STAPLETON BALLET PRESENTS

Save the Date: April 2, 2016 Marin Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium | 1pm & 5pm

Welcome to the 27th Annual Nutcracker Holiday Greetings! The 2015/2016 school year is lined up with many wonderful and ambitious projects. The season starts off with our joyous production of “The Nutcracker.” To add more challenges for our dancers, Vassilii Mountian was recruited to choreograph a new Russian variation and Shelley Scott to create a new Reed Flute variation, which is enhanced by the beautiful new costumes created by Karen Barar. Nick Cann, our set designer, has added the final set enhancement which you will see in the Waltz of the Flowers. Our theatre company will be performing our sixth annual production of the musical, “A Christmas Carol” December 17th to 20th. The spring show will be the very popular “Fiddler on the Roof ”, presented May 6th to 17th at the Playhouse. The crown jewel of our year will be “Swan Lake”. This full length production will be presented in the Veterans Memorial Auditorium on Saturday, April 2. Guest artists and our one- hundred thirty youth company dancers will collaborate to make a rich and memorable production of this quintessential classical ballet. The Board of Directors and I, along with professional guidance and assistance from JLL, continue our search for a facility that will provide the much needed space to train our students. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely, Virginia Stapleton

Happy Holidays! The energetic, talented dancers in our cast are just one component of the show you are about to enjoy. A multitude of people have been working behind the scenes, some for months, to bring the Nutcracker to life! The teamwork among dancers, parents, faculty, creative personnel and the professional stage crew of IATSE Local #16 is a testament to the tight knit and supportive Stapleton School community. Special thanks to those taking on leadership roles as committee chair people-this year we have seventeen committees supporting our production needs, and each committee is led by a chairperson or team of chairpeople. I’d like to personally extend my appreciation and thanks to each of them for making time in their busy lives to take on such an important job. We are very grateful for our dedicated, hardworking Board of Directors. Bravo to all our parent volunteers, whose work is crucial to the success of the production. Your good will and enthusiastic support sets a tremendous example for our youth. Special thanks to our “Karens”- the talented designer and seamstress, Karen Barar, and the costume team leader, Karen Dunn. Karen B. designed and created the beautiful new costumes in Act Two’s Reed Flutes, as well as the Party Scene and Angel costumes. Karen D. coordinates all the costume fittings and alterations and manages a team of twenty seamstresses. Best wishes for a magical holiday season, and happiness and good health in the New Year. Thank you Stapleton for seven wonderful years of dancing. Dancing is sort of like mountain climbing. No, make that canoeing. Nothing is more adventurous than canoeing. No, I want to change that back to mountain climbing. The best part about dancing, and mountain climbing, is that the reward comes from your hard work. I can’t thank Charles, Jenny, and Virginia enough for always pushing me and helping me reach my goals or just being there for comfort. I also want to thank Sharon for being superhuman and all the staff for creating a great experience. I’ve made so many wonderful memories and friends at Stapleton. Y’all won’t be forgotten. Thank you, Stapleton. Keep climbing!

NUTCRACKER

Clara and Fritz are given a Christmas party to which Drosselmeyer, a magician, brings an assortment of amazing toys and dolls that can dance. He presents a Nutcracker to Clara, and she and her brother quarrel over it. Later it is thrown aside when they go to bed. Clara is thinking about her Nutcracker and can not sleep. She sneaks downstairs to the darkened living room and finds it leading a troop of toy soldiers in a battle against an army of mice. The toy soldiers win the battle and the Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome prince. The prince rewards Clara for her help by taking her to the Kingdom of the Sweets. On their way, they cross a country where they see snowflakes dancing together.

History of Stapleton Ballet Nutcracker Virginia Stapleton created her first Nutcracker in 1989, when she first opened her school. Virginia refers to it as a “primitive version” of the ballet; and it was presented in the Drake High School Little Theatre. Much like the Stapleton School, the annual production of The Nutcracker has grown incredibly! From Drake’s Little Theatre the production moved to the College of Marin, where it was performed for two years. Back then, Virginia collaborated with David McNaughton to create her own version of the classic ballet. Her son R-T helped build sets, and her best friend Karen Barar sewed costumes. In 1997 and 1998, the show was presented at Angelico Hall, on the campus of Dominican University. In 1999, Virginia took the leap to the “big time”, moving the annual production to the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium. In 2000, she reworked all the original choreography, putting her own version together, and it has evolved with input from collaborators such as Vasillii Mountian, Charles Torres, and this year, Shelley Scott. The show is wholly Virginia Stapleton’s artistic vision: from the sets, to the costumes, to the props; Virginia has her eye on every last detail. The Stapleton Ballet’s Nutcracker distinguishes itself from many others in the Bay Area in several ways. First and foremost, it is an inclusive production. Any Stapleton dance student, age 6 or older, that wishes to perform, is cast in a role. This insures that all students may have the incredible experience of being part of a professional production. Through their participation, these students learn dedication, commitment, discipline and teamwork. Parents of performers serve on committees that support the production: they do jobs as varied as fitting and altering costumes to applying makeup and dressing and working backstage as stagehands. It is a true community effort. In addition, Virginia prides herself on creating a vibrant production, a Nutcracker that is exciting and engaging for children and adults of all ages. -Sharon Burns, Managing Director

Ashley is excited for her fourth season as The Maid and enjoys sharing her ever-growing knowledge of the dance world with her students at Stapleton School of the Performing Arts. Dana Cherry (Party Scene Parent) is thrilled to be back performing in her 6th Nutcracker with Stapleton. Dana works as a school counselor with the Petaluma School District, and is a children’s singing instructor with Singers Marin. A native to Marin, where she has been performing since age 8, some of her favorite productions have included Pirates of Penzance with Ross Valley Players, Urinetown and Gypsy with Novato Theater Company, Man of La Mancha, Guys and Dolls, and Wizard of Oz with the Mountain Play, and Seussical, A Christmas Carol and Oliver with Stapleton Theatre Company. Lisa Churton (Mrs. Stahlbaum) is thrilled to be doing her 4th Nutcracker with Stapleton Ballet. She spent her childhood dancing ballet, and performed many roles in The Nutcracker. Now as a parent to a Soldier and by performing in the Party Scene, she is excited to be part of The Nutcracker again.

