The building has now become more than just a building of books: it caters for the visually impaired, has a local city help desk, state-of-the-art People’s Network IT suite, cafe, reading and seating areas.

The library has now become more than just a building of books – it provides a number of excellent services for the local community. Information Technology now plays an important part of what Southsea Library has to offer, boasting a state-ofthe-art People’s Network IT suite with numerous computer bays. Accessibility has been improved, particularly for the visually impaired, with lifts to all floors, a high-dependency changing room and well-appointed toilets that meet DDA regulations. For people that wish to relax, there’s a well-stocked café and the introduction of extensive reading and seating areas designed to soak sound. These items are just a small number of the facilities that this 21st century library now has to offer. At noon on the 1st August 2011, the library was opened to the general public by international bestselling author Kate Mosse, as a brass band marked the occasion. Within an hour a hundred people joined to show their support. The layout of the building was well received as the wide open spaces enable it to be childfriendly. Within minutes of the plaque being unveiled, children were sat down reading books and enjoying the new facility which Brymor helped Portsmouth City Council to achieve. Brymor’s healthcare division has been growing from strength to strength over recent years and when the opportunity was presented to our team to tender for the works within the Endoscopy Department at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford, we jumped at the chance to extend our expertise and healthcare portfolio.
Brymor strengthens team with new members of staff
T
his particular scheme encompasses the construction of a new Endoscopy Unit sited on the 1st floor roof directly above the hospital main entrance. With the project’s location being in close proximity to the general public, health and safety control has been paramount to ensure the project runs smoothly and with minimal disruption to the everyday running of the hospital. The new department is a steel frame structure with single ply roof covering; external walls are insulated render and standing seam metal cladding. The works will also include the construction of a new twin lift and extension of an existing staircase.
• Stephen Evans Project Manager Internally, metal stud partitions, suspended ceilings, vinyl floor coverings and various fixtures and furnishings will be inserted.The building services within the new facility consist of hot and cold water installation, heating, mechanical ventilation, above ground drainage, power distribution, lighting, telecoms, fire alarms, nurse call, medical gases, IT wireways, autoscope installation (ENI) and security installations. The overall project duration for this challenging scheme is 40 weeks. Completed Project: New Yellow Dot Nursery, Chilworth Science Park, Southampton £1m Brymor are pleased to have recently completed another successful project within Southampton Science Park. This interesting project with great design features was undertaken for Yellow Dot Nursery. The project involved the construction of a new single storey day nursery valuing £1 million.

he front of the scheme is primarily cedar clad, with render highlighting the entrance. Brick is used on elevations facing onto play spaces which are prone to wear and tear. Classroom windows are at varying heights, providing views at all eye levels and, adjacent to the entrance, the window surround forms a low bench. As well as the above aspects to the scheme there were many eco improvements tailored into the scope of works including: • Air source heat pump feeding the
underfloor heating and to supplement the hot water system for the building. • Movement sensors to all lighting to save energy. • Bat boxes. External hard surfaces of asphalt and block paving have all been constructed with porous materials to allow surface water to drain back into the ground without the use of traditional soakaways. To round off the success of this project the innovative Yellow Dot Nursery has earned

IT’S A FACT The Minister for the Cabinet Office, Francis Maude, speaking at the Construction Procurement Conference, has announced £22 billion of investment in Government construction projects over the next three years, confounding expectations that construction funding would be slashed.
Nicholas Sherwood from TKL Architects a place in the running to attain the Royal Institute of British Architect’s (RIBA) Downland Prize. The award is handed out each year for projects in the south and south east regions that cost less than £1.5m. Yellow Dot is one of 19 projects to have been shortlisted for the prize from 70 entries. The winner will be announced in the autumn. Brymor would like to congratulate TKL Architects on a great design.

