CCol Jewellery Course blows its Trumpet! Dear Editor, Earlier this year the CCol Jewellery Course Trainer, Jane Huston, called me and asked me to take on a trainee for a two week work placement. The assistance I felt I would gain from this was input in the development of one of our new collections. Not only has the student taken our idea from concept through to finished product, she has also made other beautiful new designs. If this is the quality of graduate the Jewellery Design and Production Skills Course produces, I look forward to using the course as a valuable source of talented, skilled craftspeople for my company. Regards, Eoin McDonnell, Jewel A r t Ireland.

Book to Showcase Contemporary Ceramic Art and Pottery of Ireland Louise Ellen Cooley, an administrator of adult education at Michigan State University, USA and a member of the Lansing, Michigan Potters' Guild visited Ireland in March to research her pending book "A Celebration of Ceramics. Both utilitarian objects and adornments for the home will be featured. Mairead Dunlevy of the National Museum of Ireland/Collins Barracks will write the preface to the book. Louise will identify a contemporary Irish potter or ceramic artist to write the introduction to the book on the contemporary state of ceramics in Ireland today. The Internet One of the most frequently raised issues in the crafts sector is that of the use of technology, and more specifically, the internet. Bookshops are awash with hefty, costly books purporting to explain all. However, very few people have either the time or the patience to delve through these books. This information sheet hopefully goes some way to providing a straightforward and simple explanation.

Q: What exactly is the internet? A: Initially conceived by the American Defence Department for exchanging information, the Internet has evolved on a worldwide basis to include some 100 million users. The word itself is derived from international and network. This network of networks is a core of computers linked by high-speed connections. To gain access, you simply connect your computer to any of these networks via an Internet Service Provider, such as Indigo.

Q: What does it do?

shuttle, lags and pegs, bench. ÂŁ 1200.

A: Having gained access, you are now online. The thing to remember is that, internet use is not about computers, but people and communication. The most basic form of communication is electronic mail (e-mail), whereby the user can send a letter anywhere in the world for the cost of a local call. It's also possible to attach computer files to the e-mail, for example, a piece of artwork.

With a bit of practice you can post questions you need answered, search/purchase books or visit art galleries.

Q: Do I need it for my business? A: In the last few years the Internet has become as basic a business tool as the telephone or fax machine. Whether you can make money from internet use is another matter. For instance, online booksellers, Amazon are selling huge numbers of books, but are yet to make a profit. Using the internet for direct sales seems to be growing in popularity, particularly products such as CD's or books. So rather than using the web to attract sales, it is more advisable to think in terms of interactive advertising.

Q: What is interactive advertising? A: Boosting your marketing tools with a website is probably advisable. You can post information about your products, provide customer support and use feedback as valuable market research. A website has the potential to widen your customer base by broadening the particular niche that your product is aimed at.

Q: How do I get started? A:The most popular method is with a PC, a telephone line and a modem. The modem is hooked to a service provider who gives an account to you.

Q: The buzzwords like "information superhighway" put me off, how difficult is use of the internet? A: As with all buzzwords, the actual meaning is usually quite simple. For instance, the information superhighway effectively means a huge library, where the user can find information at the click of a mouse. If you can type a letter on a computer, you can use the internet. If you don't have a computer, consider dropping into an internet cafe, where you can use a machine
