The Crafts Council of Ireland (CCoI) initiated this unique and specially tailored tour to demonstrate the extraordinary quality of work being produced in this country. The visitors were taken to craft studios, workshops and galleries all over the island - from Kilkenny’s National Craft Gallery and the Design Tower on Dublin’s Pearse Street to the remote shores of Connemara’s lakes and up to the Ards Peninsula in Northern Ireland. This tour was an important step in developing Ireland as a desirable ‘arts destination’ for American collectors of contemporary craft. Once they return home, these key influencers will be encouraging discerning collectors to travel to Ireland, visit our studios and purchase work by makers of exceptional talent.

The ‘craft tour’ was organised by the Crafts Council of Ireland and Fáilte Ireland in conjunction with Craft Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board “We are trying to find more centralized ways to promote the work of Ireland’s finest craft artists, many of whom are living and working in remote, scenic areas,” says Cornelia McCarthy, CCoI’s Collector Programme Manager. “One objective is to work with partners to develop exchanges and tours, which would allow collectors to meet the craftspeople and experience the beauty of the settings that influence their work.”

Touring Craft & Crafting Tours The recent whistlestop trip around Ireland by a group of US collectors originated in 2007 in the USA at a key International fair SOFA (International Expositions of Sculpture Objects & Functional Art), Chicago. Key contacts were made at this event which enabled the Crafts Council of Ireland (CCoI) and Fáilte Ireland to explore the possibility of bringing a specialised group of people to Ireland - comprising of collectors, buyers and lovers of craft. The first pilot group came in Spring 2008 along with a number of US craft media specialists to help promote and create more awareness of this new initiative amongst the US public.
US visitors at Joe Hogan's studio
There were many visitors to the Irish booth at SOFA who were 'wowed' by the Irish work. The question they had was, where do I see THIS work in Ireland? And so began the creation by the CCoI
of a hit list of key gallerists, tour organisers and influential craft press who wanted to see fine studio craft in Ireland.
Once this list was established, together with Fáilte Ireland, the CCoI invited this group to Ireland on a familiarisation /fact-finding trip. The participants on the tour gave requests and preferences for the studios they wished to visit based on their collectors' interests or their preferred media. And so,
Kevin O’Dwyer silversmith with US visitors
little by little the tour took shape to literally go to all corners of Ireland. The group visited as many
galleries and retail outlets that was possible for their schedule as well as meeting designer/makers in their studios.
In all cases they gathered information about the locations so that they could inform their collectors and/or readers. Their intentions are to design their own tours to Ireland for their client base. The
CCoI are happy to help them set their itineraries based on their needs - glass tours, fine craft tours, general craft interest, wood etc. Fáilte Ireland will assist them with logistics and travel plans and recommend suitable bonded tour managers to help them with their trip.

Crafted Design At Arboretum - A New Departure Crafted Design at Arboretum - a new, dedicated Irish craft area, featuring work from 7 Crafts Council registered craft enterprises - selected by the team at Arboretum. The area is strongly branded and beautifully presented - with a focus on the stories behind the makers and the products. The seven craft enterprises featured in Crafted Design are:
• Christine Hughes Design (Ceramics) - Co. Dublin • Liz Nilsson - Longbord (Textiles) - Co. Dublin
• Herve de Wergifosse - Wergiwood (Woodturning) - Co. Wicklow • Larry Kinsella - Moth to A Flame (Candles) - Co. Kilkenny • The Leadbetter family - Jerpoint Glass - Co Kilkenny • Thomas Diem Ceramics - Co Meath
• Rob Monaghan & Ann Marie Sheridan - Marlay Ceramics - Co. Dublin
Rob Monaghan, Rachel Doyle and Dermot O’Neill
“We are proud to be the first garden centre in Ireland to work with the Crafts Council in developing a dedicated Irish craft area - and we
look forward to developing Crafted Design further and adding more Irish craftspeople into the mix” said Rachel Doyle, owner of the Arboretum Garden and Lifestyle Centre.
Crafted Design at Arboretum was launched, along with Arboretum’s new Inspiration Garden, on the 29th of March by celebrity gardener,
Dermot O’Neill. The theme of the day was ‘Let us show you how….’ and as part of the event Rob Monaghan of Marley Ceramics showed Dermot how to throw a pot - much to the amusement of the many spectators. The resulting piece - which was very impressive for a first
try - was given away to one lucky winner, along with a piece from Rob Monaghan, Ceramics.
Diarmuid Gavin - who was visiting Arboretum to give a talk on Chelsea Flower Show - also paid a visit to the Crafted Design area at
the end of April and met two of the craftspeople at a ‘Meet the Maker’ session, Thomas Diem and Larry Kinsella. Diarmuid was very impressed by the work - and it transpires that he had studied ceramics before dedicating himself to garden design.
“The Crafts Council of Ireland welcomed the opportunity to work with Arboretum on this initiative. One of our key objectives is to make
craft more accessible to consumers. There is a natural connection between craft and garden. Many gardeners having a keen eye for beauty, an
appreciation for design and a connection with nature and natural materials - all of which craft encompasses. Arboretum - with their focus
on innovation and creativity and their history of excellence, were ideal partners to pilot Crafted Design with. We hope that this will be the first of many such initiatives throughout the country” explains Nicola Doran, Retail Programme Manager with CCoI.

