Collaborations

About Us Based in Jaipur, India our roots are tied to the multitude of art and design this city harbours. Working extensively with Recycled Paper and Natural Fiber Textile, we organically connect these endeavors with traditional Indian craftsmanship.

Since our founding in 2015, Craft Boat has made an intentional effort to embrace all things handmade, sustainable, and analog. Collaborating with artisan businesses from all around the world, we hope to make space for kinder choices to exist and flourish, creating a sense of harmony and flexibility that radiates well beyond our studio walls.

03 | ABOUT US

Our Pillars Every day as we try to take small, thoughtful, steps, in our journey we hold our community, craftsmanship, and the Earth close. Staying grounded in how we design allows us to make special hand crafted products in small batches for you.

Here are our core pillars that reflect what we truly value.

Craft & Community

At heart of Craft Boat there is a fundamental understanding of the core behaviour of Indian craft techniques and the interactions between people, ideas, craft and material.

Our community is what holds us afloat our boat. We try to make choices to nurture connections and foster a community of like-minded individuals who come together to celebrate crafts and makers from across India.

08 | OUR PILLARS

Circularity

In our studio, there is always an organic discussion about how to reuse materials and reduce the amount of waste when designing any product. By introducing new craft techniques we have been able to close the loop and reimagine waste through a shift of form.

Read more about how we close the loop here.

10 | OUR PILLARS

Analog

Over the years, we have tried to design timeless pieces which radiate thoughtfulness. Following the traditions of product utility and primitive design techniques, we want the generations after us to use and cherish the objects we make.

12 | OUR PILLARS

Flow

Continuously experimenting with form and function, open to introducing new craft techniques, and always connecting the dots with like-minded brands - this is how we have stayed fluid in our design process.

in Sanganer, Jaipur - as we grow and foster a greater community of artisans who are celebrated for their craftsmanship, our seed sprouts and we continue to cultivate our dreams. In this same year, we set up our internal woodwork set up, excited as we ushered in a different material

Our Community With over 25 artisans, 5 designers, and our production team we have fostered a family that has been able to nurture our seed from the beginning At the same time, we hired around 10 women from our studio’s neighbourhood, this was the first time most of these women have worked in their lives and we welcomed them to grow with us at our studio

Process & Materials Material and process interact with craft technique to produce seamless objects of beauty with elegance and utility.

For us, within process and materiality most of our creativity and regenerative design process can be honed. Here, we expand our craft techniques and the skills to ensure the production is circular and regenerative.

17 | PROCESS & MATERIALS

Handmade Paper Making The traditional practice of handmade paper making ushers a shift of form. From paper pulp to paper sheets the process is carefully handled by the hands of artisans. Our journey with handmade paper making started in 2015, since then we have made over 500,000 sheets of paper

Natural Dyeing The art of extracting pigments from naturally found materials & using it as a dye to stain paper and fabric. This whole process is slow and organic and each product is filled with character. Since 2017, we have dyed over 150,000 paper sheets and 15, 000 metres of natural textiles

Wood Block Printing An intricate craft practiced prominently in the Sanganer town of Jaipur, India. Our block printed papers are produced in small batches and holds a beautiful story from hands of the maker. We have done woodblock printing since 2016, and since then we have block printed over 25,000 paper sheets and over 5, 000 metres of fabric.

Hand Marbling It’s a unique art of creating beautiful abstract flow of lines and colors on a tray of water with oil paints. These patterns are then transferred on a sheet of handmade paper. Hand marbling was introduced to us in 2016, and we have not let it go, since then we have hand marbled over 150, 000 sheets of handmade paper for client and in-house designs.

Machine Sewing As we try to expand in small steps, sewing machinery has been an integral part of our work - from making canvas bags, textile covered objects, and a range of custom designs. Since 2020, we have included sewing machinery in our inventory and since then we have stitched over 30,000 canvas bags and over 5,000 meters of fabric

Woodwork A budding set of skills at Craft Boat, woodworking has been used to creative a plenthora of products such as utensils, chopping boards, bowls of different sizes, and other custom designs. Since 2021, we have experience in making home and kitchen goods as well as products from the waste - such as natural dye extract from the saw dust.

Hand Screen Printing An art of making designs on paper using light sensitive mesh screens. The designs are first transfered on screens then printed on sheets with hand, one at a time. We have been doing screen printing since 2016, and we have printed on over 75, 000 sheets of handmade paper.

Hand Stitching A fresh extension at Craft Boat workshop to create a range of cotton canvas accessories like tote bags, utility pouches and custom shopping bags along with hand stitched paper goods. Since 2020, we have introduced hand stitching and we have embroidered on a handful of custom designs and for our own collection.

Closing the Loop Using waste materials was a very organic approach to our design process from the beginning. This circular approach makes us adaptable and fluid to changes in design and technique as new materials are generated as waste. With every production we aim to close the loop and minimise waste generation by imagining shift of form.

With our process and material choices we develop responsible everyday objects that reflect innate joy and originality.

23 | CLOSING THE LOOP

Papermaking Scrapped pre-consumer cotton textile waste is transformed into beautiful and intricate handmade paper

Natural Dyeing from Wood Shavings 90% of our productions are done in Acacia wood and the shavings are used to extract the natural dye; a deep beige tone Here is a link to our process

Pieced Woodwork Last bits of wood waste is collected and joined together to make fresh slabs for further product making

Collaborations At Craft Boat, our intention has always been to collaborate with brands and come up with curated, custom designs.

In working together we are able to develop our craft techniques, find ways to close the loop, and work with like-minded brands and people to celebrate craftsmanship beyond our studio walls.
