ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN INTERIOR DESIGN AWARDS FOR 2022

Roche Bobois Furniture Design Competition 2022

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Design a luminaire, with a new source of light.

Sustainable materials must be given priority, and upcycling can offer an opportunity to develop new craftsmanship techniques in collaboration with local craftspeople.

The narrative function was equally important for a lighting object as for any other design object, and the “Holy Grail” lies in the perfect balance of beauty and efficiency in a single piece of design: the light not only needed to foster visibility, but also needed to create a story and occupies our space for the pleasure of both the eye and the spirit.

A prestigious design jury was invited to the Roche Bobois Design Awards:

Ms Charrisse Johnston IID African Institute of the Interior Design Professions

Global Graduation Show / Prototypes for Humanity – Dubai November 2022

Prototypes for Humanity is the most diverse assembly of innovations that have the power to change the world, with programmes and activities to raise awareness of global problems, celebrate solutions, and catalyse action for positive social and environmental impact. Prototypes for Humanity debuted in 2022 as an evolution from Global Grad Show, which launched in 2015.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The Integrated Sustainability Awareness System (S.A.S) - [alumni category]

What it is: A scalable online platform for collecting information relating to a household's consumption of energy and resources.

What it does: Information is collected through a smartphone application, which feeds into an online database. The information is analysed to generate understandable statistics that are freely available on the website. Anyone can access the statistics to track the impact of the system and to see how different areas measure up to one another.

Through encouraged regular interaction and a gamified or reward element to the user experience, consumers will learn how to make changes in their daily lives, making informed choices to enable them to have a reduced impact on the planet.

The problem it solves: The system aims to educate people around what their energy consumption means, whether it is good, bad, or maybe just okay. Through suggestions and a directory of places to make use of, S.A.S. hopes to passively change user behaviour to go towards creating a more aware and efficient society.

By forming a database of previously unrecorded information, the idea is to provide an administrative body and the public with valuable information around energy use statistics. Briefly, anyone will be able to determine which areas are using the most energy, and which are saving where they can. It will be easier to determine which areas perhaps are not recycling enough, indicating that a recycling programme may be necessary in the area. It will also be possible to see which areas are the least educated around topics of energy efficiency and sustainability, indicating a need for programmes to rectify this.

2nd Edition of the BLT Built Design Awards – International

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Oasis Medicare Clinic

Prize: Jury's Favorite in Interior Design - Institutional

The primary care clinic focuses on wellness visits, physicals, vaccinations, screenings for illness, and acute illness and/or injury care for all patients With a strong focus on an inclusive design we ensured specialized kitted examination rooms for pediatric, bariatric, disabled, elderly and the general patient The flexible special design allows for growth in the clinic We aimed to be environmentally conscious and reuse or refurbish the existing walls instead of demolishing and rebuilding.

The spatial design concept was initiated with the idea to maximize usable space without sacrificing the already gloomy hallway. Together with the additional waiting area and pause seating, it not only create a more assessable space but shortens the long hallway. The Frosted glass doors to examination rooms allow natural light into the hallway All materials in the clinic are high quality durable and easy to clean Most of the furniture and equipment is sourced from local South African suppliers/manufacturers. This allows the clinic to have a spa like feel creating a sense of comfort and well being for all patients.

‘KLOK’

Winner: Winners in Floor Lamp – ‘KLOK’

Klok’s timeless design explores a whole new concept the freestanding clock light. The Klok displays the functionality of a clock and aesthetics of ambient light. Over 80 % of Klok is made from aluminum. Aluminum is 100% recycle bale. Re cyclable materials were used throughout, and energy saving flexi LED lights strip were chosen as the light source.

‘LESEDI’

Honourable Mention: A light to assist with Seasonal Affected Disorder, to improve the user’s well-being.

LESEDI Lamp is a new source of artificial light that has been brought to interiors, to improve the quality of life, both in terms of functionality and aesthetics. It uses an LED light source to provide a variety of settings for people suffering from seasonal affective disorder (SAD). The way the colours change within the light source is coordinated with the body’s circadian rhythm. The change in light colour is set to mimic a 12 hour day cycle, or it can be set manually as per the user preference. In the morning, the light source casts a cool blue light to stimulate wakefulness. In the evening, it shines a warm amber, resulting in increased melatonin production to aid with sleep. LESEDI Lamp is an abstract celebration of African cultures , with the functionality, look and feel of modern materials and technologies. The basic form inspired by organic lines and forms of traditional African patterns across multiple cultures.
