Schools Integrate Social-Emotional Learning into the Classroom

With a noticeable increase in stress, anxiety and depression among students, private schools are implementing new approaches to help address the issue. Wellness programs and counseling services include social-emotional learning, the process of developing self-awareness and the interpersonal skills vital for success.

To meet that need, the daily class schedule has been rearranged this year to add a one-hour daily block called “community time.” The period will be held before lunch. Students will use the time to decompress and participate in clubs and activities. Speakers will also be brought in to talk to the students about a wide variety of health and wellness topics, such as self-care, conflict resolution, digital and financial literacy, alcohol and drug abuse, and violence prevention. “Our goal is to provide students with a skill set beyond academics,” Gargiulo says.

“Students of all ages across the country experienced a social and emotional slide during the pandemic,” says Lori-Anne Brogdon, head of school, Catherine Cook School, PreK-8, Chicago.

“We noticed a need through the pandemic for more health programming,” says Rocco Gargiulo, principal at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart, Lake Forest. The all-girls Catholic high school has 120 students, both day and boarding. “We wanted our students to feel heard, understood and cared for,” Gargiulo adds.

Like many private schools, Catherine Cook was mostly in-person during the pandemic.

“We were fortunate to be able to engage with our students,” Brogdon says.

04 been trained in the “Responsive Classroom” program. It is a student-centered, socialemotional learning approach to teaching and discipline designed to create safe, joyful, and engaging classrooms and school communities. Touch points throughout the day help students connect. Examples include morning meetings and closing circles at the end of the day. Middle school advisories with about eight students meet regularly. This past summer, 10 teachers and administrators from Catherine Cook received special training on social-emotional learning. The school has two counselors. A socialemotional teacher also works with students in grades 3-8, and students in the lower grades work with one of the counselors. Students learn how to manage their emotions and handle stress. “We give them the language to talk about these issues,” says Brogdon. “Our kids know who they are.”

Another new initiative this year at Lycée Francais de Chicago is the introduction of a responsive teaching approach. The program was successfully piloted last spring. Teachers were trained in the method which empathizes a positive perspective on teaching and discipline. Student needs are viewed from the perspective that all people want to find a sense of belonging and acceptance. Morning meetings where students and teachers can connect are part of the program. “It’s a great way to start the day on a positive note,” Morvay says. “Students learn better when they feel Sacredbetter.”Heart Schools, PreK-8, also uses the responsive classroom approach. With about 600 students, the school has two campuses (one for the preschool; and one for grades SK-8), located about a mile apart on Chicago’s North Side.

BREAK THE STIGMA

The school also brings in a local program called Elyssa’s Mission. It provides hands-on support to students, staff, parents on how to recognize and assist teens most at-risk for suicide and depression. During the program, social workers conduct case scenarios to teach students how to talk about their problems. “We want to break the Bennett Day School provides a nurturing environment.

Social and emotional learning themes are incorporated throughout the curriculum.

Other social and emotional learning practices have been used at the school for some time now. For example, the “Developmental Designs” approach addresses the academic and social needs of adolescents. The program provides structures for teaching to the whole child so that academic growth is enhanced, rather than limited by the social and emotional realities of adolescence.

Sacred Heart is making a concerted effort this year to include social and emotional learning concepts into professional development activities for staff and faculty.

A holistic approach to learning is also key at Lake Forest Country Day School, PreK8. The curriculum is designed to support a lot of different types of students. “We have a relationship approach to learning,” says Alex Sheridan, director of enrollment at the school in Lake Forest. “We balance emotional, academic and social development.” Lycée Francais de Chicago, PreK-12, a French international school in Lincoln Square, introduced a new social emotional learning curriculum this year. The online program for grades 1-12 is available for students and faculty. Topics cover issues around families, empathy, coping skills, building healthy relationships and other themes. Class discussions or activities often follow videos which have French subtitles for the younger students. Videos for the upper school are only in French. “We’re pleased to offer a cohesive curriculum that will follow the students,” says Amy Morvay, primary school counselor at Lycée Francais de Chicago.

