SENTINEL ORGANISMS TO EVALUATE THE HEALTH OF METAL CONTAMINATED FOREST ECOSYSTEMS IN THE WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA
Persistent exposure to metal pollution can cause severe damage to ecosystems. The main objective of this study was to determine the health of suspected metalcontaminated forests on the Table Mountain range. Three afromontane forests were studied. Metal concentrations were measured in soil, leaf litter, moss, lichen and millipedes. Oxidative stress analyses were done to determine the levels of toxic stress. Significantly elevated metal concentrations were found during the winter sampling in the forest located closest to the Cape Town CBD. The oxidative stress analyses indicated that metal-induced toxic stress was more pronounced in winter, during the time when the “brown haze” (an air pollution phenomenon) is more prevalent. A pollution monitoring programme in afromontane forests is suggested in order to protect these ecosystems from environmental pollution impacts.

TITLE: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH STATUS, THE ATTRIBUTES OF FEMALE CAREGIVERS, AND THE HEALTH STATUS OF CARE RECIPIENTS IN LOW-INCOME
AREAS IN CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA
Yakubu holds a MA from the University of Ghana and MSc from the University of the Western Cape. His doctoral thesis looked into caregiver burden in two low-income communities in Cape Town, with comparative data from Ghana. The research produced a new theoretical model to assess levels of caregiving burden among informal caregivers. These form the bulk of caregiving in all communities, though not officially recognised by the formal health system for training and financial compensation. The thesis postulates that a system should be put in place to recognise the contribution that these caregivers make to the burden associated with social welfare in all societies.

TITLE: REPRESENTATION OF OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENE DATA BY WAY OF A GEOSPATIAL INFORMATION SYSTEM: INFLUENCE ON OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENE KNOWLEDGE
Hendrik holds a MSc from the University of Greenwich in London. His doctoral thesis investigated the representation of occupational hygiene (OH) data by way of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in multinational companies based in Belgium and South Africa. The research produced a unique, GIS based model for the management of occupational hygiene data that could be applied to industrial plants in both countries, and added value to the knowledge within the companies. The model provides a possible solution to the virtual management of OH data in the industrial plants of multinational companies, from a single office.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus has become a global health problem, affecting millions of people in developed and developing countries. The study was designed to investigate the effects of vindoline, a bioactive compound derived from a medicinal plant –Catharanthus roseus against type 2 diabetes and its complications in an animal model. Vindoline demonstrated protective effects against diabetes-induced hepatic, cardiac, pancreatic and kidney injuries. Also, vindoline improved insulin secretion in both in vitro and in vivo setups, suggesting that vindoline could play a role in the treatment and management of diabetes mellitus.

The aim of this project was to establish common reference intervals (RIs) for a panel of 40 analytes, taking into consideration gender, age, ethnicity and body mass index (BMI) as sources of variations (SVs). This project formed part of a global project coordinated by the Committee of Reference Intervals and Decision Limits (C – RIDL) and International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) in establishing RIs, and was the first study of its kind in South Africa, whereby the results obtained were compared to the global study. Some unique results for the South African population were identified across gender-, ethnic- and age groups, that was not seen in the global study.

MZUKISI NGXONGXELA
Diploma: Mathematical Sciences
Born in Mount Fletcher, Eastern Cape, Mzukisi Ngxongxela moved to Cape Town as a child and matriculated at Iqhayiya Senior Secondary School in Khayelitsha in 2013. He faced academic and financial difficulties in his first tertiary course and it felt like ‘the end of the world,’ but Ngxongxela was determined to set an example of success for his young daughter and cousin.
In 2017, he enrolled in the brand new Diploma in Mathematical Sciences at CPUT, and quickly found that studying Mathematics was his passion. He achieved distinctions in 24 of his 28 subjects, and an overall average of 84%. Ngxongxela did his Work Integrated Learning at Eighty 20, a data analytics consultancy based in Woodstock. He is still considering his options for next year, but is keen to continue his studies. He is grateful for the support he has received from his family and his lecturers.