Habitat/House & Home Student Designer of the Year 2008 Award CCoI’s Ceramic & Design Skills Course Students come highly commended
“Stephen Martin’s Porcelain Colander is a showy item, designed more for the table than for the kitchen sink. It’s a funky, slightly blob-like design with decorative handles.” (Sunday Times)
Leonor Salanie and Stephen Martin were two of the highly commended runners up following in the footsteps of Karen Morgan, the overall winner in the 2006 competition and also a past student of the CCoI’s ceramics course.
“Leonor Salanie’s Spherical Sprout Grower is a beautiful interpretation of a kitchen object that is generally mundane in the extreme.” (Sunday Times)

CCoI’s Craft in the Classroom 2007 - 2008
This year's ‘Craft in the Classroom’ project took place in 15 schools in County Wexford and Carlow. On Saturday 19th of April all participants came to the Crafts Council in Kilkenny to present the children’s work and to celebrate the end of another successful project. The output of the project resulted in a huge amount of thoughtfully made crafty creations from which ten pieces were selected by Bernardine Hurley for the RDS National Craft Competition. There will be plenty opportunities to view the work produced as this exhibition embarks on its nationwide tour early next year. In addition a further 15 craftspeople have now become certified to teach craft in the classroom, bringing the total number to date to 46. “It would be fantastic to see this project nationwide with certified craftspeople in all counties” says CCoI Chief Executive Úna Parsons. Plans are underway to explore further opportunities in this area. 'Craft in the Classroom' trains and places highly skilled crafts people in primary schools throughout Ireland. Teachers and crafts people work collaboratively to create an exciting new approach to art within primary schools, while students get to work with highly skilled makers and learn a variety of new skills such as metal work and papermaking. Project managed by Polly Minett, this exciting collaboration was a resounding creative and artistic success. Congratulations to all involved, including the teachers, the makers and students. JOB ANNOUNCEMENTS WITHIN THE CRAFTS COUNCIL OF IRELAND Following the Council’s recent recruitment drive we are delighted
Tribute to Mary O’Gorman The recent untimely death of Mary O’Gorman, well known Kilkenny potter, has brought great sadness to the local community and to the crafts sector. Mary and partner Mark Campden together ran the successful Bridge Pottery, for many years and only recently moved to new premises in Burnchurch, Co Kilkenny. We extend our sympathy to Mary’s family and would like to formally acknowledge and pay tribute to the contribution she made to Irish ceramics and to her dedicated and long established career.
to announce the following new people to our team in Kilkenny.
Tribute to Mairéad Dunlevy
Emma MCGrath - Retail Executive Elizabeth Byrne - Executive Assistant Louise Allen - Craft Education & Awareness Manager We would also take this opportunity to wish Cornelia McCarthy, who was the CCoI Collector Programme Manager all the very best in her new endeavours.
On behalf of our Board and the wider Crafts Community we express our deep sympathies to the family and friends of Mairéad Dunlevy, Museum Curator and Author who sadly passed away on March 18th 2008. Mairéad was former keeper of the Art and Industrial Division of the National Museum of Ireland and was also the first director of the Hunt Museum in Limerick. Throughout her career she played a significant role in furthering the knowledge of Ireland’s material culture particularly in the area of decorative arts and textiles. The legacy of her work is of considerable significance and value to the Crafts Industry notwithstanding to our future generations of makers. Originally from Donegal, Ms Dunlevy is probably best known by the general public for her publication: 'Dress in Ireland: A History, The Collins Press, Cork as well as for her appearances on television and radio as an arts communicator.
NEW JOB OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE CRAFTS COUNCIL OF IRELAND Over the coming months the Crafts Council of Ireland will be announcing a number of new job openings for its Kilkenny offices. If interested in finding out more please keep an eye on our website and upcoming issues of Stopress for further announcements and details.
In a recent tribute to Mairéad in the Irish Times (March 31st. 2008) she was described by Dr Pat Wallace, director of the National Museum as ‘one of the greatest curators in the museum's 130-year history’. "Who among our colleagues and friends who knew Mairéad at the museum will ever hear the chink of Waterford or Belleek, the rustle of linen or lacework, or look again at a print of Dublin, a wallpaper or even a museum register book without remembering Mairéad? Who will open a drawerful of combs from Viking Dublin without thinking of her research in this area?" She will be sadly missed by all.

