Operation TBI Freedom News/Updates (Q2 FY-24)
Staff in the Spotlight: Sarah Lowrey
Q: What is your involvement with military veteran brain injury survivors?
"My work with veteran brain injury survivors is case-by-case assistance, getting them access to resources, ensuring they are in the VA system and receiving appropriate care, and doing everything I can to improve their quality of life. Every veteran's injuries and needs are different, and I love digging into each person's situation to figure out a plan to get them from where they are currently to a place where they will be able to thrive.
Sometimes, it's as simple as getting them more involved in social activities and being their cheerleader as they start a new job. Other times, it's being an advocate for them and walking them through the complex system of VA benefits. A key element of the job is knowing how brain injury affects each person and assisting them in navigating life with that condition."
Q: What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
"As a Colorado native, I love everything about the great outdoors and the activities that come with it. I'm a big hiker, and when the weather is nice, you can usually find me doing something out in the sunshine!"
Q: What OTF Value means the most to you?
"The OTF value of Collaboration is nearest and dearest to me. I know I'm not the golden nugget that can fix all my clients' problems, but I can find others who might do just that. I love the concept of a "care team" and think that taking care of my clients includes building up a team of people around them who can bolster their care and work together to get them the help they need."

I am most proud of Brian because he listened at his intake and listened in subsequent conversations about his care and recovery despite being a licensed therapist. He has stayed calm and poised throughout personal difficulties, continuing to have hope for his recovery and the future.
Brian began returning to the therapy field and has been weighing options to set up his private practice, as he wants to serve service members and veterans. Aside from work, Brian loves big game hunting and being outdoors.