Brymor’s Annual Golf Day 2011 On Thursday 15th September a selection of over 25 construction professionals enjoyed a funpacked day of golf.
T
his annual event once again took place at the Marriott Meon Valley Hotel and Country Club, Southampton and saw representatives from Studio Four Architects, SEC, Henderson Green, Gleeds and Allen Holmes Associates to name but a few. The competition was carried out over a 9-hole Stableford competition in the morning, followed by an 18-hole Texas Scramble in the afternoon. In addition, the competitors were split into teams of Europe and USA, taking part in a Ryder Cup-style competition which became very competitive! The overall winner for the Stableford Competition was our very own Gary Edmonds (Project Manager), who scored 20 points. However Nigel Smith (Smith Foster) was a very close runner-up who also scored 20 points and only lost on count back. After lunch was where not only our Brymor hosts showed their competitive streak, but also our clients, as all teams were playing to win in the Texas Scramble. Each team kept their cards very close to their chests throughout the 18 holes of golf, and after sweat and tears from all involved the champions were David Perry’s team consisting of; David Perry (Brymor) David Greetham (Gleeds) and Nigel Smith (Smith Foster) who sailed home to victory with a score of 59.4 points.

However all the emphasis was on whether Europe or USA had won the overall Ryder Cup competition. It was very close right up to the last shot, but the overall winners were the USA, 8 points to 7! Brymor have been holding this particular event for numerous
years and it was still as popular as ever. Stephen Morton CEO said, “We are extremely pleased that once again so many of our most valued and important clients were able to join us, some of whom have been attending for over five years. It is always good fun and has an extremely relaxed
atmosphere, and although the golf is sometimes not ‘up to par’ the company is always fantastic. I hope we can continue the working relationships which have been created over the years and we thank all our customers for their continued support in these difficult times”.

Training remains high on the agenda
O
n 20th September 2011 various staff members took part in a Tower Crane Rescue training course which was carried on our site at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford. The training was given by IKAR GB. The morning consisted of harness and associated equipment training and then all involved took part in an afternoon of rescue training, which included going up the crane and lowering a dummy using the controlled descent device. The tower crane was 25m from the ground and had a 60m jib. Everyone passed with flying colours and a rescue plan has now been developed and implemented on site.

rymor are extremely pleased to have secured a £3.4 Million contract to create Pall Europe’s new UK offices. This fast-track commercial scheme started on 24th October 2011 and involves the complete fit-out of the existing 6 storey No.5 Harbourgate building in Portsmouth. The works include new glazed walls, solid partitions, doors and ironmongery, heating system, cooling system, redecoration throughout, passenger lift servicing, new external signs on 5th floor accessed via a cradle, upgrades of transformers and substation, installation of a new data centre (room within room), new lighting and finally the installation of new furniture throughout to accommodate 500+ people. This project is due to complete in April 2012 when Pall Europe will relocate from their current offices in Portsmouth.
Charity Work Continues

rymor recently donated two Corporate Portsmouth Football Club tickets to a charity golf day raffle which was organised to support Hannah’s Holiday Homes Charity. After a heated bidding war the tickets were finally sold for £150. The event raised a very respectable £2,200 for the charity. Congratulations to everyone who attended and took part to raise money for this worthy cause. ean Kelly, Brymor Site Manager, is currently working on an education project at Wavell School for Hampshire County Council and has been commended by Mike Lennard, our client, for his proactive approach to the hub site setup. Hampshire County Council have now taken
the decision to adopt this approach to hub site set-up on all schemes and it will be the standard requirement for all future projects. This is a huge compliment to Dean’s hard work and commitment to HCC projects and we would like to congratulate him on a job well done.

The new Vocational Centre at Tomlinscote School, Frimley, is the latest in a long history of successful education projects completed by Brymor.
Royal Opening of New Vocational Centre
T
he completed building is an exciting and architecturally interesting scheme comprising of a three-storey, steel-framed vocational centre for training teenagers in life-long skills such as construction, hair and beauty, childcare, catering, sports and landscaping. These skills are part of the Government’s initiative to combat youth unemployment with the intention of giving school-leavers, such as those from Tomlinscote School, the opportunity for appropriate education in preparation for

future career development. To highlight the importance and the benefits that this new facility will bring to the local community, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent was in attendance to officially open the Vocational Centre on 20th October 2011. There were many challenging and interesting aspects to this scheme including a glazed feature atrium and a twostorey theatre. Working within the confines of a working school, construction and site deliveries had to be managed to accommodate school activities and the congestion of the daily school run. The programme was also particularly demanding and at one stage there were circa 135 men on site. All of these factors were managed and controlled through successful communications between the whole project team. We would like to thank all involved including our approved subcontractors and suppliers for their hard work throughout the duration of the scheme, all of whom helped to make this project a success for all involved.
