We are excited to share the latest update from our team as we reflect on a busy and rewarding third quarter. Despite the hectic summer surge, our staff took a moment to enjoy a Colorado Vibes baseball game to kick off June's PTSD Awareness Month. We were thrilled to see our very own Sergeant William J. Barclay throw the first pitch! The OTF team remains in high spirits, driven by our mission to support veterans, service members, and their families. Over the past few months, we've actively provided comprehensive support to those affected by Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Our commitment to empowering individuals to live fulfilling lives is unwavering, as demonstrated by our personalized case management and unique TBI support programs.
As we enter the fourth quarter of 2024, our team is focused on finishing the year strong. We have exciting events ahead, including OTF's inaugural Alumni Induction, family outings in Breckenridge, and much more. Our commitment to providing top-quality case management for living with TBI remains unwavering
Past Quarter's Highlights
Visit to the Bruce McCandless Veterans Home
The Operation TBI Freedom staff had a truly wonderful time volunteering and visiting the veterans and their families at the Bruce McCandless Community Living Center in Florence, CO. During our visit, we were honored to dedicate the United States Space Force flag, which now proudly hangs alongside its five sister service flags in the living center. This dedication was a meaningful gesture, symbolizing our respect and recognition for all military branches.
Spending time with the veterans at Bruce McCandless was deeply moving. These men and women are part of the greatest generation, and their incredible stories of bravery and sacrifice left a lasting impression on us all. We felt privileged to listen to their experiences, learn from their wisdom, and ensure their legacy inspires future generations.
Even though we were all trying to figure out which camera to look at for this picture, the veterans and the staff still looked amazing! We left with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to supporting our veterans and their families—finally, we thank Mik Spillane for coordinating this touching event.

Belair and
Operation TBI Freedom Sporting Clay Fundraiser
The Operation TBI Freedom staff and selected veterans had a fantastic time at a charity shooting event hosted by Belair, a leader in the construction and site work industry with offices in Denver, Minnesota, and Florida. Belair, a dedicated partner to Craig Hospital for the past 22 years, organized this event to benefit Operation TBI Freedom's (OTF) veterans and active-duty military personnel with traumatic brain injuries (TBI). The event allowed OTF's veterans and staff to spend a meaningful day together for an extraordinary cause. After enjoying sporting clays at the shooting range, attendees were treated to a delicious BBQ lunch meal before participating in an exciting raffle with numerous prizes.
In previous years, this event has successfully raised nearly $600,000 for Craig Hospital.

TBI Education Workshops
TBI Education Workshops: Every 2nd Thursday of each month. See OTF Events tab at https://craighospital.org/operation-tbi-freedom/otf-events
TBI education is fundamental to the recovery process. It provides survivors and their families the knowledge to identify symptoms, seek appropriate care, and create a supportive healing environment. By encouraging collaboration between professionals and the community, TBI education fosters a comprehensive approach to recovery.
Thanks to Tim Patrick's dedication, we've brought together experienced classroom instructors from Craig Hospital and our local community. These experts offer essential insights and knowledge about TBIs, empowering individuals and their support networks with the information needed to better understand their condition and its impact.
The topics facilitated by Tim Patrick this past quarter—driving after a TBI, equine-assisted therapy, and concussion/TBI rehabilitation—are crucial for empowering individuals with TBIs and their support networks. Understanding driving safety post-TBI helps ensure independence and mobility. Equine-assisted therapy offers unique emotional and physical benefits, enhancing overall well-being. Comprehensive rehabilitation strategies provide a roadmap for effective recovery, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. These sessions equip participants with vital knowledge and practical tools to navigate life after a TBI.
Embracing Support: The Vital Role of TBI Peer Support Groups
TBI peer support group: Every 3rd Tuesday of each month. See the OTF Events tab at https://craighospital.org/operation-tbi-freedom/otf-events
TBI peer support groups are vital for our veterans, providing them with essential tools to manage their condition and improve their lives. This past quarter, John Lenz facilitated key classes on various TBI aspects. Through these support groups, we're able to normalize the consequences of TBI, helping participants feel validated and supported in their recovery journey.
In "Behavioral & Emotional Symptoms after a TBI," John provided strategies to manage emotional and behavioral changes, emphasizing support and coping mechanisms. The "Headaches and Brain Injury" session focused on understanding and managing headaches caused by TBIs, offering insights into treatment options. Craig Hospital's Arielle Reindeau also presented an excellent class on "Setting Yourself Up For Success In Learning," highlighting techniques to enhance cognitive function, memory, and concentration post-TBI.
Through these peer support groups, Operation TBI Freedom and John Lenz have equipped veterans with practical knowledge and skills, fostering resilience and independence on their recovery journey
Empowering Through Recreation: Enhancing Lives of Veterans and Service Members with TBI
Renee Miller took a fantastic initiative by hosting an Art Exhibit night, showcasing some of the finest works of art created by veterans of Operation TBI Freedom over the years. The evening was filled with fun, laughter, and camaraderie, bringing together the community to celebrate the creativity and resilience of our veterans.
As participants displayed their best pieces, the pride in their achievements was palpable. The art exhibit highlighted their artistic talents and provided a platform for veterans to share their stories and connect with others who have had similar experiences. Renee's dedication to organizing this event created a memorable and uplifting experience for everyone involved.
Engaging in recreational pursuits, such as art learning, offers numerous benefits for individuals living with TBI and PTSD. These activities provide a creative outlet for expressing emotions and experiences that might be difficult to articulate verbally. Art learning, in particular, encourages mindfulness and concentration, helping individuals to focus on the present moment and reduce stress.
For those with TBI, art can aid in cognitive rehabilitation by enhancing fine motor skills, improving memory, and stimulating neural pathways. It also fosters a sense of accomplishment and boosts self-esteem as individuals see their progress and create tangible works of art.
Additionally, recreational activities like art learning promote social interaction and community building. They provide opportunities for individuals to connect with others who share similar experiences, reducing feelings of isolation and fostering a supportive network.
Overall, engaging in art and other recreational pursuits offers therapeutic benefits that contribute to the holistic well-being of individuals living with TBI and PTSD, enhancing their quality of life and supporting their journey to independence.
