We have been working behind the scenes for months to present this holiday treasure. The hard-working, talented dancers are just one component of this fabulous show. The teamwork among parents, faculty, dancers, creative personnel and the professional stage crew (IATSE Local #16) and the staff at the Marin Center is a testament to the tight knit, supportive Stapleton community. As you may know, this fall season has presented a myriad of challenges, as we worked to complete the renovations to our beautiful new home. Originally we planned to open our new facility in September. Here it is, December, and at last, the end is in sight! We are so grateful to Doug Andelin, Shirley Marelli, Dennis Marelli, the Playhouse in San Anselmo, San Anselmo Recreation, and Alma del Tango. Their assistance insured that our students had a place to dance when unanticipated construction delays interfered with our plans. Thank you to our community of dancers and parents for their support, generosity and understanding. Your kindness has made this process an experience I will always treasure.
THE PLAYHOUSE 27 KENSINGTON ROAD SAN ANSELMO
Special thanks to the leadership team of committee chairs that I have had the pleasure of working with-seventeen different committees support our production needs! From costumes and childcare, to concessions and catering, to set transport and makeup, to poster hanging and raffle (and more!) - we could not do this without them. I’d like to extend our appreciation and thanks to our Board of Directors and to every parent volunteer. Their work is crucial to our success and their good will and enthusiastic support sets a tremendous example for our youth. Best wishes for a magical holiday season and happiness and good health in the New Year. Stapleton Graduating Seniors Catania Ayala Four years ago, I never imagined ballet would
be such a huge part in my life. Stapleton allowed this love that I have for dance only to grow. It is a place that has not only taught me classical ballet technique, but it has helped me develop into the person I am now. I am eternally grateful for all the teachers and faculty, and the community-- that I am proud to say I am part of--that Stapleton has built. I can’t express how lucky I am for the opportunities Shelley and Charles have created for me and their teachings will be something I will forever cherish and remember. Though this will be my last Nutcracker with Stapleton, I hope it won’t be last one I perform.
India Blaisdell
I have been dancing at Stapleton since I was two years old, and this year will be my 11th year in the Nutcracker. I am so grateful for all of the opportunities that have been opened to me throughout the years, and I know that Stapleton will always hold a special place in my heart as my second home. To my teachers---Charles, Virginia, Shelley, and Lacey---and to the countless friends I’ve made, thank you so much for believing in me through thick and thin, your support is what gets me through the rough days. Stapleton has made me a better dancer and a better person, and for that I could never be more thankful.
Ella Boscoe
I can still remember the mesmerizing feeling I got seeing The Nutcracker for the first time, and I cannot even imagine what fall will be like next year without rehearsing for the ballet that has been a part of my life for so long. Coming to Stapleton, I immediately felt welcomed by the amazing community of dancers and teachers, I and am so grateful for the friendships I have formed and the memories I have made in class and rehearsals over the past three years. I have grown immensely because of ballet and pushed myself to new limits, and I am so thankful for this passion that I know I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
Kayla Campbell
Stapleton means the world to me for so many reasons. In the eleven years I’ve been here, it has become less of a place I’ve learned ballet and more like a second home. The amazing teachers and dancers I’ve had the pleasure to work with have become my family, and I don’t know who I would be without it. My love for dancing has become almost a part of my DNA and I have Stapleton to thank for that. I love SSPA and everyone involved in making it an amazing place to be with all my heart. I couldn’t be more grateful to have gotten the opportunity to have grown up here. There truly is nowhere like Stapleton and I’m going to miss it very much.
Taylor Conti I started Stapleton at age two in a parent-toddler
class taught by Ms. Stapleton. I didn’t know at that time the impact Stapleton School would have on my life. Through the last fifteen years, Stapleton became a home away from home, one I couldn’t leave even as my other extracurriculars came and went. I’m forever grateful that little two year old me in her ridiculously pink tutu ended up here. Thank you to the entire Stapleton community: the
teachers who believed in me and helped me develop my artistry, my fellow dancers that supported me and helped me become the person that I am today, and the families and staff that worked to make our productions possible. My experiences, friendships, and lessons from Stapleton are something I’ll treasure forever.
