Dear WAM Family, In 2003, I founded Women’s Audio Mission as a way to respond to a question that I didn’t know how to answer: Why are there so incredibly few women recording engineers? Or any women engineers for that matter? As an electrical engineer, I had become so accustomed to a male-dominated environment that I was blind to the issue of gender equity in the sector. Yet, once I became a professor of the recording arts, working with young people, I was really troubled by the imbalance I found among my students. I wanted to understand why I was one of the few women in this world of technology. What I realized is that being surrounded by technology during my childhood, in my engineer father’s research lab, is what made me comfortable and fluent in this world. I dreamed of what the world would look like if all girls had access to the technology, non-traditional training, and support that I had. Now, 15 years later, WAM has grown into multiple world-class training and recording environments that inspire over 1,500 underserved women and girls every year to use technology to tell their stories, change the narrative in the soundtrack of our lives and become the innovators of tomorrow. What started as a simple question has led to a unique solution that is truly “changing the face of sound.” I am so happy you are here to celebrate our legacy of training over 14,000 underserved women and girls to date. Funds raised tonight will support our new location in Oakland and the expansion of our programs across both Oakland and San Francisco Unified School Districts. Our goal is to reach over 3,000 Bay Area girls every year by 2020. The rise of movements like #MeToo show us why WAM’s work is more important than ever. We need more women and girls in leadership, creating the messages that we hear every day. Every contribution you make this evening helps us reach the most vulnerable populations of women and girls, giving them the powerful creative technology skills they need to ensure their voices are heard loud and clear. Deepest gratitude,

Terri Winston Executive Director

ARTIST BIOS

St. Beauty St. Beauty is the soulful love-child of Alex Belle and Isis V. Both born and raised in Atlanta — a rarity in the ‘Melting Pot of the South’— Alex and Isis met in College Park while working at Poor Little Rich Girl, a vintage store, and it’s there that they discovered a shared passion for songwriting and performing. This is where St. Beauty was born, performing together for the first time at a showcase in the store’s basement, uniting Alex’s melodic sensibilities with Isis’ nimble guitar skills. Layering honey-drenched melodies that linger with truthful lyrics that explore the emotional depths of life and love, their songs deliver a richness and raw expression that is unparalleled. Isis, a member of the Wondaland Arts Society and former dancer and background singer for Janelle Monáe, shared the stage with the artist again in 2018, as St. Beauty opened for Monáe’s “Dirty Computer” tour.

Diana Gameros Diana Gameros is a singer, songwriter, music instructor and social activist. Originally from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, Gameros has resided in the United States since age 13, and for much of that time was an undocumented immigrant. Now with legal status, Gameros wrote a love letter to her homeland with 13 standout renditions of classic Mexican songs on her latest album, Arrullo. Arrullo was recorded at Women’s Audio Mission and selected as a top 10 album by NPR’s Alt. Latino. Her music reflects the 21st century experiences of a young indie artist at the borderlands between cultures, languages, and genres. Gameros has quickly caught the attention of national media as well as acclaimed musicians (i.e., La Santa Cecilia, Natalia Lafourcade, Bebel Gilberto, Taylor Mac). Diana’s songs and stor y have been featured on Billboard, Mother Jones, NPR’s All Songs Considered, NPR’s Alt. Latino, Public Radio International – The World and PBS Newshour.