Students at Regina Dominican, an all-girls Catholic high school in Wilmette, complete an emotional wellness survey when they return to campus each fall. It gives the staff an idea of how things are going for the students. The school has two counselors, a full-time social worker and a student services coordinator. Regina Dominican has support groups that cover issues such as grief and loss, stress management, women empowerment and building self-esteem. The groups meet once a week for six weeks. The groups are voluntary though the staff will reach out to students who they feel might benefit from attendance.

The Ancona School in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood was founded 60 years ago as an integrated institution. Ancona has about 200 students, age 3 - grade 8. “Multiculturalism and a commitment to diversity and equity remains true in our mission and in the lived experience of our students and faculty today,” says Liz Iverson, head of school at Ancona.

The audit will include a review of items such as teaching materials, wall displays, and holiday celebrations. The audit will be led by the Director of School Culture. “We have an eye toward equity,” says Iverson. “It touches everything we do.”

Unlike their public-school counterparts that typically draw students from one geographic area, private schools draw a wide range of students of different backgrounds from the greater Chicago area. And unlike the stereotypes, private schools are not enclaves of privilege. Many schools offer generous grants and scholarships to create an economically diverse student population.

The school has 440 students, drawn from 39 different countries. The average class size is 12 students.

This year, Ancona is conducting an anti-bias audit to make sure the school environment aligns with its vision that everyone matters.

The school is forming a DEI council to implement policies that include different perspectives. The DEI council will also measure program results. “We want to make sure Lake Forest Academy is a welcoming environment,” says Mayikana. “We want students to be heard.”

“Independent schools reach a diversity of students,” says Sally Sharp, interim executive director at the Lake Michigan Association of Independent Schools, a non-profit organization promoting the value and benefits of independent school education in Chicago and the surrounding area. “There is a school for everyone,” Sharp adds. The Chicago area has a number of schools that offer cultural and international diversity, attracting students and families from other countries and ethnic backgrounds. These schools often provide immersion in a second language and also a unique perspective on another culture.

“We are racially and economically diverse,” she says, adding that the school makes tuition adjustments of about $2 million a year.

“We are an international school,” says Andrew Humphrey, marketing coordinator at the German International School Chicago, PreK-8. The diverse student body represents 30 nationalities. He adds that parents choose the school for the bilingual, intercultural curriculum and close-knit, international Withcommunity.thegoal to create global citizens, the curriculum includes a combination of the international baccalaureate approach along with common core standards and aspects of the German education system.

This year, the school has formed a partnership with a middle school in Germany. Students will participate in peer-to-peer learning.

For example, students from Ukraine and Russia shared their experiences and different viewpoints on the war in Ukraine. “The students were able to express what they were feeling and process the events,” Mayikana says. Student leaders at Lake Forest Academy facilitate “community dialogues.” Topics are selected by the students. Also, during multicultural celebration day in March students from different countries share special aspects of their culture. “We want the students to hear different perspectives,” Mayikana says.

The Center’s Civic Education Project offers promising young people opportunities to learn and serve in communities across the country, developing the leadership skills they need to make a positive impact on the world, according to the website.

The student led DEI Club at Regina Dominican is empowered to create events and activities for the whole school. The Club sponsored an event during the advisory period where students watched a TV series on Colin Kaepernick, the civil rights activist and football quarterback. Student discussions followed the documentary. During Black History Month speakers were brought in along with local black business owners. “We can engage students and work for equity in a respectful environment,” Porreca says. Social justice and service learning are course topics at the Northwestern Center for Talent Development, Evanston. The Center is part of Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy. The Center holds a variety of accelerated academic and advanced enrichment classes, both online and in person for gifted students. Both credit-bearing and enrichment courses are available. There is an application process and admission is based on test scores or a portfolio.

