’s going on with CPP CKI. We will share our adventures and all the knowledge that we found while searching to discover more about the power of service, fellowship and leadership. We will show you wonderful photos and graphics and articles and event filled calendars for you all to indulge in. There will be featured members of CPP CKI every month and even a Story Time section where members will share their favorite tales (both real and fiction.) We will work to teach you all more about Circle K at CPP and what we as a club stand for. As well as finding ways to inspire you. We want to be your rock and when we talk it lights a fire in you! ( If you know the reference then we should become acquainted.) Hi everyone! Hope your summers are going well, whether you’re doing summer school, relaxing with Netflix, going out in the SoCal sun, or all of the above! Remember to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen! Summer is also typically the “slow” period for Circle K with people going back home for summer. Despite this, our club still has events throughout the summer, and hopefully, this newsletter will keep you up to date with those. We have lots of exciting things planned for the rest of the year, so stay tuned for those plans *cough Awake-a-thon cough*. In the mean time, read up on our club and what we’ve been up to with our brand new newsletter! This is our club’s first edition of the newsletter, and I hope that it’ll be to your liking! We’ve worked hard on it, and it’ll only get better from here, so enjoy!

Chris Ortego

President 2015-2016

If you ever have any questions or want to submit something to be featured in the newsletter please feel free to contact me with the email listed on the contacts page at the end of this newsletter! Enjoy!

Claremont Kiwanis Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast By Jason Chou On the Fourth of July, Circle K at Cal Poly Pomona and Key Club at Claremont High School had the opportunity to help out Claremont Kiwanis serve a Pancake Breakfast at Claremont Memorial Park as part of an Independence Day celebration at the park. Proceeds from the breakfast help organizations and events such as Ability First and Best B.E.T. The shift started early from 6 A.M. for set up and ended around 10:30 A.M as Kiwanis family members cooked pancakes and sausages, served the food, poured syrup, and served drinks such as coffee and orange juice. Afterwards, the Kiwanis family loaded a lot of equipment, furniture, drinks, and other things needed from this morning and for their ice cream booth that night. I had the pleasure of meeting and working with the Claremont Kiwanis club for the first time especially as one Kiwanian seemed to be really interested with me being a civil engineering major.

At first, I was pouring syrup for everyone who wanted syrup on their pancakes but later on I also took on the responsibility of cooking and flipping the pancakes. Placing batter on the grills, flipping a dozen or so pancakes in a batch, and greasing the grills in a quick manner while producing quality pancakes were slightly more difficult tasks than I thought it would be especially because my hands were not used to the heat of the grill. The lines were constantly packed and very long as many people including runners from the 5K wanted to enjoy a nice breakfast. This event was a nice way to help out and spend time with the Claremont community and Kiwanis especially on Independence Day.

Being a Family Head By Jennifer Sanchez, MD&E Chair Howdy! Jenn Sanchez here to talk about my experience this past year as a Family Head. I got the opportunity to run a Family of 13 wonderful members alongside my partner, Norton. Being a family head helped me not only to grow within Circle K but as a leader as well. It was my job to check up on my family members to make sure that they felt welcome in the club through hosting socials like family dinners. In the position I got to learn so many things that I thought I already knew how to do. All of which I find myself improving in on a daily basis. I was forced to develop time management skills and improve my communication skills because I had people relying on me to do my part. I learned that my Family looked to me as a source of advice and that it was my job to keep informed on upcoming events and relaying this information to my family to ensure they had the best club experience. Most importantly though I had the opportunity to counsel my family and help new members with any questions they had about club and school stuff. My favorite part about being a family head was being able to serve as a support system to new members as well as returning members. Being a family head taught me that when it comes to leading any number of people the little things count. Things like remembering birthdays and random text messages just to check up on people go a long way. One of the perks of being a family head is having an amazing support system to help when you need it. I was lucky enough to have such a great team to work with. Everyone was so chill to work with and I especially looked forward to coordinating inter-family ideas because I got the chance to hear great ideas as well as to contribute some myself. The family head system taught me a lot in the way of being a mentor and I can only hope that Family Heads this year get to have a similar experience.

Cal Poly Pomona Circle K Tabling By Sean Quilatan Our club, Cal Poly Pomona Circle K, participated in tabling for the orientation of incoming students. Our purpose was to persuade incoming freshman to join our club. We explained what Circle K is, what to expect from the club, what opportunities that are available, etc. When I was tabling for the past two orientations, I felt so happy. Seeing incoming students interested in our club was just a wonderful feeling. When I talked to some of them, I get to know their backstory (where are you from, what’s your major, interest, etc.). It was amazing how I could relate to them because I was in that same

position when I was a freshman. Seeing it from a different point-of-view was an amazing experience. I also saw some of my friends who are also incoming freshman and I was glad they were interested in Circle K. If there is something that I can improve on, it is eye contact and keeping it short. I have the tendency to doze off because I love to talk a lot. Even though there is so much I could talk about Circle K, I needed to keep it short, have the members experience it for themselves. Overall, tabling for Circle K was a great experience and I encourage all members to do it!

STORY TIME

BROUGHT TO YOU THIS MONTH BY: MARCUS CASTILE

O ur tale begins with the untold visions of a land distant from our own, such a land only sought by the most involved dreamers who wish to take on the worlds in which the create. This world now sleeps silently in one dreamer's subconscious driving their imagination to its full ability, so lets begin. Simply defined are the answers i seek. left with no thought of my own, but only darkness as the truth that I have always been shown. To dig for what I am i must enter a place outside of my being, venture to realms unknown, fight demons of bone. By all who know of this mystery , the answer rings the same with all, “truth can only be found in the neglected history.” With only a faint knowledge of what i seek and the requirements which i must meet, I set out on my journey. Hollow as they may be my stead of blue is the only company that will share this road with me. AS we venture they will keep my sanity for a journey traveled alone only brings forth the darkest thoughts. I only wish that the darkest of one that haunts my nights will not pursue me on my journey to find true light. This creature stands tall with the figure of one once human before they left the world of Geo with a fall. No longer what they used to be, with memories locked away so that they may no longer see as we must to maintain humanity.

Dark is how it was seen yet when it departed from its simple form red flame is all that could be seen. The beast was young, something new to this world placed in such a place so that it may have its fun. Its creator spent time providing the beast with its rare camouflage qualities so that it could sneak up on those unexpecting such volity. I stared the beast down prepared to take its might, but it only stood there watching, waiting not worth its original fright. I approached them where they stood hoping that my defensive stance won’t bothers them as it normally should. Its wings retract as the creature begins to relax and take on a new feelings that goes against what I had been told. Now the worry for something more not coming to fruition is only a passed concern of premature judiscion. Standing at I am atop the world I reach out to feel the openness that one can only feel when not whole. With the dragon at my side and my stead no longer alone in its ride, I can sense a feeling of a journey conquered not far from my reach. Here now before my eyes is what I wish never before to see. The one single dark shape that I know will do everything to destroy me. I will defend from darkness without giving in, or so I thought. May darkness never win.

I travel to a pass to pursue something new. To find something dark that will pair well with my campions blue. In this world a light cannot be without its shadow cast so in order to find the light i seek, my range of acceptance must become vast. Stacked as they are, dark, black and at a distance so far. I have found the perfect flare to create the needed trio that will become more than fair. Approaching the shape I must be weary for the wrong move can bring forth the beast’s fury of fire and fright. Not only would it work to reduce me to ashes, but also take a toll on my minds own might.