David Churton (Party Scene Parent) is thrilled to be dancing his 4th Nutcracker with Stapleton Ballet, joining Helene for her 7th. Special thanks to the Stapleton team for its great work in our community and the joy The Nutcracker brings to so many families. Cheers and Happy Holidays to all! Dan Dunn (Party Scene Parent) has watched his daughters Abigail and Hannah perform in the Stapleton ballet for many years, and now, Dan is thrilled to be able to lace up his dancing shoes too. When not performing before rapturous audiences, Dan can be found teaching economics, coaching basketball, serving as a board member for non-profits, fly fishing, or providing sewing advice to his wife. Mark Gmelin (Party Scene Parent) is happy to return for his 7th Stapleton Nutcracker. He’s a materials engineer and enjoys dance parties at home with his toddler Myles, and special wife Ms. Megan. Megan Cherry Gmelin (Party Scene Parent) also known as Miss Megan, is thrilled to be performing in her 24th Stapleton Nutcracker. Megan danced as a buffoon in Virginia’s first Nutcracker production in 1988 at Drake High School Theatre. After missing four years of productions while obtaining a BA in dance, Megan returned to Stapleton in 2004 as a faculty member and has been performing as a party parent ever since. This year she has the pleasure of performing with her sister Dana and her husband Mark. David Hafner (Party Scene Parent) performed the role of Mother Ginger in Stapleton’s Nutcracker two years ago. Now, he has unsuccessfully auditioned for roles in Tootsie, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Rocky Horror Picture Show. In his theatrical “comeback,” Mr. Hafner is excited to share the stage with his daughter Cally, and looks forward to seeing Ruby and Ava perform. Mr. Hafner is a communications professional who serves on Stapleton School’s Board of Directors. Lucas Pitts (Russian Scene) was born and raised in Portland Oregon. He has studied ballet at Oregon Ballet Theatre and The Portland Ballet. Lucas is currently a freshman at the Alonzo King LINES Ballet BFA at Dominican University of California.

Guest Performers Kirsten Polsky (Party Scene Parent) makes her Stapleton Nutcracker debut this year. She is happy to share the experience with her daughter Alexa, a party girl, and younger daughter Maddie, Buffoon. Kirsten was a student at The San Francisco Ballet during her childhood, and danced in the SF Nutcracker. Brian Reed (Party Scene Parent) danced the pas de trois at home for years with his ballerina daughters. Now, Brian is delighted to be in this year’s party scene, his 6th Nutcracker, with Caitlyn (Snow Trio, Snow corps de ballet & Spanish Lead). A San Francisco native and long-time San Anselmo resident, Brian enjoys family fun, technology consulting, cooking for friends, mountain biking, scuba diving, snowboarding, and studying guitar. Juan Luis Ruiz (Nephew/Nutcracker Prince) began his dance training three years ago at Ruth Asawa School of the Arts (RASOTA) in San Francisco. After graduating from RASOTA, Juan joined the ODC Dance Jam troupe for a year and performed works from Bay Area choreographers under the guidance of K.T. Nelson and Kimi Okada. Juan is currently a sophomore at Alonzo King LINES BFA program at Dominican University, and is constantly studying the body’s ability to move though time and space. This is his first time performing in the Stapleton Ballet Nutcracker, and he aspires to become a professional dancer after he graduates from Dominican University. Ethan Teng (Arabian Soloist) grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Stanford University. He started dancing after college, first studying jazz and tap at Dance Arts Center with Berle Davis. He then went on to receive his ballet training at Oakland Ballet Academy with Ronn Guidi, and now at Academy of Ballet with Zory Karah. Ethan’s performed with a variety of ballet and theater companies, including Oakland Ballet, Broadway by the Bay, Lamplighters, and Ray of Light Theatre. He’s also on the board of Human Shakes, a contemporary dance company in San Francisco. He’s thrilled to be performing in his first Stapleton Nutcracker!

Chris Thoennes (Mother Ginger) got his start with the Stapleton Ballet by playing the Mouse King in early versions of The Nutcracker. In 1997, he turned in his whiskers for a hoop skirt and began performing the role of Mother Ginger. After a hiatus of several years, Chris returned last year and is thrilled to be wearing this fantabulous wig and dress! He is the proud father of two teenagers, Liam and Zoe. Rob Vallas (Mr. Stahlbaum) is excited to be back for his fourth Nutcracker. His two lovely daughters, Phoebe and Callia, are dancing together in their eighth Nutcracker as Spanish Corp and Mouse Queen Attendants. When he isn’t hanging out at Stapleton, Rob enjoys hiking, cycling, woodworking, and spending as much time as possible playing acoustic guitar. Chad Yarish (Drosselmeyer) is back for his 13th consecutive Nutcracker. Good lord. This past year, Chad was Owen Musser in The Foreigner with the Contra Costa Civic Theater (nominated for 7 TBA awards); Bruce in Beyond Therapy with Lucky Penny Productions (Napa): and himself in the workshop production of the latest play from the writers of The Reduced Shakespeare Company: William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play (Abridged) - which was performed both for Shakespeare Napa Valley and the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival. Chad is a known pirate and does all his own beard stunts. Find out more online: chad-yarish.squarespace.com
