Congratulations to the class of 2020! The road to this day has not been easy, especially over the past few months. For that, I say well done on staying the course and rising up to the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic.
We wanted to acknowledge your many years of sacrifice and hard work, and thought creatively about how to present this graduation ceremony in the most inclusive and unique way. That is why, instead of a mass conferral of qualifications, we opted for a more personalised version of a virtual graduation. Graduations are one of our largest and most significant events at CPUT, because celebrating your success is as important as celebrating our own. While I will miss not being able to meet you all personally as you walk across the stage, I hope this event gives you as much fulfilment and joy as a faceto-face graduation would have.
BOODSKAP VAN DIE VISEKANSELIER
Geagte Gegradueerdes
Lewenslange leer plaas u ’n tree

Okokugqibela, esi sidanga kumele sibe yenye yeendlela zokuziphucula. Ukuthi gqolo ukufunda oku kuza kukugcina
Finally, this qualification should be just one of many investments you make in yourself. Lifelong learning will keep you a step ahead of the pack, and capable of adapting to a constantly changing world. As a graduate of CPUT, you join a vast network of successful individuals who want to see you, and the Institution, flourish. I hope that as you rise through your own industry ranks, that you will also open the doors of opportunity to others when they knock.
Thank you.

TITLE: SYNTHESIS AND BIOACTIVITY EVALUATION OF SELECTED PENTACYCLIC TRITERPENOID HYBRID-CONJUGATE DERIVATIVES
This study examined the synthesis and bioactivities of conjugate-hybrid combinations of selected pentacyclic triterpenoid scaffolds. The study focused on the functionalisation of naturally occurring moieties and the limitations of synthesizing large hybrid compounds, and the significance of structure-activity relationship in rapid bioactive compounds development. The main contribution of this study is the discovery of novel templates for potentially therapeutic agents more potent against multi-drug resistant microbial strains relative to reference standard antibiotics. The synthesis and screening of nature-mimicked conjugate-hybrids therefore presented novel bioactive derivatives that are reported for the first time, which may have applications in the development of new drug leads.

The candidate developed a systemic Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework for planning and implementing Industrial Development Zones (IDZs) to improve socioeconomic development in a metropolitan municipality in South Africa.
The literature suggests that PPP arrangements are important alternative options for social development, local economic development and rural economic development in a municipal environment. The study identified IDZs as a distinctive platform for effective and efficient PPP procurement arrangements to stimulate local economic vibrancy and sustainable development. The findings revealed that the metropolitan municipality benefited from the IDZ-PPP arrangement. It is recommended National Treasury develop a PPP risk-based management framework that directly aligns with PPP arrangement, monitoring and evaluation in order to measure the extent of PPP

TITLE: IMPACT OF INTERNAL AUDIT AND CORPORATE GOVERNANCE PRACTICES ON THE PERFORMANCE OF STATE-OWNED ENTERPRISES IN NAMIBIA
Mr Boamah developed a framework that captures internal audit activities, corporate governance and risk performance of state-owned enterprises (SOEs). In analysing internal auditing within Namibian SOEs, the study advances our understanding of the intricacies of public sector internal auditing.
Internal auditing (IA) in SOEs is critical for corporate governance (CG), risk management, operational efficiency and assurance to enhance organisational performance. Notwithstanding the existence of legislation, regulations and codes of governance, misappropriation, fraudulent activities, non-compliance and inefficiencies abound in SOEs, contributing to dysfunctional operations. The study found that SOEs malfunction because of absence of effective IA and poor CG practices. Research and stakeholders reiterate the importance of good CG. It is essential that SOEs adopt frameworks that enhance their overall performance. Consequently, an IA effectiveness framework capturing CG practices for SOEs is proposed to enhance performance and mitigate risk.
TITLE: A FRAMEWORK FOR HOLISTIC RISK MANAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY OF FAST-MOVING CONSUMER GOODS SMES: CAPE METROPOLE, SOUTH AFRICA
Oscar Chakabva developed a holistic risk assessment framework for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) SMEs, to introduce a broader perspective on the risks that are crucial for the survival of FMCG SMEs in a fast-paced changing environment.
Studies have shown that FMCG SMEs face an array of risks in their operations. Customarily, SMEs are tempted to align these risks to strategic, operations, and compliance issues. While this has been the practice, this study through the sustainability lens, found that risks in FMCG SMEs are no longer confined to traditional sources only, but are now pervasively expanding. While the latter outcome reiterates the critical importance for risk assessment, the clarion call is for FMCG SMEs to adopt a holistic approach to the assessment and management of risks. To this end, a framework that captures sustainability dimensions into the risk assessment of FMCG

TITLE: THE IMPACT OF CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY PROGRAMMES ON THE MARKETING PERFORMANCE OF PROFESSIONAL SPORT ORGANISATIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA
The candidate developed a set of criteria professional sport organisations in South Africa could use to assess the impact of CSR programmes on their marketing performance.
The literature suggests CSR programmes elicit positive marketing-related outcomes for professional sport organisations. However, the impact of these outcomes on marketing performance is under-investigated. This study identified CSR as a marketing strategy and conceptualised the relationship between CSR and marketing performance. The findings present unique perceptions from professional sport organisations in South Africa. A set of criteria to assess the impact of CSR programmes on their marketing performance is proposed. It is recommended that CSR be used strategically to maximise positive impact on sport organisations’ marketing performance.

The study explores how a residential care centre socially and educationally include children and youth at risk through the integration of its teaching approaches, culture and practices.
The research studied a residential care centre for children and youth at risk in the Western Cape to explore the connections between the backgrounds of the children and youths, the culture and practices of the residential centre, and the teaching approaches adopted within the centre to socially and educationally include learners under their charge. The findings reveal that the child and youth care centre promotes social inclusion through embedding its culture of a ‘Circle of Courage’ in its teaching approaches. The study recommends that other child and youth care centres develop a holistic approach to education, which integrates academic achievement with school cultures that are socially inclusive.

This study highlights how learners’ and teachers’ understanding and experiences of citizenship in South African high schools in urban and rural contexts are still impacted by the legacies of apartheid and colonialism.
This study explored learners’ and teachers’ understandings and experiences of citizenship in and through education in South Africa. This study is important because few studies have investigated understandings of citizenship in high schools, particularly in urban as well as rural contexts. The study contributes to knowledge about how class and race impact understandings of citizenship in schools in South Africa. The study throws into sharp relief the gap between policies about citizenship and how the policies are realised in practice in and through education. The study concludes that schools in South Africa remain highly unequal spaces and that there is a long road to travel to

TITLE: BODY FAT DISTRIBUTION AND CARDIO-METABOLIC RISK FACTORS IN SOUTH AFRICAN MEN AND WOMEN
Estimates of adiposity and diabetes prevalence in South Africa are higher than the global average. Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) accumulation is a known risk factor for cardiometabolic disease. This study sought to validate dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) as a method of quantifying central adiposity, explore the relationship between body fat distribution and cardio-metabolic risk, and determine the ability of DEXA compared to anthropometry to identify participants with metabolic syndrome (MetS).
Our findings suggest that DEXA is a valid measure of central adiposity, particularly in obese people. DEXA showed that central fat was the most significant correlate of cardiometabolic risk, and lower body fat was associated with reduced risk. DEXA-derived VAT had no advantage in discriminating MetS than waist circumference (WC), thus WC can be used as a marker of MetS provided population specific cut-offs are derived.
