A fine opportunity for craftspeople to hear views on the market from top Irish and UK buyers. If you wish to meet buyers in a one-to-one clinic to discuss your work, book early for this workshop and bring samples.

The exhibition is a collection of work by nine young Irish designers, participants of the Crafts Council of Ireland's Craft & Design Business Development Course. The course, supported by the European Social Fund, is aimed to equip craftspeople/designers with the necessary skills needed to establish commercially viable businesses.

'Stand by Me 1 Exhibition and Display Day Tuesday October 12th I 1.00 - 16.00 Venue: Dundalk Institute of Technology Admission: ÂŁ30 including lunch Speakers: To be announced. Showcase 2000 is only 5 months

The impressive line-up includes Joanna Kidney's 'photographic drawings' done in the darkroom and then worked over with mixed media and layers of transparent hand dyed silks. Jewellery designer Des Doyle's new collection called 'Universal form' is made from roller

embossed sterling silver and I8ct sheet and features curvaceous clean cut shapes that echo the lines of modern architecture. Also on view will be Cheryl Brown's collection of boxframed silver sculptures and bronzes. These humorous forms often sport over large shoes or hats, arguing with each other or asking you to dance. On show from fashion designer Karyn Hurley will be easy to wear pieces in weighty fabrics combined with layered organzas and silks. Karyn's trademarks are understated luxury and high quality of fabrics and finish. Other designers from the show are Catherina Donaghy who designs and produces handtufted rugs and wallhangings, contemporary furniture designer and maker Rory Ryan, surface designer Sheena McKeon who specialises in textiles, Lara Cobden who produces paintings by merging traditional painting with photographic printing and jewellery designer Selina Coyle who specialises in sterling silver contemporary jewellery with gold detailing.

Leslie Reed met with over 30 potters from around the country at a meeting in Kilkenny on the 4th September. There was a lengthy discussion on the possible setting up of a trade association for commercial potteries and on the future contribution of the Council's Pottery Skills Course to Irish pottery. While no conclusions were reached, the meeting was felt to have been both frank and useful. The Council will have further discussions with the Craft Potters Society of Ireland on how its own role might be expanded to better represent commercial potteries (from one person operations to those employing significant numbers). It was also agreed that the Council would seek resources for research on the pottery sector which represents over 25% of the CCol Register. This was necessary to see how Irish Pottery could develop its own 3 year development strategy. The Council is committed to expanding the information it holds on the entire craft industry, and so this type of activity will be a key feature of its Strategic Plan for the 2000-2002 period.
