The Cork C r a f t s m e n ' s G u i l d has a l r e a d y s e t a l e a d i n c o o p e r a t i v e r e t a i l s e l l i n g and i t i s i n t e r e s t i n g to note t h a t t h e y a r e now b r o a d e n i n g the scope of t h e i r s u c c e s s f u l v e n t u r e . Frank Sutton sends the f o l l o w i n g r e p o r t on the o p e n i n g of the new G u i l d G a l l e r y i n Cork :The new G u i l d G a l l e r y , an e x t e n s i o n t o the Cork C r a f t s m e n ' s G u i l d shop i n Cork, was r e c e n t l y opened by Colm O B r i a i n , D i r e c t o r of the A r t s C o u n c i l . r
Work by s i x Cork c r a f t s m e n / a r t i s t s were shown, m a i n l y d r a w i n g s and w a t e r c o l o u r s . The a r t i s t s were : John V e r l i n g , P a t Connor, F l o y d P l a c e k , B r i a n L a l o r , M a u r i c e Hendersen and R o b i n F o m e s t e r . I t i s the i n t e n t i o n o f the G u i l d , w h i c h i s a c o o p e r a t i v e , t o m a i n t a i n the c r a f t l i n k w i t h the main shop by c o n c e n t r a t i n g on g r a p h i c work. T h i s i n t e n t i o n was u n d e r l i n e d by Colm O ' B r i a i n i n h i s opening s p e e c h i n w h i c h he commended t o a r t i s t s and c r a f t s m e n the i d e a of c o o p e r a t i v e s and t h e i r v a l u e i n terms of group m a r k e t i n g f o r t h o s e o f t e n dependent f o r p u b l i c showing on the major g a l l e r i e s . Here i s how he describes i t : The B u r r e n D i s p l a y C e n t r e i n K i l f e n o r a v i l l a g e i s an e f f o r t t o c r e a t e a B u r r e n - i n - m i n i a t u r e and, by so d o i n g , t o i n c r e a s e a w a r e n e s s through d e e p e n i n g u n d e r s t a n d i n g . Through the r e - c r e a t i o n of a w a r e n e s s o f t h e B u r r e n once more and o f a d i r e c t l i n k between the town and i t s h i n t e r l a n d i t i s hoped t o c o n t r i b u t e towards the r e v i t a l i s a t i o n o f the town. One i n s t a n c e o f the type o f development e n v i s a g e d or e m a n a t i n g from t h i s a w a r e n e s s i s the B u r r e n perfumery s i t u a t e d i n C a r r o n v i l l a g e f i v e m i l e s from K i l f e n o r a w h i c h i s i n d i g e n o u s i n t h a t i t has grown out o f the e n v i r o n m e n t and aims a t c r e a t i n g a work atmosphere i n k e e p i n g w i t h i t - The p e r f u m e r y has most o f t h e c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s o f a s m a l l i n d u s t r y w i t h a c e n t r a l work a r e a . F l a n a g a n who was the r e c e i p i e n t o f the C a l i f o r n i a n Gold Medal i n l a s t y e a r ' s RDS C r a f t C o m p e t i t i o n f o r l a c e - m a k i n g and who f e a t u r e d a g a i n among t h i s y e a r ' s p r i z e w i n n e r s has been t e a c h i n g l a c e work f o r t h e l a s t s e v e n y e a r s . REGIONAL MEETINGS F o l l o w i n g the s t a t e d p o l i c y of the E x e c u t i v e o f the C r a f t s C o u n c i l of I r e l a n d t o v i s i t as many r e g i o n s as p o s s i b l e - ( r e m e m b e r t h a t the e x e c u t i v e i s a v o l u n t a r y body and members have j o b s w h i c h o r d i n a r i l y keep them more t h a n b u s y and who f i t C r a f t s C o u n c i l work i n t o t h e i r few s p a r e h o u r s ) - the May m e e t i n g was h e l d i n C l a r e , the June i n K e r r y and the J u l y i n D u b l i n ( i n o r d e r t o a l l o w the e x e c u t i v e meet w i t h the a d j u d i c a t o r s of the RDS N a t i o n a l C r a f t s C o m p e t i t i o n . CLARE A s t e e r i n g committee under t h e a u s p i c e s o f the l o c a l County Development O f f i c e r , Mr. K e v i n Vaughan had been s e t up t o check the f e a s i b i l i t y o f the f o r m a t i o n o f a C l a r e C r a f t s m e n s A s s o c i a t i o n The E x e c u t i v e Committee were i n v i t e d t o a t t e n d the m e e t i n g when the r e p o r t was made. An agreement, i n p r i n c i p a l was r e a c h e d to form an A s s o c i a t i o n and Mr. Tom Sheeny o f B u n r a t t y H a n d c r a f t s was a s k e d t o convene t h e n e x t m e e t i n g when o f f i c e r s o f the new a s s o c i a t i o n would be e l e c t e d . The A s s o c i a t i o n r e q u e s t e d a f f i l i a t i o n w i t h the C r a f t s C o u n c i l o f I r e l a n d . We hope to r e p o r t on f u r t h e r developments i n C l a r e i n a l a t e r e d i t i o n o f the N e w s l e t t e r .