Catherine Cook School, PreK-8, Chicago, has a robust DEI initiative detailed on its website. Program elements include the DEI council, curriculum areas and strategic goals among other components. The school also has a director of DEI, Motoko Maegawa. This is her third year at the school. She works with various school constituencies to implement the program. Also, parents are invited to explore DEI topics at special events such as outings and book discussions. Regina Dominican, an all-girls Catholic high school in Wilmette, has a commitment to justice and dignity for all people reflecting the values of the Adrian Dominican Sisters, the school’s founders, according to Kathleen Porreca, principal. “Our commitment is rooted in Catholic social teaching,” she says.

One of the course offerings is “Raise Your Voice,” a public speaking-focused 6-week course with weekly live online class meetings. The course for 7th and 8th graders is meant to build student capacity to engage, inspire, and motivate others through various channels, including social media. Students practice developing persuasive arguments and delivering those messages, according to Linsey Crowninshield-Ryan, assistant program director of the Civic Education Project. She notes that the Center offers other classes that address the topic of diversity and social justice. “Students have a lot of options,” she says.

idea: Make climate change an entire high school course, not just a unit of the science curriculum. So, he launched a class on climate change at Francis W. Parker School, an independent school in Chicago for AfterPreK-12.two years, teaching remotely during the pandemic, he realized that the science of climate change was rather gloomy. So, he approached a history teacher colleague at Francis Parker to co-lead a course that paired the science with policy. “We wanted to provide the tools for students to become activities on climate change,” says Zaremba. “We took the class to a whole new level.” Independent and private schools like Francis Parker are introducing innovative ways to teach about the environment. Young people are naturally interested in the topic because a healthy environment is vital to their future.

Bennett Day School, an independent school in Chicago for PreK-12, mixes climate science and social policy. Students in the upper school created websites on climate change that contained action plans for a response to the crisis. This fall, 9th and 10th graders are focused on water. The unit will not only cover the science of water but also how access to water shapes human history.

GCE Lab School, 9-12, features experiential learning rooted in the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. GCE stands for Global Citizenship Experience which reflects the approach at the Chicago high school. Enrollment has grown from 50 students last year to nearly 70 this year.

The class at Francis Parker concluded with “Call to Action” projects that were put on display in the library. The projects included solutions such as sustainable architecture and the addition of green space in Chicago neighborhoods. “We want students to see themselves engaged,” Zaremba says.

Older students in the middle school discuss topics such as food scarcity and food access. “Projects evolve from student interest,” says Meg Fitzgerald, early childhood director at Bennett.

The focus is on student engagement.

Environmental science in the lower grades at Bennett uses hands-on inquiry-based learning. For example, the kindergarten class built sustainable gardens to learn how food grows.

Students in the AP environmental studies class at Lake Forest Academy, a high school in Lake Forest, traveled last spring to Olympic National Park in the Pacific Northwest to conduct field studies. This year, a new course includes a section on environmental engineering. It will address different environmental issues, the solutions and the flaws in those solutions and what still needs to be done. “We pride ourselves on our electives,” says Chris Tennyson, head of school at Lake Forest Academy.

Environmental Classes Take Action

After drudging through the summer swamps of Canada’s Hudson Bay five years ago collecting water left from melting snow, science teacher Ryan Zaremba got an idea. He had been joined on the trip by other teachers and scientists as part of a research program. The purpose was to evaluate the long-term effects of climate change on the Zaremba’stundra.

The school offers a full range of study. Each GCE course includes academic studies, field experiences and action projects. “Our students are forward thinking,” says August Davenport, director of enrollment at GCE. “We are problem solving for the problems of tomorrow.”

Greta Thunberg, the young climate activist has inspired many teens to get involved in the fight against climate change. A recent survey shows that eight out of 10 teens expect climate change and other environmental forces to affect their life decisions. The same survey also found that 77% feel they have a responsibility for the planet and feel empowered to act.

At Lake Forest Academy, a high school in Lake Forest, students produce a play and musical each year. “We are a busy arts department,” says Jason Koenig, chair of the fine and performing arts department at Lake Forest ForAcademy.theatrical productions, students engage in character building, designing sets and operating the equipment. “We put the students in the center of this process,” Koenig says.

