Supplement makers, however, say lutein supplements could reduce the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration. Craig Maltby, a spokesman for Kemin Foods in Des Moines, which makes the FloraGLO Lutein used in the majority of lutein-containing supplements, cited an unpublished yearlong study of 90 macular degeneration patients in which visual sharpness improved among those taking lutein.

er to the rescue The pacifier All hail the pacifier. It may save our collective global health. Parents licking their babies’ pacifiers–rather rather than washing them off with water–may may help strengthen the infants’ immune health. The microbes in mom mom’s or dad’s saliva might help train the kiddies’ immune cells’ memories at a very early age, thereby cutting down on immune triggered childhood conditions like eczema and asthma. Such conditions are aided by an over over-active, active, out-ofout balance immune system that is not properly identifying and retreating from certain microbes that do not warrant an all out assault from attacking immune cells. So says a new study from Sweden published in the journal Pediatrics this week. It’s not quite as gross as Aliciaa Silverstone’s method–chewing chewing her baby’s food first before feeding it to the baby. But is does make one think. Who knew? Those immune cells are fascinating, but man, they can lead to some crazy stuff.

Some of the best health infographics out there Infographics are hot now. Will they be 5 years from now? Or 5 months? Who knows? But not all infographics are created equal. Some have too much information and can’t fit inside a standard infographic format size without looking more crowded than a Robert Smith festival. Others have a great mix of information and are well written, but lack innovative design. In n my book, a good infographic should present relevant, interesting information (always accurate) in a design template that illustrates and embellishes the topic in an innovative way. In other words, don’t drop in PowerPoint charts and call it an infographi infographic. Here are several health and immune immune-health-related related infographics that I think stand out: Vitamin B B-12 Deficiency – A graphic that is targeted, concise and informative. formative. Illustrates problems that can emerge if you’re not getting enough B B-12. Scenic Route To Longer Life – This packages the whole thing nicely. From stress to chocolate to anger management. Your Guide to Sugar – Wow. This puts the sugar storm in perspective. Sugar is an enemy to immune health, reducing the activity tivity of white blood cells in just a matter of hours. Health Benefits of a Mediterranean Diet - This lists the foods and the health advantages of the Meddy diet. Not enough sourcing, though. History of Spices – Spices have health health-promoting promoting properties. This infographic is packed full of information laid out in a vibrant, eye-catching eye way. Sitting is Killing You – Eeeeeeek! The sedentary lifestyle is depicted in this dynamic graphic, showing how sitting for long periods of time damages your yo health.