KERRY The E x e c u t i v e o f the C r a f t s C o u n c i l t r a v e l l e d t o K i l l a r n e y i n June and met i n the e v e n i n g w i t h c r a f t w o r k e r s from Co. K e r r y . The m e e t i n g was a d d r e s s e d by the Chairman and v i c e Chairman o f the C I I , Mr. F r a n k S u t t o n and M i s s M u r i e l Gahan. Serious d i s c u s s i o n a t a p r a c t i c a l l e v e l e n s u e d and the c o n c e n s u s o f o p i n i o n was t h a t t h e r e was m e r i t i n the i d e a o f the f o r m a t i o n o f a c r a f t w o r k e r s group i n the c o u n t r y . I t was an i d e a l o c c a s i o n f o r s u c h a m e e t i n g as many o f t h o s e p r e s e n t were e x h i b i t i n g i n the R o y a l D u b l i n S o c i e t y ' s R e g i o n a l E x h i b i t i o n b e i n g h e l d t h a t week i n K i l l a r n e y . The v a r i e t y and s t a n d a r d o f the work produced i n the c o u n t y and s e e n under one r o o f , p r o b a b l y f o r the f i r s t time, was v e r y e x c i t i n g and h i g h l i g h t e d the need f o r some k i n d o f o r g a n i s a t i o n w h i c h would g i v e b o t h p r a c t i c a l a s s i s t a n c e and encouragement t o t h o s e w o r k i n g i n K e r r y . I t was a g r e e d t h e r e and then t o c a l l a n o t h e r m e e t i n g f o r the e x p r e s s purpose o f d i s c u s s i n g the f o r m a t i o n o f an a s s o c i a t i o n . We a r e p l e a s e d t o r e p o r t t h a t t h i s m e e t i n g d i d i n d e e d t a k e p l a c e and t h a t the KERRY CRAFT ASSOCIATION has been formed. The f o l l o w i n g r e p o r t by Susan B u t l e r , A r t s C o r r e s p o n d e n t , was p u b l i s h e d i n the K i l k e n n y P e o p l e . I t was c o n s i d e r e d by some t o be h a r s h b u t we f e e l t h a t the many v a l i d p o i n t s may a p p l y , not o n l y t o the s o u t h - e a s t b u t , t o a l l s e c t i o n s o f the c o u n t r y . The time has p a s s e d f o r mere encouragement of the c r a f t s t o be j u s t i f i e d - q u a l i t y , s t a n d a r d s and i n t e g r i t y must be u p h e l d and h e l p must be g i v e n where i t i s needed t o e n s u r e t h a t c r a f t 足 w o r k e r s have a c c e s s t o c o n s t r u c t i v e a d v i c e and c r i t i c i s m and, of c o u r s e , e d u c a t i o n and t r a i n i n g :" I f e e l v e r y s a d on (June '73 and June South E a s t can make d i s p l a y than e v e r .