For example, students at the O-School produce an award-winning literary magazine. They also participate in a poetry slam competition and a program at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Diana Kon, executive director at the O-School, says: “These kinds of experiences bring the students out of themselves.”

fall’s play was an immersive interpretation of Alice in Wonderland. Because of COVID restrictions, the students used a campus garden as the performance venue. The audience assumed the role of Alice and moved through different stations in the garden. “We didn’t want to do something inside, so we found another option,” Koenig says.

The school has introduced two new programs over the last several years. Well-known songwriter and singer Justin Tranter, who has written hit songs for artists such as Gwen Stefani and Linkin Park and is an alum of the school, donated a professional recording studio for the school’s recording and music program. Students enjoy a high-level hands-on experience to study music production, song writing, music recording and commercial composition. Tranter even taught some of the songwriting classes last year. “The students had a class with an actual rock star,” Patera Thesays.new photography program includes a photo lab with computer stations, cameras and lenses, 3-D printing, and a high-end studio. Though the pandemic curtailed some live performances, independent schools are back on stage.

Ask Jason Patera why an arts education is important, and his voice gets stronger and more passionate. “The arts teach two things that are absolutely essential for modern life: imagination and empathy,” stresses Patera, head of school at The Chicago Academy for the Arts, a high school in Chicago.

The arts also teach empathy. Actors, for example, are trained to imagine what it actually feels like to be someone else. “Look around in our world today,” Patera says. “Is there anything we need more than imagination and empathy? The world is desperate for them.”

He explains that the arts teach students how to use their imagination to conceive of something that does not exist yet and make it happen. That’s not only important for the arts but for all aspects of life. “They learn how to execute on their vision,” Patera says.

Independent schools excel at arts education. The schools offer fine arts, music, media arts, dance and performance theater. The Chicago Academy for the Arts offers a unique program that combines rigorous academic classes and professional-level arts training. Students can specialize in dance, media arts, music, musical theater and visual arts.

“Visit the school,” says Anique Seldon, director of admissions at the British International School of Chicago, South Loop. “Ask about the curriculum. Understand the trajectory of the student experience.” For example, the curriculum at the school takes a holistic approach, preparing students for the next step in their educational journey. Serving children age 3-grade 12, the school combines several internationally recognized approaches. The lower grades have a British curriculum, complimented with an international curriculum. Students in grades 9 and 10 follow another highly regarded international curriculum. Students in grades 11 and 12 take the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme—the gold standard in education respected by colleges and universities around the world.

While there was a time when parents didn’t ask much about school safety because they assumed the environment was secure, the dual issues of the pandemic and school shootings have brought the topic of safety to the forefront. How secure is the campus? How are medical issues Francishandled?W.

Like other schools, Catherine Cook has a parent association. Parents are automatically part of the parent association upon the enrollment of their student. What is the sign-in system? “Ask about safety drills,” says Fisher. Medical protocols are important too. Nobody knows a child better than the parent.

What’s the school community like? Administrators often talk about the importance of their school community, but it’s essential to find out what that actually means. Try to get beyond the website’s marketing language, administrators advise. This usually involves visiting the school and seeing for yourself how the school operates. Let your kids visit the school too and talk to potential peers. Talk to other parents. “Find out what the school feels like,” advises Wells at Catherine Cook. Look for clues about the school’s culture. How are teachers interacting with their students? Are teachers engaged? Something as simple as whether the student’s artwork is displayed

in the hallways can be an indication of a welcoming culture. Ask how the school promotes its values.

Regina is currently undergoing a renovation to create a more modern and functional campus. The first phase of the project features a new entrance, open locker area with stadium seating and redesigned cafeteria. This phase will be complete in January. Other parts of the building will be renovated in subsequent phases. How can parents get involved? Schools want your input. Parent groups and committees are a big part of the overall school community. Parents help get things done too, whether it’s fund raising or sponsoring an event. Involvement is typically voluntary. Parents have limited time.

Marist High School, located in Chicago’s Mount Greenwood neighborhood, is a Catholic coed institution. The college-prep school celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. The campus ministry program includes traditions such as community service projects, mission trips and retreats.