Through the ‘Craft Community’ section of Stopress, the Crafts Council of Ireland are happy to facilitate a FORUM AREA for constructive debate amongst craft enthusiasts. The views in this forum are therefore the views of individuals and are not necessarily the views of the Crafts Council of Ireland.
A New Dialogue
Opinion/Analysis/Criticism
Craft & Criticism: A New Dialogue began in the July/August issue, Stopress 16, 2007. Silversmith, Seamus Gill introduced the forum with a lecture he heard delivered by Bruce Metcalf on ‘Critical Writing on Crafts; Who Benefits?’ at SOFA (Sculptural Objects & Functional Art), Chicago, 2006. Since then there has been a great response to this forum from the wider craft community, including craftspeople, writers and academics. On the opposite pages is the latest contribution and response to this, by Sonya Landweer. Seamus Gill
Introduction
by Seamus Gill
I first posed the question of a need for a new dialogue among ourselves
in the July /Aug edition of Stopress in 2007 as an opinion/ analysis/
criticism column. There has been a great response and feedback and the
debate has been running for nearly a year now. Looking back at what has
been sent in and printed I am surprised that there has only been one review of an exhibition, that by Jim Dennison on the Side by Side exhibition at the Hunt Museum in the Jan/Feb edition.
But the Art verses Craft debate is very strong. I was unaware of how
important it was especially among some sectors of craft (if it’s OK to
use that word!). As a silversmith and taking into consideration that there
knew where to send them, or what curator would look after them - so
they were sent to the “Applied Arts”. A department in museums gave rise to the labelling of contemporary crafts as Applied Arts!
As a term to label what we do, “Applied Arts” is politically correct for
some, but demeaning for others. It does give the impression that it is not real Art, only applied. Maybe it could be labelled “Aspiration Art” instead.
As to where the debate of art verses craft is going now. Who is the biggest Artist in the world today? It’s not a painter or a sculptor, not
even a conceptual artist! It’s a glass blower, the American Dale Chihuly.
His work has been exhibited in more museums around the world than
aren’t too many silversmiths left, there is more concern with keeping
any other living artist and his work has probably been seen by more
or craftspeople.