Sonia Lachter
I came to Stapleton at a time when I wasn’t sure if ballet was really worth it anymore. Having danced since I was three, I’ve often wondered why I continued dancing instead of playing soccer or joining the ski team. Stapleton helped me answer the question of why I dance. It has allowed me refuge from long nights of homework and a physical outlet for my feelings. It’s has taught me how my aspirations can both clash and conjoin with others to create something beautiful. Stapleton has also given me the invaluable experience of volunteering with Performing Stars Marin to give girls from Marin City, just a town away, the opportunity to dance which I value so much but often take for granted. Teaching the girls the language of ballet and seeing their joy at mastering a step really made clear to me why I dance, and why Stapleton is the place where I do it.
Alana Reiss I started Stapleton at 5, solely to fulfill my dream
of dancing in the Nutcracker. Now, twelve years later, I have danced every role from a little mouse to the Snow Trio. Looking back I feel so grateful not only for the lessons I’ve learned, but for the person I’ve become. Ballet has taught me to never fear failure, and to learn from my mistakes. I learned how to laugh when things go the unexpected way. I gained the invaluable attribute of fierce (Alana Reiss, cont...) determination and endless dedication. Ballet taught me passion and how to express emotions that only dance can portray. I’d like to thank the incredible teachers that I’ve had over the years, I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without their endless love and support.
Lauren Roberts
Dance is my air; I cannot imagine a day without it. SSPA has provided me with a second home where I feel challenged and supported every day. I am grateful to Ms. Stapleton for holding us to high standards. I am grateful to Charles for making me smile, laugh and for always believing in me. I am grateful to Shelley for her artistic excellence and calm, wise council, and to Lacey, for her generous support as I prepare for college auditions. Although I joined only five years ago, I feel very much a part of the Stapleton Family. I have made lifelong friends here. Dance has enriched my life in innumerable ways and has taught me perseverance, resilience and the importance of pursuing my passions.

NUTCRACKER
Clara and Fritz are given a Christmas party to which Drosselmeyer, a magician, brings an assortment of amazing toys and dolls that can dance. He presents a Nutcracker to Clara, and she and her brother quarrel over it. Later it is thrown aside when they go to bed. Clara is thinking about her Nutcracker and can not sleep. She sneaks downstairs to the darkened living room and finds it leading a troop of toy soldiers in a battle against an army of mice. The toy soldiers win the battle and the Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome prince. The prince rewards Clara for her help by taking her to the Kingdom of the Sweets. On their way, they cross a country where they see snowflakes dancing together.

History of Stapleton Ballet Nutcracker Virginia Stapleton created her first Nutcracker in 1989, when she first opened her school. Virginia refers to it as a “primitive version” of the ballet; and it was presented in the Drake High School Little Theatre. Much like the Stapleton School, the annual production of The Nutcracker has grown incredibly! From Drake’s Little Theatre the production moved to the College of Marin, where it was performed for two years. Back then, Virginia collaborated with David McNaughton to create her own version of the classic ballet. Her son R-T helped build sets, and her best friend Karen Barar sewed costumes. In 1997 and 1998, the show was presented at Angelico Hall, on the campus of Dominican University. In 1999, Virginia took the leap to the “big time”, moving the annual production to the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium. In 2000, she reworked all the original choreography, putting her own version together, and it has evolved with input from collaborators such as Vasillii Mountian, Charles Torres, and this year, Shelley Scott. The show is wholly Virginia Stapleton’s artistic vision: from the sets, to the costumes, to the props; Virginia has her eye on every last detail. The Stapleton Ballet’s Nutcracker distinguishes itself from many others in the Bay Area in several ways. First and foremost, it is an inclusive production. Any Stapleton dance student, age 6 or older, that wishes to perform, is cast in a role. This insures that all students may have the incredible experience of being part of a professional production. Through their participation, these students learn dedication, commitment, discipline and teamwork. Parents of performers serve on committees that support the production: they do jobs as varied as fitting and altering costumes to applying makeup and dressing and working backstage as stagehands. It is a true community effort. In addition, Virginia prides herself on creating a vibrant production, a Nutcracker that is exciting and engaging for children and adults of all ages. -Sharon Burns, Managing Director