R u d o l f H e l z e l ' s e x h i b i t , the N i e l s e n p o t t e r y , the woven wool p r o d u c t s of the Cushendale M i l l s a r e a l l e x c e l l e n t and as good a s e v e r . These a r t i s t i c c r a f t s m e n and s m a l l i n d u s t r i a l i s t s w i t h the s e n s e to use e x p e r t d e s i g n e r s , can h o l d t h e i r own anywhere i n t h e i r d i f f e r e n t d i s c i p l i n e s and on t h e i r d i f f e r e n t l e v e l s . But e x c e p t f o r a few i n d i v i d u a l s u c c e s s e s i n the b o o t h s of o t h e r e x h i b i t o r s the e x c e l l e n t a r e submerged by the twee, the t r i t e , the s e c o n d - r a t e and d o w n r i g h t v u l g a r . S m a l l i n d u s t r i e s needs must e x c e l or, i n the n a t u r e of t h i n g s , b i g g e r economic u n i t s , a b l e t o employ s u p e r i o r d e s i g n e r s and demand a h i g h e r l e v e l of workmanship, w i l l t a k e o v e r ; t h i s i s s a d f o r t h o s e who, l i k e me, b e l i e v e t h a t ' s m a l l i s b e a u t i f u l I F o r example, the t r a n s f e r type of d e s i g n s on the I v e r k mugs c o u l d be s l a p p e d on by the hundred dozen more e c o n o m i c a l l y than by the dozen and the a c t u a l workmanship would most l i k e l y be under s t r i c t e r s u p e r v i s i o n . A small f a c t o r y producing i n f e r i o r s t u f f i s l e s s l i k e l y t o s u r v i v e than a l a r g e one and has no more c l a i m on our support. Mrs. Q u i g l e y ' s e x q u i s i t e l y made C a r r i c k m a c r o s s l a c e f a i l s t o make the impact i t d e s e r v e s b e c a u s e o f o f t e n commonplace touches i n the design. I t i s an u n g r a t e f u l j o b t o w r i t e i n t h i s way b u t i t i s a l s o a duty. The Committee f o r the Promotion o f S m a l l I n d u s t r i e s
i s , i n my o p i n i o n , d o i n g no s e r v i c e t o s m a l l i n d u s t r y by mounting s u c h a d r e a r y e x h i b i t i o n , a mixum-gatherum o f u n c e r t a i n aims and h a p h a z a r d s t a n d a r d s . I n i t s e l f , the f a c t t h a t S t . Mary's H a l l was i d e n t i c a l l y a r r a n g e d as on the two p r e v i o u s o c c a s i o n s i s an i n d i c a t i o n (on top o f i t s s l i c k e r commoner c o n t e n t ) t h a t t h e r e i s something wrong somewhere - some s p r i n g of o r i g i n a l i t y , i d e a l i s m , i d i o s y n c r a s y l a c k i n g . There was an a b s e n c e o f g a i e t y and panache, an o v e r a l l d u l l n e s s and I f e e l s u r e t h i s need not be. The committee must e x e r c i s e more d i s c r i m i n a t i o n and make a much more c o n c e n t r a t e d e f f o r t t o a t t r a c t genuine a r t i s t - c r a f t s m e n , s k i l l e d c r a f t w o r k e r s and o r i g i n a l competent small industrialists who would have the e n e r g y and know-how t o d i s p l a y t h e i r a r t e f a c t s i n an e x c i t i n g way. We know s u c h e x i s t i n the S o u t h E a s t b u t the Committee w i l l f i n d i t h a r d t o c o l l a r them, or i n d e e d any s e r i o u s e x h i b i t o r , i f i t l a c k s the c o u r a g e and the e x p e r t i s e t o d e t e c t and e l i m i n a t e the d u l l and the s e c o n d - r a t e " KILLARMEY REGIONAL CRAFTS E X H I B I T I O N Mary Coleman s e n t us t h i s r e p o r t