Title A New Dialogue ‘Opinion/Analysis/Criticism Response by: Sonya Landweer, Jeweller/Ceramicist The Craft versus Art debate
It is a source of constant amazement to me that the Craft versus Art debate keeps reappearing without coming much closer to a definition of what unites and separates both.
and the pushing of boundaries - in the sciences and the arts as well as the crafts. In so doing we can come closer to the materialisation of ideas and ideals that add quality to life.
In so far as I understand it, craft is a skill; an acquired skill in which manual processes, or at least the mastering of techniques, figures prominently. This applies to art as well, but perhaps it can be said that in art the skill is transcended to more than the sum of its parts? Today, however, this can equally be applied to craft!
Perhaps it can be said that the final result in art is singular and unpredictable, whereas in various areas of craft and design, the end result is repeatable, multiplied and dependent on function and form. Art can become craft when it starts to repeat what it knows already. Craft can become art in individual pieces, when it carries skill and ideas beyond mere good design. Maybe then, the terms ‘Applied Art’ and ‘Fine Art’ can bring the two closer together. When skills are transcended to a quality where debating and defining both terms becomes irrelevant.
Whatever discipline one has chosen to work in, the work can remain ‘mere craft’, as the term is taken to mean at present, or it can come to a point where it can be considered to be ‘art’ as it is understood today. To be an accomplished craftsman/woman suggests that one has mastered the skill involved in realising the craft of one’s choice. This equally applies to the arts: One can be expected to have mastered the ‘craft of one’s art’. The collective term ‘Arts and Crafts’ has become confused and lost its original content. From the point of view of the arts establishment, when one was speaking of ‘craft’ it was mostly in the pejorative. In some circles there is still a considerable distinction between the two. To my knowledge, in particular in ceramics, glass and photography, this distinction has become obsolete. Certainly in Holland, from where I originate, this has been the case since the early 60s. Whereas in Ireland, only photography seems to have been elevated to the level of art. In the so-called ‘crafts’, there is in recent years a particular concern with excellence of workmanship. This does not necessarily transform work into ‘art’ yet it can do so. In the same way art can become ‘mere craft’ where it is no more than a clever accumulation of components. In the arts, the most basic skills often seem to go by the wayside. Clever constructions, using all sorts of things not particular to the chosen discipline, appear as much in the area of craft as in art. Anything goes! Has this contributed to a loss, or fear, of the individual’s own judgement on the part of teachers, tutors, critics and the public when confronted with the results? Perhaps at present ‘process’ and ‘originality’ of concept often surpass the need for mastery of a skill for artists as well as craftsmen? Craftsmen as well as artists look for innovative ideas to be expressed, borrowing from each other not only where materials are concerned, but also processes. Does this add to the argument as to what art and craft are? Does quality enter into this? Precisely this seems to have become irrelevant in many of the things surrounding us. In fact, industry tries to make products in such a way today that they do not last, and constantly need renewing, for fear our economic structure might break down! Is that perhaps why craft and quality of workmanship is experiencing such an upsurge in many countries today? Once, one of the prerequisites of quality was that something was made to last - the opposite is now often the case. Loss of quality of life is talked about. What is meant by ‘quality of life’? Do we still have it? It can be there in experimentation, constant questioning
When checking with the Oxford Dictionary I found, to my surprise, that the terms ‘art’ and ‘craft; have for centuries been virtually synonomous, meaning ‘human skill or workmanship’. Only since the 20th century these meanings appear to have changed. I do not wish to add argument for arguments sake, I merely wanted to show how closely related both are and how - even today - craft and art are the same thing at peak performance. Perhaps this unites both? Sonya Landweer

Craft Community News GOING GREEN The Craftmark exhibition ‘Going Green’ was officially opened by Úna Parsons in the County Museum Dundalk in late March with Joe Kelly Director of Craft NI in attendance to testify to the true cross border reach of this network and economic initiative for artist/designer/makers in the East Border Region. Showcasing the work of thirteen designer/makers from the area, Craftmark were able to capitalise on the fact that the Green Party were holding their first annual conference in government in Dundalk during the exhibition run in the County Museum. Minister Trevor Sergant and Mary White the Deputy Leader of the Green Party who is also the party spokesperson on Arts and Culture visited the exhibition. The Going Green exhibition in Drogheda will also coincide with Craftmark’s Open Studio event, Craft Map. Now in its fifth year Craft Map 2008 will feature 32 designer/makers across Counties Armagh, Down, Louth and Monaghan, and is a popular event in the area. Earlier this year Craftmark ran a seminar entitled ‘Put Yourself on the Map’ which focused on the Open Studio experience. Craft Map will run on May 24th and 25th and full details of participating studios will be available on www.craftmark.ie. “The bursary has been a wonderful opportunity to take time to develop, try out and bring to fruition ideas that might not otherwise have been realised. It has been a great experience to get fully into the joy of making without constraints. I believe that the bursary idea will be seen as one the best initiatives that the Crafts Council has developed and I would encourage anyone interested in deepening their work to apply for it.” Joe Hogan, joint winner Bursary ‘06 Images: Liam Flynn (2005) Woodturner, Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan, Joe Hogan (2006) Basketmaker Photo: Brendan Landy Denis Brown (2006), Calligrapher Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan

“Derek knew exactly what he wanted to propose to CCoI - a six week residency next Spring at the International Ceramic Research Centre, Guldagergaard, Denmark - and spent a considerable amount of time over the application. A hub for professional and emerging ceramicists seeking to advance their artistic development, the centre is an ideal place to begin building an international network. Derek can look forward to workshops, thematic symposiums, lectures and preparing for an exhibition in Denmark at the end of his stay. “As well as giving me a period away from my comfort zone, I’m looking forward to the inspiring people I’ll meet there and to interacting with the artists in residence. The idea is to broaden my horizons to reach a more European perspective.” Derek Wilson University of Ulster

The Crafts Council of Ireland is holding their inaugural summer ball in the castle and its grounds. Meet the people that you only see at Showcase in the splendid grounds of Kilkenny’s jewel, the castle and its grounds. Eat, drink and be merry! Creating is what you do everyday … so … create your own costume or accessory - a gown, a tunic, a tie, a mask - anything goes! Feathers, sequins, papier maché or your own unique blend of materials … Go on…blow a glass slipper! On arrival you will experience the Brazilian Carnival Band Rhythm Riot who will meet and greet you with whistle, drums and carnival costumes. You will then enter the castle’s Great Hall for a drinks reception. Dining is al fresco in the courtyard of the castle - suckling pig and a gorgeous salad bar. National Craft Gallery prepares for SOFA 2008 Preparations are once more underway for Ireland’s participation in one of the world’s most exciting art fairs. For the third year running, the Crafts Council of Ireland’s (CCoI) National Craft Gallery will be taking taking some of the finest examples of contemporary Irish craft over to SOFA Chicago. Chicago’s Annual Exposition of Sculptural Objects & Functional Art (7th - 9th November, 2008) is a key international event for contemporary craft and applied art. Last year a record 35,000 people visited Navy Pier to see work by some of the world’s most important dealers and galleries. 23 leading artists have recently been selected to showcase their work. Ceramicists, jewellers, glass artists, woodturners, furniture designers, fiber artists and silversmiths - the participating artists were chosen for their mastery of skills and innovative design. For some it will be their first time to participate in such a important event, for others it’s a return trip but for all of them, it’s the opportunity of a lifetime. The past two years have been very successful ones for the Irish participants at SOFA. Many of our craftspeople gained international representation and found homes in major American collections. In 2007, the National Craft Gallery made a significant impact: Critically acclaimed furniture designer Joseph Walsh was selected to exhibit in the Raw Space and Audrey Whitty, Curator of Applied Arts at the National Museum of Ireland, gave a key lecture on the Museum’s important collection of contemporary applied arts. With the quality of craftsmanship the CCoI are bringing to Chicago this November, SOFA 2008 is certain to be another successful outing for contemporary Irish craft. European Baskets National Craft Gallery, Castle Yard, Kilkenny
Brent Vinkler
3rd May - 13th July 2008 European Baskets, curated by Joe Hogan (Ireland) and Mary Butcher (UK), features functional and sculptural work by some of Europe’s most important basketmakers.
The exhibition, which runs from 3rd May to 13th July, will feature work by almost 80 basketmakers from all over Europe - including England, Scotland, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Spain and, of course, Ireland. Spread across both galleries, European Baskets will showcase traditional baskets, functional work by professional basketmakers and a selection of contemporary pieces. It is a wonderful achievement to gather together this traditional, indigenous work into one major showcase. Both curators are passionate about exposing people to this range of baskets before the tradition dies out. “Today there is much more emphasis on contemporary work,” says Hogan, “but we must be mindful that when the old basket makers die, so too will the traditional baskets.” ‘These traditional makers all over Europe were making wonderful work from indigenous materials, just because it was beside them. That just doesn’t happen anymore. Today, 95% of the baskets in Europe come from China. That figure is even higher in Ireland. We hope this show will open debate and perhaps even encourage a demand for local work made with indigenous materials.” European Baskets also includes a catalogue, which is a comprehensive historical record of the work on show. Hogan says the plan is that this catalogue will be very much part of the exhibition; putting all of the work in context and recording the history of basketmaking throughout Europe. “But as well as looking back at traditional baskets, we will also cover cutting edge contemporary work and that space in between, this is the space that most basketmakers inhabit, creating professional, functional baskets.”
