Jay Apple knows what he’s going to do should Shaker Heights City Council finalize a plan to put the Shaker LaunchHouse building under new management. Apple says he’s going to go wherever LaunchHouse CEO Todd Goldstein goes. Several other entrepreneurs told Crain’s or publicly announced that they plan to leave as well. Some told Crain’s they’ll leave even if Goldstein doesn’t open another space for startup companies by the time the lease ends on June 30. Granted, there are more than 60 companies and individuals who rent space at the building. City officials expect some of them to stay. And Jay Apple — cofounder of TenantMagic, which makes software used to process rental applications and screen tenants — says a few tenants have told him they aren’t yet sure

Details include the extensive changes ahead for The Q BY JAY MILLER jmiller@crain.com @millerjh

An army of reporters, television anchors and commentators will descend on Cleveland — Quicken Loans Arena and the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland, in particular — this summer, all battling for the best coverage of the Republican goings-on during the July 18-21 Republican National Convention. And like any army, the road to success begins with logistics, effectively moving the army into battle stations. More than 500 media technicians, producers and reporters came to town earlier this month to start mapping their logistics plans. In between lunch at The Q and dinner at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, they got their first look at the two buildings that will be at the center of their lives for several weeks in July — where they can place their cameras, photographers and reporters, and where they can build their anchor desks and work stations. One of the first things they saw were diagrams of the planned layout of The Q, including the planned locations for television cameras and anchor booths. The plan is to remove 3,500 seats on the east side of the arena and reconfigure 30 luxury suites, build five camera platforms for the major networks, 30 other broadcast centers, build platforms for still photographers and set aside seating for print media, bloggers and others. It also identifies locations where TV reporters can do stand-up reports on the floor. The stage, where the presidential candidate will accept the nomination, will be set up on the east side of the arena, 55 feet above the basketball floor, taking out sections 125 and 126 — center-court seats for Cavaliers games. what they’re going to do. After all, there’s still a lot of uncertainty in the air. Last week, the Shaker Heights Development Corp. issued a news release saying that it “is finalizing a master lease agreement” that would put it in charge of managing the old Zalud Oldsmobile dealership on Lee Road — which five years ago was turned into a colorful assortment of desks, offices and workshop space for startups. Today, the lease is held by Goldstein, Caldwell and Associates, which does business as LaunchHouse and owns the name. A day after the release came out, however, Shaker economic development director Tania Menesse said it shouldn’t have been put out so soon, given that the city council hasn’t voted to finalize the plan. There are other uncertainties, too. For instance, Goldstein is trying to recruit the building’s tenants to join him at a new location, but he hasn’t determined where that might be. He also has a noncompete agreement