The C r a f t w o r k e r s o f K e r r y and West Cork v/ere i n v i t e d t o e x h i b i t and t h e i r r e s p o n s e was m a g n i f i c e n t . Mrs. S u s a n C a s e y was the Convenor o f the E x h i b i t i o n and the E x h i b i t i o n Committee was c o m p r i s e d o f members of l o c a l o r g a n i s a t i o n s i n K i l l a r n e y . A r e a l l y w o r t h w h i l e e x h i b i t i o n was mounted and i t r e c e i v e d g r e a t s u p p o r t from the l o c a l p e o p l e and from v i s i t o r s . E x h i b i t s came from Y o u t h Groups, s t u d e n t s from the C o l l e g e of A r t , Cork ( t h e s e were s t u d e n t s from K e r r y a t t e n d i n g t h a t C o l l e g e ) , i n d i v i d u a l c r a f t w o r k e r s , s m a l l C r a f t I n d u s t r i e s , Bord F a i l t e and C o u n t r y M a r k e t s L t d mounted a Loan E x h i b i t i o n o f h i g h q u a l i t y crafts. Muckross House mounted an "Old K e r r y " e x h i b i t i o n and a l s o a l l o w e d many o f t h e i r c r a f t w o r k e r s t o d e m o n s t r a t e t h e i r c r a f t s d u r i n g the week. The C r a f t E x h i b i t i o n was a tremendous s u c c e s s and t h i s was due the e x c e l l e n t work done by the Convenor, Mrs. C a s e y and h e r s p l e n d i d Committee.

NATIONAL CRAFTS COMPETITION The encouragement and development o f c r a f t s i n I r e l a n d has been a f e a t u r e o f the a c t i v i t i e s o f the R o y a l D u b l i n S o c i e t y s i n c e the m i d - e i g h t e e n t h c e n t u r y . The N a t i o n a l C r a f t s C o m p e t i t i o n was
r e v i v e d i n i t ' s p r e s e n t form i n 1968. I n t h a t y e a r j u s t over 100 e n t r i e s were r e c e i v e d ^ t h i s y e a r t h e r e were 18 c a t e g o r i e s and 531 e n t r i e s were r e c e i v e d . I t i s i n t e r e s t i n g to note t h a t the a d j u d i c a t o r s (whom we h e a r d d e l i b e r a t e d i n t o the e a r l y h o u r s of the morning on two s u c c e s s i v e d a y s ) saw f i t t o w i t h h o l d awards i n f o u r c l a s s e s and made no f i r s t p r i z e award i n f o u r s e c t i o n s . W h i l e i t i s s a d t o t h i n k t h a t workmanship was not up t o r e q u i r e d s t a n d a r d i n some a r e a s c o n s t r u c t i v e c r i t i c i s m i s to be v a l u e d and one hopes t h a t c o m p e t i t o r s i n t h e s e s e c t i o n s w i l l r e c e i v e a copy of the a d j u d i c a t o r s d e t a i l e d r e p o r t s and t h a t d i r e c t o r s i n the v a r i o u s s c h o o l s and c o l l e g e s around the c o u n t r y w i l l a s s i s t i n s e e i n g t h a t improved t e a c h i n g w i l l be a v a i l a b l e i n these p a r t i c u l a r f i e l d s . The C r a f t s C o u n c i l o f I r e l a n d hope t o s p o n s o r an e v e n t i n September when some of the a d j u d i c a t o r s w i l l be p r e s e n t and where s t a n d a r d and q u a l i t y i n g e n e r a l i n c r a f t s i n I r e l a n d w i l l be the main t o p i c . PUBLICATIONS The demand on c r a f t s m e n f o r photographs f o r s a l e s and p r o m o t i o n a l work i n c r e a s e s c o n s t a n t l y ; more and more e x h i b i t i o n s a r e p r e l i m i n a r i l y a d j u d i c a t e d through s l i d e s ; employers and t h o s e a s s e s s i n g c l a i m s f o r s c h o l a r s h i p s and g r a n t s r e q u e s t s l i d e s or photographs of the a p p l i c a n t ' s work. Few c r a f t w o r k e r s can a f f o r d the s e r v i c e s of a f u l l - t i m e p r o f e s s i o n a l s t u d i o .
