Individually, pieces tell their own stories. They demonstrate creative applications of the various metal patination processes in which each individual maker specialises. These works communicate the ambition of craft to continue to challenge perceptions. They also speak to the journey of a community of makers, who have supported each other to expand the boundaries of their discipline. After five years in development, we are delighted to see curators Sara Roberts and Cóilín Ó Dubhghaill, realise this exceptional exhibition. Presented in partnership with the Office of Public Works, the State Apartments in Dublin Castle are a fitting opening venue for What Colour is Metal? We also acknowledge the support of National College of Art & Design, Sheffield Hallam University and Arts Council England research grant in the development and realisation of this exhibition. I want to thank our board at the Design & Crafts Council Ireland for their support in allowing this exhibition, our chairman, Mr Andrew Bradley, and our funding body, Enterprise Ireland, for their commitment to craft in Ireland.
